Carnival Freedom Itineraries

Carnival freedom review, review of carnival freedom.

The 2007-built Carnival Freedom cruise ship is the 5th/last of Carnival's Conquest-class liners, with sisterships Conquest , Glory , Valor , Liberty .

The vessel (IMO number 9333149) is currently Panama- flagged (MMSI 371154000) and registered in Colon .

History - construction and ownership

Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) is a US shipping company, trademarked brand and subsidiary of Carnival Corporation (shipowner). CCL was founded in 1972 as an independent company by Ted Arison (1924-1999, co-founder of NCL Norwegian ).

CCL has the Corporation's largest fleet as number of vessels and GT-tonnage (ship sizes/volumes and passenger capacities). In 2023, CCL had ~9% (by revenue) and ~19% (passengers) share of the cruise industry's worldwide market. In 2024, the parent company (Carnival Corporation) had ~51% stake in the US$64+ billion industry.

Carnival Freedom cruise ship

The 3000-passenger ship Carnival Freedom was refurbished in 2014 for USD 70 million. Vessel's main architecture is a standard sandwich with most public rooms on Decks three through five; most fitness, spa and casual dining rooms on Deck 9 and above; and most cruisers cabins in among or below the public room decks. This main design has been a pattern for CCL newbuild construction since the introduction of Carnival Destiny in 1996.

There have been made few changes and enhancements in attributes and conveniences since the class was pushed in 2002, most especially, the addition of Seaside Theater (huge outdoor screen above swimming pool on Lido Deck). However, the Carnival ship Freedom suffers from the same cruisers-flow bugaboos as do the other vessels in this class. It is impossible to get from the Posh Dining Room (aft end of the liner) to the Victoriana Lounge (basic showroom) all the way forward without having to climb or descend 1 or 2 decks. And even then, one has to pass either go through the other dining room or the cigar bar.

Decks and Cabins

Carnival Freedom staterooms (1492 total, in 27 grades) include 52 Suites, 504 Balcony, 330 Oceanview and 587 Inside cabins, including 29 wheelchair-accessible (in all cabin categories). The ship has no "family cabins" but instead offers connecting rooms in various categories. Most cabins are sized 170-185 ft2 (16-17 m2). Cabin balconies are sized 35-75 ft2 (3-7 m2). The ship has 3 types of suites - Captain's, Grand, Ocean. The largest are Captain's Suites (500 ft2 / 46 m2 plus 150 ft2 / 14 m2 terrace).

The boat has 13 passenger decks , of which 8 are with cabins. Over 50% of all staterooms are outside, 60% of those are with balconies.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Two formal restaurants onboard Carnival Freedom serve open seating breakfast and lunch. Dinner is served in an open seating option or two assigned seatings. The casual Lido buffet offers a number of food stations with a variety of choices, including a salad bar, deli, dessert station, daily regional cuisines. The ship also boasts an upscale supper club which assesses a cover charge and requires reservations. You'll also find outdoor poolside grills, specialty coffee bar, complimentary sushi bar, pizzeria and 24-hour room service that provides a limited selection of items.

Carnival Freedom cruise ship

Onboard dining has remained mainly free of charge onboard Carnival Freedom. Apart from the main dining room and the buffet, there are burritos and burgers with enough toppings to experience something different every day of your voyage. Even the buffet themed counters seem like tiny, specialized eateries.

Follows the complete list of Carnival Freedom restaurants and food bars.

  • Chic Restaurant (744-seat forward Dining Room, with two fixed dinner seatings and “Your Time Dining”; offers “Seuss At Sea” themed breakfast for $5)

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Carnival Freedom boasts 22 bars and lounges, giant disco, as well as a piano bar, sports bar, wood-paneled lounge with leather chairs and smoking section. The three-level theater is the special venue for Vegas-style productions accompanied by live orchestras.

Carnival Freedom cruise ship

Freedom is the first Carnival ship with Camp Ocean, which replaced Camp Carnival as children's program. Carnival Freedom is also the first ship to feature Bookville, a play space and reading room that anchors Seuss at Sea onboard experience. She's also the first ship to boast 4 full PlayList Productions shows at 30 minutes each, rotating throughout the cruise. A number of other Carnival branded experiences enhance onboard life. EA Sports Bar offers action on every wall with video games, sports games, and sports memorabilia. "Hasbro, the Game Show" plays the board games everyone knows out on the stage together with members of the audience. Itineraries

Carnival Freedom itinerary program is based on departures from Galveston TX with 7-day roundtrip cruises to Eastern and Western Caribbean. Feature port destinations include Nassau , Key West , Cozumel , Belize , Roatan .

Starting April 27, 2021, Carnival Freedom had planned cruises in Alaska leaving on roundtrips from homeport Seattle WA . The 7-day "Glacier Route" itinerary visits Skagway , Juneau , Ketchikan , Victoria (BC Canada) , Tracy Arm Fjord (scenic cruising). The ship also had an 8-day itinerary to Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point/Hoonah , Victoria BC, Tracy Arm Fjord. Freedom's Seattle departures were on Tuesdays.

In 2021, in Alaska Carnival Freedom had to join Carnival Miracle (10-11-day roundtrips from San Francisco ). After Alaska, Freedom was to be relocated from Seattle to homeport Fort Lauderdale Florida with a 17-day Panama Canal itinerary (September 22, 2021) for 6- and 8-day Eastern and Southern Caribbean roundtrips. However, due to the Coronavirus crisis and Canada's extended (through 2022) ban on cruise ships, CCL's entire Alaska 2021 program was canceled and CCL's Freedom ship restartded operations on October 9, 2021, out of Miami .

In 2023, to Carnival Freedom's schedule were added two Transatlantic crossings (RepositionCruises.com) between Florida USA and Europe. The special voyages were due to the drydock (in Cadiz Spain ) scheduled for 2023 October (4-23). The first/eastbound Transatlantic voyage (Sept 21-Oct 4) is a 13-night itinerary from Port Canaveral to Barcelona . The second/westbound Transatlantic voyage (Oct 23-Nov 6) is a 14-night reverse itinerary from Barcelona to Port Canaveral.

Carnival Freedom Wiki

Fun Ship 2.0 upgrade was done in 2014. Freedom is the first Carnival ship with a reservations-only/specialty restaurant (Sun King Steakhouse) and the adults-only "Serenity" (resort deck area). Freedom is also Carnival's last Conquest-class liner ( Fincantieri Monfalcone -built), with sisterships Conquest , Glory , Liberty , Valor . The inaugural cruise (maiden voyage) started on March 5, 2007 (Mediterranean itinerary from Civitavecchia-Rome ).

Carnival Freedom refurbishments review

Carnival Freedom's drydock refurbishment in 2024 (March 26-April 4) was at Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport (Bahamas) . The project was for routine maintenance, technical overhauls, classification works/safety inspections, and some steelworks (including on the funnel that was shorted).

Drydocking 2023 (October 6-21) was conducted at Navantia shipyard in Cadiz Spain . The drydocking project included the replacement of the funnel, superstructure and hull cleaning/repainting, exterior refurbishments (new decking installation, adding CCL's new red-white-blue hull livery), adding the Heroes Tribute Bar (deck 5), Dreams Studio (deck 3). The Casino was expanded, and all staterooms and public areas were renovated/upgraded. Curiously, the funnel was designed and manufactured by Navantia.

The ship's 2019 drydock refit and refurbishment (February 14 - March 8) was done at Grand Bahama Shipyard (Freeport) and resulted in the following deckplan changes:

WaterWorks Aqua Park (Deck 10) replaced the Stressless Pool area (with a waterslide). The new aquapark features a 62-m / 203-ft long AquaTunnel (waterslide), Carnival's signature 65-m / 212-ft long Twister slide, a 75-gallon / 285-liter PowerDrencher (tipping bucket) and the kids-only SplashZone.

Bonsai Sushi Express (Deck 9 starboard) is a new outdoor food bar offering a variety of rolls, sushi, sashimi.

The Deli (Deck 9 portside / outdoor food bar) now offers an expanded menu with sandwiches, traditional side dishes, paninis.

The 9-hole Mini-Golf Course was relocated from Deck 12 to Deck 11.

Retail shopping areas (Promenade Deck 5) were expanded and redesigned (as mall-style space) with outlets selling watches, perfumes, jewelry, Carnival-branded merchandise (including at the new Carnival Adventures Shop / next to the Internet Cafe / midship-starboard).

The ship was also drydocked in 2021 (January-February) for routine maintenance and classification works.

Port Canaveral Directions

port canaveral cruise terminal carnival freedom

If you're planning to drive to Port Canaveral from points north and south, take I-95 to North Atlantic Avenue in Cape Canaveral, and turn left onto North Atlantic Avenue. If you're coming from points east, such as Orlando, take State Road 528 to Port Canaveral, then use Exit 54A for A Terminals or Exit 54B for B Terminals.

Port Canaveral Parking

There's ample parking outside of each terminal, mainly in covered parking garages that are easily accessible from the terminal.

Parking rates are flat fees and can only be paid by credit card. No cash is accepted onsite.

Each terminal has dedicated accessibility parking. The parking fee is waived for vehicles with special equipment, such as wheelchair ramps and lifts, or to those with Florida exemption permits. Oversize parking for RVs is also available at each terminal.

Getting from the Orlando International Airport to Port Canaveral

Airline terminal (Photo: Dabarti CGI/Shutterstock.com)

Orlando International Airport (MCO) is approximately 45 minutes west of Port Canaveral cruise terminals. Port Canaveral and the nearby area have outlets for major car rental companies, all serviced by shuttles to the port terminals.

If you're flying into Orlando with time to spare, a nice option is to rent a car there, use it to explore the area around the Cape then return it at the port before your cruise.

Public Transit from the Orlando International Airport to Port Canaveral

Mass transit options are limited. The closest Amtrak train stations are in Sanford and Orlando , and the closest Greyhound terminal is in Titusville , which is a 25-minute drive from the port. From any of these, you'll need to take a taxi, as the port is not serviced by local public transportation.

More practically, cruise lines offer direct airport to cruise terminal shuttles for those who pre-book the service. Contact your cruise line to make arrangements. Some area hotels also offer cruise terminal shuttle service.

Orlando International Airport Taxi Service to Port Canaveral

Metered taxi service and rideshare services are readily available at MCO. Passengers are picked up on the second level on the arrivals curb.

Restaurants Near Port Canaveral (Plus Shopping and Other Services)

There are limited services on the Port Canaveral property, but a few chain eateries may be found on Astronaut Boulevard in Cape Canaveral , which is less than a 10-minute drive from the terminals. Visitors will also find last-minute shopping and convenience stores in downtown Cape Canaveral.

Wheelchair and Accessibility at Port Canaveral

Group laughing on Celebrity Apex (Photo: Giles Duley/AIPP)

Passenger and luggage drop off is available in front of the terminals. There are limited wheelchairs available for passenger assistance. If you require a wheelchair throughout the duration of your cruise, we recommend that you contact your cruise line for wheelchair rentals and further assistance.

Porters and Red Caps at Port Canaveral

Porters are available at each cruise terminal to assist with luggage.

Bathrooms at Port Canaveral

Each terminal has ample bathrooms. A few restrooms are also available within parking garages.

Port Canaveral Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is available in Terminals 1, 3 and 6.

Port Canaveral Waiting Area and Seating

Seating in each cruise terminal is based on ship size, with ample seating for the expected passenger count.

Carnival Freedom: Tips for Cruising from Port Canaveral

  • May 2, 2023

port canaveral cruise terminal carnival freedom

Sailing on the Carnival Freedom? This ship has been inspiring guests to let loose since joining her fleet in 2007. Mid-sized but mighty, this Conquest Class ship features Carnival’s most up-to-date eateries and entertainment selections, catering to families with a fun-for-all-ages atmosphere. If you have plans of cruising from Port Canaveral on the Freedom, we have all the Carnival Freedom tips you need to make your vacation seamless before it even begins.

port canaveral cruise terminal carnival freedom

Carnival Freedom Tip #1: Fly Into the Orlando Airport (MCO)

When booking a flight for your Carnival Freedom cruise, it’s highly recommended to fly into the Orlando Airport (MCO) for numerous reasons. Even though this airport is located about 45 miles from the cruise terminals, it has the shortest travel time compared to other local airports due to its direct highway access. The Orlando Airport also offers cruisers the most variety in flights, as well as better hotel selections nearby, and more economical transportation options. Bonus Tip: When flying in the same day as your cruise, be sure to pick a flight that lands before 11:30 AM to ensure you have enough time to get to the port.

Tip #2: Arrive a Day Before Your Carnival Freedom Cruise

With unexpected travel delays being so common, a simple flight issue or heavy traffic can put you at risk of missing your cruise when flying in on embarkation day. Arriving the day before setting sail can give you added peace of mind and a more stress-free vacation experience. That’s why Go Port’s  Fly Snooze Cruise  packages are so popular among Port Canaveral cruisers. You can choose from various brand-name hotel options, such as Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, La Quinta, and Best Western –  with airport transportation and cruise transfers included in the package.

If you opt to fly into the  Sanford Airport  to utilize Allegiant Airlines’ flight savings or prefer the close proximity of the  Melbourne Airport  featuring Delta and American Airlines, you’ll be pleased to know that Go Port also offers select  Fly Snooze Cruise  packages for cruisers flying into these airports as well.

Tip #3: Book Pre-Arranged Cruise Transfers

Don’t wait until the last minute to figure out transportation for your Carnival Freedom cruise. Counting on ride-share services, taxis, or rental cars can be both pricey and unpredictable. On top of that, luggage space is limited with these options – typically leaving only enough room to accommodate a couple travelers and their belongings. Instead, use the most reliable and convenient way to travel between the Orlando Airport and Port Canaveral by booking pre-arranged shuttle transfers. With a company like Go Port , you can purchase the same transportation as your cruise line for just $29.99 per person, compared to Carnival’s rate of $35.99. Plus, there is plenty of room for your suitcases, bags, strollers, and other mobility devices, with luggage assistance at your service to take care of it all. If you already booked a hotel stay, you can also reserve cruise transfers from select hotels near the Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral here .

Tip #4: Stay in a Hotel Near the Airport

Staying at a hotel near the Orlando Airport is the best option when cruising from Port Canaveral on Carnival Freedom. When you land, there’s no better feeling than relaxing in your room just minutes after a long flight. Saving the trip to the port for the morning of your cruise also allows you to avoid paying a premium to be near the terminals – meaning you can book a nicer hotel at a lower cost. Additionally, late flight arrivals have the convenience of Orlando restaurants being open late and plenty of shops close by to pick up any last-minute essentials.

Carnival Freedom Tip #5: Choose an Afternoon Return Flight

The Carnival Freedom starts disembarking around 7:00 AM and the process typically lasts until 10:00 AM. Once you exit the ship and depart your cruise terminal, the ride back to the airport takes about an hour, depending on traffic. The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority recommends arriving three hours before your scheduled departure. This means you’ll want to book your return flight in the afternoon to ensure you have enough time to disembark, get to the airport, and make it to your gate.

Carnival Freedom Cruise Ship

Tip #6: Disembark From Carnival Freedom Early

Disembarking early is key for a smooth departure from Port Canaveral. Carnival offers a Carry Off disembarkation option that allows cruisers to bring their own luggage off the ship in order to avoid long lines while exiting and beat heavy traffic when leaving the port. To debark from the Carnival Freedom early, you will keep all your luggage inside your stateroom instead of placing it outside your cabin on the last evening of your cruise. The next morning, Carry Off guests will be called by muster station within the first hour after clearing customs to get off the ship first. Note that on your last full day aboard, you must cash out any casino ships or slips and complete your Customs Declaration. Guests are also encouraged to watch “debarkation talk” on channel 14 of their stateroom TV, where detailed instructions are provided.

These Carnival Freedom tips for cruising from Port Canaveral are brought to you by Go Port — a one-stop shop for Port Canaveral cruisers, making travel arrangements ashore simpler than ever before. By partnering exclusively with brand-name hotels and reliable transportation providers, Go Port takes the guesswork out of booking hotel, transportation, and parking packages to complement your cruise. Carnival Freedom Returns to Port Canaveral After Drydock

  • November 7, 2023

Carnival Freedom at Navantia

The Carnival Freedom returned to Port Canaveral earlier this week.

Following a drydock in Europe , the Carnival Cruise Line vessel resumed its regular schedule at the homeport on Nov. 6.

On the same day, the Freedom sailed from Port Canaveral for a five-night cruise to the Bahamas, and Turks and Caicos.

In addition to two full days cruising in the Caribbean, the itinerary included visits to Bimini and Grand Turk.

Sailing from its Central Florida homeport on a year-round basis, the Carnival Freedom continues to offer four- and five-night cruises to the Eastern Caribbean and the Bahamas through, at least, early 2026.

The ship’s itineraries feature various destinations and ports of call in the region, such as Amber Cove, Nassau, Princess Cays, and Half Moon Cay.

Starting in July, the Carnival Freedom is also scheduled to make regular visits to Carnival’s new private destination in the Bahamas, Celebration Key.

Now sporting Carnival Cruise Line’s new blue, red and white livery, the 110,000-ton vessel is fresh from a refurbishment at the Navantia shipyard in Cádiz.

In addition to receiving a rebuilt funnel , the Carnival Freedom also saw the addition of new venues and features.

Among the newly added spaces is the Heroes Tribune Bar & Lounge, which pays homage to the U.S. Armed Services personnel, and an expanded casino.

The ship also received a Dreams Studio, where guests can take professional portraits with the ship’s photographers.

Concluding Carnival Cruise Line’s Conquest Class, the Carnival Freedom originally entered service in 2007.

Built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, the 2,974-guest vessel offers most of the company’s trademark features, including the RedFrog Pub, the Alchemy Bar, Guy’s Burger Joint and more.

Other attractions onboard include a Carnival WaterWorks water park, The Punchliner Comedy Club, BlueIguana Cantina, the Dive-In poolside movie theater, the adults-only Serenity Deck, and more.

Cruises canceled following Carnival Freedom fire during busy spring break season

T wo cruises have been canceled this week during the busy spring break travel season, following a fire on the Carnival Freedom  the second on the ship in less than two years.

"Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," a Carnival spokesman told Fox Business.

Initial information from Carnival about the fire came on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, confirming the fire broke out at 3:15 p.m. ET Saturday on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel while it was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas.

Passengers with upcoming cruises nearly immediately began asking if they would be canceled, and at the time Carnival said no. However, "a thorough assessment" was completed in Freeport on Sunday, requiring it to return to the shipyard on Monday afternoon for the required repairs to stabilize the funnel.

Cruisers told the TV station the top deck was closed the rest of the trip, and they did not get to visit all the ports planned for their itinerary.

"We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation," the Carnival statement reads. The cruise line is providing guests on both canceled cruises with a full refund and a 100 percent future cruise credit.

Carnival thanked the passengers who were onboard during the fire, noting their "outstanding cooperation and support."

The Freedom's exhaust funnel previously caught fire in May 2022 while the ship was docked at Grand Turk Island in Turks and Caicos. Video from then also showed the ship’s funnel – referred to by some as the whale tail – consumed by flames and smoke.
