Tom Cruise has been around the Hollywood block. But there was one thing that the Mummy star had never seen before: a series of viral memes of the action hero clinging to a things. During a video interview for BBC Radio 1 , Cruise and reporter Ali Plumb reflected on some of his most iconic film moments, before jumping into the important stuff: his viral fame.

“Are you aware of the #TomCruiseClinging off things meme?” Plumb asked. When Cruise admitted he was not, the reporter busted out some of his favorite shots on his phone. There was Tom Cruise clinging to Free Willy in midair; there were a number of Tom Cruises arranged artfully around the fluffy face of a cat; there was Tom Cruise hanging on to the edge of an elevator shaft while Darth Maul plummets to his doom; there was a tiny Tom Cruise chilling off the side of Nicolas Cage ‘s larger-than-life face. During this display of Photoshopped meme images, Cruise simply could not contain himself.

“That’s fantastic,” he exclaimed. “Oh my god, why didn’t anyone show me that before? That is hilarious!” In fact, Cruise ended up in such knee-slapping hysterics that he had to ask for a glass of water to regain his composure.

The #TomCruiseClinging meme has actually been around since 2015, according to Know Your Meme , when Photoshop wizards began working their magic on a still of Cruise hanging in midair from the trailer of Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation . In the stunt — which Cruise performed himself, with no green screen — he is clinging to a jet as it takes off, making it one of the most dangerous things he’s ever done, by his own admission.

Luckily, his willingness to push his own limits has resulted in internet infamy. Thanks, memes, for keeping a legendary scene alive — and thanks for giving Tom Cruise a good laugh.

The Wilford Brimley Meme That Helps Measure Tom Cruise’s Agelessness

Tom Cruise was about to turn thirty-one when “The Firm,” the film adaptation of John Grisham’s best-selling novel , hit theatres. In the movie, Cruise plays a hotshot boy wonder just out of Harvard Law, who takes a job as an associate attorney at a law firm that turns out to be washing money for the Mob. In a pivotal scene, he has a meeting with the firm’s fixer, played by Wilford Brimley, during which he is blackmailed with a series of incriminating photographs showing his character having an affair. The meaning of the scene is made clear by the disparities between the two men: Cruise, a young man, being let in on the slimy truths of the real world by Brimley, an old man. Later in the movie, Cruise beats Brimley up with a leather briefcase .

When “The Firm” came out, Brimley was fifty-eight years old—plodding, portly, with a gray walrus mustache, his grandfatherly mien in this case turned sinister. He was just two years older than Cruise is now, appearing boundlessly vigorous as the super-agent Ethan Hunt in the latest “Mission: Impossible” movie . Cruise has been very, very famous for the past thirty-five years, and in that time it’s been difficult to reconcile his unchanging appearance with the flipping pages on the calendar. It’s easier to track his movements through the six “Mission: Impossible” movies by his haircuts—short in No. 1, long in No. 2, short again in No. 3, etc.—or the size of his cell phone, than by changes to, let alone diminishments in, his face or body. He fixed his teeth years ago; he’s in better shape than ever. And so we are left to search for other ways to keep track of Cruise’s allegedly advancing years. Thankfully, the release of his latest summer blockbuster has resurfaced one of the surest methods: comparing him to his old scenemate Wilford Brimley.

This meme seems to have had its beginnings in 2011, when Cruise turned forty-nine, the same age that Brimley was when he began filming his role in Ron Howard’s movie “ Cocoon ,” from 1985, a kind of “E.T.” for the olds about a group of seniors living in a retirement community who are given the chance to live forever by leaving Earth on an alien spaceship. In the years since Cruise blasted through what I’ll call the Brimley Barrier, people online have continued to make the comparison between the two men, citing the fact that Cruise was a year, or two, or three years older than Brimley when he starred in “Cocoon.” Last month, a new tweet on the subject drew the attention of Brimley himself, who retweeted it and said, “This is still hard for me to believe.” Brimley, who is eighty-three, has settled into a late-life role as a meme machine , known among a younger generation less for his years of acting than for his role as the Quaker Oats pitchman, or for his pronunciation of the word “ diabetes ” as the television spokesman for Liberty Medical.

It’s hard to imagine Cruise ever talking about Medicare eligibility. On his way to sixty, he is literally still kicking (and punching and jumping and hanging and remembering his long-ago co-stars’ birthdays ), and doing so in a way that seems to go beyond the commonplace celebrity cosmetic trickery of the moment. He seems, in ways both inspiring and unsettling , to have figured something out. The comparison of Brimley and Cruise in middle age doesn’t just make light of the former’s premature fogeydom and the latter’s eternal youthfulness; it also highlights how the mores, signifiers, and very science of aging have changed—that sixty is the new fifty, which is the new forty, and so on. That Cruise is the new Brimley.

But in “ Mission: Impossible—Fallout ” there are a few fleeting signs that Cruise may be somewhat aware of the concept of aging. Even with the help of Henry Cavill, who, at thirty-five, is a year older than Cruise was in the first “Mission: Impossible” movie, Ethan Hunt cannot subdue a foe in an elaborate bathroom brawl. Later, Hunt pauses, a bit daunted and out of breath, before tossing an office chair through a window and then jumping out of it. And Hunt is succumbing to at least one unfortunate aging-man foible. As he grows older, his love interests are getting younger. Hunt’s ex-wife is played by Michelle Monaghan, who is forty-two; his new partner in love and mayhem is played by Rebecca Ferguson, who is thirty-four; and a likely contender for his affections going forward is played by Vanessa Kirby, who is just thirty.

Yet one needs merely to watch the latest movie’s stunning dénouement—a helicopter chase in Kashmir—to be reassured of Hunt’s still sure chokehold on father time, and to be reminded of the uncanny distances that Cruise is travelling beyond Brimley. In “Cocoon,” despite being reinvigorated by extraterrestrial intervention, the only athletic feat Brimley could manage was a boisterous cannonball off a diving board. Later in the movie, weighing the opportunity to leave with the aliens, Brimley’s character explains to his grandson, “We’ll never be sick. We won’t get any older. And we won’t ever die.” He decides, in the end, to go. Cruise, meanwhile, seems to have achieved the first two parts of that trifecta right here on Earth. And as for the last one, who’d be willing to bet against him?

Last week, IMAX accidentally uploaded a version of a trailer for Universal’s upcoming reboot of The Mummy that was void of sound effects. Now, the sound of Tom Cruise’s unedited scream is making the rounds, replacing the iconic “Wilhelm Scream” that has been used in more than 225 movies.

People on Tumblr, Twitter and Reddit have begun to apply Cruise’s scream, which can be heard in the video above around the one minute mark, into other films, like Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, Spaceballs and Team America . One video editor, who goes by johnnynapalm2001 on YouTube, put together a minute-long compilation video showcasing how Cruise’s scream would sound when added to each movie.

The meme has a new name, too: The Tom Cruise Wilhelm Scream. It’s no secret that most studios reuse audio clips for certain parts of movies and TV shows as a way to keep budget down and make the actor’s job a little easier. In 1951, a series of sound effects were recorded for a film called Distant Drums . There’s one particular scene where a group of soldiers are walking through a swamp, and as they’re patrolling, an alligator grabs one them and drags him underwater. The scream that he elicits as this is happening is known as the Wilhelm Scream and has since been used in more than 225 movies.

It wasn’t until sound designer Ben Burtt used the effect in George Lucas’ first Star Wars movie in 1977 that the sound effect really took off in pop culture. It can be heard when Luke Skywalker shoots a Stormtrooper standing on a ledge. The scream he lets out as he falls is the Wilhelm Scream, and Burtt would go on to use it in more major blockbuster films that he worked on for Steven Spielberg and Lucas. In fact, there’s a scene in Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom from 1984 that features a man being eaten by a crocodile and the Wilhelm Scream is the effect that’s used. It has long been seen as a joke referencing an ongoing joke that became much more popular as film was closely studied.

The full length trailer has also become a meme, with some editors adding new audio tracks to give it an entirely new feel. One of the better examples can be seen below.

Was Tom Cruise Actually Blacklisted by Bugatti for Being Awkward?

T om Cruise is a bit of an anomaly in Hollywood. The leading man has proven his acting chops with a range of difficult roles. He has stayed in the spotlight by completing increasingly death-defying stunts by himself over the years. But at the same time, he has proven painfully awkward in interviews, with one meme-inspiring moment after another. There's even a rumor that he was blacklisted by Bugatti for being so awkward. And it just might be true.

2006 was a big year for Cruise. He married Katie Holmes in a Scientologist ceremony (and professed his love for her in the infamous "couch jumping" interview). His Mission Impossible franchise was hitting its stride with the critically acclaimed M:I-3. And he had just taken delivery of one of the very first cars by the resurrected Bugatti brand: a Veyron. All three of these things came together in an epically awkward moment, that might have have gotten Cruise banned by Bugatti.

Instead of just renting a limo, the star drove his Veyron to the M:I-3 release red carpet. He parked at a jaunty angle in front of the photographers, got out, flashed his signature smile, then swaggered around the car to open Holmes' door. He grabbed the chrome handle and yanked…and nothing happened. While continuing to smile, Cruise spent the next 40 seconds trying different ways to open the supercar's door.

I have no clue exactly what happened here. But it appears that Cruise said something to Holmes, then waited for at least ten seconds for her to find the interior lock. Finally, he opened the door and offered her a hand out of the car.

While video of the awkward moment went viral, most felt that "things happen." It was a new supercar and the couple was still getting used to its quirks. But rumor has it Bugatti took offense. The story goes that the brand, which hadn't made a car in decades, worried viewers would assume its build quality was at fault. It's solution? Ban Cruise from ever buying a Bugatti again.

Yahoo Autos, Slash Gear, Lad Bible, The Things, and dozens of other online outlets reported the story as fact. Auto Evolution covered it, but specified that the ban is just a rumor. Everyone cited Marca, a Spanish-language sports newspaper. And Marca doesn't reveal its secret sources. Here is Marca's take:

"The reason for Bugatti's decision dates back to 2006, at a massive event where Mission Impossible 3 was premiering and Cruise arrived with a spectacular entrance…After several attempts, Cruise finally managed to open the door of the Bugatti Veyron, before the eyes of thousands of people present, including international press, as well as the millions of viewers who took the moment with humor, although that was not how the car brand saw it." Did Bugatti ever make a statement that Tom Cruise was banned from buying its cars? Absolutely not. But that doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Here's the scoop: Almost all automaker bans on specific celebrities are just rumors. Few automakers are willing to announce that someone or another can never buy their cars again. There's no PR upside to such an announcement. In addition, there are many levels of bans. Ferrari, which is famous for its blacklist, definitely has some internal lists of celebrities and collectors who are on its bad side. If these folks contact the OEM for a custom special edition, they'll be waiting for a call back indefinitely. But they may be able to walk into a dealership and buy one on display. There are others who the OEM has warned dealerships about, though these folks could pick a used Ferrari up at auction.

The most recent lists of Tom Cruise's car collection don't list any more Bugattis. But perhaps that's just because he doesn't like the cars. One possibility is that the budding brand was considering Cruise as some kind of ambassador, even if that just meant giving him discounted cars, but decided not to after the locked door incident. Marca could have gotten wind of these conversations and called it a "ban." But we'll probably never know for sure.

Para cast Top Gun: Maverick dikenal sangat dekat dan layaknya sebuah keluarga. Mereka juga menganggap sosok Tom Cruise sebagai panutan karena dedikasi dan etos kerja yang membuat semuanya terpukau.

Tapi untuk urusan group chat ada hal yang berbeda dari seluruh cast. Ternyata mereka tak mau mengajak Tom Cruise bergabung di sana. Jadi ini grup chat YTTA ya? Yang tahu tahu aja? Hihihi...

Hal ini diungkapkan oleh Lewis Pullman dalam wawancara bersama Vanity Fair. Ia mengatakan para pemain tetap berkomunikasi meski produksi sudah selesai dan bikin sebuah group chat, namun tidak Tom Cruise nggak diajak masuk grup ini.

Alasannya karena di dalam grup itu, banyak sekali pemain yang doyan ngirim meme dan jokes seperti grup chat pada umumnya. Mereka merasa Tom Cruise terlalu sibuk dan punya banyak urusan penting dibandingkan sekadar 'adu' meme di sana.

Meski begitu Tom Cruise menjanjikan ia akan selalu ada untuk para rekan-rekannya itu saat mereka membutuhkan.

"Kami masih (komunikasi). Tapi tidak (ada) Tom. Kami tak ingin mengganggunya dengan semua meme kami. Ia punya banyak hal yang lebih penting. Tapi ia akan siap membantu jika kami butuh bantuan," paparnya.

Belum lama kabar pertemanan Tom Cruise dengan seorang interpreter asal Jepang bersama Natsuko Toda jadi sorotan.

Ia pertama kali menjadi translator dari Tom Cruise pada 1992 di mana kala itu mereka melakukan promosi film Far and Away yang dibintanginya bersama Nicole Kidman. Kini sudah 24 kali sudah Tom Cruise berkunjung ke Jepang untuk melakukan promosi filmnya dan selalu ditemani oleh Natsuko Toda.

Hanya pada saat Tom Cruise melakukan promo Top Gun: Maverick di tahun lalu saja Natsuko absen karena kondisi kesehatannya. Ia kini telah berusia 86 tahun dan memutuskan untuk pensiun.

Dalam wawancaranya bersama The Change, Natsuka mengaku sudah lama kepikiran untuk pensiun sebagai penerjemah tapi kesempatan untuk bertemu dengan banyak orang membuatnya tetap bertahan di pekerjaannya.

"Aku bukanlah orang yang bilingual dan terjemahanku bukanlah pada level profesional. Aku memulai (karier di industri hiburan) sebagai penerjemah film dan mendapatkan kesempatan untuk menjadi interpreter hingga saat ini. Bagaimana pun takdir ini telah membuatku bertemu banyak orang, mendengar banyak cerita dan itu lah kenapa aku masih melanjutkannya," ungkapnya.

"Untukku, Tom Cruise adalah sosok yang spesial. Tak peduli apa yang dia lakukan, aku akan memberikan 200 persen kemampuanku. Ia adalah perfeksionis, terlepas dari apapun film yang dimainkannya atau pun iklan, atau hanya kegiatan konferensi pers. Ia selalu memberikan yang terbaik. Sebagai interpreter, aku juga harus memberikan 200 persen usahaku, agar semuanya berjalan mulus," tambahnya.

Natsuko pun mengaku sudah memberitahukan Tom Cruise jika ia akan pensiun dan tak bisa lagi menemaninya sebagai interpreter selama promo di Jepang.

"Aku sudah bilang ke dia, aku pensiun sebulan sebelum ia berkunjung ke Jepang, dan dengan bercanda ia menjawab, 'Apakah kau benar-benar tak mau melakukannya lagi? Kau masih mau jadi interpreter ku kan?' Ya bagaimana pun, dia tahu jika aku sudah memutuskannya," pungkasnya.

Inside Tom Cruise’s Shocking Transformation: ‘His Face Is Collapsing and Sagging’

Tom Cruise has been looking noticeably different lately — and sources say he’s desperate for more nip/tucks to shore up his falling face.

“Tom’s had all these surgeries and other beauty rituals that have taken a toll on his looks to the point where his face is collapsing and sagging in weird places,” an insider exclusively tells In Touch .

“People are begging him to stop trying to look younger and telling him to accept it and age gracefully. But that’s not his style!”

The 61-year-old screen superspy’s deflated face was on full display in London during a recent shoot for Mission: Impossible 8 .

“A couple of years ago, he was so puffy that people were comparing him to a chipmunk,” a source says. “But now it’s the opposite — all the extra volume is gone, so his skin is drooping and unfortunately it doesn’t just look like normal aging, it looks really unnatural!”

Sources previously claimed the Top Gun star had undergone multiple procedures — including a 2019 facelift — to preserve his boyish good looks.

“Tom may never admit it, but the truth is written all over his face,” a source adds.

“He’s convinced that with the right procedure he can turn back the clock again. He’s researching the latest rejuvenation techniques and putting a lot of hope on things like stem cells and lasers."

“But the fear is he could wind up permanently scarred. He always seems to go overboard and ends up looking pillow-faced — he doesn’t look like himself anymore!”

Pour incarner l’un des psychopathes les plus célèbres du cinéma, son Patrick Bateman culte, Christian Bale s’est inspiré de Tom Cruise ! Et si les similitudes vous échappent pour le moment, voilà quelques arguments qui pourraient vous convaincre...

Adaptation du roman de Bret Easton Ellis de 1991, American Psycho (2000) de Mary Harron est un classique intemporel considéré parmi les meilleurs films de tous les temps. Mettant en scène Christian Bale – qui se transforme physiquement pour la première fois, le début d’une longue liste – le thriller se déroule au beau milieu des années Reagan et suit le parcours psychotique de Patrick Bateman, un golden boy misogyne, homophobe et raciste de Wall Street qui cache, derrière son apparence superficielle et luxueuse, une personnalité de psychopathe qui le pousse à commettre une série d’actes meurtriers inhumains.

À sa sortie en l’an 2000, le film d’horreur psychologique avait connu un succès commercial phénoménal. Mêlant horreur et comédie noire, le film est surtout une comédie satirique mettant en avant la fragilité de l’ego masculin dans le cadre d’une société ultra capitaliste. Finalement, comme le rappelle Collider, il faut penser à Patrick Bateman moins comme un être humain que comme quelqu’un se faisant passer pour un être humain. Lorsqu’il essaie de faire des choses “normales”, sa voix devient par défaut celle d’un représentant commercial.

American Psycho est le film qui a officiellement fait de Christian Bale une star. Et ce n’est pas seulement son corps ciselé et sa voix vide et commercialisée justement qui ont fait de sa performance une révélation, mais aussi son comportement qu’il a “emprunté” à une source qui peut paraître surprenante au premier abord, un autre acteur qui l’a aidé à trouver son Bateman intérieur.

En effet pour créer sa créature humanoïde emblématique, Christian Bale s’est inspiré de “ l’intense gentillesse ” avec “ rien derrière les yeux ” d’un certain Tom Cruise ...

Des points communs ?

Oui, on parle bien du vrai Tom Cruise , l’icône du cinéma qui défie la mort à chaque tournage. Dans une interview accordée à BlackBook en 2009, Mary Harron avait en effet déclaré que Christian Bale l’avait appelée un jour et lui avait dit qu’il avait eu un éclair de génie. En essayant de comprendre à quel point Bateman était “ martien ” et comment il “ regardait ce que les gens faisaient et essayait de trouver la bonne façon de se comporter ”, Bale est tombé sur une conversation entre Tom Cruise et David Letterman et a noté que l’acteur “ avait cette amitié très intense sans rien derrière les yeux ”, et il a été inspiré par cette énergie.

Tom Cruise a suscité beaucoup de respect au fil des années, étant constamment présenté à la fois comme un acteur extrêmement talentueux et polyvalent, et comme l’une des personnes les plus gentilles et les plus magnétiques que vous puissiez côtoyer. Mais cette réputation a toujours été accompagnée par une acceptation tacite : il semble “intense” – à commencer par la façon dont il se lance dans tout ce qu’il fait avec une énergie débordante.

Puisque Christian Bale l’a cité comme source d’inspiration, on ne peut désormais s’empêcher de tenter de trouver des similitudes entre l’acteur et le personnage. Patrick Bateman prend une autre dimension si on commence à regarder American Psycho à la recherche d’œufs de Pâques en forme de Tom Cruise ! Peut-être la façon dont ce dernier parle dans les talk-shows, surtout lorsqu’il passe en mode représentant commercial “à la Bateman” ? On peut aussi dire que l’acteur et le personnage s’efforcent tous deux de s’adapter et de se conformer aux attentes de la société – comme le démontre les choix de rôles de Tom Cruise au fil du temps.

Tom Cruise a su s’adapter à la société qui l’entoure

Un autre trait en commun : tous deux souhaitent “s’intégrer”. De toute évidence, Tom Cruise a consacré sa carrière à devenir l’une des plus grandes stars du monde et à faire ce qu’il fallait pour conserver cette position.

Et il a fait les bons choix en changeant de décor pour satisfaire ce que le public attendait de lui. Il a travaillé avec des cinéastes tels Tony Scott et Francis Ford Coppola dans les années 80, puis s’est consacré, corps et âme, à la franchise Mission: Impossible . Il a également développé son jeu d’acteur dramatique avec des films comme Jerry Maguire et Magnolia dans les années 90 et reste engagé à être l’une des plus grandes stars d’action aujourd’hui avec des projets comme Top Gun: Maverick – et des Mission: Impossible encore et toujours.

Bien qu’il n’ait jamais joué un personnage ressemblant exactement à Patrick Bateman, d’autres de ses rôles ont présenté des traits similaires à la personnalité du psychopathe notoire, qui aurait pu inspirer Christian Bale également.

Dans Magnolia (1999), il incarne un orateur charismatique masquant une profonde insécurité quant à sa relation avec son père. Dans Collatéral (2004), il est un assassin sociopathe qui a canalisé sa philosophie de vie vers le meurtre. Jerry Maguire (1996) le présente comme un puissant agent en col blanc remettant en question ce qui est important dans la vie.

Et puis, il y a bien sûr Entretien avec un vampire (1994), même si on peut attribuer la personnalité psychopathe et meurtrière de Lestat au fait qu’il soit un vampire de longue date – mais cela ne l’excuse pas entièrement. Face à lui, Louis ( Brad Pitt ) choisit un autre chemin, un chemin qui ne le mène pas à tuer tout ce qui bouge.

Quoi qu’il en soit, Tom Cruise charme son public et a finalement le don de s’adapter à son époque et de satisfaire les attentes du moment, ce qui rappelle – de façon non psychopathe bien sûr – la philosophie de Patrick Bateman qui consiste à s’adapter à tout ce que la culture qui l’entoure lui dit être “cool”.

Au fil des ans, le dévouement de l’acteur à son travail n’a fait que s’intensifier, sa carrière ayant évolué par rapport à ce qu’elle était à ses débuts. On est loin de l’époque où il était un outsider, et on a maintenant affaire à un homme qui risque constamment sa vie à l’écran pour notre plaisir – avec une priorité : plaire à tous les publics.

À l’inverse d’ailleurs, on peut imaginer que Patrick Bateman serait peut-être lui aussi inspiré par Tom Cruise ...
