Sydney Port Facilities & Location

Ships typically dock at the Overseas Passenger Terminal, which is a five-minute walk from the city center. You’ll find ATMs, currency exchange offices, cafes, and restaurants right by the terminal.

Top Sights & Attractions To See Before Cruises From Sydney

Sydney opera house.

The Sydney Opera House is the city’s defining landmark and a fabulous display of modern architecture. The exterior was designed in the shape of the sails of a sailboat, and its unique structure often gleams in the sunlight. The Opera House’s sail shape also provides excellent acoustics for the many performances that occur inside the venue each year, which include opera, ballet, music, comedy, kid shows, inspirational speakers, and more.

Taronga Zoo

Sydney’s Taronga Zoo is a popular attraction for animal lovers embarking on one of our cruises from Sydney. This award-winning zoo features over 4,000 animals, which includes species that are native to Australia as well as rare and endangered animals. Head up on the Sky Safari, the only cable car in Sydney, for spectacular views.

Bondi Beach

Australia’s most famous beach is also one of its most beautiful. Bondi Beach is only about 15 minutes southeast of Sydney’s city center and provides a quintessential Australian beach-going experience. You’ll find soft golden sand, beachfront restaurants and bars, and lots of surfing and other water sports.

Manly Beach

Another popular beach to visit in Australia is Manly Beach, especially if you love surfing. Manly Beach was the site of the world’s first surfing contest back in 1964. While its legendary waves along the northern end of the beach at Queenscliff Bommie are only recommended for advanced surfers, the area on the southern end of Manly Beach has great waves for beginner surfers, too.

Learn More About Sydney Shore Excursions

Top things to do in sydney, climb the sydney harbour bridge.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a heritage-listed bridge made of steel and features a defining arch, and one of the top things to do in Sydney is climb it. You’ll suit up in specially-designed outdoor gear and climb over 400 feet above Sydney Harbour. The bridge is open to vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians to cross or climb.

Enjoy the View from Sydney Tower Eye

Another way to get high above the city is during a ride on the Sydney Tower Eye, which takes you to the highest point in Sydney. You’ll have a bird’s-eye view of the harbor, city skyline, and distant Blue Mountains off the coastline. After you take a ride on the Sydney Tower Eye, you can also visit the observation deck, 4-D cinema, and other exhibits that come included with admission.

Play at Luna Park Sydney

If you’re looking for some family fun before embarking on a cruise from Sydney, head to  Luna Park, a restored amusement park that dates back to the 1930s. Both kids and adults will love going on exhilarating rides, taking a leisurely spin on the Ferris wheel, and gliding down giant slides. During your visit, you’ll also find carnival-style foods and games.

Where c an I eat in Sydney?

Foodies will love Sydney’s international food scene. From ritzy waterfront restaurants to laid-back eateries along one of Sydney’s “eat streets,” the city has it all. For an after-dinner drink, it’s hard to beat a cocktail in one of the sky bars located atop its many skyscrapers. If you’re looking for a gourmet meal in a setting like nowhere else, head to Sixpenny or Bennelong, an elegant restaurant located inside the Sydney Opera House.

What’s the culture and history of Sydney?

Sydney Harbour was originally the home of the aboriginal tribes of Australia. With the arrival of Britain’s First Fleet in 1788, the city of Sydney (named after Lord Sydney, the British Home Secretary at the time) was established as a penal colony of Great Britain. By 1840, the transportation of convicts to the city had ceased. A decade later, the population of the city grew exponentially after a local gold rush.

Up until 1900, Sydney was the capital of New South Wales, a British colony. But after the Commonwealth of Australia was established in 1901, Sydney became the capital of the state of New South Wales, which joined the Australian Federation. The wild and harsh start of colonial Sydney is now long in the past. Today, you’ll find a vibrant and cosmopolitan city with one of the most diverse populations in the world.

Where can I go shopping near the Sydney cruise port?

You will find an assortment of shopping malls near the Sydney cruise port. Some of the largest are Westfield Sydney, The Galeries, and World Square. For local boutiques, head to the intersection of Oxford Street and Glenmore Road. In the neighborhood of Paddington, you’ll find shops with cutting-edge fashion from new designers. For souvenirs and art, head to The Rocks near the Sydney Opera House, or the Strand for Australian hats and boots.

How can I get around Sydney?

Sydney has a variety of public transportation options. Its extensive bus route system goes to many of the most popular tourist sites, plus there are a light rail and ferry service. In addition, the Sydney Metro provides fast, frequent service around the city. As for taxis, you’ll find them waiting right outside the Sydney cruise terminal, as well as in taxi ranks all around the city.

What are the local currency and tipping customs?

Australia’s official currency is the Australian dollar. The paper bills come in increments of $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. Credit cards are widely accepted, but traveler’s checks are not. Tipping isn’t expected in Australia, but is appreciated. If you do tip, a smaller amount around 10% is usually acceptable.

celebrity tours sydney

Celebrity Cruises celebrates its highly anticipated return to Australian and New Zealand waters, marking a new beginning for the cruise line.

On Saturday, Celebrity Eclipse set sail from Sydney on a 12-night itinerary exploring the wilderness of New Zealand. This voyage is the first of 17 sailings departing from Sydney and Auckland through April 2023, and the first for Celebrity Eclipse in Australian, New Zealand and South Pacific waters.

“The return Down Under has been long-awaited but someday has finally arrived! Celebrity Eclipse is the first Celebrity ship to sail this region for 930 days – a momentous occasion for the brand and our team members who have worked so hard to get to this point; and the first of many WonderFULL sailings ahead,” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, president and CEO of Celebrity Cruises.

“Returning to this region is another significant milestone in the industry’s global recovery, as we sail forward into a bright future.”

Celebrity Cruises vice president and managing director of Australia and APAC, Tim Jones, added: “We’ve been patiently waiting for this moment for so long, and to finally see the freshly painted blue hull of Celebrity Eclipse slice through the waters of Sydney Harbour didn’t disappoint.

“We were one of the remaining major cruise markets to return to service, and we are really proud to be contributing to the tourism industries of Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific once more, alongside rebuilding the economy of key coastal communities.

“Continuing our momentum in the region, next year we’ll be taking the guest experience to the ‘Edge’ with the debut season of Celebrity Edge Down Under!

“It’s the great outdoors that makes this region truly exceptional and we can’t wait to welcome an equally exceptional ship that’s been uniquely designed to connect guests with their surroundings. Whether you’re flying Down Under to join us, or stepping aboard from your front door, Celebrity Edge is a chance to explore our exotic landscapes like never before, all while sailing in complete luxury. ”

Highlights of Celebrity’s 2022-23 season Down Under include:

  • The Great Barrier Reef from above and below with a choice of multiple experiences from privately chartered yachts to helicopter rides;
  • Savour some incredible local wines and culinary in the first-ever Australian food and wine itinerary to Melbourne, Adelaide and Hobart;
  • A new overnight opportunity in Hobart, Cairns and Adelaide to experience the nightlife in each of these cities;
  • Stay longer in port with 8pm departures from popular destinations such as Melbourne, Brisbane and Christchurch;
  • The Auckland to Fiji voyage makes a comeback, departing for the first time in January;
  • Three South Pacific Island itineraries;
  • And, a new transpacific sailing at the end of the season, seamlessly transporting guests between Sydney and Honolulu and crossing the international date line.

Billie Eilish is going "hard" with touring.

On Monday, April 29, the pop star, 22, revealed that she'll be hitting the road in support of her forthcoming album Hit Me Hard and Soft .

The arena dates, produced by Live Nation, will kick off in North America in September 2024, before continuing in Australia in February 2025. Then, she'll travel to Europe, the U.K., and Ireland starting in April until late July 2025, per a press release.

Eilish will kick off her North American leg in Québec, Canada at Centre Videotron on Sunday, Sept. 29, making stops in Philadelphia at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday, Oct. 5 and in New York City at Madison Square Garden from Wednesday Oct. 16 to Friday Oct. 18, before wrapping a three-date stint in Inglewood, Calif. at the Kia Forum on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

The "Ocean Eyes" artist will then launch her Australian dates with four dates in Brisbane at Brisbane Entertainment Centre from Tuesday, Feb. 18 to Saturday, Feb.22, which she'll close out with a four-day stint in Melbourne at Rod Laver Arena from Tuesday, March 4 to Saturday, March 8.

Eilish's European dates will kick off in Stockholm with a two-date performance at Avicii Arena on Wednesday, April 23 and Thursday, April 24, before wrapping in Barcelona after a two-date stint at Palau Sant Jordi on Sunday, June 15.

On Monday, July 7, the nine-time Grammy winner will kick off her U.K. leg in Glasgow, Scotland at OVO Hydro, where she will play two dates. She'll conclude that part of the tour with two dates in Dublin at 3Arena on Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27. King Charles’ major health announcement

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to embark on a surprise new tour, just days after the Duke of Sussex makes a brief return to the UK.

It’s been confirmed the couple will head to Nigeria next month after accepting an invitation from the country’s highest-ranking military official.

According to People magazine , Harry and Meghan will “meet with service members and take part in a variety of cultural activities”, mirroring the itineries during their foreign tours as working royals.

The visit comes will also highlight the duke’s Invictus Games, which saw Nigerian athletes take part for the first time last year.

At the 2023 event, Harry joked about a rivalry with his wife, who he claimed was backing Nigeria after discovering her heritage.

“Now, I’m not saying we play favourites in our home, but since my wife discovered she’s of Nigerian descent, it’s likely to get a little bit more competitive this year,” he joked during his opening speech in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The Duchess of Sussex revealed on her podcast in 2022 that she had taken a genealogy test and discovered that she was 43 per cent Nigerian.

The royal couple will arrive in Nigeria just days after Harry returns to the UK to attend a special service at St. Paul’s Cathedral in honour of the Invictus Games’ 10th anniversary.

It’s understood Meghan will not be accompanying him to London for the May 8 event.

While next month’s visit is Harry’s second this year, Meghan has not been back to Britain since 2022.

The King is returning to work but the spin from Buckingham Palace can’t hide that one major detail has been left out.

Prince Harry is set to return to the UK within days, though his wife, Meghan Markle, is not expected to join him.

Nearly three months after revealing his cancer diagnosis and retreating from the spotlight, the monarch has shared a huge update.

Sydney Children’s Hospital and cancer centre reaches major milestone

A new children’s cancer centre has reached a major milestone as it moves towards completion in 2025.

Australia ‘paying the price’ for Labor government’s budgetary inaction

Don't miss out on the headlines from Illness. Followed categories will be added to My News.

The Sydney Children’s Hospital and Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre has reached a major milestone, with construction of the new 12-storey building reaching its highest point.

Honouring a long-held construction tradition a native water gum tree, which is native to the area, was lifted onto the roof of the new building.

Federal health minister Mark Butler joined his NSW counterpart Ryan Park, Federal Member for Kingsford Smith Matt Thistlethwaite and Member for Coogee Marjorie O’Neill for the ‘topping out’ ceremony.

Stage one of the Sydney Children’s Hospital and Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre is on track for completion in late 2025.

It will include a new children’s intensive care unit and emergency department, as well as a new Neuroscience Comprehensive Care and Research Centre.

The news has been welcomed by one Sydney family whose son Austin Alexander had a condition that could be treated by the neuroscience facility when it opens.

Austin Alexander needed specialist help from the Sydney Children’s Hospital. Picture: Supplied

Austin was a former patient at the children’s hospital. He was diagnosed with a spinal cord stroke and underwent lengthy rehab to return to walking again.

His dad Craig Alexander said the three months Austin was in hospital was a rollercoaster.

“What was completely shocking in the beginning and hard to believe, I think, is every parent’s nightmare getting news like that,” he said.

“It felt like a lot of bad luck to be honest, but since then I feel that we have been very lucky and I feel very grateful.

“I feel grateful to the nurses and the doctors that we had. We always had amazing medical experts.”

Austin’s mum Nerida Alexander said they were able to access some of the most senior doctors in NSW through Sydney Kids.

“We were really lucky the children’s hospital was attached to the Prince of Wales so we were able to access therapies that weren’t used for that injury before,” she said.

“We are super grateful the right people came along at the right time,” she said.

The $658m project is part of a $1.5bn investment in health as part of the Randwick Health and Innovation Precinct.

The Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre will include advanced laboratory spaces and deliver integrated, specialist cancer treatment, education and research, aiming to transform childhood cancer treatment and become one of the world’s leading paediatric cancer centres.

The state and federal governments have partnered with Children’s Cancer Institute, Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network including the Kids Cancer Centre, and UNSW Sydney to plan and deliver Australia’s first Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre within the new children’s hospital and university buildings on site.

Philanthropic contributions have also been provided from Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation, Minderoo Foundation and Children’s Cancer Institute.

Mr Butler said the exciting milestone was another step towards delivering a state-of-the-art health facility that will transform paediatric care for generations to come.

“Once complete, the new health facility will be world-class, bringing together leading clinicians, researchers and educators under the one roof,” he said.

Mr Park said the project was about significantly improving health outcomes for kids and their families, by offering them the highest level of care.

 “This project will deliver a new children’s emergency department, emergency short-stay unit, and ICU and a new paediatric virtual care centre which will provide care to patients across the state,” he said.

New renders of Sydney Children’s Hospital stage one and Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

“There has been extensive consultation to develop this new building with over 1000 people involved, to ensure we deliver a space which feels like home to families facing their toughest times.”

Mr Thistlethwaite said with the project reaching its highest point now, our community has a better idea of just what will be on offer when the new hospital is completed.

 “This redevelopment of Sydney Children’s Hospital has created more than a thousand jobs, which is a really welcome boost to our local economy,” he said.

Ms O’Neill said she was very proud of this major investment in paediatric healthcare for our community here in Randwick and in surrounding areas, which is now coming to fruition.

“There are extraordinarily talented and committed healthcare staff who work here, so it’s terrific that they will have these state of the art facilities to provide great care to our community,” she said.

It’s about to get easier for frequent travelers to ball out on a cruise or a high-end casino vacation thanks to a new partnership between Hard Rock International and both Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises.

Members of each company’s loyalty program will now receive reciprocal benefits on a hotel stay or cruise, according to the hotel group . Benefits include discounts on sailings, perks during a hotel stay, and more.

“This partnership expands the ways our guests can enjoy their vacations and experience entertainment, dining and gaming from ship to shore,” Jesse Hopfinger, the senior vice president, onboard revenue for Royal Caribbean International, said in a statement.

Through the agreement, travelers who are members of Hard Rock’s Unity by Hard Rock loyalty program will receive discounts on Royal Caribbean and Celebrity sailings and can qualify for invite-only cruise giveaways . The company said top-tier loyalty members also receive an annual complimentary cruise.

Members of Royal Caribbean’s Club Royale program and Celebrity’s Blue Chip Club program will similarly receive discounts on hotel stays. Premium tier members will also receive an annual complimentary trip at select Hard Rock hotels and casinos.

"Whether extending their cruise vacation at one of our port-adjacent properties, visiting one of the participating Hard Rock Hotel and Cafe locations worldwide or enjoying the cruise lines' ships sailing around the world, travelers will have new ways to enjoy the best of what Hard Rock, Seminole Casinos and Royal Caribbean and Celebrity have to offer,” Jeff Hook, the executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Seminole Hard Rock Support Services, said in the statement.

Overall, travel rewards programs offer a great opportunity for frequent travelers to save on a trip and access exclusive perks along the way from upgrades on airlines to late check-out at hotels, and more.

The decision to partner with Hard Rock comes as Royal Caribbean continues to upgrade its private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , with overwater cabanas and a new adults-only beach club . Last week, the private island welcomed guests from Celebrity Cruises for the first time.

Glen Powell Admits He and Sydney Sweeney Purposely Fueled Romance Rumors for Anyone but You

“Sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit—and it worked wonderfully. Sydney is very smart.”

They got us!

But in an interview published Tuesday, Powell admits it was all an act, entirely calculated by Sweeney herself.

“The two things that you have to sell a rom-com are fun and chemistry,” Powell told The New York Times . “Sydney and I have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry. That’s people wanting what’s on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit—and it worked wonderfully. Sydney is very smart.”

Sweeney and her husband-to-be worked as executive producers on the film through her production company, Fifty-Fifty Films. In the movie, Sweeney (who plays Bea) and Powell (who plays Ben), star as two people who have been avoiding each other since going on a date that ended badly—but who find themselves stuck at the same wedding in Australia. Spoiler: They eventually fall in love.

las vegas, nevada april 24 glen powell l and sydney sweeney promote the upcoming film anyone but you at the sony pictures entertainment presentation during cinemacon, the official convention of the national association of theatre owners, at the colosseum at caesars palace on april 24, 2023 in las vegas, nevada photo by ethan millergetty images

Sweeney told the Times that she “was on every call” regarding marketing for the film ahead of its December 2023 release. “I was in text group chats. I was probably keeping everybody over at Sony marketing and distribution awake at night because I couldn’t stop with ideas,” she said. “I wanted to make sure that we were actively having a conversation with the audience as we were promoting this film, because at the end of the day, they’re the ones who created the entire narrative.”

And, while Sweeney and Powell have clarified many times that they are, in fact, just good friends, their romantic ploy paid off, as the movie remains the 10th-highest-grossing film in 2024 at the domestic box office.
