Star Trek-Inspired Furniture and More for the Ultimate Sci-fi Home

Monika Thakur

Adding some creativity and personal style to your home decor is one thing but taking it to an intergalactic level is another. If you’re someone who appreciates sci-fi and wants to add it to the home decor, this is the right place to be.  Here we acquaint you with Star Trek-inspired furniture and other functional products that will add flair to your home or office.

These Star Trek-inspired home utility products seem to be straight out of a spaceship. From USS Enterprise coffee table to Star Trek dog bed, these items are likely to turn an ordinary living space into a galactic world.

USS Enterprise Coffee Table

Designed and constructed by woodworker Barry Shields, the USS Enterprise Coffee Table is a piece of stunning sci-fi furniture to give a geeky makeover to your living area. It is shaped exactly like the original spacecraft from the fictional series.

Its body is made of ash, black walnut, and poplar woods, instead of metal. The base is made entirely out of wood, whereas a glass top rests above the wooden base, allowing you to have a clear view of the spacecraft underneath.

Star Trek - Furniture, Home Decor, Interior Design & Gift Ideas

The crew inside the USS Enterprise are amazing men and women who are brave enough to go where no man has been before. And for that to be a worthwhile experience, the inside of the USS Enterprise is not only well designed. It is also comfortably decorated.

The look and feel of Star Trek: The Original Series perfectly depicts the age when it was first shown. Released in the 1960s, the favored décor style of the USS Enterprise is Mid-Century Modern. Therefore, it’s very retro but at the same time futuristic.

The Star Trek Extended Design Universe

By Emily Jensen

The Star Trek franchise has produced one of the most comprehensive universes ever seen in pop culture, with a dedicated fan base ready to swoop in on any inconsistencies. But there is one thing many Trekkies can agree upon: they would like to own and drink out of Captain Jean-Luc Picard’s tea cup (hot Earl Grey tea optional). And they can: His preferred drinking vessel, used not only throughout The Next Generation (1987-1994), but also by Captain Kathryn Janeway on Voyager (1995-2001) and of course the modern iteration of Picard (2020-present), is not a manufactured prop, but Carsten Jorgensen’s Bistro Cup designed for Bodum in 1974. Though out of production, the cup is available from second-hand sellers like Etsy, where it is often conveniently labeled the Picard cup .

The Bodum cup is far from the only mass-produced, commercially available piece of decor used in Star Trek ’s imagined version of the future. Many set designs of The Original Series (1966-1969) incorporated the most forward-looking mid-century modern pieces to convey the year 2266, like Vladimir Kagan’s Sculpta Chair designed for Chromcraft, or The Ribbon Chair by Pierre Paulin for Artifort. “Despite its popularity in a certain subset of people, mid-century modernism was not widely accepted [in the 1960s],” says Brian McGuire, co-author of Star Trek: Designing the Final Frontier: How Midcentury Modernism Shaped Our View of the Future , published this August. “Because it was not traditional, it was considered foreign looking, cold. And so for most people it looked alien.”

Star Trek altered the sci-fi genre and television forever with its racially inclusive, utopian view of the future. But it was also ahead of its time in creating a coherent visual language with set design. And since the show’s production designers relied on commercially available items, aesthetically-minded fans have another entry point to obsessively catalog and collect a piece of the Star Trek universe.

Captain Picard from Star Trek drinking tea out a clear plastic mug

“I, like a lot of other people, thought that a lot of the furniture pieces were created by set designers, or production designers, and I was surprised to find out that they weren't,” says Eno Farley, who in March 2020 launched his Star Trek + Design Instagram account and webpage , which identifies the designers and origins of the many chairs, lamps, glasses and more used on The Original Series and beyond. “[The Bodum cups are] usually people's first purchase when they think they want to get the teacup that Picard drinks out of.”

Farley began his descent into Star Trek as a child, watching TOS and TNG with his family. Only in high school and college did he begin to pick up on the design aspect of the franchise after more dedicated rewatches. Living through the early days of the coronavirus lockdown in New York made him consider more closely the items he had in his home. “I had a couple of objects that had been used in Star Trek already. But then I wanted to know about more of them. I've noticed that really popular designers, like Joe Columbo, Pierre Paulin, people already know about,” he says. “At this point it's become this rabbit hole, where I've got hundreds of files saved to my computer of different pieces I’ve identified from Star Trek .”

A gray fabric chair in a heart shape

Sourcing the names of pieces can require some detective work, but Farley emphasizes that his project is very much a community effort. Other online design catalogs include Quark’s Qantina , which documents Star Trek tableware and barware, and Ex Astris Scientia, home to a centralized list of all commercially available chairs seen in the franchise.

McGuire’s co-author Dan Chavkin took a similar approach. He began watching the series only when it became available for streaming on Hulu, and as a photographer of modernist architecture and design, he immediately picked up on the use of mid-century modern items, starting with a terracotta candle lantern from Los Angeles brand Architectural Pottery used in the episode “The Corbomite Maneuver.”

Fallout's Creators Discuss Their (Big) Plans For Season 2, and Break Down That Finale

“Since I'm familiar with the company and the products, it was pretty glaring when I saw it. It had been repurposed on the show as the command module of the ship,” Chavkin says. Because the show was filmed in Southern California, its designers had firsthand access to the burgeoning California Modernism of the time. “You can imagine that a lot of Star Trek episodes, due to their storyline, would have nothing to do with high-end design,” says McGuire, who grew up an avid fan of Star Trek . “But there was a core of about 13, 14 episodes [that did]. And so to me, the interesting thing was, why did they use mid-century modernism in those particular storylines and how do these items articulate the plot?”

A black leather chair with a steel base

Season one’s “A Taste of Armageddon” showcases a city that looks like it could have been conceived by Mies van der Rohe. The Bauhaus-influenced aesthetic is not merely stylish, but fits the story. “These people are in the middle of a 500-year computer war. And so you have this contrast of this computer-generated war and then this beautiful city that appears untouched. And the mystery was, how was his war conducted, why is there no damage, why is there no evidence of warfare? And it's because it was all computer driven,” McGuire says.

Production designers have continued to evolve the Star Trek aesthetic. “Each show was subject to the design trends that were popular at the time they were made,” Farley says. He cites TNG as the nexus of Star Trek ’s foray into postmodernism, with frequent use of softer, more luxurious pieces by designers like Pierre Paulin that reflect the USS Enterprise as a demilitarized living space. Enterprise (2001-2005), meanwhile, is set in an earlier century than prior series and offers a more austere style, with designer pieces reserved for alien encounters.

“And then Deep Space Nine is totally wacky. Which makes sense because it doesn't take place on a Federation ship, it takes place on what used to be a Cardassian space station,” he says. “So they had a lot of IKEA and really wacky postmodern pieces. They do use designer pieces but a lot of them are just, I think, probably the weirdest stuff they could find at a department store in the ’90s.”

Some pieces have been mainstays throughout; the Tulip Chairs that most casual fans might immediately identify as “the Star Trek chair” have been used all the way from TOS to Discovery . But the Maurice Burke-designed models used throughout the series are, well, knockoffs. “[Eero] Saarinen was the original innovator,” says McGuire. “And so Burke was more of a manufacturer than a designer, and they probably went with the cheaper version, because they were on such a tight budget.”

A white plastic chair in the shape of a tulip with a red cushion

The Captain’s Chair that ensconces James T. Kirk in TOS is more Frankenstein-ish: its base is a Danish Modern-style lounge chair designed by Arthur Umanoff, but production designers added a few consoles to take it from living room armchair to space age commander’s seat. Star Trek: Discovery (2017-present), set a decade before the events of TOS , uses the same style of chair for continuity, but today’s producers have the resources to build it from scratch, says Discovery art director Jody Clement. “We don't look at it as trying to improve upon [the style], because we have to appreciate each series for what was available in that time period,” she says. “We definitely like to take it and either update it or give it a new spin and make it our own.”

A tan chair with wood trim

“The architectural language they had in the ’60s had a lot of factors involved. It was a new series, it was taking a chance. It wasn't a big budget series,” she says. “They did the best that they could using found materials to put together a futuristic aesthetic. And of course, the time period with traveling to the moon and the introduction of industrial abilities, like forming plastic and things like that, that was something that they had access to that seemed very futuristic to them at the time.” Today’s production designers and art directors can use technologies like Vacuform machines to create a futuristic set, but they are constantly referencing older series for how they styled everything from crew quarters to command centers.

Discovery does source contemporary pieces sometimes, Clement says, like the Gakko Slide Chairs designed by Tayfur Ozkaynak for Soho Concept that are used throughout USS Discovery’s Mess Hall. But today’s fans will notice any small detail that looks “off” or ripped straight from a catalog and placed in the universe. “I believe there are 74 screens on the Discovery bridge, and every one of those screens has a different graphic on it, very specific to what the control panel would be doing,” Clement says. “So that if the camera happens to be looking at something and you pick up the graphic that's on the screen on the monitor or on the tablet, you're not going to see that same thing on the wall, it's going to be a different graphic.”

On the set of the TV series Star Trek

The bar for this level of detail was set by TOS ’ set designer and art director, Matt Jefferies. Chavkin and McGuirde say a breakthrough in their book research was the acquisition of Jeffries’ original sketches, which had been purchased by collector Gerald Gurian in a Paramount auction years prior. “Through those we were able to see the origin of the looks of each of these episodes,” McGuire says. “And then we could compare that with the frame that it corresponds to to see what the set decorators came up with. So it's very clear that the mid-century modern look came from Walter Matt Jeffries.”

That dedication to a vision gives Star Trek a timeless quality, believe Chavkin and McGuire, even while the show was undoubtedly influenced by the period and place in which it was produced. But today’s designers and art directors have been able to update that vision of the future for every new entry into the series. “Mid-century modernism is so popular now that it perhaps wouldn't work as an alien-looking set piece, because almost everyone has it. And so, paradoxically, I think these designs of the ’60s are much more used now than they were in the ’60s,” says McGuire. Including perhaps in the homes of many a devoted Trekkie.

Exclusive! The ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Enterprise blends midcentury design with SciFi futurism – Part 2

Feature By Paula Benson

Feature: 11 Aug 2022

How do you augment the  Star Trek Enterprise? It’s a seemingly impossible task given that the original exalted starship has often been sited as one of the best-designed and most influential science fiction spacecraft. Here in Part 2 of our in-depth investigation into the reimagining of the USS Enterprise design for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , we take an exclusive look around the Transporter, Spock’s Quarters and the Enterprise Sick Bay – with Production Designer Jonathan Lee as our guide.

Part 1 , which we highly recommend you delve into first here , investigates the Bridge of Star Trek: The Original Series (‘ TOS’ ) from the late 1960s and how it’s evolved for Strange New Worlds (‘ SNW ‘), together with Captain Pikes Ready Room and Pike’s Enterprise Quarters.

Prepare to Energise: The Transporter

The Transporter Room on Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

If like me, you’ve spent the last few decades hoping that a Star Trek- style teleportation machine would become a real, live experience, you’ll be disappointed. Although not a totally ridiculous idea, as quantum teleportation has already been achieved, for now you’ll have to make do with the shiny new Transporter Room onboard the new-look Enterprise of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds .

First introduced in TOS , the Transporter allows for teleportation by converting a person or object into an energy pattern (a process called ‘dematerialisation’), then sending (‘beaming’) it to a target location or returning it to the transporter, where it is reconverted into matter (‘rematerialisation’). Since this amazing concept first hit our screens in 1966, the name and similar concepts have made their way to other science fiction films, TV and literature.

SNW Production Designer Jonathan Lee acknowledges that the Transporter was already an iconic set but he wanted to update it, have some fun with it and ensure the cameras could move around it more easily for filming. Lee added a corridor around the back of this part of the ship “so we could look through the consoles to the operators, but still very recognisable”.

Spock’s Quarters

Spock (played by Ethan Peck ) has impressive Quarters on board the starship Enterprise.

Spock's Quarters in Strange New Worlds.

This is a fine example, as is Pike’s Quarters , of how midcentury decor details ground us in the TOS aesthetic and contemporary pieces bring us into the now and beyond.

We spotted some of our old and trusted friends; the STOFF Nagel candle holders which appear in both chrome and brass – a design classic from the 1960s and we are very pleased to own some vintage originals at F&F HQ. You can build your own grouped combination used several of these wondrous objects, as Spock did in his quarters in Star Trek: Strange New World s.

The STOFF Nagel candle holders are design classic with a decidedly midcentury modern aesthetic and we’re very pleased to have a set of vintage originals at F&F HQ.

These candle holders and the tall STOFF Nagel stand are still made today and are available from our store. Vintage original versions can often be found on Etsy

Spock's London Console Table

The shape of Spock’s console table in brass and black (seen above lower right) seems to naturally echo the Starfleet insignia as well as the Vulcan salute.

Spock's Quarters in Star Trek Strange New Worlds.

Behind Spock’s custom designed desk, we see a Graph Conference Chair in black leather. These chairs are seen throughout the ship such as in Pike’s Ready Room in red and in the Sick Bay.

The Graph Conference chair by Wilkhahn is designed by Markus Jehs and Jürgen Laub, and the name refers to its graphical aesthetic.

The Enterprise Sick Bay

The Sick Bay is the jurisdiction of Dr. M’Benga (played by Babs Olusanmokun ) and Nurse Christine Chapel ( Jess Bush )

The Graph Conference chair is perfect for furnishing the Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . Made by Wilkhahn, and designed by Markus Jehs and Jürgen Laub, the name refers to its graphical aesthetic.

On this desk we find an AJ Table Lamp , designed by Danish architect and industrial designer Arne Jacobsen . You may recognise these from Pike’s Ready Room as they also appear on his desk, but here in the Sick Bay a white version has been opted for.

A light very similar, if not the very same as the Louis Poulsen AJ Table Lamp designed by Arne Jacobsen, makes an appearance in the Bond, No Time To Die .

The Sick Bay also features another piece of furniture which caught our eye: The Miura bar stools in white by Plank.

Designer: konstantin grcic.

The Miura bar stool features a faceted seat that has a pleasing visual connection to the raked vertical supports. This stool oozes Sci Fi and hence it looks right at home in the starship Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds .

High white is the order of the day for such a clinical space, and white too is a theme we also find in the corridors. These spaces ooze all the very best of science fiction film sets (which Kubrick set the bar for with 2001: A Space Odyssey ).

A corridor of Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The Mess Hall film set and the Port Galley (which we will see in Season 2) also continues this white theme with the classic Saarinen Tulip Chairs and Saarinen Tulip tables which feature in abundance.

Corridor, sickbay, captain quarters, and ready room sets look like the interior of a furniture department store. Too much room. Over impressive sweeping designs for Pike’s quarters. Bridge seems like a computer game arcade. Everything looks too polished and clean.

Spock’s SNW’s quarters feel too cluttered to me. Vulcan’s always exude this ‘zen’ kind of vibe and there’s way too much going on in Spock’s quarters. Too many tables and too much stuff cluttering it up. It ‘feels’ less Vulcan-like and way too busy. Pike’s quarters are so much simpler. I would have kept the red and black color scheme of his quarters in TOS and pared down the extraneous stuff. The dramatic colors paired with a simply furnished room would have felt more ‘Vulcan’ and more Spock to me.

CelebWatch: Shatner Gets “Weird” + Pine Goes To “Moscow” + Nimoy Wraps “Fringe” + Quinto On The “Margin”

| April 12, 2010 | By: Anthony Pascale 19 comments so far

Shatner pitches "Weird or What" in Cannes

We will find in May if William Shatner’s new sitcom Bleep My Dad Says gets picked up, but one Shatner show that is definitely going on the air is Weird or What , a new documentary series Shatner is co-producing an hosting. The show description press release make it sound a bit like Leonard Nimoy’s In Search Of :

in Weird or What? William Shatner will investigate and analyze all that is weird in the world, including everything from paranormal phenomena to weird and wonderful creatures, from medical oddities to mysterious disappearances, and bizarre natural disasters to mystical monster attacks.

The show has been sold to Discovery Channel in the US and History Channel in Canada. Today Shatner is at the MIP TV convention in Cannes today selling  the show to the world. Variety reports that production company Cineflix has successfully sold the show to "nearly every territory". At the event Shatner described the show:

We’re looking at weird circumstances but we’re presenting them in a light-hearted, jaunty way. We’re not taking ourselves too seriously.

Chris Pine headed to Moscow as Jack Ryan

Last year Chris Pine, the new Kirk, was tapped as the new Jack Ryan, to head up another big Paramount franchise. New details have emerged on this next film based on the Tom Clancy character. Pajiba reports the following story synopsis for the next Jack Ryan film (now with the working title of "Moscow"):

The movie will pick up with the Jack Ryan not long after his stint in the Marines, before he’s joined the CIA, while he’s a Wall Street stock broker, an occupation that will play heavily into the script. In the Clancy novels, Jack Ryan was a successful financial analyst in Baltimore for Merrill Lynch. In the new movie, he will have transplanted to Moscow to continue his financial advising, not for Merill Lynch (which has been absorbed by Bank of America), but for a billionaire employer. It is that billionaire employer who eventually sets Jack Ryan up to take the fall for terrorist plot designed to collapse the U.S. economy. After that, Ryan must race against time to clear his name, reveal the terrorist plot, and save his wife, who has been taken hostage by the billionaire employer.

No word yet on when "Moscow" will go in front of cameras or be released, but probably following Pine’s work on the next Star Trek .

Nimoy’s last day as an actor? + honored as space inspiration

Spock Prime, Leonard Nimoy has recently stated he is ready to back into acting retirement. This would mean his last job as an actor would be reprising his role as William Bell in the season finale  JJ Abrams’ Fringe . And yesterday, Nimoy tweeted " Finishing work on Fringe today. Really good experience. The two parter will air in May." Today he tweeted that his back home. Speaking of Twitter, in just four days TheRealNimoy has picked up almost 33,000 followers.

But Mr. Nimoy is still out and about. On Thursday Leonard is being honored by the Space Foundation at the National Space Symposium in Colorado. Nimoy is being presented with the Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach award for being an inspiration to people around the world "to explore the wonders of science, space, and technology." And a reminder, next Friday the original Spock is headed to the Vulcan, Alberta, Canada (the official Star Trek capital of Canada) to unveil a bust of himself, and then he is off to the Calgary Entertainment Expo for the weekend.

Quinto on NYSE floor

Finally we come to the new Mr. Spock, Zachary Quinto. The actor is currently in New York  filling out his resume as a producer an actor in Margin Call , a film set in the world of the stock market. Last week Zach tweeted this pic of himself with his Before the Door production company partners.

While he has been in New York, Quinto has been a frequent Twitterer, sending gems like this one last Thursday:

the t-shirt i was wearing today smelled. so i bought a new t-shirt. now it smells. already. why you got to be so smelly t-shirts?

But no worries, Zach was cleaned up all nice by the next night…

Jeez, that photo of Nimoy is fierce! :D

I cant wait to see nimoy and the shat at vegas will miss them when their gone

Shats new show sounds fun–long as they dont make fun of believers cuz that could be bad n sad–

Like a jaunty “In Search Of…”

If I see one more word with quotes around it I’m going to “scream”.

Has Shatner seen Star Trek 11 yet?

How really cares. I don’t. maybe I did at one point. But I don’t now. Let it go. For crying….out….loud

“We’re not taking ourselves too seriously.”

In contrast to some of today’s Hollywood actor wannabees, Shatner can afford to not take himself too seriously. :)

Nimoy looks like an old, and very wise Spock on that photo. Acting retirement surely would be a waste of material…

#6 No, he’s busy having a life. :))

The two shows should be combined to form a show called “Weird Fringe”, and in the first show William Shatner could focus on mysteries of Mr.Spock’s bowl haircut.

Wow whats up with Quinto’s nerdball galsses….First we see a hobo Spock and now dork Spock.

ZQ’s follow up tweet is hilarious!

Nimoy always look cool…kinda badass…you wish Fringe would throw a evil Spock beard on him! Shat looks kinda pudgy…a jolly old type… I was really hoping Mr Nimoy would make it in the new MI movie as Paris…maybe a evil Paris with a beard!

Jack Ryan before Star Trek or after???

From everything I’ve seen of Ben Affleck, he’s pretty impressed with himself. Chris Pine will be 1000 times better than him.

Quinto needs a fashion adviser.

I think Quinto should do a music video as Bilbo Baggins

Alec Baldwin was a great Jack Ryan. Tough act to follow (and I’m a big Ford fan).

16. Yeah! xD lol

Quinto is always dressed stylish, cool and modern- I love it. Zach, just rub some patchouly on yourself and get back to work please!!!!!!!! And Bleep Jack Ryan!

Moskva-Class Cruisers

Separate design teams often attempt to meet a set of ship specifications with completely different, although equally valid, strategies. To fulfill the requirements issued in April 2169 for the successor (NX-223) to the Daedalus class, which was introduced at the end of the Romulan War, Prosser & Ankopitch proposed a ship with an extremely large, spherical command hull attached to a nearly vestigial engineering hull. The proposal from the Mikoyan-Tupolev-Dassault Bureau used a long narrow command hull with a minimal frontal silhouette counterbalanced by an equally long engineering hull.

The engineers at Tezuka-Republic decided that the division of ship's functions between a command/crew hull and an engineering hull was arbitrary and unnecessarily restricted design options. Therefore, rather than gathering all the specified facilities in a single hull, their design TR-223A spread them across two hulls, as in Daedalus , and segregated the SSWR-IV-C warp core to a "bustle" at the extreme aft end of the secondary hull. This bustle could be separated easily and quickly from the rest of the engineering hull in the event of a warp core breach. The now-unpowered warp nacelles would then be shed. In this way, the demands of safety would be met without warp dynamics being degraded either by an excessively large frontal silhouette or by longitudinal warp field imbalance.

Although the Ship Specifications Review Board praised Tezuka-Republic for its creative solution to the problem of admittedly contradictory requirements for extreme safety and improved warp performance, they were forced to disqualify design TR-223A for not precisely meeting contract specifications. Therefore, in October 2171, construction contract NX-223 for Starfleet's new cruiser was awarded to Prosser & Ankopitch for what would become the Wasp class .

However, almost no one was happy with the new Wasp ships. Even before the contract was awarded, voices within Starfleet and within industry had strongly criticized the specifications of April 2169. These critics charged that they would lead to a mediocre, albeit safe, fighting ship. Two separate classes were needed, not a single class that was neither a proper explorer nor a proper warship. When Wasp was finally launched in 2173, her performance during precommisioning trials clearly showed that the critics had been correct. Although the performance problems were related in part to the continuing unavailability of the more powerful Tezuka-Republic Hiryu ("Flying Dragon") mark III warp nacelles, Wasp was obviously not the ship Starfleet had hoped for.

In a second attempt to obtain a reliable and capable warship, new specifications (NX-374) were issued in September 2175, little more than a year after USS  Wasp had entered service. Adding to this sense of urgency were intelligence reports suggesting that the Romulans had either developed or otherwise acquired matter/antimatter (M/AM) reactors. This time the specifications put less emphasis upon safety. The original requirement for completely separate command and engineering hulls was eliminated; instead, any hull configuration was allowed as long as the warp core could be quickly separated from the rest of the ship. Furthermore, requirements for speed, acceleration, and maneuverability both under impulse power and under warp power were increased, as were performance levels for target acquisition, tracking, and servicing.

These new specifications were a clear, albeit belated, admission that the critics had been correct all along: one class could not be expected to serve as both an explorer and a main battleship. In fact, starship technology was not considered sufficiently mature for a single ship to adequately fulfill both mission profiles until 2245, when the Constitution -class heavy cruiser was launched. (The controversy continues even today in the wake of the problems of the Galaxy -class explorer.)

Luckily, the designers and engineers at Tezuka-Republic had not been idle since their disappointing loss of the Wasp contract in 2171. Instead, they had spent their time refining design TR-223A so that their new entry (TR-374A) was markedly superior to what had been submitted 5 years earlier. In particular, the new SSWR-V warp reactor allowed the bustle to be made smaller, lighter, and even more easily separable. Therefore, it was hardly surprising when in November 2176 Tezuka-Republic was awarded the production contract over designs from Shimata-Dominquez, Prosser & Ankopitch, Mikoyan-Tupolev Dassault, Monarch R&U, and Thornycroft/Ebisu for what was to become the Moskva class.

However, engineering prowess may not have been the only factor in Tezuka-Republic's winning of the contract. There were accusations that the delay in delivery of the Hiryu warp engines was an attempt by Tezuka-Republic to prevent Wasp from reaching her designed performance levels. While no conclusive incriminating evidence has come to light, the delivery of the long-awaited engines shortly before the scheduled launch of Moskva in December 2177 is certainly suspicious. Tezuka-Republic maintains that if their submission of 2169 had been selected, its performance would also have not have met design specifications without the Hiryu engines. However, critics charge that TR-223A was not as reliant as Wasp on the type of engine used. Furthermore, once the Wasp contract was awarded, and even after Wasp was launched, Tezuka-Republic certainly made no efforts to accelerate delivery of Hiryu.

These controversies were soon rendered moot as the new Moskva class was recognized as a significant advance in starship design. The most important new feature was Moskva's discoid primary hull. Earlier designs had chosen a spherical primary hull for reasons of economy. Simple geometric relationships dictate that a spherical hull has the smallest surface area for a given volume. Therefore, construction costs are lower and shields are more efficient. Furthermore, institutional inertia had led nearly all exploratory cruisers originating until that time from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the United States Astronautics Agency, the United Earth Space Probe Agency, and its successor organizations to have spherical hulls.

star trek style furniture

The designers of USS  Moskva employed a biconvex disc for several reasons. Their initial motive was to increase hull volume while minimizing both frontal and lateral silhouettes. A warship with large frontal and lateral silhouettes would be at a greater disadvantage in most tactical situations than would be a ship with an increased superior silhouette. However, the discoid hull allowed the traditional radial layout of command hulls to be retained.

More important than these tactical advantages were functional advantages. As was shown with the Wasp class, warp field geometry would have been awkward if a spherical hull with its relatively large frontal area had been used. The discoid hull was also found to channel warp field flow across its upper surface towards the bussard ram scoops of the warp nacelles. This channeling effect improved field efficiency at all power levels and speeds. As the understanding of warp field mechanics was refined, the trend towards saucer-shaped primary hulls would be intensified in later Starfleet vessels.

star trek style furniture

In most respects, the Moskva class continued design and engineering trends established in the Comet and Daedalus classes introduced at the end of the Romulan War. As in these classes, ship functions were clearly divided between a command/crew hull and an engineering/propulsion hull. The bridge was returned to its customary position atop the command hull and the shuttlecraft bay was again placed in the secondary hull. The fusion reactor was centered along the longitudinal axis of the ship, and impulse thrust ports exited immediately in front of the warp bustle detachment seam.

Weaponry was the then-standard mix of fusion-warhead missiles and lasers. New to this class was an early type of ultraphased pulse laser cannon, two of which were mounted in the chin of the primary hull. Although the on-target energy output of this new weapon approached that of early phasers, its power requirement was higher and its range was substantially less. However, subsequent refinements lead to steady improvement and, ultimately, to the development of true phasers in 2202. Although Moskva -class ships were the first to be fitted with phasers in 2204, lasers were still carried by the Moskva class and later classes until the 2220s. Finally, warp capability was supplied by the long-awaited Hiryu mark III drive units.

The first ship of the new class, USS  Moskva (NCC-374), entered service with Starfleet in April 2179. An additional 30 ships (NCC-375 to NCC-404) joined the fleet through 2183. Moskva -class ships gained immediate popularity with officers and crews. First, total laser firepower was increased some 75% over that in the preceding Wasp class. Second, because the ship's mass was more equally distributed along the longitudinal axis than in the Wasp class, Moskva was significantly more maneuverable at both sublight and warp speeds. Finally, the more warp-dynamic design allowed greater cruising and maximum speeds.

The Moskva class had an outstanding safety record. No ships were lost because of mechanical failures. However, an incident occurred aboard USS  Johannesburg in 2186 when a faulty nacelle flow monitor falsely indicated a runaway positive feedback power loop within the plasma flow governor. Believing that a catastrophic warp core explosion was imminent, Chief Engineer Roberta Bocharnikov ordered the warp nacelles and warp bustle to be separated. Although unnecessary, these maneuvers were successful in causing the separated warp core to initiate its automatic shut-down routine. The warp core, nacelles, and the rest of the ship were towed to Starbase 13, where they were successfully re-mated. Despite her supreme embarrassment, Bocharnikov oversaw the reassembly and relaunching of Johannesburg and retained her position as chief engineer.

Although most ships of the Moskva class had left front-line service by 2215, some continued to serve as auxiliaries and training vessels until the 2240s. After retirement from active duty, Moskva -class ships were used as testbeds for many emerging technologies owing to the similarities of their layouts to those of succeeding classes. USS  Moskva was the site of the first successful ship-to-surface transport of a Human being in 2206, and USS  Gato was the first ship to fire photon torpedoes in 2214. In addition, Taurus -class tugs, which entered service in 2182, and Sanford -class repair tenders, which entered service in 2185, were derived from the Moskva class and used the same primary hull and warp drive assembly.

The Moskva -class cruiser USS  Aurora (NCC-377), a participant of the Battle of Eohippus IV, is on display at the Starfleet Museum.
