The Secrets Of One Direction’s Wildly Successful ‘Where We Are’ Tour

The 2014 Where We Are tour remains One Direction’s greatest triumph. Celebrating the boys’ Midnight Memories album, which became the biggest-selling record of 2013 despite only being released in November of that year, the tour started in Bogotá, Colombia, in April, and concluded six months later in Miami, Florida. More than 3 million fans saw their favourite band live , and it reportedly raked in close to $300 million.

With a setlist that incorporated new hits like “Story Of My Life” and “Best Song Ever”, as well as fan favourites like “Little Things”, the tour was deliberately created as a visual feast. The stadium-only locations presented the design team with a challenge: how to ensure the energy of Harry, Liam, Louis, Niall and Zayn’s famously animated performances was not lost in the vast arenas.

Stufish CEO and set designer Ray Winkler was tasked with pulling it off. “I remember the guys having a lot of energy, and being very excited to perform to their fans,” he told Miss Vogue over email. “We had been working very closely with their creative director, Lee Lodge, over the years, so it was great to hook up with him again to design their Where We Are tour in 2014.”

When it came to moodboarding with the band and their team, Winkler said the priority was ensuring that every fan in those gargantuan stadiums felt like Louis, Harry, Liam, Zayn and Niall were singing only to them. “[We] made sure that the stage was pushed deep into the audience and the side video screens were rotated back, so that those who sat in the wings – traditionally not very good seats – could still see their favourite band and be part of the experience,” Winkler explained. “We made sure that no matter where you sat, you could always see them perform on stage.”

The set designer says every member of the band took a keen interest in the process. “They were all equally engaged and interested in the creation of this tour — after all, it was going to be the five of them that needed to make the set come alive, so they could deliver the most memorable experience for their fans. Their passion and ambition to deliver the best show possible was undeniable.” Winkler added: “All the members of One Direction were incredibly interested, and very excited about the fresh new creative approach that Lee brought to the table.”

The boys’ close involvement contributed to the fast-paced, high-energy planning phase ahead of the tour. “Ideas flew thick and fast, so our role was to understand the creative ambition and translate it into a viable touring proposition, while at the same time preserving the energy and intent of the original idea,” he said. “Stufish played an integral part in translating this vision into a vibrant and impactful design that reflected the band’s aspirations and ambitions of being the world’s greatest boy band.” Job done then.

The result was a bold, bright, electrifying production, picked out in a colour palette that reflected the energy of the band. Pyrotechnics were employed for additional drama, with a catwalk-style promenade jutting into the crowd for an intimate touch.

Of course, a key part of the production’s success was the excitement of the fans, who purchased their tickets for the sell-out tour just shy of a year in advance. “The energy that One Direction managed to generate from their fans in the stadium really inspired us to create an experience that their fans would never forget, and to push the boundaries of stage design for a pop concert,” Winkler says.

“The set was quite complex, with multiple entrances and exits connecting to multiple ramps and stairs. You can imagine some of the comedy of trying to choreograph the five band members on a stage terrain that was anything other than flat,” Winkler recalled. “The opportunity to get lost made for some funny moments of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Six years on, Ray clearly still has fond memories of his days working with One Direction boys. “My favourite memory of the tour was being surrounded by so much talent, dedicated to delivering the best show ever. One Direction was such an exciting band to work with, and it was a great privilege to be part of their journey and see them grow creatively.”

Seven Facts About One Direction’s ‘Where We Are’ Stadium Tour

Keep your weekends full of the coolest things to do around boston with our weekly weekender newsletter..

one direction 'where we are' tour

Photo via One Direction Official Facebook

The ultimate boy band weekend is upon us, folks. Gillette Stadium is hosting One Direction for three consecutive nights on August 7, 8, and 9, and dads are going to have a great time driving their preteens out to Foxboro. While nobody is more excited than band member Niall Horan and his red socks (get it?), those of you going should know what you’re up against.

Remember: Directioners don’t mess around. That’s what makes them beautiful.

1. “Where We Are” is battling Jay and Bey’s “ On The Run ” for a big second place ranking.  According to Forbes , One Direction is expected to break $314 million in gross sales for their 30+ stops—making just under $5 million per show. “On The Run” is projecting $100 million for their 20 stops, tallying at exactly $5 million per show. This puts 1D neck and neck with Jay and Bey for second place ranking in largest sales per show ever , right behind U2’s “360” tour. May the best divas win.

2. The majority of the male restrooms were turned into ladies’ rooms at their Met Life Stadium shows.  It makes sense. Sorry, bros.

Are you a guy at a One Direction concert?? https://t.co/ih37cMFYwp — Alex Goldschmidt (@alexandergold) August 4, 2014

3. Ticket prices for “Where We Are” are significantly less than the band’s 2013 “Take Me Home” tour.   Forbes also reported that the average price for “Where We Are” in the secondary market (Stubhub, etc.) is $174—62 percent less than last year’s $463 average for the “Take Me Home” tour. The cheapest ticket for a fan in Boston at Xfinity Center was $107 last year (literally for a lawn seat ). This year, fans could get Gillette tickets for $8.

4. Harry Styles asked the fiancé of a crew member to run away with him via a video message .  Tash Gershfield’s husband James played this video message at their wedding where Styles says dreamy things like, “It’s not too late,” and  “You don’t have to go through with this.” But clearly Tash Gershfield failed to understand the gravity of the situation because she did not, in fact, choose to run away with Harry Styles.

5. “Where We Are” is being made into a concert film. One Direction released the first trailer  a few weeks ago for One Direction: Where We Are , which will hit theaters on October 11. The movie will feature 75 minutes of concert performances along with 15 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage and exclusive interviews. One Direction’s first docu-concert film This Is Us broke $68 million in the box office worldwide last summer.

6. The MBTA is running a special commuter rail “concert” train to Foxboro Station on Saturday only. The train departs from South Station at 3:45 p.m., Back Bay Station at 3:50 p.m., Dedham Corporate Station at 4:10 p.m., and arrives at the stadium by 4:50 p.m. How’s that for defeating the heinous three-hour traffic jam?

7. 1D fans are crazy as ever. Welcome to sociopath nation.

One Direction is an English-Irish pop band that was formed in 2010 by Simon Cowell on the British television show “The X Factor”. The group consists of members: Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson.

After each member of One Direction individually auditioned for the 2010 series of the “The X Factor”, the boys were grouped together by talent scout Simon Cowell to form the band One Direction. While the band failed to win the British talent show, the boys won a lot of fans and did secure third place on the show. More impressive, though, is that the boys went on to win the hearts of teenage girls all over the world soon after the show’s end.

One Direction is responsible for causing a second-wave British pop invasion in the US after their hit singles “What Makes You Beautiful", "Live While We're Young" and "Story of My Life" all became top 10 singles on the US album charts. One Direction also holds the record for being the first band to have each of their first three albums, “Up All Night”, “Take Me Home” and “Midnight Memories”, debut at number one on the US Billboard chart.

One Direction’s sudden and meteoric rise to fame has been the result of an extensive social media following. The band is one of the first to have achieved such extensive fame solely through the use of online social media platforms. This, combined with each of the boy’s fun loving yet individualistic image has breathed new life into the boy band pop genre and built an empire worth over $50 million.

The band has toured extensively across the globe, with their songs’ energetic choruses and the boys’ cheeky stage presences constantly winning more and more devoted fans. With further material always in the works, it seems that One Direction’s star will continue to rise for some time to come.

Live reviews

One Direction's performance was spectacular. Even though One Direction was the main event, their opening performances were a great hit. Jamie Scott and 5 Seconds of Summer really know how to please a crowd, especially when they are all so good looking. The stage was massive and had many great features including moving parts, lights, confetti, and two huge HD screens so that every part of the audience is able to see the boys clearly at all times. One Direction came out with so much energy and enthusiasm, and because it was Niall's birthday, he came out with balloons attached to him while playing the guitar and singing.

The boys interacted with the fans and even asked if it was anyone's birthday. They sang like angels and even showed off some dance moves. The boys had a great set list for their concert, with most of their songs being the more recent ones. One Direction looked great, which isn't a surprise, because they always look fabulous. One Direction moved around the stage and had a nice graphic background at all times, they even had picture lyrics for a song. The boys introduced their band and each member played a little bit of a song, and the boys jumped in, as well as the audience and sang along.

Just when you thought that the best night of your life was over, One Direction came back out for their encore to sing some of their most popular songs. The encore was massive and left you amazed. There were fireworks here and there throughout the show, but the encore had a so many, which made for great pictures. Each of the boys said their goodbyes and told the audience to stay safe while going home.

One Direction has grown so much and have become such a big hit all around the globe. The boys are always thanking their fans for all their support and everything that they've done to help them with their career. One Direction will continue to become bigger, especially with their amazing songs and albums, performances, and their dedication to their fans.

Don't be surprised if you lose your voice the next day from screaming out their names and singing their songs. Be sure to take lots of pictures and videos, because you will want to relive your One Direction concert experience forever. One Direction really knows how to give an amazing performance. Look out for Harry, Niall, Louis, Liam, and Zayn, because they are taking the world by storm.

One Direction was truly one of the best concerts I've been to and I truly mean it. I say it a lot, but I mean it this time. When Zayn announced his departure, I was not sure if One Direction would sound the same without him, but they pulled it off! I saw them at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara and the crowd was pumped and ready for the show to begin.

I was standing in the merchandise line while their opening act Icona Pop came on and I watched them from the TV's spread throughout the stadium. Although I missed half of their set, the last few songs were catchy and got me dancing. They delivered a great set and it got me excited for One Direction. Between the two sets, there was about a 20 minute in between.

When it was One Direction's turn to come out on stage, there was a little video that played before the boys came out themselves. Then, smoke comes out from the stage and the boys come out with fireworks coming out from the stage. The arena literally erupts with screaming and they begin their set with their song "Clouds". They had 25 songs in their whole setlist and they were all completely energetic throughout the whole concert. The fans had a project where we held up papers during You and I (it was supposed to be during Fireproof but they didn't have that song on their setlist) that says "Nobody saves me baby the way you do" with a picture of one of the boys with angel wings. My mom and aunt enjoyed the whole concert by the look of it and so were other parents/adults. There were people of all ages at the concert and it seemed that everyone enjoyed it.

One Direction's encore consisted of "You and I", "Act My Age", "Little White Lies" and their last song "Best Song Ever". I was so sad that the concert actually ended because it felt so surreal.

I would recommend going to a One Direction, regardless if you are a die hard fan or not because I am sure you will have a great time. Their singing was great, they kept me and my family entertained, and overall, they're angels. I will never forget this concert and I hope the boys continue to make people this happy.

One Direction took me to a different world last night! Their huge stage, fun props and great personalities made for an unforgettable night!

Their opening act, 5 Seconds of Summer, were perfect for getting the crowd pumped and ready! Their rock inspired performance was a great way to start the night, it made you want to sing at the top of your lungs and dance till you couldn't dance any longer. After 5 SOS had finished rocking the stage, we jammed out to great music. Even the intermission was a blast and the crowd danced and sang along to the fun, upbeat music!

Up next was the anticipated performance from the boys of 1D! You could feel the energy in the roar of the crowd and couldn't help but join and scream like a little girl! When the boys came on, it was like nothing I've ever experienced, the crowd went wild and you could feel the energy and excitement through your whole body! Even the stadium shook in excitement with us. They came out with a bang, singing a song from their new album, "Midnight Memories". The upbeat, rock felt song was a perfect intoduction to a spectacular show!

I was completely captivated through out the entire performance! There was not a single dull moment. The boys did an excellent job with transitioning from song to song and keeping the crowd pumped. Not only did they keep the crowd engaged in the show but they made it personal by interacting with the crowd by making jokes and talking to us!

I would recomend everyone to go and see One Direction! Fan or not you will enjoy the high energy performance and the fun stage and props! So if you're on the fence about going, go! You won't regret it!

One direction. They were excellent. Not only them but even the opening act. I haven't been to a stadium concert since green day 2010. One direction was very personal to the crowd "SHOUT OUT TO WILL FOR BEING A GOOD BROTHER!" I remember Harry styles saying. Then he sang Brianna happy birthday. She cried so hard.

I will say a downer is being in the upper stands for seating in the Cardinals arena. It's understandable they can't just come out and sing to our faces but it's unfortunate they don't try. Lol. The fact they really are appreciative of the fans and of the support is what really brings them down to earth. Some might think "no they're be too thankful it's annoying they're doing it for cheers and whatever!" No. They are really thankful. How often do you hear of an X Factor group who didn't even win be known across the globe? At least I don't hear it too often.

These boys whether the know it or not are really good. Good at heart and good at what they do. If I could meet them it would be an honor. I wouldn't cry and scream like most. But I'd take it to heart to know that I met LEGITABLY AWESOME people.

Even if they break up as a singing group they'll be legends. They really rocked it last night and same with 5SOS. I don't even know all their names (EXCELT LUKE! I like luke:) ) but I know their music and it rocks hard. They sound so good live. They make the perfect team, 1D and 5SOS. It was a moment to live for. My first 1D concert and my sister's first concert concert. She's only twelve and she's been dying to see one direction. So thank you ALL for your existence.

OMG I had the best time at the One Direction concert!!! It was like all my dreams were coming true!!! My experience before the concert started was crazy!!! So I went with my best friend to the concert and we spend like 10 min trying to find out seats because this time we were in the 100's and not the 200's so when we asked the usher where are seats were he said row five, so my friend thought he meant five rows from the top!!! So probably ten minutes before Icona Pop preformed, the usher came to us with two other girls and told us we were in the wrong seats, so we got nervous because we were like "shit we have to move back" and we already thought that we were so close!!! So the usher asked for our tickets and after he read them, he's like "Your seats are down there in row five"!!!! After that me and my friend flipped out and I almost fainted because I love them so much and it was a dream come true to go to this concert!!! My family doesn't have much money so when my friend found out that they were going on tour again, she bought me the tickets for my birthday!!!! So I wouldn't of been there if it wasn't for her!!! Then we made a promise to each other that for the next concert we were going to do whatever it takes to get tickets to the meet and greet and front row tickets!!! So we are going to be holding some fundraiser to help pay for the tickets because I would do anything for a chance to meet Louis Tomlinson!!!! But thank you One Direction for changing my life around!!! I definitely wouldn't be in this place in my life right now if it wasn't for you guys!!! Luv ya!!!

So this was my fourth time seeing One Direction live and oh it was beautiful. I feel like every time I see them live they get better and better. My seats were right next to the runway and sound booth so I had a perfect view of the whole stage. Since it was outside the acoustics were perfect and you can hear everything even though there were 90,000 something girls screaming their heads off.

Every time the boys played a song you can just feel the floor shake and the bass just vibrate through your body. Surprisingly the boys were very interactive with the audience even though their were so many girls in the crowd freaking out for their attention, me being one of them.Zayn waved at me, then Harry and Liam basically hip thrusted in my direction.

These boys really know how to work the stage they kept running up and down and just were idiots and on top of that their voices were on point. They sound way better live then they do on their own CD. It was honestly the best show I've ever seen a band give.

On top of their amazing voices and hip thrusting they had the coolest graphics and stage design I've ever seen. The stage just looks like a big playground basically. I'm so happy I got to see them again and have such amazing seats because it was one of their best shows. They all had smile on their faces, especially Niall since it was his birthday, you can just tell these boys love what they do.

I can't wait till next year because I'm defiantly am going again. These boys don't disappoint!

When I heard One Direction's new album Four in November 2014, I knew it would be an amazing album to hear live. I asked for tickets for Christmas and I got them! I was told my seats were amazing but i never saw them until the day of the show. They were the closest I've ever been to my favorite celebrity.

When we got there (my concert was at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) there were a lot of people but we still stood in line to get shirts and stuff. When we were finally down to our field seating to watch the opening act I had a heart attack. We were so close to the stage! We were maybe twenty feet away and I was on the end seat. It made for some great pictures!

The opening act was Icona Pop. I only knew two of the songs but I still enjoyed it and the dancers were fantastic. During the opening act, we all went to the bathroom and made new friends with the people around us.

Finally the concert started. I'd never been more excited in my life. I told myself I wouldn't cry but the second I heard Harry Styles busting out his first note in clouds it was like Niagara Falls. The entire rest of the show was amazing even without Zayn. There were fireworks and lasers and all that jazz. I made eye contact with Louis and Harry a few times and Liam waved to me. When Harry threw his water bottle, we all got splashed. This goes down as the best night of my life so far.

When I first knew One Direction coming to Singapore for tour, I was super excited for it, but then, for poly students, that week is a exam week, so unfortunately I couldn't buy the ticket. It was damn sad, I even search for the seats and prices. Just one week before the concert, I received an email from spots hub merchandise manager, Erny, that she is giving away 7 pair of free pair One Direction, On The Road Again Tour ticket, as I volunteer for sea games merchandise. I was lucky that I was able to get the free pair of One Direction ticket by replying the Machandise Manger's email ASAP after I received. Though the seat was right at the back($88 seat), being able to be there was already fortunate enough. Though couldn't see them clearly, as we were far back behind from stage, being able to see them from the big screen and listen to their beautiful voice was my biggest joy. Thank you One Direction for coming to Singapore, thank you sports hub for the tickets, I will never regret going to their concert!!! I wish they will be able to come Singapore again, and I will definitely buy the hot seat. :)

Can I just say OH MY FUXKING GOD! It was probably the best night of my life. I thought I wouldn't enjoy it as much since zayn wasn't there. But I was so wrong! They started the show off with Clouds and when they entered there were fireworks! I was just like. Harry, Niall, Liam, Louis obviously looked bomb af. I really couldn't believe they were right there in front of me. They played some of my favourite songs! Kiss you, Midnight Memories, Little Black Dress, Little White Lies, Through The Dark, Girl Almighty, Steal My Girl, You and I, Act My Age, No Control and ended with Best Song Ever. Along with the songs, they didn't leave any attempt behind of making us laugh and enjoy ourselves. Niall made a new rap about Vancity Chick, Van VanCity Chick hehe. Also Harry made us moan like ughh. OHHHHH YEAHHH And also I can't forget about a sign that said "NIALL HAS MORE FANS THAN NAUGHTY BOY HAS FANS" And Liam read it and said that it made his night. We heard Niall's Classic laugh after reading that sign. All in all it was the best day of my life and I hope they'll come back soon. I love them so much

My concert in Baltimore was totally awesome! I first got my merch, which was a white t-shirt with the dates on the back, and the program. I next waited for the gates to open, and I think I saw their cars. Someone waved, and their were microphones. I got in and walked up to my section(539). I then got some food and got to my seats. I went with my Aunt, by the way. We ate while waiting, and they played commercials and music videos. Icona Pop came on, and they were really good. We waited some more, and 1D finally came on. My seats were in the stands in front of the stage, so I got a really good view. Niall called us sexy, and a fan baked Harry cookies. They were gone by the end of the show. I sang along to every song, and screamed my heart out. We even made Liam feel better, as he was a bit ill. Liam and Louis had a water fight, the whole show was amazing. It was a bit hectic getting out though, but I was home by 2:00 AM. It was a great show. It was my 2nd concert, the first being TMH in Hershey. I will remember it for years to come!

On the Road Again Tour

  • View history

The On The Road Again Tour (also referred to as OTRA or OTRAT ) is One Direction 's fourth headlining tour. It was announced on May 19, 2014 and began on February 7, 2015. It concluded on October 31, 2015.

In April 2015, Billboard [1] announced the OTRA Tour was the top grossing Hot Tour after the completion of the first leg. During that leg, the tour garnered $62 million in ticket sales. In July 2015, Billboard announced in their Midyear Touring Report that OTRA was again the top grossing tour of 2015, bringing in $81 million dollars, around $40 million more than runners-up The Foo Fighters. [2] In October 2015, Billboard reported OTRA's North American leg had earned the band $80.6 million, bringing the entire tour's total earnings to $188 million. [3] In January 2016, Pollstarpro.com announced it was the top earning tour of 2015 with $210.2 million earned and 2,364,390 tickets sold. [4]

It was Zayn Malik 's final tour with the band, he exited the group in March, shortly before the first leg was completed.

Background [ ]

The tour was announced on May 19, 2014 on Twitter [5] and Facebook. The dates for the first 19 shows - which were in in Australia, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Philippines, Indonesia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates - were released ranging from early February till the end of April. 23 shows in Europe and the USA were later added from early June until early September. A following 6 Canadian dates were added. Due to the high demand for tickets, numerous extra shows were added.

Announcements [ ]

A video was released on May 10, 2014 from the boys, announcing that they'd be playing in the Philippines for one show in Manila on March 21, 2015 [6] .

Another video was released on May 18, 2014 where the boys announced they would be performing live in South Africa for the "very first time next year" on March 28th, 29th and April 1, 2015 in 2 different stadiums [7] .

The Australian shows were announced during an interview on the Australian breakfast tv show "Today" [8] . Niall revealed they'd be playing shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth in stadiums where some of the biggest sporting teams had also played.

The Singapore announcement video was released on May 19, 2014 revealing the date and location of the concert: March 11th and the "New National Stadium", respectively [9] .

The Dubai announcement video was also released on May 19th and consists of the boys telling fans the date of the show (April 5, 2015) and to "keep up with up and all the news about our first ever Dubai show by liking One Direction Dubai on Facebook" [10] .

The Japan announcement video was also released on May 19th, and in it they revealed they would be in Japan in February 2015 and expressed how "amazing it was last time" and that they "can't wait to be there again" [11] . In the Thailand announcement video, which was also released on May 19th, they confirmed they would "finally" be playing in Bangkok in Rajamangala Stadium on March 14th [12] .

In the Indonesia announcement, also released on May 19th, they said that they "can't wait to see you" and revealed the date (Wednesday, March 25, 2015) and the venue (Stadium Utama Gelora Bung Karno [13] ). Hong Kong was also announced on May 19th. In the video, Harry said that "we cannot wait to come and see you" and revealed the date to be March 18, 2015 [14] .

On October 23, 2014, they tweeted [15] , alongside the reminder of a 5th clip from the " Steal My Girl " video, that they had a special announcement" at 4pm. The tweet [16] at 4pm revealed that they had released European and USA dates to the previously announced dates. On October 24th they released another set of dates for Canada [17] .

Developments [ ]

The tour setup did not significantly change after Zayn 's departure in March. In the week before his official exit from the group, after being signed off for stress, the band left a space for him in many of their group set-ups, most notably in their formation during Harry's solo for " What Makes You Beautiful ". During one performance, Liam placed his hand in the space where Zayn would usually be standing. After Malik's official exit, the group changed the formation several times, standing arm in arm for one performance, and back to back for another.

In the shows immediately after Zayn's departure, fans began bringing signs saying "Til The End" to shows, for the group to see. Liam acknowledged the signs during the Dubai April 4 show saying "Til the end, everybody. We are One Direction and we are here to stay". [18]

On May 28, 2015, Niall confirmed on Twitter that the setlist had been changed for the European and North American legs, in order to feature more songs from Four . [19]

On June 1, 2015, it was announced that the OTRA Tour would be presented in the USA by the Honda Civic Tour [20] and that Swedish duo Icona Pop would be the support act.

On June 13, " No Control " and " 18 " were officially added to the setlist. On July 9, " Spaces " and " Act My Age " were officially added to the setlist, while " Strong " was removed. On July 15, "Spaces" was removed from the setlist.

On July 21, " Fireproof " was officially added to the setlist.  The concert was marred slightly by claims from online fans that the crowd appeared not lively enough. Liam tweeted "TBH (to be honest), I think every crowd we sing to is the loudest...I thought that was a good thing that worldwide you're the best fans?  Don't you? Never mind, thanks Edmonton, you were aces" in response to a meme referencing the claims.

On July 27 Honda Civic uploaded the first part of a tour diary video to One Direction's official YouTube page. On September 4, part 2 was uploaded. On October 8, part 3 was uploaded.

On July 31st less than 24 hours after its official release, " Drag Me Down " was officially added to the setlist. The band thanked fans for the overwhelming success the single garnered.

From the beginning of the UK leg, the setlist order was completely changed and " Infinity " was partially performed acoustically on September 24, after the band encountered technical difficulties during " Night Changes ". Ed Sheeran's protege Jamie Lawson and American rock band Augustana were support acts.

On October 16, " Perfect " was officially added to the setlist, replacing " Diana ".

On October 20, the Belfast concert was cancelled after Liam became too ill to perform. The cancellation was made at the last minute, after the support act had finished performing. Harry, Louis and Niall all tweeted shortly afterward, apologizing.

During the final concert in Sheffield, the band played " Act My Age " several times in a row while their family and staff danced in the front row. Liam 's dad led a conga line through the crowd. As the show was ending, Harry and Louis hugged, marking their first public or on stage interaction in years.

How Milwaukee Brewers' American Family Field became one of country's top concert stadiums

stadium tour one direction

In 2023, American Family Field had its biggest year ever for concerts — and it was one of the top-grossing stadiums for concerts in the world.

It may be the new normal.

After hosting four concerts last year — including the first two-night stadium run ever in Milwaukee, with Morgan Wallen, and shows with George Strait and Pink that both broke attendance records — American Family Field is ready to host four more in 2024.

The first two are April 12 and 13, the stadium tour kickoff for country superstar Luke Combs. Kenny Chesney returns in June, this time with Zac Brown Band ; and Green Day is coming in August with the Smashing Pumpkins.

Going forward, depending on routing and the teams' schedule, the Brewers could book four to six major tours a year, predicted Jason Hartlund, who oversees concerts at the stadium as executive vice president — chief commercial officer for the Brewers.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

“We’ve really bent over backwards for artists and production teams to be as hospitable and as easy a process (to stage a concert) as possible,” Hartlund said. “That reputation is starting to get out into the marketplace. It’s helped us.”

Last year, it helped 43,000-seat American Family Field become the 19th top-grossing stadium for concerts in the United States, and 35th in the world, according to concert trade magazine Pollstar, ranking prominently among football stadiums with larger seating capacities. The stadium sold 178,107 concert tickets, collectively grossing $35.4 million.

It's a remarkable development for a 23-year-old stadium in a market Milwaukee's size, especially since there are two stadiums in must-play Chicago — the Cubs' Wrigley Field and the Bears' home field (for now), Soldier Field — that routinely draw Milwaukee fans for shows.

But between the growth of the stadium tour sector of the concert industry — and the $500 million stadium funding bill signed into law by Gov. Tony Evers last December — American Family Field's future as a live music destination is promising.

"Philosophically, when we enter into an agreement with a sports team or stadium, we want to know that they want to be good partners," said Charlie Goldstone, co-president of Live Nation-backed Madison promoter FPC Live, which handled the Pink and Wallen concerts last year and is promoting Green Day's this year.

"It's more than just financial. Will they help promote the shows? Will the team be amenable to uses of the field and the locker rooms? When an artist gets there will they feel welcome? … With the Brewers, the answer is always yes."

Years with few concerts at the Milwaukee Brewers' ballpark

For much of the stadium's existence, a big concert each year wasn't a guarantee. After it opened in 2001, Miller Park (renamed American Family Field in 2021) nabbed a few tours its first few years, including Strait, *NSYNC and Bruce Springsteen.

But after 2003, the stadium went a decade without hosting tours, although there were some special events, including Farm Aid in 2010, and birthday bashes for Harley-Davidson and Miller Brewing.

Then in 2013, Kenny Chesney headlined a stadium tour stop at Miller Park for the first time, the beginning of what's become a fruitful relationship with one of the stadium's most reliable promoters, the Messina Touring Group.

In addition to Chesney's headlining shows at the Brewers ballpark in 2016, 2018, 2022 and now this year, Messina brought Ed Sheeran to the stadium in 2018. The promoter also was responsible for Eric Church's second stadium-headlining show ever in 2022, and for the Strait show last year — one of only eight dates the country legend did in 2023 with Chris Stapleton.

In an interview with the Journal Sentinel last year, Louis Messina, head of AEG-backed Messina Touring Group, said doing shows at the stadium was "comfortable" and that the venue itself was "fan-friendly."

"Some stadiums, it's like pulling teeth to do a show there. In Milwaukee, it's not like that," Messina said. "From the top with management all the way down to the groundskeepers, they work with us and make it easy for us to produce shows."

"We're not just another tenant in the building. … That's really important, not only to me and the artists but to my team, box office people, production people — everybody."

After Chesney broke the tour drought, Live Nation, the world's largest concert promoter, put Paul McCartney and One Direction shows in the stadium, in 2013 and 2015.

A gamechanger for Wisconsin concerts in 2018

Then in 2018, Live Nation became a majority stakeholder of long-running Madison promoter Frank Productions, parent to FPC Live — and the Brewers took notice.

"The ballpark said they wanted to be in business, and it opened up a new level of shows that were not coming to the state," FPC Live co-president Scott Leslie said. By that time, touring was a rapidly growing business at other ballparks, Leslie noted, including Wrigley Field and Fenway Park in Boston.

"The Brewers saw that this was being done successfully among their peers, so why not them?" Leslie said.

FPC Live brought the only Billy Joel Midwestern concert of 2019 to American Family Field, and a Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett package to the ballpark in 2022. Aside from when the pandemic derailed the touring industry for most of 2020 and much of 2021, the ballpark has hosted at least one stadium tour every year since 2018, and nearly all of them have been at capacity.

"Success breeds success," Hartlund said. "Where artists may have been hesitant to come to the Milwaukee market in the past, we have a catalog of success that tours can play Chicago and Milwaukee. … And because we have had success with shows in the past people are getting more comfortable moving off weekends."

Last year's Pink show at American Family Field, for instance, was on a Monday — and it stopped at Wrigley Field the prior Saturday. But the Milwaukee date was still a smash, with Pink breaking an attendance record at the stadium, performing for 46,644 people.

Leslie suggests that Pink's past success in the market — her Fiserv Forum show in 2019 was the top-grossing concert at the arena that year — likely gave her team more confidence to book a show in the city's biggest venue.

"With Fiserv Forum, there's a brand-new arena with a high volume of really amazing shows that let the market open up in a bigger way," FPC Live's Goldstone said.

The $524 million Milwaukee Bucks arena opened in 2018, bringing more shows nearly every year than the Bradley Center ever did during a single year. And the American Family Insurance Amphitheater at Maier Festival Park has seen a surge of shows, too, following a $51.3 million renovation, reaching its highest volume since 2004. And even though the amphitheater has nabbed some tour dates routed through other stadiums, Hartlund suggests their booking ability has benefited.

"The rising tide lifts all ships," Hartlund said. "Having a new arena is great for the city, having a revamped American Family Insurance Amphitheater at Summerfest is fantastic. The more shows we put in here, the better."

Stadium concert tours are surging around the world

Hartlund says the Brewers have been more aggressive about concert bookings coming out of the pandemic, driven not just by a desire to grow non-baseball revenue, but a growing comfort that field conditions won't be affected by more events.

And there are significantly more events at stadiums around the globe, which the Brewers are also benefiting from. Grosses from the world’s top 100 stadiums for concerts were up 35% in 2023 to $3.62 billion, according to Pollstar. The number of tickets sold for those tours also increased 22.2% to 29.1 million.

Since touring resumed after the pandemic, Dave Brooks, senior director of live and touring for Billboard, estimates that at least an artist or two in different genres, including country, pop and Latin music, have been able to rise up to the stadium level every year, while some artists have experimented with packages to help fill stadium seats, like Chesney is doing with Zac Brown Band and Green Day with the Pumpkins.

"The financial incentives are obvious," Brooks said. "You can get a much larger audience for the fraction of the price it costs you to do multiple arena shows. The costs are somewhat higher for a stadium concert than an arena show, but the increase in attendance is like double depending on how big the stadium is, and you can make almost double the money."

Promoters also like the "huge consumer marketing databases" that MLB and NFL teams have from selling tickets to their games to help them sell shows, Brooks continued, and fans have shown with their wallets that they don't mind the stadium concert experience.

"The use of video boards and technology makes the concert feel more intimate," Brooks said of more recent stadium tours.

New stadium developments could lead to more concerts

Hartlund is hopeful that the Brewers' new centerfield scoreboard — one of the largest in Major League Baseball — will appeal to some promoters. As of the Journal Sentinel interview, he was unsure if any tours would use the scoreboard this year, but Strait and Stapleton did last year.

And while the team's new QR code-based parking payment system was temporarily suspended due to technical issues for opening day — and will not be in operation for the Combs shows — Hartlund said that, when it's up and running, it will cut down on backups into the ballpark. Traffic into the park has triggered some backlash in the past, most notably for Sheeran's show in 2018, prompting the team to issue an apology.

And then there's the $500 million public-funding plan for the ballpark to support long-term renovations and improvements, which will include "winterizing" the venue so it could operate beyond its typical April-to-October timeframe.

The stadium's retractable roof has already been an asset — Hartlund suggests it was a key reason why Combs opted to kick off the tour there this year — but following renovations, American Family Field theoretically could host concerts in March or November.

And yes, some stadium tours have been routed through the Midwest in November; Stapleton and Strait played the indoor U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis in November 2021, and Joel played the NFL stadium with Stevie Nicks last November.

"Promoters are aware of the plan for that to take place," Hartlund said, although a definitive timeline has yet to be set. "It's all about the comfort levels for the artist and the fans. If the building is winterized and heated to appropriate levels, it's no different from an arena show in November or March."

New York/New Jersey's politics may have been a factor

One topic that may have factored into FIFA's decision to award the final to MetLife Stadium over AT&T Stadium is the varying political climates in New Jersey, New York and Texas. In short, the two sides could not be more ideologically different or on opposite ends of the political spectrum.

In recent months, one of the biggest political tensions between New York and Texas has been the ongoing migrant crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border. There are also differences when it comes to gun reform, reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ rights. New Jersey has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation.

Texas is the largest state to ban nearly all abortions after the 2022 overturn of Roe v. Wade. There’s also the question of LGBTQ+ rights, with the Human Rights Campaign saying Texas is responsible for more than 20 percent of the more than 500 anti-LGTBQ+ bills last year across the country.

These issues may seem far removed from soccer, but human rights issues were widely debated and reported on during the 2022 men’s World Cup in Qatar and continue to be contentious topics as global investment in soccer continues to grow.

Who will pay to host the World Cup final at MetLife?

Hosting a World Cup is not cheap and tensions usually rise when it comes down to who will cover that bill. Organizers can tap into public funding, set up sponsorships, or rely on fundraising to get by. In the case of New Jersey and New York, this becomes even more complicated.

For MetLife Stadium, organizers can request funding distributed by the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority. The money is allocated from $7.5million in funding appropriated from the state budget “for international events, improvements and sporting attractions,” according to a resolution approving the spending.

Another benefit for New Jersey could also be the ability to work closely with other host cities along the East Coast. Meg Kane, the host city executive for Philadelphia 2026, told The Athletic that Philadelphia, New Jersey/New York, Boston and even Toronto have aligned to explore options around transportation, security and even cost sharing.

MetLife Stadium's public transit

One of the biggest priorities for World Cup organizers was preparing for avoidable transportation woes. Shuffling millions of people in and out of a region is no easy feat and local authorities have already started planning for ways to be best prepared.

If the assumption is that most fans will stay in the city and travel to games, that means New York City needs to set up a system that allows them to travel seamlessly. At past men’s World Cups, ticketed fans were offered free public transport to games. It’s safe to assume FIFA expects the same in 2026.

NYC is accustomed to temporarily increasing transport options at MetLife Stadium for major events. relying on a special train service that connects Secaucus Junction with the Meadowlands Rail Station at the stadium. Though easy to use, the service hasn’t always been perfect.

Locals may remember some high-profile transit flops: during the 2014 Super Bowl, thousands were stranded for hours trying to get home. A similar mess happened in 2019 with WrestleMania. Though more recently, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour went off without a hitch for three shows over one holiday weekend.

Pros and cons of MetLife Stadium as final host

MetLife Stadium opened in 2009, has a capacity of 82,500 and is an open-air stadium. It usually has a turf pitch for NFL matches but will be converted to grass for World Cup games to meet FIFA’s standards.

If you ask The Athletic ’s NFL writers, MetLife doesn't offer a great stadium experience. It doesn't have as many bells and whistles as some of the league's other relatively new arenas, and offers less to do in the immediate surrounding area — unless you consider the American Dream mega-mall next door.

Located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, MetLife is just a short drive from New York City.

Supporters of the New York/New Jersey bid argued NYC was the obvious choice to host the final because of the city’s global heritage, with landmarks like Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty nearby. It offers fans a built-in tourist attraction and the final will take place just a few weeks after the country’s 250th celebration of July 4th. Furthermore, the city is arguably in the most important media market in the world.

NJ governor on legacy of hosting World Cup final

NJ governor on legacy of hosting World Cup final

Continuing with The Athletic 's discussion with NJ governor Phil Murphy, on what it was like dealing with rumors that Dallas would be awarded the final: "We kept our head down. We didn't get sucked into the rumor mill. Again, great relationship, partnership between New Jersey and New York City. We just sort of focused on our work, kept, as they say, our eyes on the prize, sort of shut the noise out, and it turned out that was probably a winning formula.

"I give Dallas a lot of credit. I mean, they've got a beautiful stadium. Great ownership. I happen to know the Jones family. They're fine people. They're gonna do a great job down there. But we're thrilled that we got the final in New York, New Jersey."

On what he's looking forward to most about hosting the final: "Yeah, I mean, just you're saying that gives me chills.

"It's not just the game. I know this is important for FIFA. I think it's the buildup to the game, and then the legacy that it will leave behind on the decades to come. To my way of thinking, that's the real prize here. The pitches that will get built. The passion for the game that will rise. The little kid, girl or boy, who might not have taken a second look at soccer or football, depending on where you're from, and they're now going to get entranced by the game, by the beautiful game.

"I think it's the broader picture. I mean, the game itself. I believe, if my math is right, we will host eight games, which is a big deal in and of itself, and we're honored by that. But, to me, it's the broader legacy element of this that's the most important part."

NJ governor 'elated' to host World Cup final

The Athletic spoke to New Jersey governor Phil Murphy after the state landed the right to host the 2026 World Cup final, starting with his initial reaction to the news: "Just elated. I knew we had a very good shot, but you just never know until the words come out of Gianni’s mouth. But we had about 500 people at a watch party at MetLife – and just elated beyond words.

"Eric Adams deserves a lot of credit here, the mayor of New York City. We have a great partnership. We're a soccer hotbed. We are as diverse as any region, not just in the country, but in the world. And that is just so consistent with FIFA’s values, and I can't say enough good things about FIFA and the relationship we have with them. And it's just a huge deal – not just for the game itself but leading up to it, and I think we'll build a legacy that will last for many decades to come.”

On whether he knew before the announcement that they would get the final: "We did not know, and the only inkling we got – we felt like we were in it. So, we knew we were competitive. The only, the real inkling came – because we thought Dallas was the main competitor, and they're gonna get a lot of games there and they'll do a great job.

"But they were the only host city to get three games in those knockout rounds, and that gave me the sense that, because that, they probably – and this was five minutes before Gianni said it, so it’s not like I had a lot of advanced notice. But I started a war game in my mind that that probably meant that they weren't going to get the final. And I felt at that point that it was more likely than not that it would be us."

World Cup final the latest of notable events at MetLife

World Cup final the latest of notable events at MetLife

The 2026 World Cup final will join a long list of showpiece events that have been hosted at MetLife Stadium:

  • Super Bowl XLVIII in February 2014, won by the Seattle Seahawks over the Denver Broncos
  • International friendly in June 2012 in which Argentina beat Brazil 4-3 and Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick
  • Copa America Centenario final in June 2016 in which Chile defeated Argentina on penalties after a goalless draw, leading Messi to announce his retirement from the national team
  • Concerts headlined by acts including U2, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Jay-Z, One Direction, Ed Sheeran and BTS

The stadium will also host three matches during this summer's Copa America.

Validation of Atlanta's emergence as a soccer hotbed

The Athletic spoke to Atlanta City Council President Doug Shipman following the announcement that the city would host eight World Cup matches including a semifinal in 2026: "It's fantastic news. It's huge validation of everything that's happened in Atlanta. It's such a boost for the city.

"We wanted several matches. We obviously made no secret we wanted a semifinal match.

"It's going to also be a boost for what the whole soccer project is in Atlanta. I think it's just incredibly validating for all that energy and gives us a north star to point to.

"In January of 2017, we didn't have a professional soccer team that was playing in Atlanta, for men or women. We launch Atlanta United and in seven years time we have a world class stadium. We have a competitive MLS team. We have the headquarters and the training facility for the US National Team moving into the Atlanta metro area and we have not only eight World Cup matches, but we also have Copa America, we'll potentially have the Club World Cup and other tournaments that are coming.

"It's just a remarkable series of investments that now on the global stage are attracting the biggest and the best players and I think it's a validation for (Atlanta United owner) Arthur Blank's vision."

Prepare for ‘the round of 32’

Prepare for ‘the round of 32’

The 2026 World Cup fixture schedule is unique in that it also features a ‘round of 32’.

That’s because the expanded tournament will feature 12 four-team groups, with winners and runners-up in each of the 12 four-team groups joined by the eight best third-placed teams in the new knockout round.

FIFA had initially planned for the tournament to include 16 three-team groups. But they were forced to ditch these plans after acknowledging the “risk of collusion” in that format.

Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Monterrey, Houston, Dallas, Kansas City, Atlanta, Miami, Toronto, Boston and New Jersey will all host round of 32 fixtures.

Berhalter on FIFA's decision

Discussing FIFA's decision to choose New York/New Jersey over Dallas, Berhalter added: "The one piece of input was travel, trying to minimize travel. It gets tricky when you talk about four-five hour flights and time zone shifts between games... FIFA ultimately made the decision.

"It was informal conversations with FIFA at various levels of their organization and then a formal conversation with their technical department about our needs."

Berhalter also said the USMNT would be utilising the national training center that will open in Atlanta before 2026.

USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter said after the announcement: "To have the final in New York/New Jersey is a dream come true for me being from that area.

"Another area with a rich tradition in soccer and producing players.

"To think about being a little kid and going to that stadium to watch the Cosmos and now a World Cup final there is special."

Husky Roster Review: Hunter Already Feels Comfortable in Husky Stadium

Dan raley | may 18, 2024.

Jeremiah Hunter makes a spring practice catch.

Last season, Jeremiah Hunter ran into the east end zone Husky Stadium, looking over his inside shoulder with University of Washington cornerback Thaddeus Dixon draped all over him. Once the ball was in the air, the California wide receiver rotated his body in the other direction and made a sensational one-handed grab while falling backward.

Dixon could only sit there on the turf on that late September day, pondering what else he could have done to prevent the 7-yard touchdown pass to Hunter early in a game the Huskies won convincingly at 59-32.

These two still go at it in a furious manner, except now they're UW teammates and everything takes place in practice. Hunter has gone over to the dark side, one where he dresses in a deep purple jersey. After four seasons at Cal, he's come to Seattle to play in a pro-style offense and try to improve his NFL chances.

So far, so good. In 15 spring football practices, he showed himself to be a solidly built receiver at 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds who's not afraid to use his body to create separation and go up in traffic and get the football.

This is one in a series of articles -- going from 0 to 99 on the Husky roster -- examining what each scholarship player and leading walk-on did this past spring and what to expect from them going forward.

Jeremiah Hunter slips past UW cornerback Leroy Bryant.

Interestingly, Jedd Fisch's Husky coaching staff made Hunter run with the No. 2 offense for half of spring ball, left to learn their various techniques before he was elevated. It didn't matter that, with his 143 career receptions, he had twice as many as the next guy on the UW roster, in this case Giles Jackson.

Hunter comes from Fresno, California, which for him was a wide receiver mecca. At Central High School, he played alongside Xavier Worthy, a Texas pass-catcher who last month went to the Kansas City Chiefs with the 28th pick of the first round of the NFL Draft. He played against Jalen McMillan, who made the jump from Fresno's San Joaquin High to the UW to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last month as a third-round pick. Hunter wants to join them.

While McMillan and Worthy were preparing for their teams to face each other in the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day, Hunter committed to the UW from the transfer portal. However, things would get very complicated for him before the deal was done.

Hunter arrived in Montlake for an official visit only to learn that then-Husky coach Kalen DeBoer had accepted the Alabama job and the receiver was sent home. Jedd Fisch's staff was able to secure the pass-catcher's services in the end.

"It was either here or Arizona," Hunter said of his best portal options. "It just so happened that the Arizona coaching staff came up here and everything worked out, so I stayed."

And why not? After all, he already knew his way to the end zone and six points in Husky Stadium. It's time to make it a regular habit.

JEREMIAH HUNTER FILE

What he's done: Hunter is an experienced, veteran player who joined the UW after playing in 33 games at Cal and starting 23. Nothing should faze him as he plays a fifth college football season in Montlake.

Starter or not: After having to earn a first-unit role in the spring rather than have it handed to him, Hunter will take the field this fall with a starting UW receiving corps that consists of sophomore Denzel Boston, fellow senior Giles Jackson and him, all running routes for Mississippi State transfer quarterback Will Rogers. There's no reason to think they won't be good.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.
