Kimberly Crest

Kimberly Crest House and Gardens is an exquisite French château-style Victorian mansion located in Redlands, California ( San Bernardino County in the Inland Empire ). It’s a unique destination and not-so-hidden gem for visitors looking to explore its beautiful gardens, learn about its fascinating history, and capture stunning photos of the estate.

Located at 1325 Prospect Drive, in Redlands CA , you will find the mansion about halfway between Los Angeles and Palm Springs.

This beautiful estate was built in 1897 for Mrs. Cornelia Hill. The property was sold, in 1905, to members of the Kimberly family (John Alfred Kimberly, and his wife, Helen Cheney Kimberly), known for co-founding the Kimberly-Clark paper company.

Mrs. Hill proceeded to build another, less-castle-like house elsewhere in Redlands. Meanwhile, the Kimberly family began installing the fantastic Italian Renaissance gardens that grace the property of Kimberly Crest.

Mary Kimberly Shirk, John Alfred Kimberly’s daughter who had been widowed, was the last Kimberly to live in the home. Upon her death in 1979, by her wishes, Mary Kimberly Shirk donated the home to “the people of Redlands” and established the Kimberly-Shirk Association to run the home and gardens to this day.

Kimberly Crest is part of the greater area surrounding it, called Prospect Park , full of greenery and trails in lovely south Redlands.

Firmly stamped into the history of Redlands, Kimberly Crest is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as being a registered California Historical Landmark, and of course, a City of Redlands Historic Landmark.

Architecture

The architecture of the mansion has been described in different ways. It is at once a French château-style 3-story home with tall towers and turrets, and also a Victorian mansion as is common to Redlands, California.

The overall property consists of the main residence (a large 7,000 square foot dwelling), a carriage house, the formal Italian gardens, and several acres of orange groves.

The grounds of Kimberly Crest span several acres, including Italian gardens, terraces, walkways, fountains, statuary, lily ponds, koi ponds, and more. Visitors can wander through the gardens, exploring everything Kimberly Crest has to offer.

Redlands’ Kimberly Crest House and Gardens is the perfect place for families who want to explore California history and nature.

Visitors can take part in guided tours (the only way to see inside) or explore outdoors on their own while visiting this remarkable place steeped in history!

You can wander through the gardens, visit the historic home, or take a walk on the nearby nature trails.

Tours are available on the following days & times:

  • Thursdays: 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Fridays: 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Sundays: 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

The current price (at the time of writing) is $15.00 for adults, $12.00 for seniors/active military/veteran/student, and $5.00 for children ages 6-12. These prices do not include a small booking fee.

Each 45-minute tour will be hosted by a docent. Learn the home’s history, see the museum-like Victorian interior (1st and 2nd floors) full of historical artifacts, and hear stories about goings on throughout the decades. If you want to see Kimberly Crest decked out in its Christmas finest, make your visit reservations for December!

The Kimberly Crest House and Gardens

kimberly crest tours

This French château-style Victorian mansion is a registered California Historical Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The house’s namesake comes from philanthropists and prominent public figures, Helen Cheney Kimberly, her daughter Mary Kimberly Shirk and Mrs. Kimberly’s husband, J. Alfred Kimberly, who is also a legacy to 19th-century industrialism and entrepreneurship in the form of the Kimberly-Clark Corporation.

In 1963 there was a community effort to raise money to match a Federal grant to purchase Prospect Park (a 39-acre botanical park east of and adjacent to Kimberly Crest) for the City of Redlands.  To motivate support for this worthwhile project, Mrs. Shirk promised to give her home to the “people of Redlands” if the needed money was raised – and the incentive worked, with the park being acquired in 1968.

The following year the Kimberly-Shirk Association was formed, which to this day still maintains responsibilities overseeing the upkeep, maintenance and care of Kimberly Crest House & Gardens property. When Mary Shirk passed away in 1981, the Association acquired the home and opened it to the public.

Today, the organization stands to share the beauty of the estate with visitors, educate visitors about the history and significance of the events, people, objects and culture of Kimberly Crest, and to inspire others through the vision Mary Kimberly Shirk had in leadership in education, philanthropy, community and human values.

“Italian Renaissance styled gardens”

Kimberly Crest, a picturesque French chateau style home built in 1897, is a well preserved example of the Victorian Era in California. The 7,000 square foot, three-story chateau sits on a six and one quarter acre estate two miles south of downtown Redlands, at 1325 Prospect Drive, and is enjoyed by more than 11,000 visitors annually. Originally built by Mrs. Cornelia A. Hill, a widow from New York State, the home was purchased by J. Alfred Kimberly (a co-founder of the Kimberly-Clark Corporation) and Helen Cheney Kimberly in 1905. Their widowed daughter, Mary Kimberly Shirk, lived in the home from 1920 until her death in 1979. The house’s unique features include a French revival parlor complete with gilt furniture and silk damask wall coverings. Terraced Italian gardens, orange groves and ponds surround this historic landmark home. The lily ponds feature radiant Koi; vivid red, pink and yellow lilies against deep green majestic lotus blossoms; and papyrus. In 1998, KSA was made an honorary member of the Inland Koi Society who maintains the lily ponds at Kimberly Crest. The Italian terraced gardens were designed by G. Edwin Bergstrom, a prominent Los Angeles architect and a son-in-law of the Kimberlys. Bergstrom successfully interpreted Mrs. Kimberly's wishes for an Italian garden. Terence Hernstrom, director of gardens and grounds, revives and designs the breath-taking gardens today. The gardens include never ending Mediterranean borders, cascading fountains, lily and koi ponds, multiple terraces, curved stairways and engulfing orange groves - all reminiscent of Renaissance Italy.

LA Explorer

Visiting Kimberly Crest in Redlands

Way back before the age of social media I subscribed to Charles Phoenix’s Slide of the Week. Do you know Charles Phoenix ? The histo-tainer, the Ambassador of Americana, the LA legend? Anyway, each week he would send a different vintage slide with a little tale of classic SoCal and one week he sent an image of Kimberly Crest , the grand estate in Redlands . I had never heard of it but from his description I immediately had to go. Well, immediately turned into several years and finally on a recent weekend I headed inland to tour the estate.

kimberly crest tours

In 1896 Cornelia Hill purchased 3.5 acres outside the town of Redlands and commissioned a European style mansion to be built on the site. Within a year she moved in but stayed only 8 years until she decided to move to a smaller place in town. She sold the home to J.A. Kimberly, one of the founders of Kimberly-Clark, and he soon occupied the home with his wife, Helen. They lived in the home until their deaths in 1928 and 1931, respectively and it was then passed on to their daughter, Mary Kimberly Shirk. Mary, a widow, devoted much of her time to the people of Redlands and supported many philanthropic causes. As the city grew around the mansion and the treat of development reached neighboring Prospect Park Mrs. Shirk struck a deal with the city – if they raised the money to save the park she would donate her home to the city upon her death. The money was raised and in 1981 the home was opened to the public.

kimberly crest tours

To this day public tours are offers on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays for a nominal fee. The home is located on a hill surrounded by lush trees in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

kimberly crest tours

After parking down the hill we made our way through the beautiful tended grounds to the visitors center. Inside we viewed some family artifacts while waiting for our tour. It was a slow day and when our tour time arrived we were the only patrons. I wish there were more people out enjoying the historical landmark but a private tour did allow us a thorough, intimate tour.

kimberly crest tours

As is often the case with historic home tours, photos were not allowed. I wish they were because the inside is beautiful! Because the home was donated by its longtime occupant the interior furnishings are original and it’s decorated much as it had been during her tenure there.

kimberly crest tours

The tour took us all over the first and second floors and our knowledgeable tour guide told us all about the home and the family who lived in it. As Mr. Kimberly was a long time president of Kimberly-Clark there were also vintage Kleenex items that were fun to see.

kimberly crest tours

At the conclusion of our tour my family and I agreed it was one of the most beautiful residences we’d ever been in (and we’ve been in a LOT of historic homes). Kimberly Crest is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and deservedly so. A visit to the home will give a glimpse into life in early California, an insight into one of our country’s largest corporations and an appreciation of fine architecture. It’s well worth visiting.
