ADVANCE WEATHER WARNING The Met Office has issued yellow severe weather warnings this weekend for Northern Ireland, south Scotland and west England & Wales, named Storm Kathleen.

STORM KATHLEEN Storm Kathleen may bring difficult driving conditions, with gusts of up to 80km/h expected, affecting motorists travelling during the Easter school holidays.

OPERATION BROCK The M20 will close overnight from 8pm Sun to 6am Mon for Operation Brock, designed to keep the M20 and other Kent roads moving when travel to the English Channel is disrupted.

The M6 motorway is one of the most important motorways in the United Kingdom, and is one of the longest in Europe. It links the cities of Carlisle, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool. The motorway first opened in 1958, but the current route has been extended, upgraded and improved numerous times over the years to meet increased demand.

In terms of safety, the M6 motorway has a good safety record. According to the Department for Transport, 28 people were killed and 534 were seriously injured on the M6 in 2017. This compares to an average of 37 killed and 617 seriously injured on all trunk roads in England during the same period. Despite this, Road Safety charity Brake still urge motorists to drive safely and with care when travelling on the M6.

HELP! Please sign our petition to reinstate the live CCTV traffic camera feeds for the M6

As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the M6 (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.

We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.

Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.

The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!

The M6 is a key road for Britain, as the motorway links the Midlands with the Scottish border, sending traffic through Birmingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Liverpool, Manchester, Lancaster and Carlisle. As the M6 consists of the standard three lanes for much of its length, congestion and tailbacks can form quickly, and subsequently incidents can take a long time to clear. The history of the M6 motorway

Among its many claims to fame, the M6 incorporates Britain’s first ever stretch of motorway – formally known as the Preston By-pass, which was opened in 1958. Nowadays that’s just a fraction of the M6 overall, which stretches for 232 miles from Junction 19 of the M1 near Rugby, all the way to Gretna. The final section was finally completed in 2008.

Features of the route include Spaghetti Junction in Birmingham, which is more formally known as Junction 6 of the M6. The M6 also boasts the longest viaduct in Britain, running for 3.5 miles between Castle Bromwich and Gravelly Hill, and the second highest motorway stretch in the country – the Shap Fell section is 320m above sea-level, and beaten only by the M62 motorway at Saddleworth Moor.

Emergency services have been called to the southbound stretch

Motorists are facing long delays on the M6 due to a 'stranded HGV'. The incident has taken place on the southbound carriageway between Junctions 20 and 19.

National Highways has confirmed that two out of three lanes have been shut. That has triggered eight miles of congestion stretching all the way back to Junction 21a.

Meanwhile traffic monitoring system Inrix is claiming the vehicle has overturned. It has also resulted in congestion on the northbound carriageway.

The Inrix alert, generated at 8.15am, states: "Long delays and two lanes closed due to overturned vehicle on M6 Southbound from J20 M56 J9 (Lymm Interchange) to J19 A556 (Knutsford). Congestion to J21A (Croft Interchange). Northbound traffic slows as it passes the scene."

An update from National Highways posted on social media states: "M6 southbound between J20 (M56) and J19 (A556) in Cheshire. Lanes closed - two lanes (of three) closed due to a stranded heavy goods vehicle which requires recovery. Forty-five minute delays and eight miles of congestion (from J21a M62) Allow extra time and consider alternate routes."

M6 LIVE: Huge delays of up to TWO HOURS after lorry overturns

Two lanes are shut for a 'complex recovery'

There were huge delays on a stretch of the M6 this afternoon after a lorry overturned.

The incident happened on the southbound carriageway between junction 20 for the M56 and junction 19 for Knutsford at around 9.45am this morning. National Highways said a lorry 'partially overturned on the merge'.

A 'complex recovery operation' took place. Two lanes were closed off.

There qwew delays of up to two hours between junction 22 and junction 19. In a post on X at around 12.45pm, National Highways North West said: "UPDATE #M6 southbound between J20 (#M56) and J19 (#A556) #Cheshire.

"LANES CLOSED 2 lanes (of 3) remain closed for a complex recovery operation of a lorry which partially overturned on to the verge earlier this morning. 120 min delay to journeys between J22 and J19." The lanes reopened by 2pm.

All three lanes are now open on the southbound carriageway between J20 and J19.

90-minute delays

According to National Highways, traffic is now delayed for around 90 minutes.

The lorry has now been righted and is being secured for removal from the motorway.

One lane now shut

Lane two has been reopened, with lane one still shut.

Traffic slow through Warrington

According to traffic alert service Inrix, traffic is also slow through Warrington as drivers try to avoid the M6.

Congestion on the M6 is back to J21A for the M62 Croft Interchange.

Traffic is queuing up to the closure at junction 20 to 19.

National Highways said there are delays of up to two hours on the southbound side of the motorway this afternoon.

40 minute traffic delays on the M6 due to congestion

THERE is currently a 40-minute traffic delay on the southbound M6 from junction 36 due to congestion. 

National Highways expects traffic to return to normal between 6pm and 6.15pm. 

There is also congestion on the M6 southbound exit slip at junction 36, which is causing delays of around ten minutes.

The southbound carriageway in Cumbria between J42 for Carlisle and J41 for Penrith has been closed off since around 11pm last night

A stretch of the M6 is fully shut this morning following a 'serious' crash.

The southbound carriageway in Cumbria between J42 for Carlisle and J41 for Penrith has been closed off since around 11pm last night (December 7). Police, paramedics and traffic officers were called to reports of a two-vehicle collision just south of Southwaite Services.

The driver of the car has been taken to hospital with 'serious injuries'. National Highways said police collision investigations have been ongoing through the night.

Due to the nature of the incident, the carriageway is expected to remain closed for 'a number of hours'. Diversions are in place along the A6.

M6 southbound reopens

Inrix now reports that the M6 southbound has reopened following an earlier accident investigation

'Traffic coping well'

Traffic monitoring service Inrix reports:

M6 Southbound closed due to accident from J42 A6 (Carlisle South) to J41 B5305 (Catterlen). Traffic is coping well. Closed since around midnight

Diversion route

Road users are advised to follow the solid black square diversion symbol on road signs:

• Exit the M6 at J42, at Golden Fleece roundabout take second exit signed A6, Penrith
• Travel south on the A6 through Low Hesket, High Hesket and Plumpton
• At Stoneybeck roundabout take fourth exit (B5305) towards Wigton
• At J41 (M6) take first exit to rejoin the M6 southbound

'Expected to remain closed for a number of hours'

National Highways said the M6 is closed southbound between J42 and J41 (Carlisle to Penrith) due to a 'serious collision'.

A spokesperson said:

At approximately 22:58 yesterday evening a serious collision occurred near Calthwaite resulting in the closure of the M6 between J42 & J41. Emergency services including Cumbria Police responded to the incident. Police collision investigations have been ongoing through the night. Due to the nature of the incident, the carriageway is expected to remain closed for a number of hours.

Police statement

Cumbria Police said:

The M6 southbound between junctions 42 and 41 is currently closed as emergency services are responding to a road traffic collision. Police were contacted at 10:55pm (7 December) with a report of a two vehicle collision, just south of Southwaite Services, involving a car and a HGV. Emergency services are currently at the scene. The driver of the car has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.
