The Ultimate Guide to visiting the Shakespeares Globe

Shakespeare's globe ultimate guide.

Nestled near the Tate Modern and the Millennium Bridge, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre may seem a little out of place. It was, after all, designed after the original Globe Theatre which was built in 1599 (and then later rebuilt in 1614 after it was destroyed by a fire).

When it was first constructed, the Globe Theatre was located in the epicentre of London’s entertainment district on the Bankside in Southwark. Performances were put on by the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, and it is said that Shakespeare himself even sat in the theatre to watch his own performances.

The modern-day Globe Theatre is an oak-and-thatch replica of the original 1599 Elizabethan playhouse (which once sat about 200 metres from where the Globe stands today), and as a result concertgoers will feel as if they’ve been transported back to Elizabethan times when watching a performance.

Today the theatre serves as an open-air venue dedicated to the work of Shakespeare, and some of the many performances visitors can still watch at the playhouse include A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth, The Taming of the Shrew, and many, many more. Depending on the time of year, several plays, operas, comedy shows and candlelit concerts are held inside the playhouse as well.

Visitors can sit on the wooden benches (which can sit up to 340 people) surrounding the stage, or in any of the two tiers of galleried seating, and there are also productions, talks and courses held in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse (a candlelit indoor theatre located inside the Globe’s building). Attendees can even stand in the yard directly in front of the stage, just as they did in the original theatre during Elizabethan times. It's a great place to visit on your own or with a guide on a walking tour, so you can dive into the history of arts in London.

Special Tips

Getting There

Visiting the globe theatre.

Be sure to check the weather forecast before booking your tickets, as the standing area is open-air and exposed to the elements. Since umbrellas are not allowed, it's wise to bring a raincoat and warm shoes. If you’re worried about standing in the rain, there are seats available that are protected under a sound roof.

Keep in mind that the cloakroom is closed, so you’ll need to store any large bags offsite. Only necessary medical equipment and buggies are permitted. Photography and video recording are not allowed during workshops, performances, screenings, or tours, and photography may be restricted at certain times.

Assisted performances, such as relaxed, captioned, audio-described, and signed, are available. Check the official website in advance to book your spot.

The Swan Bar & Restaurant, located next to Shakespeare’s Globe, offers indoor and outdoor seating with stunning views of St. Paul’s Cathedral across the river. They serve drinks, dining, afternoon tea, weekend brunch, Sunday roasts, and more.

If you plan to visit the shop, please note that it currently only accepts contactless payments.

Ticket prices and Opening Hours

Due to the open-air nature of the Globe Theatre, most performances are held from mid-April to mid-October. During the winter season, many performances take place in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, with a few special events held in the Globe Theatre itself.

The Shakespeare’s Globe Story & Tour runs year-round and is usually available several times a day. Visitors must book their time slot in advance through the official website. The prices for the tour are as follows:

  • Under 16: £20

All tours can be booked with a 10% donation, and transactions through the website incur a £2.50 commission fee.

For Shakespeare performances, seat ticket costs range depending on visibility. There are 700 standing tickets available (which offer the best views of the stage) and cost £5 each. Seating tickets for the lower, middle and upper galleries cost anywhere between £25 and £75.

This Tour Of The Globe Theatre Transports You To Shakespearean Times

Step back in time and experience Shakespeare's London in this Globe Theatre experience.

Sam Barker

Calling all actors, poets, linguists, playwrights, and lovers of the Bard – your chance has come to go back in time and live as Shakespeare would have. For a short while, at least. Visitors to the Globe Theatre are being offered the chance to visit the time of Shakespeare as part of the new Shakespeare’s Globe Story & Tour experience.

Participants will get a guided tour of the world-famous theatre, with Guides bringing the history of the iconic stage to life. You’ll be captivated as they tell you how the Globe survived fire and plague before rising again on the banks of the River Thames in the 1990s. But that’s not all…

Immersing yourself in Shakespeare’s time

Visitors will also gain access to a brand-new interactive exhibition. Here kids of all ages can have a go at creating a thunderstorm on stage as they would have done it in Shakespeare’s time. Or perhaps you’d like to take your chance with some Elizabethan London smelling boxes(!) ? You could even live out your stage fantasies as you try on some of the Globe’s iconic costumes and props!

two people taking a selfie while dressed up in over-the-top stage costumes from the globe

Fret not, though, you won’t need to truly inhabit Shakespeare’s world. There will be no real back-stabbing, teenage love affairs, or witches decreeing the next king of Scotland. At least, we don’t think so… And speaking in old-timey Shakespearean English is wholly voluntary, or so we’re led to believe. But you may end up getting a behind-the-scenes look at an in-the-works production when you visit.

a family standing on the ground in front of the globe theatre's iconic stage

The immersive Globe theatre tour is conducted in (modern) English, with information sheets available in several languages. And they’re pretty well-versed in inclement weather at the Globe, given that they’re an open-air theatre. As such, the tour will take place in all weathers. Make sure you dress appropriately!

The Shakespeare’s Globe Story & Tour experience takes place seven days a week. Tickets are £25 for adults, and £18 for under-16’s.

Experience the greek islands on a small group walking tour.

The caldera hike from Fira to Oia is one of the best ways to explore the island of Santorini.

It’s no surprise that the Greek islands, especially Santorini, Naxos, and Paros, are not only well loved, but also, teeming with tourists during the peak summer season. If you’ve always wanted to experience the Cyclades islands, the most popular island group in the Aegean Sea, yet you want to see it without crowds, there are smart ways to make your dream a reality.

First of all, you’ll want to wander the snaking cobblestone streets, flanked by distinctive white and cream architecture and tiny blue-domed chapels, during the shoulder seasons. You’ll be rewarded with fewer vacationers beelining to the sandy beaches, and the weather will be more favorable when it comes to the heat index.

Exploring the Cyclades island on foot is a stellar experience for intrepid travelers.

Second, enlist the services of a small group tour operator. Exodus Adventure Travels , for example, specializes in small group active adventures for folks traveling with friends, family, or solo. This long-standing company, which has been thriving since 1974, focuses on responsible tourism through a myriad of efforts including recruiting local guides, helping global communities, and caring for the environment through their People, Places & Planet plan.

Every organized trip encourages guests to bring reusable water bottles and toiletry containers, save itineraries and documents on phones rather than printing them out, and reduce resource consumption while staying in hotels (turning off the air conditioning when not in room, taking shorter showers, reusing towels, etc.). You can feel good knowing that by traveling in a small group, you’ll minimize the impact on not only the local communities that depend on tourism, but also, the natural environments where you’ll practice “Leave No Trace” principles.

The relaxed environment, with panoramic sea views, draws vacationers to the Greek islands each year. ... [+]

The Walking on the Greek Islands tour, which utilizes family owned and operated accommodations, is an eight-day adventure for ages 16 and over. Highlights include gentle ambles in Santorini, Paros, and Naxos where you’ll learn about local communities, historical and architectural gems, and geological wonders. You’ll have the same knowledgeable guide throughout, who will not only provide valuable context to what you experience each day, but also, take care of all of the logistics, including the ferry and bus schedules, so that you can simply enjoy the sights, sounds, and tastes of the Cyclades islands.

Thano Mamas, one of the local tour guides that has been leading tours in Greece for 25 years, knows the best locally owned island restaurants to whet your appetite and wet your whistle. Likely, he’ll fill you in on Greek fava, a delicious dip that is accompanied by bread, olives, and sometimes cheese; tzatziki, a yogurt, cucumber, and garlic staple for any meal; tomato heavy Greek salad, which Thano says helps prevent sunburns; and syrupy sweet baklava. “It’s divine,” says Mamas.

Walkers are rewarded with sunshine and incredible views on this island.

From the moment you step off the ferry, you’ll be entranced by the imposing volcanic island of Santorini, also known as Thira. Popular for a reason, you’ll experience the land in a striking way by walking along the caldera from Fira to Oia, one of the best adventures of the week. This cliffside footpath, perched high above the Mediterranean, is a photographer’s fantasy with panoramic views as far as the eye can see. The crunch of the volcanic soil, dirt, and pumice under your boots will certainly be a core memory.

The island of Paros is a full sensory delight.

As with other islands in the Cyclades, marble is king and in Paros it’s no different. From beautiful villages like Parikia, the capital of Paros to the Virgin Mary church, Ekatontapyliani to a Venetian castle set high on the hill in the traditional town, there’s much to see and experience here. Spot wind surfers on the water and enjoy the sand and sea—you’re in Greece after all! On the tour, you’ll experience part of the island on foot as you wander on a rocky path over small hills. Don’t be surprised if you see strung octopus while wandering by the sea.

Olive and citrus groves abound on the island of Naxos.

Nestled in the heart of the Cyclades, Naxos is the largest and most lush island in the cluster. The charming, whitewashed town of Old Chora, complete with cobblestone alleys and Venetian architecture, is accessible directly from the ferry, making it easy to whittle the day away shopping and noshing on delectable Greek food and beverages. With Greek mythology flooding your senses, you’ll enjoy a ramble through the valley of Tragea where olive and lemon trees dominate the scenery, and you’ll spend time at the Temple of Apollo in the Venetian Castello town of Hora.

“Here is the grave of Emmanoyha,” says Mamas. “He lived to 100.”

Experiencing the tastes of Greece, with a view of the sea, is best at sunset.

Good to Know: Peak tourist season for Greece is summer and you can expect not only more tourists, but also, higher prices in hotels and restaurants. Weather-wise, July and August are also the hottest months of the year. If traveling during the summer, be sure to book early and pack plenty of sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.

The shoulder seasons of spring and fall are arguably the best times to visit Greece. Some sights and attractions on the islands may be operating with limited hours or closed all together in the off and near-off season, however, so be sure to check ahead before you visit.

Feel the rumble, see the sights: Airboats just as popular in Volusia as in the Everglades

globe experience & tour

This is an occasional series on things to do in Volusia and Flagler counties during the summer months. Today, Reporter Colleen Jones takes us on a first-person airboat ride.

It's the first airboat tour of the morning and Capt. Joshua Mattson is hoping with the weather at a dry 75 degrees, surface water temperatures moderate and clear skies overhead, we'll have better luck than he did the day before spotting alligators, fish, birds and other critters who make the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge their home.

"We'll just get out there and see what we find moving," he tells me matter-of-factly.

Mattson, with his trademark red beard, sunglasses and ball cap, is the owner of Airboat & Gator Charters, an operation in DeLeon Springs which he runs with wife Brittany ― he captains the boat; she books the tours. The house the couple shares with their two sons, ages 16 and 6, runs right up to the lake's dock.

"I saw 'The Big 12' recently ― I have little pet names for them," Mattson says, referring in this case to the hulking, 12-foot gator he spies now and then in his travels (he assumes it's a male since most of the larger of its species are). "He showed up for a few days and then went away again until about two days ago."

Seafaring novice that I am, I carefully step off from the pier and into the vessel for our voyage, holding onto the side for support. The airboat is steadier than I'd imagined, and I tell Mattson so.

"It's a smooth, level ride," Mattson confirms, adding that in his 15 years in the business there's been only one person ― an older woman ― he wasn't able to convince to at least try it out with the promise to return them safely back to land if not comfortable.

The boat is arranged with stadium seating, so to speak, this model accommodating six guests with the operator at the helm in the highest look-out perch.

Carl Hiaasen and more on the lore of airboats

Airboats are part of the culture of Florida , especially what some like to call "Old Florida" ― wetland areas like the Everglades which author and retired Miami Herald journalist Carl Hiaasen made the backdrop for much of his writing. Of course, in Central Florida, a network of freshwater lakes, springs, creeks and marshes, has always been a popular playground for enthusiasts as well.

First called a "hydro-glisseur" and used by the British during World War II, this surface-gliding watercraft, also referred to as a "fan boat," "bayou boat" or "plane boat," is flat bottomed with large engine-powered propellers at the rear. This one is equipped with the kind of 6.2-liter engine usually found in Corvettes, the good captain informs me. It can get up to speeds of 40 mph or more on the water, but for optimal cruising he usually sets it at about 20 mph.

"If you go any faster, you can't keep up with the wildlife," Mattson says.

What makes airboats ideal for ecotours is they can get into areas other boats can't, like totally or partially submerged coastal marshes, easily skating across the surface of the water and even thickets of vegetation.

And let's talk about that greenery for a minute. We skim over lily-covered clusterings that form an oasis on the muddy waters beneath, and not long after we're out in the open vista of the deepest parts of the lake ― varying from depths of about three to seven feet ― taking in the scenery of palm trees, drippy Spanish moss and willow branches decorating its edges.

Rides are a feast for the senses

An airboat ride is a feast for the senses, not the least of which is the rumbling of the propeller engine at the stern of the boat. Riders are provided with headphones to take the edge off that pulsating roar. Equipped with his own set, Mattson is able to broadcast a running commentary of all the sights to be seen along the way.

When other boats are nearby, the wake rocks the boat either gently or more vigorously, and the spray of the water, especially when turning on a dime, is a refreshing shower.

On this day, conditions are pretty good for gator sightings, Mattson says. The weather is mild and spring mating season also brings out the more randy of the reptiles.

"See that over there that looks like a silver log? That's a good sized one," Mattson says, pointing across the silvery surface of the waterscape. "You won't see the little ones that far away."

The captain's expertise comes in part from his lineage as a lifelong, third-generation Floridian; the rest is from personal experience and observances.

"That bubble trail there?" Mattson says. "That's a softshell turtle right there."

Other wildlife native to the ecosystem are birds like bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, herons, sandhill cranes and egrets, as well as jumping mullet and a variety of other freshwater fish.

Less common are turtles, manatees, river otters, deer, racoons, and even bobcats. Mattson is happy when his riders are able to see as much as they can on any given trip out on the water.

He can run anywhere from no tours per day to as many as four (not including night rides), mostly depending on the weather.

Visitors from across the nation, globe

Joshua and Brittany Mattson have seen folks from nearly every state of the country as well as international visitors from Europe, Asia and many other nations making the airboat ride as a side trip to travels to Orlando or Daytona Beach.

The couple's best testimony to their airboat tours is the fact that they have a lot of repeat customers, like the group of four from Wisconsin who are waiting on the dock when we pull up and set down anchor to disembark.

"What did y'all find out there?" one woman asks.

I tell her we were able to see a lot and that hopefully they will, too.

"We're in good hands," she says, "I know that."

Our expert guide-storytellers will provide your group with a fascinating tour of the Globe Theatre auditorium, vividly recreating colourful stories of the 1599 Playhouse, the London Shakespeare would have known and the Globe reconstruction process in the 1990s.

Our guides will also bring the theatre to life, exploring how the wooden ‘O’ works today as an imaginative and experimental space for performance.

You’ll also have the opportunity to explore our brand-new, walk-through exhibition space. Immerse your group in the sights, sounds, and secrets of Shakespeare’s London, travelling through over 400 years of fascinating history.
