Tour description

### Eat your way through the gastronomic heart of southern Italy on a carefully crafted Naples food tour.

Get a crash course in Neapolitan food as you taste all the city’s must-try classics in one morning. From a traditional local market to a modern pizzeria and every place in between, you’ll visit the decades-old establishments that are the backbone of the city center. As you comb the backstreets of Naples in the company of a local foodie, you’ll try two types of pizza, freshly fried seafoods, traditional pastries, and plenty more tastes that have won the hearts (and tastebuds!) of generations of napoletani .

Taste local specialties and explore the eclectic market in lively Pignasecca.

Start your Naples food tour in true Italian fashion with an espresso in hand. As you sip, your guide will fill you in on the intricate etiquette of coffee culture here in Naples. Follow it up with two different styles of light, flaky sfogliatella (Naples’ favorite typical pastry) from a blink-and-you'll-miss-it hidden bakery tucked away in the bustling backstreets.

From there, we’ll head into the heart of Naples’ food scene: the open-air Pignasecca market. As you make your way through the colorful stalls, with neighborhood residents doing their grocery shopping and chatting in Italian and Neapolitan with the vendors, you’ll be immersed in a true slice of daily life in southern Italy.

Our first stop at the market is an unassuming restaurant manned by the same team behind one of the most popular fresh fish stalls in the market, just steps away. Watch as the fishmongers fry up a traditional serving of cuoppo di pesce (incredible fried seafood)—and, of course, try it for yourself.

Time for another sweet treat! We’re off to a family-run bakery that’s been going strong for nearly a century to sample their delicious taralli cookies.

Dig into two types of pizza in the city that created it!

Our next order of business: fried pizza. A locally loved alternative to the popular Neapolitan pizza, this is the perfect snack to grab and eat on the go just like the napoletani. We’ll introduce you to our friends Antonio and Gennaro, the father-son team behind the most beloved pizza fritta in the Spanish Quarter. Sink your teeth into this warm, crispy staple of Naples street food and hear what makes theirs some of the best in the city.

From there, we’re off to a small, family-run produce store to meet Tina, the owner, and try the ripest and juiciest tomatoes followed by a tasting of mozzarella di bufala, fiordilatte, provola in a nearby deli. After trying these two staples in Italian cuisine, you'll understand the key to the best dishes is high-quality, simple ingredients.

At lunchtime, you'll feast on a Margherita pizza at modern pizzeria dedicated to footballer Maradona. You also meet Andrea, the owner, and peek behind the counter at the talented pizzaioli.

Your culinary journey through Naples ends with a little surprise. You'll head to a famous street kiosk for a refreshing and unique lemonade made with lemons from Sorrento. Locals describe this beverage as a mini-Vesuvius. Luckily, you have your expert foodie guide to show you how to drink it!

Eat and explore in the company of a local expert.

In one unforgettable morning, you’ll meet the friendly families and individuals whose high-quality products and dishes make Naples what it is, gaining a deeper understanding of Neapolitan history and heritage with every bite. With a local foodie guide to lead the way (and share plenty of tips and insights that will come in handy throughout the rest of your trip), there’s no better way to experience southern Italy’s most delicious city. From the lively open-air market to the hidden spots tucked away in Naples’ backstreets, you’ll discover the best bites in the city at the spots that do them best.

Please note that this description is an example and stops or tastes may vary depending on the season, day of the week, and group size. Regardless of where your tour goes, you always have a delicious experience.

This was one of the best food tours we have ever booked! The guide shared so much history about the city of Naples and took us to places we never would have ventured on our own. So much food! And wine! Small group size was perfect! This is a must if you are in Naples!

Oct 15, 2023

This tour is excellent! We visited so many places and experienced the “real” Napoli!! A must do. So much food….don’t eat anything before!! Melissa is a great tour guide. Really liked her!

Jun 28, 2023

This tour was amazing. If you pick any tour in Naples I would recommend this one highly. The tour guide was exceptional and all of the food stops were amazing. Be prepared to be extremely full at the end!! All the places were very local and I got to try many dishes I would never have found or tied on my own!

They tour was great, be ready to eat for days!!!

This is an excellent tour with a great local guide Melissa. We were lucky to be the first group to take this tour as it was newly created in Naples. Word of advice(warning) do not eat anything before hand and maybe even have a light dinner the night before. There is so much delicious food provided on this tour, you will be leaving in a fantastic food coma. My favourite part about this and other devour tours is that they take you to family run establishments with exceptional quality foods. We had eaten a lot of the food on this tour already, however we consistently found what we ate on tour to be of superior quality and freshness to what we tried ourselves. Definitely worth doing this tour, especially if you only have one or two days in Naples

Hubby and I had a Friday night tour with Marcello as part of our trip to Naples. This was by far one of the highlights of our trip. Not only did we get to try some of Naple's best food and drink, we also had a delightful time with our tour guide. Marcello was so knowledgeable about Naple's history and culture, and he was friendly, funny, and welcoming. We enjoyed meeting his friends and family at the last stop and learning all about Neopolitan traditions and language. As you can see, this was so much more than a food tour, and I wouldn't hesitate to go again if I had the chance! Grazie mille, Marcello!

Brandon K

Our guide, Aldo was excellent. His passion for both food and the city of Naples was obvious. He had everything coordinated perfectly, so we were able to walk into each location and get served effortlessly and he found spots that we absolutely could not have found ourselves. He educated us on the history of the city as we walked through and served us both the best Sfogliatelle we had in the city and the best eggplant I've had anywhere. After the tour concluded, he was happy to provide additional recommendations within the city of for the other stops on our trip. The ones we were able to try were all delicious. I was very happy to take this tour early in my visit and I only wish I could go back and eat more!

Gary C

The Napoli Food Tour with Aldo was a highlight of our 19 day vacation. Best food tour we’ve experienced. Stops for coffee, pasta omelette and pizza were woven seamlessly into our walk. Aldo didn’t partake in coffee, pastries or the omelette - we found out why. He was holding back. The award winning pizza was the best ever and don’t get too full prior to lunch like we did! Thank you Aldo and all the best to you, your wife and daughter!

Katy W

Aldo was very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor! He adapted the tour to our needs, as we had two young boys with us, and WOW was it hot!! I would recommend him, and these tours, too anyone wanting to learn a little more about the food and its history in the city.

Shahdad Mohseyni

One of the best food experiences going. The guides are locals, knowledgeable of the history and trying to support local business who build the community up. The end of the tour is a magical experience with amazing views of Naples and a funny and heart warming sing along. Don’t be fooled about what you heard about Naples. These guys are doing what they can to change stereotypes and give you an amazing experience.

Amy Rood

Food, love, wine, and Napoli! 🇮🇹❤️ We only had a short visit in Naples, but this tour absolutely made it. Aldo is passionate about food and this region, and you can't resist joining in on the enthusiasm. We loved eating and drinking our way through the city, but more than anything, we loved the people.

Gail Mills

My daughter and I had our tour yesterday with Marcello and we could not have been more satisfied. Our group was small and personal and he felt more like a friend than guide. He was extremely knowledgeable and friendly and his passion for his city was very apparent. He was able to answer all our questions and the food was delish! We only had one full day in Naples and it gave us a real taste of Naples. Thank you Marcello!😊

Katy Wessel

Aldo was a fantastic, flexible, funny guide. This was our second Eating Europe tour (first was in Rome) and both were excellent. I would highly recommend these tours in whatever city they're available in. The guides, like Aldo, give some history of the liston as well as its relation to its cuisine.

Amy Keelty

We had a great time in Naples! The hosts were so knowledgeable and relatable, very easy conversation and they both had diverse experiences to share for anyone traveling. The stops were well spaced on timing, and provided nice range of tastes/flavors. We got our steps in, but needed when eating 😊 Trying to find 1 favorite stop but there were many.....the olives, parm, salami and wine were delicious. Making my own pizza was entertaining and tasted amazing! The rooftop view made me want to move to Italy! Great 4 hours, book it!

Alyson Jones

What an amazing time we had on this walking food tour! If I could give it a 6 out of 5 (or a 11 out of 10) I would. Marcello was the best guide ever! He was warm, fun and knowledgeable. I feel we got to know about the real Naples. I also feel we made a friend. The rooftop experience was spectacular. I cannot say enough good things about this tour. Don’t miss it! Highly enjoyed…and highly recommended.

Zoé D

Aldo was absolutely wonderful, and knowledgeable beyond compare - whether it’s about the food or the history of Naples, Italy - he covers all the bases and beyond to give you an immersive experience that leaves you with the feeling of having a met a great friend, as well as incredible food experiences you wouldn’t try anywhere else in Italy. We absolutely loved it and it was worth every penny. We couldn’t recommend this more! Grazie mille Aldo!!!

Max M

Would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Naples!! We learnt so much about this fascinating city while eating delicious Neapolitan food. The sfogliatella was amazing and we liked the spaghetti omelette so much we are going to attempt to make it back home! Our guide Aldo was super knowledgeable, friendly and fun. A real food lover with a great passion for Naples. He continued to offer tips and advice throughout our time in Naples. Always quick to help. Nothing was too much trouble. A real star. 🤩

Emily Kostadinoski

Our guide was so passionate and knowledgeable, this was much more than just a gastronomic delight. He combined the history of the city with the most authentic dishes, altogether making this an unforgettable experience. Pizza was the best I have ever eaten, period. Would never ever have eaten deep-fried pasta -but you must - it's great. Highly recommended.

Auður Ösp

It's well organised tour, the tour guide is great and really knew what he was talking about. He showed so much interest in us and our experience. He gave us so good tips about what and where to taste the best things. The guide, Aldo, really made this trip and we tried things we wouldn’t have chosen our self. I give him 12 out of 10.

Emma K

Only had one day in Naples but god I wish we had more. This tour was so good and we got to try some delicious food and learn about the history of the food culture in Napoli. The walking aspect wasn’t too intense as most of the places were situated quite close together. We did the rooftop tour and it was so worthwhile, only had 1 other person in our tour group it truly felt like a private tour, would definitely recommend and can’t wait to come back to Napoli again!!!

What to Expect On a Naples Food Tour

One of the best ways to acquaint yourself with the food and to discover some of the best places to eat and drink in the city, is by taking a food tour in Naples.

We always try to schedule a food tour for the beginning of our trip, so we have time to use all of the wonderful suggestions we received, and to go back to any stops along the tour that we loved.

The Night Out in Naples tour includes 5 stops that are thoughtfully chosen to give you a fun night out, while trying some great food at local joints you likely wouldn’t have come across yourself! In all, the tour included 8 different types of food and drinks, including lots of sweets and some wine.

naples food tour sweets

The English-speaking guide has insider knowledge of Naples and the neighborhood, so you feel a bit like a star as you approach each of the stops. Our tour guide, Ben, is an American who’s been living in Naples for 20 years.

He knew each one of the shop owners personally and you could tell that he loves the city. Not only was Ben fun to chat with and full of great food and wine knowledge about Naples, he introduced us to each of the owners and filled us in on their story, which made it feel a lot more personal.

The stops on the tour may vary, and I don’t want to give away all their secrets, so I’ll just share with you a few of the tasty foods we tried along the way.

What to Expect From Pizza in Naples

pizzeria attilio outside

One of the major reasons we wanted to go to Naples was for the pizza. I’m sure there are a lot of people who would say the same. There are a ton of great (and not so great) pizza places you can stop into.

Be prepared to wait in line for a table at the most popular places. They are typically quite small and the crowds get large around lunch and dinner.

If you can, go at an off-peak time, so you can avoid the crowd. Order 2 different pizzas if you have the stomach space, so you can try more of what they offer. Don’t be afraid to ask what their most popular pizza is.

Foods You Must Try in Naples

Neopolitan pizza.

50 Kalo Margharita Pizza

Coming from the U.S., it’s pretty unlikely you’ll be prepared for Neopolitan pizza. It’s quite a bit different than the Pizza Hut and Dominos that we’re used to. But that’s what makes it so fantastic and unique.

Nick and I actually devoted quite a bit of our time in Naples to pizza. We wanted to know that we’d tried many different pizzerias to find the best pizza you can possibly eat in Naples. Life long dream, right there.

I’m happy to say that we found some really incredible pizzas. We also found some not so good ones that we would personally steer clear of next time.

The best pizzas we tried in Naples came from these pizzerias:

Pizzeria Da Attilio

  • Antico Borgo Ai Vergini

Pizzeria Da Attilio

We visited this pizzeria late on a Friday evening. At 10pm, there was a list of about 10 parties before us. We waiting about 40 minutes for a table, but it was very much worth it.

Attilio is where you’ll find the unique Giardiniera “Malvano” 8-point star-shaped pizza. Each point is filled with ricotta. We also has the Pizzeria Attilio, which is a single pizza with nine differently topped slices.

This pizza shines above the rest in Naples. The sauce and the dough are perfection.

Antico Borgo Ai Vergini

Pizzeria Borgo Ai Vergini

This pizzeria is included on the Night Out in Naples Eating Europe food tour! It was opened recently by pizza expert, Ciro Pellecchia, who has been making pizza since he was 8 years old.

He even let us try our hand at making a pizza when we visited his shop. I won’t comment on how that went… but it was worth it for such a fun experience.

You’ll surely love Ciro’s pizza. It was one of the best we tried in Naples.

Pizza to Avoid

We did stand in a very long line to try Pizzeria da Michele of Eat, Pray, Love fame, but would really not recommend it.

Not only was the line atrocious, the experience once inside was like an assembly line. Get in, get out. The pizzas are cheap, but that’s about all I can say for it. The cheese was rubbery, the sauce was bland. The dough was a little bland.

PRO TIP: If this is your only pizza stop in Naples, don’t do it. Go to Attilio instead.

Pizza Fritta

Pizza Fritta

At one time in Naples, Margarita pizza was considered a luxury because of the expensive mozzarella cheese, and that’s how pizza fritta came about.

This fried version of pizza included ragu, any cheese and bits of leftover pork, thus it was more affordable. Today, you can find pizza fritta all over naples, in many different varieties.

My suggestion is to bypass all the others in search of Isabella De Cham Pizza Fritta . Isabella, who is only in her 20s, is already considered one of the best pizza makers in Naples, and that’s saying a lot when the industry is heavily dominated by men.

The picture above is of a smaller version of Isabella’s pizza fritta (which you’ll get to try on the Eating Europe tour.

Pasta Frittatine

pasta Frittatine

There’s no way you can leave Naples without trying Pasta Frittatine. At its most basic, it’s deep-fried macaroni. But it comes in many different variations – including with ragu, minced pork, and other savory ingredients.

You can find these at restaurants, but the more convenient way to try them is at a friggitorie, which is typically a tiny hole-in-the-wall spot with a street window where you can order.

Frittatines are small, handheld and best when eaten hot. I’d suggest making sure they’re fresh when served if you get them from a window shop. Cold ones that are just handed to you from the window basket are not going to be very good.

Cuoppo

Speaking of fried food… Cuoppo is the perfect hangover food. The iconic cone is filled with a variety of tasty (and all fried) morsels. Inside a typical cone, you’ll find all manner of fried things, from fried potatoes to fried bell peppers and rice balls.

Not all cones are vegetarian. There are cones filled with meat and seafood, as well. The best place to get a Cuoppo is at a street shop along one of the main streets in Naples, like via Santa Brigida.

We stopped at Passione da Sofi for the one pictured above. The best morsels were the ones that had just recently been fried and added to the baskets that filled the shop window. Others weren’t so fresh.

Babo Rum Cake & Sfogliatella

Babo Rum Cake

Craving a little dessert? One of the best pastries we tried in Naples was Neopolitan Rum Cake, called Baba. Baba is sponge cake, typically shaped like a mushroom, and drenched in rum (and I do mean “drenched”).

Be careful when eating as it might dribble out when you bite. The outside of the pastry is drizzled with sweet syrup. Delicious. On the Eating Europe tour, you’ll have an opportunity to try these wonderful little cakes at a local bakery.

If you love them as much as I did, you’ll be able to get more at most bakeries.

Sfogliatella

See the above picture for a look at a sfogliatella. The name means “small, thin leaf”, which the layers of the pastry resembles. Its a clam-shaped flaky pastry filled with ricotta, or almond paste. small, thin leaf.

These little sugar-dusted pastries are a perfect sweet snack.

Campania Wine

Campania wine

Although wine from the Campania Wine Region just outside of Naples doesn’t get much International notoriety, there are some really fantastic varietals that you must try when you’re in Naples.

One of the most noteworthy is Aglianico, which grows well in the hot climate of Southern Italy . Aglianico is a rich and full-bodied wine. Our Eating Europe tour guide, Ben, suggested we look out for Aglianico from the Taurasi DOCG region.

We took his suggestion and we loved the wine. If you’re a white wine drinker, then Falanghina is the varietal to watch out for. One of Italy’s oldest grape varieties, having been around since Roman times.

Tours to Book:

As you can see, there are so many things to try in Naples, and these are only a small handful of the specialties you can try. Naples is definitely a foodie city.

The Night Out in Naples tour takes 3.5 hours and runs Mon-Sat at 5pm. You’ll walk all over the Sanitá neighborhood and meet some really great local artisans who take their food very seriously, and you’ll get to try a few of the best foods we’ve included on our list.

If you want to read about some of the other food tours we’ve been on with Eating Europe , check out their Prague food tour and Rome food tour .

1. naples street food tour – do eat better experience.

Taralli from Naples Italy

⭐️ Rating: 4.8/5.0 (33 Reviews) Price: $69.16 per person Duration: 3 hours 📍Piazza Dante, in front of Dante Alighieri Bookstore Operator: Do Eat Better Experience Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

They say Naples is the Italian capital of street food. And, this 3-hour Naples Street Food Tour sets out to prove just that.

Because tempting tidbits on offer during this food tour in Naples include taralli, which is a sweet or savory bread that is quite similar to a pretzel.

Then, you’ll round off your carb fix with the so-called “pizza wallet” (pizza a portafoglio) before moving onto cuoppo, Naples’s very own fish and chips.

“We chose a guide in French and finally we had a guide in English but what a joy to have met Raffaele! A guide who made us discover the history, the gastronomy and the customs of Naples. It was our first and our best memory of this stay. The food spots were well chosen, it was very good and we were able to discover the historic center. To sum up, the big highlight is the experience with the guide. The weak point is perhaps the quality/price ratio which was not totally on point from a food/price paid point of view but we quickly forget with the quality of the guide! Do not take a drink ticket, it is better to pay more on the spot, it will cost you less.” Germain ( read more reviews now )

Next up, you’ve got saucy meatballs and crocchè – potato croquettes stuffed with melted mozzarella.

Then, in terms of dessert, you’ll get your fill of tarallo (a salted almond-based biscuit) and babà (a small cake laced with rum).

Now, if you’re a coffee lover, the espresso joint you’ll visit on this tour will blow your mind.

Plus, between food stops, your local guide will dazzle you with fun facts all about the history of Naples.

But, it doesn’t stop there. Because, you’ve also got frittate di pasta, arancini, and sfogliatelle to sink your teeth into during one of the best Naples food tours of all time.

“This was the best food we have done. We got amazing local food. The guide was very interesting and loads of local knowledge. We went back to a lot of places again during our stay. We ate food that we probably would not have tried if we had not got it on the tour. I would recommend this tour on the 1st day or night of your stay so you can get a good feel for the place.” Mary ( read more reviews now )

Actually, this tour has a heck of a lot of food to offer you. So, you’ll want to rock up with an appetite.

⭐️ Rating: 4.8/5.0 (13 Reviews) Price: $42.56 per person Duration: 2 hours 📍 Meeting Point: Next to the Obelisk Operator: Napoli Official Tour Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

After a rendezvous with your group in Piazza del Gesù Nuovo, this 3-hour tour explores the food, history, and culture of two neighborhoods.

Then, you’ll head to Quartieri Spagnoli, the Spanish Quarter, with its tight-knit network of apartment blocks, stores, and restaurants.

Your guide will then usher you through the La Pignasecca – the oldest market in Naples.

“A lovely guide. Very prepared. Not only did he pass on his knowledge to us, but he also shared with us his passion for Naples and, in addition, he spoke Spanish very well.” Spanish Traveler ( read more reviews now )

But, rather than being a traditional, covered marketplace, Pignasecca is open-air.

And on offer, you’ll find fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, seafood, and Neopolitan street staples.

So, dig into fried alici (anchovies) and parigina – a mashup of pizza and a pastry.

Plus, vendors congregate here to sell clothing, accessories, and household items.

However, this isn’t one of the typical Naples food tours. Really, it’s a sightseeing tour with the option to purchase food items at the market.

However, this is one of the best food tours in Naples that offers you an exciting chance to explore one of the most charming neighborhoods in Naples while enjoying graffa (Neapolitan donuts).

Also be on the lookout for pastiera, a Neapolitan tart with ricotta and orange flavorings.

For that reason, it’s an awesome pick for foodie-minded travelers with mobility concerns.

On the other hand, the Wine and Food Tasting in a Historical Winery is an epic pick for a special date night.

Because this tasting takes place in one of the city’s oldest watering holes. In fact, this bar has been keeping Neapolitans happy for over 60 years.

“Excellent value for money. On the other hand, be aware that it is not in the wine cellar of the bar that the tasting takes place as we thought, but on the terrace. Which we appreciated all the more given the good weather. The server was very welcoming and friendly. I recommend !” Lisa ( read more reviews now )

And during your tour, the table will be laden with only some of the most authentic pizza in the home of pizza.

But, this will be accompanied by Campanian cheeses, cold cuts, plump olives, and bruschetta topped with fresh basil and regional ingredients.

“What a fun afternoon! Elizabeth was an excellent tour guide, prompt, a pleasant conversationalist and a great resource for local Mexican food. Her communication prior to and during the tour ensured a very fun excursion. She met us at a convenient location, drove safely to all of our four eateries and guided us through our menu choices. We let her do all the ordering and were not sorry, she knows good food. She took us to neighborhood restaurants that we would have never found on our own, in fact we had previously thought we'd exhausted our Mexican options in the area only to be very pleasantly surprised at the quaint locations and delicious food she introduced us to.”

In 2010, she tried her first authentic street tacos from an old 7/11 in a back alley.

THE FOUNDER'S FOODIE JOURNEY

Meet Liz Valdez,

Owner and Founder

Growing up in rural Ohio, I never experienced authentic food from other cultures. I moved to Naples, Florida in 2009 with my husband and he took me to the old 7 convenience store in a back alley where they had a taco stand. I'd never tried anything so scary and so delicious at the same time! This experience was the beginning of Driven Foodie Tours.

Naples City Guide

Traditions are still everything in Naples. The city prides itself on San Marzano tomatoes, which are grown nearby and are considered by many to be the best in the world, as well as the finest Lacryma Christi vines, ripened by stroking sea winds and the sun beating down on Vesuvius. The region produces the creamiest buffalo mozzarella in the world and grows its own indigenous broccoli, called friarelli. Cultivation methods are written into law to regulate producers, making it impossible to cut corners on quality. This abundance of produce then finds its way from fertile volcanic soil into the neighborhood markets, and locals take it home and cook it with care according to ancient recipes.

By publishing the stories of our local heroes, visiting them on culinary tours, or directly fundraising for them when they are in need, we attempt to honor their work and their essential role in maintaining the fabric of the city. Our purpose is twofold. Yes, we want to get travelers to some good places to eat. But we also want to make sure that some of these spots and the artisans making food there find a new audience and get the recognition and support they deserve. They are holding back the tide of globalized sameness, which is not easy work – even if it’s done unknowingly. But we believe that every meal counts and, with the help of our audience, they will add up. We are committed to their perseverance and hope that our modest efforts encourage them to keep at it. Our work is also guided by a belief in: Honest Tourism: The places where we eat and craftsmen that we feature on our culinary tours are all selected with this purpose in mind. We’d never accept a free lunch or consider a discount for our tour groups, because that would contradict our central goal, to support them. Nor do our guides receive any commissions from shopkeepers. Honest Journalism: The same principal is applied to the publishing of stories. There are no sponsored posts or even advertising on CB. The writers and photographers are paid fairly for their work on stories that we all believe in.

The cities we are drawn to all have a culinary tradition of untold richness as well as a certain tension, be it political instability, the tug between East and West, the clash between modern and ancient identities, migration, rapid gentrification, bankruptcy, or a post-colonial hangover. Our decision to get started in a city is always the result of a trip filled with many meals where we are given in intimate view of that tension, right there on the table. By getting lost in this warren of independent food purveyors struggling to preserve or adapt tradition in fast-paced urban life, we start to discover the deep complexity and true flavor of the city. At present, you’ll find our regular dispatches from Athens, Barcelona, Istanbul, Lisbon, Los Angeles, Marseille, Mexico City, Naples, Porto, Queens (NY), Shanghai, Tbilisi and Tokyo.

  • Reducing group size: Our small group tours just got smaller. During the initial reopening period, tours will be private at no additional charge. That means that the tour will only be you, your travel companions and your Culinary Backstreets guide.
  • Disinfection: Our guides carry hand sanitizer and provide it to guests frequently while also encouraging them to wash hands whenever a sink is available. Our guides also carry disinfecting wipes to clean surfaces during the tour or trip.
  • Maintaining social distancing requirements: Our guides maintain social distancing during tours and trips, according to regulations issued by local health authorities.
  • Wearing masks: Our guides and guests wear masks wherever required by local regulations. We request that guests come to the tour with their own mask, although our guides will provide masks to those who do not have one.
  • Visiting restaurants safely: Our tours and trips only visit restaurants and shops that are adhering to official safety standards and regulations and, where applicable, have been certified as such. We also avoid visiting restaurants during peak times so that they are less crowded and in order to not displace hungry locals. In restaurants and shops, our guides make sure that guests adhere to the establishments’ social distancing rules and ascertain whether the rules are being followed by other diners.
  • Tasting food safely: Our guides make sure that food is sampled and distributed safely and according to local health regulations.
  • Vaccinated guides: Most Culinary Backstreets guides have been vaccinated, and the few remaining are testing themselves regularly while they wait for the jab.

Sustainability

  • Going local: Our food tours and culinary trips continue to feature independent, family-run businesses and spotlight local products and small producers.
  • Respecting local needs: Since new regulations require restaurants to limit their seating, we will make sure that our tours and trips don’t displace local patrons.
  • Honoring tradition: We continue to honor the traditions of the communities we work with by promoting their cultural and culinary heritage.
  • Preserving community memory: By telling the stories of the unsung culinary heroes of these communities, we continue to help preserve community memory and keep the unique spirit of neighborhoods and their local businesses alive.
  • Expressing appreciation: Human contact with the local community is one of the joys of our tours and trips and the reason many of us travel. Despite the requirements of social distancing, we continue to safely express our appreciation of all the culinary masters we meet along the way.
  • Supporting independent businesses: Small, independent businesses are what make our cities and their culinary landscape so spectacular. These businesses — from neighborhood bodega in Barcelona to grill joints in Tokyo — are highly vulnerable these days and it is particularly challenging for them to adapt to the new conditions. Our support, now more than ever, is particularly important.
  • Reducing ground transportation: Conscious of the carbon footprint of our tours and trips, we are redoubling our effort to keep our tours and trips, as much as possible, on foot.
  • Reducing single-use plastic: We are working to reduce single-use plastics on all of our tours and trips, most significantly water bottles. We encourage guests to bring their own water bottle which we can refill throughout the day. We’re also persuading restaurants to offer filtered water as an alternative to plastic bottles.

Book with Confidence

  • Culinary Tours: 100% refund if cancelled up to 7 days prior to the tour date.
  • Multi-Day Trips: 100% refund if cancelled up to 90 days prior to the trip date.
  • In addition to the policies above, late cancellations will be given a 100% credit for future Culinary Backstreets activities.

Our Backstreets Envoys, Always Searching for the Next Hidden Gem

Amedeo, Naples Bureau Chief

After 25 years in a career in communications, Amedeo finally succumbed to his true calling, dedicating his life to the study of a phenomenon that he calls “Neapolitan way of living”. The city’s unique cuisine, music, literature and local dialect are all a part of his ongoing research and the subject of lectures he gives at a local university. He is the author of several books about Naples, including Mangia Napoli, the definitive guide to eating in Naples and operates a publishing house called, Cultura Nova. His passion for Naples is best experienced walking with him in the backstreets, where he knows everyone by name and, most importantly, where to find the very best bites of the city.

Chiara, Naples Walk Leader

Sicily-born Chiara moved to Naples in order to attend the Oriental Languages University and fell hard for the unique city. As a professional guide, Chiara finds her work to be the perfect expression of all her interests such as art, archeology, history, culture, food, communication; in one word, her passion for her city.

Debora is a professional guide, and a proud Neapolitan. From the ancient alleys of Pompeii to the backstreets of Centro Storico, she feels right at home. Growing up just outside the old city walls means she knows the fishmonger and taralli baker on a first-name basis and she has strong opinions on who makes the best sfogliatelle in town. As a culinary guide, she sees herself as a bridge between visitors to the city and the culture-bearers of Neapolitan gastronomic heritage, hard at work in the kitchens around the city.

Francesca Russo is first and foremost a “Napoletana verace”, a true blue citizen of Naples, and her love of the city is infectious. For more than a decade she has been sharing her favorite parts of Naples as a professional guide. From the grand palaces to the humble backstreet trattoria, she’s always on the hunt for people and places that express the true identity of the city. She drives a vintage Fiat Uno, loves scuba diving and cycling. She makes a divine Neapolitan ragu.

Gianni, Naples Photographer

Gianni Cipriano is a Sicilian-born independent photographer based in Napoli, Italy. His work focuses on contemporary social, political and economic issues. Gianni regularly works for The New York Times and has been documenting the ongoing upheaval in Italian politics for L’Espresso weekly magazine since 2013. His editorial work has also appeared in Time, Wired, The Wall Street Journal, Le Monde Magazine, The Guardian Weekend Magazine, among others. He graduated from the Documentary Photography and Photojournalism Program at the International Center of Photography in New York in 2008. He has received recognition and awards from POYI (Picture of the Year International), American Photography, New York Photo Awards, International Photography Awards and the the Ian Parry Scholarship. Gianni’s work has been showcased in group exhibitions in venues such as the Rencontres d’Arles, FOLI Lima Biennale of Photography, MOPLA, Lumix Festival for Young Photojournalism and at the MAXXI museum in Rome.

Giuseppe, Naples Correspondent

100% Neapolitan in the heart, blood and soul, Giuseppe – or, as everyone calls him, Peppe – worked his way around the world with a number of jobs. During the years he developed a passion for travel and food writing and has now found his true calling: educating the world on everything there’s to know about pizza, his favorite food. He has spent the last 10 years spreading the pizza gospel by any possible means: through his blog pizzadixit.com, writing articles for magazines, setting up events, hosting a podcast, publishing a newsletter and in any other way. When he’s in Naples (or even traveling), you’ll most likely find him sitting in a pizzeria.

Luciana, Naples Correspondent Born and raised in Naples, Luciana has been working as a journalist and food critic for more than 15 years, contributing to Italian and foreign guides and magazines such as Gambero Rosso, Identità Golose, Reporter Gourmet, Italy Magazine, Great Italian Chefs and Eater. She is currently senior editor at Food & Wine Italia and is co-founder and editor at Pizzaontheroad.eu. A professional olive oil taster, she loves to trek around the Italian hills and mountains, travel all over the world and taste everything but snails.

Sara, Naples Photographer

Sara graduated with full marks and honor in Architecture in 2013 at the University Federico II in Naples, Italy, with a thesis on the temporary reuse of abandoned spaces in the historical center of Naples and a mapping of its architectural objects. After her graduation she studied photography and worked as an assistant for a documentary photographer for one year. In 2014 she won a scholarship for a PhD in Urban Design at the University Federico II. Her research interests lie in the strategies for temporary reuse of abandoned space, visual representation of territories and the stories that live within.

Sonia, Naples Walk Leader Born and raised in Naples, Sonia studied art history, archaeology and Oriental languages before working for years as a schoolteacher. Eventually, her true passion- frescoed churches, incredibly rich archaeological sites, the cuisine and street life of Naples- led her out of the classroom and into the streets. Now, as a professional guide, Sonia gets to spend all of her time with her beloved subjects. Sonia is eager to challenge contemporary stereotypes of Naples by showing off the city’s classical beauty, hospitality and unique cuisine .

Stefania, Naples Walk Leader Naples native Stefania is truly in love with her hometown. Living in the buzzing heart of the city and working as a professional guide, her daily life is infused with the art, culture and gastronomy which make the city so special. But her favorite aspect of Neopolitan life is experiencing the city’s living culture: talking to the producers whose hands make mozzarella, pick tomatoes, knead pizza dough and sharing that connection with visitors to the city.

Maria Anna, Naples Walk Leader Born in Avellino, Maria Anna has since she was a little girl always enjoyed speaking in English with people from other parts of the world. An art history major, she started her professional life in architecture, one of the many passions that allows her to daydream. Both curious and gluttonous, Maria Anna was lucky enough to be born into a southern Italian family in which traditions are still very important, especially when it comes to food. On Saturday nights there is never a lack of pizza on the family table, made by Maria Anna using the wood-fired oven she has at home, just as her mom and grandmother used to make. She has long approached food with extreme curiosity, liking to not only learn the secrets of the dishes she was eating but to also to know their history. As a result, she has many stories to tell and hopes our guests will appreciate hearing them.

CB’s work was started in 2009 by Ansel Mullins and Yigal Schleifer as a humble food blog called Istanbul Eats. The following year we published a book of our reviews, now in its fifth edition. That year we also launched our first culinary walk in Istanbul, a route we are still using today. In 2012, we realized that what we built in Istanbul was needed in other cities we knew and loved. We started CB that year with Athens, Barcelona, Mexico City and Shanghai as pioneering members of our network. In 2013, we added Rio and also launched our iPhone application in Istanbul. In 2015, Tokyo and Tbilisi came into the fold. That year we published mini-guides to Barcelona and Athens and also launched an iPhone application in those cities. Our Eatinerary service, which provides travelers with tailor-made culinary travel itineraries, was also launched in 2015. In 2016, Lisbon – the latest city to kindle our curiosity – joined the CB network. In 2017 we added Naples and Queens, NY – two places with very compelling stories to tell – to our roster and also published full-size eating guides to Athens and Barcelona. In 2018, Porto joined the list of cities we cover.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry.

Where is Naples?

Naples is a city in the Campania region in the south of Italy. Located in the center of the Mediterranean, it has been influenced by every corner of this sea: language, art, culture and, of course, gastronomy. Naples is the third-largest city in Italy in terms of population, after Milan and Rome, and is the cultural capital of southern Italy.

What are the best things to do in Naples?

A city founded by the Greeks, which then became Roman, Naples has more than 3,000 years of history and culture to explore. The ancient city center is entirely protected by UNESCO, and here it is possible to feast on the best pizza in the world – in the city where pizza was born. There are historic monuments, art galleries and architectural works to visit, as well as the seaside. Just half an hour by train is the most-visited archaeological site in the world, the lost city of Pompeii.

When is the best time of year to visit Naples?

The best time of year to visit Naples is from April to June and from September to October. The temperature is almost always mild, and even in winter it is often possible to eat outside. In April, there are Easter celebrations with a lot of different foods on offer. May is a month of culture, with many cultural heritage sites open into the evening. December is particularly festive, with Nativity scenes and Christmas sweets all over the city. August is hot and the city is quiet, with many businesses closed.

What is the weather like in Naples?

Naples has a typically Mediterranean climate: The winters are mild and quite rainy while the summers are hot and sunny. It never snows, though once in a while can you admire a white-tipped Vesuvius from the city. It rains often in autumn, which is the rainy season, but it is still nice to be out, even in the rain. Summers are warm, with little rain, and the average temperature is just under 80 F. There are no real extreme climates in Napes, so anytime is worth a visit.

Is Naples expensive?

Prices in Naples are much lower when compared to the United States, and especially when compared to other European cities. The average price of a 3-star hotel in Naples is about $100. A cup of coffee costs just about $1, a simple beer about $2, and a sit-down dinner can run about $30. In many of our favorite backstreets restaurants, you can have a full meal for $10 a person. A metro ticket is just over $1.

Is Naples safe?

There’s no denying that Naples has always had a bad reputation. But with its status as a top tourist destination, it has become a safer place for visitors. Today, neighborhoods once-considered dangerous, such as Sanità or the Spanish Quarter, have become incredibly popular for tourists. Like any big city, it is best to remain cautious of your possessions while in a crowd, and to pay attention to your surroundings when alone.

What is the best food in Naples?

The most famous dish of Naples is hands down the pizza. The art of the Neapolitan pizza makers is UNESCO protected, after all. Every Neapolitan has their favorite pizzeria, but the quality level is high everywhere. There are no gas or electric ovens, only wood – otherwise it is not true Neapolitan pizza. Neapolitan cuisine has even more to offer than its delectable pizza. It is it is essential to taste Neapolitan ragù, a dish where meat and tomato cooks for many hours. The Genovese is a dish not to be missed as well: a sea of onions and meat. Eggplant Parmigiana is another dish born in Naples that is famous worldwide. Don’t miss the Neapolitan broccoli, a kind of broccoli typical of the region.

Where is the best place to stay in Naples?

Each neighborhood has something to offer. Chiaia is an elegant spot near the sea, and makes for a lovely area to stay in Naples. For those making their first contact with the city, accommodation in the historic center is always a good bet. For those who have been to Naples before, venturing out to Sanità or the Spanish Quarter are also good options.

What is the Covid-19 situation in Naples?

The Italian vaccination rate is at about 84%. Masks are no longer required in open spaces. Mask are only necessary on public transport, cinemas, theaters and hospitals.

Can Americans travel to Naples?

A proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test are necessary on arrival for most tourists. U.S. citizens are permitted to enter visa-free for up to 90 days.

Can I fly directly to Naples?

International Airport of Capodichino is the airport serving Naples. It is a small airport with connections to many European cities. There are direct flights from New York with United Airlines. The airport is very close to the center, a 10-minute drive. From the airport, you can take a 3 euro shuttle bus that will bring you to the central station or the historical center.

What is the best restaurant in Naples?

Naples has an immense number of incredible restaurants. For breakfast, head to an espresso bar for sfogliatella and coffee. Have lunch in a tucked-away trattoria, like pasta at Mangia e bevi or Neapolitan classics at Spiedo d’oro. Book a table for dinner at a slightly more elegant spot, such as Ristorantino dell’Avvocato or Buatta in the Vomero district. Check out our list of 10 essential Naples food spots for more ideas on where to eat in Naples.

Are there beaches in Naples?

The closest beaches to Naples are in Posillipo. You can get there in about half an hour on the metro (line 2, Mergellina stop). If you want to spend a day by the sea, you can take a ferry to Capri, Ischia or Procida. Just one hour by car is the stunning Amalfi Coast – Positano and Sorrento will blow you away.

Is Naples suitable for children?

Naples is a welcoming city for children. There is an abundance of choice in things to do and eat that kids will love. Restaurants always have simple food for the little ones; typically Italian children love macaroni with sauce and cutlets. And, what kids don’t like pizza! Art and culture are also adaptable to children’s tastes in Naples. In the National Archaeological Museum, workshops are organized to explain archeology to children; at the Madre Museum, there are often workshops to explain contemporary art as well. The streets of the old town are stone, but pushing a stroller isn’t too difficult. Crowded areas in the evening that might be better avoided include the Chiaia nightlife area, the Quartieri Spagnoli and Piazza Bellini.

The strategy: To acquire "good businesses or good properties, with really good people behind them – all with the potential and drive to be better," according to the Hoffmann website .
