All about Vietnamese Pagodas

Pagodas, known as “Chua” in Vietnam, are Buddhist places of worship. Unlike temples, pagodas are not strictly for Buddhists; however, anyone is welcome inside.

When visiting a pagoda, be mindful to respect the culture . As a traveler, walking into the pagoda on the right and exit on the left is highly recommended. Also, you should take off your shoes if required. Additionally, dress conservatively. No hats, bare shoulders, or shorts are allowed.

Don’t point at the altars or statues. Be respectful of locals who are praying. Finally, always ask before taking photos.

The best time to see a pagoda is in the morning before they are busy. Seeing a pagoda at night is also well worth it, but some are closed in the evening. An illuminated pagoda is a sight worth seeing!

The legend says that the Holy Lady sat on a lotus and told King Ly to develop a similar establishment. How are Pagodas and Temples in Vietnam Different?

  • Discover the culture of Vietnam in a 10-day tour
  • Cultural quintessence of Southern Vietnam in 9 Days

It is not easy to know whether such a monument is a temple or a pagoda, especially for travelers discovering Asia for the first time! The distinction between pagodas and temples is very complex due to the architectural similarities between these two types of religious monuments.

The Vietnamese temple is a building that makes it possible to venerate and pay homage to a God, a goddess, and/or an important historical figure, such as the saint of a community. The pagoda, on the other hand, is a place of worship dedicated to the Buddhas and highlights all the principles of Buddhism. If the Vietnamese temple is most often a place of worship, the Vietnamese pagoda is, moreover, the place of residence of the monks, who are neither more nor less, Buddhist monks.

Now check out our list of the best temples and pagodas you must visit on your trip to Vietnam.

Bai Dinh Pagoda, Ninh Binh Province, is an enormous pagoda and sprawling temple complex in northern Vietnam.

Made up of the original old temple and multiple newer temple buildings, the whole complex covers around 700 hectares of hillside close to the small city of Ninh Binh.

Bai Dinh Pagoda is Vietnam’s largest Buddhist temple. Over the years, the site has attracted crowds of pilgrims who go there to pray in the scenic surroundings.

Work on the newer part of the temple started back in 2003, with the temple structure finally completed in 2010.

The temple’s location, perched up on a leafy hillside, means that visitors can enjoy views of the surrounding area from many viewpoints.

Bai Dinh Pagoda rises impressively to a height of 100 metres and offers the chance to glimpse incredible panoramic views.

Best Time to Visit Bai Dinh Pagoda

Bai Dinh Pagoda is open for visitors all year round. The best time to visit is from January to March. This is when the weather is warm, and the surrounding hills come alive with nature.

However, this is also the time when many local Vietnamese people visit the temple and although it’s a nice time of year to see the pagoda, it also means that you’ll be visiting during the peak of the tourist season.

I would also recommend visiting early in the day. This is a good idea as you’ll miss the crowds arriving on tour buses later in the day, and you’ll also avoid the hottest part of the day if you’re visiting in the warmer months.

The main hall, known as the Tam The Hall, is a sizeable building with a roof that is almost 60 metres long.

Built from stone and timber sourced from the local area, the design is classically Vietnamese with curving eaves that resemble the tail of a phoenix.

Local artisans from nearby villages have decorated the interior with lacquerware, bronze statues, and stone carvings.

Is Visiting Bai Dinh Pagoda Worth It?

Taking a trip to Bai Dinh temple in Ninh Binh is totally worth it! Although the pagoda itself may not be the most amazing one you’ve ever seen, overall, the collection of temples is actually really impressive.

The whole temple complex is one of the biggest and most important Buddhist temples in Asia, let alone Vietnam, so I would say it’s definitely worth a visit.

Plus, once in Ninh Binh you will probably also visit other beautiful sights like Hang Mua Viewpoint , Bich Dong Pagoda , and go on a boat trip in Tam Coc or Trang An.

This combination of activities makes Ninh Binh a must-see stop on any Vietnam itinerary.

Where to stay to visit Bai Dinh Pagoda

Bai Dinh Pagoda isn’t as close to Tam Coc or Trang An as some of the other attractions, but I would still stick to one of these two towns when deciding where to stay.

This is because they’re the most touristy towns, with the most restaurants, bars and services. Here are some of the best places to stay in both towns for every budget.

Budget: Trang An Lamia Bungalow – If you’re looking for an affordable and unique stay, these bamboo bungalows are the perfect place for you!

Mid-range: Green Mountain Homestay – This is where we stayed and I can honestly say it’s a great place to stay in Ninh Binh. Affordable, nestled amongst the mountains and rice fields, with a pool and friendly staff.

Luxury: Mua Caves Ecolodge – This ecolodge has a pool, bungalows with a view and offers a delicious breakfast buffet. Plus, you can visit Mua Caves viewpoint early in the morning before the crowds arrive!

It might not be as Instagrammable as Halong Bay or Sapa , but Bai Dinh is a beautiful Buddhist temple complex, with stunning architecture and views.

It is believed that the original temple of Perfume Pagoda Complex was a small structure located on the current position of Thien Tru Pagoda. And it was built in the 15th century, during the reign of King Le Thanh Tong. However, legend declared that this site was found out over 2000 years ago by a meditating Buddhist monk. Then he used the name of a Tibetan mountain where Lord Buddha practiced asceticism, to call the site.

The building of a terrace, stone steps was dated back 1686 in a stele at the current temples, during the reign of King Le Hy Tong. The current bronze statues of Lord Buddha and Quan Am was put in place in 1793, whereas the original ones dating back to 1767 were damaged through ups and downs of time and history. Suffering from the French and the American wars, Thien Tru Pagoda’s gate and bell tower were destroyed. Therefore, the renovation of bell tower was made in 1986 and the gate reconstruction was completed in 1994.

  • Huong Tich Grotto.

Huong Tich Grotto (Grotto of Fragrant Traces) is regarded as the major reason for pilgrimages coming to Perfume Pagoda Complex because it’s home to Perfume Pagoda, or also known as “The Inner Pagoda”. The huge entrance of the grotto as well as the pagoda astonishes tourists because it looks like an open mouth of dragon. Being carved to the wall at the grotto’s mouth are ancient Vietnamese letters: “Nam Thiên Đệ Nhất Động”, which dated back to 1770. This inscription can roughly be translated as “The Foremost Grotto of the Southern World”. “Southern World” refers to the nation of Vietnam because it’s located geographically in the south of China. Entering the Inner Pagoda inside the grotto, tourists will be surprised by many statues of Buddha, Avalokitesvara, and other Buddhist deities, which were carved from green stones. The most impressive statue here is Statue of the Buddhist Goddess Quan Am. Quan Am’s “left leg is stretched out and the foot lies on a lotus flower, her right leg is bent and is supported by a lotus flower with supple leaves; a hand holds a pearl.”

In addition, there are many natural stalactites and stalagmites inside the grotto. Over many years, some of them have become smooth because people believe that if they touch and rub these things, miracles and good luck will come to their life.

The uphill trip takes an hour climbing to thousand stone steps of high slope, which requires very good physical conditions from climbers. Sometimes there are some slippery stone steps so tourists must be careful and wear comfortable walking shoes or sandals. However, it’s quite a memorable experience with breathtaking scenery along the way. You can feel incredible green trees towering all around you and sometimes catch the moment of local farmers’ daily life.

Whereas, the trip by cable car lasts only 10 – 15 minutes to reach the grotto’s entrance gate. Sitting on the cabinet, you can admire the romantic beauty of the below landscapes with mountains, forests and temples dotting along the way.

Thien Mu Pagoda in Hue

Thien Mu Pagoda in Hue

Travel Guide to Heaven Fairy Lady Pagoda

Rachel Tran

There’s a religious site in Hue, Vietnam that lures tourists by its beautiful and ancient architectural structures of worship, Thien Mu pagoda in the ancient Hue city.

Where is Thien Mu Pagoda Located?

Thien Mu Pagoda (namely Heaven Fairy Lady Pagoda), also known as Linh Mu Pagoda, is one of the most fascinating and ancient pagoda in Hue city. It is situated on Ha Khe hill, on the north bank of the Perfume River , in Huong Long village, 5 kilometers from Hue city, which is easy to reach from the city center.

The name of the pagoda derives from a special legend. Long time ago, an old woman appeared on the hill where the pagoda stands today, telling local people that a Lord would come and build a Buddhist pagoda for the country’s prosperity. Lord Nguyen Hoang therefore ordered the construction of the pagoda the “Heaven Fairy Lady” or Thiên Mụ in Vietnamese (also called Linh Mụ). Thanks to such a mysterious history, the pagoda has attracted a great number of tourists from both inside and outside of the nation to come and explore the legend themselves.

Highlights of Thien Mu Pagoda

1. Formation and Growth

The beautiful pagoda was built in 1601. Later on, several kings of the Nguyen Dynasty such as Gia Long, Minh Mang, Thieu Tri and Thanh Thai, all had the pagoda restored. At this very initial time, Hoang was the governor of the province of Thuan Hoa (now known as Hue), yet, started ruling his independent state in central Vietnam. According to the royal annals, Hoang was on a sightseeing trip and holiday to contemplate the seas and mountains of the local area when he passed by the hill, which is now the site of the Thien Mu Pagoda. On hearing the mentioned local legend, he had the pagoda constructed. The initial temple was in a very simple form of construction, but as time went by, it has been redeveloped and expanded with more intricate features.

2. A Special Architectural Site

The most striking feature of the pagoda, Phuoc Duyen tower (initially called Tu Nhan tower), was erected in 1884 by King Thieu Tri, and has become the unofficial symbol of Hue. This octagonal tower has seven storeys (2m high), which is dedicated to a Buddha who appeared in human form. It is the highest stupa in Vietnam, and is often the subject of folk rhymes and cadao about Hue, such is its iconic status and association with the city. More importantly, it is regarded as the unofficial symbol of the former imperial capital.

To the left of the tower is a pavilion sheltering an enormous bell. The bell, called Dai Hong Chung, was cast in 1710 by Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu. It is famous for the great size, which is 2.5m high and 3,285 kg weigh. It is considered to be an outstanding achievement of 18 th  century bronze casting.

To the right of the tower is a pavillion containing a stela dated from 1715. It is set on the back of a massive marble turtle, a symbol of longevity, and is 2.58 m high.

Besides, there are several popular works of art inside the pagoda, which are of great captivation to tourists. For instance, Dai Hung shrine, the main-hall, which presents a magnificent architecture. As bronze cast statues, it shelters some precious antiques: the bronze gong cast in 1677, the wooden gilded board with Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu’s inscriptions (1714).

Historical Role of Thien Mu pagoda

3. Historical Role of Thien Mu Pagoda

Besides the architectural value, Thien Mu pagoda features a great historical role, which is also of absorption to visitors. During the summer of 1963, Thien Mu Pagoda, like many in South Vietnam, became a hotbed of anti-government protest. South Vietnam’s Buddhist majority had long been discontented with the rule of President Ngo Dinh Diem since his rise to power in 1955. Diem had shown strong favouritism towards Catholics and discrimination against Buddhists in the army, public service and distribution of government aid. Discontent with Diem exploded into mass protest in Hue during the summer of 1963 when nine Buddhists died at the hand of Diem’s army and police on Vesak, the birthday of Gautama Buddha. Accordingly, Buddhist protests were held across the country and steadily grew in size. In those historical days, Thien Mu Pagoda was a major organising point for the Buddhist movement and was often the location of hunger strikes, barricades and protests.

Today, the pagoda is surrounded by flowers and ornamental plants. At the far end of the garden stretches a calm and romantic pine-tree forest. It is much well-maintained and very welcoming to all visitors.

Note:  Thien Mu Pagoda can be reached either by car or by boat.

Located on the bank of the poetic Perfume River together with its typical traditional architecture of Hue pagodas, Thien Mu Pagoda has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Hue City. It is recommended that visitors going on a city tour around Hue visiting this pagoda in the afternoon so they can observe the monks’ praying time inside the pagoda as well as enjoy the beautiful sunset on the Perfume river.
