In Korea, there are enormous networks of airlines, bus routes, ferry services, trains, and highways that travel the entire nation. One of the best public transportation networks in the world, with trains that run cleanly and on time, is found in Seoul. Passes that work on trains or subways are available in cities like Seoul and Busan. The most effective and convenient way to navigate huge cities is by using the subway system. The systems in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, and Daejeon are all unique.

All You Need to Know About Trains in Korea

A few different types of trains or train systems operate in the whole of Korea. Based on their speed and the amenities they provide, Korean trains are divided into different categories. Train travel between cities in Korea is among the most practical options. The railroad rarely experiences traffic variations, unlike buses, which makes it possible for passengers to make precise travel arrangements and arrive at their destinations on time.

Types of Trains in South Korea

Based on their speed and the amenities they provide, Korean trains are divided into different categories. Express trains KTX and KTX-Sancheon, regular trains ITX-Saemaeul and Mugunghwa, and KORAIL tourist trains are also included in the categories. The type of train and distance of the trip determine ticket prices. Gyeongbu Line and Honam Line are the two main railway lines, but there are also the Jeolla and Gyeongjeon Lines, which go all the way to Yeosu and Changwon on the southern coast.

There are also many options to choose from, like foreigners, so they can travel for a few days by purchasing the ticket once. They can think of purchasing the KORAIL Pass, an exclusive rail pass that permits unlimited usage of all trains, including the KTX, for a predetermined number of days, providing an affordable method to travel around Korea.

Guide to Trains in Korea

Up to a month before the departure, you can buy train tickets online or at any station. Both online and physical ticket sales are quite easy to complete, and both offer English services as needed. But for local travel, you can buy the ticket on the same day and travel; buying before is applicable only for planned trips. You can buy Korail tickets on its own website, whereas SRT has a different website for booking online tickets. If the cashier does not understand English, kindly use the ticket app and get your tickets at the ticket booth.

In major cities, you will have ticket machines with the English language as an option, but in some stations along the countryside, you won’t have that option. So, it is better to book tickets online before your travels. It is convenient as you can check the prices, times, and dates of different train routes. The ticket shows the exact platform, seat no, and train arrival time. You should be on time as the train arrives at the exact time mentioned and departs at the mentioned time on the ticket. You can go to the mentioned platform and wait for the train to arrive. You can choose any type of train system based on your convenience.

south korea tourist trains

Boarding a train is not as difficult as you think. At each platform, there will be a digital sign showing the train and its arrival time, as well as the platform number and your destination. There will also be an English signboard, so you don’t need to worry about not catching your train. You will know exactly when to board the train, and that is when you see a red light blinking on the signboard, which means the train has arrived, and you can board it; the train won’t be waiting for all the passengers to board it. Once it is time to leave, the train will leave. You should be careful while boarding the train because there will be divisions in the middle to different destinations.

You need to have a copy of the train ticket with you just in case of an emergency. The train station does not have many amenities other than a small vending machine or something like that. So, if you are traveling far away, make sure to stop by a store before reaching the train station. Make sure you are following the train path if you are a tourist so as to not miss your destination. And you need to get down as soon as the train arrives at your destination because the trains will be fast to wind up and leave for the next station.

This train travel guide will make sure your train journey is safe and enjoyable.

How to Travel by Train in Korea

Our handy guide to getting around on Korea's main trains

' src=

If you are planning a trip to South Korea and want to travel outside of Seoul, you will likely be hopping aboard Korea’s national railway. Like almost everything in Korea, the trains are unbelievably convenient, reliable, and efficient. Here is a concise guide to the main types of Korean trains, how to book tickets, and what to expect when you travel by train in Korea. It’s not nearly as scary as you might think after watching Train to Busan — I promise!

Main Types of Trains in Korea

The national railway in Korea is operated by Korail. This includes several types of train: KTX, ITX-Saemaeul, Mugunghwa, Nuriro, Airport Express trains, and the ITX Cheong-Chun. Korail also operates several sightseeing trains and metropolitan subway services in Seoul and Busan. There is also the SRT (Super Rapid Train) which is not operated by Korail, but is still very easy for tourists to access. The four main types of train you are likely to travel on as a tourist are the KTX, SRT, ITX-Saemaeul, or Mugunghwa.

Korea KTX Train

KTX (Korea Train eXpress) is the most well-known of these trains and a good option for tourists. This is a high speed service which takes passengers to most major cities in the country. The KTX can take passengers from Seoul to Busan in roughly 2 hours 45 minutes, Seoul to Daejeon in 1 hour, and Seoul to Suwon in 30 minutes.

This is the most expensive option , with the journey from Seoul to Busan costing 56,800 KRW. Due to its high speed, regular departures, and good-connectivity, the KTX is great for travelers who want to move quickly and efficiently, and don’t mind spending a little more money for these benefits.

At the beginning of 2021, Korail launched a new generation of KTX called KTX-Eum (KTX-이음). Completely developed with Korean technologies, this eco-friendly electric multiple unit (EMU) trains should help shorten travel time around South Korea.

Korean SRT train

The SRT offers a cheaper and slightly faster service than the KTX . However, as they depart from Suseo, in the southeast of Seoul, they are less well-known. These trains are well-connected and can take passengers across the country as far as Mokpo and Busan.

The journey from Seoul (Suseo) to Busan costs 51,800 KRW for a standard adult ticket and takes around 2 hours 30 minutes. The trains are as – if not more – comfortable than the KTX and are usually less busy. Although the SRT is not operated by Korail, tickets can still be purchased easily and the trains are very accessible for foreign travelers.

ITX-Saemaeul (ITX-새마을호)

Korea ITX train

Next up is the ITX-Saemaeul, or Intercity Train eXpress. The ITX is the second highest class of train after the KTX. These trains operate slower than the KTX because it stops at more stations . This can be more convenient for travelers who want to visit smaller, more specific locations. The ITX is still a very comfortable option — I would say it’s more comfortable than the KTX, as there is more leg room, and if you are travelling with others you can turn your seats around to make groups of four.

Compared to the KTX, the journey from Seoul to Busan takes around 3.5 hours and costs 42,600 KRW. Although the travel time is longer than KTX, it is an appropriate option for travelers who want a more economical option and don’t mind a longer journey.

In 2012, the ITX-Cheongchun was built to connect Seoul and Chuncheon. This train line allows passengers easy access to tourist destinations such as Nami Island, Petite France, and several drama filming locations which are popular with its visitors.

Mugunghwa (무궁화호)

Korea Mugunghwa train

The third and oldest type of train is the Mugunghwa. These trains are much cheaper than the KTX and ITX , and they stop at far more stations . Mugunghwa trains are ideal for shorter journeys and for people visiting niche destinations. You can take cross-country journeys on this train, but it is not as comfortable as the other classes of train, and can be extremely bumpy.

The journey from Seoul to Busan takes approximately 4.5 hours and only costs 28,600 KRW – almost half the price of the same journey on the KTX! If you have a lot of time to spare for travelling and really want to save money, this would be a good option.

Mugunghwa trains have reserved seats, unreserved seats, and standing areas. I would recommend using this train for journeys under 2 hours as it can get uncomfortable, but if you are the type of traveler who can sleep anywhere, why not take advantage of this cheaper train!

Korean Trains Schedule

Four options for ‘seoul to busan’: how long, how much, how comfortable .

Travel time: ~ 2 hours 45 minutes Price: ~ 60,000 KRW Comfort: Very comfortable!

Travel time: ~ 2 hours 24 minutes Price: ~ 52,000 KRW Comfort: Very comfortable (and even more peaceful than KTX!)

Travel time: ~ 3.5 hours Price: ~ 43,000 KRW Comfort: Very comfortable!

Travel time: ~ 4.5 hours Price: 27,000 KRW Comfort: Less comfortable

How to Purchase Korean Train Tickets

You can purchase train tickets online or at any station up to a month before the departure date. Purchasing tickets online or offline is incredibly simple and both have English services available, if required.

Korail Tickets Booking Online

To book tickets online, you can visit Korail’s website . The SRT has its own booking website, here . Simply select the desired route, departure date, and number of passengers. If you want to find a cheaper route, check out the transfer routes. Transferring in Korean train stations is incredibly easy as trains almost always arrive and depart on schedule. Trains will usually depart at the exact minute stated on your ticket, so don’t be late!

You need to input some basic personal information, bank details, and then after confirmation of your booking you will receive seat reservation by email. I would recommend taking this to the ticket office (along with your bank card) and getting it issued just as a precaution. I have never had a train ticket checked in Korea, but this can come in handy in case someone else is sitting in your seat, or you can’t rely on technology to guide you to your seat.

You can also purchase your ticket through the application Korail Talk (코레일톡) for the KTX, ITX, and Mugunghwa trains ( Android | iOS ). Easy to use you just have to search trains by dates, hours and choose the one that you want. After that, you just have to enter the information about yourself (Name, Gender, Password, Nationality, and Email address). Now you just have to pay with your credit card and enter your Alien Register Card number. Don’t forget about the information that you entered (such as your password) because you will need them in order to look at your ticket online.

Booking at the Station

Seoul Station

Train tickets can just as easily be purchased at any national train station, too. Stop by the train station a few days prior to your departure date, if possible, to purchase a ticket. Some routes sell out around a week or so before departure, so if you have the time to spare I would advise buying in advance.

To purchase tickets in the station, there are Korean and English signs which guide customers to the ticket office. You can also purchase tickets from self service machines which are usually located nearby the ticket office.

Korail Pass

Foreign visitors who will be riding the train frequently in Korea should consider the Korail Pass. This is a great option for tourists who want to travel a lot around Korea in a short period of time. You can find more information about this and purchase the pass on Korail’s website here .

National Holidays

Like any country, it can be difficult to book tickets to travel during national holidays in Korea. This includes Seollal (Lunar New Year, usually around the end of January), Chuseok (late September-early October), Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Especially during Seollal and Chuseok, many Korean people will travel to visit their families. This means tickets will be booked up very quickly, so I would recommend visiting the train station directly or calling the customer service to clarify the date from which you can purchase tickets.

Refunds

If you need to get train tickets refunded, this can be done easily at the ticket office or online through the website or the application. From Monday to Thursday, cancellations until 3 hours before the journey are free but under 3 hours, you will have to pay 10%. However, if you want to refund your ticket from Friday to Sunday and during Holidays, 24 hours before your trip, there will be a small charge of 400 KRW, and from 24 hours to 3 hours before the charge will be a 5% charge of the original train ticket price.

White Day in Korea-valentine's day in korea

Valentine’s Day In Korea: The Loved, The Smitten And The Lonely

If you missed your train, you can also be refunded only at the Ticket Offices of Korail Stations. Under 20 minutes since your train departed, you will pay a 15% fee, between 20 and 60 minutes it will be a 40% fee and over an hour it will be a 70% fee.

Corona Safety Policies

Due to the Covid19, half of the seats should be empty on the train, so the tickets should be sold out more quickly especially during holidays, so be careful to book your ticket in advance. Just like in the subway and buses, wearing a mask is mandatory when taking the train and the staff will be expecting you to avoid eating or drinking during your trip since it requires you to remove it. Outside of those policies, you can find in each station different policies, such as not being able to enter 10 minutes before the platform before your train arrives or staff will ask you to enter slowly and check your temperatures and tickets.

What to Expect on a Train in Korea

So you have your train ticket and you are ready to travel! Here are some final tips and bits of advice to have a great train journey in Korea.

As I said previously, if you booked tickets online, I would still recommend visiting the ticket office before your journey to issue a physical copy. The train crew will usually pass through each car regularly, but don’t check tickets. However, passengers are required to have a copy of their ticket just in case.

Korean train stations are very well sign-posted and easy to navigate around. I would advise getting there early, especially if you are a tourist and aren’t familiar with Korea. Trains in Korea don’t have a great selection of onboard amenities. Most trains have a simple vending machine with water, coffee, and some snacks. If you are taking a long journey, stop by a convenience store before you board. There will most likely be at least one convenience store at the station, or even on the platform, so make sure to stock up.

Korean snacks

Don’t forget, when you are waiting to board, try to stand at the right car for the specific type of train you are taking. I once made the mistake of standing at the area for the KTX — not realizing that different trains obviously have different lengths — when I was actually boarding an ITX train. When the train arrived, it went straight past me and stopped at the other end of the platform. I had to run half way down the platform with an extremely heavy suitcase just to get ON the train — don’t make the same mistake as me!

Follow and respect Korean etiquette as much as you can on the train.  Although there is no designated quiet car on the trains, it is generally expected that you keep your voices down. Try not to be too loud, or you risk the chance of being shushed by another passenger.

Finally, keep an eye on your watch and have your ticket to hand. Especially on the ITX and Mugunghwa, the trains stop very frequently and you don’t want to accidentally miss your station. Sometimes announcements are not made in English on Mugunghwa trains, but if you know your expected arrival time, then the train will almost always arrive without delay.

Most importantly, enjoy your train journey, take in as much of the beautiful Korean countryside as you can, and have an awesome trip!

14 Things To Do In Seoul: Complete Guide To South Korea's Vibrant Capital City

10 most beautiful towns to visit in south korea this fall, these mountains have higher fatality rates than mount everest.

  • South Korea has seen a remarkable increase in international tourism, with over a 400% increase since 2022.
  • The KTX high-speed rail system is an efficient way to travel around the country, providing convenient access to Korean cities and countryside destinations.
  • Fares for riding the KTX vary based on the line, class, and distance traveled, with options for first-class, economy-class, and standing-room-only tickets available. Stations are well-signed and offer a variety of shopping and dining options for travelers.

It's no question that South Korea is experiencing a remarkable tourism comeback after years of travel standstill. In fact, Korean-based online newspaper Aju Daily reports from the Korean Tourism Organization that the country has seen an over 400% increase in international tourism since 2022. While South Korea's capital city, Seoul, is the first logical stop for many international travelers exploring Korea—of course, Seoul's Joseon-era palaces and plethora of interesting tours on Korean culture are a major draw—tourists are eagerly looking to expand their Korean horizons and take trips elsewhere in the country.

Cue the Korea Train Express, fondly known as the KTX, Korea's popular high-speed rail system that connects Seoul with other Korean cities and Korea's countryside. The KTX is by far one of the most efficient ways to move around the country, especially for those quick day trips outside of Seoul or for those harder-to-reach, but very beautiful Korean countryside destinations that travelers want to get to expeditiously.

Seoul blends the best of tradition and the ultra-modern: find out what's with all the hype and everything to do in this bustling metropolis.

KTX: An Overview And How to Ride

KTX began as a high-speed rail line servicing the Seoul to Busan route in 2004 but now services other highly sought-after routes to Korea's countryside like Jeonju, famous for its traditional Korean folk villages and culinary offerings and Gwangju, a rich epicenter for both ancient and modern Korean history.

The KTX doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon either (pardon the pun), with expansions planned and under construction throughout the country as well as speed upgrades that will put some lines of the KTX at speeds of 260mph/420kmph, some of the fastest train speeds in the world .

How Much Does It Cost to Ride the KTX Train?

The KTX's official ticketing website in English Let's Korail is operable, but sort of clunky especially since their translations from Korean to English are a bit clumsy. Korea-based bloggers often recommend using Trip.com as an alternative to Korail.

There's an app associated with Trip.com as well, so tickets can be stored on a phone.

Alternatively, riders can purchase tickets at their station of embarkation. Stations are often equipped with a number of self-serve kiosks with English translation options where travelers can purchase their tickets, especially if there is a language barrier with those at the station selling tickets.

Word of note though: many of these kiosks do not accept international payment cards, so be sure to have ample cash if you're hoping to use one of these machines. If you want to use an international card, or to interact with a real person, then plan to purchase tickets from ticket windows.

Just be prepared that at some of the smaller stations in the countryside, English is not as widely spoken so have a translation app handy for those interactions.

Fares vary based on the line traveled, which class purchased, and distance. There are first-class and economy-class fares, as well as standing-room-only fares; those are the cheapest tickets, but yes, travelers then must stand for the duration of their trip.

Some lines do not offer this as an option, however, so budget accordingly. Here are sample fares from Trip.com for trips a week out from travel:

  • Seoul to Busan : Approx. $66 USD for first-class, $45 USD for economy-class, $30-35 for standing room
  • Seoul to Gwangju : Approx. $52 USD for first-class, $37 USD for economy-class
  • Seoul to Pyeongchang : Approx. $19 USD for first-class, $15 USD for economy-class

What To Expect On The KTX Train

While navigating the station and getting on the train can be a stressful experience, knowing what to expect pre-arrival and etiquette and expectations for the train can make a big difference in feeling comfortable while riding.

The stations that serve the KTX are often large, modern, and clean, and the trains themselves are well-maintained and overall a relaxing experience.

South Korea is wonderful in the Fall, and these ten towns make up some of the best places to see in the country.

What To Expect At The Station

Train stations in Korea (especially Seoul Station in Seoul) are large, maze-like buildings that service intermodal forms of transport from buses to subways to trains. It can be overwhelming at first, but travelers can rest assured that these busy stations are well-signed; just give plenty of time to navigate, especially if traveling with bags!

A huge upside to these massive transport stations is the amazing selection of shopping and restaurants available to travelers. Some folks will even come to the train stations just with the intention of shopping or eating, not for actually riding the train.

Travelers do not have to worry about skipping a meal before heading to the station because there will always be food available at the dumpling restaurant, the convenience store, or a well-stocked vending machine.

Many stations also have luggage storage lockers to make sightseeing for the day or even just exploring around the station easier.

What To Expect On The Train

KTX trains are quite large with many seating options and many carriages, however, hundreds of people use this train to get around the country, so it's often packed. Standing-room-only tickets are not unusual, and it is perfectly fine to sit at an empty seat until the purchaser of that seat comes by, to mitigate congestion in the cars.

Train riders who purchase economy class seats or first-class seats will have an assigned lettered and numbered seat so no battles for first-come, first-served happen on the KTX. Seats are configured in a 2-2 configuration across the aisle, with spots of 4 seats around a table in each carriage.

Conversation is limited on trains, much like the etiquette on the Korean subway so travelers should plan to be respectful and quiet for those sitting around them. Food is permitted on the train, but there is no "cafe car."

Some cars do have vending machines for snacks and limited drink options, but if travelers want something more substantive, then purchasing food at the station is a good idea. Overall, the train is a very comfortable ride, with ample legroom, overhead storage for small pieces of luggage, and a speedy ride time!

The majority of KTX's carriages are not equipped to handle large or oversize pieces of luggage. There are very few places to store larger pieces, and the easiest place to store one's bags is either above the seat or in small luggage racks at the ends of the carriages. Best to travel light on KTX trains!

How to Travel by Train in South Korea Pain-free with KR Pass

' src=

For travelers who are planning on train travel in South Korea, here’s a basic guide to help you make your rail journey in South Korea pain-free with KR Pass.

If you want to step outside Seoul and get to other destinations in South Korea, traveling by train is probably the best option. It’s true that the price of express buses is comparatively lower than that of trains, but the travel times can become very long due to heavy traffic. So if you want your travel plans to be exact and move to destinations on time, taking a train is highly recommended.

Railway Lines in Korea

south korea tourist trains

Train fare depends on train type and distance traveled. There are 4 railway lines in Korea: the Gyeongbu Line , the Honam Line , the  Gyeongjeon Line and the Jeolla   Line .

The Gyeongbu Line  connects Seoul and Busan and the Honam Line  runs from Yongsan Station in Seoul to Mokpo in the southwest.   The Gyeongjeon Line connects Seoul and southeastern part of Korea such as Jinju and Changwon. The Jeolla Line runs across the southwestern part of Korea and its major stops include cities like Jeonju, Namwon, Suncheon, and Yeosu.

What is a KR Pass?

Korean Train Classes

Classes of Korean trains depend on the speed and the amenities offered on board. In Korea, there are  KTX express trains (including KTX-Sancheon), and the non-express Saemaeul , ITX-Saemaeul , ITX-Cheongchun , Mugunghwa , Nuriro, and tourism trains .

1. KTX (Korea Train eXpress)

kr pass

KTX is a high-speed train in Korea that takes less than 3 hours to travel from Seoul to Busan. Although the train fare is relatively expensive, it is fast, safe, and comfortable.

2. ITX (Intercity Train Express)

After KTX is ITX, which are semi-fast trains and currently there are two types: ITX-Cheongchun and ITX-Saemaeul .

3. Saemaeul-ho

south korea tourist trains

Before KTX trains were launched, Saemaeul-ho was the fastest class of trains in South Korea. The Saemaeul train makes more stops than KTX and ITX and it allows the journey from Seoul to Busan possible in less than 5 hours.

4. Mugunghwa-ho

south korea tourist trains

Mugunghwa-ho is the cheapest class of trains in operation today and they are the only trains that stop at many stations where KTX & Saemaeul trains do not serve. However, the speed is very slow and there are more standees than sitting passengers.

5. Nuriro-ho

On this train, you will be able to enjoy the beautiful gorges and valleys of South Korea.

Hi! Very interesting post! We will visit South Korea in April and we are not able to plan our main spot to visit only by train. For example, what is the easiest and time saving route to visit Andong and its Hahoe folk village? Thanks

Hello, please check this link to the Andong Hahoe Folk Village tour from Seoul. https://www.trazy.com/experience/detail/andong-hahoe-folk-village-private-tour For further inquiries, please kindly contact us at [email protected] . Thank you!

Korea is beautiful, I hope I can ride some of these trains before I head back home.

When I first moved here, I didn’t really understand what each train did. This is a great summary for the newbie expats.

We’re glad that it’s helpful to you! 🙂

This is incredibly helpful! I’ve been looking for an introduction to trains for people who are new to Korea and this is perfect. Thanks!

Hi, If I am bringing large luggage suitcase, will there be storage compartments on the ITX-Saemaul or muganghwa train? Thanks.

Hello Cho 🙂 Most of the new trains have luggage racks by the doors inside the train. However, be careful as some old trains may not have a separate rack for large sized luggage.

Hi, is the ITX-Saemaul located in Seoul station? Can I ride it from Seoul station if I’m headed to Busan?

Hi Dylan, Yes, you can take ITX-Saemaul at Seoul Station and head to Busan. It takes about 4.5 hours per way.

Hello, I was about half way through my own guide about transportation in Korea when I started following your blog. Seriously, rarely do you come across such detail and attention to detail as you guys have here. I decided to just reference your general transportation page and scrap my idea. I do have a question though. Any idea when the grey line will be opened (not sure if it is just grey on my map)? I have only seen it in a handful of maps online and can’t seem to find any additional info. Line 4 will join with it at Sunshin Women’s University station which has been under construction for a few years now. The map in the station clearly shows the line going north/south, but no other updates. You got anything?

Thank you very much! We appreciate such a comment a lot :) Yes, we wrote about that new line a couple of years ago: https://kojects.com/2011/07/05/upcoming-lines-light-rail-for-northern-seoul/ It’s an automated light-rail system. The southern start point is Sinseoldong Station (신설동역, Line 1 and Line 2 branch) and the northern end is in Ui-dong. The construction of that line is complete and now they are performing test runs. I don’t know if the opening date is confirmed and official but it seems that the line is going to open in December 2016. We’ll keep you and our readers updated!

Awesome, thanks. I have a friend who just bought a house near this new line so that is good news.

Ukraine war latest: Russia says it is considering nuclear shift - and tells West it is 'playing with fire'; US leads drills after North Korea warhead test

A senior Russian diplomat says Putin is reviewing the country's nuclear doctrine - and warns the West it is "playing with fire". Meanwhile, a Russian navy missile cruiser carries out drills in the Mediterranean. Listen to a Sky News podcast on Putin and North Korea while you scroll.

We're pausing our live coverage of the war in Ukraine for this evening.

Scroll through below to catch up on the latest developments.

Two people have been killed and two more are wounded as a result of Russian shelling in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, an official has said.

Vadym Filashkin, head of the regional military administration, said Russian forces struck the centre of Kurakhove city, killing a woman and a 40-year-old man.

Two injured people were taken to hospital, he said.

He added that the extent of the damage in the attack was being assessed.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban had a seemingly lively chat ahead of a meeting of European leaders in Brussels today.

It's not known what that the two men discussed - but relations between Budapest and Kyiv have become more strained since the Russian invasion in 2022.

Hungary is Russia's closest ally in the EU and Mr Orban has maintained a friendship with Vladimir Putin while criticising the EU's strategy on Ukraine.

In December, Mr Orban blocked a €50bn aid package for Ukraine in a move that frustrated other EU leaders. He lifted the veto several months later.

Two people have been injured in a Russian drone attack on southern Ukraine, an official has said.

The Kherson regional administration said Russian forces launched an attack on the village of Novodmytrivka, leaving a 66-year-old man and 71-year-old woman hurt.

Both have blast injuries and have been taken to hospital for treatment, it said on Telegram.

The US, Israel and Ukraine are all in talks to provide Ukraine with up to eight Patriot air defence systems, according to the Financial Times.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly called for NATO members to send his country the US-made Patriot systems as it battles intensifying Russian attacks.

The FT said the deal would likely involve Israel first sending the systems it plans to retire to the US, before they are handed over to Kyiv.

Sources with knowledge of the negotiations told the paper the outlines of the deal have been discussed between ministers and senior officials from each of the three countries.

Mr Zelenskyy said in May that Kyiv urgently needed at least seven more Patriot missile systems to ward off Russian strikes against its power grid, civilian areas and military targets.

Pictures have emerged this evening of the aftermath of Russia's latest airstrike on the northeastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv.

Emergency services said earlier that five people were injured and buildings were damaged in the attack (see 17.55 post).

Russian forces launched an assault on a new front in Kharkiv in May, after months of fighting focused on the east.

Ukrainian troops have repelled Russian forces from a neighbourhood in the frontline town of Chasiv Yar, a Ukrainian military official has said.

Nazar Voloshin, a spokesman for the Khortytsia operational-strategic group, told the Interfax-Ukraine news agency that Russian forces had been pushed out of the Kanal neighborhood in the east of the town.

Mr Voloshin claimed Moscow's forces were not slowing down in their push to break through in Chasiv Yar, and said two assault operations were ongoing.

"Ukrainian defenders reliably hold the defence in this area and give a decent rebuff to the Russian aggressor," he told the agency.

For context: Chasiv Yar, a strategically-important town in the eastern Donetsk region, has long been a Russian target.

It has been pummelled by Russian air, artillery and drone strikes for months now, as Moscow views the town as a gateway to launch direct offensives against several Ukrainian "fortress cities".

Chasiv Yar had a pre-war population of more than 12,000, but now only a few hundred residents remain.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged EU leaders to make good on their promises to provide his country with military aid after the bloc signed a security agreement underlining its support for Kyiv in the long term.

"Fulfilment of every promise is important, not only in terms of protecting lives but also to destroy the Russian illusion that they will achieve something by war," he said at the summit in Brussels today.

The Ukrainian president thanked countries that have so far promised equipment and arms aid, but pointed out that they were "needed urgently on the battlefield".

He also urged more help on "the urgent things - air defence, that is one".

The EU-Ukraine security agreement entrenches the EU's commitment to help Ukraine in nine areas of security and defence policy - including arms deliveries, military training, defence industry cooperation and demining,

In essence, it encapsulates what the 27-nation bloc has been doing for the country since the start of the war.

But the EU has made a specific commitment to the "predictable, efficient, sustainable and long-term provision of military equipment" for Ukraine.

Kyiv in return has promised to uphold European values and continue on its reform path in preparation to join the EU.

Five people have been injured in Russian airstrikes in Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region, according to emergency services.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine said the strikes hit a residential area of the region, partially destroying one building and damaging others - including a school - as well as cars.

Crews at the scene said five people were hurt.

The windows and gates of the local fire station were also damaged, the emergency service said.

While the apparent gains made by Russia during its spring offensive in Kharkiv were the focus of much of the news coverage of the way in May, a new report indicates any progress made by Vladimir Putin's troops came at a significant cost.

According to UK and other Western intelligence agency sources cited by the New York Times, more than 1,000 Russian soldiers were injured or killed each day last month.

However, the newspaper also cites US officials as saying Moscow is continuing to recruit between 25,000 and 30,000 new soldiers a month - roughly as many as it is losing from the battlefield.

American officials told the outlet that Russia achieved a critical objective of Mr Putin in creating a buffer zone along the border to make it more difficult for the Ukrainians to strike into the country.

But, the Western officials said, this did not threaten Kharkiv and was ultimately stopped by Ukrainian forces.
