No matter what garden you visit, honestly, you won’t be disappointed!

The pathways of the rose garden all lead to a gazebo in the middle, while trees and flowers bloom around it, at the Ringling Museum.

Explore the Banyan Trees

Since we were recently talking about gardens and plants, it only seems appropriate to also talk about Banyan trees! Mable, when creating the estate of the Ringling Museum, imagined the estate with exotic trees and plants! So they collected them along with their art. Today, you can see touches of this exotic life growing on the estate itself.

On the 66 acre garden of trees, there are 14 Banyan trees. This is the largest collection in Florida. They are all located on the Millennium Tree Trail. Together, they provide a nice relief from the intense Florida sun and pair well with the other trees of oak, holly, citrus, and magnolia that also sit in the wonderful area.

Victoria stands at the base of Banyan trees at the Ringling Museum: the bamboo tower around her.

About John Ringling and the Ringling Circus

John Ringling , a self-made entrepreneur, found success as one of seven Ringling Brothers. As one of the brothers, he agreed to collaborate with the Barnum & Bailey Circus to bring something incredible to people across the country through the art of travel circuses. He played a significant role in helping turn the circus into what it has become today, something families look forward to visiting when they want to see fun and adventure live and in front of their faces.

Choosing to combine two circuses into one for a truly remarkable, one-of-a-kind experience for viewers, the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey debuted their new circus at Madison Square Garden for spectators to watch and enjoy. The move would change everything within the circus world as they knew it and quickly led to the Ringling Brothers becoming known as the Circus Kings, John included.

So, what makes John so special? He was the last surviving brother and operated as President of the company, handling everything from logistics to scheduling, management, and more with help from his wife, Mable.

Because of his remarkable success as President, John decided to buy the American Circus Corporation in 1929 for a staggering  $1.7 million, becoming the proud owner of every single travel circus in the United States. His commitment to the circus world doesn’t go unnoticed and will continue to live on as people visit the Ringling Museum and learn more about him and his wild journey.

Sarasota – Winter Home of the Ringling Circus

Nearly 100 years ago, John Ringling decided it was the perfect time to transport the circus, known as The Greatest Show on Earth, from its original winter home in Bridgeport, Connect, shifting it to the beautiful, warm area of Sarasota, Florida. It was during a time when John and his wife, Mable, were investing in real estate in the area, ultimately falling in love with everything about the beautiful city of Sarasota.

While it was a huge decision to make, it benefited John Ringling and the winter circus as it became the biggest attraction in the city , capturing the attention of many and turning Sarasota into the place to be during the winter.

What to See at the Ringling Museum

When visiting the Ringling Museum, you can expect to see and learn a lot. From the impressive gallery full of fantastic artwork to the tour of the Ca’d’Zan Mansion and so much more, you’ll spend hours gaining valuable new knowledge and discovering all the hidden secrets and exciting tidbits about the circus world.

Here are some of the exhibits you can enjoy, and our thoughts about them from our own visit!

Circus Museum at the Ringling

The Circus Museum at the Ringling is one of the best spots to visit during a trip! Honestly, I was a super interested in this at first. But after popping into the exhibit, I can say that this was one of the COOLEST exhibits! We loved it and found the whole collection absolutely fascinating!

The interactive museum has something for everyone, whether traveling alone, with other adults, or with the children. Have a fantastic time learning more about the history of the circus while trying your luck at walking on a wire or squeezing yourself into the bright-colored clown car. Get an inside look at some of the most stunning costumes worn by performers throughout the decades and even review the archives to learn more about past performances and how they’ve changed over the years.

There were so many fun things to explore and interact with at the circus museum. PLUS — they have seriously the coolest gigantic dioramas that show the massive scale of the production when the circus came to town. I knew it was a big deal back in the day, but this really put it into perspective. It was like building an entire town…and then picking it up to move it, and build it again somewhere else!

Do NOT miss the diorama room. You can walk all the way around and it actually takes quite a while. But it is really cool to see.

Ca’d’Zan (House of John) – AKA “The Ringling Mansion”

Ca d'Zan Ringling mansion in sarasota front

Would you like to see what it was like living in luxury as a circus leader? If so, you’ll want to stop by the Ca’d’Zan, a place that John and Mable Ringling once called home. Despite their relatively humble beginnings in life, the two would eventually live a life of luxury. The mansion was first built in the 1920s and quickly became the coveted winter home for the couple, who spent most of their winters beating the cold weather by living in this beautiful mansion.

The Mediterranean-style mansion takes up roughly 36,000 square feet, with more than 50 rooms sprawled throughout the property, and is quite the sight to see. Get a feel for how the Ringling couple lived their lives with a tour of this spacious, stunning mansion with its incredible architecture and interior design.

John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art

Another fantastic sight to see during your trip to Sarasota is the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. Long before his death, John Ringling became a collector of artwork who found inspiration and joy in such astonishing pieces crafted by artists across the country. Meeting Mable, someone as enthusiastic about art as him, was like a dream come true.

The couple would eventually spend time attending auctions and bidding on different pieces, including tapestry and paintings, amassing an impressively large collection of artwork to use around their home. Now, much of that artwork is displayed for the rest of the world to see at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. If you’re an art enthusiast looking forward to seeing thought-provoking pieces that can leave you inspired, this is the museum to visit.

How Long Does It Take to Visit the Ringling Museum?

A trip to the Ringling Museum can take several hours, at minimum. It really depends on how much you want to explore.  You could just make a quick trip of it, but if you really want to soak in the circus museum, mansion and also the art museum, then I think you do need the better part of a day.

If anything, plan to spend 3-4 hours minimum, just to ensure you aren’t super rushed. Still, I think you could spend even more time if you prefer.

Will Kids Enjoy the Ringling Museum?

Many kids will enjoy certain aspects of visiting the Ringling Museum. In particular, the Circus Museum is a really fun area. There are lots of colorful costumes and also many interactive exhibits, including some videos too. While the Ringling Mansion and Art Museum may be of less interest to children.

When the kids get restless there are open grassy park-like areas in between the various exhibit buildings where the kiddos can work out some of their energy. The David F. Bolger Playspace is a playground area on the property with slides, swings, and fountains too.

Is There Food Available at the Ringling? Or Can I Bring a Picnic?

Coolers are allowed if you’d prefer to save money and pack a lunch (just not during special events). Because you can expect to be there for quite a while, consider packing some snacks for the kids.  The Dwarf Garden is a great place to set up a picnic and enjoy a break from exhibits.

But there are also multiple food options onsite around the property. You can visit Mable’s Coffee and Tea to grab a quick sip and a bite to eat or you can stop by The Ringling Grillroom, The Ringling Concessions, and The Wandering Chef Food Truck.

How Much Do Tickets Cost to Visit the Ringling & How Can You Buy Tickets?

Museum admission tickets cost $25 for adults, $23 for seniors at least 65 years old and up, $5 for children between the ages of 6 and 17, and are completely FREE for anyone five and under. Special discounts are available for military members, college students, and Florida state teachers. If you fall under one of these categories, you can enjoy access to the museum at a reduced price!

Visiting the Ringling Museum and Ca’ d’Zan Mansion

ringling house tour

Spend a day exploring the extensive Ringling Museum , a 66-acre museum complex in Sarasota, FL. You’ll find incredible examples of art, historic memorabillia and architecture at the Museum of Art, Circus Museum, Ca’ d’Zan mansion, Bayfront Gardens and more.

ringling house tour

John Ringling was one of five brothers who founded and operated the famed Ringling Bros. Circus beginning in the late 1800s. His work on “The Greatest Show on Earth” earned him a small fortune and he became one of the richest men in America at the time. John and his beloved wife Mable purchased 20 acres of waterfront property in Sarasota, and in 1924 began construction on a Venetian Gothic style mansion.

Ca’ d’Zan

Known as the Ca’ d’Zan or “House of John”, the 36,000 square foot mansion was completed in 1926. The staggering $1.5 million estate served as the winter home of John and Mable Ringling. The 41-room bayside home is filled with impressive architectural details and luxurious furnishings. Mable Ringling oversaw every detail of the design and construction of the home, and it was truly her own work of art.

Self-guided and guided tours of the mansion are available for an additional fee. Check the website for additional pricing and information . Due to the delicate nature of the home and artifacts inside, all visitors must purchase a tour ticket prior to entering the home and photography is not allowed inside.

We definitely recommend going inside on a tour of Ca’ d’Zan. You’ll get to experience amazing architecture and furnishings.

Museum of Art

The Ringling is the State Art Museum of Florida and home to one of the preeminent art and cultural collections in the United States. After the completion of Ca’ d’Zan, John Ringling built a 21-gallery Renaissance-style museum to house his extensive personal collection of paintings and art.

Ringling filled the Museum with European paintings, paneled rooms from the Gilded Age Astor mansion in New York, and ancient and medieval objects purchased from distinguished collections. Upon his death in 1936, Ringling bequeathed the Museum to the people of Florida.

The Art Museum is gigantic. An art lover could happily spend a day in this portion of the grounds alone. The galleries feature everything from antiquities to old masters, modern artists, bronze casts of iconic sculptures (includine Michaelangelo’s David), and the more recent addition of the Asian Art wing.

Guided tours of the art museum are included with standard admission.

Circus Museum

While the Ringlings did not create this portion of the grounds, it pays homage to the legacy they created with the circus. The museum features memorabilia from the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus like colorful costumes, props and posters.

The Tibbals Learning Center houses additional posters and memorabilia, plus interactive exhibits like a tightrope walk and clown car. But its most impressive feature is the 3,800 square foot Howard Bros. Circus Model, a 44,000-piece re-creation of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. This amazing exhibit is a must-see.

Bayfront Gardens

The extensive Ringling grounds showcase amazing banyan trees, tropical plants and palms, and Mable’s Rose Garden. You can also view the Ringlings’ final resting place in the Secret Garden near the mansion.

A Guide to the Ringling Museum and More in Artsy Sarasota

Find a mix of masterpieces and circus lore in this florida city rich with culture.

Guests view displays inside the large-open areas at The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art

COVID-19 Update

The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art  requires face masks indoors and outdoors when social distancing isn't possible, and is operating at reduced capacity due to the pandemic. Visitors are encouraged to buy tickets online in advance. Be sure to check the museum's website for updates and Florida's Department of Health for the state's latest  COVID-19 guidelines  before visiting. Also note current  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines  for travelers.

You could spend a few days exploring this cool city’s art offerings, not to mention the area’s spectacular white-sand beaches. But there’s one museum in Sarasota that should be at the top of your must-see list: The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, an expansive 66-acre complex fronting Sarasota Bay, offers a unique mix of European masterpieces, tropical gardens and the flashy world of the American circus.

An Overview

The complex includes a Circus Museum, the Ringlings’ extravagant winter residence and an arboretum, but your first stop should be the palatial, pink Renaissance-style art museum. It dates to 1930, when circus baron John Ringling commissioned its construction and opened it with just one gallery, with additional ones added over the years. Today, 21 galleries house a dizzying range of masterworks, including a European collection featuring Italian and Flemish Baroque paintings by the likes of Peter Paul Rubens and Titian, the Italian Renaissance master from Venice. Its Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Center for Asian Art include treasures such as a 10th century Buddha sculpture, an 8th century amphora, and fine ceramics from all periods of Chinese history.

John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art

The Venetian-Gothic Ca’ d'Zan, the Ringlings’ 36,000-square-foot residence built in 1926, offers commanding views over Sarasota Bay and flashes back to the decadence of the Roaring Twenties. The palazzos lining the canals of Venice inspired the pink-hued estate, restored in 2002 to the tune of $15 million. Opulent furnishings fill several rooms you can tour, including the lavish living room, where a crystal chandelier the Ringlings bought from New York's original Waldorf-Astoria hotel holds court with all its sparkle.

Plan Your Trip

Location:  5401 Bay Shore Road

Getting there:  From St. Petersburg, it's about a one-hour drive south on Interstate 275 to Sarasota. The city is about two hours southeast from Orlando. If you're starting your trip in Sarasota, you can fly into either the Sarasota-Bradenton or Tampa international airport and rent a car. (Tampa's airport is about 65 miles north of the museum via I-275/I-75, but may be more likely to have a direct flight, depending on your home city.) The museum has two free surface parking lots near the entry gates. Golf carts shuttle visitors from the lots to the entrance.

Visit:  Daily (closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day)

Admission:  General admission — $25 ($23 for adults 65+) — gives you access to the Museum of Art, Circus Museum and Bayfront Gardens. For an additional $10, add on a tour of the Ca’ d'Zan's first floor. Just strolling the grounds and gardens, $5. On Mondays, the Bayfront Gardens and Museum of Art are free.

Best time to visit:  Weekdays (except Monday) to avoid crowds

Best season to visit:  December, when twinkling white holiday lights add sparkle to the Ringling's grounds and summer's heat has given way to cooler (but pleasant) temperatures

Accessibility:  Lots have accessible parking. Accessible trams with ramps for wheelchairs transport the mobility challenged all around the vast property, which is crossed with sidewalks and pathways connecting all of the facilities. Wheelchairs are available at no charge (first come, first served) for those who find the grounds too spread out for navigating solely on foot.

Outside you'll find Bayfront Gardens, the property's gorgeous arboretum that's home to thousands of endemic trees and plants. Not to be missed: Mable's rose garden, which typically blooms in full splendor during the month of April. More than 1,000 bushes span 400 rose varieties, interspersed with statues along winding paved pathways. Wander through this world of nature's bounty at your own pace or take one of the 90-minute guided tours offered Saturday-Monday.

For something very different, head for the Circus Museum. Its two galleries are packed with artifacts — the showstopper a 44,000-piece replica of the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus, complete with tiny models of animals, circus tents, showmen and trapeze artists. Also check out the completely renovated 1896 Wisconsin railway car that John Ringling traveled the country in during his circus days. “The interior is all inlaid wood and gilded materials,” says Steven High, the museum's executive director. “You get a sense of what it was like to live in that time.”

Other Local Highlights

The Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College (1001 South Tamiami Trail). At this kunsthalle-style museum with no permanent collection, contemporary art takes center stage with temporary exhibitions of artwork from post-World War II to current times. Through May 2, “Architecture for Nature” showcases photographs of a dozen projects by architect Carl Abbott, who has mastered a design perspective that puts mankind in harmony with the environment. The Ringling College of Art and Design (no affiliation with the Ringling Museum) opened this new museum in late 2019 in the city's old Sarasota High School and two adjacent buildings.

The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens (1534 Mound St.). This 15-acre oasis downtown fronts Sarasota Bay with native orchids and bromeliads, plus butterfly and rainforest garden. It often presents temporary art exhibitions, too, including "Roy Lichtenstein: Monet’s Garden Goes Pop!" — a pop-art take on Monet's impressionist paintings, through June 27.

Do the Ringling House Tour

We have been to this museum twice. Seeing the circus exhibits was informative and fun. We especially enjoyed touring the private home and learning a lot about the personal lives of the Ringlings. I learned a lot about them. Seeing the rose garden was a lot of fun (so many varieties of roses). Seeing the inside of the train (their personal suites) was interesting. I learned a lot and felt I had a much better sense of the history of Sarasota and especially the Ringling's massive influence on the arts and culture of the city.

The museum brought back a lot of memories. The miniature circus make up display is worth the price of admission. The Mansion tour is NOT worth it. Just go to the building as the location is fabulous...then look in the windows...

We take all of our visitors to The Ringling. Some love the trees, the mansion is the favorite of many, the art museum where often there is a special exhibit but my favorite and the place where grandchildren are always happy is the Circus Museum and the nearby Learning Center. The new glass exhibition in the newly redone visitors entrance is outstanding. The Historic Asolo is very interesting if you are lucky enough to catch it when it is open to the public. The trees and the Bayfront make lingering and resting very tempting. It is truly a highlight and treasure in sarasota.

Great place to enjoy nature, beautiful grounds. We enjoyed museums and learning history of circus and grounds. Miniatures were fascinating. Disappointed that part of art museum currently closed. Lunch at restaurant was good too.

My husband & I spent over 3 1/2 hours to see the art museum(this area is free adm on Mondays) & the circus museum. We were not able to see everything in our time frame. The circus museum was very interesting.. especially the miniature display. They did an excellent job mixing the interactive displays in the circus museum. The gardens/physical space of this area is pretty.

We toured the mansion, circus and art museum. It is an extensive and interesting collection that took us the whole afternoon to enjoy.

How to Spend a Day at the Ringling Museum

By Bethany Ritz September 12, 2022

While I’ve seen some folks approach museums with a carpe diem vigor, determined to learn and take in everything in front of them, this sounds exhausting to me, particularly when it comes to a massive institution like the 66-acre Ringling museum complex.

I didn’t grow up going to museums and only started visiting them after high school. Early on, someone told me to treat a museum like a park: Don’t try to read too much or learn too intensely. Simply wander and go where your eye happens to land. It’s a worthy approach for an expansive space like The Ringling, which is a whole experience, not just the sum of single pieces of art.

You can spend a day, even two, exploring the galleries and gardens as an initial tour. When I first moved here, I got a membership so I could walk around at lunchtime on weekdays, when it was mostly empty, to clear my head. With four main components—the art museum, the circus museum, the Ca’ d’Zan mansion and the Bayfront Gardens—there is so much to explore. Not to mention the Glass Pavilion just inside the gate.

If you’re going to pick a single day to visit Ringling Museum, here are some things to consider: Mondays are free days for the art museum and gardens, so if you have a large group, it’s an affordable way to visit. This also means it’s the busiest day of the week. The campus is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Thursdays. The museum stays open late that day so visitors can visit James Turrell’s Skyspace exhibit, Joseph’s Coat , as the sun sets. It is absolutely something to experience.

So make a full day of it. Head to Mable's Coffee and Tea café (named for John Ringling's wife) when the museum opens for coffee and snacks, then explore the grounds. Either bring a picnic lunch and camp out at one of the tables or eat lunch in the museum’s restaurant, The Ringling Grillroom. You can also try it for dinner before heading over to the Skyspace. It's open and serving food from 11 a.m. to as late as 8 p.m.

On our recent visit, we sat down for lunch, which is something I always do at museums to reset and renourish before exploring more. We enjoyed the ahi tuna poke and the burrata and heirloom tomato appetizers. Both were delicious and reflect what chef Lydell Page has brought to the kitchen. Trained at Houston’s Cordon Bleu, he makes his sauces and gravies from scratch daily. The combination of flavors were surprising; in fact, the dishes were so good, I forgot I was in a museum.

I recommend visiting this museum complex often if you live here. Every time I go, I see something new. (This time, I discovered "Banyan Boy," which is the small statue of a boy that has been consumed by one of the massive banyan trees on the property. Only his face and part of his body peak through the root columns.) If you plan on a single visit, however, here are some things you don’t want to miss:

What to See in the Art Museum

Michelangelo’s david.

Location : Art Museum Courtyard

David is not only seen throughout Sarasota silhouetted on city signage. It’s also the most recognizable statue in the world. The one at The Ringling is a more recent bronze cast of the original white marble sculpture by Michelangelo. You think you’ve seen it and you think you know it, but beholding this statue in person is striking. It’s large. And yes, this is David, of David and Goliath. An unexpected size and stature to represent young David.

After Florence rid itself of two successive tyrants, David’s story—the story of the underdog, of good prevailing over evil—became a symbol of the freed republic. Originally commissioned to sit high up on the Cathedral of Florence, Michelangelo’s marble sculpture was too beautiful to be so far from viewers, and it was eventually moved to stand in front of the central government building in Florence, and later moved to the Gallery of the Academy of Florence. While the white marble sculpture served as a political symbol for the republic and a key work of art history for Florentines, in Sarasota, the bronze cast has come to represent our status as a city of arts.

(The annual  Ringling Underground  concert series sees local bands playing beneath the David to a raucous crowd in the garden.)

Mater Dolorosa , or Blue Madonna

Location : Art Museum, Gallery Nine

I had no idea what this was, but as soon as we entered gallery nine, I immediately walked over to see it more closely. As it turns out, this painting is one of the most visited in the permanent collection. You can even buy a small print of it in the gift shop.

Mater Dolorosa , or Blue Madonna , was painted in the 1670s by Onorio Marinari. It’s painted in a “Renaissance style,” in which the figure appears to be luminated from within. The blue of her shroud is as vibrant as “Carl Abbott blue,” the signature color of the celebrated local architect and artist.

What to See in the Circus Museum

Howard bros. circus model.

Location : Tibbals Learning Center

This is fun for everyone. Even your most snobbish visitors to Sarasota will not be able help but enjoy seeing this massive miniature replica of a traveling circus. I see something new every time I walk through the display, and the lights even change, so you can see how nighttime looks within the tiny circus. I never knew the circus was this much of a spectacle.

The Tibbals Learning Center is named for the creator of the model, Howard Tibbals .

The Wisconsin

Location : Historic Galleries, Room 105, Wagon Room

Trains were the transport of choice for the circus when rail lines took prominence over wagon-led troupes. The Wisconsin was the private railroad car for John Ringling and his wife Mable. John and Mable rode the Wisconsin to Sarasota to visit their new bayfront property where their house, the Ca' d’Zan, now stands. This rail car takes visitors back in time and is as delightful as it is uncanny to see the luxury the Ringlings' enjoyed. The only other train car like it holds Bob’s Train restaurant. (Head there for lunch one day and ask Bob for more circus history.)

The Ringling is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday. The museum offers special rates for veterans, students and teachers. For more, visit ringling.org

Ringling Museum opens Greatest Show on Earth exhibition

ringling house tour

For nearly 20 years, The Ringling’s Circus Museum has been a highlight for visitors with its displays of old show posters, memorabilia and a massive scale model replica of all the equipment, animals and people involved in moving a traveling big top tent circus from city to city by train cars.

That highly detailed model created by the late Howard Tibbals over more than 50 years of his life, takes up most of the ground floor of a building he helped pay for. And now, two years after his death at age 85, the Circus Museum has been updated to bring the history of the art form into the 21st century.

“The Greatest Show on Earth,” a new permanent exhibition, focuses on the period since Irvin Feld bought the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1967 and built up its following after a transition from outdoor tent shows to indoor arenas.

“Our timeline ended in about 1967, which was when the Feld family took over ownership of Ringling Bros. and we thought it was time to bring it up to date,” said Jennifer Lemmer Posey, the Tibbals Curator of Circus at The Ringling.

The new 3,500-square-foot area on the second floor features several rooms with interactive displays, a video in which costumes, props and performers appear to come to life, paper models of past circus productions and smaller video features that allow visitors to control what and how much they see and learn.

Lemmer Posey said Feld knew that building the indoor circus shows “was going to require a lot of work to fill up arenas that could seat thousands of people.” That led to the introduction of more lavish costumes and scenic elements, plus new lighting and sound technology. There are some samples of designs on display.

Tracing a changing circus history

For more than 10 years, visitors to the circus museum have been welcomed by a giant, nearly two-story-high mural in the entry hallway. It once hung at Feld Entertainment headquarters and highlights some of the famous artists, acts and behind-the-scenes personnel who have been involved over the years. Among those seen are Circus Sarasota co-founder and aerialist Dolly Jacobs; her father, the famed clown Lou Jacobs; Circus Sarasota clown and educator Karen Bell; clown Glen “Frosty Little”; the late legendary animal trainer Gunther Gebel-Williams, along with Kenneth Feld, Irvin's son who now runs the company with his children. Irvin Feld died in 1984.

Feld Entertainment, which is based in Palmetto, provided most of the material and memorabilia featured and was involved in the creation of the new area. “They have really supported this project and wanted to showcase their legacy,” Lemmer Posey said.

Outside the new exhibit area, the museum has updated the timeline scroll on one wall that traces developments in circus history from 2000 BC.

Visitors enter under a large lit-up marquee proclaiming “The Greatest Show on Earth” that was displayed in arenas during the 2016 circus tour. Walking into a room with bright red curtains, you see display cases with life casts of made-up clown faces, and a detailed map showcasing what life is like on a traveling circus show. In another room are multiple video screens controlled by moving your hand over a beam of light to determine what you see. Some feature photographs of different acts and others have videos.

Six years of planning

The project’s design process began in 2018, “and then the pandemic came and the supply chain was disrupted and it took longer than we hoped,” Lemmer Posey said. But the delays also allowed for more contemporary displays like those light and hand-controlled photos and video boxes.

“This exhibit will serve as a dynamic testament to the vitality and innovation of modern circus,” Ringling Museum Executive Director Steven High said in a statement. “We are thrilled to finally have permanent gallery space dedicated to the era of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus that many of our visitors remember.“

The new area opens just as Ringling Bros. has relaunched the touring circus show after it was shut down in 2017. It faced strong competition from a growing number of Cirque du Soleil shows, and pressure from animal rights groups.

A look inside museum collections: Ringling museum explores variations of the human figure in ‘Embodied’ exhibit

Ringling has had a strong Sarasota following because of its long ties to the community. Circus magnate John Ringling moved the circus winter quarters to Sarasota in 1927, where it remained and became a tourist attraction until a move to Venice in 1960. In 1992, the company moved the winter quarters, when new shows are put together, to the Florida State Fairgrounds because the Seminole Gulf Railroad abandoned about 10 miles of track into Venice.

The latest edition of The Greatest Show on Earth began touring last fall, with a Tampa stop in January.

Feld Entertainment has continued to do big business with a variety of other shows, including Disney on Ice, Monster Jam, Marvel Universe Live, Super Moto Cross and Jurassic World Live Tour.

The Circus Museum is included in regular admission to The Ringling. 5401 Bay Shore Rd., Sarasota. 941-359-5700; ringling.org

The city streets are full of remnants of the communist regime and the Cold War. This is a walking tour where I will show you the most exciting places in Soviet Moscow: from the notorious KGB headquarters, also known as Lubyanka to the Karl Marx Monument to small hidden remains from the time of hammer and sickle. 3-Day Moscow Tour Highlights:

  • Panoramic Tour of Moscow: See Moscow beyond the postcard images on a private excursion by car through the city streets including a drive along the banks of the Moskva River. Visit the famous Bolshoi Theatre, pass by Gorky Park and the Novodevichy Convent, and admire the city from on high at the Sparrow Hill observation platform.
  • Moscow Historical City Centre Guided Walking Tour : Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of one of the world’s biggest metropolises and discover local haunts on foot, including the Red Square, the Kremlin and the multi-coloured domes of St Basil’s Cathedral.
  • Armory Chamber tour: Explore the endless treasures of this unique museum, displaying the wealth accumulated by Russian rulers from the 12th century until the October Revolution of 1917. Walking through the exhibition halls is a journey through the centuries.
  • Moscow Metro Tour : Go deep underground on a subway tour of the famous Moscow metro. The world’s deepest metro system is renowned for its palatial, art-adorned stations, complete with marble columns and chandeliers.

On your first day, you’ll be treated to a panoramic, drive-by tour of Moscow to get a feel for the immense scale of one of the world’s most rapidly developing urban centres. The city’s history unfolds in real-time as you pass lavish imperial mansions, solemn Soviet structures and luxurious modern shopping centres.

Day two kicks off exploring Moscow’s historic centre on foot, followed by a tour of the Kremlin, the seat of Russian power and political intrigue for centuries. Stand in the Red Square, surrounded by the stunning architecture as you hear stories of the people and events behind many of Moscow’s most iconic landmarks.

On your final day, we’ll head beneath the city for a tour of the Moscow Metro and its famously ornate underground stations. Art lovers should hit up one of Moscow’s many world-class galleries such as the Tretyakov State Gallery, the Pushkin Museum or Garage, Moscow’s cutting-edge contemporary art museum. History fans can follow a Soviet trail through the city including Stalin’s Bunker, while those seeking a more indulgent experience can browse trendy neighbourhoods like Kitay Gorod or shop for everything from fashion to kitsch souvenirs at the enchanting Izmaylovo Flea Market. Foodies can head to one of the countless speciality stores sampling vodka, caviar and chocolate.

Russia Moscow Tour

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.
