Make your home safe

Fire safety, smoke alarms and safety tips.

A working smoke alarm is the best way to protect your family and home. Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service offer more safety tips for your home, and provide a free Safe and Well home visit .

If you have hearing loss

  • you can get a smoke alarm which uses a strobe light and vibrating pads
  • in the event of a fire, if it is difficult for you to call 999 yourself, ask a neighbour to do it for you
  • if you have specialist equipment, such as a text phone or minicom, you can contact the emergency services on 18000

If you have sight problems

  • put a coloured sticker on your smoke alarm if you have trouble seeing to test it, or ask your local fire and rescue service if they can provide a coloured cover
  • consider fitting bump-ons (also known as plastic blisters) to appliances as a way of making sure they are switched off properly
  • unplug and then check electrical leads regularly by touch - if they are frayed or faulty don't use the appliance
  • you may also want to consider placing a tactile indicator along your escape route to make it easier to find the exit

If you have mobility problems

  • if it is difficult to test your alarms ask someone to do it for you
  • remote controlled or easy access alarms are available from electrical retailers
  • Lifeline telecare equipment will allow you to alert someone in the event of an emergency
  • make sure you have easy access to any mobility aids you may need, such as a walking stick

Visit the Hazard House online to learn about fire safety

  • Visit the Hazard House online…

Dorset | Posted on February 4th, 2021 | return to news

An updated version of Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service Hazard House, a 360° virtual tour that highlights fire safety, has been launched.

Hazard-House

The educational tool is designed to help both children and adults really think about their safety in their own homes.

Education coordinator, Yasmine Ellis, said, “Within the Hazard House, a number of fire risks and other dangers have been placed in strategic locations in each room, and the challenge is to locate them. Each hazard has a tag, providing either audio or a text pop-up box to explain what the risk is and how to make it safe. There’s a useful countdown for each room, so you know how many hazards you still have to find, and a hint tool if you get stuck!”

Hazard House is intended to bring an awareness of fire safety in a fun and interactive way. Many risks – such as overloaded sockets – are often not understood, while other dangers may be clear to adults but not children.

Yasmine added, “This is a resource that our education team will use, but we want anyone who wants to know more about fire safety to take a look at Hazard House on our website, and maybe think about other things they can do in their home to be safe – for example, is there an escape plan, does the household follow a bedtime routine, and are there working smoke alarms which are tested regularly? Taking a little time to identify risk and put in place safeguards could save lives.”

You can visit Hazard House at www.dwfire.org.uk/visit-our-hazard-house and then follow the page links for more home fire safety advice.

E-bike and e-scooter fire safety in the home

Make sure you charge your e-bike or e-scooter battery safely. Follow these simple steps to reduce the risk of fire.

  • Don’t leave your device charging unattended or when you’re asleep
  • Don’t charge or store your battery in the hallway or where it could block your escape
  • Only use the correct charger for your battery
  • Only buy e-bikes, e-scooters and batteries from trusted retailers and manufacturers
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Don’t attempt to modify or tamper with the battery
  • Check for the CE or UKCA safety marking to make sure your battery and charger meet safety standards
  • It is recommended that a professional carries out an e-bike conversion
  • Don't overcharge the battery, this can cause fire and the batteries to fail. When the battery is fully charged and the green light shows, you should unplug the charger.

Visit the Hazard House online to learn about fire safety

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has launched an updated version of its online Hazard House, a 360° virtual tour that highlights the importance of fire safety.

This bespoke educational tool is designed so that both children and adults can really think about their safety in their own homes.

Yasmine Ellis, Education Coordinator, told KeeP 106: “Within the Hazard House, a number of fire risks and other dangers have been placed in strategic locations in each room, and the challenge is to locate them. Each hazard has a tag, providing either audio or a text pop-up box to explain what the risk is and how to make it safe. There’s a useful countdown for each room, so you know how many hazards you still have to find, and a hint tool if you get stuck!”

The aim of Hazard House is to embed an awareness of fire safety in a fun and interactive way. Many risks – such as overloaded sockets – are often not understood, while other dangers may be clear to adults but not children.

Yasmine said: “This is a resource that our Education team will use, but we want anyone who wants to know more about fire safety to take a look at Hazard House on our website, and maybe think about other things they can do in their home to be safe – for example, is there an escape plan, does the household follow a bedtime routine, and are there working smoke alarms which are tested regularly? Taking a little time to identify risk and put in place safeguards could save lives.”
