Another tour that combines the cultural highlights of Quito with the food of Ecuador is this fabulous tour with Bondabu .

The tour does both the historic center and some off-the-beaten-path places in the city that tourists rarely visit. And it’s heavier on the food than the previous tour on this list.

The tour starts in the historic center where you’ll see some of the most important plazas and buildings and learn about the history of Quito.

Then the tour travels north and gets more off-the-beaten-path stopping at a local flea market .

Next, you’ll find yourself in local neighborhoods visiting food markets to sample some local fruit and trying some local dishes. You’ll also get to visit a cool street art spot.

The tour ends with a sample of the chocolate that Ecuador is famous for as well as a cocktail or coffee .

On this tour, you’ll do 4 food stops .

I didn’t do this exact tour, but I did another tour with the same company (Bondabu), stopping at some of the same stops. I loved the tour I did with Bondabu, so I’m sure this tour is just as good.

“We had a great time with Ernesto that proposed us a non common touristic tour by showing us the hidden face, but also the authenticity, of Quito. Street art, Street Food, architectural buildings (going from French to Arabic house style), markets used by local people. Everything authentic and nice to see for those who really want to know Quito.” Get Your Guide Traveler ( Read More Reviews )

Next, you’ll hike around Limpiopungo Lagoon , where if it’s not too cloudy you’ll be able to get a view of the volcano in all its glory. That first night you’ll stay in a hotel near Cotopaxi.

You’ll begin day 2 at the community of Tigua, known for its colorful paintings of Andean life. After that, you’ll visit Lake Quilotoa —take some photos of the lake from the viewpoint and then hike down to the shore of the lake. Finally, you’ll head to the last city on the tour: Baños.

Day 3 starts in Baños with Ruta de la Cascada . This route along the Pastazsa River is lined with waterfalls and ziplining businesses. The route ends at the stunning Devil’s Cauldron Waterfall . The tour ends with a visit to La Casa del Arbol where you’ll get to try out its swing and take in views of Baños and the surrounding mountains.

“To put it simply, this adventurous loop is absolutely fantastic. Not only is the company excellent, but each of their guides brings a unique flair and has an amazing level of understanding and willingness to share, not just about the things in front of you, but about the broader context. They truly care not only about your experience, but about the country and the people (and animals) in it.” Chase_M ( Read More Reviews )

Quito Travel Guide & FAQs

When should i visit quito.

The temperature in Quito is the same all year round (a high of 66-68 degrees Fahrenheit and a low of 47-49 degrees Fahrenheit.) Even though it’s at the equator, it’s at such a high elevation that it never gets hot.

Quito has two rainy seasons :

  • March to May with April being the rainiest
  • October to November.

The best time to visit Quito is from June to August as these are the driest months .

How can I get to Quito?

Arriving in quito by plane.

Most people fly into Mariscal Sucre Airport on the outskirts of Quito.

To find the cheapest flights to Quito, first check Skyscanner . I love using Skyscanner. Whenever I search for flights on Skyscanner , it gives me more results than other travel websites because it includes both major airlines and local budget airlines. I also like how it gives a rating system for each result so I know which booking site to trust and which ones not to. I can book with the airline from Skyscanner as well. Try it out!

Arriving in Quito by Land

If you’re crossing the border from Colombia or Peru, you’ll most likely arrive at the Quitumbe Bus Terminal . Quitumbe is connected to the best areas in Quito to stay in by the new metro line and the trolley line.

Is it safe?

Quitumbe is the beginning of both the metro and trolley line, so you’ll likely get a seat, making it easy to keep an eye on your bags. I’ve taken the trolley to and from Quitumbe, and it felt safe.

How long should I spend in Quito?

I would spend at least 3 days in Quito . Plus, do 2 or 3 days of day trips from Quito. In that way, you can see the major attractions, get a feel for the city without feeling rushed, try some of its delicious Ecuadorian food , and explore a less touristy neighborhood.

An overview of my recommended Quito itinerary:

Day 1: Wander around the historic center and do this walking tour (any order).

Day 2: Take the cable car to Pichincha Volcano and stand on the equator at the Middle of the World with this tour .

Day 3: Explore a less touristy neighborhood of Quito with this street food tour . You can read about my review of the Quito street food tour here.

You can add day trips from Quito on days 4 and 5.

Day 4: Take a day trip to Otavalo with this tour that will also take you to Cayambe, Cotacachi, and Cuicocha.

Day 5: Do another day trip from Quito to Cotopaxi and Qilotoa doing this tour .

Day 6: Rest your weary travel legs at the Papallacta Hot Springs using these instructions on getting to to Papallacta

Is Quito safe?

For most visitors, Quito is a safe place to visit as long as you follow a few precautions.

You’re generally safe walking around during the day. But it’s at night when you need to be extra cautious. At night, take a taxi or Uber to get around in most parts of the city including the historic center. It’s best to avoid walking around at night in the historic center or San Blas.

The historic center has problems with pickpockets and scam artists that target tourists. One common scam is to spill something on you and as the thief is helping you clean yourself, he or she steals your wallet or phone.

Crime has increased in Quito recently. However, statistically, it is safer than Guayaquil. Compared to other cities around the world, it’s got about the same level of crime as Houston, Texas .

How can I get from the airport to my hotel in Quito?

There are several ways to get from the airport to your hotel in Old Town, La Carolina, or La Mariscal:

  • Airport taxi – There’s a taxi desk in the arrivals hall at the Quito airport. Pay the desk for the taxi ride. The price is fixed based on what zone you’re staying in. They accept credit cards. They will then arrange a taxi driver for you. I’ve used this service twice.  (US$30)
  • Arrange an airport pickup with your hotel in Quito. This is what I did when I first arrived in Quito. (US$30)
  • Public Bus – You can take a bus from the airport to 3 bus stations in Quito (Quitumbe Terminal, Rio Coca Terminal, and Carcelén Terminal) (US$2). From any bus terminal, you can take a bus, trolley, the subway, an Uber, or taxi to your hotel or hostel.
  • Private Transfer Service – You can arrange one through Get Your Guide (US$40 for 1 person or US$45 for 2 people) or Viator (US$36 for 1 person or US$40 for 2 people)
  • Rent a car – You can book your rental with Discover Cars . (US$77 – $100/day)

Where should I stay in Quito?

I recommend staying in the historic center (also called Old Town) for its beauty, culture, food, and convenience.

The best website for booking hotels in Quito is Booking.com . They usually have the best selection and the best rates.

I wrote an article on the best places to stay in Quito . But for those who want a quick recommendation of my favorite hotels in Quito , here it is:

BEST HOSTEL: Viajero Quito Hostel

BEST HOTELS UNDER US$40: Traveler’s House ,   TERRA PREMIUM & Posada del Maple

BEST HOTELS US$40 – $100: Friends Hotel & Rooftop & Chakana Hotel Boutique

BEST HOTEL US$100 – $200: Casa Joaquin Boutique Hotel

BEST HOTEL US$200 – $300: Casa El Edén

BEST HOTEL OVER US$300:   Hotel Casa Gangotena & Illa Experience Hotel

Wherever you stay, try to get a place with a rooftop terrace for views of the city and mountains . You can check out my Quito accommodation guide for a list of the best hotels with rooftop terraces.

Where can I find an ATM in Quito?

There are 3 major banks in Quito :

  • Banco Pichincha – Transaction fee is US$4.50
  • Banco Guayaquil – It has the cheapest transaction fee of US$1.50

I had a lot of problems getting ATMs in Quito to accept my debit card from the U.S. When I was in the Galapagos, I used an ATM. No money came out , but my bank still processed the transaction. It took me a long time to get the bank to sort it out and agree to cancel the transaction.

I had the best luck getting money from this ATM at the Santa Maria Supermarket in the historic center and from Banco Pichincha in La Mariscal . The weird thing was that the ATM at Banco Pichincha in the historic center never worked for me.

Where can I get a SIM card in Quito?

Three mobile phone companies sell SIM cards and data:

I used Claro in Ecuador and got my SIM card from a phone shop in the historic center. It cost me US$20 for the card and 30 days of 12 GB of data . However, I was probably overcharged. According to the Claro website , this is the rate for prepaid SIMs:

  • US$5 for 15 days and 5 GB
  • US$10 for 30 days and 12 GB
  • US$15 for 30 days and 20 GB

Whenever I added more data and days onto my SIM card, I paid US$10 and sometimes a US$1 fee depending on the shop.

The phone shop I bought my card from was across the street from the Santa Maria Supermarket .

However, for convenience , you can get an eSIM instead. You don’t have to worry about changing SIM cards. Use Airalo to buy your eSIM. They have eSIMS for many different countries around the world. Their prices are pretty good .

things to do in the old town quito

Welcome to our comprehensive guide to Quito’s Historic District, a captivating destination in South America that boasts a rich cultural heritage and a multitude of attractions. In this article, we will delve into the fascinating history, vibrant architecture, and must-visit landmarks of this enchanting district. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an architecture lover, or simply seeking an immersive cultural experience, Quito’s Historic District has something to offer for everyone.

Unveiling the Historical Significance

Quito’s Historic District, also known as “Centro Histórico,” is a UNESCO World Heritage site that encompasses the heart of Ecuador’s capital city. It stands as a testament to the city’s colonial past, showcasing an intriguing blend of Spanish influence and indigenous heritage. Exploring this district is like stepping back in time, as its narrow cobblestone streets, ancient churches, and meticulously preserved buildings narrate stories of a bygone era.

Marvels of Colonial Architecture

One of the standout features of Quito’s Historic District is its exquisite colonial architecture. Immerse yourself in the grandeur of Plaza de la Independencia, the main square that serves as the epicenter of the district. The square is adorned with significant buildings, including the Presidential Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace, and the Metropolitan Cathedral. Marvel at the intricate details of the facades, the imposing bell towers, and the richly decorated interiors, all testaments to the architectural mastery of the past.

Cultural Gems Await

Venture beyond the main square and discover a treasure trove of cultural gems scattered throughout the district. Begin your journey at the Church of the Society of Jesus, commonly referred to as La Compañía. This baroque masterpiece is adorned with dazzling gold leaf decorations, intricate woodwork, and awe-inspiring religious artwork. Its ornate beauty is bound to leave you spellbound.

Continue your exploration to the San Francisco Church, an iconic landmark that dates back to the 16th century. Step inside to witness a harmonious blend of indigenous and European influences, as well as a magnificent courtyard that exudes tranquility amidst the bustling city.

Embrace the Authenticity of Calle La Ronda

For a taste of traditional Ecuadorian culture, make your way to Calle La Ronda, a charming street lined with colorful colonial houses that have been transformed into artisan shops, galleries, and lively cafés. Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and aromas of this vibrant neighborhood as you explore the local crafts, sample traditional delicacies, and perhaps even enjoy a captivating live music performance.

Museums: A Glimpse into the Past

Quito’s Historic District is home to an array of exceptional museums that offer profound insights into the city’s history, art, and culture. The Museo de la Ciudad, situated in a beautifully restored colonial building, showcases a diverse collection of artifacts, photographs, and interactive exhibits that chronicle the city’s evolution over the centuries.

Art enthusiasts should not miss the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, an avant-garde art museum housed in a former military hospital. Here, you can admire thought-provoking contemporary artworks from both local and international artists, providing a glimpse into the city’s vibrant art scene.

A Gastronomic Journey

No cultural exploration is complete without indulging in the local cuisine, and Quito’s Historic District offers an array of culinary delights. Visit traditional markets such as Mercado Central to savor authentic Ecuadorian dishes bursting with flavors and aromas. Don’t miss out on trying the renowned “locro de papa,” a delicious potato soup enriched with cheese, avocado, and herbs, or the delectable “ceviche,” a refreshing seafood dish infused with citrus juices and spices.

For a truly immersive gastronomic experience, consider joining a culinary tour that takes you through the vibrant streets of the Historic District, introducing you to hidden culinary gems and local delicacies. From freshly baked empanadas to sweet treats like “helado de paila,” a traditional Ecuadorian ice cream, your taste buds are in for a delightful adventure.

Captivating Cultural Events

Throughout the year, Quito’s Historic District comes alive with captivating cultural events that celebrate its rich heritage. If you happen to visit during the Holy Week, witness the vibrant processions and religious ceremonies that fill the streets with an atmosphere of reverence and devotion.

Another highlight is the Festival of Lights, an annual event where the district is adorned with mesmerizing light installations, creating a magical ambiance that illuminates the historical landmarks and transforms the city into a spectacle of colors and creativity.

Exploring Beyond the District

While the Historic District itself offers an abundance of cultural wonders, don’t limit your exploration to its borders. Quito is nestled amidst stunning natural landscapes, providing opportunities for outdoor adventures just a short distance away. Consider embarking on a day trip to the nearby Pichincha Volcano, where you can hike to its summit and revel in breathtaking panoramic views of the city and its surrounding valleys.

Alternatively, venture to the Mitad del Mundo, a monument marking the equator line that divides the Earth’s northern and southern hemispheres. Here, you can straddle the equator and visit the Intiñan Museum, where fascinating experiments demonstrate the unique gravitational effects experienced at this global landmark.

What people love about ecuador tours from quito.

This was a great tour, the galápagos is amazing! G-adventure has a well organized tour. There are some early morning days but they don't matter because you are in the Galápagos! The rooms are basic but have air conditioning which is good since it is very hot there. José was a fantastic guide and had so much knowledge about the islands. Definitely choose the add-on snorkeling trips they are worth it. I think the Galápagos needs to be on everyone's list.
Amazing experience, and our guide was so knowledgeable and resourceful.
Absolutely memorable experience with Responsible Travel Agency! Their attention to detail and personal approach made my trip unforgettable. From customised itineraries like a small hike in Chimborazo to helpful tips along the way, they went above and beyond to ensure every aspect of the journey was comfortable and also will help if some unexpected changes happen during the trip. Thank you Santiago for a great time and friendly approach for arranging this tour!

Quito Inclusions & Exclusions

Quito highlights.

quito ecuador tours

Colonial Quito Highlights 1/3

Located in the Center of Quito, the old city holds the essence of the main capital with amazingly well conserved structures like no other place. With a world world recognition as the best conserved historic Center in Latin America – has created great awareness and a positive effect among local authorities, ongoing conservation efforts have been carried out to restore and protect the integrity of Colonial Quito. Dating back to the 16th century the old city breathes history with a fusion of Spanish, Italian, Moorish, Flemish and indigenous art.

quito ecuador tours

Colonial Quito Highlights 2/3

Architecture

The monasteries of San Francisco and Santo Domingo and the Church and Jesuit College of La Compañía with their rich interiors are pure examples of the so-called ‘Baroque school of Quito’, a fusion of European and indigenous art. La Compañía is probably the richest church in South America with its golden altar. The public buildings are of the heavy Spanish type. Facing on to the principal square are the cathedral, the government palace, the archbishop’s palace and the city hall. The finest building in the city is the Jesuit church, the facade of which is covered with elaborate carving.

Colonial Quito Highlights 3/3

Getting Around

With so much to see and do, the old city is highly condensed in a relativity small area that allows visitors to sweep the area by walking in the surroundings. Very narrow streets are common throughout the old city, mainly for their old structure that do not cope well and tend to get choked with traffic, so walking is usually the best way of getting around.

Outdoor adventures, incredible landscapes and diversity-driven culture place Ecuador high on any travel bucket list.  Spanning altitude-high Andean cities, sun-kissed beaches and wildlife havens, the South American nation offers some truly epic experiences.

Upon arriving in Ecuador, travelers of all kinds will find themselves enticed by the wide range of options and activities available. Want to hike to the highest point on Earth, swim in the Galápagos Islands and taste one of the finest cacao varieties in the world? That’s all possible in Ecuador.

Buckle up because you’re in for a ride. From exploring the Avenue of Volcanoes to strolling through UNESCO World Heritage Sites, these are the best things to do in Ecuador.

Turtles below the water in the Galapagos Islands

1. Enjoy the beauty of the Galápagos Islands

Embark on a journey to the Galápagos Archipelago to explore one of the best-preserved natural sanctuaries on the planet. Hop between islands to see the region's famous wildlife at places such as the Charles Darwin Station, Tortuga Bay, Lavva Tunnels and Tintoreras Islet. Among the long list of species inhabiting the archipelago — some of which exclusively live in the islands — are giant tortoises, blue footed boobies, iguanas and the only penguins to live by the equatorial line.

Hike along trails untarnished by human activity and enjoy the breathtaking views. For an unforgettable next-level experience, venture on guided scuba diving or snorkeling excursions — encounters with sea lions, rare fish and turtles are guaranteed.

Planning tip: While many sports rentals and tourism agencies offer courses and provide equipment for underwater sports, it is always recommended to bring your own wet suit as rental availability could be limited by size and demand.

2. Visit the Quilotoa Loop

Whether you opt for a full-fledged. multi-day trekking experience or you arrive by car from Quito, stopping by the Quilotoa Loop is non-negotiable.

Located about 179km south of Quito, the Quilotoa Loop is a popular hiking destination that sits about 3,910m above sea level at its highest point. With emerald-green waters and a stunning view of the Andean mountain range, this crater lake in the Andean Highlands is either the perfect destination for a hiking trip or an Instagrammable stop-off as you explore the Andean range.

Planning tip: Buses and transportation for day tours can take you straight to the crater, and they're bookable in nearby Latacunga. Catch a ride up and trek your way back to town, wrapping up your trip with a massive plate of chucgchucaras , Cotopaxi’s star dish.

3. Support community-based tourism in La Amazonía

Communities across Ecuador have crafted sustainable economy initiatives and projects to promote community-based tourism. In the Amazon region, a network of hotels, reserves and guided tours are available thanks to villagers and Indigenous people.

Explore the depths of the Amazon rainforest, learn about the lifestyle and traditions of Indigenous communities and marvel at the extraordinary wildlife at places such as the Sinchi Warmi community center in Puerto Misahuallí or Sani Lodge at the Yasuní National Park .

Known as Ecuador’s gateway to the Amazon, Puerto Misahuallí offers canoe sailing trips down Río Napo, guided tours to the rainforest and animal-watching experiences (spotting Capuchin monkeys at plazas will be free though). At Sinchi Warmi, the women of the Kichwa community introduce travelers to Indigenous rituals, traditional food and handmade crafts.

Deeper into the Amazon jungle, Yasuní National Park is a favored spot for bird watching, wildlife photography trips and learning about the Indigenous communities protecting this ultra-diverse biosphere.

Person in a red devil mask at the Diablada or Devil Festival

4. Witness La Diablada Pillareña

It might only take place once a year, but villagers of Pillaro, a town in Tungurahua, prepare all year for La Diablada Pillareña. Steeped in tradition, spirituality and dose of irreverence, this festival perpetuates a quirky colonial-era tradition that originated as a way to defy oppression and exploitation from Spanish religious institutions: dressing up as the devil.

Richly decorated masks, bold costumes and loads of symbolism are at the core of this celebration held every January. Communities come together to dance the day and night away in the streets, following classic banda de pueblo (instrumental band) tunes.

Planning tip: La Diablada Pillareña takes place between January 1 and January 6. If you want to partake in this colorful celebration, it’s best to make a day trip as finding accommodation in Pillaro is difficult. For time-saving purposes, you can sneak a stop in as you explore the Central Highlands or travel from the closest urban city, Ambato.

5. Admire gold-capped churches and colonial art in Quito

While Quito is often overlooked as a top destination within Ecuador, the capital city’s UNESCO-recognized historical center deserves at least a day in your itinerary.

Admire the Spanish-influenced architecture as you walk the cobblestone streets, apprise the gilded colonial churches and marvel at the art of mestizo and Indigenous masters from La Escuela Quiteña (Quito’s School of Art). Must-see landmarks include Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, Iglesia Convento de San Francisco and Catedral Metropolitana.

Local tip: Before heading elsewhere, venture into the cafe-lined streets or stop by the restaurants at Palacio Arzobispal for a taste of quiteños ’ favorite treats.

Dancers at a Christmas parade in Cuenca, Ecuador

6. Touch down in Cuenca to discover southern Ecuador

Boasting a slew of nicknames including “the Athens of Ecuador,” Cuenca attracts tourists with picturesque streets, vibrant culture and cuencanos ’ charming accent. Artisans shops, museums, modern cuisine restaurants and the uber-popular blue-domed cathedral are among the most popular attractions in the city.

Cuenca also serves as the perfect point of departure to nearby national parks and archeological sites, as well as a good starting point for a trip around southern Ecuador.

Local tip: If you’re online, you’ve probably come across viral videos of energy limpias (cleansings) in Cuenca. Rooted in Indigenous tradition and syncretism, limpias are popular rituals throughout Latin America. The idea is that curanderas (healers) clean your energy and spirit as they rub herbs like eucalyptus, rue and rosemary all over the body  For the full experience in the city, hit a local market and for this traditional herbal cleanse – Mercado 10 de Agosto, Mercado 27 de Febrero and feria libre (open market) are some of the most trusted spots for a limpia in Cuenca.

7. Enjoy traditional music and festivals in the Northern Highlands

Though Indigenous music and dance are prevalent across communities of the Ecuadorian serranía (highlands), Andean music tradition is particularly strong in the northern province of Imbabura. Visitors can immerse themselves in Indigenous culture at artisan workshops, local music stores and festivals.

In the city of Otavalo and neighboring communities, Indigenous-owned establishments like Taita Gundo Casa de Música Andina and Taller Ñanda Mañachi offer a peek into music instrument creation and traditional performances.

Festivals and religious celebrations such as Inti Raymi and Fiesta de San Juan also serve as an opportunity for tourists to enjoy and learn about Indigenous folklore.

Planning tip: If you want to get a glimpse of some of the biggest festivities in the Northern Highlands, plan your trip during the summer. Celebrations commemorating Inti Raymi, San Juan and San Pedro y San Pablo take place between June 21 and June 28.

View towards the Cotopaxi volcano, Ecuador, with its summit covered in snow

8. Follow the Avenue of Volcanoes

Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts can’t skip the chance to tour the Andean Highlands as they follow the Avenue of Volcanoes — the name given to a segment of mountain range that divides Ecuador into regions.

Stretching about 350km, this route encompasses well-loved volcanos and snow-capped hiking destinations including Mount Chimborazo , Volcán Cotopaxi and the Quilotoa Loop. You can tailor this experience according to your preferences, stopping by small towns of the Ecuadorian serranía , lodging at haciendas such as La Ciénaga or Abraspungo , joining trekking and hiking excursions or even opting for horseback riding tours with chagras (Ecuadorian cowboys).

Planning tip: Due to the high altitude of the mountain range, you could experience altitude sickness. Before embarking on this journey through the Andean region, let your body acclimate. Quito, sitting at 2850m (9350ft) above sea level, would be a great starting point to kick off this route.

9. Eat, live and surf on the Pacific Coast

Spanning five provinces, Ecuador’s coastline is a playground for all sorts of tourists, and the different types of swells converging in Ecuador make Montañita , Canoa and Ayampe prime surf destinations.

Meanwhile, National Park Machalilla is the go-to spot for nature-loving individuals hoping to catch a glimpse of unique wildlife –pelicans, albatrosses, boobies and humpback whales all make appearances. Secluded beaches like Los Frailes, Playa Tortuga and Playa Rosada, on the other hand, are ideal for relaxed retreats due to their calm clear waters and the absence of major hotels and tourism hubs.

The common thread uniting all these destinations will be the fantastic gastronomic offerings, from Ecuadorian ceviche (brothy seafood marinated with citrus juices and served with fine herbs, onion and tomato) to coconut-based beverages.

Planning tip: Humpback whales migrate every May to Puerto López in Manabí, attracted by the warm waters of the Machalilla National Park. The whale-watching season runs from June to September.

10. Explore the Chocó Andino

Covering about one-third of the Pichincha province, the Chocó Andino is a biosphere reserve located northwest of Quito. Spanning an extension of over 2868 sq km, the mist-kissed hills and cloud forests are home to an impressive concentration of wildlife: rare birds, a wide variety of butterfly species, amphibians and the Andean Spectacled Bear inhabit this ultra-biodiverse but endangered area.

Bird-watching tours, wellness retreats at spas surrounded by lush forests, wildlife photography experiences and trekking are some of the options for those wishing to visit this protected haven.

Ecuador hit by nationwide blackout, leaving 17 million in the dark

Ecuador was hit with an hours-long nationwide blackout on Wednesday that left the South American nation’s 17 million people without power.

The blackout — which affected hospitals, homes, and a major subway system — was caused by maintenance and transmission issues in the country’s electrical system, authorities said.

“The outages we had today were due to a lack of investment in maintenance, new electrical transmission, and the protection of the electrical transmission infrastructure,” Public Infrastructure Minister Roberto Luque told a news conference on Wednesday.

As of Wednesday night, energy had been restored in 95% of the country, according to the government.

Ecuador has been struggling with an energy crisis for years. The latest saw Ecuadorean President Daniel Noboa declare an energy emergency in April and order eight-hour nationwide power cuts amid a drought that affected power generation.

In the capital city of Quito, a CNN team saw two hospitals, including a children’s medical center, lose power during the blackout. Both hospitals were able to rely on electricity from their generators shortly after the cut began.

In the nation’s largest city of Guayaquil, the blackout also briefly affected two other hospitals. “The power was cut but we have our own (generators),” a doctor from Guayaquil’s Luis Vernaza hospital said. CNN reached out to the country’s Health Ministry to ask if other hospitals were affected.

Guayaquil residents faced the outage amid 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius) heat. “It’s unbearable, it’s so hot and humid, and we can’t use an air conditioner or a ventilator,” one resident told CNN.

“On top of this, the water is not running,” the resident added.

Service was interrupted on Quito’s subway system due to the blackout, with the capital’s Mayor Pabel Muñoz saying the outage was so “significant” it had affected the subway despite it using “an isolated (electrical) system.”

Infrastructure Minister Luque said the blackout could have been avoided had Ecuador carried out an investment plan to “safeguard the infrastructure in both generating (power) and the transmission” after a similar power outage took place in 2004.

Wednesday’s blackout is not related to the country’s energy crisis from last April, Luque said.

“The outages we had in April were due to lack of investment in new (power) generation and in maintenance of the (power) we have,” Luque said.

Ecuador has experienced a nationwide power outage, plunging the country of 18 million people into darkness.

The blackout disrupted daily life and public transportation as officials scrambled to address the problem.

Power has started returning gradually, at least in the capital Quito, about an hour later, AFP reports.

Public Works Minister Roberto Luque, who is also the acting energy minister, explained the situation on social media platform X.

“There is a failure in the transmission line that caused a cascade disconnection, so there’s no electricity at a national scale,” Luque stated.

The outage caused significant chaos in Quito.

Mayor Pabel Munoz said on X: “The incident must have been major because it even knocked out power to the metro, which has its own separate system.”

He had ordered the deployment of special teams to help anyone who may be trapped, prevent accidents and “take care of public spaces.”

Social media videos showed commuters navigating darkened streets and stalled subway trains, forced to walk through tunnels on foot.

Traffic lights were out of order, exacerbating the confusion and gridlock.

An AFP correspondent observed traffic chaos also hit the big Pacific port city of Guayaquil, where people became stranded in elevators in office and residential buildings.

In Guayaquil, Ecuador’s port city, theme park visitors were left stranded on rides as they abruptly stopped functioning due to the outage.

Trams in the southern city of Cuenca also stopped running.

It was also reported that people became stranded in elevators of office and residential buildings across the country.

The Quito Metro addressed the issue on X, saying, “Due to a general failure of the national interconnected electrical energy system, the operation of the Quito Metro is interrupted while the systems are restarted and verified.”

This incident comes amid a broader energy crisis in Ecuador with the widespread impact highlighting the vulnerability of the nation’s energy infrastructure.

Ecuador relies on hydro-electric plants for 92 per cent of its electricity.

In April, President Daniel Noboa declared an energy emergency, foreshadowing the potential for power cuts.

Due to a persistent drought, the country has faced challenges with hydro-electric power generation.

Ecuador suffered rolling blackouts in April as a major drought left key hydro-electric reservoirs nearly depleted and Colombia halted the exportation of electricity to its neighbour amid its own dry spell.

Ecuadorians had to contend with planned cuts of up to 13 hours at a time.

The situation returned to normal when the rainy season arrived and the country suspended electricity rationing in May.

Over the past weekend, heavy rains exacerbated the situation, forcing authorities to shut down three hydro-electric plants and triggering a landslide that claimed at least 17 lives and injured 19 others.

The landslide also suspended operations at Ecuador’s private OCP oil pipeline, which declared force majeure in response to the natural disaster.

  • 12 comentarios
