Kevin Costner's new travel app will narrate your next American road trip

Kevin Costner has co-founded an audio entertainment app for road-trippers across the US © HearHere

Oscar-winning actor, Kevin Costner, has co-founded an audio entertainment app for road-trippers across the US . HearHere is an iPhone app that tells travelers the stories of the people, places and histories of the land they're traveling through, presented in a travel podcast format.

A campervan heading to Yosemite National Park

With international travel curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, road trips are becoming an increasingly popular option. HearHere describes itself as a network of stories, told by master storytellers like Costner and Hall of Fame basketball coach Phil Jackson, with the power to bring a location's landscape, people and history alive as you pass through it. At present, it is offering more than 1500 stories covering the west coast of California , Oregon and Washington on the iPhone app, and by next summer, it plans to offer more than 10,000 stories covering the entire US on both Android and iOS.

Co-founded by Woody Sears, Bill Werlin and Kevin Costner, the audio vignettes combine to paint a picture you’re unlikely to get from a history book or visitor's guide. The app's subjects include history, sports, culture, music and geology, and listeners can stream five stories for free. Following the free trial, the app's annual $49.99 (€42.15) subscription is being offered at the promotional price of $24.99 (€21.08) until 31 August 2020. The subscription includes offline listening for future or home listening.

“I love stories,” Costner writes. “I am the guy that stops at the historical markers along the highway—usually bringing moans from everyone in the car. But it was this continuing curiosity that I began to think HearHere could satisfy without anyone having to leave the car. Why couldn’t we replicate every marker along the highway—even expanding from the usual paragraph in bronze that always left me wanting more.”

Kevin Costner's Road Trip Audio App Will Now Be Available on JetBlue's In-flight Entertainment — and He Told Us All About It

The Oscar-winning star of ‘Yellowstone’ talks exclusively to Travel + Leisure about his travel app Autio’s newest partnership.

When Kevin Costner travels by plane, he’s always focused on the journey ahead, usually mentally going through his checklist so that he can hit the ground running.

“But when I do look out the window, my imagination is full,” the Academy Award-winner told Travel + Leisure exclusively on Monday. “I wonder what went on down there on the land below.”

It’s that kind of thoughtful musing and curiosity that led the 68-year-old history buff to co-found the travel app Autio , formerly HearHere , which offers more than 10,000 pieces of audio content that bring American landmarks to life, as told by the most compelling storytellers, including former basketball player Phil Jackson, actor John Lithgow, and Costner himself.

Launched in the midst of the pandemic in 2020, the travel story library was originally intended to accompany roadtrippers on their drives. But starting Wednesday, Autio is taking to the skies in a newly announced partnership with JetBlue , which will provide passengers with access to more than 250 stories in 29 American destinations that can be streamed on the Avant seatback screens , which are available on about half of its fleet.

“People want to be productive with their time, even in a leisurely way,” the Yellowstone star said of using the app aboard flights. “Even for world travelers, the only things you are going to learn will come out of the mouths of other people, out of the books you read, and out of some other experiences someone offers you.”

It’s that kind of connection with place that has driven Costner’s global travels, as less of a vacationer and more of a student of the world, he told T+L.

“I’m kind of an explorer or a treasure hunter,” he admitted, sharing that one of his favorite activities is diving around historical ships, which he has done everywhere from South Africa to Cuba. “I'm in search of the history of that ship…not just something shiny that I might find. I'm really interested in the drama of things.”

That mentality rings true on the ground too. Take, for example, one of his favorite regions in his home state of California, the Central Coast, which he recorded the Autio intro for.

“I've had a renewed interest in what's happened here,” he says, explaining that despite the Tribal Wars, the native communities had reached some sort of harmonious “equilibrium” before “we came and stuck our finger on the ant hole.”

"Now I find myself venturing out in the Central Coast just looking for early maps that overlay the great Spanish land grants," he said. "That’s become interesting to me.”

But just because he’s always scouring for historic clues doesn’t mean he’s all business. “I'm always trying to double up on my pleasures, which is scouting and then making my way to hot springs,” he said with a laugh. “There's something very medicinal about them — and you realize that everybody for the last 15,000 years knew exactly what to do when they came upon one: they took their clothes off and got into it!”

Universal human instincts like that are especially meaningful to Costner since it connects us to a time gone by.

“I can sit where early man may have sat for thousands of years and know exactly what to do,” he said. But it also demonstrates how important it is to preserve the land around us.

Costner’s innate passion for meaningful travel stems from childhood memories of car trips to California's High Sierras.

“We were camping on the lowest level,” he remembered of sleeping in tents and cooking on Coleman stoves. “Those things marked me forever.” And one mountain sense has especially stuck with him: “I remember the smell — just being with my pop and sitting on the rocks. It was a scent I never lost.”

Nowadays, he has a different kind of road trip routine, with three kids and two dogs in the backseat — all who have no nose for nostalgia.

“I'm trying to get their noses out of their games,” he admitted. “I talk with them, but I am unsuccessful. They look at me and they go, ‘Yeah Dad,’ and put their nose right back in.”

So he does the only thing that will work: he stops the car and nudges them to go read the historic markers. “They hate those signs and start to moan,” he admitted. “I go, ‘It’s only one paragraph!,’ but it’s tough.”

That was exactly what sparked him to develop Autio — to lift history off of the static signs and into engaging stories that connect us with the lives lived by those who previously took those footsteps.

And there’s something about the discovery on the open road that he can’t deny.

“It’s a throwback,” he said. “People used to see the country from the back of a horse. The car is the next best thing and these roads can take you to spots that you'll never ever forget."

Whether or not you get a taste of the app on your next JetBlue flight, download Autio in the Apple App Store for access to five free stories (or $36/year for unlimited access), which can be location-based for real-time storytelling or interest-based to gain a greater appreciation for America's greatest landmarks.

If you’re headed out on a great American road trip, flip on Autio, an audio entertainment app that tells the stories, secrets, and lesser-known histories of the people and places you pass on the highway. We love how Autio’s audio stories (read by a cast of narrators including John Lithgow, Phil Jackson, and the app’s cofounder Kevin Costner) dig deep into major destinations and landmarks as well as often forgotten stories.

This is an excellent app

I am a startup lawyer and I help a ton of app developers. I have pitched this exact app to a bunch of them because I wanted to see an app like this made. The teams all concluded the same thing: it would take a Herculean effort before any revenues would come. This would be a passion project more than a simple utility application. I believe that is correct but I think the team at here hear have found the right people who are passionate about learning and sharing because this app is excellent. The experience is great and the content is solid. This is a perfect application for someone who travels a lot and tends to have their nose buried in a guidebook or loves reading the plaques at historic sites. I’m so excited this app is here.

Inaccurate and with bugs

I’d love to give this a 5 star and review and maybe in time once the bugs are works out I will. However, the information on many “stories” is rather inaccurate. I will give one as example here. The story on East Stroudsburg, PA states it was originally named “Danville” when it was actually named “Dansbury”. Danville is a completely different town in PA. Also, you reference the historic train depot in East Stroudsburg which is a rather significant piece of their history. You also wrongly named that as the Pocono Depot I believe. The train depot is actually Dansbury Depot, always was and still is as it ran its last route through there in 1970. Some very large inaccuracies on this topic here. Lastly, once you complete one story it automatically feeds into the next and you get “charged” for a second story which was not the intended. Some large bugs and inaccuracies to work through before I can rate this higher. I give two stars because the idea of it is great, but it needs to be factual.

Taking a Road Trip? This App Will Tell You the History of the Places You're Passing

By jake rossen | aug 28, 2020.

The HearHere app offers audio stories that relate to the things and places you see during a road trip.

Road trips have become a form of escape for people in recent months owing to the coronavirus pandemic. Providing travelers observe social distancing measures during stops and plan carefully, they can be a safe way of visiting new places and getting in a change of scenery.

Now, a new iPhone app backed by Kevin Costner can help provide some context. It’s called HearHere , and it offers details on the history and attractions found along your route. As you drive, you’ll hear audio vignettes roughly two to three minutes in length that relate to the surrounding landscape. See that nearby mountain? HearHere might tell you how it got its name. Spot a historical marker along the highway? You’ll get the story.

The app was created by entrepreneur Woody Sears and former North Face president Bill Werlin. Costner, a co-founder of the company, provides some of the narration. The app currently offers roughly 1500 stories covering California, Oregon, and Washington, with plans to expand to more than 10,000 stories covering the entire United States for both iOS and Android by next summer. Listeners can tell HearHere to offer stories based on interests, from history to sports .

HearHere offers five stories for free, with a $49.99 annual subscription being offered for a promotional price of $24.99 through August 31. It’s available in the App Store.

Let Kevin Costner Narrate Your Next Road Trip with the HearHere App

Due to COVID-19, most of us won’t be going anywhere international for a while. For the foreseeable future, travel means road tripping . Sadly, crisscrossing the U.S. these days has become more about efficiency and “making good time” than slowing down and enjoying the ride. But, if the Great American Road Trip is as much about the journey as it is about the destination for you, Kevin Costner has a few words for you — literally.

HearHere provides historical audio tidbits about thousands of destinations along the Pacific Coast. Subscribers download the app and pick their interests from niche topics like history, local insights, sports, music, and natural wonders. Using GPS, the app can automatically play relevant “stories” about their location. This includes places like Crystal Cave (“Sequoia National Park’s secret underground world”) and the story of Northern California’s Shell Money (“the most precious currency of the Redwood Empire’s first people”). For out-of-the-way destinations, the content can also be downloaded for offline listening anywhere you might not have cell reception. The audio clips are narrated by Kevin Costner, legendary basketball coach Phil Jackson, and more.

The app was started by Costner and co-founder Woody Sears to keep road trippers engaged and off their phones and tablets. They recognized that seeing somewhere or something truly incredible isn’t always enough to appreciate it fully. Their collaboration is designed to dive deeper than the cursory descriptions found on official highway markers and placards to give a real sense of place.

In his words, Costner is the nerdy dad who relishes every roadside turnout and scenic vista. “I love stories,” he writes on the HearHere blog . “I am the guy that stops at the historical markers along the highway — usually bringing moans from everyone in the car. But it was this continuing curiosity that I began to think HearHere could satisfy without anyone having to leave the car. Why couldn’t we replicate every marker along the highway — even expanding from the usual paragraph in bronze that always left me wanting more.”

On a visit to Italy, there’s almost too much to see and do. If you’re a car enthusiast, a guided trip through the Ferrari museums in Maranello or Modena offers a singular experience. For a mix of historic charm and coastal refreshment, the Amalfi Coast delivers in spades. Then there’s the cuisine, from pizza Napoletana in Naples to sweet Tiramisu in Venice.

In May, the weather’s sweet, and the prices are reasonable, giving you abundant travel options. In the Northern Hemisphere, the world awakens from its winter slumber, birds sing, and nature blooms, creating a rejuvenating mood.

When the day of a trip arrives, there’s a feeling of freedom and excitement. Whether you’re going for some spring skiing in Lake Tahoe, or visiting Italy’s Amalfi Coast, it’s a time to relax and unwind and experience new things. But airport hangups can throw a wrench in your plans.

Flight delays and cancellations, lost baggage, and hidden fees make your getaway a hassle, producing long waits and questionable charges. But all that’s set to change with the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) new rules for airlines. For travelers, they’re a game changer. Here are the details. New DOT regulations save travelers money

Kevin Costner’s new app narrates your trip. We gave it a road test.

HearHere tracks your location to load audio stories about the stops along your route

travel app kevin costner

Kevin Costner says the best way to see America is on the back of a horse. But what if you’re not an Academy Award-winning actor and filmmaker who regularly saddles up to shoot westerns?

“You see it by car,” the “ Yellowstone ” star said in an interview with The Washington Post.

Despite his preference to travel like a cowboy, Costner reveres the humble road trip . That sentiment led him to partner with HearHere , an audio app designed to entertain drivers and their passengers with stories about the U.S. landscapes around them. Whether you’re driving down a freeway or backcountry road, the app promises to illuminate the trip with short bursts of information about the local history, culture, nature and mythology.

6 alternatives to America’s most popular national parks

HearHere uses geolocation technology to queue up 8,800 stories narrated by voice actors, including celebrities such as Costner, former Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson, actor John Lithgow and Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell. The stories automatically start playing when travelers pass featured locations. If the app is closed, it sends you a notification when you have activated a story.

Throughout his life, Costner said, he has been compelled to pull over at landmarks to read about a place, no matter how interested his traveling companions were in an impromptu history lesson.

“There’s something terribly satisfying in the learning process when it’s not really shoved down your throat and to understand where you’re walking or you’re driving through,” Costner said. “Our intention is to go deeper and deeper into those stories.”

I told Costner about the short road trip I was taking with my dad near Sierra National Forest, a place not too far from the parts of California where the actor and I both grew up. He immediately regaled me with stories full of geological and cultural facts about the region full of geological and cultural facts.

I decided to try the app myself to see how storytelling could inform my own road trips. Here’s what I learned from the test drive.

How to ski like a local in a mountain resort town

For the full experience, you’ll have to subscribe

You can listen to five stories with a free account, but the stories aren’t very long — usually just a couple of minutes. You could easily run through those freebies before your road trip has really started.

In California, I downloaded the app for my iPhone and paid $35.99 for a one-year membership. There are weekly subscriptions, too, for $29.99. If paying for a “road trip app” seems like too much of a niche purchase, note that you don’t have to be in a car to use it. You can fire it up on trains or buses, open it up at home to learn more about your neighborhood or listen to stories while you’re visiting a new place on foot.

Listen to your dad: Get up early on vacation

My dad and I hopped into the van to drive into the mountains, and the first story we listened to was about my hometown, Fresno. Apparently the city’s name is the Spanish word for ash tree because the county is full of them. Somehow, in 18 years of living there and 13 years of visits, I had never learned that. About nine short stories later, I felt much more in touch with my home state.

To get the best use of the app, download stories offline before you start driving, or at least while you have cell service. I didn’t, and I regretted it once my dad and I began twisting up mountain roads. Not only did I get carsick, we couldn’t listen to many stories for the rest of the trip.

The app is part entertainment, part icebreaker

Beyond providing educational entertainment, Costner sees the app as a conversation starter for families.

“I’m having a hard time with my own kids getting their nose out of their computers and I don’t think I’m the only one,” said Costner, a father of seven. “I know it’s biblical that your kids don’t listen to you, but I find that they’ll listen to this a little bit.”

“Sometimes when you hear a story together, it kind of bonds you,” he added.

On my trip, the app did inspire conversations beyond the usual small talk catching up on family news. After listening to a story about Fresno’s Forestiere Underground Gardens — a national treasure built by a Sicilian immigrant in the 1900s — we reminisced over our own family visit to the site when I was a kid, as well as the loose connection that my parents now love traveling to Sicily.

The app doesn’t shy away from America’s ugly history

Before he agreed to get involved, Costner had one stipulation: HearHere had to tell stories about Native Americans , “because there is no HearHere without who was here first,” he says. The app needed to offer a robust account of American history, including the negative parts.

“It’s horrible in so many ways, but I’m not embarrassed to learn about it,” Costner said. “It allows for more empathy to understand how people were shoved out of here. … The depth of displacing people is not something we will ever overcome but if we choose to forget it then we’re really in a lot of trouble.”

One story got me and my father talking about the incarceration of Americans of Japanese ancestry during World War II. My dad told me that he worked in a building that was once part of a detention camp for Japanese Americans in the 1940s. During my dad’s career, a Japanese firm purchased the company. I never would have learned this without HearHere sparking the conversation.

I survived a Japanese American internment camp. We cannot forget that history.

Listening will make you want to plan a road trip

My main takeaway from testing the app was that I’m not taking enough road trips.

Instead of seeing long drives as a painful form of transportation, I should be seeing them as a way to slow down, learn more and connect with my travel partners. Plus, Kevin Costner loves them, and apparently I am easily influenced by Kevin Costner.

“We’re used to taking everything for granted. Everything is at our fingertips now; there’s not anywhere you can’t go,” Costner said. “But to go across the country, you have to make an effort. Make the effort. Get a part of doing something that isn’t easy, and you’ll never forget it.”

Once he started dispensing advice, Costner got on a roll: “Get in the car. Take your kids. Take your friends. Stop. Find a campground. Find a museum and ask how the name of the town came to be. … Just try it. You’ll never — almost never — regret it.”

What is Autio?

The famous location-based storytelling app HearHere was relaunched as Autio, an audio experience that unveils the intriguing tales behind the most interesting sites in the United States, just in time for the summer travel season of 2022.

Autio was founded in August 2020 by Woody Sears, Bill Werlin, and award-winning actor, director, and producer Kevin Costner as HearHere, with just 1,500 stories concentrated on the West Coast. Nearly two years later, the app had been downloaded over 500,000 times and features over 9,000 stories from throughout the United States.

Subscriptions are available for iOS devices through The App Store; a free account offers access to only five tales, while an annual membership of $36 enables unrestricted access to all of them.

Autio, part tour guide, half mini-podcast, delivers a mix of entertaining information and deep dives in readily consumable audio segments that you can listen to while driving - geolocation allows it to see where you are and share tales about the areas you're driving through. If you won't be traveling for a long, the app may be used to inspire future journeys; simply click on the dots for the areas you'd want to learn more about.

Several Autio stories are presented by Costner and other celebrities, like actor John Lithgow, famous basketball coach Phil Jackson, and singer Chuck Leavell, while others are delivered by prominent historians and Indigenous leaders, providing educational insights as extra context for more complicated themes like the Wounded Knee massacre in South Dakota and the treatment of Japanese American soldiers during World War II.

Autio focuses on lesser-known locales and their histories, in addition to important landmarks and renowned national parks. Clicking through the app exposes a choice of stories spanning all 50 states on a wide range of subjects and interests. It's also gratifying to see that the app doesn't shy away from telling stories of some of America's worst events, notably those involving the country's Indigenous peoples.

Who are the founders of Autio?

Woody Sears, Bill Werlin, and Kevin Costner established "HearHere" in 2020. It was rebranded as Autio in June 2022.

Kevin Costner is one of the co-founders of this firm; he is also a producer and actor. He has won two Academy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards for his work.

This company's co-founder and content developer is Bill Werlin. He was born in Colorado Mountain Territory and spent his childhood working in a ski resort with his family.

This company's co-founder and CEO is Woody Sears. He received his MBA from Pepperdine University. He has garnered several honors, including Innovation Awards, iKids Awards, and others.

It all began for Woody and Kevin when their children began playing together at school, prompting both sets of parents to meet and eventually become friends. Kevin's wife later urged him to learn more about Woody's app concept, since he enjoys stopping to study historical monuments while driving. The thought of delving into the histories of the locations you're visiting without being tethered to technology seemed very appealing.

"The app supports this kind of disconnect where you aren’t watching the clock anymore, you’re putting miles on there, you’re going places, and you have a chance to settle in and understand that there’s this gigantic history,” said Kevin. “There’s blood everywhere and there’s drama everywhere. There was loss as much as gain, and every inch [of land] was fought over. And you honor it when you know a little more about it."

Kevin related some of his early exploits, such as camping excursions to Yellowstone National Park and how, at the age of 18, a chance meeting with several fellow travelers led to an extraordinary summer working on commercial fishing boats in Alaska.

"What happens is the scales come off your eyes when you get off the beaten path or if you talk to strangers, to people from other places," Kevin explained. "And so the road is not dreary. It’s like watching nature. Sometimes, you don’t think it moves. If you’re there long enough, you see the movement. You get on the road, okay, it feels like a ways to go, but if you relax with it, the scales come off your eyes."

"The information is really few and far between for the places in between and the roads less traveled in more rural areas outside of national parks and on the way to them, so it just felt like there was so much great content here that was untapped,” said Woody. “I just pound, and I will continue to pound into the culture of Autio to keep going there because those stories are not good," said Kevin. "They’re vicious. And they’re repetitive. And you quit seeing the freeways, and you start seeing these places where there was great drama occurring, and you think, oh my God."

Learning about the history of the locations we're visiting — or hearing additional narratives about places we believe we already know — adds a whole new depth to the experience for Woody and Kevin.

"We expand our world when we step out. We’re not explorers necessarily, but when we do, we come back bigger people. When you see it from horseback, when you see it from a car, you’re adding to your Rolodex of what you know, what you’ve seen, and you can become a more expansive person just by doing a road trip," Kevin explained. "And with the application, you don’t have to stumble on those round markers, you don’t have to stop, you can keep going. You can just have a richer experience."

The three founders of Autio, Bill Werlin, Kevin Costner, want you to enjoy a memorable journey (Autio)

What is the cost and how to subscribe to Autio?

The app is completely free to download and contains five tales. A $36 yearly subscription allows you to use the full library. Members of the RV club Good Sam receive a $19.99 annual discount. All the stories in this app are centered on that location's culture, history, local insights, music, natural marvels, and sports.

After using this app, you will be able to listen to 5 tales for free before having to purchase a 30-day, 1-year, or 3-year plan. Stories can also be downloaded and listened to offline. This software is available for iPhone and has received over 500,000 downloads.

Where is Autio now?

"Our main goal is to create these discovery opportunities and provide these thoughtful stories about your surroundings that allow you to really explore and engage with them," said Woody. “We initially created the app to provide these user-friendly audio programs for all travelers. Staying true to that, we wanted to expand what we’re offering so it can be utilized in more places—traveling virtually from home, during walks, trips where you fly and drive, and trips where you fly and don’t drive—so it really opens it up to a variety of uses and has a broader reach."

Autio has collaborated with The Moth, a nonprofit storytelling organization dedicated to highlighting marginalized perspectives. Every Autio membership purchased will contribute $1 to The Moth Community Engagement Program, which will fund initiatives such as the Black Voices Project and the Veterans Voice Project, among others.

This entertainment firm, HearHere, was founded in August 2020 with 1500 stories in the West Coast area. This software is now only accessible to iOS users, but it will soon be available for Android users as well. Woody had previously built Zuuka, an iStoryTime library app that was eventually sold. This subscription-based audio road-trip app received $1.6 million in pre-seed investment in 2021.

Kevin is Woody's neighbor, and he loved the company idea so much that he decided to invest in it. This app will have 5,500 tales from 22 states available in 2021. According to TechCrunch, the firm secured $3.2 million in a seed round headed by RV and outdoor store Camping World in February 2022.

This app won the Webby Award for Best Travel App in 2022. This is an excellent tool for learning about the history of a location.

Who will steal the deal?

We think this will get a deal. Kevin has worked on a number of films and television shows for Sony Pictures, which owns the 'Shark Tank' franchise. He is obviously familiar with the show's producers, as well as the Sharks themselves. His involvement suggests that the company is well-funded. However, this may simply be an elaborate commercial for Autio. We believe they will strike a deal with one or more Sharks to increase the app's exposure. It remains to be seen if it will close.

Woody will pitch the panel of five Sharks on the business and its prospects for growth (ABC)

AAA Washington Talks Road Trips and Travel Apps with Kevin Costner

The Actor/Director Says Love Of Country Led Him To Co-Found The Storytelling Startup, Hearhere

Video: Kevin Costner discusses family road trips and HearHere

BELLEVUE, Wash. — An investment in new mobile travel and audio entertainment platform, HearHere, turned AAA Washington (based in Bellevue) and actor/director Kevin Costner into strategic business partners. Costner, a Co-Founder of HearHere, sat down with AAA Washington’s Director of Travel Products, Lisa Anciaux, to discuss his passion for road trips and learning about the history and people of a region. HearHere provides real-time, location-based stories — some told by Costner himself — to curious road trippers, a group AAA has served for decades.

“I love stories and I guess there’s no real secret about that,” Costner told Anciaux. With a chuckle, he added, “I’m also the guy in my family that stops at all the historical marks along the highway. It usually brings moans from my children, from everyone in the car, but it was this continuing curiosity that I began to think HearHere could satisfy anyone that had the same feelings I do without having to leave the car.”

Costner says the company made a commitment to enriching a traveler’s experience with stories focused on first people and stories that have never been heard or may be forgotten.

“We agreed as a group that no matter the region, the history of first people and the stories of first contact would always be the most important,” said Costner. “I not only saw it as our responsibility, but as our obligation to do this first and to understand and pass on faithfully the stories of the people who flourished here for thousands of years before we ever came.”

Costner says his love affair with the family road trip and exploring America stretches back into his own childhood.

“I didn’t grow up with the trappings that maybe people associate with me,” said Costner. “Our vacations were rubber tire, they were Coleman stove and canvas tents and they were the High Sierras.”

HereHere launched in August 2020 and hosts a library of more than 6,000 stories for road trips through the Southern, Eastern and Western United States. Currently, you can listen to HearHere while traveling through 29 states, including Washington, Idaho, Oregon and California, with more to come before summer 2021.

Kevin Costner attends the premiere of Disney's "McFarland, USA."

Kevin Costner’s Travel App Allows You to ‘Listen to the Landscape’

Have you ever been on a road trip across the U.S. and wanted to stop at some of the landmarks along the way? Learning the history of this great country is fun and interesting, however, it can be time-consuming to take detours during a long trip . In that case, the HearHere app, co-founded by actor Kevin Costner, can fill you in on the history of the land around you while you drive through it.

The HearHere app can open up a new world through oral history

A 35mm film photo shows a gray automobile driving on a road.

The HearHere app allows you to listen to the history of certain landmarks as you drive by them. There’s no need to stop and read the land markers in order to learn some history about that specific location. All you need to do is open up the HearHere app and tap on that specific location on the map.

The app then plays a recording that tells you a story about the history of the landscape around you. According to CNBC , the HearHere app has “more than 9,000 stories to date, with topics ranging from Abraham Lincoln to Janis Joplin, and from Kentucky’s National Corvette Museum to Nashville’s music scene.”

How does Kevin Costner play into this app?

Kevin Costner attends the premiere of Disney's "McFarland, USA."

As stated before, Kevin Costner is a co-founder of the app along with entrepreneur Woody Sears. Costner joined the company when the app was in its preliminary stages and even agreed to narrate some of the stories. The app was launched in 2020, right when the pandemic hit and Americans were forced to stay indoors.

The good thing was that despite those “stay at home” orders, many Americans took the open road, which was a good thing for the creators of HearHere.

“The idea of travel changed for a lot of people,” Sears told CNBC. “We happened to open our doors at the same time as the shift.”

There are plenty of stories to be told about our nation’s history

In addition to some of the major landmarks across the U.S ., there are plenty of stories about this nation’s history on the HearHere app – including some of the harder stories to tell.

“Our story is not always a great one. There was so much violence in America. We’re watching violence play out now across the globe…to think that didn’t occur here… it did,” Costner told CNBC.

Some of those stories include those about America’s Founding Fathers, the Civil War, and slavery. “We don’t have to be ashamed about it,” Costner said. “We can be a little embarrassed, but it’s more embarrassing to not know.”

The HearHere app is easy to use

The HearHere app has been downloaded more than 400,000 times and you can download it too for free. Setting up the app is easy and you can listen to any stories on the map and you listen to them as fast or slow as you want. When initially signing up on the app, you get five free stories.

But if you would like to subscribe, then it costs $35 per year or $69.99 for three years. That’s a pretty good investment if you’re planning to take a few road trips this year. After all, learning about our nation’s history could be a lot more fun and informational than listening to the same songs over and over.

Say hearhere to a smarter road trip.

HearHere is an app that uses geolocation to share engaging stories about the regions you pass through on your road trips.

Kevin Costner Shares His Love for Local Lore Through a Travel App

Summer is road trip season and despite the daunting rise in gas prices, A survey by The Vacationer tells us that 208-million Americans plan to travel this summer, and 80 percent of those Americans will travel by car. Though gas prices have hit historical highs, the family road trip is still on this summer’s itinerary for many families as they regain some of the freedoms from fear and restrictions that kept them home since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.

Road trip vacations are a classic way to enjoy summer vacation for couples and families, but before you pack your luggage , load up on snacks, and set your new radar detector , first grab your best camera phone and download the smartphone app that adds a whole new layer of learning and fun to the all-American road trip.

If you’ve ever driven through a beautiful or interesting area on a road trip and wondered about the region’s history and relevant information, now you can learn about any area you’re passing through thanks to a remarkable app called HearHere that’s your best companion on the road.

Kevin Costner Can Ride Shot Gun on Your Next Road Trip

According to Kevin Costner, a road trip is the second-best way to see America — second only to seeing it from horseback. That’s why the popular Yellowstone actor teamed with the new audio app, HearHere, to produce and narrate content for America’s new favorite road trip app. HearHere offers travelers a new dimension to the typical family road trip by informing the driver and passengers of interesting facts about local history, culture, and landmarks as they travel.

With narrators including Kevin Costner himself, as well as other familiar voices such as John Lithgow, the app uses geolocation technology to chime in with fascinating stories of regional history, local legends, interesting landmarks, geological information, and engaging true stories of famous locals, all in 3 to 5-minute narrations. Texas author, radio personality, and Fullbright Scholar, W.F. Strong, narrates the colorful history and local information through many parts of Texas.

If travelers leave the app open, the narrators chime in as you pass through towns, cities, highways, and byways. If you’re traveling with the app closed, it sends an alert to your phone, giving you the option to listen or ignore the alert.

Choose From Eight Areas of Interest

Compelled by his love for road trips and his long habit of pulling over to read local plaques and learn about local areas of interest, Kevin Costner teamed with Bill Werlin, formerly an executive of Patagonia and North Face, as well as iOS entrepreneur, Woody Sears, to develop the travel companion app. Both developers found Costner’s knowledge of American history, local legendary characters, and sports trivia impressive. The app offers eight categories so listeners can choose their own areas of interest from subjects like music, natural wonders, and places of interest.

Not only does HearHere offer interesting information and local lore, but the format of short bursts of narration taking only 5 minutes or less means it doesn’t overly interfere with family conversation, road games, or audiobooks during travel. The developers designed the app to offer stories that are engaging enough to lure kids away from their tablets and teens from their Nintendo Switch games so the entire family can enjoy learning about places they’d otherwise travel through unaware. By adding a good cell phone car mount to your dash, you can enjoy listening to the app or your favorite audible book with hands-free convenience.

The app offers close to 10,000 stories covering each state in the continental US with plans to add Alaska and Hawaii to the app before 2023.

Kevin Costner

Founder Story: Kevin Costner

HearHere does many things, but our goal is very simple. To draw you in and offer up the history of the region unknown or forgotten.

I have a habit of investing in ideas that catch me. The idea has to make sense, but the team behind it is just as important. I learned about HearHere and met Woody Sears through an introduction by my wife who pitched me on the concept. When we took a deeper look at the idea, it was really playing into just what I do.

I love stories. I am the guy that stops at the historical markers along the highway - usually bringing moans from everyone in the car. But it was this continuing curiosity that I began to think HearHere could satisfy without anyone having to leave the car. Why couldn’t we replicate every marker along the highway - even expanding from the usual paragraph in bronze that always left me wanting more.

I am in love with history. I am in love with Country. I am in love with all the edges, all the disappointments, all the progress - all worth knowing. The truth will always be more interesting than the lie - and HearHere gives us the opportunity to reveal it.

The most important thing to me, and why I chose to be a part of this idea, is that we agreed as a group that no matter the region, we would always start with the history of the first people and the stories of first contact. It’s not only our responsibility, it’s our obligation to understand and to pass on faithfully the stories of the people who flourished here for thousands of years.

Legacy is important to me - and the idea that HearHere could preserve our collective experiences in an unflinching way was - for me - the greatest opportunity of all.

We’re launching HearHere with stories for California, Oregon, and Washington. Soon, we’ll canvas the US with more than 10,000 stories for you to enjoy.

We hope you’ll consider spending time with our stories during your next journey.

Great idea as I am one of those guys that will stop and read the markers….if they are still attached. So many have been stolen and I assume sold for their value of the brass they were cast in. Next to the stole/missing ones I also get upset by the taggers that for a reason that is beyond me have a need to deface like the one I saw a few weeks back at a turn off on the 80 on the way down from Tahoe. 'Horizon' star Kevin Costner doesn’t 'just fall out of love with things I like'

Oscar-winner kevin costner wrote, directed and stars in post-civil war drama, 'horizon: an american saga'.

Actor Kevin Costner is seen performing at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in Wyoming.

Kevin Costner is not afraid to admit he's obsessed with the film-making process, and of course, the American southwest.

His return to the silver screen next week will showcase his deep admiration for the Western genre. After all, "Horizon: An American Saga" is a project he's been working on for nearly 30 years.

"I don't know if passion's the right word," Costner told Entertainment Weekly . "I just don't fall out of love with things I like. I am always looking for the next great movie."

‘HORIZON’ DIRECTOR KEVIN COSTNER GRATEFUL ‘GOD ALLOWED’ HIM TO MAKE EPIC MOVIE DESPITE MASSIVE PERSONAL RISKS

Costner released the first trailer for the four-part, post-Civil War drama in February, and showcased the Wild West frontier his name has become synonymous with for decades, dating back to his first directorial stint on "Dances with Wolves."

His enthusiasm for the film is central to Costner's interest in the rich history of the American West.

"This is not a last stab at keeping this genre alive," he said. "This genre will live forever if people take it seriously."

KEVIN COSTNER IS EAGER FOR ‘HORIZON’ DEBUT: ‘THIS TIME HAS COME’

He added, "I don't want to be the person who's setting the record straight or 'Oh, here comes the history lesson.' That's not me. But women are dominant in my film. I want to highlight what their contributions were. Without women, the West dies. It never happens. This country doesn't happen. They have a place in these stories."

Darker themes surrounding Manifest Destiny are present throughout his film, but Costner insisted there's still a responsibility in his storytelling. In addition to starring in the feature film, Costner also directed "Horizon," based on a script he co-wrote with John Baird.

"You can't tell the story unless you bump into that. You can't talk about anything without understanding who was here before us," he said. "Our national appetite ran over culture after culture, with a high level of genocide. The people that were here for thousands of years were suddenly an inconvenience in their own land, and we should never forget that.

"The conflict was unfair. It was one-sided. If it was a sporting event, somebody would've thrown the f---ing flag and said, 'This is unacceptable,' but we did it, and we did it across the whole country. I never am going to forget what our participation has been in settling America, and I'm not so embarrassed about it that I won't talk about it."

On May 19, Costner will screen "Horizon" at the Cannes Film Festival, his first time back on the Croisette in 20 years.

"I'd like to thank the Festival de Cannes for including my film Horizon: An American Saga in this year's selection," he wrote online. "It’s been 20 years since I’ve had the pleasure of being on the Croisette. I’ve been waiting for the right time to return and I’m proud to say that this time has come."

He added, "#HorizonAmericanSaga is a story that began 35 years ago, and I can't think of a better place than Cannes to reveal to the world the result of such a wonderful adventure. The French have always supported films and believed deeply in filmmaking. Just as I believe deeply in my film."

The film came with a hefty price tag, though, and set Costner back more than $20 million in out-of-pocket expenses, which came to light in court documents after his ex-wife, Christine Baumgartner, filed for divorce in May after 18 years of marriage.

The first part of the Western saga debuts in theaters on Friday, June 28, while the second part of the drama will be released 49 days later, on Friday, Aug. 16.

While it seems like a major risk for Costner to fund "Horizon" himself, this isn't the first time he's done so.

Costner put up his own money to fund the 1990 movie "Dances with Wolves," "The Postman" in 1997 and "Black or White" in 2014.

Out of the three projects, "Dances with Wolves" was the most critically acclaimed, earning Costner two Academy Awards for best director and best picture and a nomination for best actor in a leading role.

Jewel shuts down questions about Kevin Costner romance: 'I'm so happy, irrelevant of a man'

travel app kevin costner

Jewel is doubling down on not needing a man to define her.

The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, 49, opened up about her romantic life and her experiences with "men in positions of power" over the decades as a musician in an interview with People magazine ahead of the opening of her immersive art exhibit, " The Portal: An Art Experience by Jewel ," in Arkansas.

Reflecting on her relationship with Sean Penn in the mid-'90s, the songstress revealed that she'd refrained at the time from using their romance to promote her music following the release of her debut album, " Pieces of You ."

"Even when I was dating Sean really early on, nobody knew I was dating him. I wouldn't do a red carpet with him. I was just very prideful," she told People. "I wasn't famous and my album was flopping — like, failing spectacularly. I remember going to the Venice Film Festival with him, and I could have done the red carpet and received a lot of media attention."

She continued, "People would've said, 'Who is this girl?' and I could have plugged my album. But I'd rather be unknown the rest of my life than have that be the way the world was introduced to me. I don't need fame that badly. I need to be fulfilled. I need to be happy. I need to be a songwriter. I wasn't thirsty in that way."

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Jewel reflected on the tough times she'd gone through in her 20s, including how she was fired after refusing her boss' sexual advances and when she had her car stolen, leaving her homeless. She's previously been open about experiencing abuse from her father during her childhood, as well as harassment as a young performer.

"It was a violent era, but the Hells Angels actually were very protective over me. But there's still violence," she recalled. "It was men in positions of power from TV networks to record labels, and women faced it every day."

Jewel reveals 'divorce wasn't easy' and responds to Kevin Costner romance speculation

In 2008, Jewely married rodeo star Ty Murray, and the two share a son, Kase. The couple divorced in 2014, leading the Alaskan singer to prioritize parenting over her career.

"The divorce wasn't easy. Choosing not to work for seven years wasn't easy. Choosing to build something else other than music wasn't easy," she told People. "Divorces… you have so much grief, and it's hard. Not wanting to let go of that dream kept me in a marriage much longer than I probably should have."

Then in 2022, she released her first new album in seven years, "Freewheelin' Woman."

25 years of 'Pieces of You': Jewel on touring with Bob Dylan, Sean Penn romance

“It’s hard to write pop songs that aren’t romantic,” Jewel told USA TODAY that year. “I was proud of ‘Intuition’ for that – it delivered a deeper concept wrapped in a pop song. Dancing and singing are my keys to life.”

Fast forward to 2024, and several media outlets have speculated about a budding romance between Jewel and " Yellowstone " actor Kevin Costner, whose divorce from his wife of almost two decades, Christine Baumgartner, was recently finalized .

But that's not something the singer is interested in discussing.

"I found love, and I'm not talking about Kevin's. I'm so happy, irrelevant of a man. It has nothing to do with being in a relationship or not being in one," she told People. "I'm more inspired now than I've ever been in my life. The most since I was like 19 or 20 years old.

"I'm just happy."

Jewel May Have Just Hinted That She & Kevin Costner Have Made This Huge Step in Their Romance

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

In case you missed it, the beloved artistic soul that is Jewel just released an art exhibit , called The Portal: An Art Experience by Jewel , at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Ark. And in a recent interview with People, she talked all about self-love, and how her greatest love is learning to love and find herself. But amid this conversation, she may have hinted at how serious she and Kevin Costner are.

In the interview with People , she did shut down the notion that this exhibit was about Costner, but did say something that made fans do a double take.

Jewel Just Released an Art Exhibit That Gives Fans a Glimpse Into Her Greatest Love

“I found love, and I’m not talking about Kevin’s. I’m so happy, irrelevant of a man. It has nothing to do with being in a relationship or not being in one,” she said, to which People said she declined to “answer questions about the actor.”

Okay, but did you catch that? She said, “talking about Kevin’s ,” potentially insinuating that she and Costner may have already dropped the “L” word to one another. It has been six months since they were seen together, so saying “I love you” isn’t totally out of the realm of possibility for this romance.

For those who don’t know, the two confirmed their romance when photos of them cuddling together were leaked to TMZ in early Dec 2023, after musings of them flirting at an island getaway surfaced in Nov 2023.

Since then, they’ve kept their romance on the down low, but insiders have discussed that their friends are over the moon about the prospect of a serious relationship between the two. It seems they may have already said “I love you,” but since they like to keep this romance private, we probably won’t hear any details from the two for quite some time.

Yellowstone season 5: Kevin Costner finally explains why he quit the show

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Kevin Costner has shed light on why he dramatically quit Yellowstone .

In May, it was revealed that the hit Paramount series, about a Montana landowner named John Dutton (Costner) and his warring family, will be coming to an end with its fifth and final season this November.

The surprise development came following reports that Costner had locked horns with creator Taylor Sheridan over scheduling conflicts.

While Sheridan said he was “disappointed” with the actor’s decision, Costner has remained silent on the subject – until now.

According to multiple outlets, Costner addressed the Yellowstone debacle while giving testimony at his divorce case on Friday (1 September).

The Dances with Wolves actor-director is reported to have said the situation was “complicated”, and that he “did negotiate” to return for three more seasons.

However, according to reporters present at the trial, Costner said: “There were issues about creative. I tried to break the logjam. They walked away.” He is believed to have said he will “probably go to court” over the matter.

Costner’s scheduling conflicts are believed to have been caused by a passion project he wants to make named Horizon: An American West , which has been 35 years in the making.

Sheridan previously said: “My last conversation with Kevin was that he had this passion project he wanted to direct. He and the network were arguing about when he could be done with Yellowstone . I said, ‘We can certainly work a schedule toward [his preferred exit date],’ which we did.”

Sources claimed to Deadline in February that Costner only wanted to spend a single week shooting his scenes for the second batch of episodes in season five, but his attorney denied the report, saying : “The idea that Kevin was only willing to work one week on the second half of season five of Yellowstone is an absolute lie.”

The actor still has half of season five left to shoot, which will serve as a “truncated” end to the Dutton family saga.

Yellowstone airs in the UK on Paramount+. The Independent has contacted Paramount for comment.
