Spinny Assured Maruti Suzuki Baleno

The Maruti Baleno is a petrol-only model, so that might deter some people from going after it. However, it is quite fuel efficient and going by its ARAI claimed efficiency of 22.35 km/l for the manual and 22.94 km/l for the automatic, and you can easily eke out 20km/l with a steady foot in the real world, irrespective of the transmission you choose. It’s also got comfortable seats for four people and a large-enough boot to take in all their luggage for a three-to-four-day trip – making it one of the best cars for long distance driving in India. The Baleno, being a Maruti, is also durable and affordable to run and maintain, but as far as safety rating goes, the new Baleno is yet to be tested by the Global NCAP. Nevertheless, it packs in ABS with EBD, dual front airbags, front seat belts with pre-tensioner and ISOFIX mounting points in all its variants. The higher variants add side and curtain airbags, and ESP with hill hold on the automatic variants as well. Overall, refinement, convenience, and low running-costs are the biggest advantages of picking the Baleno.

Spinny Assured Hyundai i20 with sunroof

When it comes to powertrain options, the Hyundai i20 is like a buffet. You have two petrol engines to choose from (one is naturally aspirated while the other is turbocharged), and you get the option of either a manual, or an automatic with both of them. Among the i20’s petrol and diesel engines, the diesel is the winner as far as fuel efficiency goes: it is a true mile-muncher, making it on of the best cars for long distance driving in India. Now, the diesel is only available with a manual transmission, but the silver lining here is that it’s a very easy manual to drive. The clutch action is light and the gear shifts slot in smoothly. The i20 is also a feature-rich offering, and vows to keep the most enthusiastic technophiles hooked with its list of premium features. In the Global NCAP crash test, it secured a 3-star safety rating. In terms of safety kit, you get the protection of six airbags on the top variants, along with ESC and hill-hold, and ISOFIX mounting points. The i20 is overall a good option if you are looking for performance, refinement and an extensive feature list.

Homegrown carmaker Tata Motors also makes a case for itself in the hatchback segment, with its premium hatchback Altroz. It’s offered with regular petrol and diesel engines, and a turbo-petrol engine as well. All three can be had with a manual transmission, but if you want an automatic, then you will be limited to the regular petrol motor. In all fairness, the Baleno is ahead of the Altroz in terms of refinement, and the i20 does deliver more outright power. It, however, claws back a lot of ground with its stellar 5-star safety rating conferred upon it by Global NCAP. The Altroz packs in dual airbags and ISOFIX mounting points as well. The cabin experience of the Altroz is also superb as you get loads of overall space and the seats are supportive and angled quite well. Overall, you should consider the Altroz if safety is number one on your list of priorities along with a roomy cabin.

Best Cars for Long Distance Driving: Sedans

Next in our list of best cars for long distance driving in India in the Maruti Ciaz. Keeping its competition in mind, the Ciaz has been around for a while. The design may seem familiar, you get one engine option, and in terms of features, its rivals do offer more. But, that’s where the downsides end. It’s a comfortable car to drive, there is loads and loads of cabin space (the rear cabin space is humongous), a 510-litre boot allows you to take in quite a bit of luggage, and the 1.5-litre petrol engine might be the solitary offering, but it’s super-refined and likes to rev its guts out. The manual too is very easy to drive and it is the better pick for those who like to have a little bit of fun. The Ciaz automatic could go to those who like a calmer driving experience. The best bit? Both powertrains have an ARAI rated efficiency of over 20km/l, which means the fuel bills won’t start stacking up either!

honda-city-eHEV-hybrid-cars

The Honda City e:HEV is the new kid on the block, but still makes it to the list of best cars for long distance driving in India for a different reason. We have put it on the list because it is a hybrid, and an excellent one at that. It has a 40-litre petrol tank and if you pair that with its 26.5km/l efficiency (claimed by ARAI), you have a whopping range of 1060kms. Safety too has been covered rather generously, as you get six airbags, ISOFIX mounting points, hill-hold, an electronic parking brake, TPMS, and even ADAS features. The City’s refinement levels are also top notch, although your choice is limited to a single variant, and a single powertrain (automatic only as it’s a hybrid). Where the City e:HEV loses out is on boot space. It is limited to 306 litres due to the Li-ion battery pack for the hybrid system protruding into the boot, so keep in mind that you won’t be able to pack too generously, if you pick the City e:HEV.

Hyundai Verna

The Verna, like the Ciaz, has enjoyed a long run on Indian roads. Its design has stayed unaltered, and its cabin space isn’t too generous, especially in the back seat. But being a Hyundai, the Verna is stuffed with features, there are a multitude of powertrain options all of which are decent to drive, if not extraordinary. Out of the three engine options (one naturally-aspirated petrol, one diesel and one turbo-petrol), you get both automatic and manual options with the first two, but only an automatic with the turbo-petrol. The fuel efficiency of the diesel is also highly rated (25km/l for the manual and 21.3km/l for the manual). You also get six airbags on the top two variants of the sedan. At 480 litres, the Verna’s boot space may seem low on paper, but the gap is marginal in the real world. The car’s NCAP scores aren’t as good as the newer cars’ but overall Verna is a loaded and refined package, no matter which variant and powertrain you pick. A worthy entrant in the list of best cars for long distance driving in India, we think.

Best Cars for Long Distance Driving: MPVs

When it comes to taking everyone in, there are few cars in our price range that do it better than the Ertiga. An obvious choice among the best cars for long distance driving in India, Ertiga has all three rows offering adequate space, and you even get a separate A/C unit for the rear passengers, meaning that the rear half of the cabins stays as cool as the front. The last row also gets its own cupholders. When it comes to features, the Ertiga is moderately loaded, as it gets everything you would require on your drive. However, being pampered lavishly is another thing. For engines you get a petrol motor, with the option of a manual or an automatic. The Ertiga however also gets a CNG variant, and while the tank does eat into your boot space, it makes up with its 26.11km/kg fuel efficiency figure (ARAI). That means that day road trips where you don’t really need to haul in a lot of luggage will prove to be the Ertiga’s forte. As far as safety goes, the Ertiga scored a 3-star safety rating in a crash test conducted by Global NCAP back in 2019. The Ertiga has received a facelift since then, but structurally, it’s the same vehicle. You get dual airbags standard on all variants, and front side airbags on the top variant. There is ESP with hill hold as well, and ISOFIX mounting points too. Overall, the Ertiga is a value-for-money offering.

Spinny Assured Kia Carens

An impromptu road trip often means impromptu additions to the passenger list, and it is moments like these that the Carens really helps out. It’s a six- or seven-seater depending on the configuration you pick, and a genuine one at that. The last-row experience is not business-class like, but compared to everything also on the market, you have a lot of space and don’t feel claustrophobic because of the huge glass area. The features list is also impressive, and you get multiple engine and transmission options as well. It’s well-tuned for all kinds of terrain and the engine is quite efficient as well. Now obviously, with all rows of seating up, you won’t have a lot of luggage space left, but with the third-row down, the Carens has the ability to swallow a lot of luggage. Kia also offers six airbags (among other safety features) as standard on all variants of the Carens, but the 3-star safety is not the best in its price bracket.

The Innova Crysta is the quintessential people-carrier of India, and rightly so. Seeing Innovas with over 5 lakh kilometres on the odometer is a common sight. It offers a proper “captain-seat” experience in its 7-seater avatar, but an 8-seat version is available as well. This is keeping in mind that the third row can take in three passengers, but honestly, unless these are all small kids, you are better off packing a maximum of two adults in there. You have the option of a diesel engine, and a petrol as well, and both can be had with manual or automatic transmissions. Feature-wise, the Innova Crysta has started facing stiff competition all these years, with cars with way more features available for a lot less these days. But, the Innova Crysta more than makes up for it with its comfortable seating, relatively large boot (with the third row seats down), and bulletproof reliability. On top of it, Toyota’s service costs are bare minimum and it doesn’t take a lot to keep the Innova Crysta running beautifully for years. On the safety front, the Innova packs in three airbags on the lower variants and seven on the higher variants. It also gets Vehicle Stability Management and hill-start assist.

PS: The Innova Crysta hits our upper-limit when it comes to the price tag, but its lower variants are priced under Rs 20 lakh.

Best Cars for Long Distance Driving: SUVs

Spinny Assured Tata Nexon with sunroof

There are times the Tata Nexon has been the most sold car in India for a particular month, and that should tell you all you need to know about the popularity of this sub-4 metre SUV. You have petrol and diesel engine options (both powerful ones) and they get manual and automatic transmission options. So the Nexon does offer a lot of versatility in this department. And while its powertrains don’t offer the most refined experience, the Nexon more than makes it up with a roomy cabin, a wide cushy backseat that can easily take in three, loads of features, a plush ride quality, and most importantly, an unbeatable five-star safety rating from Global NCAP. On the safety front, Tata offers most of the safety features right from the base variant. They include dual front airbags, ESP with hill-hold, ISOFIX mounting points and even roll-over mitigation.

Spinny Assured Skoda Kushaq

Think you’re a spirited driver? Then this one’s for you. Skoda is known to make cars that appeal to enthusiasts, and the Kushaq is no exception. Like previous Skodas, the Kushaq boasts of solid build quality and safety features such as ESP and hill-hold to compliment. Then there are the six airbags. The highlight of the entire package are the engines – you get two. Both are turbocharged, both are petrol, and both can be had with manual and automatic transmissions. But if power is what you seek, then the larger 1.5-litre motor with the fabled DSG transmission may appeal to you better. Space-wise, the Kushaq may feel like a four-seater. That’s not to say you can’t seat five. In the Kushaq, the seats for the four outer passengers are sculpted, which makes them comfortable on long journeys, but that means packing in five may just be a slight squeeze. The boot space is a step back, but the Kushaq is also down in size compared to its rivals, so it makes up for it with its compact footprint in tight spaces.

Spinny Assured Volkswagen Taigun

The Volkswagen Taigun is a different version of the Kushaq. Underneath, it has all the same (good) bits such as the chassis, engines and gearboxes, and in terms of space and safety, it is similar as well. Where the Taigun differs is in its interior and exterior design, and on that front, it has a more understated personality than its sibling, the Kushaq. It’s bound to appeal to you if you prefer a more classic design, instead of the more sharp-edged funky ones that seem to be trending in the car world.

Spinny Assured Hyundai Creta

The Creta is widely loved by Indians. It, basically, popularised the midsize SUV space, and in its latest iteration, it’s evolved into one of the most all-rounded cars in the market. The design of it can be a bit polarising, but take into account that you have three engine and five transmission options, a feature-list that runs for pages (we love that huge panoramic sunroof), a 433-litre boot (the boot space of SUVs is generally less than similarly priced sedans) and a super-comfortable cabin, and you can now understand why we had to put the Creta on the list. In terms of safety, it packs in a lot of features but in its crash-test rating, the Creta could only muster a 3-star rating. Its fuel efficiency numbers are also not the best, but that has to be expected given that it is a bigger car, meaning that the engine has to lug around more weight. The Creta, then, is a very well-rounded package and will definitely impress all members of the family in one aspect or the other.

Spinny Assured Tata Harrier

If a 5-star safety rating is the first filter you apply when picking a car, then the Tata Harrier should be on your short list. Tata has built an inherent knack of making 5-star rated cars, and that has also pushed other carmakers to strive for better safety ratings. The Harrier also has cabin space, boot space (425 litres of space to be precise but as it is a square boot, you can make the most of it), and a punchy diesel engine on offer. You do not have a petrol option, but with the Harrier being a big SUV, most people won’t miss it. Some may not like the sound of the engine at higher rpms, but you have the option to choose between a manual and an automatic. A special mention for the automatic here – it’s a well-tuned unit and is quite instinctive in shifting gears. The Harrier also packs in a lot of features, and might we say, that panoramic sunroof can turn the night sky into a majestic view. Tata also offers quite few special edition models, so you have the option for a more customized look.

PS: The top variants of the Harrier are priced beyond the Rs 20 lakh mark, but you can get one that has a decent number of features for less than that.

Mahindra XUV700

The XUV700 won the ICOTY (Indian Car of the Year) award last year, so it’s safe to say it deserves to be on the list. It’s got a lot going for it. Its looks are the hottest thing on the market, it’s available in both five- and seven-seater configurations, there are powerful petrol and diesel engines on offer, there’s manual as well as automatic transmission to choose from, the cabin feels luxurious, and it’s packed with features. Safety kit is pretty robust, and you get an ADAS system as well. Additionally, it has a five-star safety rating from Global NCAP. The boot space in the five-seater version will fulfill all your road trip needs, and with the seven-seater version, you can just pull the third-row seats down. That’s quite a lot, but that’s not to say that the XUV700 doesn’t have its downsides. The petrol engine can be thirsty, impacting its fuel efficiency numbers. The diesel is relatively better, but as the XUV700 is a big car, you will have to make more room for fuel in your budget. And lastly, the XUV700 commands a long waiting period, so if you book one now, chances are you won’t be road-tripping anytime soon. But if a used XUV700 is what you’re looking for, then you can go ahead and check out our listings in your city right here .

PS: The XUV700 also goes beyond the Rs 20 lakh mark. The most notable feature you get post Rs 20 lakh is the ADAS system in the top trim, and AWD.

7 best long-distance driving cars in india.

best long drive cars in india

Travelling long distances has always been enjoyable in India for various reasons. For starters, there are countless locations to see while driving in one of the best long-drive cars in India . Another justification is the low cost of travel within India. The millennial generation’s higher disposable income is the last but not least of the reasons. Long drives are within their means. The days of reaching a limit of 300 or 400 kilometers are long gone. Nowadays, travelers travel the full length and breadth of the nation in one trip.

The next important point is that road trips are enjoyable but are there vehicles to support this newly discovered preoccupation of modern Indians? Yes, there are, thankfully. Take a look at the best comfortable car for long distance driving in India.

Best Small Car For Long Distance Driving

1. maruti baleno.

The Baleno gets enough mileage for lengthy rides despite being a gasoline vehicle. It is no small accomplishment to achieve 22.35 kilometres per litre. This is a significant accomplishment as it ranks among the best car for long drive under 10 lakh .

Even the automatic version achieves a similar mileage. It is simple to fit four individuals in the vehicle and enjoy a lengthy drive. Baggage is never a concern, thanks to the spacious boot. The cost of the Maruti Baleno ranges from 6.49 L to 9.71 L.

2. Hyundai i20

Another popular choice for those looking for a high-performance vehicle that will hold up well on lengthy travels is the i20. Due to worries that four sizable people would limit the petrol variety’s mileage, most voters choose the diesel option. However, the diesel version is only offered with a manual transmission. One of the best comfortable car for long distance driving In India for under ten lakh rupees is the Hyundai i20, which starts at Rs. 7.07 L.

Those who enjoy the rush of using a manual gearshift and feeling in charge might not think about this. However, because the manual gearbox is rather smooth, individuals accustomed to the automatic gearbox might not feel lost.

3. Tata Altroz

The Altroz from Tata Motors is among the best long-distance vehicles under ten lakh rupees because of its strength, performance, mileage, and durability. There are petrol, diesel, and turbo-petrol versions of the Altroz. On all versions, a manual transmission is offered. The exterior of the Altroz is robust. Price drops for the Tata Altroz in the region of Rs. 6.35 L to Rs. 10.25 L.

Due to its dual airbags, anti-braking system, ISOFIX, and numerous other security measures, the vehicle received a 5-star rating from Global NCAP. Altroz has plenty of room. Simply recline the seats and relax on the long journey.

Best Sedan Cars For Long-Distance Driving

4. honda city e: hev.

The vehicle also includes numerous safety features, like,

  • ISOFIX mounting hooks
  • An automatic parking brake.

5. Hyundai Verna

Verna’s design has not changed despite many years of use on Indian roadways. Being a Hyundai vehicle is just one of the reasons why customers favour the Verna. Additionally, Hyundai vehicles include a tonne of built-in functions.

The Verna is one of the best luxury cars for long-distance driving in India since, aside from a few small details, nothing distinguishes it from other long-distance vehicles.

Best Suv’s For Long Distance Driving In India

6. maruti ertiga.

In India, hardly many vehicles resemble long-distance vehicles. The Ertiga resembles a long-distance vehicle and drives and performs like one. The roomy car’s three rows each offer considerable head and leg room.

The Ertiga is one of the best comfortable car for long distance driving in India since no distance is too far for this car. The spaciousness and mileage the Ertiga delivers led some who purchased one to believe it represented good value. Maruti Ertiga pricing begins at Rs 8.35L.

7. Mahindra Scorpio

One of the most popular SUVs on Indian roads now is the Mahindra Scorpio. It is also among the vehicles most frequently suggested for road trips because of its superior features, robust design, stable handling, potent engine, and low maintenance requirements.

The car’s good ground clearance qualifies it for light off-road driving. It is one of the greatest SUVs in India for a long drive because it is one of the roomiest and can accommodate 7 passengers.

Make sure you have the right car the next time you plan to go on a long road trip. An SUV or MUV would be excellent if you travel with friends or family, but a hatchback or sedan would be ideal for travelling alone or with a small company. The long-drive cars in India listed above are great options for both!

The Jaguar F-Pace also won the World Car Of the Year Award in 2017.

Range Rover Velar:

Early this year in May Land Rover India commenced local production of the Range Rover Velar

The Range Rover Velar was an all-new model launched by the British marque, and after its global debut in 2017, the SUV was launched in India in early 2018. Early this year in May Land Rover India commenced local production of the SUV, launched at Rs. 72.47 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The Velar is positioned in India between the Discovery and the Range Rover Sport.

Land Rover Discovery:

The Land Rover Discovery won the 2018 NDTV carandbike Luxury SUV of the year award

Unlike the Discovery Sport, which is entry-level SUV from the carmaker, Discovery 5 is a full-sized premium SUV offering. We were one of the first ones to drive the SUV from India, and within months of its global debut, the SUV was launched in India. The Discovery has been quite well received, and it won the 2018 NDTV carandbike Luxury SUV of the year award. Last month, Jaguar Land Rover India launched the 2.0-litre diesel variant of the 2019 Land Rover Discovery in India.

While the past ten years have certainly been very exciting for Jaguar Land Rover, the next decade will have a lot more in store for us. Most importantly, India will see the launch of Jaguar first electric car, the i-Pace next year . Globally, Jaguar Land Rover will finally reveal the next-generation 2020 Land Rover Defender off-road SUV that we have been desperately waiting for.

Long-distance driving: Tips, advice & preparations

car

Here's how one can prepare themselves before embarking on a long-distance drive across India.

BHPian paragsachania recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

While I have been regularly doing Mumbai-Pune-Bangalore or even Rajkot/Ahmedabad - Bangalore for more than 15 years, I always say that I learn more and more from each of these drives. Here are some of the tips that I can give you to prepare yourself for the long drive:

  • Start very early, 0400am types - This will help you get the best average speeds and cover longer distances before everyone else gets on the road
  • Drive at steady speeds and merit of roads
  • Do not have a set target to reach a specific destination or breakpoint
  • Don't constantly keep looking at Google Map's ETA - It can show delays or faster progress and that can alter your mindset and driving depending on whether you are too late (and hence will drive faster) or early (and would want to reach even earlier)
  • Expect the unexpected - Traffic jams, roadblocks, delays to cross the booth
  • Expect the expected - Unruly drivers, misc town and village traffic, traffic police flagging you down during the day to check documents etc
  • Keep yourself hydrated all the times
  • As your family regularly if they need a break and take one (or many) if needed
  • Have at least 2-3 options for both your refuelling as well as food breaks - This helps you whenever you have made better progress or are delayed. Feed these locations onto the maps or share them with your fellow passengers over a text message/WhatsApp so it is handy and you don't have to spend time searching for one
  • Accept the fact that you can be delayed to reach your destination and no 2 drives on such long stretches can be the same in terms of timing and can vary significantly
  • When you are closer to reaching your destination, try to exercise extreme patience for it is natural to get irritated by the behaviour of fellow road users when you have another 2 hours to reach. You don't want to rush to reach that destination and this rush should not be a reason for any untoward incident that can spoil your trip
  • Lastly, drive in such a way that the energy and enthusiasm levels remain consistent throughout the journey - I have often seen drivers overtake at superfast speeds and then somewhere ahead they are driving dead slow only because they are either tired or have lost interest due to driving all day. This can be done well only when you drive at a consistent speed than rush.

Here's what BHPian pratik_2810 had to say on the matter:

I agree with you Parag. I just completed my return leg from Rajkot to Bangalore on 12th Nov, that too with my 9 month labrador who was on such a road trip for the first time. I have experienced that discipline is important to have a fruitful drive without getting bored, tired or overworked. Start early, even when you are on a multi-day journey make sure you start early. Cheers, happy driving!

Here's what BHPian normaltusker had to say on the matter:

In addition to what has been mentioned already, please also consider the below: Get your car serviced if it is due in the next couple of weeks. It helps to have the car thoroughly checked before the drive. Next, if not already done, get your tires aligned, rotated, balanced if it is due. Also, get the air pressure checked on all 5 tires to ensure you are not left with a flat while replacing a flat. Check if all the tools that would be required to change your tires in case of a flat are in place and in prim and proper condition. Mandatorily get your PUC checked if it is due. This is the first thing that the cops at the border ask for. Please get it done even if you are in a new car. Download offline maps on your and one more family member's phone. Please do not rely on GMaps Online only option because that may not work all the time. Invest in an offline map solution like Navimaps / Sygic etc. It helps. Keep a soft copy of all your vehicle papers on your phone and DigiLocker. You can also use mParivahan since that is also accepted by the cops. If you are in the habit of listening to music while driving, download them for offline play and avoid buffering. Create playlists if you have a favourite bunch of songs. You can thank me for this later. Carry lots of food irrespective of whether you are travelling with the kids or only adults. It is a human tendency to feel hungry the minute you are travelling. Have sufficient sleep and get good rest the night before you travel. This will prevent you from feeling sleepy when you are driving. Last but not the least, have fun, drive safe and be considerate of other drivers / travellers on the road with you!

Pick from popular cities, top ten highway driving tips.

As relaxing and uplifting driving on open roads can be, there are a few tips to make the long drives easier and safer.

Top ten highway driving tips

Most of us love road trips. A weekend getaway or week-long adventure trip; whichever sort of drive it may be or whatever season it is, going away with friends and family, is among the most easy-to-take vacations. But while the idea of a driving holiday is great, there are some guidelines you should follow to make the trip safe and fun. Road conditions in our country are unpredictable, especially on highways with no traffic enforcers, it's basically a jungle out there. Therefore you must be even more cautious in these situations. So, here are some important things to bear in mind before you set off on that road trip.

1 Pick a speed and stick to it

long journey car in india

Speed is one of the most overlooked aspects when it comes to highway driving. Maintaining high speeds on highways is easy as roads are wider and traffic is generally light. If there are signs that show a speed limit of 80kph, use them as a guide and stick close to those. They're primarily for your safety and that of others on the road and you should always try to comply with them. This, however, isn't easy. There's no enforcement to begin with and then, you often try and keep up with the rest of the traffic, all of whom are likely to be going too quick. So, the best thing to do is assess the road, see the conditions and set your pace. Wet roads, night driving, high speeds and tightly packed highways should instantly set off alarm bells. Take heed, slow down. If the road opens up and the visibility is good, by all means, speed up a bit and enjoy the road, but be smart about it and always keep braking distances in mind.

2 Lane changing

Switching lanes is among the most important driving manoeuvres. It becomes especially crucial on highways where most vehicles travel at high speeds. Do it wrong and the consequences can be severe. One of the most common mistakes made is driving in the wrong lane. Before you change from one lane to another, recognise the speed differences between the lanes and accordingly, alter your vehicle’s speed. The right-most lane is just for overtaking. Called the fast lane, it is often misused as a secondary driving lane. A slow-moving car can be a danger here. If you need to change your lane, make sure you give the appropriate signals and keep an eye on the differential in speed. Make a move only once you're sure there's a gap safe enough.

3 Keep safe distance between vehicles

long journey car in india

While driving on the highway, keep a wide distance between your vehicle and those around you. Traffic is always unpredictable and there could be a situation where the vehicle ahead of you could suddenly brake. Safe distance between that vehicle and yours buys you enough time to brake or avoid a collision. Always follow the 3 second rule. Look for a bridge or signboard as a reference point and check the time you take to get there after the car in front of you passes it. It is advised to keep this time at a minimum of 3 seconds. At night, increase that time to around 5 seconds. Be more cautious if you are driving through heavy rains or fog.

4 Overtaking

Another crucial aspect of highway driving is overtaking. According to a recent survey, of all accidents on high-speed roadways, the maximum occur due to error of judgment when overtaking. Correct judgement and timing are the primary points of focus while overtaking. First, anticipate the speed of the vehicle in front of you by giving the upcoming car a long hard look. Think movie, not snapshot, the former will help you judge speed. Check for vehicles approaching from behind before you pull out from the lane. Make sure you have the appropriate gear selected. A higher gear will take more time, hence, going to a lower gear is advised. Once you have overtaken the vehicle don’t suddenly move back into the driving lane. Build the gap between yours and the overtaken vehicle and only once it seems appropriate, switch back. Remember, these directions are for dual carriageways.

On single carriageways, you have to be a lot more careful. Not only do you have to keep an eye on vehicles approaching from behind but also on those coming right at you. Switch lanes only if the distance from oncoming traffic looks enough for you to complete the manoeuvre safely and flash your lights to signal the approaching vehicles. Remember, when overtaking, you're in the oncoming lane and you should exit it as soon as possible, without cutting off the vehicle you are going past. Hesitating during this move could cut down the safe distance between you and oncoming traffic and force the vehicle being overtaken to brake suddenly.

5 Appropriate signalling

As much as you should be aware of the movements of vehicles around you, it is equally important that you notify other motorists on the road about your movements. Always indicate when changing lanes, and in case you notice a diversion or an obstruction ahead that requires you to brake suddenly, turn on your hazards well before stopping and start cutting down the pace. Make sure to indicate when re-joining the highway after a stop.

6 Keep a check around using the mirrors

long journey car in india

Mirrors on your car are like an extra set of eyes. It is highly important to check the mirrors constantly. Make it a habit to glance at all three mirrors. Every time you want to make a move, take a look at the inside rear-view mirror. The wing mirrors should also be looked at, at regular intervals. While overtaking and changing lanes, the first thing to do is to check if a vehicle is approaching from the rear. Beware of blind spots as mirrors cannot project the entire view. Sometimes, the vehicles might be past the mirror range and right besides your car, so be careful. You can install blind spot mirrors which are basically small fish eye mirrors that can be attached to the side mirrors. They give you a wider range and help reduce blind spots. Rear-view mirrors nowadays have a day-night function by which you can reduce the headlight reflections of motorists behind you. Auto-adjusting rear-view mirrors are also available in the market for Rs 1,500 onwards.

7 Pit stops

long journey car in india

Stops at regular intervals is crucial while on long highway drives. Mishaps due to driver fatigue are the cause for about 20 percent of the accidents on highways. Pushing yourself just to make up time is the last thing you would want to do on a long drive. A tendency to enter a trance-like state after continuous driving is a common trait you might experience and is called highway hypnosis. Driving long hours at a constant speed and on similar roads, with the cabin at constant temperature, leads to the above-mentioned phenomenon. Stay hydrated and also keep switching between ‘recirculating’ and ‘fresh-air’ modes on the air-con. A change in temperature helps you stay more alert. If you are too drowsy to make it to the next checkpoint, take a quick nap by the side of the road. If you aren’t alone, keep swapping drivers. Also, avoid letting the fuel level drop below quarter tank. Roads ahead might not have fuel stations or might be closed. Don’t take a chance.

8 Rains/Wet roads

Driving in wet conditions increases the risk factor even more. There are many poorly maintained vehicles on the road which leak oils and fluids. Mixed with rainwater, this is a dangerous combination and if you're not careful, there could be serious consequences. Restrict your speed and avoid wet patches and puddles if you can. Driving through pools of water at high speeds should be avoided at all costs as it may lead to the car hydroplaning wherein the tyres lose grip and traction and the car could spin out of control. Also, avoid braking too hard as it is difficult for tyres to gain grip on wet roads and can lead to the vehicle skidding off the road or into another vehicle. During heavy rains, keep the headlights on even during the day as it helps other motorists see your vehicle. Use your hazards only if you come to a stop.

9 Night driving

long journey car in india

Travelling during the night should be avoided as much as possible. However, if you absolutely must drive at night, proper visibility is essential. Keep your windshield clean and all the lights working. Aim the headlights as per your seating position and make sure you don’t set them too high as they might disturb motorists ahead. Similarly, try not to use the high beam while overtaking or when you are close to the vehicle ahead. Stay alert as most truck and bus drivers are drowsy due to driving all day and may react slower than you would expect.

10 Breakdowns

In an unfortunate situation where your vehicle has had a breakdown, it is important to keep calm and follow these steps. Slow down gradually and start moving to the shoulder of the highway. Stop carefully with the car well under the shoulder lines and switch your hazard lights on. Place the hazard triangle behind the car at about ten to fifteen feet to warn other motorists. Examine the damage and accordingly call for assistance. Also, note down highway assistance contacts and look for emergency call boxes too; they are available throughout the highway at set distances. At night, switch on the interior lights to make the vehicle as visible as you can. Always try and stay in the vehicle until help arrives.

Driving on the highway requires concentration and presence of mind. Following the rules is not only safer for you but also for other motorists. Also, having a well-maintained car reduces the chances of any problems cropping up.

If you are looking for a car under Rs 10 lakhs, you would be spoilt for choice. You have everything from little hatchbacks, crossovers and sedans of different shapes and sizes. But if you are someone who likes to be driven around town, or have a large family, or even like to go for long trips, You may have different budgets and vehicle shapes in mind. So here are the five cars that offer the best rear legroom among its rivals.

Entry-level hatchbacks

2024 swift crash test

While this segment consists of cars like the Renault Kwid, Datsun Redi-Go, and more, the car that offers the best cabin space is the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso. The S-Presso has doors that wide-open helping ingress and egress. While the seating position is a bit upright, it offers decent leg and headroom for someone who is 6 feet, sitting behind a front passenger who is also of the same size without any worry. However, the S-Presso is not very wide, and neither are its competitor meaning, while you can seat three people at the rear, it would be ideal for no more than two rear passengers.

Mid-size hatchbacks

Between the Tata Tiago, Maruti Suzuki WagonR and the Hyundai Santro, the WagonR is the winner among the three in the segment. With it features the longest wheelbase among the three, and due to its tall boy design, ingress and egress are straight forward as you don’t even need to bend down. The seating of the rear passengers in the WagonR is quite comfortable, although a little upright, it offers plenty of shoulder room and knee room as well.

Premium hatchbacks

Among the premium hatchbacks, there are available in India , the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai i20 and the Honda Jazz are the most popular ones. The rear seat of the Hyundai i20 is quite cramped, especially if you have someone tall sitting infant. But the case in the Baleno and the Jazz is quite different. Both the Baleno and Jazz are evenly matched and both offer a similar amount of legroom and enough space for three passengers. Headroom in both the Baleno and Jazz are quite comparable and the seat recline is also quite optimal.

Sub-compact Sedans

While both the latest generation Honda Amaze and Maruti Suzuki Dzire are fairly good for ear passengers in its segment, and the Ford Aspire is also quite comparable to them. However, with Hyundai dropping the new Aura in the game, the latest-generation model has taken the game up a notch. The Aura offers arguably the best legroom and the rear seats are fairly comfortable. Being the tallest among the lot, the Aura also offers superior headroom as well. While all these cars offer enough space for 4+1 seating the Aura might just be the most comfortable of the lot.

Sub-Compact SUVs

long journey car in india

One of the most crowded car segments in India is the sub-compact SUV segment. Everyone from Tata, Mahindra, Ford, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Honda in the mix, and the Kia Sonet is also expected to join in soon. But among the ones on sale, it is the Mahindra XUV300 that offers the best legroom in the segment. It offers the longest wheelbase that allows for quite a lot of room around the bottom half of the cabin. Having said that, nearly all models in this segment offer decent space in the rear. However, the Hyundai Venue does fall short in terms of rear legroom against all its rivals.

6 most comfortable SUVs

Written By: CarToq Editor

CarToq Editor

Comfort and sport-utility vehicles don’t usually go together owing to the inherent build of an SUV and the purpose it was built for. However, there are buyers looking for an SUV which offers the most comfort as well.

CarToq takes a look at SUVs across price ranges that offer the most relative comfort. This is in terms of ride quality and perceived passenger comfort, rather than handling. We’re also not including MUVs such as the Toyota Innova or crossovers such as the Tata Aria, which also has the perception of an MUV rather than an SUV.

SUVs below Rs. 10 lakh

If you take a look at SUVs below Rs. 10 lakh, there are a handful on offer. We can straight away rule out the Mahindra Thar and Maruti Gypsy, as they are purpose-built off-roaders and not great in terms of comfort for passengers. In contention, we have the Premier Rio, Mahindra Bolero, Mahindra Scorpio and Renault Duster.

Tata Safari

6 most comfortable SUVs

The Tata Safari may not be a great SUV to drive, but for passengers it is a pretty comfortable vehicle to travel in. The large cabin area gives passengers a feeling of space and there is enough legroom and shoulder room in the middle row. The downside to the Safari is the jump seats in the last row and the fairly pronounced body roll when driven at speed. But if one chooses to just cruise on the highway, the multi-link rear suspension and double-wishbone torsion bar front suspension soak up the bumps quite effectively. The Safari is much better than the Mahindra Scorpio in terms of ride quality, with only the Renault Duster coming a close second.

Renault Duster

6 most comfortable SUVs

The second most-comfortable SUV below Rs. 10 lakh has got to be the Renault Duster as it has excellent ride quality. Built on a car platform (the Renault Logan), but with raised ground clearance and a monocoque body, the vehicle has excellent passenger comfort. Where it loses out on is leg space for passengers in the rear seat, where it is just about average. The Duster has a semi-independent torsion beam rear suspension with coil springs, while the front is independent McPherson struts. In terms of ride comfort the Duster one of the best to travel in.

Between Rs. 10 lakh – Rs. 18 lakh

If you look at SUVs between Rs. 10 lakh and Rs. 18 lakh, besides the top-end variants of the Tata Safari and the Mahindra Scorpio, you also have the Force One, Mahindra XUV500, Grand Vitara and Skoda Yeti. The XUV500, Skoda Yeti and Grand Vitara all have independent rear suspension, which is great for ride quality.

6 most comfortable SUVs

The Skoda Yeti has one of the most sorted suspension systems, with excellent ride quality and handling. Built on car-like monocoque platform, the Yeti does not have any body roll and has a very pliant ride that could give some cars a run for their money. The only downside with the Yeti is that it does not have much luggage space and just about Ok on legroom in the rear seat for two occupants. A third would be a bit of a squeeze. Yet, the Yeti is one of the best vehicles to travel in for its silent, comfortable and composed ride. The Yeti is a five seater only, comfortable for four only.

6 most comfortable SUVs

The Force One is a really large SUV with a long wheelbase. And it’s this long wheelbase that translates into good passenger comfort too. It has a multi-link rear suspension system that has been tuned by Lotus. The Force One has a traditional body on ladder-frame chassis construction. There is plenty of legroom in all three rows of seats, with either seven or six seat options. The six-seater is more comfortable as it has individual bucket seats in each row.

The other contenders such as the Grand Vitara and Mahindra XUV500 come close, but aren’t that comfortable. The Vitara has a sporty suspension system that’s slightly stiff, while the XUV500 has a stiff suspension system that tends to pitch about a bit.

SUVS between Rs. 18 lakh and Rs. 25 lakh

When you pick the premium SUV range, things get interesting. The most popular SUV in this segment is the Toyota Fortuner, but it is not the most comfortable. The sportiest of the lot is the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, which again is not comfortable. Then one is left to choose between the Renault Koleos, Honda CR-V, Nissan X-Trail, Mitsubishi Outlander, Chevrolet Captiva, Hyundai Santa Fe and Ford Endeavour.

Renault Koleos

6 most comfortable SUVs

The Renault Koleos is by far one of the most comfortable SUVs around. It has excellent ride quality and its monocoque chassis, large wheels and good ground clearance contribute to its planted ride. The Koleos and the Nissan X-Trail share a lot of components, based on the same platform. However, the Koleos has a better ride than the X-Trail, with good space for five occupants and about 450 litres of luggage space.

6 most comfortable SUVs

An old-time favorite of this segment is the Honda CR-V. This 5-seater SUV has a car-like ride quality with a well-sorted suspension system that proves effortless and comfortable for long distance travel. The CR-V’s suspension is slightly on the softer side and it is nice to travel in, be it the city or on the highway. It also has adequate luggage carrying capability.

A close third place would go to the Chevrolet Captiva if you are looking for a seven-seater SUV. This can carry seven people in comfort and matches the CR-V in terms of ride quality, except for slightly reduced legroom.

Along with the Captiva it’s also a close call between the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Mitsubishi Outlander, again two SUVs that provide good ride quality and comfort to passengers.

These were the SUVs that emerged as the ones offering the most comfort, after a discussion between a panel of CarToq experts. Share your thoughts on this.

The Possible Collapse of the U.S. Home Insurance System

A times investigation found climate change may now be a concern for every homeowner in the country..

From “The New York Times,” I’m Sabrina Tavernise. And this is “The Daily.”

[MUSIC PLAYING]

Today, my colleague, Christopher Flavelle, on a “Times” investigation into one of the least known and most consequential effects of climate change — insurance — and why it may now be a concern for every homeowner in the country.

It’s Wednesday, May 15.

So, Chris, you and I talked a while ago about how climate change was really wreaking havoc in the insurance market in Florida. You’ve just done an investigation that takes a look into the insurance markets more broadly and more deeply. Tell us about it.

Yeah, so I cover climate change, in particular the way climate shocks affect different parts of American life. And insurance has become a really big part of that coverage. And Florida is a great example. As hurricanes have gotten worse and more frequent, insurers are paying out more and more money to rebuild people’s homes. And that’s driving up insurance costs and ultimately driving up the cost of owning a home in Florida.

So we’re already seeing that climate impact on the housing market in Florida. My colleagues and I started to think, well, could it be that that kind of disruption is also happening in other states, not just in the obvious coastal states but maybe even through the middle of the US? So we set out to find out just how much it is happening, how much that Florida turmoil has, in fact, become really a contagion that is spreading across the country.

So how did you go about reporting this? I mean, where did you start?

All we knew at the start of this was that there was reason to think this might be a problem. If you just look at how the federal government tracks disasters around the country, there’s been a big increase almost every year in the number and severity of all kinds of disasters around the country. So we thought, OK, it’s worth trying to find out, what does that mean for insurers?

The problem is getting data on the insurance industry is actually really hard. There’s no federal regulation. There’s no government agency you can go to that holds this data. If you talk to the insurers directly, they tend to be a little reluctant to share information about what they’re going through. So we weren’t sure where to go until, finally, we realized the best people to ask are the people whose job it is to gauge the financial health of insurance companies.

Those are rating agencies. In particular, there’s one rating company called AM Best, whose whole purpose is to tell investors how healthy an insurance company is.

Whoa. So this is way down in the nuts and bolts of the US insurance industry.

Right. This is a part of the broader economy that most people would never experience. But we asked them to do something special for us. We said, hey, can you help us find the one number that would tell us reporters just how healthy or unhealthy this insurance market is state by state over time? And it turns out, there is just such a number. It’s called a combined ratio.

OK, plain English?

Plain English, it is the ratio of revenue to costs, how much money these guys take in for homeowner’s insurance and how much they pay out in costs and losses. You want your revenue to be higher than your costs. If not, you’re in trouble.

So what did you find out?

Well, we got that number for every state, going back more than a decade. And what it showed us was our suspicions were right. This market turmoil that we were seeing in Florida and California has indeed been spreading across the country. And in fact, it turns out that in 18 states, last year, the homeowner’s insurance market lost money. And that’s a big jump from 5 or 10 years ago and spells real trouble for insurance and for homeowners and for almost every part of the economy.

So the contagion was real.

Right. This is our first window showing us just how far that contagion had spread. And one of the really striking things about this data was it showed the contagion had spread to places that I wouldn’t have thought of as especially prone to climate shocks — for example, a lot of the Midwest, a lot of the Southeast. In fact, if you think of a map of the country, there was no state between Pennsylvania and the Dakotas that didn’t lose money on homeowner’s insurance last year.

So just huge parts of the middle of the US have become unprofitable for homeowner’s insurance. This market is starting to buckle under the cost of climate change.

And this is all happening really fast. When we did the Florida episode two years ago, it was a completely new phenomenon and really only in Florida. And now it’s everywhere.

Yeah. And that’s exactly what’s so striking here. The rate at which this is becoming, again, a contagion and spreading across the country is just demolishing the expectations of anyone I’ve spoken to. No one thought that this problem would affect so much of the US so quickly.

So in these states, these new places that the contagion has spread to, what exactly is happening that’s causing the insurance companies to fold up shop?

Yeah. Something really particular is happening in a lot of these states. And it’s worth noting how it’s surprised everyone. And what that is, is formally unimportant weather events, like hailstorms or windstorms, those didn’t used to be the kind of thing that would scare insurance companies. Obviously, a big problem if it destroys your home or damages your home. But for insurers, it wasn’t going to wipe them out financially.

Right. It wasn’t just a complete and utter wipeout that the company would then have to pony up a lot of money for.

Exactly. And insurers call them secondary perils, sort of a belittling term, something other than a big deal, like a hurricane.

These minor league weather events.

Right. But those are becoming so frequent and so much more intense that they can cause existential threats for insurance companies. And insurers are now fleeing states not because of hurricanes but because those former things that were small are now big. Hailstorms, wildfires in some places, previous annoyances are becoming real threats to insurers.

Chris, what’s the big picture on what insurers are actually facing? What’s happening out there numbers-wise?

This is a huge threat. In terms of the number of states where this industry is losing money, it’s more than doubled from 10 years ago to basically a third of the country. The amount they’re losing is enormous. In some states, insurers are paying out $1.25 or even $1.50 for every dollar they bring in, in revenue, which is totally unsustainable.

And the result is insurers are making changes. They are pulling back from these markets. They’re hiking premiums. And often, they’re just dropping customers. And that’s where this becomes real, not just for people who surf balance sheets and trade in the stock market. This is becoming real for homeowners around the country, who all of a sudden increasingly can’t get insurance.

So, Chris, what’s the actual implication? I mean, what happens when people in a state can’t get insurance for their homes?

Getting insurance for a home is crucial if you want to sell or buy a home. Most people can’t buy a home without a mortgage. And banks won’t issue a mortgage without home insurance. So if you’ve got a home that insurance company doesn’t want to cover, you got a real problem. You need to find insurance, or that home becomes very close to unsellable.

And as you get fewer buyers, the price goes down. So this doesn’t just hurt people who are paying for these insurance premiums. It hurts people who want to sell their homes. It even could hurt, at some point, whole local economies. If home values fall, governments take in less tax revenue. That means less money for schools and police. It also means people who get hit by disasters and have to rebuild their homes all of a sudden can’t, because their insurance isn’t available anymore. It’s hard to overstate just how big a deal this is.

And is that actually happening, Chris? I mean, are housing markets being dragged down because of this problem with the insurance markets right now?

Anecdotally, we’ve got reports that in places like Florida and Louisiana and maybe in parts of California, the difficulty of getting insurance, the crazy high cost of insurance is starting to depress demand because not everyone can afford to pay these really high costs, even if they have insurance. But what we wanted to focus on with this story was also, OK, we know where this goes eventually. But where is it beginning? What are the places that are just starting to feel these shocks from the insurance market?

And so I called around and asked insurance agents, who are the front lines of this. They’re the ones who are struggling to find insurance for homeowners. And I said, hey, is there one place that I should go if I want to understand what it looks like to homeowners when all of a sudden insurance becomes really expensive or you can’t even find it? And those insurance agents told me, if you want to see what this looks like in real life, go to a little town called Marshalltown in the middle of Iowa.

We’ll be right back.

So, Chris, you went to Marshalltown, Iowa. What did you find?

Even before I got to Marshalltown, I had some idea I was in the right spot. When I landed in Des Moines and went to rent a car, the nice woman at the desk who rented me a car, she said, what are you doing here? I said, I’m here to write a story about people in Iowa who can’t get insurance because of storms. She said, oh, yeah, I know all about that. That’s a big problem here.

Even the rental car lady.

Even the rental car lady knew something was going on. And so I got into my rental car and drove about an hour northeast of Des Moines, through some rolling hills, to this lovely little town of Marshalltown. Marshalltown is a really cute, little Midwestern town with old homes and a beautiful courthouse in the town square. And when I drove through, I couldn’t help noticing all the roofs looked new.

What does that tell you?

Turns out Marshalltown, despite being a pastoral image of Midwestern easy living, was hit by two really bad disasters in recent years — first, a devastating tornado in 2018 and then, in 2020, what’s called a derecho, a straight-line wind event that’s also just enormously damaging. And the result was lots of homes in this small town got severely damaged in a short period of time. And so when you drive down, you see all these new roofs that give you the sense that something’s going on.

So climate had come to Marshalltown?

Exactly. A place that had previously seemed maybe safe from climate change, if there is such a thing, all of a sudden was not. So I found an insurance agent in Marshalltown —

We talked to other agents but haven’t talked to many homeowners.

— named Bobby Shomo. And he invited me to his office early one morning and said, come meet some people. And so I parked on a quiet street outside of his office, across the street from the courthouse, which also had a new roof, and went into his conference room and met a procession of clients who all had versions of the same horror story.

It was more — well more of double.

A huge reduction in coverage with a huge price increase.

Some people had faced big premium hikes.

I’m just a little, small business owner. So every little bit I do feel.

They had so much trouble with their insurance company.

I was with IMT Insurance forever. And then when I moved in 2020, Bobby said they won’t insure a pool.

Some people had gotten dropped.

Where we used to see carriers canceling someone for frequency of three or four or five claims, it’s one or two now.

Some people couldn’t get the coverage they needed. But it was versions of the same tale, which is all of a sudden, having homeowner’s insurance in Marshalltown was really difficult. But I wanted to see if it was bigger than just Marshalltown. So the next day, I got back in my car and drove east to Cedar Rapids, where I met another person having a version of the same problem, a guy named Dave Langston.

Tell me about Dave.

Dave lives in a handsome, modest, little townhouse on a quiet cul-de-sac on a hill at the edge of Cedar Rapids. He’s the president of his homeowners association. There’s 17 homes on this little street. And this is just as far as you could get from a danger zone. It looks as safe as could be. But in January, they got a letter from the company that insures him and his neighbors, saying his policy was being canceled, even though it wasn’t as though they’d just been hit by some giant storm.

So then what was the reason they gave?

They didn’t give a reason. And I think people might not realize, insurers don’t have to give a reason. Insurance policies are year to year. And if your insurance company decides that you’re too much of a risk or your neighborhood is too much of a risk or your state is too much of a risk, they can just leave. They can send you a letter saying, forget it. We’re canceling your insurance. There’s almost no protection people have.

And in this case, the reason was that this insurance company was losing too much money in Iowa and didn’t want to keep on writing homeowner’s insurance in the state. That was the situation that Dave shared with tens of thousands of people across the state that were all getting similar letters.

What made Dave’s situation a little more challenging was that he couldn’t get new insurance. He tried for months through agent after agent after agent. And every company told him the same thing. We won’t cover you. Even though these homes are perfectly safe in a safe part of the state, nobody would say yes. And it took them until basically two days before their insurance policy was going to run out until they finally found new coverage that was far more expensive and far more bare-bones than what they’d had.

But at least it was something.

It was something. But the problem was it wasn’t that good. Under this new policy, if Dave’s street got hit by another big windstorm, the damage from that storm and fixing that damage would wipe out all the savings set aside by these homeowners. The deductible would be crushingly high — $120,000 — to replace those roofs if the worst happened because the insurance money just wouldn’t cover anywhere close to the cost of rebuilding.

He said to me, we didn’t do anything wrong. This is just what insurance looks like today. And today, it’s us in Cedar Rapids. Everyone, though, is going to face a situation like this eventually. And Dave is right. I talked to insurance agents around the country. And they confirmed for me that this kind of a shift towards a new type of insurance, insurance that’s more expensive and doesn’t cover as much and makes it harder to rebuild after a big disaster, it’s becoming more and more common around the country.

So, Chris, if Dave and the people you spoke to in Iowa were really evidence that your hunch was right, that the problem is spreading and rapidly, what are the possible fixes here?

The fix that people seem most hopeful about is this idea that, what if you could reduce the risk and cause there to be less damage in the first place? So what some states are doing is they’re trying to encourage homeowners to spend more money on hardening their home or adding a new roof or, if it’s a wildfire zone, cut back the vegetation, things that can reduce your risk of having really serious losses. And to help pay for that, they’re telling insurers, you’ve got to offer a discount to people who do that.

And everyone who works in this field says, in theory, that’s the right approach. The problem is, number one, hardening a home costs a fantastic amount of money. So doing this at scale is hugely expensive. Number two, it takes a long time to actually get enough homes hardened in this way that you can make a real dent for insurance companies. We’re talking about years or probably decades before that has a real effect, if it ever works.

OK. So that sounds not particularly realistic, given the urgency and the timeline we’re on here. So what else are people looking at?

Option number two is the government gets involved. And instead of most Americans buying home insurance from a private company, they start buying it from government programs that are designed to make sure that people, even in risky places, can still buy insurance. That would be just a gargantuan undertaking. The idea of the government providing homeowner’s insurance because private companies can’t or won’t would lead to one of the biggest government programs that exists, if we could even do it.

So huge change, like the federal government actually trying to write these markets by itself by providing homeowner’s insurance. But is that really feasible?

Well, in some areas, we’re actually already doing it. The government already provides flood insurance because for decades, most private insurers have not wanted to cover flood. It’s too risky. It’s too expensive. But that change, with governments taking over that role, creates a new problem of its own because the government providing flood insurance that you otherwise couldn’t get means people have been building and building in flood-prone areas because they know they can get that guaranteed flood insurance.

Interesting. So that’s a huge new downside. The government would be incentivizing people to move to places that they shouldn’t be.

That’s right. But there’s even one more problem with that approach of using the government to try to solve this problem, which is these costs keep growing. The number of billion-dollar disasters the US experiences every year keeps going up. And at some point, even if the government pays the cost through some sort of subsidized insurance, what happens when that cost is so great that we can no longer afford to pay it? That’s the really hard question that no official can answer.

So that’s pretty doomsday, Chris. Are we looking at the end of insurance?

I think it’s fair to say that we’re looking at the end of insurance as we know it, the end of insurance that means most Americans can rest assured that if they get hit by a disaster, their insurance company will provide enough money they can rebuild. That idea might be going away. And what it shows is maybe the threat of climate change isn’t quite what we thought.

Maybe instead of climate change wrecking communities in the form of a big storm or a wildfire or a flood, maybe even before those things happen, climate change can wreck communities by something as seemingly mundane and even boring as insurance. Maybe the harbinger of doom is not a giant storm but an anodyne letter from your insurance company, saying, we’re sorry to inform you we can no longer cover your home.

Maybe the future of climate change is best seen not by poring over weather data from NOAA but by poring over spreadsheets from rating firms, showing the profitability from insurance companies, and how bit by bit, that money that they’re losing around the country tells its own story. And the story is these shocks are actually already here.

Chris, as always, terrifying to talk to you.

Always a pleasure, Sabrina.

Here’s what else you should know today. On Tuesday, the United Nations has reclassified the number of women and children killed in Gaza, saying that it does not have enough identifying information to know exactly how many of the total dead are women and children. The UN now estimates that about 5,000 women and about 8,000 children have been killed, figures that are about half of what it was previously citing. The UN says the numbers dropped because it is using a more conservative estimate while waiting for information on about 10,000 other dead Gazans who have not yet been identified.

And Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House, gave a press conference outside the court in Lower Manhattan, where Michael Cohen, the former fixer for Donald Trump, was testifying for a second day, answering questions from Trump’s lawyers. Trump is bound by a gag order. So Johnson joined other stand-ins for the former president to discredit the proceedings. Johnson, one of the most important Republicans in the country, attacked Cohen but also the trial itself, calling it a sham and political theater.

"Rishabh Pant Will Become A Better Captain": Sourav Ganguly On 'Instinctual' DC Skipper

Rishabh pant returned to competitive cricket after a painstakingly long rehab following a horrific car crash in december 2022..

long journey car in india

Delhi Capitals' Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly feels Rishabh Pant is an instinctive captain and his leadership skills will refine with time and experience. The dashing wicket-keeper batter returned to competitive cricket after a painstakingly long rehab following a horrific car crash in December 2022. The 26-year-old resumed his duties as the Delhi Capitals captain. "Pant is a young captain, he'll learn with time. The way he returned from injury to play a full season; we had our doubts during the off season," Ganguly told JioCinema.

"Indian players are crucial, especially since the TATA IPL shifted to 10 teams. I am very happy for him that he returned to play so well over a full season. He has all my well wishes for whatever is next," Ganguly added.

Pant has time and again showcased his astute captaincy during the IPL, while he has also erred in his decisions a few times.

"With time, he'll become a better captain. Nobody is a great captain from day one, but he is an instinctual captain, he makes decisions on the ground. With more time, he'll get better." DC ended their league stage with seven wins and seven losses. Although they are still alive in the playoffs race as they have a mathematical chance, but in all probability they have all but played their last game this season.

The likes of pacers Mukesh Kumar and Rasikh Dar Salam rose to the occasion a few times this season and Ganguly was lavish in his praise for the duo.

"You've seen Rasikh's development over time. The more matches he played, the better he got. It's not easy to bowl on the Delhi wicket. This wicket is great, and the ground isn't that big, so I think for any bowler, it isn't easy to bowl here. Rasikh has improved a lot.

"Mukesh has been our best bowler this season. He bowls all the difficult overs, whether at the start or at the death. There has been no match this season where we didn't need his bowling in the death," he said.

"We knew that conceding sixes would lead to more losses, so he has consistently delivered there. Our Indian bowlers have been great this season."
