Music Fans, For $15 You Can Take an Exclusive Tour of Third Man Records in Detroit

On a recent afternoon, I found myself contemplating the number three as two friends and I took a tour of Third Man Records. We joined a group for one of three tour times offered that third Friday of the month in Midtown Detroit .

Our guide explained that Jack White, founder of Third Man Records , opened an upholstery business over 25 years ago. He was the third upholsterer from his block and so he named it Third Man. It was at that point on the tour we encountered the couch, made by White himself, with three seats in three colors that appeared over and over and over again.

Couch Upholstered By Jack White/Third Man Upholstery

The color red represents the White Stripes, the band Jack and Meg White formed in 1997 which found worldwide success. Yellow, Pantone 109C to be precise, represents Third Man Records and its predecessor upholstery shop. And thirdly, the color blue represents live music in the Third Man-verse.

But that’s not where the threes stop – even the tour itself had three parts.

Display Inside Third Man Records Detroit

Part 1: The Record Store

We began in the storefront – the space where anyone can enter and browse during normal business hours. One of three locations – the others being in Nashville and London – Third Man is a music store and so much more.

Detroit’s Cass Corridor location opened in 2015. The decor, the merchandise, and the employees are decked out in yellow, black, and white.

All records sold in the store are pressed there. While the label started with the music of The White Stripes, today you can find artists ranging from Patsy Cline to Jay Z to Coldplay.

A stage sits in the back third of the store, constantly enveloped in blue light. When the store transforms into a concert venue, musical artists perform intimate shows, which are recorded live in a single uneditable take.

Our tour guide pointed out the large collection of albums near the stage – all with blue sleeves – of shows recorded, mastered, and pressed on-site.

Third Man Records Pressing Plant Through Windows

Part 2: How a Record is Pressed

Part two of the tour was the pressing plant, established in 2017. The plant employs manual and automatic presses using a combination of vintage and new technology and techniques.

The record pressing process starts with the completed album on a lacquer – a disk similar in shape and size to a record but made of aluminum.

From the lacquer, the “mother” stamper is created, which in turn is used to create the production stampers, which press the albums. PVC pellets slide down a hopper which melts them into a “puck” (referred to as a “biscuit” everywhere outside of Hockeytown).

The puck goes into the press to be smooshed between the stampers, and the extra is trimmed off the edges. Once it cools, the record is ready for playing.

Our guide explained all this as we stood outside the factory looking in through a large window. The first thing you notice about it is that yellow color.

How many factories are built with an aesthetic in mind? I admit, I haven’t been in too many factories, but I’m guessing not that many. It is also immaculately clean to keep dust and debris from getting into those record grooves.

Into the Plant

We then stepped through the doors and into the otherworldly hustle and bustle of the pressing plant, a rhythmic harmony of machines stamping away and steam hissing through the intricate crisscross of pipes above us. Water powers the whole process, heated to meticulously controlled temperatures as even slight fluctuations could impact quality.

The smell of warm PVC filled the cavernous room unnoticed by the employees who had become used to it; we were assured the air quality was closely monitored.

To the side of the machines, stacks of pressed records sat to finish cooling and setting. Someone nearby checked the quality of the sound. Approved albums were packaged and prepared to send out.

Objects Made From Records At Third Man Records In Detroit.

Interactive Delights

Just inside the plant sat a table covered with records in different colors, small bowls of colorful PVC pebbles, and unpressed pucks.

The urge to reach out and grab struck me hard and gratefully, our guide permitted us to touch. These were the samples, the discards, and the mess-ups, now providing us laypeople with a tactile experience.

The items demonstrated another layer of artistry that goes into creating the records – while it’s mostly about the music, the physical object itself is also a work of art. Third Man can make records not just in vinyl black, but in color, with sparkles, or translucent.

Some of the mess-ups see another life as sculpture, bent into boxes, flowers, or the trees on display for the holidays.

Third Man Records, Third Man Mastering

Part 3: Music Mastering

Part three of the tour was the part I didn’t see coming. We moved out of the factory and traveled through the staff kitchen and three sets of doors to arrive at Third Man Mastering.

Starkly quiet in contrast to the plant floor, the room is red and yellow and filled with sound-mixing controls, speakers, and a comfy couch.

Sitting in one corner is an unassuming piece of equipment to the layperson but the linchpin in the whole operation: the 1974 lathe that produces the lacquer from which all the records originate.

In this room, the sound is mixed and mastered and readied for the big time. Our guide explained how it all works and the rarity of the process and equipment. Then she asked for a volunteer.

Displays At Third Man Records

Master of Sound

No one else in our group moved so I took that as my cue to step forward. She pointed out a dial for the volume. Taking Me Back, a song from Jack White’s recent album, had been playing silently in the background this whole time, and now it was time to find out what sound could sound like.

I slowly turned the knob to the right and the sound rose. I then turned it a little higher. I checked in with my group – was everyone ok to go louder? They assured me that yes, they were, so I turned the dial some more.

The tiny room had the effect of making me feel like I was in the song, with guitar and synthesizer riffs whizzing past me on all sides and drums grounding me in place.

Sheer Mag Sign to Third Man, Announce Tour and Share New Song: Listen

By Nina Corcoran

Sheer Mag

Sheer Mag are back and they’ve signed to Third Man Records . To herald their return, the rock band has announced a tour and shared the new song “ All Lined Up ,” along with a music video directed by Matt Palmer. The clip is a snapshot of late-night hours spent hanging with friends at a dive bar: dim lights, beer-and-a-shot combos, and endless rounds of pool. Check it out below.

The partnership came about when Sheer Mag reached out to Third Man directly, according to Third Man’s Ben Blackwell. “Having been aware of Sheer Mag since their earliest 7-inch singles and keeping up with their self-released, independent, DIY take-no-prisoners ethos, I never envisioned a world where they would ever sign to a record label,” he said. “So imagine how ecstatic we were at Third Man when the band reached out to us directly and asked if we’d be interested in partnering with them. Still doesn’t seem real. We are beyond honored, humbled really, to receive their handshake and their trust. This is gonna be fun as shit.” The label will also reissue the band’s back catalog.

Sheer Mag will hit the road this month for a tour that stretches into the fall. The North American trek begins on August 15 in Winooski, Vermont, and will last until December 1 in the band’s hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Find their complete list of tour dates below.

A Distant Call , the band’s most recent album, came out back in 2019. Sheer Mag have been fairly quiet since then, getting a nod from Bernie Sanders at a campaign rally that same year and rolling out the song “ Crushed Velvet ” for Hulu’s film The Ultimate Playlist of Noise in 2021.

Third Man Records Announces New Jack White Live Album from Current Supply Chain Issues Tour

by Jacob Uitti September 12, 2022, 8:10 am

Third Man Records has announced a new Jack White live album, Vault Pkg. #54 – Jack White Live: The Supply Chain Issues Tour , which is set to drop later this year.

Videos by American Songwriter

The new package includes selections of live recordings from White’s current tour over three LPs, one of which is black, one blue, and one white.

Fans can sign up for the vault package HERE . The deadline to do so is October 31 at midnight CT.

The album includes the full set from July’s intimate performance at London’s Union Chapel.

This year, White has already released two new studio albums, Fear Of The Dawn and Entering Heaven Alive .

“To celebrate the explosive run of shows, having received some of the most rave live reviews Jack has ever seen in his 20-plus year career onstage, Third Man Records’ 54th Vault package is dedicated to the best of the best, the 3xLP  Selections From The Supply Chain Issues Tour ,” the press release about the new live issue reads.

“Disc one (pressed on blue vinyl) features the best live recordings of songs from the bombastic, fiery album  Fear Of The Dawn.  While the studio takes are taut and muscular and finessed, these live renditions of songs like ‘Taking Me Back’ and ‘The White Raven’ expand beyond that idea, where they are able to luxuriously conjure musical themes and chase avant garde tangents and ultimately deliver versions that land light years beyond their initial counterparts.

“Disc two (pressed on white vinyl) features Jack White’s show at Union Chapel in London in its entirety. An intimate, emotional concert performance dedicated to his son Henry Lee with songs dedicated both to Jack’s wife, Olivia Jean, and his daughter, Scarlett, along with first-ever live performances of the tracks ‘Help Me Along’ and ‘I’ve Got You Surrounded (With My Love)’ and ‘Taking Me Back (Gently)’ the whole show was nothing short of spellbinding and the sentimental feeling in the room that night is clearly evident in the grooves of this record.

“Disc three (pressed on black vinyl) is the wildcard. With the dynamic band of Dominic Davis on bass, Daru Jones on drums, and Quincy McCrary on keyboards, Jack has been, more so than ever before, truly improvising compelling cover songs and brand new, off-the-top-of-his-head compositions. With covers ranging from the public domain ‘Wayfaring Stranger’ through the Stooges’ ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’ to the D.O.C’s ‘It’s Funky Enough’ and the Monks ‘I Hate You’ across a gamut of blues essentials like ‘I’m A Man’ and ‘Cool Drink Of Water Blues’ and ‘Born Under A Bad Sign’…it’s a true treat to hear the band snatch these moments out of the unrehearsed ether. Beyond that…true original songs like ‘That’s How I’m Feeling Right Now’ and ‘Yes, I’m So Sick’ and ‘When I’m Home You Can Feel The Tension’ are legitimately ecstatic, memorable explorations that belie the fact that they are 100% spontaneous compositions, written on the spot during the live shows.

“And just for the hell of it, we’re including a 7” single of ‘A Tip From You To Me’ complete with the previously unreleased solo acoustic demo of the song on the b-side…pressed on sparkly blue vinyl. As should be expected, the cover art fits into the ten-years-running tradition of Jack White album single images that fit in neatly with each other…now totaling SIXTEEN entries into the ever-expanding, ever-impressive tableau.”

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. London Marathon live: Emile Cairess dedicates third place finish to cousin after coma ordeal; winner of women's race breaks world record

Two Britons finished third and fourth in the men's race at the London Marathon 2024, on a historic day for equality for disabled athletes. Meanwhile, a world record was broken in the women's race, as a record number of competitors took part in the public run.

Tilly Gerra is running her first London Marathon and she's in good hands - her guide runner is on his 15th overall marathon and his ninth in London.

The pair teamed up last year when Tilly, who is completely blind, was looking for someone to run with.

"I was born with a condition which means that my eyes are a lot smaller than normal. They didn't develop properly, so I have no sight at all," Tilly told Sky News.

The 19-year-old said her condition had never stopped her before, and described her family's reaction to her decision to run the London Marathon.

" For me, it's just normal. My parents treated me the same as everyone else. My dad showed me how to ride a bike because he thought I want to treat her like all my other children, and they never stopped me from doing anything," she says.

"They've all been really supportive and really encouraging. I think my mum's probably more stressed than I am about me running the marathon, but she's been a really big help, making sure I'm prepared for my running."

Tilly's guide runner is Peter Rodwell, who had just completed a course in guide-running when he was approached by Tilly last summer.

"Guide running means helping Tilly navigate the obstacles of the course. I have to tell her where the trees are, where we're turning left and right, when we're going uphill, downhill, onto level ground. She tends to listen to a podcast or music instead of me. But touchwood, we've never had a tumble," he says.

Peter explains that he runs side-by-side with Tilly and then lets her cross the finish line first.

He says: "We did a 5k race and we were coming up to the finish line, and I actually went across the line in front of her, and there was a fellow from English Athletics there, and he came up to me and he said, 'excuse me guide. Next time you race, can your runner cross the line first and not you'. So I've got to hold on."

Tilly and Peter set a target to finish today's London Marathon in just under six hours.

"I've only been running for five months," Tilly says.

"I think I'm just happy to finish on such an amazing course as London that's really rich in its history."

McFly drummer and former Strictly Come Dancing champion Harry Judd ran for The Children’s Trust.

He completed the course in three hours 23 minutes and 40 seconds.

Speaking during the race, he said: "The atmosphere is amazing.

"The crowds are out in their thousands, and loads of amazing runners have charities donned on their t-shirts."

Former health secretary and I’m A Celebrity contestant Matt Hancock was among those to complete the gruelling course.

The West Suffolk MP, who lost the Tory whip over his appearance on the reality show, is stepping down at the next election.

He completed the 26.2-mile race in three hours 55 minutes and 37 seconds.

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe completed his eighth London Marathon before heading to Wembley to watch his team take on Coventry for a place in the FA Cup final.

If you thought running the marathon dressed as a tap might alienate you from all the other participants, you'd be sorely mistaken.

We've seen some other bizarre records broken today alongside the fastest marathon dressed as a tap.

Here are just a few of our favourites, courtesy of Guinness World Records.

Speaking of world record breakers, we've got another one for you now in Marcus Mumford (not the singer).

The 45-year-old from Worcester has run the fastest marathon while dressed as a tap, adding to his accolade of fastest run dressed as a toilet in 2014.

"I’m working my way around the bathroom items," Marcus said, adding: "People didn’t really know what I was.

"I was called a weather vane, or a radio station..."

He said the run was for Water Aid – "a fantastic charity."

More reaction now from a race winner, and this time it's new world record holder Peres Jepchirchir.

The reigning Olympic champion crushed the women's-only record, crossing the finish line in 2:16:16 to break Mary Keitany's mark of 2:17:01.

The 30-year-old Kenyan said she expected a fast race and for the record to get beaten, but added she "was not expecting it to be me".

"It's because I believe in myself," she said.

"As I crossed the finish line, I thought about how grateful I am for this to be my last event representing Kenya before I head to Paris [for the Olympics]. I now know I have a great chance to defend my title in Paris."

Emile Cairess said his remarkable third place finish was for his cousin, who was left in a coma after a car crash earlier this year.

Cairess, who finished in the second fastest time by a British man - in two hours, six minutes and 46 seconds - said his immediate thoughts were with his 22-year-old cousin, Oliver Burton.

He said he was still in hospital after being in a coma for a month, but came out of intensive care a few days ago.

"He's my little cousin, like a little brother to me, and a couple of months ago he was in a bad accident," he said.

"It was so stressful, it was touch and go at some points but he’s made a fantastic recovery in the last couple of weeks.

"This morning I was really emotional. Hopefully I've made him proud today."

The run is expected to have cemented Cairess' place in the GB Olympic team this summer.

We're starting to see runners cross the finish line in droves now, as we near four hours since the majority began.

Here's a look at those who have already finished.

Most have their foil capes draped around them as they treat themselves to a well-earned rest.

When it comes to the marathon, even the most bizarre and impractical costumes tend to have an admirable purpose to them.

This can certainly be said of the rhino suit being donned by David McNab.

David has set himself the rather niche goal of running the fastest marathon in a rhino costume to raise funds for Save the Rhino International.

The current rhino costume record stands at four hours six minutes, he told the PA news agency.

"I worked as a ranger in South Africa for a long time so I know the trouble that rhinos are in," he said.

"They need all of the help they can get, and it’s a really cool thing to do, I think."

He said the costume weighs about 10kg and, rather predictably, is "a little bit uncomfortable".

"It's going to be a big challenge, but that’s part of it," he concluded.
