  • Crazy credits On some episodes, the closing credits show a still that is actually from the Star Trek blooper reel. It is a close-up of stunt man Bill Blackburn who played an android in Return to Tomorrow (1968) , removing his latex make up. In the reel, He is shown taking it off, while an off-screen voice says "You wanted show business, you got it!"
  • Alternate versions In 2006, CBS went back to the archives and created HD prints of every episode of the show. In addition to the new video transfer, they re-did all of the model shots and some matte paintings using CGI effects, and re-recorded the original theme song to clean it up. These "Enhanced" versions of the episodes aired on syndication and have been released on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Galaxy class

The culmination of an ambitious, 14-year design process, the Galaxy class represented Starfleet 's most sophisticated achievement in multimission ship systems design at the time of the commissioning of the lead vessel, the U.S.S. Galaxy NCC-70637 in 2357. When the Galaxy Class Starship Development Project was announced in July 2343, much of the original theoretical work had been accomplished, particularly in the propulsion field. While the attempt to surpass the primary warp field efficiency barrier with the Transwarp Development Project in the 2280s proved unsuccessful, the pioneering achievements in warp power generation and field coil design eventually led to the uprated Excelsior and Ambassador class starships. [2] Many of the new developments created for the Galaxy Class Development Project found their way into other ship classes that entered service before the Galaxy class itself joined the active ranks, such as the Nebula class . [9]

Some in Starfleet Command wanted the Galaxy class to serve first and foremost as a warship. A vocal member of that group was Admiral Carstairs , of the Starfleet Operations Planning Board, said that "what we need is something that will frighten our enemies away from [our] territory once and for all. The new Galaxy class is just such an instrument of deterrence." This view, however, was ably countered by the board's Commodore Santin , who responded to Carstairs that "converting this class into the ultimate battlewagon—as you have described it on more than one occasion—may well have an effect opposite the one you desire." [3]

Due in part to their size, Starfleet Command never intended to order a large number of Galaxy class vessels. [9] Starfleet Command initially ordered six Galaxy class ships. A projected total of twelve vessels were held as an option to be activated, should conditions warrant. Once the initial spaceframe design was finalized, it was decided to proceed with the completion of six vessels and to take the other six to the end of the framework stage only. These six spaceframes were broken down into manageable segments and dispersed by cargo carriers to remote sites within the Federation as a security measure. [2] Those projected emergency conditions came in the aftermath of the Battle of Wolf 359 , those six spaceframes were completed, and additional Galaxy class vessels were ordered. [9]

Pursuant to Starfleet Exploration Directive 902.3, the following objectives were established for the Galaxy Class Starship Development Project:

  • Provide a mobile platform for a wide range of ongoing scientific and cultural research projects;
  • Replace aging Ambassador and Oberth class starships as primary instruments of Starfleet's exploration programs;
  • Provide autonomous capability for full execution of Federation policy options in outlying areas;
  • Incorporate recent advancements in warp power-plant technology and improved science instrumentation. [2]

In 2369, the Galaxy class saw an Uprated refit, which added a third torpedo tube; this tube, located within the aft-facing cavity on the separated Saucer Module, gave additional firepower to the saucer during separated flight modes. Additionally, newer, more powerful deflector arrays were installed, further enhancing the defensive capabilities of the Galaxy class. [9] Resulting from the loss of several vessels, including the U.S.S. Yamato NCC-71807 , [10] this refit was meant to counter new, unforeseen threats, and to safeguard the crew. [9]

Galaxy class starships took part in a number of large-scale fleet actions during the Dominion War , and entire wings of these mammoth vessels engaged Dominion forces in battle at Vulcan , the Chin'toka system , and Earth . [9] During the war, a number of Galaxy class hulls were pulled from the internal structures work path, equipped with additional weapons, and launched with 65% of their spaceframe volumes empty. [1] Following the war's end, Starfleet Command halted production on the Galaxy class in favor of a return to more mission-specific designs like the Nebula, Nova , and Akira classes. [9]

Saucer Module Separation

Galaxy class saucer separation ( ST07 )

The Galaxy class consists of two spacecraft systems integrated to form a single, functional vessel. Under specific emergency conditions, the two vehicle elements may perform a separation maneuver and continue independent operation. The two elements, the Saucer Module and the Stardrive—or Battle—Section, were normally joined together by a series of eighteen structural docking latches, numerous umbilicals, and turbolift pass-throughs. Risks and vehicle stress associated with repeated undockings and redockings, however, prevented frequent use of the separation maneuver. In the event the Saucer Module was disabled near a planetary body and could not maintain a stable orbit, landing the saucer was the final option. [2]

Main Engineering

Galaxy class Main Engineering ( TNG   107 )

Galaxy class warp core ( TNG   106 )

The Main Engineering control center on Deck 36 served as a master control for the ship's warp propulsion system, as well as the impulse propulsion system and other engineering systems. Main Engineering also served as a backup control center in the event of failure of the Main Bridge and the Battle Bridge. Workstations at this location could be reconfigured to emulate Conn, Ops, Tactical, and other command operations. [2]

8 Ways the Original ‘Star Trek’ Made History

By: Sarah Pruitt

Updated: November 2, 2021 | Original: September 8, 2016

Star Trek

When "Star Trek" premiered on NBC in the fall of 1966, it promised "To boldly go where no man has gone before." More than half a century later, it has done just that. The original "Star Trek"—which lasted for only three seasons—birthed some 20 spinoff series and films; a universe of games, toys, comics and conventions; and influenced decades of science-fiction. Here are eight ways the show broke new ground.

The Center Seat: 55 Years of Star Trek premieres Friday, November 5 at 10/9c on The HISTORY ®  Channel

1. A veteran of World War II, Gene Roddenberry created a show about fighting another world war—this time in space.

Gene Roddenberry circa 1947.

After piloting a B-17 bomber in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II , Roddenberry served in the Los Angeles Police Department before he began writing for TV. He created the short-lived series “The Lieutenant” before Desilu Studios (founded by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz) picked up “Star Trek” in 1966. In an era before man set foot on the moon, the show introduced us to a 23rd-century world where interplanetary travel was an established fact: Captain Kirk and the crew of the starship Enterprise (named for the real-life ship that turned the tide toward the Allies in the Battle of Midway) roamed the galaxy, clashing with alien enemies like the Klingons, Excalbians and Romulans.

2. The show’s multicultural, multiracial cast put it well ahead of its time.

The cast of "Star Trek" during season 3.

In addition to the half-Vulcan Spock, the crew of the Enterprise in “Star Trek”’s debut season included Lt. Nyota Uhura (played by the African American actress Nichelle Nichols) and Lt. Hikaru Sulu (played by the Japanese American actor George Takei). In an era of mounting racial tensions, “Star Trek” presented a positive image of people of different races, genders and cultures (not to mention aliens and humans!) working together cooperatively—a somewhat utopian vision, perhaps, but a heartening one. Nichols later said that she was reportedly thinking of leaving the show after the first season, but was convinced to stay on by none other than Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. , whom she met at a NAACP fundraiser. The civil rights leader, who admitted to being a devoted fan of the show, told Nichols that she was breaking new ground in the role of Uhura, and showing African Americans what was possible for them.

3. The original 'Star Trek' referred repeatedly to the ongoing, escalating conflict in Vietnam.

Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner and DeForest Kelley in the episode "Plato's Stepchildren."

Though marketed as a classic adventure drama (Roddenberry based the character of Captain Kirk on Horatio Hornblower from C.S. Forester’s classic naval adventure series), “Star Trek” didn’t shy away from tackling moral and social issues such as war, racism and discrimination. The first season episode “Taste for Armageddon” was one of TV’s first allegories for the Vietnam War , an issue the show would return to most famously in the second season’s “A Private Little War.” In that episode, the Klingons are providing weapons to a primitive planet, and Capt. Kirk decides to do the same in order to preserve the “balance of power” on both sides. One of the most controversial plot lines of that season, the story was clearly analogous to the escalating nature of American involvement in Vietnam.

4. But it offered a positive vision for the future in the midst of Cold War tensions.

Walter Koenig as Pavel Chekov.

In the show’s second season, a new navigator named Pavel Andreievich Chekov showed up on the bridge of the starship Enterprise. As Roddenberry recounted in The Fifty-Year Mission , a two-volume oral history of “Star Trek” published in 2016, the character was added after the Russian newspaper Pravda pointed out that the show ignored the Soviet Union ’s pioneering contributions to space travel. But Walter Koenig, the actor who played Chekov, said the Pravda explanation was made up for publicity: The show’s producers wanted a character to appeal to a younger demographic, and just decided to make him Russian. Though a long-running theory held that the Klingons and the Federation represented the Soviet Union and the United States, two ideologically opposed superpowers, another interpretation argues that “Star Trek” functions as a critique of Cold War -era politics, by offering an optimistic vision of the future at a very uncertain moment in history.

5. It was the beneficiary of one of the most successful fan-organized letter-writing campaigns in TV history.

The U.S.S. Enterprise seen in a season 3 episode.

By late 1967, the original “Star Trek” series was struggling, and rumors flew that NBC was planning to cancel the series after only two seasons. Spurred into action, more than 100,000 fans—known as “Trekkers” or “Trekkies”—wrote letters in support of the show. In the largest of numerous protests on college campuses, 200 Caltech students marched to NBC’s Burbank, California studio wielding signs with slogans like “Draft Spock” and “Vulcan Power.” NBC eventually acknowledged the success of the fans’ campaign, announcing that the show would return for another season.

6. The show featured one of the first interracial kisses on TV.

Nichelle Nichols as Uhura and William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk in the episode "Plato's Stepchildren.

After being “saved” by the fans, the third season of the original “Star Trek” largely bombed, but one particular moment stands out: In the episode “Plato’s Stepchildren,” Capt. Kirk kisses his communications officer, Lt. Uhura, in what is thought to be the first scripted interracial kiss on American television. Though NBC executives worried how the kiss would play on television in 1968 (especially in the South), they eventually decided to leave it in the episode, earning the show enduring fame for the barrier-breaking moment. (Though Kirk and Uhura’s liplock is often cited as the first interracial kiss on TV, a kiss between actors on the British soap opera “Emergency Ward 10” predated “Plato’s Stepchildren” by several years.)

7. It enjoyed record-breaking success in syndication post-cancellation.

Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock and William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk.

Despite its cancellation after only three seasons (and 79 episodes), “Star Trek” gained new life through syndication, as the devotion of its growing fan base increased from the late 1960s and throughout the ‘70s. By 1986, nearly two decades after it entered syndication, A.C. Nielsen Co. listed “Star Trek: The Original Series” as the No. 1 syndicated show. That same year, Roddenberry launched a second TV series, “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” which was immediately syndicated and became a ratings hit. Meanwhile, “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” had grossed more than $80 million in 1979, leading to several more movies in the ‘80s and ‘90s, followed by a 21st-century “reboot” of the series starting in 2009. Trekkie enthusiasm fueled the success of comic books, cartoons, novels, action figures and other merchandise based on the series, as well as Star Trek-themed conventions attended by thousands at hotels and other venues around the world.

8. Thanks to 'Star Trek' fans, America’s first space shuttle orbiter was christened Enterprise.

The cast of the original "Star Trek" attend the rollout of the space shuttle Enterprise in 1976.

In 1976, hundreds of thousands of Trekkies wrote impassioned letters to NASA arguing that the first space shuttle orbiter should be named after the starship Enterprise. Though he never mentioned the letter campaign, President Gerald R. Ford expressed his preference for the name “Enterprise,” with its hallowed Navy history, and the space administration’s officials ended up dropping their original choice, Constitution. Roddenberry and many original “Star Trek” cast members were on hand to greet the shuttle when it rolled out of the manufacturing facilities in Palmdale, California for its dedication ceremony in September 1976. Though Enterprise was used in a number of flight tests, it was never launched into space, and spent much of its life in storage.

The Golden Age of Star Trek (from Wallpaper Cave)

  • The Different Eras of Star Trek

Just as comic books used the ages of humanity as a metaphor to describe publishing eras which differed in content and tone, so too I think it is time to describe Star Trek as a series of ages.

Golden Age (1966-1986)

The Golden Age of Star Trek is a 20 year era that began with the premier of TOS on September 8, 1966 and ended with the debut of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home on November 26, 1986.

This era closely followed franchise creator Gene Roddenberry’s vision for the future. As described by The Take:

“Every episode is both a suspenseful action story and a morality tale, set out to simultaneously entertain and provide enriching thought material for the viewer via classical mythological style. Protagonism is centered around altruism, and the characters must make decisions based on those ideals. They exist in a universe free from internal conflict, disease, poverty, or hunger, set out on a galactic mission to discover and communicate with other life forms.” Source: https://the-take.com/watch/what-was-star-trek-creator-gene-roddenberrys-vision-for-the-series

The franchise made use of allegory to enable the morality tales resonate with audiences:

“The series would feature allegories of contemporary cultural and social issues, making its morality tales that much more cohesive and tangible for audiences.” Source: https://the-take.com/watch/what-was-star-trek-creator-gene-roddenberrys-vision-for-the-series

This bright and hopeful future was for a specific purpose:

“…he was hoping to somewhat lead by example: Depict the world operating harmoniously, and perhaps people will believe it is possible.” Source: https://the-take.com/watch/what-was-star-trek-creator-gene-roddenberrys-vision-for-the-series

TV series and movies in this era:

  • TOS: The Original Series (1966–1969)
  • TOS: The Animated Series (1973–1974)
  • TOS: Star Trek: The Motion Picture (December 7, 1979)
  • TOS: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (June 4, 1982)
  • TOS: Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (June 1, 1984)
  • TOS: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (November 26, 1986)

Silver Age (1987-2005)

The Silver Age of Star Trek is an 18 year era that began with the premier of TNG on September 28, 1987 and ended with the conclusion of Enterprise on May 13, 2005.

This era continues with episodic, planet-of-the-week format, featuring a bright and hopeful future, and a timeline that builds on the past continuity rather than reinventing it.

  • TNG: The Next Generation (1987–1994)
  • TOS: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (June 9, 1989)
  • TOS: Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (December 6, 1991)
  • DS9: Deep Space Nine (1993–1999)
  • TNG Films: Star Trek Generations (November 18, 1994)
  • VOY: Voyager (1995–2001)
  • TNG Films: Star Trek: First Contact (November 22, 1996)
  • TNG Films: Star Trek: Insurrection (December 11, 1998)
  • ENT: Enterprise (2001–2005)
  • TNG Films: Star Trek: Nemesis (December 13, 2002)

Bronze Age (2009-present)

The Bronze Age of Star Trek began with the Star Trek film on May 8, 2009 and continues to the present day. In general, this era features new directions with different tones than what came before.

The Kelvin movies featured a departure from past continuities and a move to more action-oriented, less cerebral scripts.

The new TV series include the Lower Decks TV-MA cartoon with adult humor, Star Trek: Discovery which includes the F-word, and Star Trek: Picard whose storyline has darker and more cynical tones. The sets tend to feature dark rooms with shadows and less of the bright, fluorescent atmosphere of the series in the Silver Age.

Both movies and TV series have cases of recasting TOS characters with new actors.

  • Kelvin Film: Star Trek (May 8, 2009)
  • Kelvin Film: Star Trek Into Darkness (May 16, 2013)
  • Kelvin Film: Star Trek Beyond (July 22, 2016)
  • DIS: Discovery (2017–present)
  • ST: Short Treks (2018–present)
  • PIC: Picard (2020–present)
  • LOW: Lower Decks (2020–present)

Rosemary's Baby Prequel With Julia Garner Gets Premiere Window

Rosemary's Baby is getting a prequel on Paramount+ . Titled Apartment 7A , the upcoming movie is set to premiere on the streaming platform ahead of this coming Halloween season.

" Apartment 7A is the perfect way to kick off the Halloween season," said Jeff Grossman, executive vice president of programming at Paramount+ , in a statement to Variety . "Director Natalie Erika James and the prodigious creative team have crafted a chilling and clever new entry into the genre." Apartment 7A was first announced in March 2021. However, it wasn't until filming wrapped in June 2022 that it was revealed that the psychological thriller was secretly a prequel to Roman Polanski's acclaimed 1968 horror film, Rosemary's Baby .

Star Trek Origin Movie Confirmed by Paramount, Logline Revealed

Based on Ira Levin's 1967 novel of the same name, Rosemary's Baby stars Mia Farrow as Rosemary Woodhouse, a pregnant newlywed living in Manhattan who begins to suspect that her neighbors are members of a Satanic cult who are grooming her to use her baby for their rituals. The psychological horror movie was a huge commercial success upon its release in theaters in 1968, earning over $30 million at the box office. Rosemary's Baby also received critical acclaim and was nominated for two Academy Awards, winning Best Supporting Actress for Ruth Gordon, who portrayed Rosemary's elderly neighbor Minnie Castevet.

Apartment 7A Is Set Right Before the Events of Rosemary's Baby

"Set in 1965 New York City , and tells the story prior to the legendary horror classic Rosemary’s Baby , exploring what happened in the apartment before Rosemary moved in. When a struggling, young dancer suffers a devastating injury, she finds herself drawn in by dark forces when a peculiar, well-connected, older couple promises her a shot at fame," reads the official logline for Apartment 7A .

Ozark star Julia Garner leads the cast of Apartment 7A as the young dancer, with Dianne Wiest ( Mayor of Kingstown ) and Kevin McNally ( Pirates of the Caribbean ) playing the older couple, believed to be the Castevets from Rosemary's Baby . Marli Siu ( Everything I Know About Love ), Andrew Buchan ( All the Money in the World ), Rosy McEwen ( Blue Jean ), and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith ( Wonka ) round out the ensemble.

Julia garner joins the mcu.

Apartment 7A may mark the latest project for Garner, but it certainly won't be the actor's last. She is currently filming the upcoming Universal Monsters movie, Wolf Man , opposite Christopher Abbott. The supernatural horror movie is a reboot of 1941's The Wolf Man and director Leigh Whannell's second Universal Monsters project after 2020's The Invisible Man .

Garner has also been cast in Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four as Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer . Created by Stan Lee and John Buscema, Shalla-Bal was introduced in 1968's Silver Surfer #1 as the lover of Norrin Radd, the original Silver Surfer. So far, she is the latest cast member to join The Fantastic Four , boarding the highly-anticipated reboot roughly two months after Pedro Pascal (Mister Fantastic/Reed Richards), Vanessa Kirby (Invisible Woman/Sue Storm), Joseph Quinn (Human Torch/Johnny Storm) , and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Thing/Ben Grimm) were announced by Marvel Studios.

Apartment 7A is set to be released on Paramount+ in Fall 2024.

New star wars footage confirms a classic lucas villain is returning in the phantom menace prequel show.

A new teaser for Star Wars' upcoming Phantom Menace prequel TV show confirms the return of the Neimoidians - but what role will they play?

  • New footage from The Acolyte confirms the return of the Neimoidians, a classic Star Wars prequel villain.
  • The Neimoidians ruled the Trade Federation in the prequel trilogy, and allied with the Sith.
  • Will The Acolyte show how this alliance came to be?

A new Korean teaser for The Acolyte confirms the return of a classic prequel trilogy race of villains created by George Lucas himself. The Acolyte has been marketed as the "prequel to the prequels," set roughly a century before Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace , and showing how the Sith successfully infiltrated the galaxy. As exciting as the first trailer for The Acolyte may have been, showrunner Leslye Headland has teased that the true plot is as shrouded in mystery as the Sith themselves.

Now, a new Korean teaser for The Acolyte has confirmed a classic prequel trilogy race of villains, the Neimoidians, are returning in The Acolyte . This presumably means the return of the Trade Federation, the corrupt group who blockaded Naboo in The Phantom Menace . Neimoidians had been seen in The Acolyte footage shared at Star Wars Celebration last year, but there was always a chance they'd be cut.

Star Wars: The Acolyte - Cast, Story Details & Everything We Know

Who are the neimoidians, & what role do they play in the acolyte, is this how the sith took control of the trade federation.

Introduced in The Phantom Menace , the Neimoidians were a wealthy and influential race who had essentially taken control of the Trade Federation . The Neimoidians' original goal was to gain control of all galactic trade through ownership of hyperspace routes, but they were foiled by rivals. Still, under their control the Trade Federation became a powerful galactic force, a business that was even represented in the Republic Senate.

The Phantom Menace revealed the Trade Federation served a master; Darth Sidious, Dark Lord of the Sith. It is unclear how far back this conspiracy goes, and whether it even predates Palpatine himself; Darth Sidious benefited from a Sith plan that had been taking shape for a thousand years, so it wouldn't be a surprise if the Sith already worked with the Trade Federation at the time of The Acolyte . The first trailer for The Acolyte teased a clash between Jedi and a Sith Master, who could well already be working with the Neimoidians.

Alternatively, this could well be the story of how the Sith allied with the Neimoidians , entering into a partnership with them that ultimately became something rather more like control. It's possible the Jedi have been causing problems for the Trade Federation in this time period, and the Neimoidians have been approached by the sworn enemy of the Jedi. If that is the case, then The Acolyte is indeed the prequel to the prequels - especially to The Phantom Menace .
