Metallica began their WorldWired tour in support of Hardwired… To Self-Destruct back in 2016.

James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo have toured across the world since then – and it’s been revealed by Billboard how much cash the mammoth run of shows have brought in.

The website reports that the band’s grossed $10.3 million throughout January – taking the total figure to $155.9m since the live shows got under way.

As for ticket sales, Metallica have sold a total, so far, of 1,554,470 – and that’s before they hit the road again in the US later this month .

Metallica will also return to Europe later this year for shows throughout May, June, July and August.

Billboard also report that since 1990 when they began tracking tour earnings, Metallica have grossed more than $600m and sold over 10m tickets around the world.

Earlier this month, Metallica released their new album Helping Hands… Live & Acoustic At The Masonic , which was recorded in San Francisco in early January, with the event organised in aid of their  All Within My Hands Foundation .

Metallica, KISS, Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Queen + Adam Lambert were among the top-grossing touring artists of the 12-month period ending on October 31, according to reports in Billboard .

In the magazine’s just-published year-end Boxscore chart was topped for the second consecutive year by Ed Sheeran, Mostly headed up by pop and hip-hop artists, the year’s Top Tours chart are closer to earth than the few gargantuan tours that reigned over 2018. Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and Beyoncé & Jay-Z all hit career highs with massive global stadium tours, topping $400 million (Sheeran’s ‘The Divide’ Tour), $300 million (Swift’s ‘Reputation] Stadium Tour), and $250 million (The Carters’ ‘On The Run II’ Tour).

Metallica were the highest-ranked hard rock act (and sixth overall), with a combined gross of $177 million from 46 reported concerts during the band’s ongoing ‘WorldWired’ tour . The band sold 1.7 million tickets around the world during the 12-month time frame that determined the chart’s rankings.

‘operation: mindcrime’: queensrÿche’s lofty concept album.

The initial legs of KISS’ ‘End Of The Road’ tour did brisk business, as the band — which ranked 10th on the year-end chart — grossed $89 million from sales of more than 850,000 tickets at 72 reported shows.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s annual holiday tour continued to be a major draw, as the Yuletide rockers — who ranked 30th on the chart — sold more than 900,000 tickets at 92 reported shows during their 2018 tour for a gross of $57 million. As with KISS and Metallica, these figures don’t represent every show performed during the reporting period, as TSO’s 2018 tour featured 14 additional dates from which attendance figures were not reported to Billboard for whatever reason.

The only other hard rock group included on Billboard’s chart — which ranked artists by gross income rather than the number of tickets sold — was Queen + Adam Lambert (No. 39), who grossed $46 million from sales of 370,000 tickets across 25 reported performances.

Among the other top-grossing acts on the year-end Boxscore chart were perennial top draws such as Elton John (No. 4), The Rolling Stones (No. 5) and Paul McCartney (No. 8).

METALLICA Grossed $70 Million From 13 Shows On Summer 2019 Leg Of 'WorldWired' Tour

According to Billboard 's Boxscore data, the summer 2019 leg of METALLICA 's "WorldWired" tour grossed more than $70 million from 13 shows. The highest-earning date ($8,194,075) took place on June 8 in Meath, Ireland, where a near-capacity crowd of 71,122 saw the band perform at the iconic venue Slane Castle. The second-biggest concert ($6,745,329) happened on July 6 in Berlin, Germany, where 68,452 fans were packed into the sold-out Olympiastadion.

Music industry trade magazine Pollstar recently named METALLICA one of the top-earning hard rock and metal tours of the "2019 Midyear" reporting period, which covered the six-month range from November 22, 2018 to May 22, 2019.

The group's 21 North American "WorldWired" arena shows during the reporting period grossed a total of $41.7 million, good for an average per-show gross of $1.99 million. With an average attendance of more than 16,000, the band moved nearly 350,000 tickets altogether.

On a per-show basis, METALLICA did even better internationally, as five of the six European stadium concerts the group performed in May grossed a combined $28 million thanks to an average attendance of more than 58,000. Altogether, the band grossed $69.7 million in the six-month reporting period, making the group the fourth highest-grossing act in the world during that time behind only Elton John , Pink and Justin Timberlake — each of whom sold fewer tickets but had a higher average ticket price.

METALLICA 's "WorldWired" tour has played more than 130 shows across the world since its 2016 kick-off.

Last November, drummer Lars Ulrich told The Mercury News that the trek could last through early 2020.

The San Francisco Bay Area metal giants have been touring in support of their latest album, "Hardwired… To Self-Destruct" , which came out in November 2016.

Heavy Metal, Heavy Earnings: The Financial Story of Metallica

With an estimated net worth reaching up to $1 billion as of 2023, Metallica’s financial journey mirrors their rise in the music world. From selling over 150 million albums to their philanthropic ventures, the band has not only shaped heavy metal but also mastered the art of financial success.

Members of Metallica posed for a promotional photo, with Robert Trujillo on the far left holding a bass guitar, Lars Ulrich next, wearing a cap and a dark outfit with his hands in his pockets, James Hetfield in the center with his arms crossed, sporting a light beard, and Kirk Hammett on the far right holding an electric guitar. The band members are dressed in black, with a red-orange light casting a glow on the scene, adding intensity to the group's composed and confident demeanor.

  • As of 2023, Metallica’s net worth is estimated to be between $900 million to $1 billion, underpinned by selling over 150 million albums worldwide.
  • Each band member has accumulated significant wealth, with Lars Ulrich’s net worth at $350 million, James Hetfield at $300 million, Kirk Hammett at $200 million, and Robert Trujillo estimated between $35 and $65 million.
  • Metallica has actively engaged in philanthropy through their All Within My Hands Foundation, focusing on education, fighting hunger, and other critical services, significantly impacting communities and demonstrating their commitment to social causes.

Rocking the Financial Charts

As of 2023, Metallica’s net worth stands impressively between $900 million to $1 billion . With over 150 million albums sold worldwide , including more than 75 million in the United States alone, Metallica’s commercial success is unparalleled. Their record sales have garnered them numerous awards and recognitions, including nine Grammy Awards , making them one of the richest and most successful music bands in history.

Notably, Metallica was listed among the world’s highest-paid celebrities in 2019 by Forbes. Their remarkable sales figures have led to numerous certifications: 49x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), 27x Platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), and 23x Platinum by Music Canada (MC). One of the band’s most significant financial contributors is their self-titled fifth album, commonly referred to as “The Black Album.” Released on August 12, 1991, it marked a stylistic shift for Metallica towards a more polished, arena metal sound and became one of the biggest-selling rock and metal albums of all time with over 30 million sales worldwide , achieving platinum status in multiple countries.

Metallica’s net worth, bolstered by record-breaking album sales and one of history’s highest-grossing tours, showcases their financial dominance in the metal industry.

The “World Wired Tour,” which spanned from 2016 to 2019, stands as one of the highest-grossing tours in history, grossing over $450 million and attracting more than 5 million attendees globally.

To date, Metallica has sold 19,468,173 concert tickets , amounting to a gross value of $1,219,599,179 . A recent illustration of their ongoing touring success includes an average gross of $5,915,235 per show across five shows, selling 230,682 tickets for a total of $29,576,176 .

Metallica’s revenue streams extend beyond album sales and ticket sales. Merchandise sales contribute significantly to their income, with estimates suggesting that the band could generate about a million dollars in merchandise sales per stadium show. Even after accounting for a 30% venue cut, this would still amount to $700,000 in additional revenue per show from merchandise alone . Metallica’s financial success story is a combination of record-breaking album sales, lucrative touring, and substantial merchandise revenue, highlighting their status as one of the most financially successful bands in the history of rock music.

The Financial Profiles of Metallica’s Members

Metallica’s financial success extends beyond the band as a whole, with each member contributing to and benefiting from the band’s prosperity.

Lars Ulrich , the drummer and co-founder of Metallica, has an estimated net worth of $350 million as of 2023 . His wealth stems not only from his role in Metallica but also from his diverse investments, including ownership of residential properties, an extensive art collection, and music royalties. Ulrich’s multifaceted career as a musician, producer, and songwriter solidifies his status as one of the richest drummers in the world.

James Hetfield , the band’s frontman and co-founder, boasts a net worth of $300 million as of 2023 . Hetfield’s iconic status in the metal world, cultivated over four decades with Metallica, has made him one of the most recognizable metal performers globally. His financial success is primarily attributed to his longstanding tenure with the band.

Kirk Hammett , the lead guitarist of Metallica, has an estimated net worth of $200 million as of 2023 . His role in Metallica is a major contributor to his wealth, placing him among the wealthiest guitarists in the metal genre. Hammett’s financial standing is reflective of his significant contributions to the band’s sound and success.

Robert Trujillo , the bassist, has varying estimates regarding his net worth. As of November 2023, sources estimate it to be around $35 million , while others cite it as high as $65 million . Trujillo’s income is derived from his performances in various bands, roles in films and television, songwriting, and film production. The discrepancy in his net worth estimates may arise from different methodologies in calculating net worth or variations in the valuation of assets and income streams.

Each member of Metallica has not only contributed to the band’s monumental success but also carved out individual financial successes, making them some of the wealthiest musicians in the metal genre.

Metallica’s Impact Through Charity

Metallica’s influence extends far beyond the realms of music into significant charitable work. In February 2017, the band established the All Within My Hands Foundation , aiming to assist and enrich the lives of community members who have supported them. The foundation is dedicated to creating sustainable communities, focusing on workforce education, fighting hunger , and providing other critical local services.

The foundation ensures that every penny raised is donated to a variety of national and local charities, maximizing the impact of each donation. A key initiative of the foundation is the Metallica Scholars program, launched in partnership with the American Association of Community Colleges . This major workforce education initiative, which entered its fifth year in 2023, has expanded to 42 schools across 33 states and has impacted the lives of 6,000 students in the United States. It provides direct support to community colleges to enhance their career and technical education programs, offering skills and services to students entering traditional trades or other applied learning programs.

Metallica’s All Within My Hands Foundation exemplifies the band’s commitment to enriching lives through education and food security initiatives.

Metallica’s commitment to social causes is evident in their longstanding practice of supporting local food banks while on tour. Since the inception of their foundation, a portion of ticket sales from each concert is donated to a local food bank in partnership with Feeding America . Additionally, as part of the M72 World Tour , the band collaborates with The Farmlink Project to connect the tour’s catering to local organizations, effectively reducing food waste.

The band and its foundation are actively involved in supporting critical local services, particularly in times of emergencies such as natural disasters, public health crises, and community safety issues. They work with primary partners like Direct Relief and World Central Kitchen in emergent cases. A testament to their philanthropic efforts was the ‘ Helping Hands ‘ benefit concert and auction held in December 2022, which raised $3 million for charity. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and featuring performances from artists like St. Vincent and Greta Van Fleet, the event directed these funds back to the All Within My Hands Foundation, further enabling Metallica’s philanthropic work.

Metallica’s charitable activities showcase their dedication to using their platform and resources to make meaningful contributions to society. Their impact goes beyond the music industry, addressing key social issues and demonstrating a commitment to giving back to the communities that have supported them throughout their career.

The staging for Metallica’s tour is built to do just that, though, on the kind of grand scale well-suited for football stadiums. The band performs in the round, on a big stage in the shape of a ring that surrounds fans with tickets to the VIP “Snake Pit.” That means anyone on the floor isn’t actually all that far from the band – but also that the traditional video screen setup doesn’t work. So the band put the screens, and most of the speakers, on eight massive towers. During some songs, the colors were bleached out, making the footage one-hued to underscore the drama. Most bands would seem dwarfed by the scale, but Metallica rose to the occasion. More space just means more space to conquer.

The only drawback to the band’s over-the-top staging was that the same scale that made it so spectacular drained a bit of the band’s chemistry. With multiple microphones and several drum sets for Lars Ulrich – one would disappear beneath the stage and another would come up so he could play while facing another part of the crowd – everyone could see everything, but not always at the same time. The ring was so big that “Wherever I May Roam” (stark and dramatic as ever, toward the end of the show) could have been self-referential. But Metallica wanted to out-do itself, and it did. This kind of maximalism is only silly if you can’t carry it off – and Metallica does.

By stadium standards, the band keeps the music fresh, too. Sure, it has enough classics to spread over two nights – “One” and “Enter Sandman” on May 26, “Blackened” and “Master of Puppets” two days later – but it also pulled out “Whiskey in the Jar,” a traditional-by-way-of Thin Lizzy song that sounded very human even at this gigantic scale. For at least a few minutes, the stadium felt like the world’s biggest bar – if you can imagine a bar with eight 14-ton video towers – and if any crowd deserved a drinking song it was this one.

After “Whiskey” the band turned to “One” and then “Sandman,” a metal song that has acquired the patina of classic rock. There would be more surprises in two days at the next show, and the crowd pondered the possibilities as it filed out of the venue – more classics, a rarity, who knows? Like the best big rock shows, it would feel familiar but sound fresh. It was live but also, somehow, much bigger.

ROE Visual Carbon LED Technology Shines in Stage Design

Metal heads around the world are rejoicing as the legendary band, Metallica, is on the road again amidst another record-setting tour. The heavy metal band is currently making history on its M72 World Tour, selling out stadiums and recently setting a new attendance record at SoFi Stadium. The tour boasts an impressive stage design, supported by ROE Visual technology.

metallica tour gross revenue

Maximizing fan engagement, the stage design for M72 is in the round, including an “O” shaped stage with multiple elevation changes for the band. The “Snake Pit” was brought back in the M72 tour’s stage design, allowing roughly 1,000 Metallica fans to get up close and personal with the performers in the center of the stage. The Snake Pit has been a fan favorite feature of many Metallica tours dating back to the 1980-90s.

Eight ground-supported towers encircle the stage, soaring at 100’ in the air and provide video, lighting, and audio. Each tower features three video walls, which form a curved, cylindrical design. In total, over 1,600 ROE Visual Carbon 5 MKII (CB5 MKII) panels were utilized to bring the stage design to realization. While the video panels used for the tour are owned by the band, 4Wall Entertainment was enlisted for all the video.

The video content was supported by 16 Brompton SX40 LED processors and 11 disguise GX2C media servers. To complement the graphics on the LED walls, over 650 lights were incorporated into the show—a specific need for the stage design being in the round.

“It was a unique opportunity to see multiple variations of the initial stage design, and to be a part of the team seeing it through, from the different phases of technical drawings, system design, all the way through to the tour hitting the road,” explains ROE Visual Technical Director, Mike Smith. “The combination of a brand new product and custom manufactured rigging hardware presented a great opportunity for the technical team at ROE to provide high-level support for a tour of this magnitude.”

The band continues to set records on the M72 tour, with fans showing up for the legacy group in droves. On August 25 th , the band made history by filling up SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA with nearly 80,000 attendees, a first since the stadium’s opening in 2020.

“Working with Dan and his team on the design of M72 is a career high and a credit to ROE’s position in the live events space. Dan’s history with the band and overall dedication to perfection meant the Carbon panels were pushed to their peak performance capabilities” reflects Nick Jevons, VP of Business Development at ROE Visual. “This drive is palpable the moment fans walk into the tour venue and are immersed in the Metallica experience. Our team is thrilled to have contributed to what has become a sensational, history-making event.”

The last time the band released a new record was in 2016 with Hardwired…To Self-Destruct . Metallica’s latest album, 72 Seasons references the number of seasons an individual experiences in 18 years of life. This methodical detail, along with fresh setlists and musical guests, has translated into a theatrical feel, with many of the traditional touring components (visible cabling, flight cases, etc.) out of the audience’s sight. And because the stage is in the round, it was crucial for fans to feel a certain proximity to the stage and naturally, the band. An attention to detail that keeps their devoted metal heads coming back each tour.
