Mountain Bongo Breeding and Rewilding

The Mountain Bongo breeding and rewilding program stands as the beacon of hope for this critically endangered antelope. This ambitious initiative aims to reverse the decline of the iconic bongo, a striking and elusive antelope species.

Mountain Bongo Breeding and Rewilding

Located within the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, the Animal Orphanage is a unique facility to give orphaned, injured, neglected, abused, or frightened wild animals a second chance. The Orphanage provides shelter and professional care with the aim of releasing these animals back into the wild where they belong.

Animal Orphanage

The success of the Mountain Bongo breeding, release, and eventual survival in the wild depends on the support of the communities in surrounding areas. Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy (MKWC) has set up community conservation education and empowerment programs to create awareness on the plight of Mountain Bongo and sustainable natural resource management.

In October 2023, a group of 10 trekkers undertook the challenging journey to summit Mount Kenya's Lenana Peak while raising funds for the second annual Trek for the Bongo. Driven by their passion for the outdoors and a shared commitment to making a difference, they achieved a remarkable feat by summitting the peak in just three days, rather than the expected four.
