Must-Sees - India and Sri Lanka

Although Sri Lanka is often considered to be neighbouring India 's "teardrop", it is an Indian Ocean gem promising much tranquillity. As for its neighbour, India is best explored through authentic and exotic experiences . Taking in India from the west to the east coast is always a delight.

Must-Sees - India and Sri Lanka

The Essentials - India and Sri Lanka

Customs, dietary habits, basic vocabulary... Here is some useful information to prepare you for a trip to India or Sri Lanka !

The Essentials - India and Sri Lanka

Be charmed by the Taj Mahal, Agra - India

With its beautifully refined Mughal architecture and clever blend of Iranian, Islamic, Ottoman and Indian influences, the Taj Mahal is simply unmissable if you are visiting India. This mausoleum considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World and classed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is a monument to love : a homage by Emperor Shah Jahan to his dead consort, Mumtaz Mahal. Constructed in 1648, it is a like a beautifully carved jewel reigning over the surrounding perfectly manicured lawns. The sight is almost surreal.

Explore the markets of Mumbai, Maharashtra - India

Explore the markets of Mumbai, Maharashtra - India

There is no better way to gauge a city's pulse than to wander around its markets, and Mumbai boasts many. Go to the Chor Bazaar to discover a whole range of items: telephones, toasters, gramophones, suitcases, Super 8 cameras, porcelain, statues, shoes, dumbbells, musical instruments, wooden toys, jewellery... With everything from small household appliances to antiques, you could spend hours browsing the stalls looking for the perfect piece. Another market, another feel: Crawford Market is one of the city's most famous. It is held in a Victorian-style building and is where the fabric sellers gather: colour guaranteed. Finally, you will be surprised to come across delivery drivers transporting lunchboxes by bike or with a hand cart. These are the dabbawalas . Each day, 4,000 of them collect home-made little meals from over 100,000 kitchens in the city's suburbs and deliver them to offices. 200,000 lunchboxes are distributed this way daily! The tradition has been established for 125 years.

Come face to face with different civilisations in Kochi, Kerala - India

Come face to face with different civilisations in Kochi, Kerala - India

This is a city where the past is still shaping its many faces . Kochi, the main city in Kerala, is an unmissable stop if you're travelling the west coast of India . Visitors love the diverse cultural influences which can still be seen everywhere in the city today. The big nets by the water? Dipping nets introduced by the Chinese in the 13th century. Places of worship? There is the Paradesi Synagogue : the oldest still operating in the Commonwealth. You can also visit the Church of St Francis , which is deemed the oldest European church in India. The Phoenicians, Greeks, Arabs and Romans all passed through Kochi at various times back when it was already a major commercial port and the price of pepper was the same as that of gold. The Portuguese (Vasco da Gama landed here 500 years ago), the Dutch and the English also made their mark on the city. Colonial buildings and local cuisine still reflect this melting pot of influences today.

Sail through the backwaters of Alleppey, Kerala - India

Sail through the backwaters of Alleppey, Kerala - India

The backwaters are a network of canals, rivers and lakes that link up coastal and inland areas to the south of Kochi to Allepey (also known as Alappuzha). Having served as transportation routes for goods and crops for centuries, the canals are now used for tourist river cruises lasting anything from a few hours to two days on board traditional kettuvallam crafts. These boats are made from natural materials like bamboo and coconut timber and their on-board equipment is solar-powered. Sailing through this tropical scenery made up of vast expanses of rice fields and lush vegetation adds to India's general sense of exoticism. As you go along, this feeling will only increase as you pass villagers doing their washing, buffalo drinking...

Get away from it all in Goa with cultural influences and idyllic beaches - India

Get away from it all in Goa with cultural influences and idyllic beaches - India

A Portuguese colony until 1961, Goa has its own special history that is especially reflected in its cultural heritage . The Basilica of Bom Jesus (home to the tomb of St Francis Xavier), Se Cathedral, St Cajetan Church, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church and St Augustine's Tower are all architectural gems dating from the 16th century and are particularly well-preserved. Goa's convents and churches are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Yet, Goa is also known for relaxation thanks to this little state's superb beaches that cover 100 kilometres of coastline. Among them, Palolem Beach and Fatrade Beach are especially worth a detour with their white sands that seem to melt into the Arabian Sea.

Off the beaten track, Vaikom is a peaceful little place that provides the chance for an authentic Kerala experience. It's also one of the oldest villages in the region. When visiting Vaikom, travellers are given a traditional welcome; can chat to families and visit their homes. Walk around Galle, a former colonial port - Sri Lanka

Walk around Galle, a former colonial port - Sri Lanka

Today, Galle is a lovely seaside city. Its lighthouse, ramparts and historic centre with little white-walled alleys make it peaceful haven . You could almost forget that the city used to be the country's main port when the Portuguese established their trading post here and started building fortifications at the start of the 16th century. With the arrival of the Dutch in 1640, the city grew again, becoming an unmissable stop on the spice and gemstone route. In 1815, the British seized Ceylon and re-established the heart of power in Colombo. A far cry from its former hustle and bustle, and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Galle still reflects its colonial past - something that delights visitors.

Colombo reflects all the religions and cultures that have been mingling here for centuries. Buddhist and Hindu temples, churches, mosques and monuments from the colonial period can all be found here in the country's economic capital. Don't miss Gangaramaya Temple , built at the end of the 19th century, in the middle of Beira Lake . A place of worship attended by many Buddhists, the temple also attracts curious visitors who come to admire the various objects, offerings that have accumulated over time, Buddha and lion statues, and golden decoration. In the middle of the temple stands the important hundred-year old Bodhi Tree : Buddha is said to have achieved enlightenment (bodhi) under a tree like this.

Sri Lanka has no fewer than eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Among them, Dambulla , Pollonnaruwa and Sigiriya in the heart of the Sri Lankan cultural triangle reflect the country's history and the fates of its kings. The Dambulla Golden Temple , with its gold Buddha and 80 painted caves covering 2,000 m², was used as a refuge by Raja Vaṭṭagāmaṇī Abhaya in 104BC. Formerly the Sri Lankan capital in the 11th century, Pollonnaruwa has a succession of priceless archaeological remains, including major temples, and represents the extraordinary way in which Buddhism spread through the country. Located 180 metres up on Lion Rock, Sigiriya was King Kashyapa's withdrawal capital at the end of the 5th century. The climb and the treasures concealed in the different cavities are exceptional.

Dos. Eating with your fingers is common in India and Sri Lanka. However, only the right hand is used as the left hand is seen as unclean. Don'ts. Touching monks is forbidden and women are judged more harshly for it. Before taking photos, it's best to ask permission. Taking images of or turning your back on a Buddha are considered disrespectful.

Unique features

While in Western countries meal home delivery services are booming, a similar system has existed for 125 years in Mumbai, India. These are known as dabbawalas : experienced delivery people who safely carry city workers' lunches. Each day, they collect lunchboxes from 200,000 clients , filling them with home-made dishes to take them to their owners on time. The whole system is based on trust and works well: in one year, just 400 late and missing deliveries were recorded.

In the spotlight

2019 marked 150 years since Gandhi 's birth: an occasion to highlight the khadi fabric of which the Kochi region in India is proud. Rather than simply being a cotton, silk or wool fabric, it symbolises the philosophy of the leader of the non-violent fight against colonisation. Mahatma Gandhi convinced his compatriots to wear the khadi, which was handwoven in local villages using Indian raw materials, rather than buy the expensive clothes sold by the British.

Books. The Village in the Jungle (1913) by Leonard Woolf stands out among the works written during the British colonial era as the perspective is that of a local rather than a colonist. We discover the hard life lived by Silindu and his two daughters in an isolated village in the Sri Lankan jungle as they struggle to survive in the face of bad luck and human greed.

Music. Sri Lankan cellist Rohan de Saram is famous worldwide for his interpretations of classical and contemporary works from the East and West.

Film. The winner of a Cannes Palme d'Or in 2015, Dheepan directed by Jacques Audiard takes the audience in the footsteps of a Tamil Tiger fleeing Sri Lanka to seek asylum in France. Alongside the violence of civil war combat, the film evokes that of certain Paris suburbs.

T20 World Cup: Anrich Nortje shines as South Africa cruise to commanding win over Sri Lanka

N EW DELHI: Anrich Nortje dismantled Sri Lanka with career-best figures of 4/7 as South Africa leveraged the available bounce to secure a six-wicket victory in their T20 World Cup opener on Monday.

At a venue where India is set to play three of their four Group A league matches, Sri Lanka's decision to bat first backfired spectacularly.

Nortje, along with Kagiso Rabada (2/21) and Keshav Maharaj (2/22), led a dominant bowling performance that saw Sri Lanka collapse for 77 in 19.1 overs, marking their lowest T20 total.

However, it wasn't an easy chase for South Africa in the tricky conditions at Nassau Stadium. The Proteas faced a challenging start as Sri Lanka reduced them to 27/2 inside the powerplay.

Sri Lankan wrist spinner Wanindu Hasaranga spearheaded their bowling effort with figures of 2/17 from three overs, claiming the wickets of Quinton de Kock (20) and Tristan Stubbs (13) in consecutive overs.

Despite this, the lack of scoreboard pressure allowed South Africa to reach the target in 16.2 overs, significantly boosting their net run rate.

South Africa now leads the Group D standings with two points and a net run rate of 1.048. The group also includes Bangladesh, Nepal, and the Netherlands.

The in-form Heinrich Klaasen effectively ended the contest in the 15th over by smashing Hasaranga for a massive six over long-on, followed by a straight boundary for a total of 11 runs.

Nuwan Thushara struck first for Sri Lanka in the second over, drawing an outside edge from Reeza Hendricks with an outswinger.

Angelo Mathews gave Aiden Markram a tough time, even hitting the South African skipper awkwardly in the abdomen, requiring medical attention. Markram broke the tension with a spectacular six through covers but was dismissed in the next over by Dasun Shanaka, with Kamindu Mendis pulling off a stunning catch at slip.

Nortje bowled with pace and precision, surpassing his previous best T20 figures of 4/10.

Kagiso Rabada returned with 2/21, while wily left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj thrived in the conditions, finishing with 2/22.

The drop-in pitch at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium proved to be a nightmare for the Sri Lankan batters, who struggled to time the ball, further hindered by a slow outfield.

The Proteas' attack, however, thrived in the friendly conditions, starting with a first-ball wicket for Ottneil Baartman, who returned impressive figures of 1/9 on his World Cup debut. The rookie pacer hit the deck hard, inducing an edge off Pathum Nissanka (3) from a full delivery that swung away and had some bounce.

Nortje was fast and furious, claiming a wicket in his first over when Kamindu Mendis mistimed a pull, leaving Sri Lanka at 31/2 inside eight overs.

There was also support for spinners, with Maharaj striking twice in successive deliveries to dismiss skipper Wanindu Hasaranga and Sadeera Samarawickrama.

Half of the Sri Lankan side was back in the pavilion at the midway mark, with Nortje taking his second wicket as Kusal Mendis mistimed a pull.

Veteran Angelo Mathews, the most comfortable Sri Lankan batter, managed 16 runs from 16 balls before Nortje dismissed him for his fourth wicket.

A run-out of Nuwan Thushara concluded Sri Lanka's innings in 19.1 overs.

Colombo Sri Lanka Port Guide

Colombo is the beating commercial heart of Sri Lanka located on the coast of the Indian Ocean. Whether you’re exploring the nearby town of Galle, which features colonial Portuguese architecture and a green space for sports and community fun, or you venture beyond the city to see an elephant orphanage, your Sri Lanka cruise experience is bound to be unlike anywhere else you’ve ever visited on cruise to Sri Lanka . It’s also home to important temples like the beautiful and historic Gangaramaya Temple, which is one of Colombo’s oldest Buddhist temples.

With a population of nearly one million people, Colombo isn’t showing any signs of slowing down soon. The city continues to improve upon its attractions and offer new sights, smells, and immersive experiences to every type of traveler. Colombo takes travelers out of their comfort zones. Try adventurous street foods like the Sri Lankan hopper, local wood apples, and all sorts of roti during your (too-short) time in Colombo.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to colombo, galle face green.

An oasis in the middle of the city, the urban park Galle Face Green features a long promenade and plenty of street vendors to keep you occupied as you walk. Many locals come here to watch the sunset along the waterfront, play sports, or set up a picnic.

Old Colombo Lighthouse

On your Sri Lanka cruise, don’t miss the Old Colombo Lighthouse, which features a still-operating clock tower. It’s a must-see piece of Colombo history on any self-guided city tour. Stand at the base of the lighthouse and admire the Indian Ocean, which stretches out for an impossible length right before your eyes.

National Museum

The largest museum in Sri Lanka happens to be one of its best attractions for visitors on a Sri Lanka cruise. The exhibits are dedicated to sharing Sri Lankan history, heritage, art, and artifacts with the world. Housed in a British colonial-style building, the museum’s exhibits also outline the effects of British, Dutch, and Portuguese imperialism on the city. There is a cafe to rest and get a drink when you’re done exploring the exhibits.

Top things to do in colombo, day trip to pinnawala elephant orphanage.

This elephant orphanage less than three hours from Colombo is known for its conservation efforts and houses injured elephants who, unfortunately, can never be re-released back into the wild. There are nearly 30 acres of forest and green space for the elephants to roam. Remember to respect these creatures and their space as you visit.

Explore Colombo’s Biggest Park

When you crave a little time away from the city while still in the middle of Colombo, head to Viharamahadevi Park, which is home to springtime blooming and summertime relaxation. It’s a free park that even has a seated Buddha statue for moments of reflection and quiet.

Shop at Pettah Market

For one of the best glimpses of the chaos and fun of daily life in Colombo, there’s the exhilarating Pettah Market. At Colombo’s biggest and most famous market, locals hunt for fresh, high-quality produce. Here you’ll stumble upon all the regional foods that can only be tried in Sri Lanka. Visit in the morning to beat the heat and crowds of the afternoon.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Colombo Cruise Port

Because Colombo is a coastal city, fishing is a critically important piece of the culinary scene here. Try ambul thiyal, a sour fish curry chock full of cubed and spiced fish, or the local staple dhal curry, which is a curry made with boiled red lentils. You’ll quickly become enamored by kottu roti, a crispy flatbread served with chicken, beef, onions, leek, or cabbage in the ultimate Sri Lankan street food dish. Don’t miss the chance to eat a hopper, the thick Sri Lankan pancake typically made with coconut milk and a hint of sugar. They’re the perfect on-the-go breakfast option for the busy explorer. When you go to Pettah Market, don’t leave without trying the controversial Sri Lankan classic, the wood apple. It’s said to smell like blue cheese but taste uniquely sweet and sour. You’ll have to try one for yourself on your Colombo cruise.

Culture & History of the Colombo Cruise Port

Colombo has been a critically important trade port and city for thousands of years. The harbor location made it a competitive spot that the Dutch, British, and Portuguese all fought for throughout the centuries. The British took control of Sri Lanka from 1815 until the nation’s declaration of independence in 1948. Today, Colombo mixes its colonial history with a modernism all its own.

Cricket and rugby are the main sports that Sri Lankans love to play and watch. Over half of the population identifies as Buddhist. The official languages spoken are Sinhala and Tamil, though you may hear English sometimes spoken in business settings.

Colombo Port Facilities & Location

When your cruise ship docks at the Queen Elizabeth pier, you can walk 15 minutes to the center of Colombo. The port of Colombo is Sri Lanka’s highest volume port for trade, so it’s not solely serving cruise traffic. You can take a complimentary shuttle from your ship to the entrance of the Port of Colombo, where a taxi, tuk tuk, or quick stroll will quickly get you to the heart of town.

Transportation in Colombo

Taxis and tuk tuks are two main forms of getting around in Colombo for tourists, and most travelers to Sri Lanka use taxis for longer distances and tuk tuks for shorter rides. Taxis will pick passengers up from the cruise port as well. You can negotiate with your taxi driver to take you from destination to destination throughout the day, rather than hail a new ride each time you want to travel. There’s a train and bus network running through Colombo, too.

Shopping Near the Colombo Cruise Port

There isn’t much in the way of shopping near the cruise port except some kiosks and souvenir stands near the entrance. If you’re craving a snack of fresh fruit or regional delicacy, head to the famous Pettah Market, where you can experience the buzzing pace of street markets in Colombo for the first time.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Understanding the currency and etiquette is important as you choose your Sri Lanka cruise packages. The official currency in the country is the Sri Lankan rupee (Rs), and currency exchange stations are available along Galle Road and in the airport. The city is also bursting with banks and ATMs, so you’re never too far from one. Bargaining is simply part of the culture here if you’re buying something from a local market, so be prepared to haggle. If you get quoted a price, ask for half and see where the shopkeeper will meet you. Typically, tipping is expected in most industries in Sri Lanka. Restaurants will already include a 10% service charge, but you can feel free to tip additionally if service was excellent. Taxis are very affordable here, so it’s polite to round up to the nearest rupee at the end of your ride.

6 of the best road trips in Sri Lanka

For sparkling beaches, sapphire-blue waves, lilting palm trees, emerald hills and the scent of seafood hanging on the breeze, come to Sri Lanka .

The manageable size of this island nation means you can see everything on a short trip, from brochure-class beaches and elephant-filled national parks to ruined Buddhist stupas (monuments) – particularly if you hire a car and driver.

While some people road-trip around Sri Lanka with a rented motorcycle or scooter, renting a car with a driver is the easiest option. Most drivers speak English and know the ins and outs of driving in the country, including the best roadhouses to stop at for fiery rice and curry .

To see the best of the country with your own wheels, here are our favorite road trips in Sri Lanka.

A diver, wearing a diving suit and aqualung, jumping into the ocean from a boat

1. Colombo to Matara

Best road trip for beach lovers Colombo–Matara; 133 km (83 miles)

This easy excursion south from Colombo follows the path of the coastal railway , linking historic cities with some of Sri Lanka’s most famous beach resorts. You won’t find too much peace and quiet in peak season, but you will find plenty of sun-smooched sand and good places to stay, eat and catch a wave.

Start in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s history-stuffed capital city. Explore temples and markets and fine dining on crab curry, then drift south to the sands of Aluthgama and Bentota , taking time to detour inland to the charming Brief Garden . If you have the budget, this stretch of coast has some of Sri Lanka’s best Ayurvedic spa resorts. Pause for a day or two of water fun in Hikkaduwa , and drop by Ambalangoda to delve into the island’s tradition of  kolam  (masked dances).

It’s back to history in Unesco-listed Galle , with colonial-era streets wrapped around a historic lighthouse and a fortress built by Dutch colonizers. Eat and sleep well in the old center, then link through beachy Unawatuna and surfy Midigama and Weligama, squeezing in a detour to the Handunugoda Tea Estate before wrapping up in the authentically Sri Lankan town of Matara .

Planning tip: If you’ve never surfed in Sri Lanka before , the resort of Hikkaduwa offers an easy introduction to bathtub-warm waters. It’s also a hub for snorkeling and diving, with an inshore reef off the main beach that’s great for families.

An empty road stretching out under open sky at Horton Plains National Park, Central Province, Sri Lanka

2. Colombo to Badulla across the Hill Country

Best road trip for tea lovers Colombo–Ella; 240km (145 miles)

It’s not all about beaches in Sri Lanka. The trip inland from Colombo to the Hill Country is one of Sri Lanka’s most evocative rail journeys, and it’s just as impressive by road. Starting from the capital and taking regular stops to look out over the scenery, trace the A1 highway inland to higher ground and the sacred city of Kandy , home to Sri Lanka’s most revered temple.

Coming with a car and driver makes it easy to visit nearby temples and gardens and the Ceylon Tea Museum  before heading to serious tea country. Take the highland road to Nuwara Eliya through jade-green tea plantations, stopping at estates such as Glenloch to learn about the tea-making process. Check into a colonial-era hotel (we rate the Hill Club ) and take high tea at the Grand .

Roll on via the striking Horton Plains to Haputale , where tea-mogul Sir Thomas Lipton founded his empire. Visit Lipton’s factory at Dambatenne  before looping past more hillside viewpoints to Ella  to book into a local guesthouse and enjoy proper Sri Lankan home-cooking. We leave it up to you whether you snap an Instagram pic of the Nine Arches bridge just outside town.

Planning tip: The Horton Plains are like nowhere else in Sri Lanka – an eerily silent area of high country that stops abruptly at the sheer drop-off of World’s End . Pay the national park fees near Farr Inn and you’re free to explore on foot on designated trails.

Tourists walking at the site of an ancient stupa, a large domed building

3. A circle of ancient cities

Best trip for history  Anuradhapura–Kandy, 180km (112 miles)

The green plains of central Sri Lanka couldn’t be further from the sun-and-sand image of the coast. Here you’ll find the ruins of Sri Lanka’s ancient Buddhist kingdoms spilling out from forests that teem with bee-eaters and hornbills.

Start in Anuradhapura , where two-millennia-old brick stupas the size of aircraft hangers are still sites of daily worship. Pay your respects at Sri Maha Bodhi , a tree propagated from the very tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, and head on to the fascinating monastic complex at Ritigala .

Break from the ruins at elephant-thronged Minneriya National Park , then dive back in again at Polonnaruwa , home to some of Sri Lanka’s most impressive temples, statues and ruins. Slingshot west via Sigiriya , whose rocky outcrop is crowned by the ruined citadel palace of King Kasyapa, reached via a vertiginous stairway.

Roll south to Dambulla , where the dusty brickwork is replaced by cave temples painted in vivid primary colors. Bring the journey up to date with one last stop at Kandy, where the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is still the beating heart of modern Sri Lankan Buddhism.

Planning tip: Try to time your visit to Anuradhapura to coincide with a poya day – festivals that mark each passing full moon. Pilgrims flock to the stupas dressed in immaculate white clothes and the brick plinths are wrapped in bolts of colored cloth by devotees.

People watch elephants from a vehicle on safari in a national park

4. The best of Sri Lanka’s national parks

Best for wildlife spotters Mirissa–Arugam Bay; 440km (273 miles)

This cross-country jaunt takes in some of Sri Lanka’s most epic wildlife encounters, visiting national parks both famous and quiet and cruising offshore to meet Sri Lanka’s largest wild animal, the blue whale. Indeed, that’s the first activity before you drive on from the south-coast resort of Mirissa . Feathered friends of all shapes and sizes are the main draws inland at Sinharaja Forest Reserve , and they’re best encountered on foot with a local guide.

Roll east to meet elephants at Uda Walawe National Park (in more peaceful surroundings than at crowded Yala National Park), then return to the coast for bird encounters amid dunes and lagoons at Bundala National Park . You’ll need to loop inland to reach Kumana National Park – a much easier journey with a car and driver than by public transport – where you stand a good chance of a liaison with a leopard. Finish up on the beach at Arugam Bay for some surfing downtime.

Planning tip: Different seasons bring different wildlife experiences. Traveling in November brings decent chances of spotting whales, elephants and leopards, but the best time for elephant spotting is from July to October when pachyderms gather in great herds.

5. Exploring Sri Lanka’s east coast

Best road trip for escaping the crowds Arugam Bay–Trincomalee; 260km (162 miles)

Things are quieter on Sri Lanka’s east coast, and it’s dry during the island’s May-to-August low season, making this a great trip for travelers on a budget. En route, you can stop at laid-back surf hubs and historic towns that feel more authentically Sri Lankan than the resorts in the south and west. Start with a wave at Arugam Bay, one of the island’s most relaxing surfing spots. Stop for a day to explore less-visited temples and birding spots on the lagoons around Pottuvil.

Moving north up the coast, you’ll cross the Gal Oya river (follow it inland for wildlife encounters in under-explored Gal Oya National Park) en route to Batticaloa , where you can explore colonial relics, diverse religious sites and fine beaches. Let the coast call you further north toward  Trincomalee , where Dutch and British history nudges up against Tamil culture. Use Trinco as a base for day excursions to the beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli and snorkeling with reef sharks and turtles at Pigeon Island National Park.

6. A taste of the North

Best road trip for Tamil culture Colombo–Jaffna; 600km (373 miles)

Travelers have long overlooked Sri Lanka’s once-troubled north, but with peace prevailing in the island’s Tamil heartland the time is ripe for exploring. Starting from Colombo, drift north through laid-back Negombo  and get your first taste of Tamil architecture at the Madampe Murugan temple. Stop overnight on the peaceful Kalpitiya Peninsula, Sri Lanka’s kite-surfing capital.

Before you enter the Tamil north proper, swing by Wilpattu National Park – one of the island’s more peaceful reserves – then duck onto Mannar Island to admire the baobab trees and get as close to India as you can without leaving Sri Lanka. From here on north, Hindu Tamil culture dominates; look out for vividly painted kovils (Hindu temples) as you follow the A32 north across the lagoon to Jaffna .

In Sri Lanka’s northern capital, richly spiced Tamil food is the order of the day. Feast on crab curry and tour the Dutch-era fort and the pilgrim-thronged courtyards of the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil . This could be the end of the journey, but you could also spend a day or more exploring the quiet beaches and outpost villages of the once war-torn Jaffna Peninsula to see how far Sri Lanka has come since the end of the civil war in 2009.

Tips for driving in Sri Lanka

It’s possible to self-drive a car in Sri Lanka, but most people prefer to leave the driving to someone with experience of local conditions. Hiring a car with a driver is easy, and you’ll get to visit some local food stops you’d probably miss going it alone. Operators such as Ancient Lanka can sort you out with a car and a friendly, experienced driver from US$65 per day. You’ll also be better placed to navigate any fuel shortages on the island, as tour drivers have priority access to fuel.

While motorcycle and scooter rental is not as widespread as in Southeast Asia, it’s easy and inexpensive to arrange along the coast. The roads are generally well maintained, though potholes are common on back lanes and in the hills. Watch out for wandering dogs, chickens and wildlife (including elephants – if you see a jumbo on the road, back away). Beware of speeding trucks and buses, which won’t slow down for something as lowly as a motorcycle. Try to avoid being on the roads after dark, when hazards are harder to spot.

Bangladesh vs Sri lanka T20 world cup 2024 match

Bangladesh will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on Saturday, hoping to recapture form in what is likely the most crucial game for them in the group stage. The match is set to start at 6:30 am (Bangladesh time).

Bangladesh have South Africa, Nepal and Netherlands to tackle after the Sri Lanka fixture. However, failure to win this match will not only leave a dent in mentality going forward but also leave them with a hurdle too big to cross, given that South Africa – the group's strongest contender for the top spot – have already won their game against Sri Lanka.

Although Bangladesh have had sufficient opportunity to acclimatise with weather conditions, the wickets in question remain a wild card. Winning the toss allows teams with the big advantage of putting the opposition into bat in conditions with unknown variables.

On Wednesday, India skipper Rohit Sharma had asked Ireland to bat in New York and reaped the rewards as variable bounce was on offer.

Bangladesh went ahead with their preparations on Wednesday, hoping to tweak whatever areas they could muster before the big match against Sri Lanka. The team had been pegged back by a series defeat against co-hosts USA leading up to the World Cup, and their performance against India in the only warm-up game showed the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led team were still lagging behind in mentality necessary to thrive in a global event.

There have been criticisms back home and especially on social media platforms. A video from covering media in the USA showed ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan joking about their chances of making the second round. The pressure, coupled with the pang of not feeling supported, have also impacted Shakib ahead of a joint-record ninth appearance in the competition.

Along with form troubles, Bangladesh are suffering from injury worries. Chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu informed that injured pacer Shoriful Islam is still in recovery, with an assessment due on June 9. The speedster injured his bowling hand and is all but certain to miss Bangladesh's World Cup opener.

The importance of the game was also playing intoShoriful's prospects of participating in the World Cup. "We are carrying a pacer in Hasan Mahmud [reserve]. We are interested in getting back Shoriful, but how far we can make it into the tournament is an issue. Our performance is a matter as well since by then we will have played one game, and we can make a decision [based on result] afterwards."

On a positive note, the Tigers are hopeful of Taskin Ahmed's return from injury. "From what we can expect, given the reaction after Taskin bowled today, barring any further injury troubles, he will be able to play against Sri Lanka," Lipu informed further.

"The support staff are trying to get batters back in form. Obviously, the best possible combination will be picked since we are getting Taskin back, which will somewhat make up for the loss of Shoriful," he added.

Bangladesh will be hoping that their batters come into some form in this crucial fixture while Sri Lanka search for form, having been bundled out cheaply in their previous outing.

*Bangladesh are yet to register a win against familiar foes Sri Lanka in T20 World Cup. The Tigers lost both their encounters with the Lankans in the tournament -- by 64 runs in Johannesburg in 2007 and by five wickets in Sharjah in 2021.

*Bangladesh were bundled out for 83 runs in their 2007 T20 World Cup group encounter against Sri Lanka. This is the second-lowest collection for Bangladesh in the mega event and their lowest-ever in T20Is against Sri Lanka.

*Shakib Al Hasan, who scored 18 runs and scalped one wicket in that game against Sri Lanka in 2007, is the only survivor from that game 17 years ago.

*Bangladesh also do not boast an inspiring head-to-head record against the Lankans in T20Is, with the Tigers winning only five and losing 11 of the 16 matches so far.

*Sri Lanka skipper Wanindu Hasaranga (106 wickets in 66 matches) needs two more wickets to surpass Lasith Malinga (107 wickets in 84 games) to become his country's highest wicket-taker in T20Is.

  • Both teams will aim for a winning start

Bangladesh will start their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign as they take on Asian rivals Sri Lanka in Match 15 of the T20 World Cup 2024 on Friday, June 7 (Saturday, June 8) at Grand Prairie Stadium, Dallas. The two teams have been involved in several memorable encounters in recent times and the upcoming fixture is expected to be no different.

The two sides were recently involved in an intense three-match T20I series in the lead up to the World Cup where Sri Lanka emerged victorious by 2-1. However, both sides have been equally matched in the past few years and have treated the fans with many intense matches.

Sri Lanka are coming into the game after losing their opening fixture against South Africa where they were bundled out for just 77. The Island nation had a collective batting failure where no batter stood up to the task against a formidable pace attack of South Africa. The Wanindu Hasaranga-led side will look to put up a better show in their second game.
