A History of "Safari"

When we say "safari hat" odds are the first hat people envision are pith helmets worn by the likes of President Theodore Roosevelt and other safari goers, and it can be a bit puzzling how such a style eventually led itself to be the safari brim hat we know today.

As pith helmet styles took on life outside of military use so that common folk could utilize the protection and coverage they provided, need for better shading factored in the want for wider brims, leading to styles like the slouch hat popularly worn most notably in Australian military during the 1800s to replace them.

Slouch hats were wide brim hats with a creased crown and a sloped, wide brim that could be pinned up on the sides as needed. They provided coverage from the sun and elements and from there, it's easy to see how our modern take of safari hats honestly caters to much the same.

RETURN ELIGIBILITY

Items must be in new, unused condition and in the original packaging to qualify for a refund. Some items are not available for return. The few exceptions that cannot be returned include:

• Items that have been worn, washed, or modified
• Used sun care products
• Any items not purchased from the Panama Jack ® website
• Items or promotions marked for final sale (i.e. "All Sales Final") cannot be returned or exchanged for any reason. The sale price is as marked on the website, and no additional discounts can be applied.

Please note that your orders original shipping cost (if any) is non-refundable.  

RETURNING PRODUCTS BY MAIL

1.  Click here to start your return. 2. Print your pre-paid USPS return label by clicking the "Get return label" button. Flat-rate return postage of $4.95  (* excluding Beach Cruiser Bicycles ) will be deducted from the customers refund total.  Please note that we do not process exchanges. 3. Pack all of the returned items, along with a print out of your packing slip, and attach the USPS shipping label on top of the box. You can use the box the items arrived in or another box if you prefer. 4. Take your packaged return to your local USPS post office, or hand it directly to a postal carrier, to confirm shipping. 5. You will receive an email confirmation once we have received your items, and after your refund is issued.

PROCESSING REFUNDS

We will process your credit once the item is received and inspected. Allow two weeks for processing, and one to seven business days to receive your credit. All credits for returns will be applied directly to the original form of payment.

INCORRECT, MISSING, OR DEFECTIVE ITEMS

DAMAGED PACKAGES

We carefully package all of our products to arrive on your doorstep safe and secure. If an item does arrive damaged or with parts missing, please notify us via  email: [email protected]  or  1-800-840-5225  immediately, and we will send a replacement (depending on availability). Please include your original web reference number or order number. We may ask for pictures of the damage for quality control purposes.

MISSING PACKAGES

Panama Jack® is not responsible for packages that are lost, stolen, or damaged during shipping. You assume all liability for packages verified delivered by the carrier with tracking information.

CARRIER RETURNED PACKAGES

Any packages returned to us marked as undeliverable will be processed for a refund, less any shipping charges incurred. We will not reship orders marked as undeliverable. Customers will need to process a new order with a corrected address.

When Will My Order Arrive?

We are committed to do all in our power to ensure our customers' orders are completed fully and without delay. However, please note orders’ arrival dates cannot be guaranteed as the volume of orders, postal mishandling, and technical malfunctions could have an influence.

We ship Monday through Friday, excluding weekends and select holidays. Orders are usually processed and shipped within 2 business days, but please note that there may be processing delays in shipping during sale events and peak shopping days. What is a safari hat?

What became the first safari hats were introduced in Asia and the Indian subcontinent through the 1800s as a pith helmet , also known as a safari helmet, sun helmet, topee, sola topee or topi.

These lightweight hats were made out of pith (a soft tissue found inside tree trunks) of the Indian sola tree and covered with a white cloth. They were first used by the European military, though they quickly realized that white hats made them an easy target, so started dyeing the white cloth with tea, to give them a distinctive khaki colour.

In the early 1900s, many Europeans in Asia started to were these pith helmets – and variations on them – as sun hats to protect their heads from the tropical sun. (They were even worn indoors by some who believed sunlight could penetrate their roof!) Understanding of the sun’s powers has evolved since then, as has fashion, and safari hats have developed to be an essential piece of kit when spending time outdoors in sunny terrain, whether on a trip taking in the desert, jungle, savanna, or, of course, safari.

And these days safari hats are being worn not just for protection from the sun, but as a fashion statement too, acceptable as an accessory of choice when going outdoors in any situation given.

What makes a great safari hat?

Whilst there’s a time and a place for the traditional pith helmet (fancy dress party, perhaps?), there is much choice for great safari hats around today – the question is, ‘what should I look for in a safari hat?’ We believe there are several things that you need to consider when buying a good safari hat:

The primary reason for wearing a hat on a daily basis – not just on safari – is to provide protection from the sun while you’re out and about. So just how much sun-protection will the hat provide? You might want to consider buying a safari hat with a wide brim so it can cover both your face and your neck and protect you from sunburn.

A waterproof safari hat is a good idea for a couple of reasons. The obvious one is that if it rains whilst you’re on safari and you don’t have shelter your hat can protect you from the rain. The other reason is that non-waterproof safari hats tend to be made out of cotton, which can start to smell a bit after a long day of usage. Buying a waterproof safari hat will make sure you’re protected from sun damage as well as from developing a bad odor.

They say that style and comfort must meet halfway, but if you must choose one over the other you should go for comfort. Why? Simply because you look the best when you feel most comfortable! And when on safari you can sometimes find yourself wearing a hat for the best part of a whole day, so it makes sense to ensure that any safari hat you buy is as comfortable as possible.

Most safari hats are made out of leather, rubber, cotton or man-made fabric. Which one you go for will depend on your personal preference, but make sure you choose a well-made safari hat that will last.  My personal choice is leather because in most cases leather hats will last a lifetime (and grow character) with proper care.

Style is subjective, but it all comes down to how you picture yourself wearing something. Make sure that when you buy a safari hat you really see yourself wearing it and looking at your best.
