Live reviews

Overall, it was pretty great! I loved KB and Trip Lee. Joesph Solomon was great as well, although he did none of his rap, which he normally does. Ty was okay, but his stage presence was lacking. Over all, I would give this show a four out of five. The reason is because KB, Trip Lee, Joesph Solomon, and Ty did not come out for photos and autographs after the show. That was super disappointing, especially since it was a super small venue. AGhhh. Yeah that's probably what ruined it for me. Otherwise, it was a ton of fun. PAY $16 dollars though. Don't go hardcore and pay the $45. That's too much for this show.

I loved being at the tour because i was alone and i didnt have to worry about being in a group. I felt so happy and grateful that you all came out and shared your word of god in song form. It means a lot to me when someone works so hard for a living and still can make room for god and helping people through life. 1-1-6 is a big inspiration to me and i would love to meet all of you in person.

The Black Keys post updates on social media after appearing to cancel US tour dates

Dan Auerbach, left, and Patrick Carney of The Black Keys. The Akron natives have a new album releasing April 5 and documentary film about their careers coming out.

The Black Keys has provided an update on the state of its upcoming U.S. tour after appearing to cancel it with no explanation, leaving fans wondering why.

The Akron natives removed all but one tour date from their website on Friday , and TicketMaster lists their shows as canceled.

The lone remaining date on their schedule, per the band's website , is on July 6 as part of a NASCAR event.

The band was  scheduled to play at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on Oct. 12  in support of their new album, "Ohio Players."

On social media, the canceled dates left fans wondering what is going on and why the dates were canceled. Some expressed concern about the health of members Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

But in an Instagram post posted Sunday, the band updated fans on the status of the band's members and the U.S. piece of their tour.

The post begins by clarifying for fans that members Auerbach and Carney are "alive and well," hinting that the cancellations are not health related.

"Following the recent run of shows in the UK & Europe, including stops at iconic venues like Brixton Academy and the Zenith in Paris, we have decided to make some changes to the North American leg of the International Players Tour that will enable us to offer a similarly exciting, intimate experience for both fans and the band, and will be announcing a revised set of dates shortly," the post reads

The Instagram post also clarifies that everyone who purchased tickets to an upcoming tour date that has since been canceled “will be fully refunded” and that those who bought tickets will be the first to be able to buy tickets once new dates are finalized.

The X account (previously Twitter) associated with the band posted a thread with similar messaging with the update about why the U.S. tour dates were removed.

Check back for updates for when The Black Keys announce new tour dates and when tickets will become available again.

Queen and Adam Lambert kick off tour with pomp, vigor and the spirit of Freddie Mercury

kb music tour

BALTIMORE – Who knew we needed the dazzling showmanship, the unmatched catalog of layered pop rock and the undiminished musicianship of Queen + Adam Lambert this much?

The band rooted by original guitarist (and noted astrophysicist) Sir Brian May and suave drummer Roger Taylor hasn’t played stateside in four years, when its Rhapsody tour first launched.

On Wednesday, at the first of two shows at Baltimore’s CFG Bank Arena, the Queen + Lambert extravaganza reignited for a 23-date tour that will run through November in all of its garish glory.

Here are some highlights from the tour kickoff, a 27-song master class in potent songs and delicate homage with the magnetic Lambert its humble ringleader.

More: U2 brings swagger, iconic songs to Sphere Las Vegas in jaw-dropping opening night concert

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

What songs do Queen + Adam Lambert play on the 2023 Rhapsody tour?

Playing off the futuristic feel of the staging – lots of chrome and robots on video screens – the band kicked off the two-hour-plus show with “Radio Ga Ga,” the hand-clapping 1984 hit that found the platinum-haired Lambert strutting the stage in a silver breastplate and cape .

Though the band brought the Rhapsody production to Europe last summer, the set list has been jiggled and peppered with some different songs, including the rough-riffing “Stone Cold Crazy” – played for the first time since 2018 – and the magnificently theatrical “The Show Must Go On.”

Queen also unveiled “Is This the World We Created…?” from 1984’s “The Works” album, which has never been played in the decade that Lambert has fronted the band. Sitting at the end of a catwalk with only May, 76, on acoustic guitar, Lambert showcased the purity of his versatile voice on the ballad.

The multigenerational crowd also lapped up plenty of well-worn classic rock radio staples. “Another One Bites the Dust” needed only its opening bass notes from Neil Fairclough for recognition; “Somebody to Love” spotlighted a soulful Lambert spreading his multi-octave voice across the song; and “Bohemian Rhapsody” wrapped the pre-encore set instilled with Lambert’s dramatic entrance from beneath the stage, May sporting a mirrored jumpsuit amid a blizzard of lights and the original Queen video for the song employed to handle the tricky operatic passage in the song.

How does Freddie Mercury factor into the Queen + Adam Lambert tour?

The naysayers who contend that Queen has been nothing but a cover band with Lambert at the helm need to take a seat. Lambert’s respect for Mercury has always been palpable, and at Wednesday’s show, you could see his subtle nods to the original Queen frontman, who died in 1991.

Mercury surely would have swooned at the ornately decorated rotating motorcycle that Lambert sat atop – complete with a crotch cam – for the pairing of “Bicycle Race” and “Fat Bottomed Girls” and grinned at Lambert’s shoulder shimmies worthy of Liza Minnelli in her prime during an adrenalized “Don’t Stop Me Now.”

But Mercury was remembered in a more direct way when Lambert, 41, praised the “two rock ‘n’ roll legends” sharing the stage with him and continued with, “We do this with Freddie in our hearts, and I know he’s in your heart.”

A couple of songs later, May, as he has done on past tours, took a solo turn at the edge of the catwalk to sing “Love of My Life” in a tender voice. It was a chill-inducing moment when he asked the crowd to hold up their lighted phones (“In the old days it used to be candles,” he joked) while footage of Mercury crooning the ballad appeared in split screen with May on the overhead curved video screen.

Who else is playing with Queen + Adam Lambert?

While the sweetly grinning May mesmerized with his distinctive guitar lines throughout the show and Taylor, dapper in a black tie and vest, steamrolled through demanding songs at age 74, the multilayered construction of the band’s songs require a bit more of a lift.

Joining May, Taylor, Lambert and Fairclough were longtime keyboardist and musical director Spike Edney and percussionist Tyler Warren, who frequently jammed alongside Taylor on these musically precise classics.

With a combination of exceptional lighting and voluminous slices of lasers, the scorched-earth singing of Lambert and the continued expert presentation from May and Taylor, this Rhapsody tour doesn’t feel like a victory lap, but, rather, a deeper solidifying of Queen’s legacy.

Eminem-produced Michigan Central concert in Detroit to star Diana Ross, Jack White, more

kb music tour

It could be one for the ages: A blockbuster, all-star celebration of Detroit music will bring Diana Ross, Jack White, Big Sean and a host of other top names to the restored Michigan Central train station as the historic site launches its grand reopening for a global audience.

Eminem and his manager, Paul Rosenberg, are billed as executive producers of the Thursday night show. The concert is spearheaded by Ford Motor Co., which spent nearly $1 billion to renovate the site and unveiled the artist roster Monday morning after weeks of buildup.

Branded as “Live From Detroit: The Concert at Michigan Central,” the event will stream live on Peacock, then air Sunday on NBC as a prime-time special.

The 90-minute, genre-spanning concert — whose lineup includes hip-hop duo Slum Village, gospel stars Kierra Sheard and the Clark Sisters, techno-house DJ Theo Parrish and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra — will mark the biggest convergence of hometown star power on one Detroit stage in decades.

The show will also feature visiting artists such as Jelly Roll, Fantasia, Common and Melissa Etheridge performing tributes to the city’s rich music heritage.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Additional acts are being booked for the event, sources have told the Detroit Free Press. Monday’s official announcement says the concert will include “surprise special guests.”

Michigan Central Station reopening: Everything you need to know

Presenters will include Detroit Lions stars and veterans such as Barry Sanders, Jared Goff and Amon-Ra St. Brown, along with comedian Mike Epps and actress Sophia Bush.

The concert can be watched live at 8:30 p.m. Thursday on WDIV-TV Channel 4 and Peacock, the streaming service operated by NBC Universal, and will be repurposed for a one-hour NBC special airing nationally at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Six weeks after the NFL draft downtown, the Michigan Central concert is poised to give Detroit another high-profile starring role amid the city’s ongoing renewal.

More: Michigan Central Station renovation is ‘a little bit of revenge’ for Ford CEO Jim Farley

Details were revealed Monday by Ford and Michigan Central after weeks of growing buzz and intrigue about the free event, which will accommodate 15,000 people at Corktown’s Roosevelt Park in front of the restored train station. Tickets have already been distributed.

The concert is a marquee moment for Ford as it unveils the resurrected Michigan Central following a six-year, $950 million rehabilitation of the 13-story depot and its surrounding 30-acre campus just west of downtown Detroit.

“We wanted to celebrate the reopening of Michigan Central Station in style and make it a night to remember for Detroiters and people watching around the world,” Bill Ford, executive chair of Ford, said in a statement Monday.

“I am honored and grateful that so many of Detroit’s musical legends, sports heroes, artists and innovators are joining us to celebrate the city we all love and the bright future we are creating together.”

The streaming and TV production is being led by Jesse Collins Entertainment, a Los Angeles company that has overseen Super Bowl halftime shows, Emmy Awards, BET Honors and other events.

For Ross, the glittery Motown star who grew up in the bygone Brewster housing project 2 miles northeast of the train station, the Michigan Central show will be the first homecoming performance since 2016 .

White, who led the White Stripes to rock glory before success with the Raconteurs and as a solo artist, grew up in southwest Detroit not far from Michigan Central. He last played here in April 2022 — a Masonic Temple two-nighter that included an onstage marriage proposal and wedding with his now-wife, Olivia Jean.

Homegrown hit rapper Big Sean, who kicked off April’s NFL draft with a live set, figured prominently in Ford’s 2018 public festivities when the automaker bought the train station property.

Those artists and the others announced Monday make up the most notable concentration of name-brand Detroit talent to share a bill in many years — likely going back to the 1960s and the Motortown Revues that assembled chart-topping Motown acts at venues such as the Fox Theatre.

If Eminem were to perform, it would be the rapper’s first hometown show in nearly a decade, not counting his onstage cameos with touring acts such as Ed Sheeran and 50 Cent. His last headlining stand in Detroit was an August 2014 Comerica Park doubleheader with Rihanna.

Some of the out-of-town acts are arriving with obvious Detroit connections: R&B star Fantasia, for instance, has been part of Aretha Franklin tributes through the years, including a 2019 Grammy special . And she duetted with the Queen of Soul on the 2007 single “Put You Up on Game.”

Jelly Roll, the Tennessee-bred country-rock-rap phenomenon, has often gushed about his love of Bob Seger and Eminem . (And he’ll presumably be doing some multitasking via private jet the night of the Detroit show, when he's also scheduled to headline an Iowa music festival .)

Monday’s Ford announcement bills the train station event as a showcase of “the spirit and soul of Detroit through an incredible lineup of musical performances, short films, appearances by local leaders, and creators telling stories of innovation and culture from around the city and the region.”

Michigan Central Station was the tallest train depot in the world when it opened in 1913 and ultimately served 4,000-plus rail passengers daily. It was abandoned in the 1980s and became a global symbol of Detroit decay before its $90 million purchase in 2018 by Ford, which plans to base 2,500 employees on the campus by 2028.

Michigan Central Station: How secret basement, flooding nightmare led to renovation delays

Other occupants include startup firms and other ventures, with restaurants and retail space scheduled to roll out in coming months.

Following Thursday’s concert, Michigan Central will host daily public tours of the restored train station through June 17. Tours will then be available on Fridays and Saturdays through August.

Fans can also expect the Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award-winning singer to delve into parts of her life they may not be familiar with, such as her time fronting the band Blue Angel in the early 1980s.

The film will feature interviews with Patti LaBelle, Boy George, Billy Porter, Lauper's former manager David Wolff, and Lauper herself.

In an interview with CBS News's Anthony Mason, Lauper gave a preview of the documentary, discussing her home life, the decisions behind "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," and how she was hailed a "troublemaker" during the recording of "We Are The World."

"Cyndi Lauper: Let the Canary Sing" premieres June 4 on Paramount+.

Vince Staples Plans ‘Black in America’ Tour

By Kory Grow

Now that his new album, Dark Times , is out and Netflix has renewed his TV series , Vince Staples can finally relax in the way Vince Staples relaxes best: by constantly working. This fall, after a European run, the rapper will tour North America, hitting festivals and mid-sized venues on a trek he’s dubbed the “Black in America Tour.”

The dates, which feature Baby Rose on some shows, kick off with a set at Austin City Limits Music Festival in October and run sporadically for about a month. He’ll close the festivities with a gig at L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium on Nov. 6. Ticketing details are on Staples’ website .

In a recent Rolling Stone interview , Staples said he was happy with the way people have embraced The Vince Staples Show , which puts a comedic spin on the rapper’s life. “I think I have a niche fan base,” he said. “I’ve never had an extreme level of success. So, I’m always open to people not liking something or it not [being digested] right. I was honestly surprised by the way that it was received.”
