"Beyond description, and I’m an English teacher! We chose Caravan for our 50th anniversary celebration and could not have been more pleased. Incredible offerings and accommodations made for personal needs at each stop. Loved the sights and photo ops, a totally comfortable amount. Loved that we could watch beautiful and informative films if we so chose. Never felt tired, and we loved the mini-hikes. Our TD was truly extraordinary, the ✭ director of the year, and all museum guides and assistants were inspirational. We may consider another tour in the future (this was our first), it was such a positive experience." Mr. R.B., Englewood, New Jersey
"Looking for a carefree vacation? Caravan takes care of everything. Logistics, including airport and baggage transfers, hotels, sightseeing and activities, and reservations for all the events. Long coach rides can be quite boring, right? Not so if you were fortunate enough to have booked the Caravan Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore and Grand Tetons tour in August this year. Our awesome driver guided us as we traversed 1250 miles of spectacular scenery for six days. Mother nature treated us to thrilling views; geysers, hot springs, abundant lodgepole pine trees, lakes, rivers and wildlife. Bring your camera so you can capture the significant milestones and awesome sights along the way. We were on watch for waterfowl, beaver, osprey, eagles, and big game elk, bison, and deer. The Grand Tetons provide a fantastic backdrop as you take it all in. And don’t worry if you slept through geography and social studies class in high school. Enter our director, a great storyteller with colorful speech and quick wit. Never dull, the daily excursions traveling through the west all rolled up into one incredible trip." Mr. C.R., Chattanooga, Tennessee
"When I’m ready for another guided tour, Caravan would be a top choice. I was totally impressed with how organized everything was. So many great activities and sights: the hikes around the hot springs. Our tour director made the trip so fun, and our driver was excellent, always smiling, helpful and welcoming us aboard. Lots of rest and photo stops made our vacation enjoyable." Mr. & Mrs. A.N., East Syracuse, New York
"Outstanding. I cannot emphasize enough how pleased we were to go on our 2nd trip with Caravan. This was equally, if not better, than our last trip to Yosemite. We had a great time, felt safe, and couldn’t have seen as much or learned as much if we went at it alone. We cannot say enough good things about your staff and our experience. They aced it. Our TD was an excellent animator and director delivering on what was promised and more. We enjoyed all the sights and guided tours, very well chosen. Relaxing, scenic and very memorable, we’d recommend it to anyone." Mr. & Mrs. A.M., Abington, Pennsylvania
"This is my third Caravan tour and by far the best. I have highly recommended you to many people and show them your brochure. Lastly, but certainly not least, Abraham Lincoln’s stoic gaze reminds visitors of a man who led the nation through one of its most tumultuous periods. Lincoln’s dedication to justice and equality. Gutzon Borglum chose Lincoln to symbolize the preservation of the United States.

An informational marker about Abraham Lincoln detailing his life and presidency is located at the Presidential Trail at Mount Rushmore. The text is written in white and red against a blue background. Abraham Lincoln's carved face at Mount Rushmore, along with rocks and trees, serves as the background where the informational marker is placed.

The Mount Rushmore Experience

When you get to Mount Rushmore, there’s a whole lot more to enjoy than just looking at the statues and snapping a quick selfie. There’s a lot of things you can do.

Walk the Avenue of Flags

The Avenue of Flags is this cool display where you can see flags from all 50 states and even U.S. territories.

Arranged in alphabetical order, the names of the respective state, district, commonwealth, or territory are displayed on pillars just below each flag.

Soak up the view at The Grand View Terrace

Many visitors make the most of this platform by taking photos and selfies.

Hike Presidential Trail

This trail guides you to the base of the mountain, offering an up-close perspective of the sculpture. Along the way, informational signs provide insights into the lives of the four presidents.

A photo of an information sign about the Presidential Trail detailing the distance in miles/kilometres of the respective route. The sign includes a map of the trail and a caution that informs about the trail's strenuous nature, consisting of 425 stairs. This caution is written in black with a yellow background. Icons representing trail surface, cross slope, tread width, and grade are also displayed.

The initial 0.2 miles consist of an accessible trail suitable for individuals with diverse mobility needs, leading to the base of Mount Rushmore.

A photo of a lady in a black blouse, orange shorts, and dark sunglasses smiling at the camera, with Mount Rushmore in the background above her, and a couple of trees and rocks on the Presidential Trail.

For the best experience, I recommend following the trail in a clockwise direction. Spanning .6 miles (.9 kms) and featuring 425 steps, this path is primarily downhill when taken clockwise, with most of the steps at the trail’s end. Ponderosa pines and outcrops define the scenery along the Presidential Trail, offering changing views of Mount Rushmore.

A photo of a smiling lady in a black blouse and dark sunglasses poses in front of the camera with Mount Rushmore in the distant background surrounded by trees.

I’ll admit, I’m not the most physically fit person, and I hadn’t planned on taking on the Presidential Trail! So from the sculptor’s studio to the Grand View Terrace involves climbing some stairs, which left me a bit breathless.

At the Borglum View Terrace, there’s a drinking fountain and some benches, a nice spot to take a break, get a drink, and enjoy the awesome view of Mount Rushmore. It’s where we pause a bit to catch our breath!

Lincoln Borglum Museum

The area below Grand View Terrace houses free exhibits and a 14-minute film detailing Mount Rushmore’s history, construction, and the methods used for carving. The visitor center provides an informative overview of Mount Rushmore’s creation.

Sculptor’s Studio

The little building at the end of the Presidential Trail, right before you head up to the Grand View Terrace, is the Sculptor’s studio. In the summer, you can catch ranger talks here. You can find out when these talks are happening at the Information Center when you first come in or at the Visitor Center.

A photo of a white two-panel door with handles on each side, featuring 'Sculptor's Studio' written at the top. There are two lamps on both sides of the door. A sign standee in front of the door says 'Presidential Trail' in white with a brown background, pointing left.

By the time we visited in the late afternoon, the sculpture centre was already closed. Though it was closed, we were able to see the plaster scale model through the window as we peeked inside.

A photo of Mount Rushmore is in the background. A notice sign in the middle of the entrance walkway displays the message 'no pets beyond this point.' Several people are walking towards the Grand View Terrace.

Summer months, especially June, July, and August, are the busiest with large crowds and high temperatures, along with the possibility of sudden rainstorms. Mount Rushmore remains open in winter, offering a less crowded experience, with cold weather and potential snow.

The best time to visit Mount Rushmore largely depends on your preferences.

A photo capturing the Avenue of Flags, a pathway lined with flags from various states, guiding the way to the Grand View Terrace. The flags, proudly representing different states, create a vibrant display on both sides of the avenue, with Mount Rushmore as the backdrop.

During our summer visit to Mount Rushmore, we chose to arrive later, around 5:30 PM. This timing proved to be less crowded, even on a weekend, and offered a cooler environment compared to midday.

An advantage of arriving later during the summer season is that the sun has not yet set, allowing you to view the monument as if it were still daytime.

6 Great South Dakota National Parks

N ational Parks in South Dakota include Wind Cave and Badlands National Parks along with multiple historical sites to explore. Jewel Cave National Monument is also in South Dakota.

We loved visiting both Wind Cave and Badlands National Park . Both parks are near Mount Rushmore so you can visit multiple national parks during one trip. We would love to go back and spend more time exploring this gorgeous area of the United States.

South Dakota National Parks

  • Badlands National Park

Badlands National Park is located in southwestern South Dakota approximately 75 miles east of Rapid City. The park is open year-round though it may be inaccessible in the winter. The park offers an amazing scenic drive, hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing.

The Badlands Loop Road loops on South Dakota 240 from Interstate 90. This 36-mile scenic drive offers the opportunity to see some of the main highlights within the park. The park protects the largest expanse of protected prairie ecosystems in the National Park Service.

A visit to Ben Reifel Visitor Center provides the opportunity to watch the park movie, pick up a junior ranger program , and learn more about the "Badlands."

  • Jewel Cave National Monument

Jewel Cave NM is located in southwestern South Dakota approximately 50 miles southwest of Rapid City. The park is open year-round but may have limited hours during the winter. The park offers the opportunity to explore the world's third longest cave.

Jewel Cave was discovered in 1900 and was considered a small cave. Over time explorers have mapped more than 175 miles of passages earning the cave the title of the 3rd longest cave in the world. The longest cave is Mammoth Cave in Kentucky.

All tours through Jewel Cave are on ranger-guided tours. There are two hiking trails within the park and in the adjacent Black Hill National Forest.

Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail

Lewis and Clark NHT is approximately 4,900 miles long crosses sixteen states following the Lewis and Clark Expedition.  The Lewis and Clark expedition led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark officially started in May 1804 and ended in September 1806.

President Thomas Jefferson was determined to send an expedition to explore western North America and find a feasible water route to the Pacific Ocean.

  • Minuteman Missile National Historic Site

Minuteman Missile NHS is located in southwestern South Dakota approximately 75 miles east of Rapid City. The park is open year-round and offers the opportunity to tour a missile launch facility and launch-control center.

During the Cold War period between World War II into the early 1960s, the arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union led to the creation of weapons of mass destruction.

The weapons were considered a deterrent to war. South Dakota housed a force of thousands of Minuteman Missiles. Each missile was stored underground in a silo and armed with a nuclear warhead.

Today you can tour a gorgeous new visitor center, the aboveground Launch Control Facility Delta-01, and the underground laund control center. Reservations are required and should be booked as soon as you know when you want to visit the site.

Missouri National Recreational River

The Missouri National Recreational River runs from northeastern Nebraska to southeastern South Dakota. The park includes 98 miles of the Missouri River along with 20 miles of the lower Niobrara River and 8 miles of Verdigre Creek. The park offers boating, fishing and bird watching.

The Corp of Discovery led by Lewis and Clark followed the Missouri River for its entire length.

  • Mount Rushmore National Memorial

Mount Rushmore NM is located in southwestern South Dakota approximately 24 miles southwest of Rapid City. The park is open year-round and offers the opportunity to view an icon of America.

Mount Rushmore is one of the best-known sites within the US National Park System . The idea of Mount Rushmore was born in 1924 when South Dakota historian Doane Robinson contacted sculptor Gutzon Borglum.

He had the idea of creating a carving on a mountain top in the area. Work on the sculpture began in 1927 and continued until 1941. Four presidents are portrayed on Mount Rushmore - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

  • Wind Cave National Park

Wind Cave NP is located in southwestern South Dakota approximately 50 miles south of Rapid City. The park offers the opportunity to take guided cave tours, camp, and observe wildlife.

Wind Cave is the world's sixth-longest cave system. Brothers Jesse and Tom Bingham heard a whistling noise and traced it to the cave's only natural opening in 1881. The strong wind blew Tom's hat off giving the cave its name.

Wind Cave became the eighth National Park in the United States in 1903. It was the first park in the world created to protect a cave. The park's recreation areas occur above ground as well as within the cave.

The park also protects an important tract of mixed-grass prairie. Visitors can watch bison and prairie dogs within the park.
