3 Day Kakadu & Litchfield Tour Itinerary

Get to know the Top End with our 3-day Outback 4WD adventure through Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks. We’ll explore the top waterfalls and swimming holes in the area, spot wildlife, learn more about the Aboriginal culture and spend the night camping under the incredible starry night sky.

Day One (lunch and dinner) The day starts early as we depart from Darwin, ready for our Top End adventure. Our first stop is the Mary River Wetlands Cruise, where you can observe the local wildlife in their natural habitat. The area is known for crocodiles, buffalo and around 250 species of bird, so see what you can spot as you cruise down the river.

Back on land, we enter Kakadu National Park and stop for lunch at a picturesque spot on the South Alligator River. We then journey deeper into the park to arrive at Ubirr Rock, an important Aboriginal rock art site. Here your guide will interpret the ancient paintings and tell the stories of the Dreamtime. While we are here, we take the opportunity to admire the spectacular views from the Nadab Lookout, over the vast floodplains below and all the way into Arnhem Land. We set up camp at our private campsite nearby, where we enjoy dinner and relax in the peaceful natural surrounds.

Day Two (breakfast, lunch and dinner) As you awake to the sounds of the bush, get ready for a day of adventure through Kakadu National Park. We make the journey to our first stop for the day, Twin Falls, going off-road before taking a boat shuttle and short hike to reach the tranquil swimming spot. In the afternoon, we travel to Jim Jim Falls, where we do another short hike to the waterhole. Relax on the large boulders, swim in the refreshing clear water or chill out on the small sandy beach. Then it’s time to say goodbye to Kakadu as we travel to Litchfield National Park, where we set up camp for the night.

Day Three (breakfast and lunch) We spend our final day discovering the stunning waterholes and rugged landscapes of Litchfield National Park. Hike the bush tracks around Florence and Wangi Falls or take a refreshing dip in the clear waters of the swimming holes. Explore the multiple cascades and rock pools of Buley Holes before we stop to admire the weird and wonderful termite mounds. In the evening, it’s time to head back to Darwin.

Best time to visit australia.

Being such a large place, Australia has a wide range of climates, so all year round, there is somewhere great to visit.

Summer (December to February) can get very hot but is perfect for beach-going and other outdoor activities. In the far north, it is also the wet season, which can get quite humid, and some beaches may be closed due to jellyfish or 'stingers'.

Winter (June to August) is pleasant and dry in the north but can get quite cold in the south, especially in Tasmania and Victoria, where snowfall is common.

Spring and autumn are great times to visit Australia as the weather is milder but still warm enough for swimming in northern areas.

Regardless of daytime temperatures, nights can get very cold in the desert areas of Central and Western Australia, so prepare accordingly.

The main school holiday period is from Christmas to late January and is considered the peak travel time within Australia; expect popular tourist spots to be crowded during this time.

From large malls and boutique shopping strips to weekend arts and crafts markets and vintage shops, Australia is a top place to shop. Shopping in Australia may not be cheap, but there are plenty of unique finds and original souvenirs to bring home. Before heading home, check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to import certain items back into your home country. New Zealand, for example, has strict quarantine laws.

Geography and environment

The continent of Australia is known for being one of the flattest, hottest, and driest places on earth, but despite this, there is an astounding variety of terrains and environments on this island nation. While large areas of Australia are covered in desert, there are also tropical rainforests, alpine snowfields, dense bushland, beaches, gorges, lakes, and rivers to be found.

Australia’s national parks are home to many species of birds and mammals not found in the wild anywhere else in the world, including kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, and wombats.

Boasting many stunning white sand beaches, Australia has a coastline like none other. From busy Bondi to surfing icons like Bell’s Beach and Tasmania’s stunning Wineglass Bay , there are endless places to swim, surf, snorkel and paddle.

Despite Australia’s large landmass, most people tend to live in urban, coastal cities. Faster-paced cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne hold much of the population, as do regional satellite cities such as Albury, Dubbo, Bunbury, Townsville, Newcastle and Geelong.

Outback towns have a unique flavor and a distinct way of life; things are slower here, and due to smaller populations, space is plentiful, with most locals relying on agriculture for a living. Venturing away from the city to visit the Outback and rural areas of Australia is highly recommended, as it gives travelers the chance to see a different side of Australia. Traverse the northern regions of Australia's iconic outback landscape on a 11 day Darwin to Broome Outback tour.

Culture and customs

With a strong history of immigration, modern Australia is made up of people from many different cultural backgrounds. This mix makes Australia an endlessly fascinating place to visit, as travelers will be exposed to a variety of different customs and cultures during their stay. From the ancient, spiritual ways of the First Nations population to the wide array of faiths, foods, and festivals on display in the big cities, Australia is a cultural melting pot.

Despite the differences, there are many things that unify the people of Australia. Sports, in particular cricket, soccer, and football (Australian Rules), are played and watched by the masses, irrespective of age, race, gender, or income. Large sporting events like the AFL Grand Final, Melbourne Cup Day, and the Boxing Day Cricket Test have universal appeal for Australians.

Australians relish public holidays, with national and state holidays offering locals time to relax with friends and family over a barbecue or picnic. Making use of Australia’s natural environment is also paramount during this time, with outdoor activities like bushwalking, swimming at the beach, or lazing in the park popular with locals.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat, or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Australia is a land that has been built by immigrants, and these multicultural influences are evident in the wide array of food available. In the cities, it’s possible to find world-class Vietnamese, Turkish, Italian, Greek, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, and Indian restaurants, as well as excellent gastro-pub fare. Head to the Outback, and you’ll find authentic ' bush tucker ', simple campfire meals, and sizzling barbecues.

Food to try in Australia

1. Fresh seafood

With such an impressive coastline, it’s no wonder fresh oysters, prawns, mussels, and ‘balmain bugs’ are devoured by locals and savored by visitors. For those on a budget, there’s nothing wrong with eating fish and chips on the beach.

Australia creates some of the best wines in the world at South Australia’s Barossa Valley , Western Australia’s Margaret River , and New South Wales’s Hunter Valley .

Whether you’re downing a can of VB in Victoria or sipping micro-brewed ale in Sydney, sharing a beer with mates is a social experience not to be missed when in Australia

4. Hot pies

An Australian classic – savory meat pies (or vegetable pies for vegetarians) are best eaten with tomato sauce and are easily found and served in city cafes, country bakeries, and football matches around Australia.

What's the transport like in Australia?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun. Depending on which trip you're on while in Australia, you may even find yourself traveling overland.

Overland tours

Australia is a big place – like, huge. Overland tours involve a lot of time on the road covering long distances, and sometimes the landscape can be pretty barren, so bring a book or some tunes to keep you company.

What's the accommodation like in Australia?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Australia you may find yourself staying in a:

Our lodge accommodation is located outside major cities, such as near the entrance to a National Park, and has its own amenities such as a restaurant or dining room. Lodges are comfortable places to stay and offer a good night's rest after a day spent exploring the natural beauty of Australia.

Permanent Tented Campsite

There's no need to put up your tent when you spend the night in a Permanent Tented Campsite. You'll have a roof over your head and will bunk down on sleeper mats on the ground or stretcher (camp) beds, with access to a toilet/shower block. Tent sizes can vary depending on the trip you're on and the location you're visiting. Some of our permanent tented campsites are a little bit fancy, others are very simple. Sometimes you'll be sharing a tent with others in your group.

Our bush camping experiences are as diverse as Australia itself. Some offer swag camping under cover or under the twinkling stars. You could be sleeping in a tent with access to simple toilet or shower amenities or you might not have access to a shower at all. However, the scenery at these magical spots makes it worth going without a bath for a day or so. Sometimes a trip has participatory camping where everyone pitches in to help. Other times, a staff member is on hand to look after things like cooking.

We provide accommodation at a wide variety of hotels around Australia. Some are quite upmarket, others less so, but all of them offer a comfortable stay and ensuite facilities.

We use hostels on some trips which means your bed could be in a twin room or a shared dorm room. Some of these rooms come with their own facilities while others have share facilities.

Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

Does my trip to Australia support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Australia directly support our foundation partners, Blue Carbon Lab, Greening Australia and WWF-Australia. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Blue Carbon Lab

Blue Carbon Lab is helping to mitigate climate change by restoring and protecting blue carbon in coastal wetlands. Please note at least a moderate to high level of fitness and agility is required here with flat pathways combined with rocky crossings leading you to the plunge pool through the monsoon forest.

After our 2km walk, swim and lunch, we head south through Kakadu National Park towards our private safari campsite in Katherine where we will be able to relax under the stars and enjoy the evening’s hospitality around the campfire.

It’s now time to continue our journey, making our way to the beautiful Edith Falls for further relaxation in picture-perfect Top End surroundings with a picnic lunch, a huge plunge pool beneath a cascading waterfall, and a welcome chance to cool off! After your day of culture, walks and swims we head back to our private campsite for a stunning sunset and evening stargazing.

Our adventure is not yet complete as we now head into Litchfield National Park on our way back to Darwin for the end of our fifth day. Leaving Katherine we travel north towards the world-class Litchfield National Park , surrounded by thick pockets of tropical rainforest, offering a cool escape from the heat of the Top End.

View the monolithic Magnetic Termite Mounds and then have an opportunity to cool in Litchfield’s beautiful natural plunge pools like Buley Rockholes or Wangi Falls . Our commitment

At Autopia Tours, we actively promote the protection of flora and fauna on our Darwin Top End Tours. It is our duty to ensure there is minimal disturbance to this World Heritage Listed region and the species that call it home. Cultural sensitivity and respect for the traditional owners should also be shown at all times.

Part of our responsibility is educating guests on minimal impact practices and the importance of ensuring the safety of wildlife and the environmental sustainability of the destinations we visit.

Learn more about EcoTourism: https://www.ecotourism.org.au/

Traditional Owners

Autopia Tours would like to begin by paying our respects to the traditional owners of this country, with specific acknowledgement to the Wurundjeri people. Please be conscious and respectful of the sensitivities of indigenous culture and the spiritual connection they have with the land at all times.

Wildlife Encounters

The natural behaviours of wildlife are to be respected and not interfered with. When viewing wildlife, people should take care to avoid rapid or sudden movements, which could frighten the animal, and should keep noise to a minimum and refrain from touching, petting or feeding all wildlife including birds. Contact with people can introduce diseases to wildlife and can cause them to become aggressive.

Wildlife should not be handled or fed, unless by certified wildlife handlers. Feeding wildlife can alter their natural foraging behaviour and can lead to disease or illness through contact with people and the introduction of foods that are harmful to their digestive system. Feeding wildlife can also cause them to become aggressive toward people.

Wildlife that appears to be in distress, injured or in danger should be reported immediately to the appropriate authority, such as your Guide/Tour Leader, a National Park Ranger or Visitor Centre Staff.

Protecting our National Parks

People should remain on designated walking tracks, behind safety barriers/fences and follow all directions given by the guide/tour leader. Venturing off these can alter fragile ecosystems and can harm wildlife shelters and native vegetation. There are other dangers to be aware of too, such as cliff edges, unstable rock formations, overhanging tree branches and slippery ground cover. Remaining on tracks ensures safe visitation for guests and the environment.

No flora or fauna should be removed from their natural setting. This includes dead wood, fallen leaves, flowers and so forth, as they form part of the ecosystem of the region and their removal could cause a disturbance.

Waste Management

All buses are fitted with waste bins. No organic waste should be disposed of onto the ground. Although organic, items such as banana peels, apple cores, bread and other food scraps, are not natural/native to the region and can introduce pest species, diseases or harm to wildlife if found and eaten. We recommend all passengers bring a water bottle with you on our Grampians Tour. Purchasing bottled water contributes large amounts of plastic into the landfill. Therefore, we ask guests to bring their own bottle, as there is access to water refill stations available on our vehicles. Please ensure you stay hydrated throughout the tour to reduce the risk of sun exposure and dehydration.

All our guides carry a current Level 2 First Aid certificate. Please report any accident or illness to your tour guide. We recommend anyone with an existing medical condition to carry their medication with them on tour and to notify their tour guide at the beginning of the tour.

If you are a smoker! We ask you to refrain from smoking whilst in the company of other passengers and limit it to designated smoking areas. Smoking is not permitted on any of our vehicles, or in any type of accommodation including permanent campsites. We make frequent ‘comfort stops’ to allow free time for guests but cannot guaranteed smoke breaks. Please ensure you dispose of your cigarette butt responsibly and appropriately.

Know before you book

What is a suitable age for this tour?

Children aged between 8 to 17 years old must be accompanied by an adult or legal guardian at all times. Not suitable for infants or children 7 years and under, due to safety requirements and a high level of fitness required to complete the hikes involved.

Do you cater to food allergies and dietary requirements?

Yes, please notify us if you have any dietary requirements or medical conditions at the time of booking, or at least a few days prior to departure, that way we can make any necessary arrangements.

What type of food do we eat on tour?

Most of the meals are prepared by our tour guides with basic camping-style food options and on occasions, they will be provided by our accommodation providers onsite. Guests are asked to participate in the preparation of meals, clean-up, and vehicle unpacking/loading as it’s a great way to get to know and connect with your fellow travellers.

How fit do I need to be for this tour?

A minimum moderate to advanced level of fitness is required to complete the walks. The length of walks will be between 2km to 4km each day, often over steep rocky sections and in direct sunlight and high humidity. An approximate 9-11km walk is included in this tour. Embarking on walks will be at the guide’s discretion to ensure the safety of guests. Therefore a medium/high level of fitness is required and a doctor’s certificate is required for people over 70 years (30 days prior to travel) .

Where do we stay on tour?

This tour has exclusive access to our own permanent campsites in the Northern Territory, with purpose-built infrastructure. Our guests can dine together privately and in outback comfort. We offer two sleeping options, such as a traditional bush swag or a safari tent for that true outback adventure experience. These tours have access to communal campground bathrooms and shower facilities. With two nights in the Kakadu area and two nights in the Katherine area.

What are the sleeping arrangements?

 • Basic Single Swag (sleeps 1) – This Basic Single Swag fare price is (Per Person) for Adults or Children. For guests who wish to sleep under the stars on the ground, in a self-contained canvas-covered bush bed roll with a camp mattress.
 • Twin Share Safari Tent (sleeps 2) – This Safari Tent fare price is (Per Person) for Adults or Children. For guests wishing to sleep in the outback but remain protected from the elements, we provide permanent tented campsites, twin single beds with mattresses, bed linen supplied. ( Solo travellers booking separately in a Twin Share Safari Tent will be paired with another solo passenger, where possible of the same gender but not guaranteed. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times no matter the sleep arrangements.)

These sites generally have limited solar power or are unpowered. Therefore, guests are asked to bring rechargeable power banks (limited power access to charge phones or cameras).

What is the minimum number of passengers required in order to operate?

A minimum of eight people is required to operate our 5-Day Top End 4WD Camping Adventure Tours. We will transfer all monies paid on a future departure date if your departure is cancelled due to insufficient passenger numbers.

How much luggage can I bring on tour?

We ask that guests travelling on short break/extended tours bring small soft overnight bags and hand luggage only as we have limited storage onboard our vehicles. Large suitcases and oversized luggage can be left at your hotel whilst you are on tour.

Are National Park fees included in the tour cost?

Autopia Tours includes Parks Australia fees within the tour price, this covers our guests for a 5-Day access to Kakadu National Parks. Park Passes are not available for purchase by guests not traveling onboard our tours.

What kind of vehicle do we travel in for this Kakadu Outback Adventure tour?

We have a couple of all-terrain 4×4 range eco-tour bus, uniquely designed to handle the harshest of terrains and off-road tracks. The maximum number of passengers we carry on these tours is 15-21 people, with a minimum requirement of 8 people to guarantee the departure. Fleet specs: Isuzu N Series NPS300 Trucks (15, 17, 21-seater). In the unlikely event of a breakdown, alternative vehicles may be used.

Is it safe to travel in Australia’s outback? (Acceptance of Risk)

Australia is home to many dangerous creatures, extreme weather conditions, and varied terrain. Experiencing these dangers while camping, hiking, or passing time outside may increase your personal risk. Safety is our number one priority, and our guides are highly trained to ensure passenger safety at all times. Get Lost Travel Pty Ltd cannot accept responsibility for any loss, injury, or accident caused by passengers onboard Autopia Tours. In the Top End, children must be at least 6 years old for day trips and 8 years old for overnight tours. Children under the age of 18 must always be accompanied by an adult, legal guardian, or caregiver. Despite all care being taken, the responsibility for children on tour lies entirely with their parents or caregivers. Passengers, including children, must wear shoes, sunscreen, and hats at all times.

Do I require travel insurance for the Top End?

It is highly recommended that all passengers have personal travel insurance, given we’re exploring remote parts of the Northern Territory with limited access to health professionals in the event of sickness or injury. Autopia Tours is not authorised to provide information on the type of plan or policy options available. This can be provided by an accredited local travel agent or from your preferred insurance company.

What is the temperature like in the Northern Territory?

The weather in the Northern Territory can fluctuate and be extreme. It is not unheard of for temperatures to reach over 40+ degrees Celsius in the dry season and in the evening the temperature drops dramatically. Please ensure you have checked the average temperatures for the time of year you are traveling and have packed adequate clothing. In the event of rain or inclement weather, your experience will still go ahead, unless contacted by the provider.

What is your Vaccination Policy?

In accordance with current Government regulations, it is no longer a requirement to be double vaccinated, although we do highly recommend it.

Our COVID Statement

For your safety, we have implemented comprehensive hygiene measures and increased regular sanitation. Temperature checks of all staff will be conducted pre-departure, with disposable face masks and hand-sanitizer provided. For more information click here .

tours kakadu and litchfield

Recently I had the privilege of enjoying this 5 day tour with Jay as our tour leader for the first four days and Iris as leader on the last day. Jays enthusiasm and positive attitude inspired the whole group. Her diligence and dedication to a job she clearly loves demonstrated an intelligent approach to her work. Jay has learned so much about my country and generously educates me and others who are privileged to join one of her tours. She shares this knowledge sensitively, interestingly and generously. Her wit and tasteful humour, helped coalesce our group and give us common bonding ground. Jays efficiency, driving skills, food prep and ability to inspire the group topped off a wonderful experience I will not forget. She is a truly professional guide and has helped me tick this item off my bucket list in an enjoyable and educational way I had not dreamt possible.

Amazing experience, it really showcased how much of an amazing place the Northern Territory is. I highly recommend this tour.

tours kakadu and litchfield

Last week I had the luck to participate in the 5 days Kakadu + Katherine + litchfield budget tours in the NT, coming from Italy. The organization by Autopia Tours was excellent, including the best places to visit in these wonderful parks, so different from European landscapes. I would like to give special thanks to Jay, our guide for the first 4 days, who was definitely more than “just a guide”: she truly transmitted the love and passion she feels for those places, she bonded with us perfectly, supporting us, teaching us, driving us around, cooking for us… all of this in the best possibile way!! She was vital to make this experience truly unforgettable! I highly recommend this tour, particularly to Europeans that might go there only once in a lifetime and want to make the most of the days spent there.

tours kakadu and litchfield

First of all, We would like to congratulate Autopia, which has tied our guides Tim and Elliot to the company.

These guides of ours on our tour 14-14 August 2024 gave us en insight into Australia, an Australia that we understood they love so much. They told us in a commited and insightful way about culture, history, indigenous people and nature. For us Europeans, I think it was espacially valuable. The really took care of us 5 on the tour of the national parks.

Finally, we would like to thank Autopia for not cancelling our tour, as you would have the oppertunity because there should have been at least 8 travelers according to the booking. But you understood that we, 5 Europeens from different countries, would hardly have a second chance / Ewa and Bengt Melin from Sweden

Day 1: Darwin - Kakadu National Park

Our adventure departs from Darwin and heads to the Mary River Wetlands region for a Crocodile Cruise on the river. You’ll see a diverse range of birdlife native to the Top End, not to mention some of the region’s largest apex predators… the saltwater crocodile!

From here, we travel to Kakadu National Park , stopping in for a visit at the Bowali Visitor Centre, where you’ll learn more about the park’s wildlife, landscapes and the vibrant Aboriginal art, culture and history of this remarkable region.

After some relaxation at camp, we journey north to Cahills Crossing on the border of Kakadu and Arnhem Land .

We then arrive at the World Heritage Listed site, Ubirr and take a guided walk through this sacred site containing some of the most ancient and best-preserved Aboriginal Rock Art in the world.

We climb up high to the lookout over the Nadab Floodplain and watch the sun set majestically over the horizon. Then, after a massive day of adventures, we head back to our cosy campsite to cook up a feed together and enjoy a relaxing evening with our fellow travellers.

Day 2: Kakadu Waterfalls & Plunge Pools

Early to rise on day 2 as we travel south towards Kakadu National Park .

Together we spend the day absorbed in the striking natural beauty of the region, hiking through thick, luscious tropical monsoon rainforests, cooling off in crystal clear plunge pools and waterholes surrounded by glorious cascading waterfalls and steep rocky escarpments and cliffs.

Depending on seasonal weather conditions and accessibility permitting, we generally visit Twin Falls or Jim Jim Falls. Alternatively , we stop at Barramundi Gorge (Maguk) or another waterfall, such as Yurmikmik (Motor Car Falls) . Your guide will ensure you get the best experience wherever you end up.

If time permits, we visit Nourlangie Rock , another important indigenous rock art site where archaeologists estimate works date back over 20,000 years. We delve into the important social, cultural and environmental changes that evolved in this area over time before making our way back to camp for a a warm hearty meal and a well-deserved rest.

Day 3: Litchfield National Park to Darwin

We set off together and travel south through Pine Creek , a small pioneering town outside of Kakadu National Park in the Katherine region, famous for its gold discovery in the 1970s. We stop off briefly for a refreshment break by the Adelaide River before journeying to Litchfield National Park .

Our afternoon is immersed in Litchfield’s natural water wonderland and an oasis of waterfalls, spring-fed streams and rocky sandstone escarpments. We spend time cooling off with a refreshing soak in picturesque plunge pools, rock holes and waterfalls at either Buley Rockholes, Wangi Falls or Florence Falls.

We then venture out to explore some of the largest and most impressive Magnetic and Cathedral Termite Mounds in the Top End before making our way back, arriving at your accommodation in Darwin.

A Lovely Planet

Kakadu Itinerary – 4 days in Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks

Despite living in Australia for more than four years, I had still never made it to the Northern Territory. I was desperate to go and swim in the incredible rock pools in Litchfield National Park, get up close (not too close) to crocodiles in Kakadu National Park and experience the tropical climate and scenery of the NT. So when the state borders reopened, we decided to go for it and hopped on a plane to Darwin for a 4 day adventure in Kakadu and Litchfield.

Kakadu Itinerary

This 4 day Northern Territory itinerary starts and ends in Darwin and focuses primarily on Kakadu with a day in Litchfield at the end.

 • Day 1 – Darwin to Kakadu
 • Day 2 – Kakadu
 • Day 3 – Kakadu to Litchfield
 • Day 4 – Litchfield to Darwin

Car or Camper in Kakadu?

We hired a car and stayed in hotels throughout the trip, however, there is also the option of hiring a campervan, motorhome or sleeping in a tent. We considered this option however some of the roads in Kakadu require a 4WD which means they are inaccessible by most campervans. Throughout our NT holiday, we saw lots of people driving SUVs with tents on the top so that is a good choice if you’re keen to camp. One plus for the campervan option is that you don’t have to rely on the restaurants in the national park, which are few and far between and not always open when you’re hungry! I would not recommend camping during the wet season because it gets extremely hot – not fun in a tent.

When to visit Kakadu and Litchfield?

The dry season (April to October) is the most popular time to visit, specifically between June and August. You can still visit during the wet season (November to March) but only in certain periods and depending on the weather and rains.

Kakadu’s traditional land owners, the Aboriginal people who have lived there for thousands of years, recognise 6 different seasons in the area, which are:

 • Kudjewk – Monsoon season – December to March. 24°C – 34°C
 • Bangkerreng – storm season – April. 23°C – 34°C
 • Yekke – Cooler (but still humid) season – May to mid-June. 21°C – 33°C
 • Wurrkeng – Cold weather season – Mid-June to mid-August. 17°C – 32°C
 • Kurrung – Hot dry weather – Mid-August to mid-October. 23°C – 37°C
 • Kunumeleng – Pre-monsoon storm season – Mid-October to late December. 24°C – 37°C

Hayley standing on a rocky cliff looking at the sunset in Kakadu National Park

We visited in late October/early November during Kunumeleng and didn’t have a single day of rain, there were thousands of birds on the wetlands and the waterfalls had a good flow. It was hot but I would absolutely recommend this time of year. We also planned lots of our activities in the early morning and late afternoon to avoid the midday sun. General advice is to avoid Kudjewk because much of the national park is flooded and inaccessible also be wary of the storms in Bangkerreng.

Day 1 – Darwin to Kakadu National Park

If you can, plan to fly into Darwin in the morning (or arrive the day before) so you can take full advantage of the day in the city. If it’s at all possible, aim to arrive on a Saturday so you can experience the wonderful Parap Village markets .

Parap Village Markets

The markets feature an eclectic mix of products and cuisines reflecting Darwin’s multicultural community. There are stalls selling an array of Asian foods and we had been recommended the Laksa – which was without a doubt the best I’ve had. The markets are open from 8 am to 2 pm every Saturday.

fresh melons and mangos on a market stall

After re-fueling at the market, get on the road and head to Jabiru in Kakadu National Park. It takes around 3 hours to drive from Darwin to Kakadu so you don’t want to leave it too late, especially as you’ll find more wildlife on the roads at dusk.

Tip: Before you depart Darwin, fill up your car with petrol and download offline maps onto your phone, because there isn’t much phone reception in Kakadu National Park.

Make a stop at Bowali Visitor Centre , which is a good introduction to the park. There is a walk through display with information about the plants, animals and landscapes in Kakadu, as well as a cafe and art gallery featuring local Aboriginal artists. You can also pick up maps and useful info on the park. If you haven’t already bought your Kakadu Park Pass , you can buy it here. ($25 AUD for adults and free for NT residents).

Sleep – Jabiru

Spend your first night in the town of Jabiru. This is the main township in Kakadu National Park and has lots of facilities including a shopping centre and a medical centre. This is also where you’ll find most of the Kakadu accommodation.

Find hotels in Jabiru

Where to stay in Kakadu National Park

Budget .

Aurora Kakadu Lodge has rooms with shared bathrooms and en-suite bungalows. There is a lagoon-style swimming pool and an onsite bar and restaurant as well as BBQ facilities, and some rooms have kitchenettes. You can also camp at Aurora Kakadu Lodge where there are powered caravan and campsites plus unpowered campsites with BBQ, camp kitchen and laundry facilities. From $160 per night for a room or $30 per night for an unpowered site.

Mid-Range/Luxury

We stayed at the Mercure Kakadu Crocodile , which is actually built in the shape of a crocodile! Pretty cool. There is a pool in the middle (in what is effectively its belly) and a restaurant and bar. It’s slightly dated but is the most high-end option in Jabiru. From $240 per night.

tours kakadu and litchfield

After checking in to your accommodation, head back on the road to Ubirr for sunset. This is about a 30 minute drive from Jabiru, so make sure you allow yourself enough time (and don’t miss the sun setting).

Cahills Crossing

Before you arrive at Ubirr stop at Cahills Crossing, where the road crosses the East Alligator River into Arnhem Land. It’s a great place to see saltwater crocodiles and there is a lookout from above. Don’t get too close or walk across the crossing, as submerged crocs can move pretty quickly. When we were there, a few guys were fishing off the rocks which I found terrifying, but apparently it’s a good place for barramundi (which the crocodiles also enjoy).

A large saltwater crocodile on the banks at Cahills Crossing on our Kakadu itinerary

Ubirr is a rock formation overlooking floodplains and woodlands and is home to incredible Aboriginal rock art. A 1km trail links the various artworks which include x-ray style paintings thought to have been painted within the last 1500 years and a painting of a Tasmanian tiger, which was believed to have become extinct on mainland Australia 2,000-3,000 years ago.

Aboriginal rock art at Ubirr

At the end of the trail, climb up the rocks to an outlook with beautiful views and watch the sunset. It’s a magical experience.

A orange sunset over flooded plains

Day 2 – Kakadu National Park

Get up early, have breakfast at your accommodation and make your way to the Mamukala wetlands. We took a tour with Victor from Ayal Cultural Tours. Victor is a Minitja man and a traditional owner of Kakadu. As well as his extensive knowledge of the area passed down from his ancestors, he also spent 28 years working as a ranger in the national park. He offers a variety of tours, depending on the season and we took a private Mamukala Wetlands Tour with him.

Mamukala Wetlands

The Mamukala wetlands are home to an incredible array of bird life including magpie geese, kites, comb-crested jacanas, cormorants, willie wagtails, purple swamp hens, finches and kingfishers. Kakadu is home to one third of Australia’s bird species, and many aren’t found anywhere else in the world.

Hundreds of birds gather in the Mamukala Wetlands

A covered lookout allows you to admire the birds while sheltering from the sun. We then took a 3km walk around the wetlands, where Victor taught us about the various flora and fauna and their different uses for bush tucker, medicines and for creating baskets and tools.

You don’t need a tour guide to visit the wetlands, but we got so much more out of the experience doing the walk with Victor.

A termite mound with people walking in the distance

Marrawuddi Gallery

Head back to Jabiru to check out of your accommodation and visit the Marrawuddi Gallery .

Marrawuddi is an Aboriginal owned and operated gallery and cafe, run by the Mirarr People, the Traditional Owners of Jabiru and other parts of Kakadu and Western Arnhem Land. All the artworks displayed and sold in Marrawuddi are created by Aboriginal people from Kakadu and the surrounding country, and the profits are used to fund local initiatives.

Marrawuddi Gallery featuring Aboriginal artworks

It’s a lovely place to have a coffee and admire the beautiful artwork. If you’re considering purchasing Aboriginal art, it is also a good place to buy as the gallery is a member of the Indigenous Art Code, meaning all trades are fair and ethical, between artist and dealer and artists are paid a fair price for their work.

Get back in the car and drive 40 minutes to Cooinda Lodge Kakadu Hotel .

Cooinda Lodge Kakadu Hotel

This is an awesome outback retreat with glamping tents and lodges and a big lagoon-style pool. Have lunch at the restaurant (I recommend the barramundi, which is a fish caught in the rivers and ocean in the NT), and then enjoy a little time by the pool.

a lagoon style swimming pool with a waterfall

Book Cooinda Lodge

Jim Jim Falls

Depending on the season, now would be a good time to head to Jim Jim Falls. It’s just over an hours drive from Cooinda to the falls but the road can be flooded so check before you go. You’ll need a 4WD to drive Jim Jim Falls road. Otherwise, tours are available from Cooinda Lodge.

It’s a 2km walk through forest and over boulders to the base of the falls, which has a deep pool where you can swim. The waterfall flows from the start of the wet season until mid-July.

Visitors dwarfed by the large scale of Jim Jim Falls in Kakadu.

Covering nearly 20,000 square kilometres, Kakadu National Park is teeming with wildlife, home to important Aboriginal rock art sites, and takes in diverse and exotic landscape.

Water Safety: Saltwater crocodiles live in and around both Kakadu National Park and Litchfield National Park and are extremely dangerous. Despite their name, they are not only found in saltwater. Before you swim, check signage and make sure it is a designated swimming area. Be extra cautious in the wet season and beginning of the dry as saltwater crocodiles make their way upstream to areas often considered safe during the dry season. Freshwater crocodiles also inhabit many waterways but are not considered dangerous providing you don’t aggravate them. (I swam in Lake Argyle which is home to thousands of freshwater crocodiles – read about it here ).

Jim Jim was closed on our trip and it was also extremely hot, so we made the most of the swimming pool and had a relaxing afternoon.

Tip: You will be up early again tomorrow, before the hotel restaurant is open, so I advise buying some snacks from the hotel shop for the next day.

Burrungkuy (Nourlangie)

Later in the afternoon make your way to Burrungkuy (Nourlangie). This is another fantastic site for Aboriginal rock art, in fact, it is considered one of the best Aboriginal rock art sites in Australia. Rangers lead guided walks and talks at the rock art site during the dry season. As we were there in the wet, we again met with Victor from Ayal Cultural Tours who told us about the different art and its meaning.

X-Ray style paintings on the rocks at Nourlangie in Kakadu

We then made our way up to Nawurlandja lookout, to watch another incredible sunset. From here you can enjoy views of the escarpment, Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) rock and Anbangbang Billabong.

A large red rock surrounded by forest

If the weather is cool enough, there are a number of walks you can do beforehand including the Anbangbang Billabong walk (easy) and the Kubara pools walk (6km).

Once the sun has set, head back to Cooinda Lodge for dinner.

Sleep – Cooinda Lodge Kakadu Hotel

Cooinda offers camping, powered sites, Lodge Rooms and Outback Retreats (glamping). From $149 AUD for lodges and glamping or $30 for unpowered and $40 for powered sites per night.

A double bed inside a glamping tent

Day 3 – Kakadu National Park to Litchfield National Park

Another early start today for the Yellow Water Sunrise Cruise . As mentioned before, make sure you have some snacks ready as the hotel restaurant is closed and you’ll be out on the boat until 9:30am.

A bus will come and collect you for the short drive to the river where you’ll be met by your host for the morning, who will entertain you with stories and jokes throughout. Once aboard the boat, you’ll cruise on the Yellow Water Billabong and South Alligator River, looking out for crocs and other wildlife including a variety of birds and buffalo.

A wide billabong with mist on the water

Back at the lodge have some breakfast before checking out and continuing on your Kakadu road trip.

Drive south until you reach the turnoff for Maguk Waterfall. Again a 4WD is required on this road. From the car park it’s a short walk through the rainforest and rocks to the waterfall and plunge pool. It’s such a gorgeous spot for a swim and you can swim right under the waterfall. Be sure to check the safety signs regarding crocodiles before you enter the water, as the rangers frequently check the area.

Hayley dives off a rock into the water at Maguk

The final drive to Litchfield National Park takes just under 3 hours. We stopped at the Lazy Lizard Tavern in Pine Creek for lunch along the way.

Sleep – Litchfield National Park

Where to stay in lichfield national park.

We stayed at Litchfield Outback Resort which also has a great restaurant and bar – The Lil’ Ripper Cafe, Bar and Bistro – which I definitely recommend for dinner. Rooms from $130 AUD. There are also unpowered campsites from $20 AUD. Although if you are camping, I would recommend continuing on and sleeping at Florence Falls (below).

Lil’ Ripper offers antipasto picnic boxes to take with you the following day into the park. Make sure you pre-order at least one day in advance.

Day 4 – Litchfield National Park to Darwin

The final day of your Litchfield and Kakadu itinerary will be spent enjoying the glorious rock holes in Litchfield National Park.

Have breakfast at The Lil’ Ripper, grab your picnic lunch and drive 35 minutes into the park to Buley Rockhole.

Buley Rockhole

This is an incredible spot with cascading rock pools of different depths. Some are just deep enough to lie in, whereas others are deep enough to jump off the rocks into.

Hayley laying in a shallow rockpool

5 minutes drive from Buley is Florence Falls.

Florence Falls

There is a lookout close to the car park where you can admire the falls from above, then it’s a downhill walk to access the pool. If you aren’t keen on stairs and hills, then there is a flatter and longer 1k walk option (Shady Creek walk) to the pool. The pool here is much bigger than those at Buley, so you can have a proper swim and like Maguk, swim right under the falls.

People swimming in a pool at the bottom of Florence Falls in Litchfield National Park

Tolmer Falls

You can’t swim at the next stop, Tolmer Falls, but it’s easily one of the most spectacular falls in the park. We admired the falls from the viewing platform, but you can also take the 16km Tolmer Falls loop walk. As we were there mid-morning and it was already extremely hot we decided against taking the walk.

A tall and narrow waterfall

Wangi Falls

Drive 12 minutes west to Wangi Falls. These falls have a huge pool at the bottom and manicured lawns at the entrance, making it the perfect place for your picnic lunch. There is also a kiosk selling food if you didn’t bring a picnic.

tours kakadu and litchfield

There is a tiny little rock pool within the rock face that you can climb up and relax in, or otherwise just enjoy swimming in the vast pool. Wangi Falls is often closed for swimming between October and March, however we were there in November and it was open.

Wangi Falls has a hidden rockpool

After a relaxing lunch and swim, get back on the road and drive back to Darwin (approx. 1 hour 40).

We arrived back in Darwin late afternoon, checked into our accommodation and set out the explore the city on our final night.

Where to stay in Darwin?

There is lots of accommodation in Darwin, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding somewhere great to stay. I recommend basing yourself close to the Waterfront Precinct as there are lots of nice restaurants there, plus the lagoon and wave pool. Mitchell Street also has lots of good restaurants.

Darwin Hostel is located in the CBD and has an outdoor swimming pool and free private parking. Rooms have air conditioning and free wifi. Dorms from $26 per night.

Darwin City Hotel has en-suite rooms and self-contained apartments with full kitchens and laundry facilities. There is a swimming pool, spa and fitness centre. Parking is available for an additional fee. It’s a really great budget option with rooms from $80 AUD per night and apartments from $169 per night.

Palms City Resort is located on the Esplanade and is surrounded by tropical gardens. All rooms are air-conditioned and there is a landscaped pool. A great option if you want resort-style accommodation but still want to be within walking distance from the bars and restaurants. Rooms from $100 AUD.

The Cavenagh is a central hotel with a swimming pool, bar and restaurant and air-conditioned rooms in the CBD. Double rooms from $107 per night.

Mid Range/Luxury

We stayed at the Hilton Darwin , which has a fantastic location on Mitchell Street and a short walk from the Esplanade. The rooms are lovely with huge bathrooms with a bathtub. Double rooms from $205 AUD per night.

Vibe Hotel is set right on the waterfront with views of the ocean and wave pool. This is such a great location for bars and restaurants, and you’ve got the option of the hotel pool or the Darwin lagoon and wave pool. Rooms from $200 AUD.

An Evening in Darwin

Once you’ve checked in, make your way to the esplanade for a walk along the waterfront and continue along until you reach the waterfront precinct. If you’re lucky you’ll be treated to colourful Darwin sunset. Depending on what time you’re there, you can enjoy a dip in the wave pool or the saltwater lagoon too.

A path next to the ocean

There are lots of great places to eat at the waterfront precinct. We had a delicious meal at Chow, a South-East Asian restaurant (although I have to say the laksa wasn’t as good as at the Parap markets!). Snapper Rocks is another great spot and does some delicious cocktails.

The waterfront precinct in Darwin lit up with fairy lights

If you happen to be in Darwin on Sunday between late April and October, then instead go to Mindil Beach Sunset Markets for a delicious range of food stalls, as well as arts and crafts for sale. The markets run from 4pm – 9pm.

Head back to your hotel for your departure the next day. Instead of flying back to Sydney, we took the Ghan, a luxury sleeper train that travels through the centre of Australia down to Adelaide, which I highly recommend. You could also hire a car and drive through the red centre to Uluru and Alice Springs.

I can’t wait to go back to the Northern Territory, it has such an incredible feeling about it, and the delicious food and insane scenery is a massive bonus.

You need at least 3 days to see the park properly, more if time will allow.

Kakadu is 240 kilometres east of Darwin and covers almost 20,000 square kilometres

Many of the roads (including roads to some of the waterfalls) require a 4WD so it’s recommended.

Kakadu National Park is home to saltwater crocodiles which are very dangerous. Only swim in designated swimming areas and check signage for updates.

The entry fee for Kakadu National Park is $25 per person over 16 years of age. The entry pass is valid for 7 days and can be purchased online or at visitor centres in Kakadu and Katherine.

The dry season (May – September) is considered the best time for travel in Kakadu National Park. The weather is cooler and most of the road will be open.

Saltwater crocodiles live in Litchfield National Park. Check signs and advice before swimming.

There are lots of great places to swim in Litchfield National Park including Florence Falls, Buley Rockhole, Wangi Falls, Walker Creek, Tjaynera Falls and Surprise Creek Falls

There are sealed roads leading into Litchfield National Park and the main attractions are easily accessible without a 4WD.

Litchfield National Park contains several types of typical Top End habitats including lush monsoon forests, termite mounds, unusual rock formations, waterfalls and cascades. The park encloses much of the spectacular Table top Range, which is a wide sandstone plateau mostly surrounded by cliffs. During the green season four major waterfalls thunder from the cliffs to tropical rock pools many metres below. During the dry season, the waterfalls flow more gently, making the waterholes the perfect spot for a cool dip. The Park’s traditional owners are the Wagait Aboriginal people, many of whom live in the area.

We begin our Litchfield National Park Tour travelling down the Stuart Highway via the township of Batchelor to Litchfield National Park where we will visit the main falls. First stop is Florence Falls, where you have the opportunity for a scenic and interpretive bush and monsoon vine forest walk. There is also the chance for a swim by making your way down the stairs to the plunge pool below. Travel on to Tolmer Falls for a magnificent view of the water cascading down to the deep waterhole at the base of the falls. Finally we visit Wangi Falls, with its large crystal clear pool, another relaxing spot for a swim. On the way back to Darwin we make a stop in at Howard Spring Nature Park, where you will have the chance to feed the Barramundi & Turtles. A great day for taking many fascinating photos, including the amazing stand of termite mounds. Lunch is included today.

Fitness Requirements: Good level of fitness is required to complete the walk to Florence Falls Plunge Pool.

What to bring: water bottle, hat, sunscreen and camera, swimwear, towel & comfortable walking shoes.
