“The Rescue” premiered to rave reviews at the 2021 Telluride Film Festival and went on to win the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. Other audience awards won on the festival circuit include Camden Film Festival, Mill Valley Film Festival, Bend Film Festival, Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival and several others. The film premiered in theaters on October 8, 2021 and is one of only three documentaries to cross the $1M mark in theatrical ticket sales at the box office this year. “The Rescue” currently has a 100% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin were also named Best Directors at the 2021 Critic’s Choice Documentary Awards.

In the summer of 2018, a short outing after soccer practice became a two-week saga of survival and a story that soon captured the world’s attention. Monsoon rains had trapped twelve boys and their coach in a labyrinthian cave in Northern Thailand, and within days thousands of people had descended on the area to try to help. But were the boys even still alive? Anticipation and anguish hung in the air until they were found, trapped in a pitch-black chamber two kilometers deep into the cave. The next question—immediate, obvious, and confounding—was how to get them out.

“The Rescue” is a dramatic and emotional retelling of one of the most perilous and extraordinary rescues in modern times. With exclusive interviews and a wealth of never-before-seen material, the film takes us into the infamous cave, highlights the efforts of the Royal Thai Navy SEALs and US Special Forces, and details the expert cave divers' audacious venture to dive the boys to safety. The film keeps viewers on the edge of their seats as it shines a light on the high-risk world of cave diving, the astounding courage and compassion of the rescuers, and the shared humanity of the international community that united to save the boys. In the tradition of their earlier films “Free Solo” and “Meru,” Vasarhelyi and Chin document a profoundly daring physical feat, laying bare the details of the seemingly impossible rescue.

The film’s award-winning full soundtrack from composer Daniel Pemberton, along with the original song titled “Believe” from singer-songwriter Aloe Blacc were released today from Disney Music. Pemberton has been regularly cited as one of the most exciting and original new voices working in modern film scoring today. In 2021, he received his first Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for his work on “Hear My Voice” co-written with Celeste, in addition to winning Film Composer of the Year by the World Soundtrack Academy. Constantly working with some of the most renowned names in the industry Pemberton has scored projects for the likes of Danny Boyle (“Yesterday,” “Steve Jobs”), Ridley Scott (“All the Money in the World,” “The Counsellor”) Aaron Sorkin (“The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “Being The Ricardos”), and Darren Aronofsky (“Welcome to Earth”, “One Strange Rock”.)

Said Pemberton, “’The Rescue’ is an incredibly intense and thrilling cinematic experience. However, the directors Jimmy and Chai wanted the audience to leave with a sense of release and hope and tasked us with writing a song that was unashamedly optimistic and that captured, in their words, the idea you could ‘believe in the impossible’. There are two key moments in the film we all found ourselves drawn to - when the UK divers first encounter the boys in the cave, Rick Stanton simply says the word ‘believe’ over and over again in surprise and shock, and later when US Marine Derek Anderson asks ‘what does the impossible look like?’. We all wanted a song that captured that feeling, that elation, and that moment of hope when all thirteen boys, against all odds, were brought out alive. It’s been a fantastic journey working alongside Gary Go and Aloe Blacc to create something that hopefully represents that very unique moment of global positivity and optimism.”

Aloe Blacc, the singer/songwriter of “Believe” added, “The world's biggest problems are only as complicated as our willingness to join as a global community to solve them. I believe that together we can overcome any obstacle.”

In my “editor’s note” in the July issue, I mentioned that I recently got to experience the power of a well-organized, energized rescue group. I was at a loss as to how to best help Buddy, a very handsome but very boisterous young hound, who had been in my local shelter for going on two months without finding a home – and whose behavior was deteriorating by the day. His best outlet for his frustration at being locked in a kennel day after day was to loudly bark (as only a hound can, WAAOOO, WAAOO!) every time he saw or heard a person in the kennel, and to leap wildly at his kennel door as anyone approached. This made him not so appealing to would-be adopters. No matter that once you took him outside and let him run around a bit, he was a sweet, affectionate, smart guy. People have a hard time seeing past that WAAOO!

About a year ago, I had reached out to this hound rescue group, the American Black and Tan Coonhound Rescue, on behalf of another hound my shelter had trouble placing. She was a gorgeous Black and Tan Coonhound, and I found the rescue group by googling for rescues for her breed. Just before we were about to transport her to the rescue, however, an adopter showed up at the shelter and she found a home after all. So, despite the fact that Buddy the Loud Hound was a Treeing Walker Coonhound, as week after week dragged by – and I saw the shelter staff increasingly grow frustrated with Buddy’s behavior – I reached out to the group again. Could they help with a non-Black and Tan?

To my delight, they said yes – and within a week, Buddy was transported by a chain of volunteers over a thousand miles to an experienced hound foster home. And within 2-3 more weeks, the group had found him a PERFECT home with an experienced hound family. (And both the foster family and his adoptive family found him to be a well-mannered, calm, sweet dog – not at all like his frustrated, stressed self at the shelter.)

Here’s the hitch: Once you discover the power of a good rescue group, it’s addictive. When you see the photos of a once-threatened dog, now a beloved and well-adjusted member of a healthy family, you think, I want to do this again! You find yourself bidding on or donating items for a fundraising auction. Or, like me this morning, you find yourself signing up for a leg in another journey, transporting some lucky hound from a shelter to a new life in a home. Or, you may jump in with both feet and raise your hand (metaphorically) to volunteer to foster a dog until the perfect home can be found for him. (I’ve done that a bunch of times, but not yet for a hound; my home is not well set-up for large or potentially predatory dog. I have two cats and three chickens and not super-high fences.)

If you find a good rescue group, consider giving it a whirl. It’s a great feeling. As Miyo starts to get used to living with Kudo in his house, she is abducted by her family and tortured. They force her to renounce her marriage to Kudo, beating and scaring her emotionally. After Kudo learns of their actions, he comes to their house with literal thunder, destroying their home and rescuing Miyo.

The Hideout Raid arc, My Hero Academia

After various attacks from the League of Villains, the villains successfully kidnap Bakugo. This prompts a massive rescue operation from the Pro-Heroes and students. The mission also sets up one of the biggest battles in the entire series. Deku, Momo, Kirishima, and Todoroki were able to track the Nomu to an abandoned warehouse. As a fight between the heroes and villains ensued, the moment went from bad to worse with the appearance of All for One. Meanwhile, Deku and his friends save Bakugo and Ragdoll. All Might engages in a decisive battle with All For One.

Sasuke Retrieval Mission, Naruto

After a run-in with his brother, Sasuke faces the harsh reality of how weak he is, compared to Itachi. Sasuke sees his only way forward by allying with Orochimaru, who had just recently killed the third Hokage. Naruto enlists the help of Shikamaru, Neji, Choji, and Kiba to bring Sasuke back to the village. Together, they confront Sasuke and the Sound Five, although the latter are ultimately defeated. Sasuke successfully joins Orochimaru and becomes one of the series’ antagonists.

Enies Lobby, One Piece

Since its release in 1999, One Piece has had many stellar arcs. However, not all the arcs capture the emotion and action of the Enies Lobby arc. After a run-in with the Cipher Pol on Water 7, Robin turns herself in to save her friends. Luffy and his crew, alongside the Franky family, break into Enies’s lobby to save her friends. Due to the trauma caused by the buster call when she was younger, she was ready to die rather than be a burden to her friends. The arc had a lot of highlights, but the most memorable was Robin declaring she wanted to live. This singular action was why the straw hat pirates declared war on the world government.
