Zaha Hadid for Milan: Generali Tower
Zlata Golaboska
Travel tips for metropolitan city of milan.
From Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, Da Vinci to Hadid, Aulenti , Rashid, Herzog and de Meuron and more , let me introduce you to the magical Italian architecture. What we learned from the Renaissance , is that Italy is the country that gave birth to the biggest names in art and architecture. A conclusion based on the contemporary aspect, is that nowadays Italy and its heritage - that serves as an environment or context- is a muse, and an inspiration to the most famous artist and architects of the modern era.
Zaha Hadid is one of the most famous contemporary architects, and according to many, one of the brightest architect of all times. She was the first woman awarded with a Pritzker price . At the beginning of her career, she was known as an architect only "on paper" , because her first projects never got executed in real life. When you see her projects, it is easy to realise why it was needed time for this architectural style to be brought in life. The world needed courage and skills. Over 30 of her "on paper" projects are already built, three of which, are based in Italy : the MMM Corones on Kornplatz, the MAXXI museum in Rome and the Generali tower in Milan.
Milan, Italy
Generali tower in milan.
This elegant skyscraper, 185m tall, was finished in 2017, a year after Zaha's death. The tower is twisted and the geometry of the general shape is reached by rotating the plan on each floor and changing its dimension. As the tower rises offering extensive views across Milan , the twist orientates the tower's upper floors to the main southeast axis, leading to Bramante’s 15th Century church Santa Maria della Grazie.
This building, nicknamed as " Lo Storto" , or, " The Twisted One" , stands next to Arata Isozaki's 202-metre high Allianz Tower, which was completed in 2015. These two are waiting to compete with the third tower in this "ensemble", the Studio Libeskind's 175-metre tall PwC tower , which will be completed in 2019. The elegant forms of these towers are going to fulfil uniquely the skyline of Milan. A ll of them are part of the project CityLife, and when fully completed, they will be the largest new civic space and public park, welcoming more than seven million of visitors, workers and residents each year.
Generali Tower, Milan
This is some "freshly made architecture" promising to bring an iconic landmark. Bookmark this spot and enjoy its breathtaking architecture.

Generali Tower
Milan, Italy
Project by Zaha Hadid Architects London, United Kingdom
Photographer: Hufton + Crow
Photographer: Luke Hayes
The “twisting” tower in Milano City Life, named today Generali Tower, Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects powerfully soars above the city, being anew landmark with a futuristic mood. The Architecture of the tower is visible, what we don’t see but makes such a peculiar building physically feasible, are the structures, visible only when the construction is growing. This is the result of the Structural Design by Redesco (Research-Design-Consulting), a true Italian excellence in the engineering sector that has authored the structures of some of the most important buildings of the recent modernisation of Milan. The Tower Conceiving and developing the structures for the Generali Tower has been the perfect example of Structure-Architecture interaction. Starting from a complex set of problems, Redesco team applied an holistic approach based on the premise that “simplicity is complexity resolved” (K. Brancusi), thus imagining and implementing a structural system that did match with Architecture, safety, economy, functionality and buildability in the most efficient way. From the beginning of the project, some main challenges had to be addressed: above all how to cope with the torsion of the tower, induced by the warping of the columns around the core, while choosing the most efficient materials, shapes and construction methods. Once set the conceptual basis of the project in terms of structural members lay-out, Redesco decided, after a thorough evaluation of structural alternatives, to go for a reinforced concrete structure, being the one that maximized the benefit/cost ratio. A more efficient structure albeit extremely more complex to design and calculate than any solution made of steel. Concrete means a highly non-linear material: the structure’s deformations are evolving during and after construction. To control and forecast with precision the evolutive behaviour of the structure has been the key to success, not only in order to understand how internal forces and stresses changed in the structural organism, but moreover to allow the façade, internal elements, installations to be designed to strict tolerances and no waste. The complexity of the spatial resisting phenomenon of the Tower required to dwell into the most advanced Structural Engineering tools and methods, and to perform a substantial amount of research. The leading of ZHA proved to be a key factor to success, since the strict and creative cooperation with the Architects lead to a clean, simple, extremely optimized layout of the structure and a deep coherence of all the building’s elements. Similar to the challenge of structural physics, the innovation of this project consisted in implementing a method that would pair with the parametric approach of Zaha Hadid Architects. All structural simulations, analysis, drawings and detailing were developed with advanced tools and in-house software that followed the mathematical method set by the Architects in designing the Tower’s shape. The whole Structural Design, from concepts to final construction documentations, has been created by means of parametric tools. The final stage of the Design has also been implemented in BIM, in full coordination with other Design disciplines. Redesco’s role in the Generali Tower Structural Design has been extended from the initial conceptual stages all the way through to the Construction phase, so that we had the chance to follow the design until the tiniest detailing, rebar scheduling, steelwork joints and details and moreover to cooperate with the Contractor in defining construction methods, sequences, monitoring of the structural behaviour and checking of results. The Podium Redesco has been in charge of the Structures of the “free form” volume of the Podium, which is the visible part above the upper plaza level. The complexity of this Structure arises from the coexistence of an extremely high number of constraints: from one side, the columns could only rest on the regular grid of the parking structures below, on the other side, the freedom of form, internal arrangement, density of functions of the Podium asked for an extremely sophisticated structural strategy. The structural arrangement was born by parametrically coupling of the external surface to be respected and the internal constraints: the whole structural frame was generated automatically by combining all the constraints in a graphic algorithm. Based on this frame, that includes very long spans, column deviations and cantilevers, optimization and recurrent operations have been carried on the structural members in order to achieve the maximum cost-efficiency and structural soundness. All the structures are in steel, including the façade sub-structure that consisted in many hundreds of different frames. Finally, one of the most challenging aspects of the structure is its being built across a series of structural joints: joints between different parts of the underground parking structure and joints between the Tower base and the surrounding systems. A sophisticated study of details and structural behaviour, that allows each different part to settle independently, has been carried on. Also for the Podium Redesco has been appointed to design and follow the Structures from the conceptual stages down to the detailing and construction phase.

zaha hadid's generali tower in milan documented in new images by hufton + crow
the citylife masterplan has transformed milan’s abandoned trade fair grounds into a vibrant new residential, commercial, and business community district. the site, which occupies more than 90 acres, includes buildings by by zaha hadid , daniel libeskind , and andrea maffei . in addition to shopping districts and corporate offices, the site is now fully open to the public, providing new civic spaces, parks, and residential areas. when fully complete in 2020, citylife will be the largest new civic space and public park created in the city in 130 years.
aligned at ground level with three of the city’s primary axes that converge within citylife, the 170 meter (558 ft) generali tower — designed by zaha hadid architects — connects with its surrounding public piazzas and park. as the 44-storey structure rises offering broader views across the italian city, the twist orientates the tower’s higher floors to the primary southeast axis leading to bramante’s 15th century tribune of santa maria della grazie, and beyond to the city center.
‘this vortex of centripetal forces at ground level is transferred vertically through the tower by realigning successive rhomboid-shaped floor plates to twist the tower about its vertical axis,’ explains zaha hadid architects. ‘this helical twist reduces incrementally with the height of each floor above street level, giving all floors a fractionally different relationship to the floors above and below.’
once its interiors are completed in summer 2018, the tower will house up to 3,900 generali employees. from a sustainability perspective, the structure’s double-façade of sun-deflecting louvers flanked by glazing provides extremely efficient environmental control for each floor and ensures excellent energy performance. generali tower has also been certified as LEED platinum by the US green building council. see designboom’s previous coverage of the project here .
UPDATE: this project has been shortlisted in the ‘completed buildings – office’ category and for the ‘engineering prize’ at the 2019 world architecture festival .

Zaha hadid architects' twisted generali tower in milan photographed by hufton+crow, italy architecture news - apr 27, 2018 - 03:00 22727 views.
Zaha Hadid Architects has completed the Genera Tower in Milan, featuring a twisted geometry within the CityLife masterplan. The masterplan transformed Milan’s abandoned trade fair grounds following the fair’s relocation to Rho Pero in 2005. The building has been photographed by architectural photographers Hufton+ Crow in detail.
Named Generali Tower, the tower, reaching 170-metre height, will house up to 3,900 employees to meet their continued growth as one of the world’s largest financial institutions when its interiors to be completed this summer.
The 44-storey tower is located above the new Tre Torri station on Line 5 of the city’s metro system. The CityLife masterplan opens the 90-acre site to year-round public use for the first time, providing new civic spaces, public parks and residential areas designed by Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind, and Andrea Maffei, in addition to shopping districts and corporate offices.
When fully complete in 2020, CityLife will be the largest new civic space and public park created in the city since Parco Sempione opened 130 years ago; welcoming more than seven million visitors, workers and residents each year. CityLife will include 1,000 new homes, offices for more than 11,000 staff, the new 42-acre public park, piazzas and kindergarten.
"Aligned at ground level with three of the city’s primary axes that converge within CityLife, the 170m (44-storey) Generali Tower connects with its surrounding public piazzas and park; the curvilinear geometries of its podium defined by the perceived centripetal forces generated from the staggered intersection of these three city axes at the tower’s base," stated ZHA in a press statement.
"This vortex of centripetal forces at ground level is transferred vertically through the tower by realigning successive rhomboid-shaped floor plates to twist the tower about its vertical axis. This helical twist reduces incrementally with the height of each floor above street level, giving all floors a fractionally different relationship to the floors above and below," the firm added.
"As the tower rises offering broader views across Milan, the twist orientates the tower's higher floors to the primary southeast axis leading to Bramante’s 15th Century tribune of Santa Maria della Grazie, and beyond to the centre of the city."
The tower is designed by considering Milan’s rigorous local building codes for high-level energy efficiency. Its double-façade of sun-deflecting louvers flanked by glazing provides extremely efficient environmental control for each floor and ensures excellent energy performance, contributing to Generali Tower’s LEED Platinum certification by the US Green Building Council.
The studio uses inclined perimeter columns, following the twisting geometry of the tower, to mirror the inclined alignment of its external façade units. These perimeter columns also maximise usable office space within the tower’s coherent formal envelope.
"An integral element of the CityLife redevelopment that has created a new civic, residential and business district near the centre of Milan, Generali Tower is defined by its surrounding urban fabric to connect directly with the city," added ZHA.

Generali Tower in Milan Building
The project is located at the intersection of several important urban axes. The dynamism of the surrounding urban fabric was the subject of ZHA’s formal investigations and inspired the geometry of the tower, podium and the residential buildings.
The housing complex includes seven linear buildings and develops in two areas of the estate separated by a wide public pedestrian boulevard which visually and physically connects to the Citylife Park and the fore coming Hadid Tower.
The sinuous profile of the rooflines, repeated over the entire complex, increasing in height from the five-floors building on Piazza Giulio Cesare, to the tallest, a 14 storey building, unify the seven buildings’ skyline and become a “fifth elevation” of the Generali Tower complex: www.zaha-hadid.com/architecture/citylife-milano
The layout of the buildings determinates de facto a courtyard typology from which the duality of the relationship between the buildings and the surrounding urban fabric came. The facade facing out, where the living rooms are, have large windows and deep balconies to take advantage of views over the city and the future park. Wood cladding on the more protected interior facades facing the courtyard, the side with mostly bedrooms and kitchens, creates a feeling of domestic intimacy.
The tower is at the centre of a vortex generated by a series of paths which converge in the park. The curvilinear geometries of the tower’s podium, animated by these tensional forces, emerge from the ground where the pedestrian paths and retail gallery converge.
This torsion is transferred throughout the tower – the real core of the vortex – transforming horizontal energy into vertical thrust. The tower is conceived as a stack of equivalent, economically efficient floor slabs that incrementally twist about a vertical axis. This incremental twisting is algorithmically controlled so that each floor does not have the same angle, but has a fractional, relational angle to the floors above and below, further developing the dynamism of the tower.

Zaha Hadid Architects – Generali Tower + CityLife Residences, Milan

CityLife is a large (and controversial) urban redevelopment project on the grounds of the former Trade Fair of Milan, whose new buildings were designed by three of the world’s most recognized architects: Daniel Libeskind, Arata Isozaki, and Zaha Hadid. In this article, I’ll focus on the buildings by Zaha Hadid Architects , which include a residential complex and a 44-story office tower, commonly dubbed as Lo Storto (The Twisted One). In general, the buildings designed by Zaha Hadid in Milan show all the architectural elements, someone could say all the clichés, which make the design of the Iraqi-British architect, who passed away in 2016, so recognizable; from the fluid and “aerodynamic” forms of the residences to the twisted shape of the tower, which makes it looks like built of some sort of elastic material. Whether you like it or not, all this is eminently “zahahadidian”; maybe it’s not her best architecture, yet those buildings indubitably bear Hadid’s stylistic and conceptual hallmark.
Lo Storto (aka Generali Tower) The construction of the Generali Tower, so-called because it houses the headquarters of the insurance company Generali since 2018, was completed in 2017. The tower is a 170-meter / 559-foot-high skyscraper built above a retail center, the Podium, designed by Zaha Hadid as well. On a portion of its 150,000-square-meter gross floor area, the reinforced concrete-and-glass tower accommodates over 2,000 employees of Generali. Looking at it from a close distance, this high-rise building caused me mixed feelings. On the one hand, its twisted shape makes it a fluid-looking building, whose dynamicity is further enhanced by the large aluminum-clad ribs which visually split the tower into two halves. The trapezoid floor plans of the building progressively rotate about 30 degrees from bottom to top. Such rotation involves only the outer part of the tower, while the building’s stiffening core – which contains the technical spaces, bathrooms, two staircases, and ten elevators – is perfectly straight, bottom to top. On the other hand, compared to its geometric form, the Generali Tower’s glass envelope is quite dull, dark, and leaden even on a Summer sunny day, and very different from that depicted in the original renderings which show more “ethereal”, silvery facades. Furthermore, the gigantic red-colored Generali logo, installed on top of the tower in 2018, fatally flaws the graceful slenderness and dynamic lightness of the Building envisaged by Zaha Hadid.

CityLife Residences Completed in 2014, three years before the Generali Tower, the CityLife Residential complex designed by Zaha Hadid consists of seven buildings , with a total gross floor area of 38,000 square meters / 409,000 square feet divided into 230 apartments, together with a 50,000-square-meter underground car park. Unlike the Generali Tower, the plastic shapes of the residences emphasize their horizontal lines. Their distinctive architectural feature is a sequence of curvilinear balconies – clad with aluminum panels, glass, and Canadian red cedar horizontal planks – which gives the buildings a vaguely “geologic” look, as they were sculpted by wind and water. Such a horizontality is also present in the interiors, further accentuated by the use of ribbon windows, and substantially differentiates Hadid’s residential complex from that designed by Daniel Libeskind nearby, which is marked by strong vertical lines instead.

Zaha Hadid Architects Present Erosion Collection
Zaha hadid architects new collection crafted from carrara marble.
April 17, 2024, 4:09 pm 0 Comments
Zaha Hadid Architects , renowned for their avant-garde approach to architecture and design, presented their latest masterpiece, the Erosion Collection , in Milan this week. Collaborating with Neutra , the collection delves into the interplay between materiality, time, and form. At the heart of this collection are the Minera Table and Branch Console , two pieces that not only redefine furniture but also celebrate the beauty of natural stone transformed by the passage of time.
Crafted from the finest Carrara marble, the Erosion Collection challenges conventional distinctions between furniture and sculpture. The fluid forms and sinuous lines of these pieces evoke the organic erosion processes found in nature, inviting viewers to contemplate a different concept of spatial design.
The Minera Table stands as an example of precision craftsmanship and material integrity. Carved from a single block of marble, its undulating surface echoes the erosive patterns seen in nature. Despite its substantial dimensions—measuring 320 x 160 x 72 cm—the table exudes a sense of grace and lightness, inviting interaction and conversation. Limited to just eight pieces, each Minera Table is an expression of elegance and exclusivity.
In contrast, the Branch Console embodies a delicate balance between solidity and weightlessness. Its design conjures images of symmetrical branches reaching towards the sky. The seamless integration of form and function is evident as two branches rise from the base to cradle the expansive surface of the console. This design creates a captivating central void that enhances the ethereal qualities of the piece, inviting observers to explore the interplay of positive and negative space.
The Erosion Collection by Zaha Hadid Architects for Neutra represents a harmonious fusion of art and design. By exploring the inherent beauty of natural materials and the transformative power of time, these pieces transcend functionality to evoke a sense of wonder and contemplation.
