*Vaccines offered at Walgreens vary by state, age and health conditions. Talk to your local pharmacist about availability.

What other vaccines should I have before traveling?

It’s important to be up-to-date on routine vaccinations before traveling as well—like Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR), Tetanus, Flu and COVID-19.

"Safety in Travel” is a six-part series focusing on the travel safety tools available in different industries, how they can affect the overall experience, and how travelers can make use of them. If you ever stop by the pharmacy before a trip, you might be grabbing plastic bags for airport security , travel-size toiletries or picking up medication before you leave home.

But pharmacists can do much more than just fill prescriptions: For travelers going abroad, they can provide a range of services, from health consultations before their trip to administering vaccines.

"Pharmacists who have training in travel health will likely be much more up to date (than the average primary care provider), not just on the clinical aspects of some of these specialized vaccines and medications, but also access to information that's very itinerary specific," Dr. Keri Hurley-Kim, an associate clinical professor at the University of California, Irvine School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, told USA TODAY.

What kinds of services can pharmacists provide to travelers?

Pharmacists that offer travel medicine services can provide travelers with consultations before their trip to help them prepare.

They can then administer vaccines, initiate prescriptions and dispense medications, and even order labs, though the scope of what they can offer varies by state. In California, for instance, pharmacists can independently provide any travel-related prescription medications like antimalarial drugs or antibiotics, said Dr. Jeff Goad, a professor of pharmacy practice and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the Chapman University School of Pharmacy.

That may not be the case depending where travelers live, and the types of vaccines pharmacists can give varies, too. "All states allow pharmacists to give vaccines, but not all states allow pharmacists to give all vaccines," he said.

Some large chain pharmacy locations have trained travel health pharmacists, Hurley-Kim said, and independent pharmacies may advertise those services as a specialized part of their business. The International Society of Travel Medicine also maintains a directory of travel clinics , she noted.

When in doubt about what services a pharmacist offers, Goad recommended calling to ask.

Do chain pharmacies offer assistance to travelers?

Walgreens pharmacists, for instance, can help travelers determine what vaccines they may need and can administer doses of polio, typhoid and Japanese  encephalitis  vaccines, among others. Some vaccines may not be available at all stores, according to a spokesperson. The vaccines are also subject to state and age restrictions.

"Walgreens pharmacists are trained via a 3hr CE course about travel health created by the clinical team," the spokesperson said in an email.

Travelers can also find information about Walgreens's services and schedule vaccine appointments via the pharmacy chain's website .

While CVS Pharmacy offers a range of vaccines it does not have a "formal travel health offering," a spokesperson said by email.  MinuteClinic locations do  offer travel health services , however.

What are the other benefits of seeing a pharmacist before traveling?

Pharmacies can also offer convenience. Some stock items that can come in handy during travel, such as bug spray, insect nets or remedies for ailments like traveler's diarrhea, Goad said.

If a trip is coming up soon, travelers may also be able to get into see a pharmacist faster than a primary care doctor, for instance. "Generally, in a pharmacy, you can get an appointment within 48 hours," said Goad. "That's the norm."

When should travelers see a pharmacist before traveling?

Just because travelers can get an appointment quickly doesn't mean they should wait until the last minute.

Hurley-Kim recommended coming in one to two months before a trip, particularly because some vaccines require multiple doses. "Four to eight weeks is a really kind of sweet spot where we know we're probably going to be able to get in all of the vaccines and medications that you need without it being so soon that things may change by the time you go," she said.

Pharmacists can help you determine whether you may need a consultation and other services before travel and will consider some key factors:

►  Where you are going: "For example, a trip to West Africa is a very different trip than to Mexico in terms of the disease risk, the range of diseases, those kinds of things," said Goad.

Hurley-Kim said the vast majority of travel health patients are visiting Africa, Central America, South America and Southeast Asia.

►  Your risk factors:  "If you are an 85 year old with chronic heart disease, versus a 20 year old with no medical problems, you also have a very different trip ahead of you," said Goad.

► What you are doing when you get there: Consider your itinerary, as well. Someone taking a business trip may need to prepare differently than someone planning to climb mountains, for instance.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends travelers be up to date on their routine vaccinations. "If you are not vaccinated, international travel increases your chances of getting and spreading diseases that are not common in the United Sates," the agency said on its website .

Some countries may also require travelers to show proof of certain vaccinations on arrival, such as the yellow fever vaccine , according to the CDC. Travelers can find destination-specific recommendations and requirements on the agency's website .

How much does seeing a pharmacist before travel cost?

The cost of travel health services can vary widely, according to Hurley-Kim. She said a pharmacist will typically charge an appointment fee for the first visit, and she has historically charged around $60, though she offers discounts for groups like students and senior citizens. Health insurance providers are unlikely to cover that cost.

Cruise lines dropped COVID-19 rules: How did that affect cases? We got numbers from the CDC

Routine vaccines, like those for hepatitis A and hepatitis B, that are also commonly used in travel medicine are likely to be covered, she said. Whether specialty vaccines are covered depends on the individual insurance plan.

The price of vaccines ranges depending on the type and how many doses are in a series. The rabies vaccine, which Hurley-Kim said is "kind of infamously expensive," may cost between $300 and $400 per dose and travelers need at least two doses. Others can run between $50 and $200 and may require fewer doses.

Health insurance will generally cover medications provided by pharmacists as part of these services, according to Goad.

Even if you don't think you need to talk to a pharmacist before your trip, you may find it useful. "It never hurts to ask," said Hurley-Kim.

ANN ARBOR, MI – A man who admitted to robbing several pharmacies at gun point before being captured with the help of a decoy pill bottle is headed to prison.

Kristopher Kukola was sentenced to 63 months, or a little more than 5 years, in federal prison, May 29, after pleading guilty to four federal felony charges and admitting to robbing several CVS Pharmacy locations in southeast Michigan in the spring and summer of 2022, court records show.

Another CVS may be coming to Piscataway. Here's where

PISCATAWAY – The township's second CVS is proposed as part of the redevelopment of the Ericsson corporate campus on Hoes Lane.

M&M at Hoes Lane Phase II is scheduled to appear before the township Planning Board on June 26 on a proposal to build the 14,698-square-foot store.

The store, with a drive-thru, is proposed on 2.4 acres at the corner of Ericsson Drive in the southeasterly portion of the Town Center Zone.

The CVS will have frontage on Hoes Lane but access to the site will be from Erricsson Drive.

The other CVS in Piscataway is at 1252 Stelton Road. Neighboring South Plainfield has three CVS locations.

The CVS is part of a proposal by M&M at Hoes Lane Phase II to build 1,101 residential units and 109,000 square feet of commercial space on the former corporate campus.

The developer is proposing 717 multi-family homes, 364 row and stacked townhouses and 21 single-family homes on the 75.6-acre property.

Of the 717 apartments, 121 will be designated as affordable housing units.

The property is located in the township's Towne Center Zone which allows the mixed-used project as well as the proposed number of residential units and commercial space.

M&M, based on Stelton Road, is run by Bridgewater resident Jack Morris and Joseph Marino, two of the most powerful land developers in New Jersey.

Morris owns Edgewood Properties and Marino owns Century 21 Construction.

In 2016, iconectiv, formerly known as Telcordia before it was bought by Ericsson in 2011, announced it was moving to Bridgewater because the company needed room to expand.

The company moved about 500 employees from Hoes Lane to the Somerset Corporate Center at the intersection of routes 22 and 202-206.

Telecordia came to the township decades ago and built the “iconic tower” near the municipal complex.

The property has been mostly vacant since that time, though the Middlesex County Health Department used it as a site for COVID vaccinations.

CVS may soon show whether AI can start to replace call centers

  • Companies are increasingly turning to AI to see if it can improve the customer service experience.
  • CVS plans to use AI so that pharmacy customers don't have to go through a menu option, per The Wall Street Journal.
  • They'll be able to talk to the AI before being directed to a live agent, CVS Health CTO told The Journal.

Insider Today

CVS plans to use artificial intelligence in an effort to improve the customer-service experience, CVS Health Chief Technology Officer Tilak Mandadi told The Wall Street Journal .

Mandadi told the publication that the retail giant's health division plans to roll out an app so that customers don't have to get on the phone to reach a pharmacist or a live agent at a call center — a practice that's less favored by Gen Z .

The app will rely on AI so that customers can get text-based answers in a "natural language," Mandadi said.

But for those who still want to call, Mandadi said that CVS will also use AI so that customers don't have to go through a tedious menu option on the phone and can immediately ask their questions.

"For calls, we want to move away from the traditional, incredibly annoying menu-based options—such as press 1 for this, press 2 for this, etc.," Mandadi told The Journal. "Instead, you will just say what you are calling about, and AI will respond if it can answer the question."

The CTO added that customers will be directed to a live customer representative if the AI cannot answer their questions.

CVS is the latest retail giant to rely on AI to assist customers .

But for call centers, AI is already being tested in pivotal roles in assisting employees.

The technology, for example, could help emergency dispatchers get real-time translation of a caller's speech, Business Insider previously reported. AI could also help prioritize those calls during high-volume periods, which can be crucial for a field that is understaffed .

SoftBank Corp. is also testing an AI that can soften the tone of a caller's voice to reduce the stress of a customer service representative.

AI chatbots have also started to replace some need for a live representative, especially for the phone-call- averse generation.

Affirm, the buy-now, pay-later provider, found that less than 40% of customers needed to speak with a person after using its AI chatbot, according to the company's CEO Max Levchin.

One study by Gartner, a tech research firm, showed that AI could replace 20 to 30% of customer service agents by 2026.

It's unclear when CVS will roll out its new app and AI-powered service.

A CVS spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment sent outside business hours.

CVS location on Kennedy St NW set to close in July

WASHINGTON ( DC News Now) — A Northwest DC CVS Pharmacy location is set to close next month.

Neighbors are raising concerns about access to essential goods and prescription drugs in neighborhoods near the Kennedy St NW store, expected to close on July 24.

The next-closest CVS locations are about a mile and a half away.

“We seniors need things in our neighborhood. What are we gonna do?” said Geneva Twyman, who lives in Riggs Park. “I like to come by here and get a few things for my house on the way home. We shouldn’t let this place close.”

Fire on Harpers Ferry Bridge limiting train service

Some of the store’s shelves were nearly bare when DC News Now crews went inside on Monday.

Some baby care essentials, bath and hygiene products, and paper products were all in short supply, except for items behind lock and key.

Customers told DC News Now that they had heard about people shoplifting at the store.

“I remember people talking about stealing at this CVS, little things like chocolate and stuff,” said nearby student and customer Azael Banyan.

He said the store is also a hot spot for students and teens to hang out after school.

CVS would not confirm retail theft as a reason for the store’s closure when DC News Now reached out Monday.

Ward 4 councilmember Janeese Lewis George posted about the closure on X, saying closing the only neighborhood CVS near Brightwood Park and Manor Park risks seniors and families’ access to vital health and wellness services.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Columbia Heights CVS to close in February

When we asked the CVS corporate office why the store was closing, the company said:

“Maintaining access to pharmacy services in the communities we serve is an important factor we consider when making store closure decisions. Other factors include local market dynamics, population shifts, a community’s store density, and ensuring there are other geographic access points to meet the needs of the community.”

Walgreens closing stores as pharmacy chain reports tough outlook

The number of stores or locations hasn’t been finalized, but the drug store chain characterized it as a ‘significant’ amount..

Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. slashed its guidance due to a worsening retail environment and announced it would close significantly more stores as its new chief executive officer seeks to turn the business around.

Walgreens said Thursday that in addition to the store closures they would make more organizational changes without specifying further job cuts. The company has had a rocky few years with turnover in the executive ranks amid a challenging retail climate.

Shares fell as much as 20% before markets opened in New York. CVS shares were also down as much as 4%.

The store closures will take place over the next three years, Chief Executive Officer Tim Wentworth said on a call with analysts. The total number is not finalized, he said, adding “we will update you in due course.”

Walgreens lowered its forecast range for full-year adjusted earnings to a range of $2.80 to $2.95 per share, after lowering the top end of its guidance the prior quarter. Adjusted earnings for the three months ending May 31 were 63 cents a share, worse than the 68 cents that Wall Street analysts anticipated.

The company said it expects recent headwinds to persist into the next fiscal year, according to presentation slides posted ahead of management’s call with investors.

The Boots business saw quarterly sales of $5.7 billion, an increase of 2.8% from the year-ago period. The company had revived discussions last year about a potential exit from Boots but has since shelved plans for a possible initial public offering of Boots and is now exploring other options, Bloomberg reported, citing people with knowledge of the matter.

Operating income in the quarter was $111 million compared to a $477 million operating loss a year ago when the company took a $431 million writedown on its Boots business.

Related: Brookshire’s sells its pharmacies to Walgreens

Like rival CVS Health Corp, Walgreens has been moving away from its retail roots and pushing deeper into more lucrative areas like primary care. The efforts have hit profits, though, putting pressure on executives to execute a turnaround.

The shares lost half their value during the short tenure of Chief Executive Officer Roz Brewer. Under the current CEO Wentworth, who was appointed in 2023, the company has launched a review of the business aimed at increasing cash flow and growing more in health care. Late last year, the drugstore announced a $1 billion cost-cutting program, in part by closing unprofitable locations. On Thursday, management said they’re on track to meet that goal.

The U.S. health care unit, which includes primary-care provider VillageMD, grew more than its traditional retail pharmacy division.

The health care segment posted revenue of $2.1 billion, an increase of 7.6% compared to the year-ago quarter. Walgreens has invested $5.2 billion in VillageMD, allowing it to open hundreds of doctors’ offices in its drugstores. It has since announced plans to close 160 of the clinics, and last quarter announced a $5.8 billion writedown related to the business.

The company’s U.S. retail pharmacy unit posted revenue of $28.5 billion, an increase of 2.3% from the year-ago quarter.

Walgreens could shutter over 2k stores as sales plunge amid stubborn inflation.

Walgreens on Thursday said it could shutter up to a quarter of its more than 8,600 US locations amid plunging retail sales as inflation-battered shoppers cut back on spending.

The struggling drug store chain, which closed 150 US locations last year, cut its profit forecast ahead of reporting its quarterly earnings — sending the company’s stock plummeting by nearly 25% in mid-day trading.

Walgreens CEO Tim Wentworth, who took over the 123-year-old company in October, cited “persistent pressures on the US consumer and the impact of recent marketplace dynamics, which have eroded pharmacy margins” for the lowered expectations.

He announced a turnaround plan that includes closing underperforming stores, the removal of multiple mid-level executives and a $1 billion cost-cutting initiative.

Walgreens plans to shutter a "meaningful percent" of its more than 8,600 US locations, the company said Thursday.

“Approximately 25% of Walgreens stores are not contributing to our long-term strategy,” a Walgreens representative told The Post.

“We’re finalizing an optimization program that we expect will include closing a significant portion of these locations over the next three years.”

The Deerfield, Ill.-based company, which lowered prices on over 1,300 products back last month , did not specify exactly how many stores will be shut.

“The consumer is absolutely stunned by the absolute prices of things, and the fact that some of them may not be inflating doesn’t actually change their resistance to the current pricing,” Wentworth told CNBC.

The company revealed adjusted earnings per share are down 36.6% on a constant currency basis due to “a challenging US retail environment.”

It forecast an adjusted profit of $2.80 to $2.95 per share for its financial year ending August, lower than the $3.20 to $3.35 per share range it announced in March.

Analysts expect an annual profit of $3.20 per share, according to LSEG data.

Walgreens stock sank to $11.93 Thursday, down 24.3%.

The company had halved its dividend to 25 cents per share earlier this year in an attempt to conserve cash as sticky inflation dampens spending on over-the-counter products and pressure increases on reimbursement payments for filling prescriptions.

“The results this morning were just absolutely terrible. I mean, it’s kind of been the theme over the last three to eight earnings reports to be brutally honest,” said David Wagner, portfolio manager and equity analyst at Aptus Capital Advisors.

Walgreens CEO Tim Wentworth announced ambitious turnaround plan after the company cut its profit forecast for the year.

“They brought in new CEO Tim Wentworth and he has a good history on the healthcare services side,” but investors are focused on his next steps, added Wagner, whose firm owns 241,583 Walgreens shares through a unit.

Walgreens is also aiming to simplify its US healthcare portfolio that includes primary care provider VillageMD.

Wentworth told the Wall Street Journal that the company will no longer be VillageMD’s majority owner.

The company also conducted a review of its Boots UK business and concluded it will continue to invest in it, he said on a conference call.

As of February, Walgreens had closed 484 stores in the UK and 625 stores in the U.S., according to a regulatory filing.

“We have a really strong level of conviction around the core business (retail pharmacy) that we are remodeling here, will be a very different Walgreens,” Wentworth said on a call with analysts.

Wentworth was named CEO after former CEO Rosalind Brewer announced her departure after a rocky, two-and-a-half-year tenure .
