Store Championship Replaces Game Day

Store Championship events are officially replacing Game Day beginning with Phyrexia: All Will Be One. Coinciding with this change, only specific formats will be available for scheduling, typically aligning with the formats featured at the previous high-level competitive Magic: The Gathering tournaments, such as the Magic Pro Tour and World Championship.

The formats that can be used for scheduling a Phyrexia: All Will Be One Store Championship are as follows:

  • Sealed Deck
  • Booster Draft

In addition, Store Championship events run in a Limited format must only use the most recent Standard set release. For the Store Championship scheduled February 25 – March 5, that means you may only use Phyrexia: All Will Be One for your Limited format events.

Prerelease Early Sales Reminder

For The Brothers' War , we made your Prerelease bigger than ever, and that test will continue for Phyrexia: All Will Be One. That means that the full product suite is available to sell during Prerelease in any quantity—only at WPN stores.

Your players will get their first taste of Phyrexian perfection at their local game store, so we've given you the opportunity to expand your event offering during

Prerelease week to suit the way your community most wants to play. You can run any of the following event types during Prerelease week:

  • Traditional Prerelease (using Prerelease Packs)
  • Jumpstart Prerelease (using Phyrexia: All Will Be One Jumpstart Booster packs)

Don't wait to get started on scheduling: using Wizards EventLink to get your events on the books early gives you extra time to boost your advertising efforts and score additional preregistrations. As you schedule your event, use the Prerelease event template.

Prerelease Prizing Policy Update

Starting with Phyrexia: All Will Be One, we are updating our policy regarding Prerelease prizing. During Prerelease, you are allowed to use your free prize support packs for Jumpstart Prerelease events, Sealed Prerelease events, and Booster Draft events. However, your free prize support allocation will only be based on past Sealed play . You will be allocated 2 Set Boosters of prize support for every baseline Prerelease Pack in your allocation.

Are you ready for the Phyrexian takeover? Check out our early rundown of card treatments , then head to Wizards EventLink to get your events on the calendar as soon as possible.

The regular cards include 5 Phyrexian Panorama Full Art basic lands (#262-266) and 5 Phyrexianized Full Art basic lands (#267-271). [4] Alternate card frames have a different card number than the original version. [6] The Bundle basic lands are #272-276, the dark frame treatment cards from the Universal promo pack are numbered #277-281, the Bundle promos are #282-283 and the Buy-a-Box card is #284. Black-and-white "ichor" showcase cards are numbered #285-297, while the borderless versions are #298-324. #325-329 Phyrexian language planeswalkers. Cards with a borderless manga treatment for select characters and planeswalkers reimagined as Phyrexians ("What if") are #330-344. [7] The Oil Slick Raised Foil cards of the Compleat Bundle are #345-369. Borderless dual lands are #370-374. Extended artwork cards are numbered #375-403. The Standard legal Jumpstart rares are #404-413. The different treatments for Elesh Norn are #414-21 and Step-and-compleat foil cards are numbered #422-489.

The mega-mega cycle of Praetors are available in all three booster types, with Richard Whitter's borderless concept art. Each have the collector number and set code of their original printing. [6]

On October 14, 2022, three months before the release of Phyrexia: All Will Be One and even before the start of the spoiler season of the previous set , several Showcase cards from ONE were shown off on Reddit. [8] These revealed the step-and-compleat foil treatment and several mechanics. A week before previews started, almost all rares from the set were found packaged in Dominaria Remastered packs and subsequently spoiled on Reddit. [9]

Storyline [ | ]

This is the third part of the four-set Phyrexian story arc where the fate of Dominaria — and the Multiverse — is set to unravel. The Phyrexians grow ever stronger, as Elesh Norn inches closer to her plan to conquer the Multiverse . [10] We view Phyrexia from their point of view. They are antagonistic with each other. [11] The Planeswalkers who gathered to stop the Phyrexians on Dominaria lost — badly. Now, every plane of the Multiverse is in Phyrexian sights with their plan to invade them all. The only hope that remains is to take them out on their home turf, destroying the Phyrexian's means to Multiverse invasion . The risk that some of the heroes fall to Phyrexians is high, but the stakes for everyone else are even higher. Planeswalkers team up and head down into New Phyrexia to end the threat of invasion once and for all.

Five of the ten planeswalkers printed in the set are compleated , a disastrous casualty rate in preparation for the finale. The cards that represent the Story Spotlights in Phyrexia: All Will Be One are:

  • All Will Be One
  • Bring the Ending
  • Compleat Devotion
  • Nahiri’s Sacrifice
  • Phyrexian Arena
  • Planar Disruption
  • Resistance Reunited
  • Tyvar's Stand
  • Urabrask's Forge
  • Vanish into Eternity

Beadle & Grimm's [ | ]

Behold New Phyrexia , a Beadle & Grimm's product connected to Phyrexia: All Will Be One , was released on February 18, 2023. [18] It consisted of a Phyrexian -themed artifact / deck box designed to look like it originated out of The Fair Basilica , an in-world Phyrexian language translation journal, four matching alloy d10 life counters, 130 Elesh Norn -themed card sleeves and a Limited-print foil Phyrexian language Mental Misstep with art by Erica Yang .

Themes and mechanics [ | ]

Phyrexia: All Will Be One sees the return of Poison counters and the Phyrexian -flavored Proliferate mechanic. [8] To give a different proliferation gameplay experience to the -1/-1 counters from Scars of Mirrodin block and the +1/+1 counters in War of the Spark , neither of these counters are present, and instead oil counters are used. This would be the first set since the simplified Portal sets to not use stat-changing counters and is the only premier set or equivalent to not have any.

The new Toxic mechanic is a reworking of Poisonous . Instead of giving poison counter as a triggered ability, this is more like Lifelink adding the counters instantaneously ( Players dealt combat damage by this creature also get N poison counters ). [15]

The Corrupted ability word is also new. [8] Corrupted is a Threshold variant for abilities that can only be activated or triggered if an opponent has three or more poison counters. [8]

A keyword ability on equipment is For Mirrodin! ( When this Equipment enters the battlefield, create a 2/2 red Rebel creature token, then attach this to it ). This is similar to Living weapon .

Battle cry and Phyrexian mana are featured as callbacks to the last visit to New Phyrexia . However, other than for compleated , Phyrexian mana is present only as a cost to activate abilities. [19] Five of the ten planeswalkers printed in the set are compleated .

The set sees the promotion of two mechanics, flashback and affinity , to deciduous status. [20] [21] [22]

Card types [ | ]

The set introduces the Mite creature type . [15]

Planeswalkers are featured in both Mythic Rare and Rare, with ten total in the set.

Rebel is seen for the first time as a creature type since the Time Spiral block . Four cards with the type represent the small number of Mirran survivors (although Equipment cards with the For Mirrodin! keyword create them as well.) On the other hand, more than 120 cards have the Phyrexian creature type.

Sphere is a new land type , associated with the Spheres of New Phyrexia .

Atraxa, Grand Unifier lists the new card type Battle , as a teaser for an upcoming set.

Counter types [ | ]

Phyrexia: All Will Be One introduces Oil counters . [19]

Limited archetypes [ | ]

Cycles [ | ].

Phyrexia: All Will Be One features the following cycles .

Double cycles [ | ]

Mega-mega cycles [ | ].

For each of the visits to Mirrodin in Fifth Dawn , Mirrodin Besieged , and Phyrexia: All Will Be One , a cycle of instants or sorceries has been printed that depict the suns at their dawn, peak, and setting, with a mechanical link to the next cycle. All Will Be One printed the Twilight cycle, showing the "end" of Mirrodin, all of which are X spells like the Zenith cycle from Mirrodin Besieged .

Atraxa, Grand Unifier

This week in the world of  Magic  finance the biggest winner - by far - was Atraxa, Grand Unifier . The Phyrexia: All Will Be One mythic shot up from around $10, briefly touched $60, before dropping to around $45. So why did Atraxa go from average mythic to one of the most expensive cards in #MTGONE? Players have more or less decided that  Atraxa, Grand Unifier is the second coming of Griselbrand (Read the Fine Print) and as a result the seven-drop is showing up across formats in decks that can cheat it into play. The last week for Atraxa has been pretty absurd. Along with being the second most popular commander from  Phyrexia,  it won both Standard challenges on Magic Online (in two different decks) as well as showed up in Modern Creativity, Legacy Reanimator, and even Vintage Oath of Druids . We've seen crossover cards that are extremely popular in Commander and in 60 card formats maintain some extremely high prices lately (see: The Great Henge (planeswalker stamp) and The Meathook Massacre ), and as a result it wouldn't be a surprise to see Atraxa, Grand Unifier remain one of the most expensive cards from Phyrexia: All Will Be One .

Meanwhile in Commander, Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon is on the rise, increasing 58% this week to nearly $44. Thanks to all of the new toxic cards in Phyrexia: All Will Be One, poisoning the table became much more realistic in Commander, and even though Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon is technically an infect card rather than a toxic threat, it's still one of the best ways to poison out an opponent, so players are snagging copies to play in Ixhel, Scion of Atraxa . Just how much staying power poison has in Commander remains to be seen - sometimes new mechanics are fads that see a lot of play when a set releases and then quickly fade - but considering Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon has only been reprinted once, supply isn't super high. Expect it to remain expensive until it is eventually reprinted again.

Speaking of poison in Commander, proliferate cards are also on the rise, lead by Sword of Truth and Justice (retro) which gained 48% this week, climbing to $38, although cards like Viral Drake , Contagion Engine , and Inexorable Tide all saw a jump this week as well. In Commander it's fairly hard to deal 10 poison counters to three opponents using toxic or infect creatures, but getting a few counters on opponents and then proliferating them a bunch of times is much more realistic, which explains the sudden interest in old proliferate cards. Expect the prices of these cards to normalize a bit as the hype for Phyrexia: All Will Be One dies down, but in the short term you'll have to pay a premium.

MTG Pro Tour drama teaches important lesson: Never trust your opponent

Image of Danny Forster

Drama over conceding matches at Regional Championship Montreal for a Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour 2023-2024 season invite has ended, but no rules have been changed.

Draws and concessions have been in the MTG hot seat before at high-level tournament play, especially when a seed invite is on the line. The Pro Tour helped remove some of the controversy by allowing players who hit 12 match wins an automatic advancement to the top eight playoffs. But Regional Championship organizers, like the recent RC in Montreal, are allowed to have their own rules in place. This led to a verbal agreement between MTG players Brian Bonnell and Eduardo Sajgalik, in which one would concede if their final match of the time went to time, allowing the player with the stronger board state to advance and earn a Pro Tour invite .

mtg pro tour all will be one

The match hit time and was unable to end without either a concession or a draw. But Sajgalik didn’t concede, as was agreed upon, even though Bonnell had a stronger board advantage through his Domain Ramp deck. This earned Sajgalik a 13th-place finish with both players missing out on the Pro Tour invite. The Magic community was quick to blast Sajgalik for poor sportsmanship, resulting in a public apology from the veteran player. The apology wasn’t received well by the Magic community until Bonnell decided it was time “to put this whole thing to bed and move on with our lives.”

“I just wanted to clear the air about the events at the Canadian RC this past weekend” Bonnell said. “Sajgalik [@walaoumpa] reached out to me yesterday to offer his sincerest apologies. I accepted his apology and I sincerely wish him the best moving forward.”

Matches like Bonnel and Sajgalik had at RC Montreal aren’t common but they do happen. The only way to prevent controversy from drawn matches at the end of a tournament is to change the overall rules, creating uniform results at both RC and Pro Tour tournaments. It’s also advisable to not trust your opponent and always play to your best ability.

The next Pro Tour tournament of the MTG 2023-2024 season will run from June 28 to 30 at MagicCon Amsterdam.

Jimmy Dunne, one of the architects behind the PGA Tour's stunning reversal to strike a deal with the Saudi backers of LIV Golf, abruptly resigned Monday from the PGA Tour board with a letter that expressed frustration at the lack of progress that no longer included his input.

Dunne, a power broker on Wall Street and in golf circles, was not included on the PGA Tour Enterprise's new “transaction subcommittee” that will be handling the direct negotiations with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.

Recommended Videos

Dunne and Ed Herlihy, an attorney specializing in mergers and acquisition and chairman of PGA Tour Inc., were whom PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan leaned on when he first met with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the PIF governor, that led to the June 6 agreement .

The immediate result of the deal was an end to antitrust lawsuits neither side wanted and had already cost the PGA Tour in the neighborhood of $50 million. The tour has since brought on Strategic Sports Group as a minority investor in a deal initially worth $1.5 billion.

“As you are aware, I have not been asked to take part in negotiations with the PIF since June 2023,” Dunne said in his letter to the board first obtained by Sports Illustrated .

“Since the players now outnumber the independent directors on the board, and no meaningful progress has been made towards a transaction with the PIF, I feel like my vote and my role is utterly superfluous,” he wrote.

The tour, feeling pushback and resentment for the secrecy behind the June 6 deal, appointed Tiger Woods to the board with no term limit. The board now has six player directors — Woods, Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth, Webb Simpson, Adam Scott and Peter Malnati — and five independent directors.

Dunne is the second independent director to resign following the June 6 announcement. Randall Stephenson, former AT&T chairman, resigned in July over objections to the agreement with the Saudis.

Rory McIlroy resigned from the board in November, and player directors appointed Spieth to finish his term.

The move signals the tour in a state of disarray as it tries to work out a deal with PIF and start the process of unifying a sport that has been divided since LIV launched in June 2022.

The June 6 agreement included a deadline to complete a deal by the end of 2023. By then, the tour had private equity suitors and LIV Golf signed reigning Masters champion Jon Rahm and eventually Tyrrell Hatton.

Dunne said along with the lawsuits being dismissed — often overlooked as a key point in the agreement with PIF — the agreement did not contain an exclusivity clause that allowed players “a full range of options to seek outside investors.”

“That resulted in a multi-billion-dollar commitment from the Strategic Sports Group,” Dunne wrote. “I believe that history will look favorably on this outcome and the very real opportunities now afforded the tour.”

Monahan and the player directors eventually met with Al-Rumayyan for the first time in March, though there has been no clear progress on any deal — PIF as a minority investor or how to bring back the best players together more than four times a year at the majors.

Simpson, meanwhile, offered to resign from the board contingent on McIlroy replacing him. That never happened, with McIlroy saying last week "there was a subset of people on the board that were maybe uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason.”

Instead, McIlroy was added to the transaction subcommittee along with Woods; Scott; Monahan; liaison director Joe Ogilvie; Joe Gorder, the CEO of Valero Energy Corp. and chairman of PGA Tour Enterprises; and John W. Henry of Fenway Sports Group, a principal in SSG.

“It is crucial for the board to avoid letting yesterday’s differences interfere with today’s decisions, especially when they influence future opportunities for the tour,” Dunne wrote. “Unifying professional golf is paramount to restoring fan interest and repairing wounds left from a fractured game. I have tried my best to move all minds in that direction.”

According to the tour's bylaws, the four independent directors choose Dunne's replace after consulting the player directors and John Lindert, the PGA of America president who is a nonvoting board member.

Nine things to know: All about Valhalla Golf Club

Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, was built specifically to host major championships, and it has stood the test of time. Now recently polished and upgraded, the course is ready to host this year’s PGA Championship.

1. WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Its name alone invokes epic tales, and it has been the site of some. Valhalla refers to the mythological Norse hall of slain warriors who rest under the watchful eye of the warrior god Odin. A bit fanciful, perhaps. But the original ownership hired Jack Nicklaus in the 1980s to design a major-championship venue, and the venue has produced memorable theatrics during three PGA Championships (1996 – Mark Brooks; 2000 - Tiger Woods; 2014 – Rory McIlroy), two Senior PGA Championships (2004 – Hale Irwin; 2011 – Tom Watson) and the 2008 Ryder Cup (USA). Perhaps another humbled god of yore can rise again this time.

The first PGA saw Kentucky’s own Kenny Perry fall in a sudden-death playoff to Mark Brooks. Perry made a mess of the first extra hole after making the questionable decision to be interviewed in the CBS broadcast booth instead of keeping warm on the range. Perry also lost a sudden-death playoff at the 2009 Masters after making bogey on the final two holes of regulation. He never did get his major championship, but he got redemption in his home state when, at the age of 48, he was a member of the U.S. Team that won the 2008 Ryder Cup at Valhalla. That team, captained by Paul Azinger, set a template that the U.S. side has been trying to replicate since.

Valhalla’s next PGA, held just four years after Brooks’ victory, was Woods’ third consecutive major win. He became the first man since Ben Hogan in 1953 to win three majors in the same year and went on to win the following year’s Masters to complete the Tiger Slam. Woods had to hole a downhill, sliding 7-footer for birdie to force a playoff with plucky underdog Bob May, then dispatched of him in a three-hole playoff. The scene of Woods chasing down his birdie putt and pointing at the hole on the first extra hole is perhaps the most famous moment at Valhalla.

Photo Finish: This epic finishing hole bends gracefully to the right, with a large bunker to the left of the landing zone and a beautiful water feature on the right. Most players can get home in two, but will have to contend with a big bunker in front and a smaller pot bunker left. Straight Up: The tee shot must find the uphill, left-angling fairway, which means avoiding the two large bunkers, one on each side of the landing area. Then the approach must find the green, which is completely surrounded by trouble—two bunkers to the left and tightly mown turf everywhere else. (Source: PGA of America)

On The Rocks: The longest par 3 on the course, and also one of the best views of the surrounding countryside. The serene setting gets more serious around the two-tiered green, which is sandwiched between two bunkers in front and two behind. Playing from either of the two rear bunkers can be especially painful as the green slopes from back to front. (Source: PGA of America)

The Limestone Hole: Don’t let the distance deceive you: Yes, it’s the shortest two-shot hole on the course, but those two shots have to be good. A cluster of six bunkers sits just to the left of the fairway landing zone, while the green is a true island, surrounded by water and built up nearly 20 feet on large limestone boulders. Sting Like A Bee: This hole has an island fairway which is especially difficult because it doglegs to the right and then leaves an approach shot of 170-190 yards to an elevated green. Genuine Risk: The split fairway sets up a classic risk vs. reward dilemma. Driving to the left shortens the hole by more than 50 yards, but the landing area is only 26 yards wide, surrounded by bluegrass rough, and guarded by water right; the approach from this island fairway is 210-230 yards, all over water. Driving to the right is longer but safer. With water along the front and left side of the green, it’s a brave player who attacks from any angle. (Source: PGA of America)

Long Shot: The name “Long Shot” refers not to distance but one’s chance of making a par on this difficult hole. It demands an accurate tee shot, and for some players will be something less than a driver as the aim is to get as close to Floyd’s Fork as one dares. Even after a good drive, players will still be looking at over 200 yards to a challenging green complex: A deep bunker guards the left side, a closely mown collection area lurks on the right. Mine That Bird: The aggressive line on this short-ish par 4 is down the left side, carrying the large bunker at the inside of the dogleg-left’s elbow. When the tee is moved forward most players can drive the green, but this brings Floyd’s Fork into play to the left side of the green and the putting surface features significant movement and contours. Honest Abe: Named after Kentucky’s only president (Lincoln was born in Larue County, about 70 miles south of Valhalla; his family moved to Illinois when he was 7), this challenging par 3 demands an “honest” attempt. Floyd’s Fork sweeps around to the right of the green, which also is guarded by a large bunker to the right and smaller bunkers to the left and behind. But the real danger is misreading the wind, which can push a shot to the right side, which slopes down toward the hazards. (Source: PGA of America)

The Post: The challenge on this dogleg-left is not only off the tee, but also on the approach. The large front-right bunker is both visually intimidating and a real threat when the hole is cut front-left or back-right. The left bunker will catch errant shots aimed at the back of the green. Winning Colors: Another slight dogleg left, this long par 4 is lined with beautiful Kentucky hardwoods. Tee shots need to stay clear of a finger of Floyd’s Fork, a waterway that runs along the left side of the fairway and green, and continues to meander through the front nine. Also protecting the angled green are three bunkers, two front-left and one back-right. (Source: PGA of America)

McIlroy will mark something of a milestone when he returns to Valhalla this week. This was the site of his fourth – and most recent major – victory. That tournament was held in August, so we are a few months short of an exact decade, but there will no doubt be reflections on the fact that McIlroy won four majors from 2011-14 but has not won one since. He finished off his 2014 PGA Championship in the dark after storms delayed the final round. It was his second major win of the year, coming on the heels of his victory a month earlier in The Open.

2. BIG BALLPARK

This is a golf club, not a country club, and everything about it is big in scale. It’s a golf facility built for the modern game and built for hosting big events. The 485-acre property sits 20 miles east of downtown Louisville, easily accessible by highway and with plenty of local parking to accommodate the large crowds.

With 60 feet of elevation change across the entire site, Valhalla is easily walkable. There’s also plenty of room alongside the holes to provide spectators with excellent viewing and to tuck the necessary cart paths behind mounds or in the trees. The two tees of the double-sided practice area sit 350 yards apart so there’s no need to worry about netting on the practice area, either. The takeaway? There’s no shortage of space at Valhalla.

3. HAZARD-OUS MATERIAL

The corridors at Valhalla are framed by the spartan use of bunkers and the creeks that wind through the property. There are 62 bunkers on the course, and they’re almost evenly deployed between the fairways and the greens.

The fairway bunkers tend to line the sides of the landing zones, which are approximately 25 yards wide. They’re not necessarily there to define ideal lines of play or to present players with risky, but rewarding, carries. They simply constrict the landing areas and penalize those who stray from the fairway.

The greenside bunkers also help define aerial lines of play; these are perched up putting surfaces that are not designed for ground-game approaches. In this sense, the course is distinctly modern in its encouragement of aerial power.

Additional strategy is provided by two meandering streams: Floyd’s Fork on the front nine and Brush Run Creek on the back nine. Together, they influence play on seven holes should players come up short with their approaches or wander too far afield with their tee shots.

4. LONG GAME

Valhalla has been lengthened by 151 yards for this year’s PGA Championship, a 2% increase over its yardage in 2014. It will now top out at 7,609 yards and have a par of 71. Over that same decade, the average drive on the PGA TOUR has increased by 2.8%. That means the effective playing distance is marginally less than it was a decade ago, especially when considering the added length that iron shots travel. Valhalla’s added length is part of ongoing renovation by the Nicklaus design team. Recent changes were concentrated on four holes: the par-4 first and 12th holes, the par-3 14th and par-5 closing hole.

The first hole will now play approximately 50 yards longer, while 20 yards have been added to No. 12. The 14th hole can now be played as a 250-yard par-3.

5. THREE KEY HOLES

These are three holes to keep an eye on this week:

No. 4: The 372-yard par 4 normally plays as a lay-up off the tee to a tightly-bunkered fairway and then a wedge to a well-guarded green. But the PGA’s Chief Championship Officer, Kerry Haigh, has indicated that the tees will “probably” be moved up at some point, in which case many players will tempt what amounts to a 305-yard carry to the green. Making the hole drivable brings Floyd’s Fork into play left of the putting surface.

No. 6: This 495-yard par 4 will likely be the toughest hole all week. Players have to back off on a driver because the fairway ends at 295 yards, bisected by Floyd’s Fork. It’s a 340-yard carry past trees and creek to reach the other side. Modesty off the tee leaves most players with 200 yards remaining to a perched green that falls off steeply on the left. Miss the fairway off the tee and par becomes very elusive.

No. 13: This 351-yard par 4 is Valhalla’s most photographed hole, and for good reason. It plays from an elevated tee to a densely-bunkered fairway. The approach is hit to a fortress of an island green that has absolutely no support around it. You either hit the 5,662-square-foot green or you are in the water. The risk-reward ratio is extremely high, so everyone rational lays up off the tee and then tries to hit the green with a wedge. The hole has recently been excavated anew to expose its supportive limestone and adjoining waterfall. It's quite the spectacle.

6. THAT 18TH

Fitting for a course in Kentucky, the 18th hole is nicknamed “Photo Finish,” and it has provided plenty of those. Two of the three PGAs held at Valhalla have been decided in a playoff, while the other was a one-shot victory.

For this year’s PGA, the par 5 has been lengthened by 28 yards to 570. It's still within reach of most of the field, but players will need to hit the fairway to get home in two.

The oversized green is 6,534 square feet. It wraps around a mammoth “lion’s mouth” bunker that is in front of the green and divides it into three sections. The green serves as center stage, surrounded by hills that create a huge amphitheater for spectators.

Perry bogeyed the hole in 1996, then watched Brooks make a 4-footer for birdie to force a playoff. Brooks birdied it again to win on the first extra hole.

Four years later, Woods had to hole a 7-foot birdie on No. 18 to force a three-hole playoff with May. And in 2014, the PGA had one of its most memorable finishes as McIlroy asserted himself on the 18th tee, finishing in the dark to avoid having to return the next day to complete his one-stroke win.

7. NEW GRASS

Louisville occupies what turfgrass folks call the “transition zone.” That is the mid-central region of the United States, which is in between a more Northern climate that favors bentgrass and a Southern climate suited for Bermudagrass. The mid-season heat and humidity that Valhalla endures is not ideal for cool-season grasses, and that meant that the club’s original bentgrass fairways and tees were prone to wilting and required extra care.

In 2021, the club switched 30 acres of fairway and teeing grounds to Zeon Zoysia, a fine-bladed turfgrass that thrives in the local conditions and requires less water, chemicals and labor. That leads to annual savings of $250,000 in maintenance.

From a competition standpoint, the Zoysia will play firmer, faster and effectively speed up the ground game, placing more of a premium on accurate ballstriking. That shrinks the playing surface because the ball will roll more after landing. In other words, it’s a more sustainable playing surface that also requires more precise play. It’s a win-win.

8. NEW GREENS

Valhalla’s greens, which were rebuilt in 2011, are on the small side for championship golf. They average approximately 5,000 square feet, which makes them the third-smallest thus far in the PGA TOUR season. Only those at Pebble Beach (3,500 square feet) and Harbour Town (3,700) have been smaller. This also is just the third time in 2024 that the TOUR pros will face bentgrass putting surfaces, following those at Augusta National and TPC Craig Ranch recently for THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson.

Valhalla’s greens are visible from the approach area, even if not every pin placement can be seen. The course generally presents itself very well visually, a design trait of Nicklaus. With putting surfaces mowed to 1/10th of an inch, they will likely support speeds of 12-12.5 on the Stimpmeter. The breaks tend to be subtle, not swooping, and particular attention must be paid to putts inside 5-6 feet given the presence of modest contours at the cup.

9. SUPER STUFF

Valhalla’s superintendent, John Bollard, is a 25-year veteran of the turfgrass industry. He has spent the past five years at Valhalla, where he oversaw the installation of the Zeon Zoysia fairways and tees. He’s also been prepping for his first professional major through close observation of the set-ups at Southern Hills for the 2022 PGA and last year at Oak Hill. It helps having a brand-new shop and storage area, plus the support of three assistants, a total of 40 employees, and – for championship week – another 125 volunteers.

He'll have Valhalla ready for another memorable finish.

Magic: the Gathering | Esports

The Pro Tour Phyrexia Preview

Dictionary.com is always a good place to start:

Gathering —an assemblage of people; group or crowd. Other words for gathering —congregation, concourse, company, throng.

You'll have your own definition of what "gathering" means. We may not all be Avengers superheroes, but we certainly assemble. We are grouped together in draft pods and pairings, on the leaderboard, and in the Feature Match area. For some, our game engenders a fervor. Players, judges, casters, staff, and even fans travel the globe routinely. Collectively, we throng to acclaim the latest champion and the decks du jour .

The gathering means a lot. Yet for all the technological advances that have created the global village that's kept us connected for the last three years, it's still a challenge to fully represent our human senses in the virtual space.

Now, as we celebrate our season so far with Pro Tour Phyrexia, we're finally—truly—back. We can see the hesitation as a hand hovers above a creature, calculating the choice to attack or not. We can see the relief, the pride, or the puzzlement flicker across our friends' faces when they make decisions. We can hear the flick of the cards, the shuffling, and the dice rolling across the table. We can hear the myriad discussions on lines of play, the roar of triumph, and the hum of the feature match lights with the crowd watching. And we can really touch the cards in our hands, the firm handshake of our opponent, the consoling embrace of a friend, and the heft of a trophy by a champion.

This isn't just Magic —this is Magic: The Gathering.

Our Pro Tour Phyrexia showdown—taking place at MagicCon: Philadelphia February 17–19—begins with nearly 250 competitors settling in to three days of competition. First up, a true spectacle: the draft. Arranged in tables of eight, drawn at random, players will complete three packs of selections from Phyrexia: All Will Be One before whittling down their choices to a 40-card deck. Three rounds follow, with players facing only others within their draft table of eight. This "ringfence" around each draft both ensures fair play—all your possible opponents drafted from the same set of 24 packs as you did—and has the human dynamic of knowing that every good card you didn't take could be used against you.

By late lunchtime, 30 or so players will still have a perfect record at 3–0, 90 or so more will be at 2–1, with another 90ish at 1–2, and the final 30 odd players will still be looking to find their first win at 0–3. That's assuming no draws, of course.

Ah yes— draws . When a round ends, matches still being played have five additional turns to complete the match. If they can't, and the scores are level, it's a draw. Nobody claims the three match points for victory, but both get a single point for avoiding defeat. (Spoiler: draws are generally bad news for your overall chances.)

Whatever their Draft record, the players will spend Rounds 4 through 8 on Friday playing Pioneer, the Constructed format for the whole weekend. If creatures light your fire, watch out for all-the-way-from- Alpha Llanowar Elves ; the fairy-tale standouts Bonecrusher Giant and Lovestruck Beast ; the compleatly perfect Sheoldred, the Apocalypse ; and the unearthly Cityscape Leveler .

In the spell slots, you'll find efficiency everywhere you look, whether that's countering spells with Mystical Dispute , starting a game with discard and Thoughtseize , recounting a saga with Fable of the Mirror-Breaker , or punishing opponents for whatever deck choice they made ( Rest in Peace , Damping Sphere , Abrade , and so many more).

And this is Pioneer, so don't forget about the lands. You'll find a ton of nonbasic lands at the top tables, including Boseiju, Who Endures ; Otawara, Soaring City ; and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx . With a format as large as Pioneer, nonbasic lands go deep—all the world really is a Thespian's Stage .

As Round 8 closes, 12 match points (or a 4–4 record or better) is needed to advance to Day Two. Little more than half the field will make it back. For those that don't, it's not all bad. They're still in Philadelphia—a fabulous east coast city—and they're still in a building that has amazing Magic opportunities at the rest of the MagicCon. You still want to reach Day Two, but there are some nice consolations if things don't go according to plan.

Saturday? That looks a lot like Friday, with Rounds 9–11 being Phyrexia: All Will Be One Draft, and then Rounds 12–16 returning to Pioneer—and yes, you keep the same deck you registered at the start of the tournament. For a very select few, playing all eight rounds on Saturday won't be necessary. Once you reach twelve match wins (that's 36 match points), you're a lock for Sunday's Top 8 and receive byes for your remaining matches on Saturday.

In theory, our Top 8 slots are open for business from Round 12 onwards. In reality, it's a monumental achievement to book your place early. Expect at least five of the Top 8 to book their appearance in the last round of the day.

That brings us to Sunday. Pioneer is the format once again, with a straight knockout bracket of quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals. Each round is best three out of five games, with sideboarding happening once the first two games have been completed. Nine hours or so of knockout slugfests will bring us to a champion. But who might that champion be?

Nathan Steuer, Magic World Champion

The obvious place to start is with winners, and there's literally no bigger winner than Nathan Steuer, reigning World Champion. His astonishing victory in Las Vegas last year showcased the beauty of in-person, high-level Magic. Literally (and remember, I use Dictionary.com, so when I say literally, I mean, like, literally literally) we saw tears of despair and of joy from Steuer, a player who embodies the journey, having been in the public gaze since eye-catching Grand Prix performances as a preteen, working his way up through the ranks to the highest point.

Next in line are the group of eleven regional champions. They began the journey just like you can at a WPN game store , reaching the Regional Championship via a Regional Championship Qualifier (RCQ). Can they do so again at the next level? They may not be household Magic names, but this weekend could go a long way to changing that for some of these:

If you want to root for people who are already household names, there are plenty. From last season, we have championship winners in Eli Kassis and Yuuki Ichikawa. Alongside Steuer are recent World Champions Yuta Takahashi and Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa. The Brazilian is in the Magic: The Gathering Hall of Fame, and you'll see more of his fellow Hall of Famers in action, including Reid Duke, Shota Yasooka, Gabriel Nassif, and Luis Scott-Vargas.

Whether it's a new regional champion, a Hall of Famer, or a Pro Tour first-timer taking it all down on Sunday, you'll be able to see it all unfold with our caster gang across the three days. Eilidh Lonie and Corey Baumeister will share the caster booth with Marshall Sutcliffe and Paul Cheon, while the newsdesk crew features Maria Bartholdi, Mani Davoudi, and Cedric Phillips, who will be out and about getting all the up-to-the-minute stories direct from our players.

Over the last three years, it's been noted that Magic is "the gathering" but now you can see it all, hear it all, feel it all—with us all gathered again.

Watch all the Pro Tour Phyrexia action right here (on Magic.gg) and twitch.tv/magic , beginning at 11 a.m. ET on February 17 and 18, and 9 a.m. ET for the Top 8 playoff on February 19. We'll see you at Philadelphia!

Rory McIlroy Trails Xander Schauffele by One Shot at Wells Fargo

Bob harig | may 11, 2024.

McIlroy was the only golfer to record a bogey-free round Saturday.

The headlines are a sign of the times, the type that Rory McIlroy would prefer not to be making but are part of golf’s volatile times.

Now he’s in position to make news for what he does inside the ropes.

McIlroy shot a bogey-free 67 on Saturday at Quail Hollow Golf Club to cut into the lead of Xander Schauffele, whose 70 kept him one shot out in front at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Sungjae Im is four shots back followed by Stepp Straka.

Barring something unusual, it appears that all eyes will be on the final twosome of Schauffele and McIlroy—as they were on Saturday.

“I’m going to have to earn it tomorrow,’’ Schauffele said. “I’ve got Rory breathing down my neck.’’

McIlroy’s been a big part of the story this week at Quail Hollow off the course. He first disclosed that he will not be going back on the PGA Tour Policy Board; then a day later, he said he’d be part of a sub-committee that includes Tiger Woods and Adam Scott that will negotiate directly with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia in hopes of working out a deal.

All of that has seemingly not been a distraction so far.

Schauffele saw firsthand how daunting it can be to play with McIlroy when he is booming his drives. He was routinely 20 to 30 yards behind McIlroy off the tee and having a few of his own issues. McIlroy hit 11 of 14 fairways and averaged 325 yards off the tee for all holes.

Among one of the game’s elite players, Schauffele, 30, is fourth in the Official World Golf Rankings and it is a testament to his consistency that he is that high after not having won since July of 2022.

Schauffele’s last victory came at the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open. Since that time, he has 19 top-10 finishes (he did tie for the low 72-hole score at last year’s Tour Championship) without a victory.

Xander Schauffele plays his shot from the 15th tee at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship

Earlier this year, he transitioned away from his father, Stefan, as his coach and began working with Chris Como. Sometimes that can mean a regression, but Schauffele has managed to post several good results. He tied for second at the Players Championship and also was eighth at the Masters.

“I've been with my dad forever,’’ Schauffele said. “So having a new coach, Chris, has been awesome. I'm not playing worse, which is nice. He's definitely helped me a lot. There are some things in transition that aren't super comfortable. So I'm happy with how things are going, and been pretty patient through the process. He's been awesome in communicating with me even when he's not out here. So just trying to get more and more comfortable where the club's at and how I'm swinging it.’’

McIlroy has found something, too. His visit with Butch Harmon prior to the Masters helped him shore up some things with his iron play. And he’s been hitting the driver quite well starting a few weeks ago in New Orleans, where he combined with Shane Lowry to win the Zurich Classic, his 25th PGA Tour win.

But McIlroy’s last lone victory came back in January in Dubai, and it’s mostly been a year of mediocre finishes. A win Sunday and a fourth at Quail Hollow would be a nice boost heading to next week’s PGA Championship.

Ten years ago, McIlroy won the week prior to winning at Valhalla Golf Club for his fourth major title.

McIlroy matched Straka for the low round of the day and has gone two days without making a bogey.

“I think I've held out pretty well for the most part inside six feet, and then I think because I know this golf course so well, I've missed it in the right spots when I have missed the green,’’ McIlroy said. “To play two rounds in a row on this golf course in these conditions bogey free is a bit of a feather in my cap, I'm pretty proud of that.’’
