Dickie Hammond, guitarist of Leatherface

Melancholia and raw pain: the sad end of Leatherface

The death of guitarist Dickie Hammond this week could result in the demise of the greatest British punk band of the modern era

After a long period of poor health, Richard “Dickie” Hammond died last weekend, aged 50, in Sunderland . The news has been shattering to many – his friends raised thousands to pay for his funeral. Fifty is too young, even for a man who lived a life that was big and fast. But also because it most likely spells the true death for Leatherface, the greatest British punk band of the modern era, for whom Hammond played guitar. To fans of punk rock worldwide, this is heartbreaking.

It’s often the case at times like these, times swathed in emotion and sentimentality, that people make claims suggesting a band deserved more commercial success or mass recognition than they actually achieved. In the case of Leatherface, it doesn’t seem appropriate. Sure, the essence of much that made the band great is the emotional currency of the masses – no punk rock group ever mastered melancholia like they did, a scant few have carried the raw pain their songs did without buckling. But few of their songs are instantly palatable. Few could have blazed from the radio at breakfast time without upsetting the baby. This is music that demanded a degree of effort, or at least investment, on the part of the listener. But then, most of the best things do.

After they formed in Sunderland in 1988, it took a little time for the band to hit their stride. Listen to the thrashy punk of their 1989 debut, Cherry Knowle, named after the infamous local, Victorian-built asylum, and you might struggle to understand why the band meant so much to so many. Yet by album three, 1991’s Mush, the band had not only delivered that rarest of musical gifts, the truly perfect album, but also invented an intricate, yearning, yet still brutal sound, which has influenced every hardcore, post-hardcore, call it what you want, punk group that exists anywhere across the globe. Hot Water Music’s Chuck Regan still covers Leatherface songs on pretty much every solo tour he undertakes, and his band are indebted to them. Avail, Dillinger Four, the Gaslight Anthem – all would say the same.

Leatherface singer and songwriter Frankie Stubbs once said that he knew the band was “doing alright” when the kids with the mohawks would move away from the stage when they played, and those with the backpacks and heavy prescription glasses would move towards it. And while this was undoubtedly music made by tough men, from a tough city – the lyric “the air in here smells of religion and Vaux’s beer” from Mush’s highpoint, Dead Industrial Atmosphere, conjures up the desolation of Sunderland, post-shipyards, perfectly – the sentiments contained within the songs are big-hearted and gooey. The song Frankie Stubbs’ Tears, by Franz Nicolay , is a fitting, damp-eyed tribute to the man who sang them.

Stubbs is central to the band’s brilliance. Born Frankie Norman Warsaw Stubbs in 1962, he became the singer because he was the only member of the then fledgling band to bother to write any lyrics. In those days the band practised in his roofless garage when it wasn’t raining, and toured in Skipper One, their first van, bought from the proceeds of selling magic mushrooms. For a time, you would have to write to Stubbs’s mum’s address in order to buy merchandise, while his production work became the rite of passage for any British punk band who meant anything, from China Drum, to Wat Tyler to Snuff and beyond. Yet it’s those words, and that voice, a bit like Lemmy singing the blues or Elvis gargling gravel, atop a sound indebted to the muted punk pop of early Police, which has lead to Frankie becoming such a revered figure.

But added to that, unquestionably, is the guitar playing, the sound of Stubbs’s and Hammond’s duelling guitars, entwining the disparate sounds they made. Both men said they could never play what the other man played, so they worked out their own wildly different parts that sounded good together. Both men said the other was the best player they knew. “It’s all about the sound,” said Stubbs. “You know, making the guitar go, AAAAARRRRRAAAARRRRGH!”

British punk rock will be much quieter for Dickie Hammond’s passing, and much more so if this is to be the end of Leatherface.

What was, by far, England’s finest, most exciting punk band of the ’90s began up north in Sunderland as a pretty-good/nothing-special thrash quartet that suddenly caught fire on its third album, the band’s only US release. Those who thought real punk was passé‚ missed out on the overwhelming passion, sincerity and smarts of singer/guitarist/lyricist Frankie Stubbs. With a Lemmy-like Frankenstein monster growl, Stubbs’ intellect and desire burn all over Mush , Minx and The Last ; the band is equally red-hot, a finely tuned, post-Ruts pummeling unit.

Cherry Knowle and Fill Your Boots are dispensable; both are fine hardcore records but add nothing especially exciting to the genre. Nevertheless, the seeds of Leatherface’s later work are there in the debut’s “Colorado Joe/Leningrad Vlad,” “Discipline” and “Cabbage Case,” and the second album’s “Razor Blades and Aspirin” and “New York State.”

Mush , however, is a knockout. Led by a ferocious guitar attack (Stubbs and co-writer Dickie Hammond) at more manageable fast tempos — the rhythm section’s work is much improved — the fifteen-song fireball has awesome throat-grabbing drive and thoughtful lyrics. Following such great tracks as “Dead Industrial Atmosphere” and the anthemic “I Want the Moon,” the album ends with an eye-opening detonation of “Message in a Bottle” as if it were written by the Give ‘Em Enough Rope Clash instead of the Police. Mush is a shake-you-up, make-you-angry, get-your-ya-ya’s-out experience.

Minx was bound to be in Mush ‘s shadow, and it is. Stubbs’ grotesquely rough voice still pours out the fury and Leatherface remains an unreservedly mighty force, but there are fewer places where the tuneful roar goes over the deep edge. The album starts off cracklin’ (especially the low, fast and thoughtfully violent “Fat, Earthy, Flirt” and an old-time smasher, “Books”), but fails to sustain the pace, as the songwriting lacks dramatic edge. The closing “Pale Moonlight,” however, blows away the acoustic version found on an earlier EP.

If Mush is the punishing punk classic, The Last is the mature masterpiece. Recorded but a few weeks before the group split up onstage, the LP finds Leatherface broadening into more varied styles and making use of outstanding production — without sacrificing the massive muscle and precision. “Little White God” is the song of the band’s career (and recalls the final days of the Ruts before heroin finished off singer Malcolm Owen). Utilizing a huge-sounding punk/reggae beat for the verses, with Stubbs’ gruff, tormented voice bellowing about the consequences of cocaine addiction (“He’s in love with the little white god/He’s so in love, he’s forgotten about being a mod”), this dramatic single was an incredible send-off for an inspired group. Elsewhere, “In My Life” sways back and forth like a drunken rummy, and a few tracks hearken back to older days, but “Shipyards” is a curveball (a boozy, bluesy Stubbs backed mainly by piano and drums) and the closing “Ba Ba Ba Ba Boo” is an obvious tribute to Louis Armstrong.

In the wake of Leatherface’s dissolution, Hammond formed Doctor Bison and Stubs unveiled Pope, whose album, Pope John Paul George Ringo , was shelved when the band split up. Meanwhile, the posthumous Live in Oslo appeared, to prove that Leatherface was even more bloodthirsty in concert than on record. Discography – Part One is also live, from a pair of concerts, but the strongest live Leatherface is on the Your Choice disc split with Jawbox. Discography – Part Two combines singles, two acoustic tracks and half of Live in Oslo .

Leatherface returned in 1998 (with Leighton Evans replacing Dickie Hammond on guitar). The first new material from this lineup is on the album shared with New York acolytes Hot Water Music. Opener “Andy” (a memorial to Andy Crighton, whose bass duties were taken on by David Lee) is a blistering return. Lyrically more cryptic than ever (“Eat her face and then it pours again”), this picks up where The Last left off, obliterating the five-year gap between studio recordings.

Horsebox brings a little production clarity and a few throat lozenges, neither of which is a bad idea. Neither is the occasional hook. Kicking in on the third track, “Soundbites” is quintessential Leatherface (“Avoiding the sunspots / Soundbites like snowstorms”). “Lorrydriver’s Son” once again makes connections to the DC punk sound and, somehow, covering a Cyndi Lauper hit (“True Colours”) works out alright. “Eddy Bumble” is Cal-thrash, but the art-punk chiming in “Kill DJs” makes it the standout here. If Horsebox brings Leatherface closer to traditional punk rock, it also allows emotional room for Stubbs’ vocals. If not as stylized as The Last or Mush , it’s also less of an acquired taste.

Recorded without Evans, Dog Disco has less-inspired playing and cover art, though the lyrics are as ever. Still sounding like a mad dash between Motörhead and a hardcore Johnny Cash, it fills all punk requirements. Though fewer tracks stand out, the album is more refined. Fatherhood adds a new dimension to “Diddly Squat” (“In one child’s eyes / I see everything I’ve ever seen”). Elsewhere, age itself causes reflection (“Am I anything at all? / I’m just an ugly old fart” in “Heed the Ball”). “Small Yellow Chair” is quite melodic for this band, and, while “Hoodlum” has the best hook, other tunes fall back on repeated metal-reggae-chunk figures. “Plastic Surgery” is (gasp) a ballad, and “You” demonstrates what Tom Waits might sound like if he accidentally stepped on a distortion pedal.

The BYO reissue of The Last adds all but one track from Pope’s LP. Similar sounding, maybe, but with musical components set a notch back (recorded without Dickie Hammond) and less diversity. The Frankie Stubbs 10-inch is a solo acoustic performance. Jesse is another Stubbs project, sounding similar to Pope.

leatherface band tour

Sunderland, UK‚ Leatherface formed in August 1988, and their live shows have become the stuff of legend, if you’ve ever been lucky enough to catch them live you’ll have witnessed the pre-gig excitement, the trepidation of the emotional possibilities, the rollercoaster ride of each song and the overall full on powerhouse brutality of melodic punk rock which is down to Dickie Hammonds unique guitar playing, the bombast of the rhythm section that includes Graeme Philliskirk on bass. On top of this mighty backdrop is Frankie Stubbs lyrics, with his incredibly raspy voice and passionate delivery, exudes an aura that demands and gets respect. He wins admiration, in part, for his distinct lack of trying to be something he’s not. He is utterly devoid of pretence and flash. Leatherface have obtained a massive cult following outside their native country over the years. The band have been cited as an influence by higher-profile acts in the USA such as Hot Water Music, Dillinger Four, Tiltwheel and many other bands around the globe. Jack Rabid, music critic and publisher of the music magazine Big Takeover, rates Leatherface’s The Stormy Petrel on par with their 1991 release Mush which he described as one of the fifty greatest punk albums of all time.

Leatherface

Leatherface minx lp reissue.

Someone once said that LEATHERFACE was the best British punk band from the ’90s—I think that is an understatement. There’s no other group that sounds like them. Their style is unique and unrepeatable, a race between two ambitious guitarists that wanted to find the definite riff, the weirdest, sharpest, most outstanding guitar lick. Mush is by far their best work, but Minx is probably their second-best, a perfect example of their style: that strange and warm fog of derailed guitars, complex and perfectly executed arrangements, topped with a rugged and deep voice which feels straight out of a sailor’s tavern down on the misty docks of Sunderland. The reissue by Call of the Void is a good chance for the collectors, since it’s not easy to find original LEATHERFACE albums just lying around. A trip across one of the most nostalgic, intelligent, and passionate punk bands that probably ever was.

Leatherface Cherry Knowle LP reissue

Full disclosure here, I love this band. Now, that said, I do not particularly love this album. It was, in fact, the first LEATHERFACE album I heard, and as such it will always have a certain place in my heart, but for me it’s probably somewhere in the middle as far as my personal rankings of their albums go. That’s not to say that it’s not a strong album. In fact, as my gateway to the band, it was strong enough to make me go see them several times, which then led to my eventual love of the band. Song-wise, there are some great ones here. I think it was initially the production of the album that didn’t win me over immediately, but now it’s endearing. I’m glad that it’s finally been reissued, as it is a great record, and the only one I actually no longer have a copy of. Pretty sure it sold out fairly quickly though, so it’s off to the internet I go to find a copy for a ridiculous price!!!!!

Leatherface Mush LP reissue

Without LEATHERFACE, there wouldn’t be a Gainesville scene. On this reissue of the British band’s third seminal LP, all the hallmarks are in place: hoarse but melodic, gruff but tuneful, blunt but wistful. Remastered, with a few old singles tracks thrown in, to boot. Crucial stuff.

The Who isn’t currently scheduled to perform live anywhere. But its co-founder and lead guitarist Pete Townshend thinks it’s just a matter of time before they hit the road again.

During an interview on the Jim Kerr Rock and Roll Morning Show for Q104.3 FM in New York City, Townshend said that while there’s still a lot of planning to do, he and lead singer Roger Daltrey hope to work out the details of a tour sometime later this year.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Will Chronicle Tour Prep in ‘Road Diary' Documentary

Bruce Springsteen's behind-the-scenes tour preparation process will serve as the center of the forthcoming documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band . Premiering on Hulu and Disney+ this October, the feature will follow the musician and his band as they get ready to embark on their first tour in six years, a run that started in February 2023 and will extend through November 2024.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's tour was marred by illness and complications from its start. Within two weeks of kicking off, guitarist Steven Van Zandt and violinist/singer Soozie Tyrell tested positive for Covid , causing them to miss a number of shows and raising concerns about the size of their touring party. Their saxophonist Jake Clemons and half of the E Street's backup singers missed subsequent dates, too.

In March 2023, once everyone seemed to be in the clear, a number of dates were suddenly postponed due to " illness ." A few months later, in September, the band's remaining scheduled tour dates for the year were postponed as Springsteen underwent and recovered from treatment for peptic ulcer disease . The tour resumed in March 2024. It has been a bumpy ride.

Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will zero in on the highlights of the tour. According to a release, the film will offer insight into Springsteen's creative process through commentary from the musician and "fly-on-the-wall footage of band rehearsals and special moments backstage."

"These conversations follow Springsteen closely as he develops the story he wants to tell with this tour's set list - interspersed with rare archival clips of The E Street Band, underscoring themes of life, loss, mortality, and community," the release reads. "In this way, it serves as an essential and never-before-seen chapter in an autobiographical series spanning Springsteen's memoir Born to Run , Springsteen on Broadway , and the films Western Stars and Letter to You ."

The documentary was directed by Thom Zimny with Zimny, Jon Landau, Bruce Springsteen, Adrienne Gerard, and Sean Stuart serving as producers.

  6. Peasants In Paradise: The Indelible Impact of Leatherface

Leatherface have always loved the one-note joke of running a well-known song through the loud/fast machine, but in this case picking a weirder and less obvious one really pays off. Finally, for a band that was known for baffling and sometimes half-baked record art, this 12" actually looks pretty damn good.
