INSIDE: Surprisingly vibrant and walkable, we share a whole list of things to do Phoenix downtown–you won’t even need a car!

For years I thought of Phoenix as a “region.” Great weather & spectacular scenery? Sure. But a city ? With a traditional downtown? Not so much. Then I went to a concert, expecting to leave right afterward, and discovered something unexpected . . .

Downtown Phoenix was hopping -there were people everywhere, out and about, walking around and having a great time. Wait, WHAT???

It was time to give the downtown “city” part of Phoenix a closer look.

Downtown Phoenix Arizona: It’s a (real) Thing

Clearly I had taken my eye off the ball regarding what was going on in the state’s largest city (and its capital). In recent years, Phoenix has committed to redeveloping its urban corridor to offer more experiences to both business and leisure travelers.

Translation: there’s lots of cool stuff in downtown Phoenix. And you can walk to it all.

It’s not just the “big things,” like the Convention Center, baseball stadium and basketball arena. Those are great, but not enough to create a downtown atmosphere. You could drive to an event, then go home afterwards.

To be a true downtown you need more. Specifically . . . people .

Tons of new apartments and condos have sprouted up in recent years. Which means people are living downtown . And where people live, they shop, eat, and just plain do stuff.

Which makes being in downtown Phoenix fun .

And it’s all within walking distance, so you even get a little exercise in the process. (Which in my mind totally justifies stopping for a cookie! 🍪)

We’ve put together a guide of what to do in downtown Phoenix to get you started. Whether you’re looking to shop in funky boutiques, discover some history, or just enjoy the Arizona sunshine with a refreshing microbrew, you’ll find it here.

Next time you’re coming to town for a convention, or even just in from the ‘burbs to catch a Diamondbacks game, take some time to explore downtown Phoenix. It’ll be worth the trip.

Arizona Science Center, Phoenix

When I was in Downtown Phoenix, one of my go-to places is the Arizona Science Center. It’s located in the Heritage and Science Park on Washington Street, and it’s an interactive museum that never fails to captivate me.

As soon as I stepped inside, I was greeted by over three hundred and fifty exhibitions, each offering a unique and engaging experience. I love delving into the world of renewable energy and discovering how solar power is harnessed and utilized. Another favorite of mine is the Immersion Theater, where I was able to have a surreal encounter with nature and truly feel immersed in its beauty. What sets the Arizona Science Center apart is not just its exhibitions but also its additional features. 4. The Teapot

The Teapot

When I wanted to treat myself to some cozy comforts right in the heart of Downtown Phoenix, I headed to a delightful rural-style cottage on 5th Avenue. This charming coffee shop is housed in a meticulously restored early 1900s building that wouldn’t look out of place in the picturesque countryside of Britain.

As soon as I stepped inside, I was welcomed by the aroma of freshly brewed tea and the sight of mouthwatering scones adorned with cream and jam. There’s nothing quite like enjoying a leisurely afternoon on the lush lawn, savoring the classic combination of tea and scones. If I’m in the mood for something a bit more indulgent, I couldn’t resist pairing a creamy latte with a slice of homemade chocolate cake that practically oozes with cream.

To my surprise and delight, the menu also features traditional English savories that transport me straight to the British Isles. From quiches and sausage rolls to pork pies, I can’t help but appreciate the authenticity and attention to detail in every bite.

It’s truly remarkable to find a slice of Britain amidst the towering skyscrapers of Downtown Phoenix. And trust me, you don’t want to miss out on trying their homemade lemonade—it’s the perfect refreshing drink to complement the cozy atmosphere.

5. Roosevelt Row

Roosevelt Row Mural, Phoenix

As an art enthusiast in Downtown Phoenix, I found myself drawn to the vibrant community of Roosevelt Row. This is where the creative souls of the city come together, and the atmosphere is undeniably hip and bohemian. What truly sets this place apart are the fascinating and unconventional art galleries that line the streets.

As I strolled through Roosevelt Row, I was constantly surrounded by artistic expressions that ignite my imagination. Colorful murals adorn the walls of the buildings, transforming them into captivating canvases. The streets themselves are adorned with vibrant sculptures, each one adding its own touch of whimsy and charm.

One of my favorite experiences is capturing a moment beneath the functional Shadow Play sculptures. These unique installations not only engage the senses but also invite interaction. After snapping a photo, I often find myself taking a moment to sit on one of the thoughtfully designed geometrical benches. From there, I can ponder the mesmerizing patterns of shadows cast by the overhead canopy. It’s a serene and contemplative experience that adds another layer of depth to the art-filled surroundings.

If you happen to visit Downtown Phoenix on the first Friday of the month, make sure to stop by the First Friday A.R.T.S Market. The atmosphere is infused with that fantastic bohemian energy that makes Roosevelt Row truly special.

6. Heritage Square

Heritage Square, Phoenix

Whenever I wanted to take a step back in time and explore the essence of Victorian-era Downtown Phoenix, I found myself wandering through Heritage Square. This charming square is lined with buildings dating back to the late 1800s, allowing me to truly immerse myself in the atmosphere of the past.

One of the standout attractions in Heritage Square is the Rosson House, a stunning museum that resembles a Gothic work of art. Its architecture is so captivating that it wouldn’t be out of place in a horror movie. As I stepped inside, I was immediately transported to the Victorian era. The rooms are meticulously furnished to reflect the style and aesthetics of that time. Walking through the house, I can’t help but feel as if the residents have just stepped outside, leaving behind flickering candelabras on the dining table. It’s an enchanting and, admittedly, slightly spooky experience.

Within the square, there is another gem called The Bungalow. Here, I was able indulge my love for all things Victorian by purchasing replica jewelry in the style of Downtown Abbey, as well as exploring a variety of handicrafts and homemade wooden toys. It’s a treasure trove for anyone with an appreciation for the intricate beauty of the Victorian era.

When hunger strikes, Heritage Square has a plethora of dining options to satisfy any craving. From a cozy British pub serving up traditional fare to a pizzeria offering a taste of Italy, and even a restaurant specializing in Japanese cuisine, there’s something for everyone’s palate. It’s a delightful blend of culinary experiences that adds to the overall charm of the square.

7. Lustre Rooftop Bar

Lustre Rooftop Bar

When it comes to the trendiest spots in Downtown Phoenix, the Lustre Rooftop Bar takes the crown. This place may be located in a city founded during the Victorian era, but it’s anything but antiquated. In fact, it’s the epitome of coolness in DT Phoenix—literally.

I was immediately charmed by the Lustre’s chic and sophisticated vibe as I stroll onto its rooftop. The centerpiece of this remarkable installation is an impressive rooftop swimming pool that instantly sets the scene for an unforgettable experience. From Monday to Friday, they offer poolside happy hours, creating the perfect atmosphere to unwind and enjoy the breathtaking views of Downtown Phoenix. But the excitement doesn’t stop there—this place knows how to throw incredible pool parties both day and night, making it the ultimate destination for fun and entertainment.

To truly elevate the experience, I recommend booking a VIP cabana. These luxurious retreats can accommodate up to six people and come complete with food and drinks included. It’s the ultimate indulgence and provides a private haven to relax and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. If a cabana isn’t your style, you can still enjoy the sun-soaked bliss by lounging on one of the comfortable sunbeds. Just make sure to dress in your very best beachwear—jeans are a no-go in this stylish setting. Don’t forget your sunscreen and towel either, as you’ll want to soak up the sun and make the most of your time at this remarkable rooftop bar.

With over one thousand three hundred seats, it’s a spacious venue that hosts a range of captivating performances, from Broadway productions to ballet and opera. The Orpheum Theater is the go-to place for experiencing the magic of live performances.

What makes the Orpheum even more fascinating is its rich history. Over the years, this versatile space has served various purposes, from hosting vaudeville presentations to being a cinema house. Thanks to careful restoration, the theater has been returned to its original glory. The Baroque building features elaborate external wall friezes that capture the eye, while detailed frescos around the stage transport audiences to a world of artistic splendor.

Whenever I need a serene escape in Downtown Phoenix, I find solace in the Japanese Friendship Garden. Nestled within the Margaret T Hance Park, this enchanting garden is a hidden oasis of tranquility on 3rd Avenue.

Spanning three and a half acres, this oasis features peaceful lakes adorned with cascading waterfalls and graceful fountains. The winding pathways are lined with a symphony of flowering trees and shrubs, creating a picturesque setting that is perfect for a leisurely stroll. Each step I take brings a sense of peace and rejuvenation.

The garden, known as Ro Ho En, is a tribute to Himeji, Phoenix’s twin city in Japan. It serves as a symbol of friendship and cultural exchange between the two cities. Within the garden, there is a captivating Musoan tea house where once a month, the serene atmosphere comes alive with traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. It’s a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the art of tea and experience a taste of Japanese culture.

Throughout the year, the Japanese Friendship Garden also hosts various exhibitions that celebrate Japanese art and culture. 13. Chase Field

Chase Field, Phoenix

As a sports enthusiast in Downtown Phoenix, one of my favorite pastimes is catching a Major League baseball game at Chase Field. Joining the enthusiastic crowd of forty-nine thousand spectators, I eagerly cheer on our home team, the Arizona Diamondbacks, as they swing for the fences.

Located on East Jefferson Avenue in the heart of Downtown Phoenix, Chase Field has been the epicenter of baseball excitement since its construction in the late 1990s. Notably, it was the first ballpark to feature a retractable roof, allowing us to enjoy the game rain or shine. The moment I step into the stadium, I can feel the electric atmosphere that fills the air, anticipation building for the thrilling moments that lie ahead.

Chase Field is not only a haven for baseball enthusiasts but also a versatile venue that hosts concerts and large public events. Its expansive layout ensures that there is something for everyone. Alongside the game, I explored numerous food and drink concessions, treating myself to an array of delicious options while immersing myself in the festive ambiance of the stadium.

Attending a game at Chase Field is a testament to the vibrant sports culture that permeates Downtown Phoenix. The cheers, the crack of the bat, and the collective excitement of the crowd create an experience that is truly unforgettable. 14. Gypsy Bar

Gypsy Bar, Phoenix

When it comes to ending a night in Downtown Phoenix on a high note, there’s no better place to be than the Gypsy Bar. As I stepped onto the dance floor, I felt the pulsating energy in the air, ready to ignite the night. With an adults-only policy and an atmosphere that screams “party, party, party,” this is where the fun truly begins.

Nestled within the vibrant entertainment and retail complex of CityScape, the Gypsy Bar spans an impressive ten thousand square feet. The moment I entered, I was greeted by a long island bar, offering an array of libations to fuel the night ahead. For those seeking an elevated experience, bottle service and VIP options are also available, ensuring that every moment is imbued with a touch of luxury.

The heart of the Gypsy Bar lies on the dance floor, where I can let loose and showcase my best moves. 15. Her Secret Is Patience

Her Secret Is Patience, Phoenix

There’s an awe-inspiring public artwork in Downtown Phoenix that simply cannot be missed—the breathtaking sculpture known as “Her Secret Is Patience.” As I ventured into Civic Space Park, my gaze is immediately drawn skyward to behold this magnificent creation.

Hovering one hundred feet above the ground, the sculpture takes the form of a mesmerizing coil of metal threads, gracefully twisting and turning with each passing breeze. During the day, the sculpture casts captivating shadows, adding a touch of whimsy to the surrounding landscape. But it’s when the sun sets and darkness descends upon the city that Her Secret Is Patience truly comes alive.

As if by magic, the sculpture illuminates the night sky with an ethereal display of undulating rainbow colors. The vibrant hues cascade through the metal threads, creating a visual spectacle that seems almost otherworldly. With each shimmering glow, it’s as if the sculpture has transformed into an otherworldly being, captivating all who behold its radiant presence.

With three separate trips to Arizona this year, it goes without saying that I love this southwestern state. Nature abounds with the Saguaro cacti in the south and the magnificent Grand Canyon in the north. From the southern city of Tucson with a strong Native American and Mexican influence, to the mountainous northern city of Flagstaff, there is just as much variety in Arizona’s cities.

Arizona’s capital city of Phoenix is centrally located and the perfect place to start a Grand Canyon road-trip . While Phoenix is easy to reach and is a good starting point for any Arizona adventure, there are so many things to do in Phoenix. You don’t need to leave the city to have a great trip to Arizona.

Do you ever get annoyed searching for things to do in a city and all the recommendations require a car to go places outside of the city? If you want to know the best things to do in Phoenix that are actually in the city this guide on what to do in downtown Phoenix is for you! They are all located downtown or in a neighborhood nearby. Plus find out everything else you need for getting around and staying in downtown Phoenix.

What To Do in Downtown Phoenix

Fun Things to Do in Downtown Phoenix

Learn the state history at the arizona capitol & memorial museum.

What to Do in Downtown Phoenix: Arizona Capitol

The Arizona State Capitol offers sporadic walk-in tours to parties of 10 or less. Check the website to see times and dates for any guided tours. During my visit there were no tours available.

Even without a tour you can still visit the capitol. There is a free museum within the capitol building. The various exhibits cover different aspects of Arizona’s history. While the exhibits are on multiple floors I was only able to visit the first floor as an event was in session.

Although I was limited in what I could see, I did find the small exhibits quite interesting. There is one on the USS Arizona which sank in Pearl Harbor. While naval and war history usually isn’t too interesting to me, the exhibit was well done to present some personal stories and display artifacts such as the silver service from the ship.

Walk Through Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza

WWII Memorial at Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza in downtown Phoenix

It doesn’t seem right to call a park full of memorials “nice”. It’s sad that so many memorials are needed, but the park is a nice way to commemorate various individuals and events in Arizona’s history.

In addition to names and dates, many of the memorials give a bit of history about the people or events they represent. Take a walk through before or after visiting the capitol.

Tour the Rosson House Museum at Heritage Square

Rosson House: fun things to do in downtown Phoenix

This historic house museum can only be visited as a guided tour. The tour through the 1895 restored Queen Anne Victorian home describes the architecture and history of the home. It also covers interesting stories about the three families who owned the home. It’s a great way to learn about the early history of Phoenix and prominent families in the community.

Currently an additional Silva Family tour is also available on Friday afternoons. It’s best to sign up for both tours as they complement each other.

There are restrooms and a gift shop at Heritage Square.

Find out the History of Law Enforcement at the Phoenix Police Museum

Phoenix Police Museum: best things to do in downtown Phoenix

I wouldn’t have sought out a police museum, but when I saw it was free and one of the fun things to do in downtown Phoenix I thought it would be interesting. Like many niche museums, it was quite fascinating.

While the museum isn’t huge, it does pack a lot of information into the small space. The exhibits tell a general history of law enforcement as well as specific stories from Phoenix. For example the Miranda laws were named after and began due to a trial that took place in Phoenix.

There are no public restrooms, but an employee kindly let me use the employee restrooms. A few souvenirs are available for purchase.

Admire Art at the Arizona Latino Arts & Cultural Center

Arizona Latino Arts & Cultural Center: what to do in downtown Phoenix

If you are wondering what to do in downtown Phoenix, check out the Arizona Latino Arts & Cultural Center events and exhibits. They all celebrate and/or include Latino artists.

I wandered in one day and there were two employees painting in the gift shop area. There wasn’t a specific event going on as far as I knew. I was the only one there, but I enjoyed the artwork around the small space.

Search for Street Art on Roosevelt Row

Roosevelt Row Mural in Downtown Phoenix

If you like street art, one of the best things to do in downtown Phoenix is to take a walk along Roosevelt Row. In addition to some restaurants and shops there are a lot of murals.

Start at N 7th St and snap a photo of the Roosevelt mural. Then walk west along Roosevelt Ave. Make sure to go down some side streets to find all the murals.

Eat in Downtown Phoenix

Cornish Pasty Co: Where to Eat in Downtown Phoenix

I walked by Cornish Pasty Co one day and thought that my mom would like the restaurant and maybe I should add it to my list. As my mom wasn’t traveling with me and I’m usually not a huge fan of pasties, I forgot about it. A few nights later a Lyft driver recommended it to me.

Then on my last full day in Phoenix when I was going to go to the Pizzeria Bianco I found out from a tour guide that this highly rated spot usually has really long lines. I asked for another recommendation and she said the Cornish Pasty Co.

It took two solid recommendations from locals, but I was so happy I tried the restaurant. Maybe I haven’t had good pasties in the past, but my pork and apple was amazing!

The cool thing about their menu is that it is full of different kinds. There are the traditional varieties with steak, potatoes, and rutabagas. There is also a wide variety with fillings from other cuisines such as Mexican and Indian. You’re sure to find one that you like!

Zen Thai Cafe is a solid Thai spot with weekday lunch specials. Matt’s big breakfast is a popular choice for breakfast classics.

Painting at the Phoenix Art Museum -- one of the best things to do in Phoenix

For cool things to do in Phoenix head to the Phoenix Art Museum. Located in southern Midtown it is an easy walk from downtown. The museum is quite large so allow enough time to visit. American art, Western art, Asian art, contemporary art, and European art are among the permanent collections.

I really enjoyed the Western Art. The Thorne Miniature rooms is another popular exhibit that features small scale replicas of rooms from different time periods and locations.

The museum is pay what you wish on Wednesday nights.

Explore the Desert Botanical Gardens

Artwork and Cacti at the Desert Botanical Gardens -- cool things to do in Phoenix

If you are looking for fun things to do in Phoenix you definitely want to visit the Desert Botanical Gardens. Unlike most botanical gardens with a variety of flowers and plants, the gardens in Phoenix focus on cacti and desert plants.

The gardens are well laid out and do a great job showcasing the desert flora. Several themed looping trails can be reached from the main trail around the gardens.

The Sonoran Desert Loop trail has some elevation and offers nice views of the surrounding area. It is also full of plants you can find in the Sonoran Desert (which Phoenix is located in). The Plants & People of the Sonoran Desert Loop trail includes five different desert habitats. In addition to the plants within these habitats, Native American homes are also included.

There are informational signs around describing everything you see. I really liked how there was enough information to learn more, but not too much that someone like me that likes to read everything feels overwhelmed.

Discover All the Things to Do in Papago Park

Organ pipe cacti at Desert Botanical Gardens in Papago Park

Papago Park is home to the Desert Botanical Gardens and a host of other attractions including the Arizona Heritage Center, the Phoenix Zoo, and the Hall of Flame Fire Museum.

It’s a great park to walk around in as well. The Hole in the Rock hike is popular, especially at sunset. You can easily spend a full day in the park.

Head to Scottsdale

Phoenix Sky Harbor is an international airport that has flights with over 20 airlines. All of the major and low-cost US airlines fly to Phoenix.

Both Amtrak and Greyhound have routes to Phoenix.

How to Get Around Phoenix

Valley Metro Rail in Phoenix

You can rent a car at the airport, but there are plenty of fun things to do in downtown Phoenix that you don’t need to have a car. In downtown and Midtown you can walk everywhere, take the lightrail, or use public buses. Papago Park is a little farther afield to the east. It took about an hour, but I took public buses to the park. Lyft and Uber are both widely available as well.

How to Use Public Transportation in Phoenix

Public transportation in Phoenix includes the Valley Metro Rail which runs from Northwest Phoenix, through Midtown, across downtown Phoenix, by the airport, to downtown Tempe, and into Mesa. Downtown Tempe has a streetcar line. Numerous buses run within the Phoenix metro area.

One ride on the light rail or bus costs $2 per ride and doesn’t include a transfer. If you are planning on taking more than one trip in a day, make sure to buy a day pass for $4. Day passes for 7, 15, and 31 days are also available. The streetcar is currently free through 2023 and will cost $1 per ride in 2024.

At the light rail station purchase a single ride light rail ticket or daily passes valid for all modes of public transportation. Buy from the ticket machines with cash or card on the platform before boarding. On the buses you can buy with cash from the driver. Make sure to tell the driver what kind of ticket you want before inserting your money.

How to Get From the Airport to Downtown Phoenix

The airport is located just east of downtown Phoenix. Many hotels offer free airport transfers. If your hotel doesn’t, take the free PHX SkyTrain at the airport to the Valley Metro Rail 44th St/Washington stop (the Phoenix light rail). The light rail will take you directly downtown in about 20 minutes. Buses #1 and #44 also stop at the airport and go downtown.

Where to Stay in Phoenix

Where to Stay in Downtown Phoenix: SpringHill Suites

Springhill Suites Downtown

Springhill Suites is located on the eastern side of downtown. From this hotel I walked to all the downtown and Midtown things to do in Phoenix included in this post. There is a free shuttle to the airport and the downtown convention center, but the hotel doesn’t advertise it. Save yourself the trouble and contact the hotel ahead of time if you would like an airport pick-up.

While the hotel was renovated in 2005, it feels like it was renovated last year. The sound proofing left a bit to be desired, but I was impressed with the cleanliness. In January I couldn’t take advantage of the outdoor pool, but it was just chilly enough at night to enjoy the hot tub.

Aloft Phoenix-Airport

Aloft is conveniently located across the street from the 44th street light rail and Sky Harbor SkyTrain stations. It’s a quick rail ride to downtown. There is also a free airport shuttle.

The hotel itself is modern with many trendy touches. One of those is the frosted glass panel in the shower that goes to the bedroom. It’s not completely see-through, but may not be great if you are sharing your room with your boss! The outdoor pool was just what I needed on my very hot 90 degree hotel stay.

The oldest Catholic church in Phoenix, built in 1881, it is a truly historic monument.

You can go to mass if you want and there are self-guided tours if you want to see the beauty and art inside it.

It is such a special church and Pope John Paul II visited it in 1987. A visit here only takes a few minutes but is one of the relaxing things to do in downtown Phoenix. 231 North 3rd Street

Top Museums in Downtown Phoenix

Outside the Heard Museum in Phoenix

Arizona Capitol Museum

You will learn all about the history of Phoenix and Arizona, including how it became a territory back in the day.

Probably the most well-known exhibit is the USS Arizona, which was destroyed during Pearl Harbor.

They have found some of the artifacts from it and they are on display here. The tour guides are extremely knowledgeable and very friendly.

Feel free to ask them anything and they'll be happy to answer any question you ask them. Admission is free. 1700 West Washington Street

Arizona Science Center

We love to go to the Arizona Science Center as it is one of the most awe-inspiring things to do in downtown Phoenix.

There is a 360-degree planetarium, the "Victoria's World" exhibit with a massive T. Rex skeleton (don't worry, it won't bite!), and loads of other exhibits and events.

They even have an 5-story tall IMAX theater. This is truly a perfect place for kids of all ages! 600 East Washington Street

Children's Museum of Phoenix

This is one of our favorite family-friendly things to do in downtown Phoenix. There are loads of exhibits that are hands-on, fun, and also educational for kids of all ages.

Some of these include "TMX" where your little one can ride a trike around a track, or the children's garden where they can plant, and learn about them.

This is just a small sample of the fun things to do here. 215 North 7th Street

Heard Museum

Anyone who is interested in Native Peoples, and their history, must visit this incredible museum.

It is known as one of the best, if not the best, museums dedicated to American Indian art, history, and culture in the world.

With thousands of pieces of Indian artwork on permanent display, cultural exhibits and traveling exhibits, you will be amazed at how much there is to see and how different each tribe was from one another.

There are also exhibits dedicated to the present, and the future, of Native Peoples and how they are surviving in the USA. 2301 N Central Ave.

Phoenix Art Museum

This museum has become a must see if you love classic art since it has incredible pieces from artists such as Monet, Frida Kahlo, and many other famous artists.

There is Asian art that dates back to the 5th century or even before that. What we also love is that we never know what else we'll you'll see when we check out this museum.

Because of that it is one of the things to do in downtown Phoenix that we visit whenever we can.

Much of the artwork, both past and present, come from all over the world. 1625 North Central

Best Restaurants in Downtown Phoenix

Lunch at the Kettle Black in downtown Phoenix

You will find more than 100 restaurants in downtown Phoenix. These are just a few of our favorites.

Angel's Trumpet Ale House

If you love being able to have some bites, lots of brews, and sit outside during great weather, then going here is one of the things to do in downtown Phoenix.

Angel's is known for great menu choices, an excellent selection of beers on tap, and loads of seating.

If the temps are too hot for you, you can also head inside to enjoy the comfort of the indoors.

Angel's has also been awarded Tripadvisor's "Certificate of Excellence." 810 North 2nd Street

The Arrogant Butcher

The name says it all...well other than they aren't arrogant at all.

Something we love is that they also have simple burgers and appetizers, but the real reason you will want to come here are the delicious New York Strip steak, Filet Mignon, or Prime Rib.

They have a nice selection of beers and excellent wines, but we have to admit we almost always order their amazing cocktails. 2 East Jefferson

Breakfast Club

One of the best breakfast and lunch spots is the Breakfast Club.

The Breakfast Club has an utterly delicious choice of dishes on their menu such as numerous types of waffles, huevos rancheros, and so much more.

Now, their name suggests they are only for breakfast, but you can also hit them for a lunch time meal too.

There are vegetarian options available. 2 East Jefferson Street

The Killer Whale Sex Club

This is one of our favorite places to grab some grub and sexy named, delicious drinks.

I won't list them because you'll want to be surprised and have a laugh when you go here.

The food is fun and yummy with pork lumpia, crab fried steak, Korean fried chicken with squid ink bun (try and find that anywhere else!), among others. 922 North 6thStreet

Note : If you aren't ready for some, ummmm, inappropriate photos on the wall and a dark and speakeasy type of place, this might not be for you. Or just have a sense of humor and you'll love it.

Compass Arizona Grill at the Hyatt Regency

Get 360-degree views of Phoenix from the Compass Arizona Grill at the Hyatt Regency.

It's one of our favorite things to do in downtown Phoenix as you can enjoy both dinner and a drink (in the Company Arizona Lounge).

How do you get 360-degree views? It's because this lounge actually REVOLVES as you sit there so you can get constantly different views during your time here. 122 North Second Street

Recommended by pretty much every local we know as a place that you must try out, you will be glad you did.

With many original styles of pizzas, sandwiches, and entrees, you will love your meal.

The drinks are great too and the interior style of Hanny's is unlike any you will see elsewhere.

It is historic and also has modern art and curios that will make you think you've enter an art gallery at the same time as the restaurant. 40 North 1st Street

The Kettle Black Kitchen & Pub

This is our favorite pub to hit when we are about to go out for a night on the town and yet don't want to break the bank and want classic Irish pub food.

The mixed drinks are perfect, and they have numerous beers on tap and also in bottles or cans if you want to try something completely new and exciting.

We love their Guinness Braised Beef Ribs, Reuben, and they have a really tasty black bean burger for those looking for a vegetarian meal. 1 North First Street, #108

This is without question our favorite Mexican/Latin style restaurant in this area. The décor is totally cool with a mural of Frida Kahlo and other Latin inspired culture designs.

The food is out of this world - authentic with dishes such as tacos made with carne asada, carnitas, and out-of-the-ordinary ones like the Sonoran style.

If you are thirsty, they have loads of different cocktails and beers.

Since the whole area around it is full of murals, this is a great one of the things to do in downtown Phoenix if you want to knock out two events at once. 501 East Roosevelt Avenue

Arizona Center

This is truly the perfect place to shop and dine while in downtown Phoenix.

Something that Aram and I love is that they have an actual movie theater so we can go there, grab some snacks, and see a movie on the big screen!

The Marriott just built a new AC hotel there too so now you can stay at a great hotel in the middle of everything.

It will also put you within walking distance to the NHL, NBA, and NFL, teams play. 455 North 3rd Street

CityScape Phoenix

With over 2 blocks of space, there is just about anything you could imagine here including a bowling alley!

Downtown Farmer's Market

This is a special event as it only occurs on Saturday mornings throughout the year.

With loads of fresh food all a variety of local merchants, you can feel secure knowing you are having the healthiest food from around Valley.

Local chefs will be displaying their best concoctions for you to eat and more.

Something we love is that it is run by a non-profit and so it is also making sure that small businesses survive and thrive here in the Valley of the Sun. 721 North Central Avenue

Hidden Track Bottle Shop

This is definitely not your usual wine and alcohol store as they pride themselves on having choices that you won't find anywhere else.

The two owners will gladly give you personal service so you can find exactly what you are looking for whenever you visit here.

Depending on the day you visit, they may be holding special wine tastings where you can experience something new and learn from the masters.

There is also a small café when you want a bit to eat. 111 West Monroe Street

Large cocktail at Bliss Bar in the Roosevelt Row District

Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour

Constantly ranked as one of the top bars in all of Phoenix, this is a must visit whenever you are in downtown.

The drinks are delicious, and totally original and they also serve up some of the best food in the district.

We love this place because every time we go and sample a different cocktail, they look like pieces of art. The bartenders are truly inventive artists.

And it always cracks us up that it is located in the former Arizona Prohibition Center! 1 West Jefferson

Cobra Arcade Bar

Ding! Ding! Ding! Do you remember your high scores on all of your favorite video games from when you were a youngster (well, depending on your age)?

Some of the ones you will find here include those such as Dig Dug, Q*Bert, and the classic Donkey Kong! The cool thing about this part arcade, part bar is that they often change games.

If you don't love what they have, then you can come back again later to try something new.

In addition to that, they have a great bar stocked with everything you'll need to help, or hinder, your game playing abilities.

Note : The Cobra Arcade Bar is 21+ only. 801 North 2nd Street

Crown Public House

If you are going to a game, then this is the perfect place for you as it is between the Diamondbacks and the Suns Stadium.

It's also a great place to come watch a game as they have several TVs all tuned into your favorite AZ teams.

They have a massive menu for you to choose from and, of course, great drinks.

We love that they have a fun outdoor area, with shade covers, and misters so you can stay cool and watch everyone walking by as they head to a nearby game. 333 East Jefferson Street

The Valley Bar

Going here, especially with friends, is one of our favorite things to do in downtown Phoenix because it has something for everyone!

They have an extensive list of beers, cocktails, wines, and tasty food.

Now, we could say that about most places, but what sets it apart is their 250-person concert area and  games room with two pool tables, shuffleboard, pinball games, darts, and so much more.

It is a perfect way to play some games, eat some bits, drink some tasty drinks, and then see a very up-close-and-personal concert or event. 130 North Central Avenue

The Whining Pig Downtown

Simply stated, if you love beer, you have to come here!

With your choice of over 120 of them, you will always find something new.

They also have a nice wine list, great food (they are especially well known for the unique grilled cheese sandwiches which we love), and lots of fun classic games to play while you are chilling out.

If you are adventurous, ask for their "Brown Bag Option" where they choose a mystery beer, in a brown bag, and you get it for cheap! 201 East Washington Street, #104

Suspended more than 100 feet off the ground in the Phoenix Civic Space Park is an eye-catching public art installation that goes by the enigmatic name ‘Her Secret Is Patience’ . The mastermind of acclaimed American sculptor Janet Echelman, the structure is named after a quote from the late American philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson and is designed to create “shadow drawings” inspired by Arizona’s cloud shadows that captivated its creator during her first visit to the state. Tap That was such a cool, chill spot to enjoy some draft beers and yummy food. The outside looks like a house and when you walk in, it is just as cozy. Staff was super nice and explained how the "self serve" tap works. I really liked the concept of you serving yourself your own beer and with the many options to choose from, it's really nice! I ordered truffle fries to start with - perfection w/ the addition of Parmesan cheese and then shared the bbq chicken flatbread - my husband was shocked at how good it was. This is definitely a spot to checkout when in downtown - Roosevelt row.

Wanted to try a new place in Phoenix so went to Tap That Downtown. The food was great had nachos and Korean wings. To our surprise they had an "Adult Spelling Bee". We had such a great time. Not only was the beer, wine, and food amazing, but the spelling bee was so much fun. We will be back. If you plan on going for the spelling bee you don't have to study the dictionary. The hosts of the spelling bee are amazing and super fun. Can hardly wait for the next one. They will be hosting this spelling bee once a month.

Super cute spot with outdoor and indoor areas. The staff was friendly and very welcoming. Great concept of pouring your drink with a good selection of beers. Highly recommend the truffle fries

What a fun concept! We happened by this place and decided to check it out. You get a fob and can pour any beers you want to try. Go for a small taste or pour yourself a full glass. You pay by the ounce .... So try as many as you want! Rosa was the BEST! She is super friendly and took the time to explain the entire process for how to get our beers. You will love her...super friendly and helpful. Unfortunately we didn't get to try any food because the kitchen wasn't open. That said, the food menu looks amazing and we will definitely be back!

Review is based solely on the food delivered to me at the Greenwood Brewery next door. I was pleasantly surprised that my braised pork rib sandwich had a spicy kick to it. This is a flavorful sandwich. The fries were thick and perfectly cooked. This menu is offered at the Greenwood Brewery while we were playing trivia on a Tuesday evening. I'm going to using Tap That again for my dinner on Tuesdays!

This place had a nice little vibe to it. I wish they had more selection of beers and wine. A lot of beers were out when I went there. As for the food. It was ok. Typical bar food. The boneless wings though were pretty salty. It was just so salty. I wouldn't get them again. Overall our visit here was ok.

How to Make a Great Moscow Mule

Around the bar, it seems that this season's official cocktail is the Moscow Mule. Over the past few weeks, its popularity has skyrocketed. I'm a little surprised that people often say I make a really good one. It's such a simple drink, anyone should be able to put together a good one.

See Also: Drink Like Hemingway with a Josie Russell Cocktail How To Make (and Pronounce!) Great Caipirinhas

Alas, bartenders the world over feel like they need to dress up the Mule. In goes a dash or two of bitters. Sometimes they'll use a squirt of simple syrup. It's time to get back to basics, and reclaim the simple elegance of the Moscow Mule.

The history of the Moscow Mule fascinates me a little more than most cocktails; it's the direct result of a clever marketing scheme. It all started in the early 1940s in a New York hotel bar, where three men got together for drinks. The president of former spirits giant Heublein brought with him the president of Heublein's relatively new brand, Smirnoff vodka. Back then, vodka wasn't nearly as popular as it is today; it was often marketed as "white whiskey" to give it a little familiarity with the popular spirits of the day. (Oddly, a number of distillers are trying this again these days to get whiskey-loving bartenders back into white spirits. I wish them luck.). The third person was the owner of the Cock & Bull restaurant in Hollywood.

The Cock & Bull was sitting on a big cache of ginger beer, and was at a loss as to how to get rid of it profitably. For this group, the natural solution was to add Smirnoff vodka. A squeeze of lime was a natural add-in, bringing the Moscow Mule into the realm of the buck, an arcane drink category that simply mixed a base spirit with ginger beer and lemon or lime.

There's one more part to the story: The iconic copper mug. It became part of the Mule when a friend of the owner of Cock & Bull inherited a copper factory. They had a bunch of copper mugs laying around, which she sold to the Cock & Bull at a discount. The mugs proved eye-catching, and kept the drink especially frosty. Now if only there was an easy way to keep sticky-fingered guests from walking out the door with them.

The recipe, and some tips:

When making a great Moscow Mule, it's important to use real ginger beer; most ginger ale lacks the backbone necessary for the drink. Beyond that, all you need is some juice from a lime, and vodka. Oh, it's worth noting: This time of year, since local citrus has just gone out of season, the limes in the market right now are dry as dust. You might want to squeeze in an entire lime for the time being.

Moscow Mule Juice of half a lime (scant ½ ounce), shell reserved 1 ½ ounces vodka Ginger beer to fill (3 to 5 ounces)

Squeeze lime into a tall ice-filled glass. Drop in shell. Add vodka and ginger beer. Stir gently to combine. Garnish with a sprig of mint, if desired.

Kuznetski Most area in Moscow

Kuznetski Most is a small area between Tverskaya street, Kremlin, and Kitai Gorod (Lubyanka) and it's a downtown of Moscow. First of all, 'Kuznya' is a great place to walk: it is a real Moscow area, not a postcard at all, hectic busy streets neighbour tranquil lanes and courtyards with traditional architecture. There are also many very nice cafes, restaurants, clubs, and shops. If you want a cool place to meet people, go for a walk and to get the real feeling of the city, check out this area.

Kuznetsky Most area - photo by Sergey Rodovichenkov @FlickR

Long time ago there were only half-broken low wooden houses in Kuznetski Most area, and it was the place where poor blacksmithes lived. Blacksmith is 'Kuznets' in Russia, hence the name. In the beginning of the street (on top) there was a bridge over a small river, later this river was put underground, so there's no bridge anymore. About 200 years ago there was a rich Moscovitan noble buying this area. He immediately put away all the blacksmiths' houses and started to build a fancy new district. Just in few years he built up beautiful houses, with impressive ornaments, rich decoration, pools in the courtyards. Also, he opened some French boutiques in the area. That's when Kuznetski Most started to become fashionable. In a short time all the elite moved to this  area, and those who wasn't so fast were coming here to make some shopping and to sit in many of the restaurants and cafes around.  In the 20th century, when the communist times arrived, most of the buildings were given to government offices, some were given to soviet shops. The area became boring, the architecture was slowly deteriorating , but nobody seemed to care. In the beginning of the 90s  the area was revived again: the buildings were  restored , there was many new cafes being opened, boutiques, and shops. One important landmark of Kuznetsky Most is that it's home to FSB (Federal Security Bureau - former KGB) offices, and if you walk along Kuznetsky Most street you can get to the FSB reception, which is open 24 hours (in case you have something to report).
