Discover Santa Fe with Museum-Trained Docents

Your guide takes you through the heart of the city. From the ancient plaza to the state capitol building, you’ll explore the intriguing history, diverse architecture, and unique atmosphere of one of the United States’ oldest and most notable capital cities. Our volunteer docents are the only Santa Fe tour guides trained under the auspices of the New Mexico History Museum, with dozens of hours classroom time, self-study, and supervised practice. You only experience the true stories and genuine facts of Santa Fe's extraordinary history.

All tour proceeds are donated to the New Mexico History Museum to support educational programs and exhibitions.

Tour Times and Pricing

Public Walking Tours of Historic Downtown Santa Fe are on winter hiatus until April 3, 2024.  For April and May, we will offer public tours Wednesday through Sunday at 10:15am.

We are still accepting reservations for custom and group tours in March and times outside our regular public tours when the season begins April 3.  See below for details.

Tours start beside the entrance to the New Mexico History Museum, 113 Lincoln Avenue, one-half block north of the Santa Fe Plaza. We ask that you arrive at 10am so the tour can begin promptly.

Our tours are an amazing value! Fees are $25 for adults 18 and older, $15 for children 8 to 17, and no charge for children under 8.

Custom and Group Tours

Custom and group tours can be scheduled at your convenience (major holidays excepted).  Regular tour fees apply with a $150 minimum.  Dates and times are subject to docent availability. For information contact [email protected] .

Friends of History members receive a 20% discount for themselves and the guests who accompany them; members, please email us at [email protected]  to book.

Where to Park

Because many on-street parking meters have a two-hour limit, we recommend that you park in one of the public parking structures or lots. Click here for a map of parking areas .

Where to Meet

Meet your docent  at the Lincoln Avenue entrance to the New Mexico History Museum, 113 Lincoln Avenue, outside in the covered area to the left of the blue door.

Walking Tours of Historic Downtown Santa Fe will provide you with an up-close glimpse of the vibrant and multicultural history of the Land of Enchantment’s capital city. On your tour, our well-trained and historically knowledgeable guides will lead you on an unforgettable journey through Santa Fe’s past.

Tours visit eighteen historic sites and structures and explore the interiors of two historic buildings.  On the one and one-half mile walk you will discover:

  • How the Villa de Santa Fe became the capital of “The Kingdom of New Mexico” and the oldest capital city in the U.S.
  • Why the 1680 Pueblo Revolt was one of the most successful indigenous peoples rebellions in history.
  • How Santa Fe became the center of an international network of trade routes despite being at least 1000 miles from the trails’ destinations.
  • Why an unassuming little office at 109 East Palace Avenue was crucial to the success of the Manhattan project and the birth of the Atomic Age.
  • How a Catholic priest from France managed to build a grand stone cathedral in a town of little mud houses.
  • Why New Mexico is the only state in the U.S. with a round capitol building.
  • How a group of anthropologists, artists, and writers created the Santa Fe we know and love today.

Downtown Santa Fe Walking Tours (New Season)

Filed Under: Things to do · by Thomas Charlton

Santa Fe is a fascinating cultural melting pot, packed with history, character, and experiences to suit every taste.

We’ve assembled our own list of the best walking tours in the city and, unlike other publishers, we don’t receive commission and we have no commercial relationships with any providers. This leaves us free to recommend only what we ourselves would use .

Let’s get started:

New Mexico History Museum Guided Tours

NM History museum tour

Ever noticed the recycled rifle barrels in a certain window of the Palace of the Governors? Wondered where the Manhattan Project scientists learned of their new posting? Picked out the Victorian architecture among the Pueblo Revival on the Santa Fe Plaza? Learn those facts and more on a downtown guided tour led by the New Mexico History Museum /Palace of the Governors guides.

The tours typically operate from mid-April through mid-October, Monday-Saturday, beginning at approximately 10 am. It’s important to check ahead because dates and times are subject to change.

Gather at the Palace Courtyard’s Blue Gate just south of the History Museum entrance at 113 Lincoln Ave. The cost is $15. Children 16 and under are free when accompanied by an adult. Museum guides do not accept tips. (No tours are offered on Saturdays when large events are held on the Plaza, such as Spanish Market and Santa Fe Fiesta.)

Each tour lasts about 2 hours and features a leisurely pace with plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Enjoy stories of the people and events that have made Santa Fe a world-class tourist destination.

Los Compadres del Palacio, a support group of the New Mexico History Museum, operates the program with guides who are trained in Santa Fe history. Many are also guides at the History Museum and Palace of the Governors. Proceeds from the tours benefit the museum’s programs and events.

Special group tours can be arranged by calling (505) 476-5200.

The History Museum’s blog takes you on a virtual version of a tour. Check it out by clicking here .

The New Mexico History Museum is the newest addition to a campus that includes the Palace of the Governors , the oldest continuously occupied public building in the United States; Fray Angélico Chávez History Library; Palace of the Governors Photo Archives; the Press at the Palace of the Governors; and the Native American Artisans Program. Located at 113 Lincoln Ave., in Santa Fe, NM, it is a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs.

Santa Fe Discovery Walking Tours

What sets this operator apart is the extensive depth of experience of its guides. The tour is excellent for visitors seeking insight into Santa Fe’s key historic landmarks and culture.

Tours last approximately two hours (comfortable footwear is recommended!) and take in Loretto Chapel , Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi , the Plaza , and more.

The experience begins from the concierge desk of La Fonda Plaza hotel. Adults pay $16 and supervised children under the age of 12 go free. Both walk-ins and reservations are accepted. Phone no.: (505) 577-7645.

Historic Walks of Santa Fe

Historic Walks of Santa Fe (HWSF) have stood the test of time and continue to operate excellent and insightful tours today. Their longevity is a testament to the quality and standards upheld by experienced guides.

Downtown tours can be reserved in advance at (505) 660-8199 and walk-ins are also accepted. The starting point is the Plaza Galeria (next to the Santa Fe Visitor Center). Groups of three adults pay $18 pp and groups of two pay $25 pp. Children under 16 go free. Prices include the cost of entrance to the Loretto Chapel.

Tours last around 1 hr 45 min and are available March through December. HWSF also provides tours that start off from popular hotels (Hilton Santa Fe, Eldorado, Hotel St. Francis).

For The Foodie (Wander New Mexico)

Wander New Mexico’s tours offer a fantastic blend of culinary immersion and historical insight. A relative newcomer, this operator is no slouch and the experiences they offer are already acclaimed by customers.

Prices range from $69 pp to $119 pp. However, it’s worth noting that tours include several stops for food and wine tastings, the cost and gratuity of which is covered in the price.

WNM guides are adept at weaving cultural and historical context into their food tours and guests generally get a chance to take in sites including the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi , the Plaza , Palace of the Governors, and more.

Phone no.: 505-395-0552

Enjoy your visit!

New Mexico's charm captured his imagination on his first visit. Inscrutable and unforgiving at times but doubtlessly gorgeous. Exploring and documenting all corners of our state is an aspiration that comes naturally to him. For Thomas, DiscoverNewMexico.com is a passion of the heart rather than a profession.

About Us

The Original Santa Fe and Canyon Road Walking Map was created in 1975 by Jesse Taylor.  His hand drawn buildings and images became a delight for visitors, who would discover new buildings and businesses with every return visit to Santa Fe. Over time, the map became a staple of the concierge and tourism industry in Santa Fe.

Today, the Santa Fe Walking Map is used by over 300 hotels and businesses, and continues to be visitors’ first choice as a map and guide for the city. Please feel free to contact us if you need a map, or if you have any questions. We look forward to helping you Discover Santa Fe!

A Thought About Physical Maps and Cell Phones

Even though maps have become a cell-phone standard, the Santa Fe Walking Map still remains relevant and sought after. The map draws attention to businesses that may not show up on google maps, and allows visitors to find businesses they haven’t thought to search for online. It also works just fine in the sun or rain, doesn’t have to contend with screen glare, and won’t run out of batteries!

A good travel guide or map does three things: It shows you where you want to go, lets you know how to get there, and introduces you to potential locations and attractions that you aren’t aware of yet. Our map has done this for over 40 years. Let us help you find your new favorite Santa Fe spot; and you can save the cell phone battery for when you get there.

Our Clients Say

I am I glad brought several walking maps home after my last trip.  The maps have all be given away and I am in need of more.  I have recently started working in Wichita, KS which is just a day’s drive away and I’m enjoying getting there more often.  I have run into a lot of people that have heard that Santa Fe is a great place to visit but just haven’t made it there yet.   One of the things I really like about Santa Fe is it can be a place where you drive in,  park your car and not get in it till you leave.  I have used the map to mark suggested places to stay, eat and explore within walking distance of the Plaza.  Several of my Wichita friends have come back saying how helpful the walking map was to there visit.  I can remember these maps from my first trips to Santa Fe in the 70’s and always look forward to checking out the latest revision.

John Lawton

“I couldn’t wait to look them over, and have already spotted some of the restaurants we want to try, and also located the parking lots. Now to start perusing for shops and sights. These are the BEST maps.” Carolyn and Jack Wells
“We really enjoy sharing the Santa Fe Walking maps with all our out-of-state cliental. All of our people come from out of state and it’s really one of the best maps. They are so easy to read and use. The user-friendly layout makes it easy to locate restaurants, attractions and galleries.” Lydia Griego-Hansen, Owner; Destination Southwest.
“The Santa Fe Walking Map was just the ticket for our convention attendees — all women motorcyclists from all over the United States and Canada.  Was a wonderful tool to find our way to Santa Fe’s fabulous restaurants, museums and shopping.  The map was the most commented item in the convention goodie bag — thank you!!” Leanne B., Colorado
We included a copy of the Santa Fe Walking Map in guests’ gift bags at our son’s wedding, and they were a big hit – so helpful to all our out-of-town guests! We had friends and family coming to town from all over the country, many of whom had never visited Santa Fe, so your map really helped them while exploring and shopping while they were here.  Many thanks for your excellent maps!
