All It Cost Me Was Everything

I’ve been high I’ve been low I’ve been wound up tighter than a hangman’s rope I broke hearts I’ve been burned Taught a lot of lessons but I never learned I’ve been good I’ve been bad Been the best worst friend that you’ve ever had I’ve been right I’ve been wrong I’m a walkin’ talkin’ livin’ breathin’ country song

Money can’t buy more than it can When you ain’t got nothing but something to prove The price is high for not giving a damn But when you don’t you ain’t got nothing to lose It ain’t hard to be a fool like me All it cost me was everything I get loose I get loud Give a lot of people shit to talk about I get mad I get mean I’m a fire tongued devil with a belly full of gasoline Money can’t buy more than it can When you ain’t got nothing but something to prove The price is high for not giving a damn But when you don’t you ain’t got nothing to lose It ain’t hard to be a fool like me All it cost me was everything Everything Money can’t buy more than it can When you ain’t got nothing but something to prove The price is high for not giving a damn But when you don’t you ain’t got nothing to lose It ain’t hard to be a fool like me No It ain’t hard to be a fool like me All it cost me was everything Cost me everything

I hear them talking under their breath Their lips don’t move but I know what they said I see them looking me up and down Hiding their smiles like I’m some kind of clown They don’t know what you don’t know

I’m gonna hurt you as much as I can And watch you cry and die where you stand I want to hear your tears hit the floor I’m gonna hurt you And hurt you some more I felt the air sucked out of the room What the hell did you get into They just assume that I must be blind Man I wish they could read my mind Cause they don’t know what you don’t know I’m gonna walk right up to your friends I’m gonna tell them about the mess you’re in You’re gonna watch their jaws hit the floor I’m gonna hurt you And hurt you some more I’m gonna hurt you like you’ve never hurt I’m gonna drive your name in the dirt You won the battle but I win the war I’m gonna hurt you and hurt you I’m gonna hurt you as much as I can And watch you cry and die where you stand I want to hear your tears hit the floor I’m gonna hurt you And hurt you some more I’m gonna hurt you And hurt you some more

Strong liquor and an empty glass And three weeks that kicked my ass This runnin’ ragged sure is hell on me I’m nine miles a minute and I’m head-long in it And she knows she’s in up to her knees

And she’s patient when she’s had enough That’s how she shows me love And she gives me more than she gets from me Sometimes the whole thing gets me down It takes more than love to turn around I have mercy when I need it That’s one thing I’ll always need And she knows it And lord she shows it She gives me every reason to believe I have mercy when I need it And that’s one thing I always need And she knows it And lord she shows it She gives me every reason to believe And she knows it And lord she shows it She gives me every reason to believe Strong liquor and an empty glass Three weeks that kicked my ass This runnin’ ragged sure is hell on me

Feeding The Flames

There’s a fire deep inside of my lady that burns just for me She struck a match on a heart full of gasoline Sometimes it burns like a candle Sometimes it’s out of control

Like on nights when it rains And she’s pouring champagne And she calls out my name in the dark Passionate light and with eyes full of lightening we light up the night with a spark Feeding the flames of the heart There’s been loves in the past went from embers to ashes to cold In the blaze of the dawn we stay going strong in the glow Sometimes it burns like a candle Sometimes it’s out of control Like on nights when it rains And she’s pouring champagne And she calls out my name in the dark Passionate light and with eyes full of lightening we light up the night with a spark Feeding the flames of the heart Sometimes it burns like a candle Sometimes it’s out of control I love nights when it rains And she’s pouring champagne And she calls out my name in the dark Passionate light and with eyes full of lightening we light up the night with a spark Feeding the flames Feeding the flames of the heart Feeding the flames of the heart

I Don’t Trust My Memories Anymore

I could conjure up so many times From the good old days when she was mine I could reminisce on the crazy nights When I held her close, but I always cry

No I don’t trust my memories anymore They ain’t the friends I thought they were before They used to be so fond Now my faith in them is gone No I don’t trust my memories anymore Got a thousand scars all across my back This wounded heart just can’t get past When I see you now in a perfect dream I wake myself before it turns on me No I don’t trust my memories anymore They ain’t the friends I thought they were before They used to be so fond Now my faith in them is gone No I don’t trust my memories anymore No I don’t trust my memories anymore They ain’t the friends I thought they were before They used to be so fond Now my faith in them is gone I I don’t trust my memories anymore They used to be so fond Now my faith in them is gone I I don’t trust my memories anymore

Like A Hurricane

Well I prayed for peaceful waters But the storms already came So let it rain Let it rain When the going gets a little harder Don’t throw it all away Even though they’re moving slow The winds of change are gonna blow like a hurricane

When you’re coming from the bottom you don’t feel like number one They’ll be days that seem impossible until you get’em done I’ve been running to the things I thought I was running from But I’ll run until the day my breath is taken from my lungs Well I prayed for peaceful waters But the storms already came So let it rain Let it rain When the going gets a little harder Don’t throw it all away Even though they’re moving slow The winds of change are gonna blow like a hurricane When you’ve made it to the top you don’t feel like number one You can’t stop because they count on you to be what you’ve become It’s not an option but to run at things you should be running from Cause you’ve gotten what you wanted now you’ve got to get it done Well I prayed for peaceful waters But the storms already came So let it rain Let it rain When the going gets a little harder Don’t throw it all away Even though they’re moving slow The winds of change are gonna blow like a hurricane Well I prayed for peaceful waters But the storms already came So let it rain Let it rain When the going gets a little harder Don’t throw it all away Even though they’re moving slow The winds of change are gonna blow like a hurricane

How It Works

Well they said we’d never make it And they just wonder how it works alright Yeah time does tell a story And time does fly We’re just fine alright

You need to know that she still drives me crazy In every good way, yeah Ain’t nobody else on earth gets to me The way she moves me Yeah yeah Well love said that we’d make it They still wonder how it works alright Yeah time will tell our story And time does fly And we’re still fine alright You need to know she still drives me crazy In every good way, yeah Ain’t nobody else on earth gets to me The way she moves me Yeah yeah And even though she still drives me crazy In every good way, yeah Ain’t nobody else on earth gets to me The way she moves me Yeah yeah

Nobody Knows How To Read

Chasing our tails And calling it hell And running ‘cause running it’s free While they’re filling our heads With tin penny dread Of whatever they want us to see But we’re here for the show We already know that it ends like some old tragedy I’ve got my ear to the ground, there’s signs all around Nobody knows how to read

Agendas are sold to the masses A train wreck, a car crash is all that they show As soon as we’re cut into classes They shake up the bottle and watch it explode Time never changes And don’t stay the same like the motives of man seem to do We can bitch we can moan But that ships long gone And it ain’t sailing back round too soon Are you enjoying the show You already know that it ends like some old tragedy So keep your ear to the ground, there’s signs all around Nobody knows how to read Agendas are sold to the masses A train wreck, a car crash is all that they show As soon as we’re cut into classes They shake up the bottle and watch it explode

Workin down my third cup of coffee Waiting on the grey to burn away Seems the world outside my window is getting colder Pray for my shoulders

I finally just stopped turning on the TV All it ever does is bring me down Til this old wicked world starts turning slower Pray for my shoulders Heaven only knows How time can take its toll Lay burdens on a soul along the way The weight can hang so heavy It gets harder standing steady And holding on gets tougher everyday So tonight when you get on your knees won’t you pray For my shoulders Heaven only knows How time can take its toll Lay burdens on a soul along the way Yeah the weight can hang so heavy It gets harder standing steady And holding on gets tougher everyday So tonight when you get on your knees won’t you pray Yeah tonight when you get on your knees won’t you pray Working down my third cup of coffee Waiting on the grey to burn away

Dying Isn’t Cheap

There’s an ashtray of crushed out cigarettes And an empty bourbon bottle by his bed A pile of change, a worn-out match book with a name And a number scribbled on it that can’t be read Living all alone and in the red I guess sometimes it’s worse than being dead

And he said, dying isn’t cheap It’s a mighty hefty cost When you’re doing it like me You’ve already lost If I had to buy my way to heaven Guess I’d go to hell Since the only thing she left me Was this old soul to sell Since she set me free Living don’t come easy and dying isn’t cheap He said, that woman she was everything But I guess I wasn’t everything to her For that woman I gave anything Now I’d give anything to drown the hurt I guess I’ll live forever missing her Because the pills and top shelf whiskey just don’t work Dying isn’t cheap It’s a mighty hefty cost And doing it like me You’ve already lost If I had to buy my way to heaven Guess I’d go to hell Since the only thing she left me Was this old soul to sell Since she set me free Living don’t come easy and dying isn’t cheap If I had to buy my way to heaven Guess I’d go to hell Since the only thing she left me Was this old soul to sell Since she set me free Living don’t come easy and dying isn’t cheap

There ain’t nothing worse than losing somebody Love is such a precious thing to find And I’m the first to admit, it might kill me If I wasn’t so damn stubborn all the time

Yeah I know life ain’t easy Man believe me I lose more than I win Just gotta roll with the flow and the punches You might get hit You’re gonna get back up again Hard times like to hit when you ain’t ready You can’t see them coming when you’re looking the other way Everybody’s out there fighting something We all get the blues when we’ve still got dues to pay So just know life ain’t easy Man believe me you’re gonna lose more than you win Just gotta roll with the flow and the punches You might get hit You’re gonna get back up again Yeah I know life ain’t easy Man believe me I lose more than I win Just gotta roll with the flow and the punches You might get hit You’re gonna get back up again You might get hit You’re gonna get back up again

When The Whiskey Calls The Shots

Well it’s closing time, I’m down to my last dime You can bet your ass I’m in a world of trouble If I’d a stuck with beer, I’d been out of here But the man in the bar room mirror is still drowning doubles

When the hard stuff hits my veins I’m a puppet on a string That old 90 proof just won’t let me stop Drop a needle on that old jukebox I’ll be a fool on a stool but it ain’t my fault That’s what happens when whiskey whiskey calls the shots When the morning comes, my old lady son Gonna come undone loud and clear But it’ll happen again cause every now and then My old low down no good friend gets in my ear When the hard stuff hits my veins I’m a puppet on a string That old 90 proof just won’t let me stop Drop a needle on that old jukebox I’ll be a fool on a stool but it ain’t my fault That’s what happens when whiskey whiskey calls the shots That’s what happens when whiskey whiskey calls the shots Yeah I do That’s what happens when whiskey whiskey calls the shots Let’s go one more time That’s what happens when whiskey calls the shots I can do this all day That’s what happens when whiskey calls the shots

I spent my lifetime wishin’ the waitress would come around Tellin’ jokes, shootin’ pool on the other side of town The whistle blows at five o’clock there’s only one place I’ll be found Down at Ernie’s icehouse liftin’ longnecks to that good old country sound

And talkin’ ’bout the good old times Braggin’ bout how it used to be And I’ve worn out the same old lines Now it seems nothing’s news to me

There’s nothin’ like a steel guitar cryin’ in the night There’s nothin’ like a sawdust floor and a good old friendly fight I’d finally find my way back home and you’d patch up my face But that was another time and another place

Now we’re talkin’ ’bout the good old times Braggin’ bout how it used to be I’ve worn out the same old lines Now it seems nothing’s news to me

I wonder how I came to be the know-it-all I am And how the world ever got used to me

Talkin’ ’bout the good old times Braggin’ bout how it used to be But I’ve worn out the same old lines Now it seems nothing’s news to me

I got a half a six pack of Old Milwaukee And a half a bag of weed I can’t do it like I did when I was a kid This is all I’m going to need Because I know you always worry about me drinking my dinner But I don’t do that anymore I got me a sweet girl at home She’s keeping food on the table And at night she keeps me warm So I’ve got me this piece of paper And I got my favorite pen I know it’s been a little while And talking’s not my style So I just had to write my friend

Hey I’m doing alright Mamma I’m ok, I know your late night talks with Jesus Have helped me on my way I know it wasn’t always easy Raising my father’s son And your son will be alright If the shows keep comin’ This old guitar and me are still strummin’ I know you always knew I always took it way too far But I’m doing alright now Mamma I’m doing alright now Mamma I’m doing alright now Mamma I’m doing ok You remember the time when I was stuck in L.A. And I didn’t have a job And I didn’t have a way to pay the bills that I racked up Yeah, you kept me from losing my truck Yeah, I’m a little better off now Than I was then But it’s sure nice to see you calling me when I’m out there on the road Yeah, you calling to say have a good show Hey I’m doing alright Mamma I’m ok, I know your late night talks with Jesus Have helped me on my way I know it wasn’t always easy Raising my father’s son And your son will be alright If the shows keep comin’ This old guitar and me are still strummin’ I know you always knew I always took it way too far But I’m doing alright now Mamma I’m doing alright now Mamma I’m doing alright now Mamma I’m doing ok

What Else Is New

California’s still on fire And it don’t rain no more in Texas There’s a few less ice caps way up north of here Mother Russia stays pissed-off Yeah, she’s got some big old bombs Still throwin’ around her weight after all these years

And the price of gasoline is enough to make you scream Yeah, the cost of livin’ goes up and the pay goes down I don’t care what’s right or left, y’all I’m just out here with the rest In the middle class, that still means broke to me What else is new? I’m tellin’ you I’m tellin’ what the blue collar man is goin’ thru We don’t let no bad news hang around It’s the same old situation All the problems facin’ our great nation So to hell to all those bringin’ that bad news down And the politicians will never know How to let their egos go No, they could not give two damns ’bout you and me Yeah, but they still got their pensions With some tactics they’d rather not mention That’s the price we pay for them livin’ free What else is new? I’m tellin’ you All the trouble a blue collar man is goin’ thru We don’t let no bad news hang around It’s the same old situation All the problems facin’ our great nation So to hell to all those bringin’ that bad news down

What else is new? I’m tellin’ you All the trouble a blue collar man is goin thru We don’t let no bad news hang around It’s the same old situation All the problems facin’ our great nation So to hell to all those bringin’ that bad news down

All to hell with all those bringin’ that bad news down All to hell with all those bringin’ that bad news down

Cast No Stones

I cast no stones I build no walls And I tell the truth The truth comes to call And I try to walk That narrow way Sometimes I go over the lines And I won’t make it back till the next day

But I cast no stones What gives you the right To tell me my business Good God man your out of your mind So put up your Bible Or let me get mine I’m not draggin’ the whole world to hell You’re wasting my time I don’t talk with Jesus As much as I should I don’t read that good book Everyday like I could But I like to stop At the end of the day I pray that I hurt nobody And somebody new found their way But I cast no stones What gives you the right To tell me my business Good God man your out of your mind So put up your Bible Or let me get mine I’m not draggin’ the whole world to hell You’re wasting my time But I cast no stones What gives you the right To tell me my business Good God man your out of your mind So put up your Bible Or let me get mine I’m not draggin’ the whole world to hell You’re wasting my time Say a prayer for me brother And I’ll see you on down the line

We’re Gonna Dance

I’ve been gone for way too long And I’ve been working way too hard And I know, it’s taking it’s toll on you But tonight I’ll make things right By the fire with some candlelight And I’ll tell you What we’re gonna do

We’re not going out We’re gonna stay right here at home There won’t be anyone in the world When we’re all alone We’re gonna Lay the worries back and love until we’re back on track If you’ll just give me this chance Move the couch, lock the door, socks move well on a hardwood floor And we’re gonna dance We’re gonna dance The rush of life can get you down If you let it, it runs you to the ground But that’s just life We’re not going out, we’re gonna stay right here at home There won’t be anyone in the world When we’re all alone We’re gonna Lay the worries back and love until we’re back on track If you’ll just give me this chance Move the couch, lock the door, socks move well on a hardwood floor And we’re gonna dance We’re gonna dance

Tell me old man, where have you been I’ve been reading those stories, about chasing the wind I guess I’ve come back with one or two I’ve never really quite known what to do

Tell me old man, what are you looking for Has it been worth all you’ve given and so much more Sometimes the things we seek skew the point Sometimes the whole damn world seems out of joint And it makes me wonder And it makes me want to live So I’ll steal freedom while there’s still some And take the whole world in If I could only leave my worries with the birds of the wind And I know one day there’ll be solace So I’ll just live ‘til then If I could only leave my worries with the birds of the wind Old man I know you’ve had questions too The same ones we’ve been askin’ of you You just roll on back out of sight Stealin’ away again, like a child in the night Still full of wonder And you still want to live You steal freedom while there’s still some And take the whole world in You’ve learned to leave your worries with the birds of the wind And you know one day there’ll be solace So you’ll just live ‘til then And you learn to leave your worries with the birds of the wind If I could only leave my worries with the birds of the wind

Loud and Heavy

Loud thunder heavy rain Thin line between joy and pain It’s a long strange trip it’s all insane You ain’t never gonna be the same Living life through the night Thin line of a lightning strike Sometimes the only light When the moon is tucked away

Pistons pumpin’ Minds are racin’ It’s hard to sleep man When I’m shakin’ Bad news surrounds me Its always found me Creeping up when things are good Yeah the dark days find a way Loud thunder heavy rain Thin line between joy and pain It’s a long strange trip it’s all insane You ain’t never gonna be the same Living life through the night Thin line of a lightning strike Sometimes the only light When the moon is tucked away The camera captures All the things that Make us turn from What we see It’s always moving It don’t stop rolling I haven’t slept in three damn days Yeah, but who needs that anyway Loud thunder heavy rain Thin line between joy and pain It’s a long strange trip it’s all insane You ain’t never gonna be the same Living life through the night Thin line of a lightning strike Sometimes the only light When the moon is tucked away Loud thunder heavy rain Thin line between joy and pain It’s a long strange trip it’s all insane You ain’t never gonna be the same Living life through the night Thin line of a lightning strike Sometimes the only light When the moon is tucked away Loud thunder heavy rain Loud thunder heavy rain Thin line between joy and pain A long strange trip it’s all insane You ain’t never gonna be the same Loud thunder heavy rain Loud thunder heavy rain

My friend David, was a good kid He had my back, always knew he did He was different than most And maybe I was too Hanging out with the in-crowd just wasn’t our thing There was a whole lot more Than we could see on these plains Well, some people just seem to get stuck, and hang around It’s college or trade school for those with the means There’s never been any small town for those in between Yeah the poor folks they go to work, or they go to war I did fifteen hundreds days in the corps And I got back, nothing looked the same anymore I got on with the local police, it just seemed to fit Things have changed

By then David had a daughter and a son And a rap sheet to prove all the time that he’d done He was just a burned out beat down shell of my old friend And on a three day binge he was speeding through town And I bumped the wailers just to try and slow him down He didn’t know that it was me, and he took off Oh how things change And I found his truck in the floodplain upside down It was a hell of a rain I don’t know if he’d drowned Or if he died on impact, it must have rolled three times Yeah, the only thing to make matters worse Is that his mama’s a late night ER nurse And he was DOA, she just about lost her mind David’s wife drops by every once in a while And childhood stories always make her smile But somehow we always go back to that day And I found his truck in the floodplain upside down It was a hell of a rain, I don’t know if he’d drowned Or if he died on impact, it must have rolled three times Yeah, the only thing to make matters worse Is that his mama’s a late night ER nurse And he was DOA, she just about lost her mind Ain’t it the times

You’re thinking of leavin’ tonight Go on and go If you’re sure it’s the right thing to do You know I was never the kind for draggin’ things out And I thought neither were you

It hurts me to see you unhappy, and it hurts me to know It’s me that’s made you that way So maybe it’s me that should go So you don’t go on hatin’ Us both for just one more day Out on the line walkin’ the tightrope It ain’t always easy But I’ve always been true You don’t have to tell me If you’d done any different God only knows it’s how this one goes Is it me or you If I may just leave you one question What took so long What’s kept you around all this time If I’d known somethin’ was wrong I might could’a changed things it’s too late and it seems that I’m blind I’ve been so wrong for so long With no way of knowing, what for At least I’d have tried if I’d known But it don’t matter, anymore Out on the line walkin’ the tightrope It ain’t always easy But I’ve always been true You don’t have to tell me If you’d done any different God only knows it’s how this one goes Is it me or you God only knows it’s how this one goes Is it me or you?

Some folks like to look, they like to point They like to push, they like to shove Some folks like to talk about the things they have The things they love But things are that, just things, and I don’t give a damn I must seem trite

I’m not that old, I’m not too young I’m not too smart, I sure ain’t dumb I walked around and round and round, most every place I’ve been found and all I’ve found Is most places usually seem the same to me And I talk to people off the street, my line of work I tend to meet the kind of folk that seem like-minded Those of us just trying to find our way So let’s just meet up at some place We can sort it out And I talk with people off the street, my line of work I tend to meet the kind of folk that seem like-minded Those of us just trying to find our way So let’s just meet up at some place We can sort it out This God-forsaken world, it chews you up and spits you out It scuffs your shoes, it takes most everything you got And then it tries you with the blues But that’s alright The blues is somethin’ proves that you still feel Some folks like to look, they like to point They like to push, they like to shove Some folks like to talk about the things they have The things they love But things are that, just things, and I don’t give a damn And I’m alright

Ready For The Times To Get Better

It’s been a too long time with no peace of mind I’m ready for the times to get better I’ve got to tell you I’ve been racking my brain Hopin’ to find a way out I’ve had enough of this continual rain Changes are comin’ no doubt

It’s been a too long time with no peace of mind And I’m ready for the times to get better You seem to want from me what I cannot give I feel so lonesome at times I have a dream that I wish I could live It’s burning holes in my mind It’s been a too long time with no peace of mind And I’m ready for the times to get better It’s been a too long time with no peace of mind And I’m ready for the times to get better Na na na na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na It’s been a too long time with no peace of mind I’m ready for the times to get better It’s been a too long time with no peace of mind I’m ready for the times to get better Na na na na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na

I remember that summer I was ten years old When our days, ceased to shine No, you could not take a breath When those black blizzards came Strippin’ land, in dire need of rain

There was dirt on the floor As mama swept all day long Leavin’ trails of tears and mud down her face There was dirt in our beds And there was dirt in our clothes And there was dirt, in the little that we ate We had heard about the market’s fall A couple years before But the fields and the harvest all seemed fine Sometimes the things that kill us That which we don’t know That strip the land of everything but pride Stay close together That’s all we knew to get by I recall a helpless feelin’ First time that I saw my father cry Lookin’ back on everything we had, on everything we lost Still makes me wonder, was stayin’ worth the cost Alot of town folk up and left They boarded up the schools and banks and the churches And that to me, was wrong Come next year it would be better Will the last one standin’ tall before the walls Show the most resolve They announced the New Deal With the Conservation Act and then the Relief Fund But we were on our knees There was little hope by then So we just stood there in that line And we thanked the man for that little bit of cheese Stay close together That’s all we knew to get by And I recall a helpless feelin’ The first time that I saw my father cry Lookin’ back on everything we had, on everything we lost Still makes me wonder, was stayin’ worth the cost?

Rock and Roll

I don’t wanna rock and roll no more At least not the way I did, back before That life tried to kill me To tell the truth it never thrilled me I don’t wanna rock and roll no more I don’t wanna rock and roll

I don’t need that whiskey anymore Least not the way I did back before That stuff tried to kill me To tell the truth it never thrilled me I don’t want that whiskey anymore I don’t need that whiskey I don’t mean to disappoint you But there’s chance I’m going to Some people only like me when I’m stoned Yeah the crowd was a whole lot bigger But I just can’t remember I don’t need that whiskey anymore I don’t need that whiskey I don’t wanna miss you anymore I just want you right here in my arms This ol’ life still trying to kill me You’re the only thing that’s filled me I don’t wanna miss you anymore I don’t wanna miss you And I don’t mean to disappoint you But you know I’m goin to Sometimes I’d lay it all down and come back home Yeah, the crowd was a whole lot bigger When you were right there in the center I don’t wanna miss you anymore I don’t need that whiskey anymore I don’t wanna rock and roll

Must Be The Whiskey

No I’m not goin’ crazy, but lately my head and my heart Seem to be at least a million miles apart My heart says to love ya, my head says to run It’s like my heart is too afraid to tell my head what it’s done I know that it can never be the way it was Even though you’ll be the death of me I can’t give you up Too much is not enough; it’s not the love, it’s not the lust that grips me It must be the whiskey

I’ve been drinkin’ to remember and drinkin’ to forget I got “I love you” on my mind, I got Jim Beam on my breath And loneliness has got the rest, I’ve got nothin’ left within me It must be the whiskey Oh I’m not goin’ crazy, but lately these thoughts in my head Are a whirlwind of a world of a million regrets All the things I should’ve done, all the things I should’ve said All the pain that comes with hatin’ the mess you’ve made of yourself I know I’m chasin’ rainbows thinkin’ I could make it work But the fact is that my actions speak louder than my words And it only makes it worse thinkin’ of her, thinkin’ she’ll forgive me It must be the whiskey I’ve been drinkin’ to remember and drinkin’ to forget I got “I love you” on my mind, I got Jim Beam on my breath And loneliness has got the rest, I’ve got nothin’ left within me It must be the whiskey I’ve been drinkin’ to remember and drinkin’ to forget I got “I love you” on my mind, I got Jim Beam on my breath And loneliness has got the rest, I’ve got nothin’ left within me Sometimes it hits me whenever I’m a little tipsy Oh, it hits me whenever I’m a little tipsy It must be the whiskey It must be the whiskey It must be the whiskey It’s that whiskey It must be the whiskey

Where does time go, It’s gone away Time was on my side, yesterday So much can change, between then and now Where does time go

Where do dreams die, along the way Dreams are all we had, yesterday Who told all the vampires of the world They were welcome anyway Where do dreams die Who gave who the message Who gave who the hands of time Who gave who the job to take, reason and the rhyme Like another Holden Caulfield I’m a Catcher in the Rye Who told who to take the dreams out back to die Who told who to take the dreams out back to die Who gave who the message Who gave who the hands of time Who gave who the job to take, reason and the rhyme Like another Holden Caulfield I’m a Catcher in the Rye Who told who to take the dreams out back to die Who told who to take the dreams out back to die Who gave who the message Who gave who the hands of time Who gave who the message Who gave who the hands of time Who told all the vampires of the world They were welcome anyway

My whole view of the word has changed I guess that comes with age I don’t believe there’s good in every man Like I did back then

I may drink more than I should You’ve seen me on the floor Spend my lifetime in this cage, I built around me Bangin’ on the doors And no words Could ever say how much I need you With you here You make this life I lead worth living Heaven knows I broke your heart I can’t take that away All I’m worth is just this promise that I’ve made to you To stand beside you just like you have stood beside me And no words Could ever say how much I need you With you here You make this life I lead worth living You could be much better off God knows without me And that’s why I just can’t find the words You could be much better off God knows without me And that’s why I just can’t find the words

Been Around

I don’t run from guilt you see my conscience lets me know at least a thousand times or better every day Things I’ve done mistakes I’ve made, raised feelings I’ll lay in some grave if ever I am finally laid to rest

If there’s time to pray before I die, I pray dear Lord you know that I was a righteous man that somehow lost his way Face me down when I shall pass so the world can kiss my ass and Hell can’t come and get me from behind

I’ve danced in the flames and I’ve been burned I’ve walked on the harder side of life, I’ve takin’ all the wrong turns I’ve been around I’ve been down And I’ve been wasted I fight with myself sometimes I lose I got me an angel on my shoulder, but I’ve got the devil too, I get down I get around and I get wasted Twenty-seven years along I’ve tried to make them right all wrong and I’ve nearly died a few times on my way Well I’ve seen the face of God first hand and I’ve danced with the devil man, I’ve needed help and grab for both of their hands I’ve danced in the flames and I’ve been burned I’ve walked on the harder side of life, I’ve takin’ all the wrong turns I’ve been around I’ve been down And I’ve been wasted I fight with myself, sometimes I lose I got me an angel on my shoulder, but I’ve got the devil too, I get down I get around and I get wasted I fight with myself Sometimes I lose I got me an angel on my shoulder, but I’ve got the devil too I get down I get around and I get wasted I don’t run from guilt you see my conscience lets me know at least a thousand times or better every day

Big Last Name

Daddy must’ve told her when she was sixteen Don’t settle for a poor man’s diamond ring Take a lesson from your mama, girl, it ain’t no shame To find a man with some money and a big last name

She wore that crown at the Rose Parade All them boys starin’ at her thinkin’ maybe someday All their credit put together couldn’t get her to the game She wants a man with some money and a big last name She’s had the pick of the litter since the day she was born Ain’t nothin’ good enough in this town She’s a product of her mama, she gets what she wants Ain’t layin’ that silver spoon down She wants to be in a picture in a gold-leaf frame With a man with some money and a big last name She’s had the pick of the litter since the day she was born Ain’t nothin’ good enough in this town She’s a product of her mama, she gets what she wants Ain’t layin’ that silver spoon down She wants to be in a picture in a gold-leaf frame With a man with some money and a big last name Man with some money and a big last name Well she met a rich banker down in San Antone He had a pre-nup ready for her name to be on The she came home early to a pretty young thing In bed with some money and a big last name In bed with some money and a big last name In bed with some money and a big last name

I know it’s hard to find the words so often standin’ face-to-face Sometimes it takes a thin white sheet to put things into place Things that I could never say come floodin’ out somehow upon these lines

I’m still fightin’ the same battles I’ve been fightin’ all these years A dreamer is not a dreamer unless you’re livin’ with a fear What they say will be forgotten, all that’s done will be for naught And why And it’s been a long time, Lord, since I sat down and had a cry It’s sometimes overwhelmin’ and I can’t tell ya why But I remember Jackson singin’ “Doctor, doctor, please My eyes And my heroes, they’re all dyin’ or they’re sittin’ in a cell Due to years of medicatin’ minds that hurt so well There’s a thin line, don’t you see, between genius and insanity Which am I One thing that scares the hell in me is livin’ with mortality And worryin’ that I’m insane talkin’ to a God unseen Must surely make me crazy, so crazy’s what I’ll be ‘Til I’m gone ‘Til I’m gone And I’ll scream out to the sun and to the moon and to the stars I’ll scream until my voice finds you, no matter where you are I’ll scream until I’ve got no breath and all that’s left to take is death And I’m done When I’m done Oh, oh-oh-oh Oh, oh Oh, oh-oh-oh Oh, oh Oh, oh-oh-oh Oh, oh Oh, oh-oh-oh Oh, oh

Somewhere in the Middle

Couldn’t have ever dawned on me All the things that I would be I I never really looked out quite that far It’s never been a simple thing To see the world with a young man’s brain, with An old man’s heart, restless soul

Yeah, my family went broke in my eighteenth year Dad took a job many miles from here that That was alright by me I was on my own I had a band, found a job, life was alright I worked when I had to, we played all the time, only Got through that first year of college, alright But I learned more on the freight docks Driving forklifts on the 3 o’clock AM shift In the winter time, man it got cold Selling guitars on the west coast Going hungry, chasin’ ghost around and around we would go And I saw it all tendin’ bar at night Treatin’ saints and sinners right It’s a good thing to do all the time You never know who you’re talkin’ to
But always know who’s watching you Keep your feet movin’ straight down the line I’ve known a lot of real good men Grad school or no school I’ve called em’ my friends, I’m I’m Somewhere in the Middle and that’s just fine No, I don’t give a damn how much money you make If your last shirt has pockets, take all you can take, I’m I’m goin’ out with nothin’ like I came in Cause I learned more on the freight docks Driving forklifts on the 3 o’clock AM shift In the winter time, man it got cold Selling guitars on the west coast Going hungry, chasin’ ghost around and around we would go And I saw it all tendin’ bar at night Treatin’ saints and sinners right It’s a good thing, to do all the time You never know who you’re talkin’ to But always know who’s watching you Keep your feet movin’ straight down the line But I learned more on the freight docks Driving forklifts on the 3 o’clock AM shift In the winter time, man it got cold Selling guitars on the west coast Going hungry, chasin’ ghost around and around we would go And I saw it all tendin’ bar at night Treatin’ saints and sinners right It’s a good thing to do all the time You never know who you’re talkin’ to But always know who’s watching you Keep your feet movin’ straight down the line Somewhere in the middle and that’s just fine Somewhere in the middle and that’s just fine

Can’t Quit Enough

I’ve played every honky tonk and roadside bar and juke joint Between here and Minneapolis You know I’ve lived these miles There’s a Haggard man behind these eyes and smile

I picked up the guitar ’round the time I turned fourteen Lit that fire, been burnin’ tires, hard booze, both ends and gasoline Stayin’ wired Come back down the best that we know how We know now We’re all tryin’ to quit smokin’ Tired of laughin’, tired of jokin’ ‘Bout the habits we all have slowly creepin’ up We all gotta die from somethin’ Livin’ kills you, life is tough But I can’t quit ’cause I can’t quit enough I’ve felt all the pressures playin’ to an empty room And the pleasures of a crowd that’s singin’ loud to every word to all my songs But the band and me, Lord, keep rollin’ on We roll on We’re all tryin’ to quit smokin’ Tired of laughin’, tired of jokin’ ‘Bout the habits we all have slowly creepin’ up We all gotta die from somethin’ Livin’ kills you, life is tough But I can’t quit ’cause I can’t quit enough We’re all tryin’ to quit smokin’ Tired of laughin’, tired of jokin’ ‘Bout the habits we all have slowly creepin’ up We all gotta die from somethin’ Livin’ kills you, life is tough But I can’t quit cause I can’t quit enough I’ll never quit cause I can’t quit enough

I’m not the devil you think that I am It ain’t no excuse, but I’m just a man I slipped and I fell, it got outta hand But I’m not the devil you think that I am

It wasn’t no gun, held to my head I got caught up believing, in lies that were said In a moment of weakness I stumbled and I made my bed I’m not the devil you think that I am It ain’t no excuse, but I’m just a man I slipped and I fell, it got outta hand But I’m not the devil you think that I am There’s 10,000 reasons For you not to stay And no one would blame you If you want it that way It might take some time But I’ll show, you that I’m worth the wait I’m not the devil you think that I am It ain’t no excuse, but I’m just a man I slipped and I fell, it got outta hand But I’m not the devil you think that I am And I’ll spend forever, do all that I can To prove I’m Not The Devil you think that I am And I’m not the devil

Somewhere Between I Love You and I’m Leavin’

I’m somewhere between I love you and I’m leavin’ Somewhere between I need you and lettin’ go And it scares me so when I look hard I find no good reasons I’m somewhere between I love you and I’m leavin’

Somewhere between I miss you and I’m gone Runnin’ hard through the middle of the night, and you spend yours alone I hold you close then I let you go, no leavin’ well-enough alone I’m somewhere between I miss you and I’m gone And the ties that bind, they hold my mind No matter where I go, I’m alone Here with you or out there tearin’ down some road Nowhere is home And you’re the only thing on earth that I believe in I’m somewhere between I love you and I’m leavin’ And the ties that bind, they hold my mind No matter where I go, I’m alone Here with you or out there tearin’ down some road Nowhere is home And you’re the only thing on earth that I believe in I can stay or I can go and not break even I’m somewhere between I love you and I’m leavin’ I’m somewhere between I love you and I’m leavin’

Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow

Daddy won a radio, He tuned it to a country show. I was rockin’ in the cradle To the cryin’ of a steel guitar. Mama used to sing to me. She taught me that sweet harmony. Now she worries cause never thought I’d ever really take it this far.

Singin’ in the bars and Chasin’ that neon rainbow Livin’ that honky-tonk dream, Cause all I’ve ever wanted is to Pick this guitar and sing. Just tryin’ to be somebody Just wanna be heard and seen. A chasin’ that neon rainbow Livin’ that honky-tonk dream. An atlas and a coffee cup, 5 pickers in an old Dodge truck, Headin’ down to Houston for a show On Saturday night. This overhead is killin’ me, Half the time I sing for free, But when the crowd’s in to it Lord It makes this thing I’m doin’ seem right. Standin’ in the spotlight. Chasin’ that neon rainbow I’m a livin’ that honky-tonk dream. Cause all I’ve ever wanted is to Pick this guitar and sing Just tryin’ to be somebody, That’s want to be heard and seen, Chasin’ that neon rainbow, Livin’ that honky-tonk dream Daddy’s got a radio He won it 30 years ago. He said “Son I just know we’re gonna Hear you sing on it some day”. I made it up to Music Row Lordy don’t the wheels turn slow. Still I wouldn’t trade a minute, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Just show me to the stage, I’m Chasin’ that neon rainbow, I’m a livin’ that honky-tonk dream, Cause all I’ve ever wanted, Is to pick this guitar and sing. Just tryin’ to be somebody That’s wanna be heard and seen. Chasin’ that neon rainbow, Livin’ that honky-tonk dream. Oh I’m chasin’ that neon rainbow, Livin’ that honky-tonk dream.

I’m tellin’ you All the trouble a blue collar man is goin’ thru We don’t let no bad news hang around It’s the same old situation All the problems facin’ our great nation So to hell to all those bringin’ that bad news down What else is new? I’m tellin’ you All the trouble a blue collar man is goin thru We don’t let no bad news hang around It’s the same old situation All the problems facin’ our great nation So to hell to all those bringin’ that bad news down All to hell with all those bringin’ that bad news down All to hell with all those bringin’ that bad news down

I’ve seen the sun for the first time In a week or so I wipe the sleep from my eyes I’ve got nowhere to go A cup of coffee in my hand I’ve got me a smoke There nothing doin’, I just wanna be alone

The right end of the sunrise It sure looks nice To see a new day taking shape Not startin’ with no night Well I been rollin’ along on a thin dime And I’m happy to be home Please forgive me, I just wanna be alone Well I’m gonna finish this pot of coffee And I’m gonna put me another on Well I might grab my thread-bear Martin And pick me out a song I know I’ll sit right here, I’ll smoke one more And just enjoy the dawn I’m not angry, I just wanna be alone Spent my lifetime runnin’ around It suits me fine Shakin’ hands and one night stands That’s what gets me by But the days gettin’ short And the songs gettin’ long It’s time to go No, I’m not angry, I just wanna be alone Well I’m gonna finish this pot of coffee And I’m gonna put me another on Well I might grab my thread-bear Martin And pick me out a song I know I’ll sit right here, I’ll smoke one more And just enjoy the dawn Now I’m not angry, I just wanna be alone Please forgive me, I just wanna be alone There’s nothin’ doin’, I just wanna be alone

I didn’t wanna shoot that man But he heard that I was fast You know that liquor gave him the courage To put a man to the ground But nobody saw I couldn’t claim no self-defense So I took off with the morning sun, Running from my sins

I ended up in every town Where all the bad men go And they’ve been running just like me Someone always knows He’ll say, “Ain’t you the man who shot that boy?” Who wanted his turn to dance So will I die in some street that night No never had a chance I never meant to be a bad man I just had a fast hand Ain’t going to be nothing in hell I haven’t lived through here I’m just going to walk out and wish you all goodnight I never meant to be a bad man I just had a fast hand I ended up in Fort Worth ‘Cause no one knows me here And time has a funny way of taken away the years But I don’t mind the changes Or the age that’s in my face Because there is a piece of my soul In every man I’ve killed In every God forsaken place Never meant to be a bad man I just had a fast hand Ain’t going to be nothing in hell I haven’t lived through here I’m just going to walk out yeah tonight I’ll save your life I never meant to be a bad man I just had a fast hand

I walk around on pins and needles Around people I can’t even name I keep on passin’ church steeples Prayin’ that my God is still the same I been wanderin’ like a fool too blind to see Maybe it ain’t the bottle that I need

I need a shot of holy water I need it to chase down my demons And burn ’em just a little bit hotter I’ve been havin’ drinks with the devil in this neon town I need a shot of holy water to wash it down Lost in a land of smoke and mirrors I do my best to just stay clear of my yesterdays I’ve been runnin’ so long, now I’m runnin’ from myself Tired of runnin’ away I’m still tryin’ to get through to the man I wanna be Maybe I’m not so gone that I can’t see I need a shot of holy water I need it to chase down my demons And burn ’em just a little bit hotter I’ve been havin’ drinks with the devil in this neon town I need a shot of holy water to wash it down I need a shot of holy water I need a shot of holy water I need a shot of holy water I need a shot of holy water I need a shot of holy water I need it to chase down my demons And burn ’em just a little bit hotter I’ve been havin’ drinks with the devil in this neon town I need a shot of holy water to wash it down (Holy, holy water) I need a shot of holy water (holy, holy water) I need a shot of holy water (holy, holy water) (Holy, holy water) (Holy, holy water) (Holy, holy water) (Holy, holy water)

No Guarantees

And it’s gonna get hard, for it gets easy, I oughta know I hear the voice of Jesus and I hear the devil talkin’ Just the same And it seems they’re tryin’ to talk over each other Any given day I’ve lived the words in red so many times By now I thought that I might see I guess I’m sayin’ this life just ain’t the way I thought that it might be

I been wanderin’ down the hallways Ya’ll roads just like some kid out skippin’ school By the time that I was seventeen I figured I was done with all the rules I turn 35 this year and I’m still runnin’ hard For somethin’ I can’t see The only thing in life that’s guaranteed There are no guarantees And it’s gonna get hard for it gets easy, I oughta know It’s gonna take a lotta rain, for the seed you planted, starts to grow The more I know, the more I know that I don’t know I know nothin’s free And there ain’t no guarantees The more I know, the more I know that I don’t know I know nothin’s free And there ain’t no guarantees And it’s gonna get hard for it gets easy, I oughta know It’s gonna take a lotta rain, for the seed you planted, starts to grow The more I know, the more I know that I don’t know I know nothin’s free And there ain’t no guarantees

He wakes with the chickens and the Waco sun He’s got mouths to feed and cattle to run Same as his daddy and his daddy done It’s all he’s ever known In this modern world movin’ break-neck fast He’s a dyin’ breed, a thing of the past He’ll be damned if he don’t hit back If you stand in his way When there’s nothin’ more to say

So here’s to the lifers The struggle-and-strifers Workin’ long after the day is done Here’s to the throw-backs The cowboys in old hats The last of the great generation It seems they still dream She’s a renaissance girl with a fire in her soul She’s got a pocket full of nothin’, nobody tells her no She flew into town twenty years ago With a guitar and a song She’s been playin’ them rooms but she ain’t got far Been livin’ off tips in them Broadway bars She’s a troubadour queen but time left its mark The scene’s passed her by In a world that’s passed her by So here’s to the lifers The struggle-and-strifers Workin’ long after the day is done Here’s to the throw-backs The cowboys in old hats The last of the great generation It seems they still dream No they don’t give up and they don’t give in When things don’t go their way Yeah we’re getting’ knocked down Yeah we’re getting’ back up Live to die another day So here’s to the lifers The struggle-and-strifers Workin’ long after the day is done Here’s to the throw-backs The cowboys in old hats The last of the great generation It seems they still dream

Don’t think that I don’t think about Colorado It’s about the only thing I ever do Don’t think that I don’t think about Colorado Don’t think I ain’t thinkin’ ’bout you

Even though our love might’ve gone down burnin’ Like the sunset on the mountains out in Vail And our best days might have been some I’d forgotten But our worst days I remember much too well Don’t think that I don’t think about Colorado It’s about the only thing I ever do Don’t think that I don’t think about Colorado Don’t think I ain’t thinkin’ ’bout you I look back to when we carved our names in marble On an aspen by the cabin where we stayed And I wonder if that tree’s still strong and standin’ Despite the broken promises we made Don’t think that I don’t think about Colorado It’s about the only thing I ever do Don’t think that I don’t think about Colorado Don’t think I ain’t thinkin’ ’bout you Don’t think that I don’t think about Colorado It’s about the only thing I ever do Don’t think that I don’t think about Colorado Don’t think I ain’t thinkin’ ’bout you Don’t think I ain’t thinkin’ ’bout you

Hippies and Cowboys

Well I started on the whiskey pretty early this morning That’s alright, I was up all night But I passed out before the sun came up I really wanted to see one of those I know that’s no way for a man to behave With a mortgage due and a baby on the way But somehow I made it to where I’m at It’s been a living as a matter of fact

I get a bad attitude from being tired and running ‘round I never ask for anyone to say they like my sound I’ve never been a part of any musical scene I ain’t just talking Nashville, if you know what I mean They don’t write about me, in their magazines And I don’t ask for no reviews on the songs that I sing I never had a lot of friends and I’m alright by that But people keep on coming back Raising hell with the hippies and the cowboys They don’t care about no trends They don’t care about songs that sell Yeah, tomorrow I’ll be gone So tonight everybody just sing along Raising hell with the hippies and the cowboys I’ve been standing on the outside for all of my life But I like the view, I’m not gonna lie Yeah, the yuppies and the hipsters and the wannabe scenes That ain’t down home to me I like two dollar beers, I like three dollar wells At some old honky tonk bar that I know by the smell Some old drunk on a bar stool on a Merle Haggard tune That’s my kind of room Raising hell with the hippies and the cowboys They don’t care about no trends They don’t care about songs that sell Yeah, tomorrow I’ll be gone So tonight everybody just sing along Raising hell with the hippies and the cowboys Raising hell with the hippies and the cowboys They don’t care about no trends They don’t care about songs that sell Yeah, tomorrow I’ll be gone So tonight everybody just sing along Raising hell with the hippies and the cowboys And I’ll be raising hell with the hippies and the cowboys

After The Fire

I lost my way I lost track My heart and all my money The shirt off my back Then I found a place To lie and rest Clear the cloudy skies of my mind Clean up my mess

I’m not sure if this is prayer, or if it’s plea Beggin’ or hopin’ or my insanity You’re my first clean breath after the fire You’re that cool drink of water my soul requires Are you the sunshine Are you are the rain You light my darkness You wash my pain You’re I love you in a world of doubt Fill me with somethin’, I can’t go without I’m not sure if this is a prayer or if it’s plea Beggin’ or hopin’ or my insanity You’re my first clean breath after the fire You’re the cool drink of water my soul requires

Ain’t A Train

Livin’ on wings and wheels In my mind or made of steel If you ain’t running scared and rough Then you ain’t running fast enough for me

Behind the 8 ball ain’t always a bad place to be You can get out of anything with a dollar and a dream When your back against the wall your fixed But they can’t get you from your six, you know Maybe holdin’ on to something hurts you more than lettin’ go It hit ain’t hurtin’ maybe it ain’t workin’, it ain’t worth it no. Maybe that rain that brings the thunder, will help put out the flames Maybe the light at the end of the tunnel ain’t a train Maybe holdin’ on to something hurts you more than lettin’ go It it ain’t hurtin’ maybe it ain’t workin’, it ain’t worth it no. Maybe that rain that brings the thunder, will help put out the flames Maybe the light at the end of the tunnel ain’t a train Maybe the light at the end of the tunnel ain’t a train

Yesterday Again

Let’s do yesterday again Turn back the hands of time And maybe in the morning I’ll still be yours and you still mine Let’s not worry about tomorrow Tomorrow has to end We both woke up here together Let’s do yesterday again

Can you give me one good reason Both still lying here The fightins’ over now we’re even We’ve said our peace we’ve shed our tears If we’re holdin’ on to nothin’ Be nothing’ left to mend We both know that it’s not over Let’s do yesterday again Who’s to say how longs’ forever Or the time we’ll have to spend Let’s not waste another minute Let’s do yesterday again We both know that we’re still in it Let’s do yesterday again

Tell’em What It’s Like

Tell’em what it’s like Bec, because they think they want to know Beyond the lights, beyond the show, what it is Tell’em what it’s like Bec, to live with a man who’s never there To wonder if he even cares when he’s gone He’s always gone, here or there Tell’em what it’s like Bec, to be someone some love to hate Your pretty smile and all your grace, it wears you thin Tell’em what it’s like Bec, when I’m curled up on the floor And I can’t take it anymore and I’m a mess Tell’em what it’s like They can’t hear, they won’t believe What it’s really like to love a man like me But your actions they speak louder than some drunk girl in the crowd Who wants to talk about how you make it when I leave Tell’em what it’s like to love a man like me They can’t hear, they won’t believe What it’s really like to love a man like me But my actions will speak louder than some drunk girl in the crowd Who wants to talk about where I’m going when I leave Tell’em what it’s like to love a man like me You can be proud to love a man like me Tell’em what it’s like to love a man like me

Think Like You Think

The good book holds the reasons I believe the way I do And all I needed to know I was taught in Sunday school But I lived like those rules Were for everyone but me With selfish disregard For how it hurt my family

I staggered down the hall to our bed She helped steady me and said How can you think like you think Turn around and drink like you drink You can barely stand up when you kneel down to pray How can you tell our children to be strong And fight temptation in a world gone wrong How can you think like you think and drink like you drink Bless that girl that looks out for me With the faith and the love of a saint Give me the strength to make sure that she Never again has to say How can you think like you think and drink like you drink You can barely stand up when you kneel down to pray How can you tell our children to be strong And fight temptation in a world gone wrong How can you think like you think and drink like you drink How can you think like you think and drink like you drink

William and Wanda

William, where you been? I’ve been waiting on you since only God knows when William, come on in There’s so much to do, so glad to see you again

I haven’t been worried so much as I’ve been anxious I haven’t been sad, for the reason in the rhyme I haven’t been cryin’, that’s something that don’t happen I believed you’d make it here in your sweet time William, I’ve so much to say I started us a garden when I got here that June day William, c’mon this way Meet our little boy that died on his birthday We haven’t been worried so much as we’ve been anxious We haven’t been sad, for the reason in the rhyme We haven’t been cryin’, that’s something that don’t happen I told em’ you’d be up here some sweet time Wanda, quit pickin’ at me I’ve been running late since 1953 Wanda, slow down just be Hold my hand while I rock this boy to sleep I haven’t been worried so much as I’ve been anxious I’ve been sad but there’s redrawn in the rhyme I’ve done a lot of crying, that’s something just happens I hoped I’d make it up here some sweet time

One Good Decision

I’ve got one good decision to make tonight And I’ll have every chance to keep it right I’ve got a good woman at home So I’ll be leaving here alone Well I’ve got one good decision to make tonight

I can smoke and I can drink Till I can hardly speak or think I can stumble drunk my way across the floor I can dance and act a fool upon that bar or on that stool Choose to do damn near anything this side of those swinging doors But I’ve got one good decision to make tonight And I’ll have every chance to keep it right I’ve got a good woman at home So I’ll be leaving here alone Well I’ve got one good decision to make tonight You can try to catch my eye Wonder if I’m so inclined To allow my better judgment to go astray But now wonderings all you’ll do Cause I’ve got way too much to lose One night of so called heaven Ain’t worth the hell I’d pay But I’ve got one good decision to make tonight And I’ll have every chance to keep it right I’ve got a good woman at home So I’ll be leaving here alone Well I’ve got one good decision to make tonight

Dreamed With One

So run along with me We can save the world Playing make believe Starts with a boy and a girl

Lay me down to rest tonight Hold me close I’ll hold you tight Close your eyes, we’ll fall in deep Tonight I’ll meet you in our dream Tonight I’ll meet you in our dream So run along with me We can change the world Show what love can be Just this boy and his girl Lay me down to rest tonight Hold me close, I’ll hold you tight Close your eyes, we’ll fall in deep Tonight I’ll meet you in our dream Tonight I’ll meet you in our dream Tonight I’ll meet you in our dream When all our days are done And our time has come Know I’ve only dreamed I’ve only dreamed with one

Someone To You

I used to dream of fame and fortune I used to wanna be a star It was the greatest aspiration In my naïve stubborn heart But with the years I have grown wiser Learned without love there’s no use Now I’d rather be a no one If I ain’t someone to you

I used to dream of fame and fortune I used to wanna be a star It was the greatest aspiration In my naïve stubborn heart But with the years I have grown wiser Learned without love there ain’t no use Now I’d rather be a no one If I ain’t someone to you I have traded many memories I’ve gambled with my time Along a jealous lonesome highway All for a vision in my mind I’ve lost friends and I’ve burned bridges I’ve gone broke from payin’ dues Now I’d rather be a no one If I ain’t someone to you Neon lights and crowded dancehalls Make you wanna to go too far Made my way out of the honkytonks Just to learn they’re all bars So if one day I finally make it If this foolish dream comes true Just know I’d rather be a no one If I ain’t someone to you Neon lights and crowded dancehalls Make you wanna to go too far Made my way out of the honkytonks Just to learn they’re all bars So if one day I finally make it If this foolish dream comes true Just know I’d rather be a no one If I ain’t someone to you I’d be better off a no one If I ain’t someone to you

Tonedeaf Boogie

From the mornin’ Through the day And on through the night Like the stinging Or the burning of a slowly turning knife I ache now just to hold you Make you feel my love If only the wanting was enough

I may never live this feeling down That’s the one sure thing I’ve found Better lost in love Than never tried at all I have found, in this life There’s are two ways can fall I wish I could start it over Wishing don’t mean much If only the wanting was enough I may never let this feeling down That’s the one sure thing I’ve found I wish I could start over Wishing don’t mean much If only the wanting was enough I may never live this feeling down That’s the one sure thing I’ve found I may never live this feeling down I can’t want you anymore

Same Kind Of Crazy As Me

I don’t go to church on Sunday I don’t go to work on Monday I sleep until I wake up Whiskey in my coffee cup And I take what the good Lord gave That’s the shovel that digs my grave I never really had a plan But everybody knows where I stand And, in all my friends I see The same kind of crazy as me

There’s more colors than red and blue To paint the elephant in the room We piss and moan about that and this Always another ass to kiss But I believe that freedom rings I believe in the songs we sing I have a funny way you see Of what the world might someday be Why can’t they just let it be The same kind of crazy as me There ain’t a single thing we own We’ll take with us when we’re gone So I’ll just walk the earth a while Lend a hand and leave a smile And who knows how the whole thing ends You can’t tell me where or when So I’ll just pray that when I’m done I meet the Father and the Son, and If I’m right they’ll be The same kind of crazy as me There ain’t a single thing we own We’ll take with us when we’re gone So I’ll just walk the earth a while Lend a hand and leave a smile And who knows how the whole thing ends You can’t tell me where or when So I’ll just pray that when I’m done I meet the Father and the Son, and If I’m right they’ll be The same kind of crazy as me Same kind of crazy as me Same kind of crazy as me Same kind of crazy as me

Never Alone Always Lonely

Backside of thirty came fast, but what’s more I can’t remember younger days like before and it’s a shame I’ve done more runnin’ than most any age Whole lot of prayin’ on the backside of a stage, scared to death Wondering what’s next

And I take the long way around every time As fast as I can through the comfort of night and it’s a fight People who love me they suffer the most See me on TV and all they see’s a ghost of someone they knew They’re tellin’ the truth Never alone always lonely Easy to find, seldom seen Never alone always lonely On a fast train Through a slow moving dream Never alone always lonely Easy to find seldom seen Never alone always lonely On a fast train Through a slow moving dream Never alone always lonely Easy to find seldom seen On a fast train Through a slow moving dream

I’ve never been the kind to just turn and run Never lost a battle with a loaded gun Never been confused about who I am Or what I think it takes for me to be a man

But lately it’s been hell just trying to get by Livin’ like I’m livin’ on a borrowed dime Watchin’ my friends as they’re all having fun Whiskey won’t you help me make it through this one Cause I don’t mind I’ll sit here and keep on grinnin’, drowned my head and keep on livin’, I don’t mind Guess I’ll drink another bottle and drown another sorrow I don’t mind I can’t wait another minute, won’t you help me to forget it again Well tonight’s been slower than it’s ever been Staring at the clock at closing time again The bartender tells me it’s time to go Got a bottle of the venom waiting back at home Come tomorrow I’ll probably buy some more Black Label Even Williams from the liquor store Back to the bar until my drinkins done Whiskey won’t you help me make it through this one Cause I don’t mind I’ll sit here and keep on grinnin’, drowned my head and keep on livin’, I don’t mind Guess I’ll drink another bottle and drown another sorrow I don’t mind I can’t wait another minute, won’t you help me to forget it again Cause I don’t mind I’ll sit here and keep on grinnin’, drowned my head and keep on livin’, I don’t mind Guess I’ll drink another bottle and drown another sorrow I don’t mind I can’t wait another minute, won’t you help me to forget it again

Where Even Angels Fear To Fly

Bastrop you don’t grow up, you just get raised On Hellfire and Brimstone and Amazing Grace The smell of stills and paper mills, you never quite escape But I got away

I swore that I’d be done by 21 Staring down the wrong end of a gun I’ve drank myself ungrateful and I found myself unwise But I’m still alive I’m still alive And I have learned the hard way lessons And I have made my own mistakes I’ve drove headlong down some dead end roads, no honest man should take But I’ve never been afraid to spread broken wings in skies Where even angels fear to fly Where even angels fear to fly So damn sure of what I could not know Knew too damn well of what wasn’t really so I don’t conjure memories now, it’s best I just forget So I’ve laid to rest My regrets I learned the hard way, the lessons I have made my own mistakes Drove headlong down some dead ends, no honest man should take But I’ve never been afraid to spread broken wings in skies Where angels fear to fly And I have learned the hard way lessons And I have made my own mistakes I’ve drove headlong down some dead end roads, no honest man should take But I’ve never been afraid to spread broken wings in skies Where even angels fear to fly Where even angels fear to fly

Which One I Feed

I am the river that flows through my veins I am the black crow, I’m wings of change I am the rock that the rain couldn’t conquer I’m above, I’m below, I am hell and high water

I’ve been the song carried in on the breeze I’ve wept with willows and I’ve fell with the leaves I am the badlands and the silence it holds A warrior who walks but is never alone There’s a black and a white wolf in me And I live and I die By which one I feed It’s a war old as time, this fighting inside And I live and I die, By which one I feed I am the hunted and I am the hunter I am the feast and the famine, the hunger I am the eagle screaming for peace While the beasts on the inside sharpen their teeth There’s a black and a white wolf in me And I live and I die By which one I feed It’s a war old as time, this fighting inside And I live and I die, By which one I feed There’s a black and a white wolf in me And I live and I die By which one I feed It’s a war old as time, this fighting inside And I live and I die, By which one I feed Which one I feed I am the river that flows through my veins I am the black crow, I’m wings of change

A Bite Of Something Sweet

I need a bite of something sweet I need a day like they used to be Need to see all my old friends, so we can start again I need a bite of something sweet

I need a drink Lord, from that cup I need something to fill me up When the cards have all been shown It’s time that I go home I need a drink Lord, from that cup I need to lie down and rest for a while I need a sunny day, but clouds are more my style My soul hungers for more than I can eat Give me a new day and a bite of something sweet I need to lie down and rest for a while I need a sunny day, but clouds are more my style My soul hungers for more than I can eat Give me a new day and a bite of something sweet Give me a new day and a bite of something sweet

Mama, this highways gonna kill me And mama, I think my rose is wilting The kids and her alone while I’m so far from home I feel so guilty Mama, this highways gonna kill me

I hope the road that takes me there will always bring me back But I guess whatever will be, will be Mama this highways gonna kill me Woman, I wish I couldn’t hurt you And woman, It’s clear I don’t deserve you I know it seems I only need you when I ain’t got nowhere else to turn too So woman, I wish I wouldn’t hurt you I’m sure there’s some relief in giving up and moving on And sometimes it seems way too much to work through Woman I never meant to hurt you Lord, I beg of you protect me Cause lately, swear the devil’s out to get me It ain’t a leap of faith to say he always prays upon the unsuspecting So Lord, I beg of you protect me I can’t walk with you if the devil got my hand I hope you have my back and direct me Jesus I beg of you protect me Jesus, don’t let’em get me

It Don’t Rain In California

She can’t do this, anymore She bought a ticket west and left me staring down the storm Now I’m sittin’ here, all alone In an empty house that used to be a happy home She said she needed sunshine She had enough of clouds I knew it wouldn’t take too long, for her to figure out.

It don’t rain in California You won’t see a single storm cloud in the sky It’s always clear, so there won’t be any tears Leave you standin’ in the downpour trying to hide It don’t rain in California, like it’s raining here tonight I can’t do this, anymore I hopped a plane and I found my way to the California shore Now we sittin’ here, all alone You knew that I was comin’, you sounded happy on the phone I knew you needed sunshine, It seems I brought the clouds The thunder and the lightning seem to follow me around It don’t rain in California You won’t see a single storm cloud in the sky It’s always clear, so there won’t be any tears Leave you standin’ in the downpour trying to hide It don’t rain in California, like it’s raining here tonight It don’t rain in California, like it’s raining here tonight

Wounded Mind

I feel their eyes upon me, as I walk across the room I can hear em’ all whispering my name So I tuck in my shoulders and hide the best I can It all happened so fast I can’t explain But if I had to

I’d tell em’ all I really ain’t that special And I’d cry and yell leave me the hell alone And I hate it that I have to try to be cool all the time I’m just a guy, with a wounded mind I put on my costume and I put on a show The only way a jester stays alive All they see is glitter and all they hear are rhymes If I could find a new way to survive I’d be glad to Tell em’ all I really ain’t that special And I’d cry and yell leave me the hell alone And I hate it that I have to try to be cool all the time I’m just a guy, with a wounded mind And I hate it that I have to try to be cool all the time I’m just a guy, with a wounded mind And I’d tell em’ all I really ain’t that special And I’d cry and yell leave me the hell alone And I hate it that I have to try to be cool all the time I’m just a guy, with a wounded mind

Ramble, when this world gives you more than you can handle You get on those two wheels and you fly to outer space Like your in a one man race Never thinking about tomorrow, you beg, steal, you borrow

And you gamble, you gamble with your love like you don’t need it And when it’s said and done you’ll be alone out on the road Shaking off the cold No one to keep you warm, I guess you were born to ramble Freedom, you say all you ever wanted was your freedom But is it worth the cost of never calling one place home Always going, going, gone Nowhere to rest your bones, but you keep on believing
Believing in some kind of magic potion The one that makes you feel like you ain’t never gonna die The one that makes you cry Then leaves you in that haze, I guess you will always ramble Ramble, when this world gives you more than you can handle You get on those two wheels and go back to outer space Win that one man race Don’t worry bout tomorrow, out run your sorrows and ramble

The Raven And The Dove

I have prayed for wisdom, now I pray for peace It seems the more I know now, the less that I can sleep Stay imprisoned in my conscience, trying to figure what it means To be caught between a nightmare and the sweetest of dreams

Some days a raven, some days a dove Some days the dark cloud hanging round Others from the light above I’m scuffed by the devil, but I’m washed up in the blood Some days a raven, some days a dove You may question how I’m living, it might scare you half to death I’ve been forgive for my sinning, Lord knows I ain’t through sinning yet I get my singing from my mama, I get the fight from my old man I don’t always know where I’m going, but I know exactly what I am Some days a raven, some days a dove Some days the dark cloud hanging round Others from the light above I’m scuffed by the devil, but I’m washed up in the blood Some days a raven, some days a dove Some days a raven, some days a dove Some days the dark cloud hanging round Others from the light above I’m scuffed by the devil, but I’m washed up in the blood Some days a raven, some days a dove Some days a raven, some days a dove

Desert Wind

The city lights Ain’t treatin’ me right On this side of the wall I’m thinkin’ it’s time To turn on a dime For the Sierra Madre call I caught wind From a friend of a friend Of mighty wealth untold If the stories are true Nothin’ left to do But head down to Mexico

Desert wind Blowin’ me away again Now you’re my only friend I’ve got left to call Bought a two-bit mule From a horse-theivin’ fool To cross the Rio Grande alone I had to steer clear But I had not a fear Where the federale roamed Once I was through I knew what to do Had to send that old mule home I’m now on the trail That lead most to hell After Pancho Villa’s gold Desert wind Blowin’ me away again Now you’re my only friend I’ve got left to call Desert wind Blowin’ me away again Now you’re my only friend I’ve got left to call Followed the words That I’d been told Amongst the hillside shadows cold When I talked to him I caught a chill For the cavern it did hold The answers to questions that I never had With riches I could hold But truth of a man ain’t built with hands or Pancho Villa’s gold It’s that desert wind Blowin’ me home again Now you’re the only friend That I’ll ever call It’s that desert wind Blowin’ me home again Now you’re the only friend I’ll ever call

From the 7th floor window sometimes I swear I see it all From which way the wind blows to how we’re all bound to fall Doesn’t make much sense, the crazy things I do Under the influence of the pain that I’ve been through To get to you

It’s what I do To get to you I shook hands with deception when I saw through their empty eyes I broke bread with the burdens of everything that I despise Dug my own graves and I’ve thrown caution to the wind Become a slave to the wicked ways of men To get to you It’s what I do To get to you It’s what I do To get to you I wish I hadn’t waged the wars on the weakness of my fears But it was worth the wait just to be standin’ here Singin’ to the heavens as they fill up my mind Standin’ on the 7th floor of everything I left behind To get to you It’s what I do To get to you It’s what I do To get to you It’s what I do To get to you It’s what I do To get to you It’s what I do To get to you It’s what I do To get to you From the 7th floor window sometimes I swear I see it all From which way the wind blows to how we’re all bound to fall

Who’s this stranger in the mirror The one that’s lookin’ back at me? He ain’t familiar, I don’t know this guy Who in the world could it be? It ain’t me, there ain’t no way And the stranger, gettin’ stranger everyday

The guy I’m lookin’ for, he’s a young man He ain’t scarred-up and gettin’ old He’s a good kid from the country Your eyes are big-city-cold It ain’t me, there ain’t no way And the stranger, gettin’ stranger everyday Maybe I’m goin’ crazy Could be losin’ my mind Lookin’ for someone familiar That I knew one time The stranger, hear me talkin’ Listen up to what I have to say Waitin’ for an answer… silence And the stranger, is gettin’ stranger every day Maybe I’m goin’ crazy Could be losin’ my mind Lookin’ for someone familiar That I knew one time Who’s this stranger in the mirror

Burning the candle at both ends leaves no time to think To kill one flame It’s to slow the burn Hittin’ it hard every night when the sun goes down my girl You know I’m always around I’m in some other town

I can’t say where I’ll be, come this time next week I know I won’t be here I know I won’t be home I’ve lost so much of myself, I wonder now Am I really what, all these people see I’ve got no time to think, the time that I’ve let go I’ve got no time to think, the time you’ve spent alone I’ve got no time to think of the years I know all the times with you how they come and go Got no time to think, the time that I’ve let go Ten years gone and I’m on my way to a million miles You know they don’t come free You know they roll by slow I’d be lyin’ if I said that I did not love my work You know I love you too Now it’s time to go I’ve got no time to think, the time that I’ve let go I’ve got no time to think, the time you’ve spent alone I’ve got no time to think of the years I know all the times with you how they come and go Got no time to think, the time that I’ve let go I’ve got no time to think, the time that I’ve let go I’ve got no time to think, the time you’ve spent alone I’ve got no time to think of the years I know all the times with you how they come and go Got no time to think, the time that I’ve let go

Wake Up Becki

Wake up Becki I’ve got something to say Listen to me Let’s try this one more day I know it’s late now But you know I just can’t sleep Wake up Becki Won’t you talk with me

Wake up Becki Oh now listen to me please Understand now I’m down on my knees You gotta believe me When I say my love is true Wake up Becki All I want is you I need to hear your voice, you know I’m all alone And this is what I’d say to you, if you’d pick up that phone You must be fast asleep not thinking about me or you’re already gone Wake up Becki Becki I’m almost home Wake up Becki Oh I know it’s been too long Since I’ve held you And I know you’ve been strong Don’t you worry I may be gone for a week or two Wake up Becki I’m coming home to you I need to hear your voice, you know I’m all alone And this is what I’d say to you, if you’d pick up that phone You must be fast asleep not thinking about me or you’re already gone Wake up Becki Becki I’m almost home

If there’s time to pray before I die, I pray dear Lord you know that I was a righteous man that somehow lost his way Face me down when I shall pass so the world can kiss my ass and Hell can’t come and get me from behind I’ve danced in the flames and I’ve been burned I’ve walked on the harder side of life, I’ve takin’ all the wrong turns I’ve been around I’ve been down And I’ve been wasted I fight with myself sometimes I lose I got me an angel on my shoulder, but I’ve got the devil too, I get down I get around and I get wasted Twenty-seven years along I’ve tried to make them right all wrong and I’ve nearly died a few times on my way Well I’ve seen the face of God first hand and I’ve danced with the devil man, I’ve needed help and grab for both of their hands I’ve danced in the flames and I’ve been burned I’ve walked on the harder side of life, I’ve takin’ all the wrong turns I’ve been around I’ve been down And I’ve been wasted I fight with myself, sometimes I lose I got me an angel on my shoulder, but I’ve got the devil too, I get down I get around and I get wasted I fight with myself Sometimes I lose I got me an angel on my shoulder, but I’ve got the devil too I get down I get around and I get wasted I don’t run from guilt you see my conscience lets me know at least a thousand times or better every day

65 Days in LA

All I did was drink all day in that hell they call L.A. A southern born man wants a gun in his hand When he sees how they run that place Never say I’m better than anyone Cause Lord knows that I’m not But that California summer wasn’t that hot

We went out there searchin’ for something Instead we all got lost We were headin’ out west and the plans were goin’ south Never counted no cost By the time I hit Arizona I was on my way to see 65 days in L.A. is enough for me And I would drink ’till the sun came up And I was tryin’ to find myself But it’s hard to find yourself in a state like that I was born a runnin’ man and anywhere I’m free But 65 days in L.A. is enough for me Been a few good folks out there, any and everywhere We were runnin’ down the same things, all about insane Thinkin’ we’d find them out there Steppin’ over bums on the sidewalk To get back to my front door And by the middle of August, couldn’t take any more So I loaded up what little I had left And I bought two packs of smokes I was haulin’ back to my girl, all back to my own I was born a runnin’ man and anywhere I’m free But 65 days in L.A. is enough for me 65 days anywhere is too much for me Too much for me

Last Call for the Blues

You’re good for nothing It’s what they always say I can’t say no different look at me today Always in and out of trouble An enemy of the state Why can’t I get my act together Dollar short, a day late

And they say why you don’t quit drinkin’ You’re always acting like a clown We all see your ships been sinkin’ Just slowly goin’ down You’ve been runnin’ for so long You ain’t got no time to lose You better right in all your wrongs Last call for the blues Yeah the first step, it’s admitting Then it’s one day at a time Don’t you dare deny it You’re way past your prime You better start to look ahead What’s done is dead and gone There ain’t no wisdom in that whiskey There’s only sadness in your song And they say why you don’t quit drinkin’ You’re always acting like a clown We all see your ships been sinkin’ Just slowly goin’ down You’ve been runnin’ for so long You ain’t got no time to lose You better right in all your wrongs Last call for the blues And they say why you don’t quit drinkin’ You’re always acting like a clown We all see your ships been sinkin’ Just slowly goin’ down You’ve been runnin’ for so long You ain’t got no time to lose You better right in all your wrongs Last call for the blues You better right in all your wrongs Last call for the blues

Curse the Sky

Sometimes in the summer, it’ll lightnin’, it’ll thunder But the rain don’t seem to come it rolls on by Thunder sounds like laughter, as the lightning hits the pasture And you know that land has been dry for some time

And it burns and it burns, oh it burns The river it stopped flowin’ back through town some time ago And the train tracks rest below a bed of weeds The truck stop shut its door on the day that oil hit a hundred and four dollars a barrel Ya’ll then the grocery store came next and then the bank And it burns oh it burns, it burns Oh it burns, yeah it burns, oh it burns You do the things you know to just to make it day by day You can hear the kids a cryin’, but there’s just no time to play. You work the way you know how just the way you’ve always done and you’d like to curse the skies that bring no rain and block the sun And it burns Sometimes when it’s rainin’ and there seems there ain’t no stoppin’ aand a storm surge rushes past and all goes down That river roars with laughter as it strips away the pasture land the home you built And work for your own hands And it rains, oh it rains, yeah it rains And it rains, oh it rains, yeah it rains You do the things you know to just to make it by the day You can hear the kids a cryin’ but there’s just no time to play you work the way you know how just the way you’ve always done and you’d like to curse the skies that bring the rain and block the sun and it rains And it rains Sometimes in the summer it’ll lightnin’, it’ll thunder But the rain don’t seem to come it rolls on by

Loveletters and Cigarettes

They don’t want you none Virginia Why don’t you just go on home I’m not being fair Virginia I’d rather see you all alone This old town’s is the way you left it And sleep is good when you can get it

Loveletters and cigarettes It’s been three years and I can’t forget And wrap this chain around my neck for good I memorized every word you wrote And each night they go up in smoke And I’m gonna die or I’m gonna choke it’s true I’m still not done with you Oh no, I’m still not done with you The big screen waits for you Virginia It’s where I wanted you to be When it came to being with you This place just wouldn’t let go of me Every road and every stop light I see your face on a good night Loveletters and cigarettes It’s been three years and I can’t forget And wrap this chain around my neck for good I memorized every word you wrote And each night they go up in smoke And I’m gonna die or I’m gonna choke it’s true I’m still not done with you Oh no, I’m still not done with you Every road and every stop light I see your face on a good night Loveletters and cigarettes It’s been three years and I can’t forget And wrap this chain around my neck for good I memorized every word you wrote And each night they go up in smoke And I’m gonna die or I’m gonna choke it’s true I’m still not done with you Oh no, I’m still not done with you

Time is gold and it only goes by in waves of strangers Along the way sometimes strangers make your friends Well I’m gettin’ old and my friends don’t come around like they used to We’ve stopped actin’ like we’ve got somethin’ to prove

My old friend Jake, yeah man, we made some noise in those barrooms Who’d have thought he’d be the first one with a son And I like to think that guy we all call McKinney He was there at my worst and Lord knows he’s helped me on It’s been a few years since I, seen that Matthews boy He’s still livin’ down in Houston, still never callin’ back when I phone Every now and then I’ll stop and I’ll have a few with Vinny You know we laugh about the old times, at least those we recall It’s always, c’est la vi, Try not, to miss the forest for the trees And now we’re, what we did not think we’d be A little bit older, a little less wise You get a little older and a lot less wise Time is gold and it only goes by in waves of strangers

Hippies and Cowboys Alt Take

Somewhere in the middle alt take, whiskey bent and hell bound unreleased.

I’ve got a good woman at home Who thinks I do no wrong But sometimes, Lord, she just ain’t always around And you know that’s when I fall Now I can’t help myself at all And I’ll get whiskey bent and hell bound

Play me some songs about a ramblin’ man Put a cold one in my hand ‘Cause you know I love to hear those guitar sounds Don’t you play, I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry ‘Cause I’ll get all balled up inside And I’ll get whiskey bent and hell bound Sure enough about closin’ time About stoned out of my mind And I end up with some honky tonk special I found Just as sure as the mornin sun comes Thinking of my sweet girl at home And I’ll get whiskey bent and hell bound Play me the songs about ramblin’ man Put old Jim Beam in my hand ‘Cause you know I still love to get drunk And hear country sounds But don’t you play, Your Cheatin’ Heart ‘Cause that’ll tear me all apart I’ll get whiskey bent and hell bound Yeah, old Hank’s songs Always make me feel low down

I heard good to see, those lights were sure bright tonight That bittersweet voice took me back, another time She said, after all this while, it’s good to see you doin’ fine Well that’s a funny thing to hear, after the last time I recall the choice you made, the words you chose back then It killed me for a long, long time, were we ever friends I said, you came here to see, if time had rearranged The same old game, I’m still the same

Same old bar, same guitars, same old stars That light my day It’s gettin’ better to not feel ruined But you know I do anyway I really don’t know what you’re doing here What you want, or why you came It’s gettin’ late now and I gotta go Since you asked, I’m still the same I’m still the same I really don’t know what you’re doing here Or what you want Or why you came It’s gettin’ late now and I gotta go But since you asked I’m still the same I’m still the same I’m still the same

Give All You Can

The dark places I go Ain’t just on the road ‘Tween the lines, ‘tween the years it’s the same Never did understand As a much younger man Why I felt such a need to go

But I learned that it’s all in my head I can’t stop whatever’s turnin’, with that being said I got a bad tortured soul For reasons I don’t know Guess for some, it’s just meant to be But I remember Mathew 5 And I’m thankful to be alive And I know those people on that mountain were a lot like me I’ve been down and not had a dollar to my name But there’s angels there that got me through, and I can do the same When you give all you can When you give all you can When you give all you can, give some more Till you spend all your time Till you spend your last dime Tell me brother, what are you livin for What are you livin for I’ve been down and not had a dollar to my name But there’s angels there that got me through Hell, I can do the same When you give all you can When you give all you can When you give all you can, give some more Till you spend all your time Till you spend your last dime Tell me brother, what are you livin for What are you livin for What are you livin for What are you livin for What are you livin for What are you livin for? Give all you can What are you livin for? What are you livin for? Give all you can What are you livin for? What are you livin for? What are you livin for?

She’s All Mine

Doors open when she smiles She moves mountains with her mind She’s all mine She’s all mine

She’s that Fort Worth Texas girl She’s every girl in the world She’s all mine She’s all mine The Devil tells me lies most every night But I don’t wander through the darkness She’s my light She’s an angel with no disguise Lord knows I’ve made her cry But she’s still mine She’s all mine If it can be done son, she can She makes me a better man She’s all mine She’s all mine The Devil tells me lies most every night But I don’t wander through the darkness She’s my light She might tell you it’s not that hard, that’s her lie If there’s one thing to hold against her, it is I The Devil tells me lies, most every night I don’t wander through the darkness She’s my light She might tell you it’s not that hard, that’s her lie If there’s one thing to hold against her, it is I Doors open when she smiles She moves mountains with her might

The Way I Am

Wish I was down, on some blue bayou With a bamboo cane, stuck in the sand But the road I’m on, it don’t seem to go there So I’ll just dream and keep on bein’ the way I am

Wish I enjoyed, what makes my living Did what I do, with a willin’ hand Some would run, no but that ain’t like me So I’ll just dream and keep on bein’ the way I am The way I am, don’t fit my shackles The way I am, reality I can almost see, that bobber dancin’ So I’ll just dream and keep on bein’ the way I am The way I am, don’t fit my shackles The way I am, reality I can almost see that bobber dancin’ So I’ll just dream and keep on bein’ the way I am So I’ll just dream and keep on bein’ the way I am

Chase That Song

Well I’m an eighteen wheeler with the throttle pinned down And a brake line cut just a-screamin’ through your town Well I’m a runaway ghost train with no way left to stop Well I’m a nightmare that comes from your California dreamin’ With your bloodshot eyes thinkin’ nothin’s what it’s seemin’ I’m a Bradbury story, spreadin’ like a fire from hell No I never met a lesson I didn’t learn well

I get wound up and found up in places you’ll never see I was born to be a God-fearin’ song-singin’, good-timin’ Son of a son of an SOB I never set out to hurt anybody, you see I just set out to chase that song that’s chasin’ me Well I’m a late night thunder tryin’ to raise the dead Well I’m a pound and the haze in your whiskey trippin’ head Well I’m the cough in your first smoke, go on and load that gun I’m a thirteen-squared, I’m a 13 twice Just a black cat walkin’ on thin black ice I’m a Jinks Lord, I can’t help it I was born half bad Some times I can’t remember they’re the best I’ve had I get wound up and found up in places you’ll never see I was born to be a God-fearin’ song-singin’, good-timin’ Son of a son of an SOB I never set out to hurt anybody, you see I just set out to chase that song that’s chasin’ me I get wound up and found up in places you’ll never see I was born to be a God-fearin’ song-singin’, good-timin’ Son of a son of an SOB I never set out to hurt anybody, you see I just set out to chase that song now it’s chasin’ me I set out to chase that song Out to chase that song I set out to chase that song now it’s chasin’ me

I can’t think of one damn thing to say Stuck where I’m going Stuck in a lot of ways

Tell me it still matters In a world in vain Pissing in the wind Screaming about the same old things Time stands still every now and then, then it’s gone Wondering what you did Wondering what you did all wrong Hindsight’s 20/20 when you’re, lookin’ back Looking out ahead All I see is black The train jumped track some time ago You can’t root that heavy load It’s all downhill from now And sure we paid the toll Train jumped track some time ago The train jumped track some time ago You can’t root that heavy load It’s all downhill from now And sure we paid the toll Train jumped track some time ago I heard the voice of the fourth beast say Come and see And I looked and behold a pale horse And his name that sat on him was death And hell followed with him The train jumped track some time ago You can’t root that heavy load It’s all downhill from now And sure we paid the toll Train jumped track some time ago It’s all downhill from now Forever paying that toll The train jumped track some time ago

When the canvas is no longer blank And the colors have all turned grey When the desert that you’re in gets too cold for you to stay When it’s hard to tell the night from the day

When your hands have lost the love for the trade And the reasons for the work, just ain’t the same When you put down the money, is the blood worth all the pain When you can’t see the sunshine for the rain Livin’ ain’t a promise Livin’ ain’t a right And no one here is gettin’ out alive So pick up all your pieces Cast the doubt away Rediscover, the color in the grey Rediscover, all the color, in the grey Livin’ ain’t a promise Livin’ ain’t a right No one here is gettin’ out alive So pick up all your pieces Cast the doubt away Rediscover, the color in the grey Rediscover, all the color, in the grey

Church at Gaylor Creek

My favorite memories, are some of my first Like a Sunday night meetin’ at an old country church Sometimes my grandparents would come and take me To an old country church house, on Gaylor Creek

We all knew our neighbors, everyone there was friends And the preacher worked the timber, like all other men We were baptized by water, we were washed in the blood I don’t remember much money, but recall lots of love That church was a long time ago I’m talkin’ distance and years I’m not for certain that I could even get there from here But on nights when I’m sober and not blinded, by all that I see My mind washes up, at that church, on Gaylor Creek So many bar rooms, so many strangers Women, whiskey, so many dangers That old honky tonk highway, that’s a wild horse you rope Son, I’ve seen enough neon, to circle the globe That church was a long time ago I’m talkin’ distance and years I’m not for certain that I could even get there from here But on nights when I’m sober and not blinded, by all that I see My mind washes up, at that church, on Gaylor Creek My mind washes up, at that church, on Gaylor Creek

Hand Me Down

Well hand me down, hand me down Come on, come on, hand me down Hand me down, hand me down Come on, come on, hand me down

Hand me down my evenin’ news Hand me down your point of view Hand me down those rich man’s wars Hand me down what it’s all for Hand me down your politicians Handed down by hypocrites Hand me down false laws of man Hand me down your latest brand Well hand me down, hand me down Come on, come on, hand me down Hand me down, hand me down Come on, come on, hand me down The good times came, the good times gone Hand me down what went wrong Hand me down for I’m ashamed Truth brings life and life brings slain Well hand me down, hand me down Come on, come on, hand me down Hand me down, hand me down Come on, come on, hand me down Hand me down my weekly tithe Hand me down your thoughts on life Hand me down that book to read That’s the handout that I need Well hand me down, hand me down Come on, come on, hand me down Hand me down, hand me down Come on, come on, hand me down The good times came, good times gone Hand me down what went wrong Hand me down for I’m ashamed Truth brings life and life brings slain

Big Iron Wheels

Big iron wheels keep on rollin’ Big iron wheels turnin’ ‘round From my home I am leavin’ Headed for another town I left a girl back in the country For the city and the pay Reachin’ out for fame and fortune But I’ll go back again some day

Big iron wheels keep on rollin’ Big iron wheels turnin’ ‘round From my home I am leavin’ Headed for another town Feel the rhythm and the motion Hear the rumble, hear the roar Headed for some destination That I’ve never seen before Cold iron slappin’ on the steel rails The sky outside is cold and pale The snow is heavy comin’ down now As the mountain winds away Big iron wheels keep on rollin’ big iron wheels turnin’ ‘round To the sunshine I’m returning To kiss the girl in my hometown To kiss the girl in my hometown To kiss the girl from my hometown

My old friend I’ll see you again another day We can talk and laugh and drink the night away Like we did, my old friend

When we were kids No, you did not have a home so you hung around And stay up all night long and we’d pretend That we were dead, when we were kids You grew up harder than I did You found the nightlife, you drug us both in And we raised cane like rasin’ cane was goin’ out ‘Cause we never thought much about gettin’ old anyway Now I’m findin’ that I wish I could go back once again My old friend No, you never let me down as years went by You went on your way and I went mine Like the wind, my old friend You grew old faster than I did You know that nightlife will do you in And you raised cane until the cane was all burned out Now I hope for both our sakes that I grow old And I’m still findin’ that I wish I could go back once again My old friend I’ll see you again another day We can talk and laugh and bow our heads and pray Like we did, my old friend My old friend My old friend My old friend

They ask black sheep of a black sheep’s son Have you any wool, and I say no sir I gave it all away I’m a black sheep of a black sheep And I’ve been one many times But that don’t make me anybody’s fool I gave most to Christ Jesus for saving my soul For that bet with the devil who lives down below There’s been some for my mother, my father My sister, my brothers, my son, my daughter, my lover There’s been some for that homeless man That I watched die in some ally With a slit wrist I went home to cry There’s been some for my buddies fightin’ In some rich man’s war Yeah they gave all they could We don’t sing no more

I stand naked and cold as the crowd gathers ‘round I stand naked and cold as the crowd gathers ‘round I stand naked and cold as the crowd gathers ‘round They ask black sheep of a black sheep’s son Where have you been We’ve been worried, we’ve been in need I’ve been hidin’ on the pathways Biding my time amongst the wolves hungry to feed Well I give what I can nature of man Just needs war so what can I say Yeah I’ll die someday stripped Havin’ given all the gifts I’ve received That is my pain I stand naked and cold as the crowd gathers ‘round I stand naked and cold as the crowd gathers ‘round I stand naked and cold as the crowd gathers ‘round Black sheep of a black sheep’s son Have you any wool, and I say yeah I saved some for you

Locked him up back in ’69 On clear Kentucky shine Then again in ’87, cornbread, smoke fed The Marion county line It is time, he did his time

Thirteen of twenty served and that far outweighed his crime He came back a wiser man he came back to do what he’d do He’d do it every time It is time, He did his time When they came bustin’ in last year
Like a smoke ring he’s up and gone But he wouldn’t have to go too far When the folks ’round here They don’t trust no law, no way Hey run, Johnny, run Hey run, Johnny, run Hey now run now, run, Johnny run A man’s worries’ all he’s got A man’s law don’t mean a damn To the down home southern folk Who live by the law of the land, not Uncle Sam It’s their land, it’s our land No one knows who you’re talkin’ ‘bout No one’s seen, they’ve all gone blind Knowin’ he’ll be back some day To do what he’d do, what he’d do He’d do it every time, it is time No more time And they’re still chasin’ down old ghosts And they’re still askin’ on deaf ears But he wouldn’t have to go too far When the folks ’round here They don’t trust no law, no way Hey run, Johnny, run Hey run, Johnny run Hey now run now, run, Johnny run Never mind no song, keep your head down, boy
Run, Johnny run You can rest at my place when the day is done Hey now, run Johnny, run now run, Johnny run Hey now, run now, run Johnny run Never mind no song, keep your head down, boy Run, Johnny run You can rest at my place when the day is done

Little Train

Little train, little train just a rollin’ down the track Little train, little train ain’t even lookin’ back Little train, little train you’re carryin’ my heart away Little train, I’m singin’ you a mournful song With my hands in the air till the black smoke’s gone Little train I won’t be seein’ you too soon

I hear you’re headed out west, my, the weather’s been bad Watch the floods in the canyon, lift the mud from the track Little train don’t you know it’s dangerous out there Tell your shotgun rider there’s a beef on the loose But an extra gun on the old caboose Little train make sure my baby’s safe and sound Roll on, little engine, roll on down the line You’re carryin’ my baby away And I’ll cry to the four winds until your safe return When you bring back my baby to stay Won’t you make her stay? When her business is done won’t you call her on back Won’t you let a long whistle out your old smokestack Little train, I’m afraid that city’s caught her eye Little train, little train don’t you go too fast Don’t you go too slow just keep her on track Little train won’t you flash your headlamps when you’re near Roll on, little engine, roll on back down the line You’re carryin’ my baby away I cried out to the four winds upon your safe return When you bring back my baby to stay No never take her away Little train, little train just a rollin’ down the track Little train, little train ain’t even lookin’ back Little train, little train you’re carryin’ my heart away Little train, I’m singin’ you a mournful song With my hands in the air till the black smoke’s gone Little train I won’t be seein’ you too soon

A Memory and a Dream

It’s a long, hard, and a windin’ road to where I am right now
A lot of days I wish I could change, but I can’t figure how
‘Cause all them places I’ve been, the things that I’ve seen
I’d be better off dead than goin’ there again
And I’ve been caught somewhere in between
 A memory and a dream

Well, I’ve been screamin’ at the world
Since the time that I could talk
Well, I’ve been runnin’ into walls
Since the day that I could walk
‘Cause all them bottles I’ve drank, never mind the smoke
Man, the years are gangin’ up on me, but I’m a holdin’ onto hope
And I’m still caught somewhere in between
A memory and a dream

Yeah, ten years gone, I’ve been around the world
And somehow, I always wind up here
It must be this company I keep, oh that takes me back
And gets me on my feet
Yeah, my life is still exactly what it seems
A memory and a dream

Yeah, ten years gone, I’ve been around the world
And somehow, I always wind up here
Must be this company I keep, oh that takes me back
And gets me on my feet
Yeah, my life is still exactly what it seems
 A memory and a dream

Yeah, my life is still exactly what it seems
A memory and a dream

It’s a long, hard, and a windin’ road to where I am right now
A lot of days I wish I could change but I can’t figure how

Looking For a Friend

I stopped by a place I used to know But nobody knew my name
And I felt out of place and out of time
But I had one just the same
The new bartender did not seem to care
About a story of back then
It’s gettin’ hard to find ’em, have you seen ’em?
 I’m lookin’ for a friend

It’s been a time round here, just gettin’ by
Things are hard and nothin’s new
And I’ve been waitin’ for that sun to break on a cloudy afternoon
Yeah, this winter’s been much colder
Than the ones I knew back then
It’s gettin’ hard to find ’em, have you seen ’em?
 I’m lookin’ for a friend

And I go down the road and back again
It’s hard rememberin’ where I’ve been
And I ain’t changed
It seems the world took off
And left me, that’s the way it goes
It’s a lonely road the dreamer follows
Like Peter Pan in Neverland, all alone

And I’m still singin’ for my supper, like I’ve always done
But now the business and the politics have taken most the fun
But I’ll be out there chasin’ sundown
And I’ll be home in God knows when
I’m lookin’ out to find one, I’m hopin’ I might see one
I’m lookin’ for a friend

And I go down the road and back again
It’s hard rememberin’ where I’ve been
 And I ain’t changed
It seems the world took off
And left me, that’s the way it goes
It’s a lonely road the dreamer follows
Like Peter Pan in Neverland, all alone

I stopped by a place I used to know
 But nobody knew my name

Stayin’ burnt out all the time
Well that’s a good way for you to lose your mind
Stayin’ low for too damn long
Well, that’s enough to wanna get high
I’m not saying what’s right or wrong
Some folks need a little help gettin’ along
I can’t judge, Lord, I’ve been stoned
But I know Jesus knows

And I get by
 And I get by
 We all get by
By the grace of God we all get by

Yeah, my momma introduced me to God as a child
You know my dad, he does his livin’ a little less mild
He’d rather sing those gospel songs on the front porch anyway
My baby sister, she married a man
On the other side of where dad and I land
We laugh and joke and give him hell
But he loves that little girl

 And they get by
 And they get by
 We all get by
By the grace of God we all get by
And everybody’s waiting on that day when all is right
And we’ve still got each other
To make it through another night
Everybody’s waiting on that time when all is right
We still got each other
To make it through another night

This corner bar is not a house of sin
It’s a place where all of us fit in
I’ve seen the same faces Saturday night
As I have on Sunday morning
And Brother John’s there sipping his drink
You know he don’t care what the others might think
He’ll laughs and joke and finds it funny
That the others all drink alone at home

And he gets by
 And he gets by
We all get by
By the grace of God we all get by

Stayin’ burnt out all the time
Well, that’s a good way for you to lose your mind
Stayin’ low for too damn long
Well that’s enough to wanna get high

Thunderheads

Yonder way, in the distance Thunderheads comin’ down Yesterday the sky was golden The days before, well they’d been good Every one that goes up, must come down It’s gravity
But staying grounded, safely still Robs the wanderer of bein’ afraid

Hammer down as you quest, friend To pick up speed through that next town I point my face into the wind, friend To exorcise the tragedies That come of my free will The comin’ down from the mountain Trips me up and makes me feel Like I can never find my way Back to the top And if Jesus calls before I wake I’ll consider that my break And I will ask for nothin’ nevermore Nevermore, no no, nevermore Valley roads, they lay hidden In the bottoms, without much light And it gets easy to lose direction To hide with shadows, to wait for night And every one that goes down Should get back up and start to heaven But staying grounded, safely still In the arms of God becomes your will Take your time as you start up, friend Enjoy the view atop the rung Point your face into the sky, friend Smilin’, oh that mean ol’ Devil Sure don’t like the sun No he sure don’t like it none Comin’ down from the mountain trips me up And makes me feel like I can never Find my way back to the top And if Jesus calls before I wake I’ll consider that my break And I will ask for nothin’ never more Nevermore, no no, nevermore Comin’ down from the mountain trips me up And makes me feel like I can never Find my way back to the top And if Jesus calls before I wake I’ll consider that my break And I will ask for nothin’ nevermore Nevermore, no no, nevermore

13 years this spring, we’ve been together And I recall more good than bad Lately, you’ve been showin’ signs you no longer like me I don’t have to tell you I’ve been sad It’s been good and off domestic situation You’ve been my rock all through the years Now I’ve got to find a way to change our dispositions Well, I’m tired of fightin’ back my tears

I don’t know what I’ve done to bring you down And you won’t even look at me And I feel unwelcome in my own house But I’m still the same old me Yeah, the other day you were thinkin’ about leavin’ And I told you then I don’t want that But then you brought it up again, like I’d forgotten That wall sure feels cold against my back You point that gun long enough at somebody And they’ll holler “shoot” “Go on, pull that trigger, I’m tired of playin’” The hell that comes with not knowin’ If you’re really leavin’ Is worse than if that day may come itself I don’t know what I’ve done to bring you down But you won’t even look at me And I feel unwelcome in my own house But I’m still the same old me 13 years this spring, we’ve been together I still recall more good than bad

Prairie House Redemption

All the people ask me where I’ve been Where I’m from, where I’m from Down the muddy banks to a place Out on the edge of town I’ve been down, I’ve been down To the Prairie House

Lay your money down on the barrel head By the door, with your gun You won’t need your gun And don’t you cross the Reverend On a Thursday night in a game of stud Son, you’re gonna lose, you’re gonna lose The doorman knew So here’s to you and I at the end of the day Forgiving all the wrongs we’ve made We can set them up and lay them all down Singing this is where we’re bound Where we’re bound Yeah, the judge’s wife sits behind the bar And she’ll set them up she’ll set you straight, she’ll set you straight Oh, the sheriff is a bluesman and he’ll sing a song Sing along, sing along Sing with every song Here’s to you and I at the end of the day Forgiving all the wrongs we’ve made We can set them up and lay them all down Singing “this is where we’re bound” Where we’re bound Oh Lord, please walk with us On our not so narrow way Oh Lord, please be with us Can’t you hear this old house pray?

Glad to Stay

The good guys always win And we’re all forgivin’ of our sins And the whole world smiles when a child is born And everyone’s color blind And my God and your God are one of kind Who wants a holy war anyway? There’s just a few things I’d be glad to say

There’s no homeless on our streets There’s no crooked politicians takin’ money from me And the banks look out for the little man We’re all of the ones that care The teachers and the nurses, we’ve made ’em millionaires And the lawyers all work pro bono There’s just a few things I’d be glad to say And time will find the reasons The where’s, the why’s, and all that lead us Seeking shelter, seeking truth I find it’s harder with age All the childhood things that we threw away They were just pieces of our innocence I find it’s harder with age All the childhood things that we threw away They were just pieces of our innocence I don’t miss those cigarettes And I never drink to try to forget And this old world is still a damn fine place There’s just a few things I’d be glad to say And time will find the reason The where, the why’s, and all that lead us Seeking shelter, seeking truth I find it’s harder with age All the childhood things that we’ve put away They were just pieces of our innocence The good guys always win And we’re all forgivin’ of our sins And the whole world smiles when a child is born

Here’s to you, my lady bug You’re my gift from God above Precious little angel child Come, be still with me a while

It rained for weeks before you came How do you know I love the rain The whole world changed when you found yours No, nothin’ new would be the same Never fear child I’m right here child Lady bug Here’s to you my wild flower May you stand the tests of time Dark days come, and dark days pass Just keep reaching for that sun Always grow child And always know child Wild flower Here’s to you, my blue-eyed girl It’s your time to change the world Freely give the gifts you bring Whoa learn to laugh, child, dance and sing Be yourself child Find yourself child My blue-eyed girl So here’s to you, my lady bug Come be still with me a while

This Old Guitar

This old guitar Is gonna smell like this bar tomorrow Yeah, the smell is all it gets, I take the pay But when I open up that case, we remember the night before This old guitar Is gonna smell like this bar tomorrow

And my old truck She was new about a year ago Yeah, she’s lived an old truck’s lifetime, carryin’ me down the road When I turn that engine over, she’s ready and willin’ to go My old truck She was new about a year ago My sweet girl She’s gonna be smilin’ when I get home Yeah, she gives more than she takes, she don’t take that much And I’ll be pullin’ up in a dirty old truck with a smelly old guitar My sweet girl Gonna be smilin’ when I get home I’ve got me a friend He’s always there beside me And I forget sometimes he’s there, but he’s always there When I find myself some trouble, he’s the first guy that I call I’ve got me a good friend I ain’t never seen at all This old guitar Is gonna smell like this bar tomorrow

Loveletters And Cigarettes

Whiskey bent and hell bound.
