If you aren’t familiar with Travel Fox then grab a seat. Established in 1985 in the Marche region of Monte San Guesto Italy, Travel Fox would go on to carve out their own lane in the highly competitive world of footwear during the 80’s and through the mid 90’s. The company was known for shoes that featured high quality materials such as Italian Napa leather, solid comfort and silhouette’s that stood out among the feet of youth in cities around the world.

They were expensive, finely crafted and of course sported as a status symbol. Like most brands, marketing also played a key role in the success of Travel fox. Their racy advertising during a much more conservative time period stood out among other footwear brands but was immediately banned because of the suggestive nature of the images. In their prime, the company boasted 80 million dollars in sales annually but would eventually fizzle out among legal issues. Fast forward to 2016 and Travel Fox is back in the American market for the first time in nearly 2 decades. DeFY. New York recently caught up with Shawn McIntyre of Vissinternational to talk about the past, present and of course the future of Travel Fox.

DeFY: Lets go back to the beginning. Where did the name Travel Fox come from?

Shawn: The name Travel Fox originated as a combination between Taiwanese manufacturers Hongson international and and their designer counterparts in Monte San Guesto Italy : Travel representing leisure, comfort , soft . Fox:sexy, smart, style.

DeFY: Who were the original owners? Are they involved today?

Shawn: The Owners /manufactures were and still are Taiwanese manufacturing giant Hongson International who incorporated the fine art of Italian design and craftsmanship to produce casual footwear (the art of casualism) that has been a fashion forward icon from its inception. I

DeFY: Lets talk marketing. Travel fox had what a lot of people considered as very racy ads that were supposedly banned. Where did the company advertise?

Shawn: TravelFox advertised in Playboy magazine, Rolling Stone and GQ magazine and even Time Square. There were also some commercials.

The marketing was viewed as so ahead of its time that it won the highest awards in marketing (Clio awards) but was immediately banned because of the suggestive nature of the images. It sparked controversy in an era that was highly conservative in comparison to today .

DeFY: At one point TravelFox was doing an average of 80 Million dollars in sales annually but would eventually go out of business. What happened?

Shawn: That’s correct, TravelFox was doing average of 80million annually in the US market way ahead of any of the bigger brands today with their head office situated in the Rockefeller tower. The brand eventually became embroiled in a huge legal battle with another major brand over a logo infringement involving one of the labels carried at that time by Hongson International .To this effect TravelFox’s retraction from the market was eminent .Under Hongson TravelFox would rest dormant for the next 18 years, their manufacturing relegated to 50 brand name stores in Taiwan while continuing to acquire other major labels to become a manufacturing/owner powerhouse in Asia .

DeFY: Ok, so lets talk the return. Over the past several years I can’t tell you how many people have reached out to me personally about where they can purchase Travel Fox footwear and or what happened to the company. What can old and new fans alike expect moving forward?

Shawn: In 2015 with Vissinternational as the official North American distributors we celebrate and reintroduce to the market the TravelFox 30th anniversary line .

We’ve been prepping the market since 2014 with availability in selected sneaker stores in New York ,Miami, Africa and the Caribbean in which we introduced a clean version of our flagship model 900 classic series.

Just been thinking about the rave scene in the early 90s and I remember a lot of people wearing Trailblazers in a variety of colours. I had a couple of pairs myself. (Maybe it was just a Northern thing)

I've just found out they re-released them a few years ago to celebrate their 15th birthday and I missed them. (original deadstock from the 90s would be better but I doubt anyone kept a pair boxed) I wouldn't mind getting hold of a set for display purposes, obviously.

Done the usual Google search which didn't come up with a great deal. Any ideas on where to track down such a thing? (Bez's wardrobe, maybe? Next to the Class A 😆 )

Anyone remember those old school Travel Fox trainers circa 1994/5? They were a great alternative to the Puma Suedes/States and Adidas Gazelles that a lot of people were wearing. Fat laces were de rigeur.

Civil rights complaint filed against Cobb County Schools over book removal

COBB COUNTY, Ga. - The Cobb County School District is the target of a complaint filed with the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights over the removal of multiple books from school libraries.

The complaint was filed Monday by The National Women's Law Center against the Cobb County and another school district in Florida, the Marietta Daily Journal reported .  

The complaint comes less than a month after Cobb County School Superintendent Chris Ragsdale announced the district would remove four books from its media centers.

"It Ends with Us," "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," "Lucky," and "Thirteen Reasons Why" were all identified by the district as having lewd, vulgar, graphic, or sexually explicit content.

The titles join three other books banned by the district in 2023 -- "Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl," "Flamed," and "Blankets." Cobb Schools had previously said they planned to remove 25 books from libraries.

"I have made a distinct statement saying that protecting children from age-inappropriate and graphic explicit sexual material is a battle between good and evil," Ragsdale said at the meeting where he made the announcement.

The National Women's Law Center claims that Cobb County has targeted books that deal with race or are written by LGBTQ+ authors.

"Both public schools are systemically marginalizing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) students in violation of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX) and students of color in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VI)," the complaint reads. "The discriminatory efforts to censor these books and learning materials have harmed students by creating and fostering a hostile environment in which they feel unsafe to be who they are at school, feel unsupported or in their identities, and cannot see themselves reflected in what they learn at school."

Cobb County Schools Superintendent Chris Ragsdale talks to FOX 5 about the books that the school district has decided to pull from their schools. The superintendent says it is not a "book ban" and parents can still buy the books or get the books from the library for their children.

Cobb County defends removing books from schools

District leaders have not commented publicly about the lawsuit, but Ragsdale had argued against critics calling the decision to remove the books from school libraries a "book ban," pointing to the books' continued availability in stores, homes, and public libraries unaffiliated with the school as evidence.

"So many people are erroneously presenting this as book banning. Again, that is erroneous and could not be further from the truth. We are not banning books no more than we are banning rated R or NC17 movies," he said.

He also defended the removal of the seven books, saying that the material found in their pages "has no place in any school or in the hands of any child."

Ragsdale told FOX 5 the district will continue to review the many books in its media centers and remove any deemed inappropriate due to lewd, graphic, vulgar, or sexually explicit content.

The Cobb County School District is under a separate investigation by the DOE's Office of Civil Rights for what a district spokesperson told ABC News was a complaint about an "anti-Muslim incident."

Asking a parent to wait in a situation that affects their child can be easier said than done, but Kailey Hanak and her husband, Brian Spencer, have become pros at waiting over the last two weeks.

The couple have spent each day since May 3 in the hospital as their 15-year-old son, Kasen Spencer, recovers from serious trauma. Police say he was shot in the head while with a group of other teens in a recreational vehicle.

“He was shot in the back of the head, so the bullet stopped in his brain,” Spencer said. “He still has fragments in his brain.”

Kasen’s parents said they are thankful he’s still alive. He has been in and out of sedation at Salt Lake City Primary Children’s Hospital for the last week.

“From the day I had him, that kid has been here to teach me patience, so he’s just teaching me even more now to be patient than before,” Hanak said.

Spencer said he remembers watching his son leave the night he was shot to hang out with friends. Now, all he wants is to see the 15-year-old walk back through their door.

“We miss his smile, his laugh, especially his laugh. He had an amazing and contagious laugh. Even, you know, being a smart a--. We miss all of those things,” Spencer said.

Over the weekend, the family welcomed positive news. Kasen came off his ventilator, moved out of the intensive care unit and is hearing, seeing and talking.

“Hopeful little signs is all we need,” Hanak said.

But understanding the full extent of the teen’s injuries will require more waiting. His parents say he had dreams of being a mixed martial arts fighter or joining the Marine Corps, like his father, but those dreams are now uncertain.

“He’s a strong kid, and I know that whatever is handed or happens or whatever it is, he’ll be amazing at it, just like he is everything else,” Hanak said.

Police are still investigating where the gun came from and who fired it. They haven’t made any arrests yet but say investigators are close to a resolution in the case.

In the meantime, Kasen’s aunt created a GoFundMe to support the family financially while her nephew recovers.
