95 most inspirational travel quotes ever penned
Our favourite inspirational travel quotes have encouraged us to travel with abandon over the years. Perhaps they will do the same for you…
For us, there is no such thing as luxury travel; travel is, by default, a luxury. It is a privilege provided by the country of our birth, a privilege that many are not as fortunate to enjoy.
Sometimes, we have to pinch ourselves at just how ridiculous our lives have become: an ex-teacher and jobbing writer travelling the world for a living. It is absurd, it is astonishing, it is luxury.
When I first went travelling at 21 years old, my father gave me this quote scrawled on a piece of card.
It infused me with wanderlust. It encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone, make the most of my time, see the world and enjoy the freedom that comes with being on the road. It remains one of the most inspirational travel quotes I’ve read (even if Twain did not actually say it).
Today, 20 years and almost 100 countries later, it’s still in my wallet. Despite its tattered and dishevelled appearance, it’s every bit as important to me now as it was then.
With that in mind, we’ve collated our most beloved inspirational travel quotes to encourage readers to “explore, dream and discover” for themselves.

• Mark Twain Travel Quotes
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one’s lifetime.
To do something, say something, see something, before anybody else — these are the things that confer a pleasure compared with which other pleasures are tame and commonplace, other ecstasies cheap and trivial. Lifetimes of ecstasy crowded into a single moment.
It is the loveliest fleet of islands [ Hawaii ] that lies anchored in any ocean.
No alien land in all the world has any deep strong charm for me but that one [ Hawaii ], no other land could so longingly and so beseechingly haunt me, sleeping and waking, through half a lifetime, as that one has done. Other things leave me, but it abides; other things change, but it remains the same. For me the balmy airs are always blowing, its summer seas flashing in the sun; the pulsing of its surfbeat is in my ear; I can see its garlanded crags, its leaping cascades, its plumy palms drowsing by the shore, its remote summits floating like islands above the cloud wrack; I can feel the spirit of its wildland solitudes, I can hear the splash of its brooks; in my nostrils still lives the breath of flowers that perished twenty years ago.

If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine; it is lethal. — Paulo Coelho
Most of us abandoned the idea of a life full of adventure and travel sometime between puberty and our first job. Our dreams died under the dark weight of responsibility. Once a journey is designed, equipped, and put in process, a new factor enters and takes over. A trip, a safari, an exploration, is an entity, different from all other journeys. It has personality, temperament, individuality, uniqueness. A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless. We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us. Tour masters, schedules, reservations, brass-bound and inevitable, dash themselves to wreckage on the personality of the trip. It’s a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you’re ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any. — Hugh Laurie
Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the Earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white. — Mark Jenkins
The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. — Christopher McCandless

Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses. — Bill Bryson
The true fruit of travel is perhaps the feeling of being nearly everywhere at home. — Freya Stark
When you’ve managed to stumble directly into the heart of the unknown – either through the misdirection of others, or better yet, through your own creative ineptitude – there is no one there to hold your hand or tell you what to do. In those bad lost moments, in the times when we are advised not to panic, we own the unknown, and the world belongs to us. The child within has full reign. Few of us are ever so free. — Tim Cahill

• Anthony Bourdain Travel Quotes
If you’re twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel – as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them – wherever you go.
Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks — on your body or on your heart — are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.
It’s an irritating reality that many places and events defy description. Angkor Wat and Machu Picchu , for instance, seem to demand silence, like a love affair you can never talk about. For a while after, you fumble for words, trying vainly to assemble a private narrative, an explanation, a comfortable way to frame where you’ve been and what’s happened. In the end, you’re just happy you were there — with your eyes open — and lived to see it.
Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.
I’m a big believer in winging it. I’m a big believer that you’re never going to find the perfect city travel experience or the perfect meal without a constant willingness to experience a bad one. Letting the happy accident happen is what a lot of vacation itineraries miss, I think, and I’m always trying to push people to allow those things to happen rather than stick to some rigid itinerary.
Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed popemobiles through the rural provinces of France, Mexico and the Far East, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonalds? … I know what I want. I want it all. I want to try everything once.
It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn. Maybe that’s enlightenment enough – to know that there is no final resting place of the mind, no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom, at least for me, means realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.
I think food, culture, people and landscape are all absolutely inseparable.
Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.
Southeast Asia has a real grip on me. From the very first time I went there, it was a fulfillment of my childhood fantasies of the way travel should be.
I wanted adventures. I wanted to go up the Nung river to the heart of darkness in Cambodia . I wanted to ride out into a desert on camelback, sand and dunes in every direction, eat whole roasted lamb with my fingers. I wanted to kick snow off my boots in a Mafiya nightclub in Russia. I wanted to play with automatic weapons in Phnom Penh, recapture the past in a small oyster village in France, step into a seedy neon-lit pulqueria in rural Mexico. I wanted to run roadblocks in the middle of the night, blowing past angry militia with a handful of hurled Marlboro packs, experience fear, excitement, wonder. I wanted kicks – the kind of melodramatic thrills and chills I’d yearned for since childhood, the kind of adventure I’d found as a little boy in the pages of my Tintin comic books. I wanted to see the world – and I wanted the world to be just like the movies.
At this point I think my body is like an old car. Another dent ain’t gonna make a whole lot of difference. At best it’s a reminder that you’re still alive and lucky as hell. Another tattoo, another thing you did, another place you’ve been.
Without experimentation, a willingness to ask questions and try new things, we shall surely become static, repetitive, and moribund.
If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.
Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.

Such a profound distinction – travel engages us far beyond the fleeting pleasures of a vacation. When we open ourselves to unfamiliar people and places, we open doors to transformation.
“Travel far enough, you meet yourself.” – David Mitchell
By testing ourselves in unfamiliar environments, the grit of travel reveals our true natures and we gain clearer self-knowledge. My solo backpacking trip helped me shed limiting beliefs about my introversion and capabilities.
“A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.” – Tim Cahill
Beyond sites seen, travel reveals humanity’s connective tissue. The shared joy and tribulations forge fast friendships. I still visit those I met on my very first hostel trip decades ago – they feel like old souls.
Timeless Travel Tales: Quotes on Creating Lasting Memories

This pithy quote sums it up – immersing ourselves in new places and cultures makes us feel truly alive. Vibrant sights, sounds, and connections create indelible memories that enrich life after the journey ends.
“The life you have led doesn’t need to be the only life you have.” – Anna Quindlen
Quindlen’s quote reflects how travel allows us to reinvent ourselves and craft new narratives. Career woman becomes nomad. Homebody tastes street food. Daily routines give way to unexpected adventures and discovery.
“Nobody can discover the world for somebody else. Only when we discover it for ourselves does it become common ground.” – Paul Bowles
Eloquently put – there is no substitute for personally experiencing the textures and flavors of a place. Travel transforms foreign lands from abstractions into cherished memories that forge human connections.
Lessons Learned on the Road: Quotes About Personal Growth from Travel
“traveling tends to magnify all human emotions.” – peter hoeg.
The heightened novelty and stress of navigating new places often intensify reactions. Trips reveal the deepest aspects of relationships and force personal evolution at an accelerated pace.
“Once in a while it really hits people that they don’t have to experience the world in the way they have been told to.” – Alan Keightley
Keightley describes the awakening – travel liberates us from cultural conditioning and societal expectations. We relinquish roles to rediscover our authentic selves and what truly matters.
“The journey not the arrival matters.” – T.S. Eliot
T.S. Eliot reminds us that the magic happens along the open road, with each twist and turn expanding our horizons – not just upon reaching the destination. Travel is about embracing the process, not the outcome.
The Essential Expedition: Quotes About Why Travel Matters
“travel is never a matter of money, but of courage.” – paulo coehlo.
While finances impact possibilities, at its core, travel demands the courage to venture beyond the familiar and comfortable. As Coehlo says, daring to explore opens our lives and selves.
“If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion, and avoid the people, you might better stay home.” – James Michener
Michener makes clear that keeping an open mind and embracing cultural differences are prerequisites for meaningful travel that fosters human kinship.
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” – St. Augustinus
By absorbing the diversity of life in unfamiliar realms, we enrich our perspectives and grayscale turns technicolor. Staying put closes the book while travel turns every page.
May these quotes ignite your lifelong quest to boldly venture beyond horizons, open minds to humanity’s mosaic, and discover more authentic selves. Keep collecting inspiring passages to reflect upon while lacing up your boots before the next journey that calls you.

I also own and run The Grown-up Travel Company as a travel designer creating personalised African itineraries for experienced adventurers

Royal Caribbean's newest ship is also its priciest. Here's what it's like spending as little as possible, with no lobster or other upgrades.
- Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas could be an expensive vacation compared to other cruise ships.
- Sailing on the mega-ship without paying for any of its upcharged amenities is possible.
- But it would mean spending at least $265 a day, staying sober, and repeating meals.
A budget vacation on Royal Caribbean's new wildly popular Icon of the Seas is possible. Just be prepared to stay sober, repeat meals, and pay at least $265 a day.
Right now, there's likely no better example of the mass-market cruise industry's shift toward the budget airline strategy — charge a cheap base fare and offer irresistible up-charged amenities — than Royal Caribbean's new world's largest cruise liner.
After all, what other ship comes with a $100,000-a-week cabin and a $200-per-person restaurant?
But it is possible to vacation on the mega-ship without giving into any of its upcharged restaurants and activities. If you're strong enough to do so, here's what your seven nights on Icon of the Seas could look like.
Be warned: It won't include lobsters or private lounges .
Less than half of Icon’s 28 eateries are complimentary, so you’ll likely repeat meals.
Picky eaters are sure to find at least one satisfactory option at the ship's three buffets, one of which is Mexican-themed.
If not, the complimentary pizza shop or sandwiches from the two on-board cafés might suffice.
In search of variety, grab a Mediterranean-style wrap or crepe at the five-stall food hall instead.
For a more formal dinner, budget cruisers can grub on a three-course meal at the complimentary dining room.
The three-floor restaurant has a rotating menu with classics like crab cakes, New York strip steak, and cheesecake.
Just don't expect lobster or filet mignon. Both cost extra.
For better or worse, guests snubbing upcharged options would also be snubbing booze.
Like most mass-market cruise ships, Icon of the Seas' 18 bars aren't free. If you want alcohol and sodas, be prepared to pay for a beverage package.
Thankfully, the ship’s complimentary amenities could distract you from your sobriety.
Icon's surf simulator and impressive six-slide waterpark won't run you a tab.
The same goes for its seven pools and nine hot tubs — save for one of each exclusive to guests who've booked a suite.
For drier activities, families could spend their afternoons scaling the rock climbing wall or testing their putt at the nine-hole mini-golf course.
Or they could work off their lunch buffet by sweating it out at the sports court — basketball and ping pong included — for no extra charges.
Fortunately, Icon of the Seas' nighttime entertainment is also a great equalizer. Its ice skating performance, rendition of the Broadway hit "Wizard of Oz," and multi-disciplinary dance, swim, and dive show are complimentary to all guests.
But if you want to test your fear of heights at the part-walking, part-agility, part-ziplining Crown's Edge , you'll have to cough up $49.
The arcade games aren't free, either.
Guests staying in suites have access to a shared outdoor lounge.
There's also the option to pay up to $700 for one day with a private cabana-like "casita."
But if you're on a budget, you'll have to fight "pool chair hogs" for the best poolside seating instead. (Consider bringing a sheet mask with you — a 25-minute facial at the ship's spa is almost $150.)
And hold off on your Instagram photo dumps until after your vacation.
Otherwise, you'll have to cough up $31 per day and device for streaming-enabled WiFi, totaling $217 for the duration of the cruise. (Icon of the Seas is exclusively operating seven-night sailings.)
But let’s face it: The base fare alone isn’t ultra-affordable compared to other cruise ships.
Patrick Scholes, a lodging and leisure research analyst at Truist Securities, told Business Insider in late 2023, three months before Icon's launch , that the vessel was priced at a premium of "at least 50%, if not more."
Steep, compared to the typical 20% to 50% new-ship premiums.
The cheapest interior stateroom for 2024 currently costs $265 per person per day.
But even the windowless cabin comes with its own list of upgrades.
Travelers who want to pick their own stateroom must pay an additional $128 per person. If they opt for one of the larger (by at least one square foot) interior cabins, it'll be an extra $100.
Which is to say, good luck avoiding any of the upcharged amenities on your Icon of the Seas vacation .

Which Credit Cards Have Priority Pass Restaurant Access?
Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .
Priority Pass partners with dozens of restaurants in airports around the world. At these partner restaurants, eligible Priority Pass Select members get a $28 credit toward food and beverage purchases per guest.
However, just because your travel rewards credit card offers a Priority Pass Select membership doesn't mean that you'll be able to get a free or discounted airport meal before or after your flight. That's because some credit card issuers have removed Priority Pass restaurants from their Priority Pass lounge benefit.
For those of us who appreciate a real meal before a flight — instead of just snacks from a lounge — let's focus on credit cards with Priority Pass restaurant benefits.

An overview of credit cards with Priority Pass restaurant benefits
Before we get into details below, here's an overview of the most popular travel rewards credit cards that provide Priority Pass restaurant access:
Credit cards that offer Priority Pass restaurant benefits
Chase Sapphire Reserve®
The Chase Sapphire Reserve® card is perhaps the best-known travel rewards credit card that still offers Priority Pass restaurant benefits, though it is ending July 1, 2024. For now, the card's terms, Chase states that the Priority Pass Select membership that Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardholders receive "includes access to airport lounges, restaurants, cafes and markets."
Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardholders get up to two accompanying guests per visit at no additional cost. Additional guests cost $27 per guest per visit.
A Priority Pass Select membership is just one of the card's many travel benefits. Cardholders also get:
An annual $300 travel credit.
TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application fee statement credit.
Two complimentary years of Lyft Pink All Access.
Access to Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection
These are a few of the perks you will find among the card's slew of benefits.

Bank of America® Premium Rewards® Elite credit card
The Bank of America® Premium Rewards® Elite credit card offers perhaps the most unique and generous Priority Pass restaurant benefit of any card on the list.
Premium Rewards Elite cardholders get up to four complimentary Priority Pass Select memberships with restaurant access per account. Even better, Bank of America doesn't restrict how many guests each Priority Pass member can bring into a lounge or restaurant on each visit — and there's no cost associated with bringing guests into a lounge with you.
That indicates that cardholders get up to four unlimited Priority Pass Select memberships, each with unlimited guests.
If you have a large family, this Priority Pass Select membership can easily justify the card's $550 annual fee. And that's before you factor in the card's other travel benefits, which include:
TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application fee credit.
Up to $300 annually in airline incidental statement credits.
Up to $150 annually for purchases such as rideshare services.

Emirates Skywards Premium World Elite Mastercard®
This little-known premium Emirates rewards card offers primary cardmembers and authorized users "unlimited visits for yourself as well as guests" — with no fee listed for guests over a set limit. That seems to indicate that there's no limit to the number of guests cardholders can bring into a Priority Pass lounge or restaurant with them.
In addition to this Priority Pass lounge benefit, Emirates Skywards Premium World Elite Mastercard® cardholders get Emirates Skywards Gold tier membership for their first year plus 10,000 bonus Skywards miles each account anniversary. The card charges a $499 annual fee.

UBS Visa Infinite Card
UBS offers an unlimited Priority Pass Select membership with restaurants for cardholders of the UBS Visa Infinite Card and the UBS Visa Infinite Business Card.
Unfortunately, details such as guest access and Priority Pass benefits for authorized users are absent from the UBS website. So, it's unclear how many guests cardholders can bring into Priority Pass lounges or restaurants with them.
However, even without guest access, this card may be a good fit for luxury travelers. Cardholders get:
A $250 credit for qualifying air travel expenses.
Premium benefits at select hotels through the Visa Infinite Luxury Hotel Collection.
VIP amenities at select Ritz-Carlton properties, Fairmont and Park Hyatt properties.
Plus, cardholders unlock a $500 annual credit by spending $25,000 in either the current or prior calendar year.
Use your credit card for Priority Pass restaurant meals
Using your Priority Pass membership at participating airport restaurants is a great way to get a full meal before or after your flight.
However, it's important to remember that some card issuers — such as American Express — don't include "non-lounge airport experiences" such as restaurants in their Priority Pass lounge benefits. That means it's important to check your card's terms before counting on this benefit.
Regardless of which card you have, you'll likely need to enroll with your bank before you can take advantage of this Priority Pass Select membership benefit. Also, keep in mind that Priority Pass doesn't cover gratuity on meals. So, remember to have cash on hand to tip your waitstaff.
