Safari Porsche 911 SC driven by Ken Block up for sale

Listed on collecting cars, this porsche was driven by ken block in the 2022 east african safari classic rally.

A safari-specification 1978 Porsche 911 SC, driven by rally superstar Ken Block, has been listed for auction on the Collecting Cars platform.

Finished in Block’s ‘It’s A Living’ livery, the road-legal sports car competed in the 2022 East African Safari Rally Classic.

Built by the famed Tuthill Porsche company, the 911 SC represents a formidable classic rally machine.

‘One careful owner’

Ken Block Safari Porsche 911 SC

The East African Safari Rally Classic was first held in 2003, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the original Safari Rally. With a total distance of 1,133 miles, it clocks in at 100-miles longer than the entire U.S. Rally Championship.

Despite this Ken Block, and co-driver Alex Gelsomino, went all-in on the event. Collecting one stage victory, the duo finished in a respectable 19th position overall.

Since completing the event, the 911 SC has been returned to Tuthill Porsche in Oxfordshire. It still retains the dirt and dust collected on its African adventure .

Reinforcements incoming

Ken Block Safari Porsche 911 SC

Tuthill Porsche has developed a reputation for building impressive rally ready 911s . This particular 911 SC is no different, making use of a strengthened bodyshell.

Taken back to bare metal, the Tuthill team spent around 350 hours adding extra strengthening and double-skin reinforcements. Upgraded mounts for the suspension dampers were also installed.

Complete underbody protection was fitted , featuring sturdy ‘roo’ bars. The side windows are made from Perspex, whilst a safari roof vent is the finishing touch.

Inside, the 911 SC has a fully welded-in roll cage, a pair of Recaro bucket seats, and a dished Sparco steering wheel. Fire extinguishers and racing harnesses are present, too.

Powered-up Porsche

Ken Block Safari Porsche 911 SC

Powering the 911 SC is an air-cooled 3.0-l flat-six engine . A bespoke rally camshaft has been installed, said to push output to a considerable 280 hp. Tuthill fitted the Porsche with a competition-specification exhaust.

A bespoke safari five-speed gearbox is connected to a limited-slip differential. This uses a Tuthill gear lever, which features an extended shifter.

Custom Tuthill brakes are found behind the white 15-inch Braid alloy wheels. EXE-TC 5-way adjustable dampers, strengthened rear suspension arms, and a safari steering rack completed the build.

Ready to rally again

Ken Block Safari Porsche 911 SC

Tuthill notes that being in ‘as rallied’ condition means the 911 SC is wearing battle scars from its African competition. Minor damage can be seen on the lower body panels, with some repaired with tape.

Some dust and dirt can be found inside, but there are said to be no electrical mechanical faults with the car. It means it could be ready to rally again in next year’s Safari Rally Classic.

As a formidable rally machine in its own right, having been driven by Ken Block will only add to the appeal. Bidding had already been intense, ahead of the auction ending on Sunday, 5 June.

The legendary Safari Rally in Kenya returns to the World Rally Championship this weekend after an 19-year hiatus. These photos from the Girardo & Co. Archive encapsulate why the African event holds a near-celestial status for rally lovers…

From 1973 to 2002, the Safari Rally in Kenya struck equal parts awe and fear in the courageous drivers who competed there. Impossibly long special stages, stifling dust, sweltering temperatures and craggy, near-unpassable terrain, all set against a breathtaking backdrop, combine to make one of motorsport’s greatest spectacles.

Amid organizational and financial issues, the Safari Rally lost its WRC status in 2003. And tragically, the African round remained off the calendar for 19 years. But finally, on Thursday of this week, the current crop of World Rally Championship drivers started the Safari Rally and got a taster of the event’s unique challenges for the very first time.In light of the event’s return to top-flight rallying, we took to the Girardo & Co. Archive to find 10 photos which capture the magic of this epic endurance marathon held in one of the world’s most beautiful countries. We hope you enjoy looking at the images as much as we did searching for them. Oh, and Godspeed to all the drivers taking part in Africa this weekend.

Richard Burns and his co-driver Robert Reid scrabble desperately to unbeach their stricken Peugeot 206 WRC during the 2002 edition of the Safari Rally, an endeavour which would ultimately prove fruitless. We actually sold this very car earlier this year – click here to find out more about it.Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive.

For many, images just like this one of Alessandro Fiorio and Luigi Pirollo’s Lancia Delta Integrale absolutely caked in mud and with its additional spotlights ablaze back in 1990 are the first things that spring to mind when they think of the Safari Rally.Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive.

The Ford Motor Company’s squadron of pilots are introduced to some of the local wildlife during a rest stop on 1999’s Safari Rally. Only in Kenya!Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive.

Suspension raised to frankly comical heights, additional spotlights, snorkels snaking their way up the A pillars, spare wheels on the roof and enormous bull bars – if they’re to endure the toughest terrain on the WRC calendar, rally cars require a serious makeover for the Safari Rally. Here, the Kenyan drivers Shekhar Mehta and Rob Combes demonstrate why.Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive.

For us here at Girardo & Co., nothing screams Safari Rally more than a Lancia 037 Rally, spotlights ablaze, spare wheel bungee-tied to the roof and Martini livery obscured by a thick coating of dust, going hell for leather ahead of a vast trailing plume of thick dust. Just perfect.Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive.

Blissful oasis’ turn into treacherous hazards on Rally Safari – here, Alessandro Fiorio and Luigi Pirollo’s Lancia Delta Integrale takes a dip during the 1990 Rally Safari.Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive.

They don’t call it the Safari Rally for nothing – if drivers didn’t encounter at least one of the ‘Big Five’ by the end of the rally, we imagine they would have been bitterly disappointed. After all, they’d travelled all that way to Africa! Vic Preston and John Lyall caught this brace of elephants from their Lancia 037 Rally back in 1984.Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive.

Whether you’re cruising through central Rome during the Mille Miglia or traversing remote African plains at full speed, there’s something about motorsport which excites and unites people. Here, the filthy Toyota Celica Turbo of Didier Auriol and Bernard Occelli is cheered on at a railway crossing by frenzied locals, clearly loving the fact the World Rally Championship is in town.Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive.

Few drivers relished the challenge of the East African terrain like Colin McRae. The Scot won the notoriously difficult event thrice, in 1997, ’99 and 2002. He and his longstanding co-driver Nicky Grist can be seen here tackling a jagged rocky special stage on their way to victory in 1999. To say the conditions were punishing on the cars is a serious understatement. Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive.

We couldn’t put this list together and not include a shot of our beloved ‘P8 WRC’, the Subaru Impreza WRC in which Colin McRae and Nicky Grist won the 1997 Safari Rally and which we’ve made Internet famous over the course of the last four years.Click here to buy this photo from the Girardo & Co. Archive. The photos in this feature are from the Girardo & Co. Archive, which is our new treasure trove of three-million motorsport images from the 1970s to the present day, all of which are available to purchase directly from the website. CLICK HERE to search the archive and buy photos online.

All set for 2024 WRC Safari Rally

NAIROBI, March 26 (Xinhua) -- The World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally Kenya zooms off on Wednesday with the pre-event shakedown in Naivasha, about 90km northwest of the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

The shakedown allows drivers and their navigators to test the setup of their assembled machines and make changes if needed ahead of the final inspection before the race starts.

This week's Safari Rally, which ends on Sunday, is shaping up to be one of the most challenging since the event's return to the FIA WRC in 2021.

Heavy rain in the days leading to the race has muddied the roads, with some of the crews struggling in some sections.

Bringing the event forward in the calendar has returned the Safari to its classic March date, which aligns more closely with the rainy season in Kenya with 29 starters cleared to start the event proper on Thursday.

In an effort to deal with potentially flooded roads, many of the cars are running snorkels, which allow the engine to breathe whilst reducing the risk of ingesting water.

Toyota Gazoo Racing Team Principal Jari-Matti Latvala admitted the event could provide a different - and sterner - test than in previous years as the Japanese manufacturer seeks a fourth successive win in Africa's round of the WRC.

"Patience is always very important, and especially if the weather gets difficult. Being the smartest can be the key, rather than being the fastest. All of our drivers have shown what it takes to do well there and we would like to see another Toyota win," Latvala, who is a retired driver, told the official WRC website on Tuesday.

Eight-time world champion and last year's Safari winner Sebastien Ogier will sit out this year's event for Toyota. However, the team will parade reigning champion and 2022 Safari winner Kalle Rovanpera in their GR Yaris Rally1 car alongside Welshman Elfyn Evans and Japanese ace Takamoto Katsuta, twice a podium finisher in Kenya.

Evans comes to the Safari lying second in the 2024 WRC standings with 45 points, behind championship leader and Hyundai Motorsport star Thierry Neuville, who has 48 from the opening legs of Monaco and Sweden. Esapekka Lappi will be aiming to continue his winning form after he claimed a popular victory in Sweden in February. Finn, who drives part-time for Hyundai, will pilot their i20 N Rally1 car for the South Korean marque alongside Neuville and Estonian Ott Tanak.

The third works team in the top WRC 1 competition is the M-Sport Ford WRT. Adrien Fourmaux is the favorite in their PumaRally1 machine since he is coming fresh from his maiden podium in Sweden. Gregoire Munster and Jourdan Serderidis complete the British team's line-up.

Other competitions that will run alongside the main race in this year's event are the WRC2 and WRC3 championships.

WRC2 is limited to production-based cars homologated under Group Rally2 (or previous R5) rules. There are separate specific championship titles awarded to teams, drivers and co-drivers open to the supplementary class of private entries under 30 years.

Entry into WRC3 is limited to cars that are based on production models and homologated under Group Rally3 rules, although before 2022 Group Rally2 cars were used.

Meanwhile, local organizers moved to assure the world that this year's event will proceed without a hitch. At the center of the dispute is claims of unpaid money to suppliers, service providers and volunteer allowances running into hundreds of dollars accruing from the Safari Rally since its return to the WRC.

Concern over the event escalated at the end of last week when it was reported event director Jim Kahumbura had resigned only for the decision to be rescinded hours later. Kahumbura was among those who held an audience with the president on Monday.

Porsche Syberia RS rally car is what you make when you need a Hummer that's fast

Much safari, much black, much cool.

safari rally cars for sale

Some history: The Porsche 911's first-ever race was the 1965 Monte Carlo rally, entered because Porsche's PR man at the time wanted to show how much the future icon could do. A year later, Porsche began selling an optional rally kit for the 911 that included Recaro seats, a roll bar, and adjustable Koni dampers. Porsche produced factory rally racers until the early 1970s, winning Monte Carlo three times in a row before letting privateers carry the torch so the factory could focus on campaigning in the East Africa Safari . After years of painful lessons , when Porsche took its brand-new 1978 911 SC to the safari, the 3.0-liter flat-six coupe was hours away from winning the race before damaging the suspension , demoting the car to second place. Porsche fans wanted their own replicas, and finding the new 911 to be an affordable option, the SC — built from 1978 to 1983 — went from denoting "Super Carrera" to "Safari Car."

Porsche took a big step up in with the 953 rally car. Built to win the 1984 Paris-Dakar, which it did, the 953 introduced the four-wheel-drive system Porsche would evolve for the 959 in 1985 and the 964-series 911 in 1989, as well as the now-unforgettable 911-based Rothmans livery. All of this is what's fueling today's 911 Safari Car revival around the world. Almost all of today's builds start with the so-called G Model 911s , produced from 1973 to 1989, usually focusing on the SC and the Carrera that ran from 1984 until 1989.

Fast forward to 2007 when a mysterious crew organized the TransSyberia Rally , a "sports-touring" event that stretched 4,500 miles from Moscow to the capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar. Of the 34 vehicles that entered, 25 were Porsche's purpose-built Cayenne S Transsyberia Edition .

Put this all in a pot and you have the beginnings of the car that brings us here, the Syberia RS . It's said that a German fellow by the name of Kai Burkhard wanted to buy a Humvee, but the low top speed, around 50 miles per hour, put him off. So instead, he imported a 1986 911 "in collector condition" from Japan with the idea of rebuilding it to provide almost all the off-road fun he could have had in the H1 . Burkhard tapped the Tailor Made department at German suspension designer H&R , and the two set to work creating a build like the 953 Dakar winner.

The owner's been mum on most of the details including engine revisions. We do know H&R ripped out the old suspension and mounting points and cut out the wheel arches, fabricating a custom, adjustable coilover suspension with all-new spring plates, support bearings and geometry, bolted to chassis reinforcements that can handle the shock of high-speed jumps.

Other touches include a roof rack , two additional rally lights on the hood, perforated safety bumpers, a winch tucked into the front bumper with a faceplate reading "Come Up," tie-downs on the back bumper, and an RS-style tail common on the Safari Cars above a custom, central-exit exhaust. The Syberia RS sits on a set of Hankook DynaPro Mud Terrain light truck tires , sized at 215/85 R16 akin to the 953, on Fuchs wheels. The interior features Recaro race seats up against a roll cage, a Momo steering wheel, and a high-rise gear lever that makes us wonder if a sequential transmission's been swapped in. Something about all that shiny triple-black makes this build... enticing. We're not the only ones to think so, word is that H&R has already had inquiries about making more.

If H&R doesn't, there are several other options closer to home and more on the way. Two Gemballa factions are developing off-road Porsches , the tuning house starting with a 911 turned into the Gemballa Avalance 4x4, the late Uwe Gemballa's son developing a 911-based crossover . Also in Germany, Dr. Erik Brandenburg might be coaxed to build another replica of his Martini-liveried 953 restomod that he drove to a class win in the 2007 TransSyberia Rally, complete with perforated bumpers and Hankook light truck Mud Terrains the same size as on the brand new Syberia RS.

Closer to home, several shops specialize in Safari Cars, like Kelly Moss Motorsports, Leh Keen's The Keen Project , ex-Singer builder Russell Fabrications injecting a dose of 959 into its Safari Car, and Tuthill Porsche , Tuthill winning last year's East African Safari Classic Rally with one of its cars.

Walter Röhrl walks us through the top 5 Porsche rally cars of all time

Aaron Cole

Rally may not be the first kind of racing people associate with Porsche, but the sports car maker isn't a stranger to speeding through deserts and off-road courses at break-neck speeds.

Porsche released its top five rally cars video last month, and it's hosted by legendary rally racer Walter Röhrl.

The list starts with the Paris-Dakar 953. It was the first 911 to feature all-wheel drive, and the system would later appear in the legendary 959 that never competed in Group B Rally racing, although it was designed for those standards. Drivers René Metge and Dominique Lemoyne won the Paris-Dakar rally in 1984 in the 953. The 953 may come in at the bottom of this list, but we think Röhrl really loves it as he uses it to drive from one vehicle to the next.

The first stop on that tour is the Transsyberia Cayenne S. With the 405-horsepower engine from the stock Cayenne GTS, this special Cayenne covered more than 4,400 miles in the grueling race from Moscow to the steps of Mongolia in 2007 to take the win. The next year, it claimed positions 1-6.

Coming in at No. 3 is the 924 Carrera GTS that Röhrl piloted in the 1981 German Rally Championship. The 924 Carrera GTS was the first rally car with a turbocharged engine, and reliability must not have been a problem because Röhrl completed the whole season in the car shown here.

The 911 SC Safari is No. 2 on the list, although many could argue that it deserves to be No. 1. The 911 SC Safari has spawned other 911 Safari cars since , and its iconic looks have been replicated all over the world. Porsche reinforced the body and added underbody protection to handle the rough terrain. Two 911 SC Safaris placed 2nd and 3rd, and Porsche was the only team with two cars to finish when the car raced in Kenya in 1978.

No. 1 on the list? The 911 996 GT3 Zebra that sounds like bees attacking a revving chainsaw. The car, which was raced by the husband and wife Zeltner family, uses a 6-speed manual transmission and a differential lock to put its flat-6 power to the dirt, dust, sand, and mud.

Click the link above to hear the GT3 and see Röhrl drive the 996 and 953 like he's back in his rally days. It's worth it.
