2-Hour Tri-State Snowmobile Tour

Let our experienced guides take you to some of the most amazing views in the world in one of the most exciting ways possible. For beginners or veterans, our two-hour Park City snowmobile tour takes you through a range of beautiful backcountry mountains venturing alongside aspen and pine all the way up to impressive views of Wyoming and Idaho .

3-Hour Backcountry Utah Snowmobile Tour

For those with a bit more lust for thrill, we mapped out an awesome three-hour snowmobile tour to allow riders to experience more challenges and higher elevations . There’s nothing quite like the empty canvas of fresh powder , and this longer tour offers you the best way to make some real art.

Getting Here

Don’t get stuck riding from someone’s cabin at the end of dirt roads. Drive in comfort on paved highways to our Historic Stagecoach stop, from which we take you up to endless acres of backcountry snowmobiling fun to ride, explore, and experience views that are absolutely breathtaking.

Our base camp sits at 7,500 ft. above sea level with a heated lodge . From there, we take you up through beautiful forests into Utah’s true backcountry.

Need transportation? We recommend renting a car or choosing a local Park City transportation company. We do not recommend ride sharing platforms such as Uber or Lyft, as they are not reliable for pick-up after your tour. We can help organize transportation from Park City if necessary.

Gear & Rentals

You’ll notice that we do rent gear if you forget something, including snow suits, boots, and gloves. However, we do recommend you bring your own snow gear. We also have a variety of merchandise available for purchase, including T-shirts, hoodies, caps, and beanies.

When To Book

If you’d like to book online, make sure you do so at least 48 hours ahead of time so we’re ready. You can also just give us a call to schedule at (435) 336-7669.

Snowmobile Trails and Complexes

Northern Utah’s mountains come complete with gorgeous high-mountain scenery, a lot of snow and various terrain for climbing or cruising. These perfect conditions set snowmobile enthusiasts up for winter fun. If you own a sled and are feeling adventurous, start with the U.S. Forest Service, which has six ranger districts in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest with designated snowmobiling areas. Here are a few favorites.

Mirror Lake and Mill Hollow Complexes

Located within an hour of Salt Lake City, in the high Uinta mountains, the Mirror Lake and Mill Hollow complexes sport over 150 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. Popular because of the stark scenery, with peaks rising to 13,000 feet and a lot of open play space, these complexes are becoming some of the most popular snowmobiling areas in the state. Parking fees apply.

Uintah Basin Snowmobile Complex

Hop over to the eastern Uinta Mountains, near Flaming Gorge National Recreation area, for the Uintah Basin Snowmobile Complex. This complex provides more than 75 miles of groomed trails in the state’s highest mountain range. Known for its scenic, high-mountain beauty, this complex also has a longer riding season that often stretches from November through May. Trailheads are located at Elk Meadows, East McKee, Flaming Gorge, Red Canyon Lodge and Taylor Mountain. While there you may even want to do a little ice fishing at Flaming Gorge.

Wasatch Mountain State Park

Wasatch Mountain State Park provides a spread of 23,000 acres for your snowmobiling pleasure. Want a guide to show you around and bring the gear? Wasatch Excursions is the park’s concessionaire offering two to three-hour long tours. These professionals are safety certified and focus on the connection with nature. Beginners to experts are welcome.

Have your own sled? Day passes are available and you can park at a number of trailheads. Try the Wasatch Mountain State Park campground, Cascade Springs trailhead or Mill Flats off Snake Creek. Just make sure your machines are registered.

Why Backcountry Snowmobiling Is an Unforgettable Way to Experience the Uinta Mountains

Written By Matcha

4 minute read

The Uinta Mountains are about 100 miles east of Salt Lake City and just a few minutes from Vernal in Eastern Utah. It's one of the state's top snowmobiling destinations.

Northern, Snowmobiling, Dinosaurs, Fishing, Guided Experiences, Winter Sports, Responsible Travel

Things to Know

What to pack.

While playing in the backcountry during colder months, safety comes first.

  • Make sure to pack food and water, hand warmers, an emergency blanket and a firestarter just in case you get stuck.
  • Pack your shovel and probe and know how to use them in case of an avalanche.
  • For communication, snowmobilers often use two-way radios to speak with one another during emergencies. These inexpensive communication devices are great to have on hand. Go ahead and throw your phone in because some spots are high enough to get reception.
  • Always let someone know where you're heading.

What To Wear

Dress heavier than you would while skiing because the wind-chill factor cools things down on a sled. Layer with a base layer, mid-layer and water-proof outer layer. Warm socks and boots will keep you happy as well. Warm gloves and a helmet with goggles will finish off your outfit. You’ll want to wear an avalanche transceiver and know how to use it for safety measures.

When to Visit

The Utah snowmobile season depends on snowfall and snowpack, but December through March generally provides good mountain snow.

Utah Snowmobiling Rules and Regulations

When you hit the trails, be sure to ride responsibly. This includes properly registering machines, learning and obeying OHV safety laws and rules and following trail etiquette. Learn more at stateparks.utah.gov .

Avalanche Awareness

Before entering Utah’s backcountry always check the avalanche report .

If you play in the backcountry, go to avalanche safety training, carry equipment like transceivers, shovels and probes and make sure those you are with know how to use them as well. Friends don’t let friends drive backcountry slopes without safety training.

Why Choose Uinta Recreation?

We are a 5 star rental and tour company with over 17 years perfecting our craft! We are 5 star rated on Google and Tripadvisor and our emphasis on our guests experience is paramount. A few things that sets us apart from some of our competitors.

1. Your safety is paramount to anything else! We provide every group a GPS messaging device, that allows them to communicate outside of cell service (which is common in the mountains). So no matter where on the mountain you are, we can communicate, know your location and assist if you get stuck or have a mechanical. And if the worst case happens and somebody gets hurt, there is an SOS feature that allows you to send your location and emergency info to 911. These devices are rarely used, but great to have if something goes wrong. We are the only outfitter we know of that provides these for their guests. All of our primary guides are wilderness first responder certified and have avalanche training and go out prepared with medical kits, safety and survival gear, the experience, skills and most importantly the good judgement to help avoid needing it.

2. Private trail head. All our rentals and guided tours run out of our private trail head and access hundreds of thousand of acres of Uinta National Forest public lands. These public lands boast hundreds of miles of groomed snowmobile trails and plenty of backcountry to explore. We are permitted with the Forest Service to operate and guide here. The trail head is at 8000′ elevation and accesses trails and mountains up to 11,000′. The views and terrain is stunning! So much better than a private ranch in the Park City Area!

3. Customized interactive maps! For our self guided renters, we have a custom google maps overlay that you will download onto your phone. It has the trails marked and color coordinated as well as location of the private trail head and other info. You then use the GPS on your phone to navigate and see exactly where you are at on the trail system. This system works amazing and we rarely have guests get turned around out there. We are the only outfitter that does this! So throw away that paper map and join us!

4. Unparalleled equipment! Some companies only run trail machines and some run a little of both, and most run them into the ground, but we run a great selection AND keep them up to date by purchasing new machines each year and keeping a constant rotation of newer equipment. All of our snowmobiles are electric start and fuel injected and we only run what we know to be the best, most reliable snowmobiles.

  • Chevron down Fuel, Oil and Gear

Helmets are free of charge, unless renting a premium helmet. You’ll want a pair of goggles to wear with your helmet, bring your own or rent a pair form us!

Oil is charged at a rate of $12 per rental. This covers the oil the two stroke engines burn on a typical rental.

Gear rentals include snowpants or bibs, coat, boots and goggles.  A complete package rental is $45 and includes coat, pants, boots and goggles or premium helmet.  If rented individually it is $15 for each item except goggles and premium helmets which are $10 each.  We do not rent gloves (people wipe their nose with them and they get gross) so bring your own, or we have a decent selection for sale in our office.

Fuel is based on actual usage. If riding from our private trail head, we will simply fill the snowmobiles upon your return and charge the credit card on file for the fuel. If you pick up the snowmobiles on a trailer, they will leave full of fuel and the renter is responsible to return the snowmobiles full of fuel. Premium non ethanol fuel is required. Damage agreements are meant to cover you in the event of an accident. They are not meant to cover reckless behavior. I have to say that booking a snowmobile tour with North Forty Escapes was one of my best decisions ever! Jordan made the reservation process so easy and kept in close communication with some unexpected changes. Walt was a great tour guide and expertly lead us through the beautiful area. I highly recommend this company for the quality, professionalism, and great customer service.

Highly recommend this adventure. Wonderful experience for children and adults. Our guide was very pleasant and informative about the Park City area and gave us the lay of the land. The ride went fast and was interesting. Jake our guide was excellent. Educational and fun. He is dedicated to providing an enjoyable day to everyone. Meet and greet with the dogs was fantastic!

What can I say, this trip was awesome. First time we went snowmobiling and it was worth it! My wife and I each had a snow mobile and each had a teenage daughter sitting with us. We did the 2 hour guided tour with Walt, who was great. He let us snap photos on 2 occasions and even took one of our family for us. The views were fantastic and I would definitely recommend North Forty Escapes. Enjoy!

Went skeet shooting with my wife and another couple. I'd seen this in countless movies and TV shows, but never knew how/where to try it. We all had zero or minimal experience with guns. Jordan, our instructor, was very patient with us. Felt very safe. All of us were able to hit the skeet multiple times. Extremely fun activity. Highly recommend Jordan and his North Forty Escapes. Look forward to trying some of their other activities!

Snowmobiling with Kids in Park City Utah: A Review

Snowmobiling In Park City, Utah With Kids

Park City, Utah, is known for being one of the best places in the world for snowmobiling. But what if you want to bring your kids along? We went snowmobiling in Park City with our kids for Christmas, which was the best part of the trip!

Snowmobiling With Kids In Park City Utah View Of Snowmobile

Top Tour Operators

After reading reviews of different snowmobile companies, we booked with Park City Peaks (formally Thousand Peaks), located about 40 minutes east of the Park City area.

Park City Peaks snowmobile trips offer miles of groomed trails over fifty thousand acres and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The elevation reaches 11,000 ft above sea level. We were looking for somewhere with incredible scenery, and the 5-star reviews of Park City Peaks made it a good option.

We booked directly through the Park City Peaks website about a week before, and most days and times were booked up already for Christmas week.

Here’s another top choice, bookable via Viator:

Other highly recommended options of the snowmobile tour companies are Red Pine Adventures and Summit Meadows Adventures

For rentals without tour guides, several companies offer Park City snowmobile rentals.

Park City Peaks

Snowmobiling Park City Peaks View From Mountain Top

Park City Peaks offers some of the best equipment and newer snowmobiles, and there are several different tours for the snowmobile trails. We did the shortest one, which was 2 hours, and it was the best option, as it was long enough for the kids.

We went at 9 AM as that was the only available time. If you have the chance later, the roads driving there may be in better condition from the snow melting.

The total for two snowmobiles and four people was around $550 after tax. After booking, you get an email with some waivers to fill out to save time when you get there.

It’s a 40-minute drive from Park City to the Park City Peaks snowmobiling base camp, with the last half on back roads.

There was snow the night before, and it was about 15 degrees out when we drove there. While the roads weren’t too slippery, they were covered in snow the last half of the drive, and that will add some time, mainly if you’re not used to driving in the snow.

The Google Maps directions will take you to the location of the red dot. The road ends just before you arrive, and the private property starts. You continue past the Google Maps point along the driveway, then turn left down a hill (marked by the red line). There was plenty of snow, but it was well-packed, and our 2WD rental car did OK.

They ask you to arrive 45 minutes before your time to give you enough time to get ready. If you’ve already filled out the waivers and have warm ski gear, that is probably more than you need. We only needed to find a helmet that fit and head outside.

Safety demo

As you can see from the picture, there are a lot of snowmobiles here and several groups of about eight snowmobiles left simultaneously. We met our guide outside and went over the controls. A good part of our group hadn’t ridden snowmobiles before, and they are easy enough to figure out, especially if you’ve ridden any other off-road vehicle.

There are a couple of miles of flat trails to get used to the snowmobile, then an open field to get going with some high speed. We were running a bit behind, so we skipped the field and went up the trail that goes up the mountain.

It took over an hour to reach the turnaround point in the mountains at around 11,000 feet elevation. There is a small cabin there with some porta potties, and we took a break to warm back up and check out the spectacular views.

Fc479Bae 2E79 403A A450 C1E70B2E8Fc6

At the higher points, you are around 10,000 ft elevation, and you may notice the difference when 17 Best Things to Do in Park City, Utah 2023 (Besides Skiing) you’re walking around if you’ve just arrived from somewhere at sea level elevation.

From there, it was only about 30 minutes back to the start, and you get to pick up some speed on the straight sections near the end.

Tips and safety precautions

  • Dress warm! We were almost too hot doing other outdoor activities in the same temperatures. But once you start moving on the snowmobile, you’ll need all the warmth you can get. The windshield doesn’t block much of the wind. The helmets don’t have a face shield, so bring a balaclava-type ski mask or helmet liner.
  • Under helmet balaclava masks
  • Sunglasses or ski goggles. We didn’t have ski goggles and just used sunglasses, which worked OK but fogged up with the balaclava.
  • Thin foot warmers from any outdoor store/Amazon to stick to your socks
  • Hand warmers to go inside the kid’s gloves. The drivers will have heated hand grips from the snowmobile that work great, but the kids appreciate the hand warmers .
  • Like riding any other off-road vehicle, shift your weight on the side of a hill to keep it from tipping over. Two snowmobiles in our group tipped over onto the riders after they went sideways across a hill, trying to get back onto the trail while letting another group pass. But no one got hurt or damaged any snowmobiles, and if you’re on a trail, you will be fine.
