Great tour leader! Energetic and friendly. Didn’t take into account varying abilities. Great participants but the energy level of the tour was a bit much for me. Didn’t like racing down the trail. Approaching 70, maybe tour wasn’t right for me. Itinerary was lousy except for two days: inside passage and Icefields highway. Good time overall. Thanks, Storm!

The trip was absolutely brilliant and highly recommended! Breathtaking landscapes, many animals and a super group! We were very lucky with the weather except 1 time. Unfortunately, we could not visit Maligne Lake due to snowfall. The personal highlight for me was the whale tour in Victoria. We saw a lot of orcas, fantastic! The only thing I would add is 2 full days in Victoria. We had 2 nights but only 1 day of that available. The morning was Butchers Garden and the afternoon was whale watching. So you could not visit the city of Victoria well.

the tour itself was amazing. The national parks do not disappoint. The travel accomodations were very cramped and uncomfortable. I am only 5 foot tall and I was cramped in this 14 passenger van. Food opportunities were limited.

Majestic Alaska (10 Days) Tour

Majestic Alaska (10 Days)

I cannot speak highly enough of this tour. Kris, our tour director, as well as our driver Rose and wellness director Tyler, were all friendly, knowledgeable, and excited to share Alaska with us. Kris is such a warm people-person and consistently went over and above to make this tour what it was, including staying up one night and waking those of us on his list who wanted to see the Northern Lights. The itinerary was no doubt well laid out, but Kris added so many special touches to support Alaskan businesses but also to provide us with extra opportunities to connect with local Alaskans and have the most comfortable and enjoyable experience possible. September was a perfect time to experience this tour. My travel friend and I would highly recommend this trip.

Alaska Denali Expedition - 12 Days

It was my first group trip and also my first camping trip. I have to say it was one of the best trips I've been on. It was an adventure! We were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights at Remote Camp. Tory and Dave took care of everything and made sure everyone had a great time. No matter what problem you had, they always helped each other! Dave cooked delicious food, we had marshmallows by the fire in the evening and it felt like family. It's a great tour and I can only recommend it to anyone! It certainly wasn't my last tour with Infinite Adventure! Many thanks to Tory, Dave and Natalie (who you could ask any question you wanted to know beforehand) for this unforgettable time! :)

Financial protection

Just like having personal travel insurance, booking with a company that’s registered with both ABTA and ATOL is absolutely essential.

The collapse of UK based Thomas Cook – a 100-year-old travel company in 2019, and COVID-19 was a stark reminder that you must always travel with a company that is protected against bankruptcy!

Fortunately, Topdeck and Contiki are both ABTA registered, and ATOL protected, meaning you are completely covered if anything should happen.

ABTA enforces specific standards and ensures that your holiday is protected in the event of the company going into liquidation.

Having ATOL protection means that if the company folds before or during your travel, you get your money back – and you receive support if you’re already travelling.

Websites & communication

I highly doubt if a company’s website will be the deciding factor in who you book with. Still, it could affect your decision if the level of information varies between the Topdeck and Contiki websites.

Both operators have aesthetically pleasing and mobile friendly websites, but in my opinion, the way tour information is presented on Contiki’s website is much better than Topdeck.

Contiki makes use of bright icons and text boxes to highlight essential information such as tour inclusions, booking terms and conditions and optional activities. They also have a much more beautiful itinerary layout compared to Topdeck and include faqs and more reviews.

One thing I especially love about the Contiki tour pages is the combinations of official photos with those taken by past Contiki passengers for that particular tour. It gives you an honest snapshot of what to expect on a Contiki tour.

After almost one year of talks, Topdeck launched their new-look website in 2019 and I was disappointed. I was expecting so much more from Topdeck. The site looks like it’s stuck in the early 2000s.

Both operators have a live chat feature on their website, but unlike Topdeck, Contiki’s chat is not available 24/7.

Deals & discounts

Topdeck and Contiki are known for offering a range of deals and discounts to help make their tours more affordable for young travellers. These deals can include early booking discounts, last-minute deals, group discounts, and loyalty programs. Early booking discounts are often offered for travellers who book their tour several months in advance. These discounts can vary depending on the tour and the time of year, but they can often save travelers anywhere from 5% to 15% off the tour price. For example, Topdeck currently offers an early booking discount of up to 10% off selected tours when booked by a certain date. Last-minute deals are also commonly offered by Topdeck and Contiki, with discounts ranging from 10% to 30% off the tour price. These deals are often available for tours that are departing within a few weeks or months and are designed to fill empty spots on the tour. For example, Contiki currently offers last-minute deals on selected tours departing within the next few months, with savings of up to 30% off the tour price. Group discounts are also available for travellers who book a tour with friends or family. These discounts can vary depending on the size of the group, but they can often save travellers anywhere from 5% to 10% off the tour price. For example, Topdeck offers a group discount of 5% off the tour price for groups of 4 or more people. Loyalty programs are also available for repeat customers of Topdeck and Contiki. These programs offer rewards and discounts for travellers who have completed a certain number of tours with the company.

Choosing the right tour company for your next adventure is an important decision that can greatly impact the success and enjoyment of your trip. Both Topdeck and Contiki are reputable and well-respected tour companies that cater to young travellers. To help you make an informed decision, here are some final thoughts and tips:

  • Consider your travel style and interests: Topdeck and Contiki offer a range of tour styles and destinations, so it’s important to choose the one that aligns with your travel style and interests. Think about what you want to get out of your tour and choose the company that can offer the experiences and activities that excite you the most.
  • Compare prices and inclusions: While Topdeck and Contiki offer similar tours, there can be differences in the price and inclusions. Be sure to compare the prices of similar tours and consider what is included in the tour price. This will help you choose the tour that offers the best value for your budget.
  • Read customer reviews: TourRadar is a great resource for reading customer reviews and ratings of Topdeck and Contiki tours. By reading reviews from past travelers, you can get a sense of what to expect from the tour experience, the quality of the tour guides, and the overall value for money. This can help you make an informed decision about which tour company to choose.

top deck north america tours

Let’s face it; we love the feeling of being on top of the world, and North America just happens to be home to a slew of awesome observation decks. If you are looking to do something a little daring and more than ordinary on your next vacation, why not climb to the top and enjoy the view. From glass boxes 110 stories up, to glass floors looking across entire states, the choices are endless. From New York to Las Vegas to Toronto, explore the 12 best observation decks in North America.

13. Willis Tower (The Ledge) -Chicago, Illinois

Go up 110 stories above downtown Chicago to experience one of the most thrilling observation decks in the world. Four glass boxes make up ‘The Ledge’ located in the Willis Tower, formerly known as the Sears Tower. Over a million people visit these boxes annually, which protrude 4.3 feet out into the air. The Ledge has been home to many proposals and people can even get married in them. On a clear sunny day it is possible to see four different states over 50 miles. Not for the faint hearted, these glass boxes truly make it feel as you are standing in thin air. What better way to see the striking city of Chicago than from high above.

12. CN Tower -Toronto, Ontario

The CN Tower in Toronto offers not one but two observation decks. The first is the famous glass floor which looks down some 1,122 feet into the city below. The floor has been designed so visitors can jump on it, lay down on it and even run on it. Don’t worry, they promise it won’t break. Also on this floor is the outdoor sky terrace where you can take in views of the city. The SkyPod is up to 1465 feet and although you are indoors, this all glass observation deck gives panoramic 360 degree views of the surrounding area. On a clear day visitors can see up to 100 miles, all the way to Rochester, NY. For those true daredevils, the CN Tower offers an Edge Walk which puts visitors 1168 feet above ground, straps them into a harness and lets them walk around the Tower’s main pod.

11. Theme Building Observation Deck -Los Angeles International Airport

Although this is definitely not the highest observation deck on this list, it is incredibly cool. Based at the Los Angeles airport this 1961 tribute to the flying saucer underwent a $12.3 million renovation. New security apparatuses and structural upgrades were done to improve it. The design was originally designed by Disney and invites both flyers and non flyers to come use the free telescopes to watch the planes take off and land. The outdoor observation deck offers 360- degree views. This tower also offers a space theme restaurant where visitors will feel as though they have entered the world of ‘The Jetsons”. For anyone who loves planes, this is definitely the observation tower for them.

10. Top of the Rock -New York City

This is the first of three observation decks in New York City that have made it onto this list, perhaps because the city itself is unbelievably striking when looked at from above. The Top of the Rock is located in midtown Manhattan at the historic Rockefeller Center. Visitors at the top will have one of the best views of Central Park without it being too windy or too cold, a complaint other observation decks have around this city. The view as the sun is setting is one of the most popular times to go so be sure to buy your tickets ahead of time and show up early to avoid long waits. There are a total of three levels once you reach the top and make sure to explore all of them as they offer different views.

9. Calgary Tower -Calgary, Alberta

Calgary’s claim to fame isn’t just the famous annual Calgary Stampede. It also is home to the Calgary Tower which at 1228 meters above sea level is the highest 360° observation deck in the world. Getting to the top of this tower is half the fun with the multimedia tours that are now included with the price of admission. Guides will take you through the history of the city and some of its iconic landmarks as you ride the elevator to the observation deck. The deck itself is outfitted in a glass floor and provides panoramic views of the city. Visitors are now treated to touch screens which highlight some of the landmarks that you can see from the tower and provide facts and information about them. You won’t find a better view of the city than from this observation deck.

8. Stratosphere Tower -Las Vegas, Nevada

The Stratosphere Tower in Las Vegas opened in 1996 and captured the attention of locals, tourists and even celebrities. The tower itself is 1,149 feet tall with an outdoor observation deck that sits at an astonishing 869 feet high. The views are incredible and the deck offers a 360-degree of the entire city. During the day the views are of the city and surrounding mountains but it is at night when this tower really comes alive. Dusk brings a multitude of colors as the setting sun turns the sky into shades of orange and pink and the strip comes alive below you. There are plenty of things to do at the top of this tower including thrilling rides that dangle you over the side, places to eat, a gift shop and even a cozy bar to have a drink at.

7. Clingmans Dome Observation Tower -Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee

This 54-foot observation tower isn’t the easiest one to get too but the views from the top can be absolutely breathtaking. The tower is located on the summit of Clingmans Dome, the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and offers spectacular 360° views of the Smokies and beyond. Visitors will have to be willing to climb the steep half-mile walk to the tower at the top though. The road is paved making things a little easier but it is important to note that the hill is too steep for wheelchairs. It seems the earlier the better to catch an amazing sunset and avoid the crowds of people. Morning is also when the clouds are often low and you can see far out above them. Nature at its finest, this observation deck is a must do.

Clingman's Dome

6. Space Needle -Seattle, Washington

It takes only 41 seconds to whiz up the elevator to this observation deck located in the Space Needle in the wonderful city of Seattle. The deck sits up 520 feet and offers amazing panoramic 360-degree views of the city. Visitors will be privy to views of the Mountains including Mt. Rainer, the bustling waterfront and the city streets below. The camera at the top allows each visitor to take the perfect sky high selfie, for free. Just use your ticket, stand back and smile; the picture will be emailed to you later that day. There is an abundance of technology inside the observation deck as well, giving people information on how many visitors have been through, where they came from and more. This interactive experience coupled with spectacular views makes this observation deck once of the best in North America.

5. The Infinity Room at House on the Rock -Spring Green, Wisconsin

The House on the Rock could just be home to the world’s most bizarre and vast collection of stuff. But the real treat here is the Infinity Room, or as some call it the weirdest but coolest observation deck in North America. What is it exactly? The Infinity Room is an enclosed, pointed platform with 3,200 windows. These windows provide a gorgeous view of the surrounding forest. But what makes this room unique is the fact that it starts at a reasonable 30 feet wide, but tapers to just one inch at the end. The optical illusion when you are standing at the entrance is truly intimidating. Just be prepared to walk through some pretty strange and unusual rooms that feature everything from the world’s largest cannon to carnival games to mannequins to reach this observation deck.

4. Glacier Skywalk -Banff, Alberta

Located on the icefields parkway, this skywalk/observation deck is home to some of the best views in Canada. The metal walkway with its glass viewing platform is on the border of both Banff and Jasper National Park, giving stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Suspended 720 feet above ground, visitors will gain an understanding of the glaciology, wildlife, flora and fauna that is below. An interactive storytelling experience paves the way for a new kind of skywalk that combines thrills, exceptional views and education. See the beauty of the West Coast from a different perspective and be one of the first visitors to this stunning deck. Operating from May until October this new attraction has garnered the attention of thousands of visitors already.

3. Empire State Building -New York City

It may just be the most famous observatory deck in the whole world, with dozens of films being done here and millions of memories being made. Sure it can be cold and windy, but not much can beat the view from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building. The deck wraps around the entire building and offers views of Central Park, The Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty and many more iconic landmarks. High powered binoculars and multi-media handheld devices are there to enhance your experience. If you want to go higher, visitors can take the manually operated Otis elevator to the 102 floors where buildings can be seen up to 80 miles away. The entire city comes into view while looking out the windows on this floor. Whichever deck you choose to visit; the view of the city will be something captured in your memory forever.

2. Grand Canyon Skywalk -Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Grand Canyon National Park has always been a popular tourist spot with its striking and dramatic landscape, interesting history and picturesque photo opportunities. The Skywalk was established in 2007 to allow visitors to walk out above the canyon floor and give them the experience of a lifetime. The horseshoe shaped platform extends 21m out and is 4,000 feet above the canyon floor. It gives views into the gap of the canyon itself along with the Colorado River. The experience is meant to make you understand how grand and vast this canyon actually is, and it surely does not disappoint with its all glass floors and epic photo opportunity. It is important to note that it will cost visitors a hefty admission fee to walk the Skywalk and there are no cameras or phones allowed on, so pictures will also cost you a pretty penny.

1. One World Trade Center -New York City

The newest observation deck in North America also happens to be the tallest on this list at 1,776 feet. Visitors now have the chance to head up to the 100th floor of the One World Trade Center via SkyPod, a particularly fast elevator that whips you up in less than 60 seconds. Floor-to-ceiling LED technology in each elevator will offer a time-lapse of the development of New York’s skyline from the 1500s to today. Other experiences that await visitors here is a program that tells the personal stories of those who helped build the World Trade Center, a short presentation about life in NY and breathtaking 360-degree views of the city. Interactive technology is located throughout the deck and it truly promises to be one-of-a-kind.

A different kind of group tour.

Do the words ‘group’ and ‘tour’ conjure up cringeworthy middle-school memories of school trips? Does an organised trip abroad leave you imagining a regimented itinerary that ticks off only the ‘must-see’ sights? Does the idea of following a flag pole through crowds of people make your skin crawl?

Yep, us too. That’s why we took all  that  and promptly threw it in the garbage bin (then set it alight. Too far?).

Trips with Topdeck aren’t your usual group tour experience. Yeah, we might go to the same destinations but we do what others don’t – bring places to life. And our Ecuador & Galápagos trip is no exception.

Forget seeing La Compañia through the dusty bus window. Or not having enough time to explore Cotopaxi National Park. The huge solar storm is keeping power grid and satellite operators on edge

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this image of solar flares early Saturday afternoon. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm.

Planet Earth is getting rocked by the biggest solar storm in decades – and the potential effects have those people in charge of power grids, communications systems and satellites on edge.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm that has been visible as aurora across vast swathes of the Northern Hemisphere. So far though, NOAA has seen no reports of major damage.

There has been some degradation and loss to communication systems that rely on high-frequency radio waves, NOAA told NPR, as well as some preliminary indications of irregularities in power systems.

"Simply put, the power grid operators have been busy since yesterday working to keep proper, regulated current flowing without disruption," said Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Boulder, Co.-based Space Weather Prediction Center at NOAA.

"Satellite operators are also busy monitoring spacecraft health due to the S1-S2 storm taking place along with the severe-extreme geomagnetic storm that continues even now," Dahl added, saying some GPS systems have struggled to lock locations and offered incorrect positions.

NOAA's GOES-16 satellite captured a flare erupting occurred around 2 p.m. EDT on May 9, 2024.

As NOAA had warned late Friday, the Earth has been experiencing a G5, or "Extreme," geomagnetic storm . It's the first G5 storm to hit the planet since 2003, when a similar event temporarily knocked out power in part of Sweden and damaged electrical transformers in South Africa.

The NOAA center predicted that this current storm could induce auroras visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama.

Around the world on social media, posters put up photos of bright auroras visible in Russia , Scandinavia , the United Kingdom and continental Europe . Some reported seeing the aurora as far south as Mallorca, Spain .

The source of the solar storm is a cluster of sunspots on the sun's surface that is 17 times the diameter of the Earth. The spots are filled with tangled magnetic fields that can act as slingshots, throwing huge quantities of charged particles towards our planet. These events, known as coronal mass ejections, become more common during the peak of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.

A powerful solar storm is bringing northern lights to unusual places

Usually, they miss the Earth, but this time, NOAA says several have headed directly toward our planet, and the agency predicted that several waves of flares will continue to slam into the Earth over the next few days.

While the storm has proven to be large, predicting the effects from such incidents can be difficult, Dahl said.

Shocking problems

The most disruptive solar storm ever recorded came in 1859. Known as the "Carrington Event," it generated shimmering auroras that were visible as far south as Mexico and Hawaii. It also fried telegraph systems throughout Europe and North America.

While this geomagnetic storm will not be as strong, the world has grown more reliant on electronics and electrical systems. Depending on the orientation of the storm's magnetic field, it could induce unexpected electrical currents in long-distance power lines — those currents could cause safety systems to flip, triggering temporary power outages in some areas.

The storm is also likely to disrupt the ionosphere, a section of Earth's atmosphere filled with charged particles. Some long-distance radio transmissions use the ionosphere to "bounce" signals around the globe, and those signals will likely be disrupted. The particles may also refract and otherwise scramble signals from the global positioning system, according to Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with NOAA. Those effects can linger for a few days after the storm.

Like Dahl, Steenburgh said it's unclear just how bad the disruptions will be. While we are more dependent than ever on GPS, there are also more satellites in orbit. Moreover, the anomalies from the storm are constantly shifting through the ionosphere like ripples in a pool. "Outages, with any luck, should not be prolonged," Steenburgh said.

The radiation from the storm could have other undesirable effects. At high altitudes, it could damage satellites, while at low altitudes, it's likely to increase atmospheric drag, causing some satellites to sink toward the Earth.

The changes to orbits wreak havoc, warns Tuija Pulkkinen, chair of the department of climate and space sciences at the University of Michigan. Since the last solar maximum, companies such as SpaceX have launched thousands of satellites into low Earth orbit. Those satellites will now see their orbits unexpectedly changed.

"There's a lot of companies that haven't seen these kind of space weather effects before," she says.

The International Space Station lies within Earth's magnetosphere, so its astronauts should be mostly protected, Steenburgh says.

In a statement, NASA said that astronauts would not take additional measures to protect themselves. "NASA completed a thorough analysis of recent space weather activity and determined it posed no risk to the crew aboard the International Space Station and no additional precautionary measures are needed," the agency said late Friday.

While this storm will undoubtedly keep satellite operators and utilities busy over the next few days, individuals don't really need to do much to get ready.

"As far as what the general public should be doing, hopefully they're not having to do anything," Dahl said. "Weather permitting, they may be visible again tonight." He advised that the largest problem could be a brief blackout, so keeping some flashlights and a radio handy might prove helpful.

And don't forget to go outside and look up, adds Steenburgh. This event's aurora is visible much further south than usual.

A faint aurora can be detected by a modern cell phone camera, he adds, so even if you can't see it with your eyes, try taking a photo of the sky.

The aurora "is really the gift from space weather," he says.
