SFX Youth Sports

Serving brooklyn youth for over 100 years, sfx huskies travel baseball.

The Program

All SFX Youth Sports programs are committed to the fundamental principles of teamwork, fair play and good sportsmanship. The Huskies Travel Baseball program’s mission is to uphold these principles while playing competitive baseball: the SFX Huskies mission is to win games through dedication, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.

The SFX Huskies Travel Baseball program was started in 2003 to offer players a nurturing, competitive outlet for their baseball passion. The SFX Huskies play competitive baseball throughout Brooklyn, Long Island, New Jersey, and throughout the mid-Atlantic region or beyond, depending on the team.

The Commitment

Because of the competitive nature of the travel baseball program, not all players who try out for the team will be placed on the roster. Players who are accepted onto the team should recognize that a significant commitment is required by both players and parents. Teams may practice several times each week, with games on weeknights and weekends.

The success of the SFX Huskies Travel Baseball program relies heavily on the commitment from its coaches, who tend to remain with a team over multiple seasons to ensure continuity from one year to the next. The coaches are dedicated to the program, and expect equal dedication from SFX Huskies parents to fully participate in this highly demanding program. Parents will be asked to review and sign a Parent Contract to acknowledge the commitment required when joining the SFX Huskies family.

Tryouts and Registration

Before registering for an SFX Huskies team, each player is evaluated to determine the appropriate level of skills or potential. Each year new players are encouraged to try out for the team, and no preference is given to returning players over new players: the goal is to build a competitive team that will win games through dedication, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.

There are SFX Huskies teams for players aged 8 through 18.

Registration begins in the winter for a season that begins in the spring and continues through the summer.

Please email us with questions at [email protected]

Our Travel Baseball program is for players ages 8 to 14 who are looking to become better baseball players by learning skills for future development while having fun in the process.

Our coaching philosophy is to provide positive, long-term development and education to our players in a safe, supportive, and competitive environment. Our coaches provide honest feedback while remaining encouraging at the same time to teach mental and physical maturity in sports.

We do not take a 'win at all costs' approach because we believe that this is a negative aspect within youth sports that places an unnecessary emphasis on results that do not matter long term and that also takes away from the youth players' opportunity to develop as both an athlete and as a person.

Players will play a doubleheader on Sundays against competitive travel teams in the local area.  Players must attend weekly indoor and outdoor team practice during the season.

A black and white photo of the ocean.

As the father of 3 boys we have experience with a number of NYC sports organizations. The Bluebirds standout because they provide top tier coaching and training and also foster a uniquely strong bond among the players within each team and across all age groups. Joining the Bluebirds feels like joining a family and my son is very loyal and committed to the organization.

Andrew S.

I was very impressed by the practice. The coaches were able to relate to the kids very well. I liked that they focused from the very beginning on the fundamentals for each skill. My son thought it was a great practice and remarked that the coaches were "the best" he has had. I agree. He has played in several leagues over the past three years and last week was by far the best instruction that I have seen. We are very excited for the season to start.

Justin M.

Coach was always rooting for my son and always had his back. In good and in tough times, he cares about these boys and wants the best for them. I appreciate this immensely.

Aline G.

This weeks tournament in St. Louis was not only fun but a very formative and positive experience for my son. He came home beaming! Super happy! Mentioned the great team dinner at the end. A huge thank you for all the hard work! Unforgettable experience.

Juan T.

The Bluebirds coaching staff are not only seasoned players and coaches, highly effective in teaching the technical aspects of the game, but they adapt to their player's nuances, strengths and weaknesses in order to maximize each child's potential. The Bluebirds staff provide a strong learning experience in hard work, having fun and knowing how to win and lose.

Robin W.

We just want to tell you that we thought the coaches did an amazing job with the team this fall. This team is such a nice group of kids but I think we all agree that every single kid has a VERY strong personality! And the two of them really showed up for the kids and built solid relationships with them as individuals and as a team. The team really improved at so many different aspects of the game, and we give the coaches enormous credit for their hard work. As we've said before, our son is having an amazing experience with the Bluebirds overall and we are just so thrilled and happy to be part of this organization.

Jennifer A.

The coaches were great and drills were coordinated. The focus on fundamentals of throwing and fielding was excellent. Right number of kids for a team and the kids seem happy. Best practice I have seen in a league to date.

Mission statement.

YouthSportsNYC - Our baseball league is geared towards inner city youth with a focus on diversity and inclusion. Our goal is to bring competitive baseball, along with additional athletic activity opportunities throughout the year, to youth in the metro area at an affordable price.  The percentage of youth who participate in competitive baseball is significantly lower than the suburbs.  Sports in suburban areas have strong organized leagues and financial support. Our mission is to offer the same opportunity for youth in the inner city to play competitive baseball amongst great players all over the country. Our players often come from underprivileged households that sometimes cannot afford the expenses associated with quality travel baseball. Sports have been proven to build social skills, keep youth away from drugs, violence, and other negative activities, increase concentration in school, and build confidence. Clinical studies also show that sports have been proven to help youth establish lifelong, healthy, physical activity patterns. Our league aims to create a positive and inspirational environment for our players both on and off the field.  We strive to level the playing field and give New York City youth access to the same opportunities as other kids in the country at an affordable price. To make our mission a reality, we will depend on sponsorships to provide inexpensive league membership to our teams/players. Our goal is to never turn a player down due to financial or economic hardships.

Support the league and its mission.

36 Hours in Brooklyn

travel baseball brooklyn ny

By Ingrid K. Williams Photographs by Karsten Moran

Ingrid K. Williams is a regular contributor to the Travel section who lives in Brooklyn.

Brooklyn first established itself as a summertime destination for weary city-dwellers over 150 years ago with beachside resorts and racetracks. These days the borough overflows with seasonal draws: block parties , street fairs, W.N.B.A. Liberty games , barbecues in the park and lazy afternoons on a stoop with beers and some tunes. Still locals gripe about the humidity, the bugs, the city odors, on top of the ongoing gentrification that has rendered entire neighborhoods unrecognizable — and unaffordable — to longtime residents. This itinerary skips the most touristy and overdeveloped areas, including Williamsburg and Dumbo, and requires no restaurant reservations or advance planning. Instead, you’ll find concerts in Prospect Park, a show-stopping exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum and fantastic food far and wide, from tacos in Bushwick and dumplings in Sunset Park to nostalgic soft serves in southern Brooklyn.

Recommendations

  • The Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park hosts “ Celebrate Brooklyn! ,” an annual series of free outdoor concerts presented by BRIC, a local nonprofit arts organization.
  • Radio Bakery , which opened last year in Greenpoint, sells Earl Grey morning buns and breakfast sandwiches made with everything-spice focaccia, smoked salmon and cream cheese.
  • The Brooklyn Museum is currently exhibiting “Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys,” with contemporary works from across the Black diaspora.
  • L&B Spumoni Gardens , a southern Brooklyn institution open since 1939, serves thick Sicilian-style pizza squares and heaping scoops of spumoni (a gelato-like specialty).
  • Brooklyn Bridge Park , with verdant lawns, recreational areas and views of the Manhattan skyline, is a natural entryway to the borough.
  • WNYC Transmitter Park , which was once home to radio transmission towers, overlooks the East River from the waterfront in Greenpoint.
  • The Pratt Sculpture Park , a secluded oasis of art and nature, is tucked away on the Pratt Institute’s leafy campus in Clinton Hill.
  • At the Brooklyn Botanic Garden , the magnolia trees and fragrant rose garden bloom in summer.
  • The Riegelmann Boardwalk , a nearly three-mile-long oceanfront promenade in Coney Island, attracts a colorful cast of characters.
  • The Brooklyn Cyclones , a minor league baseball team affiliated with the Mets, play in Maimonides Park, a small stadium beside the Coney Island boardwalk.
  • At Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pie , one specialty is the swingle, a frozen chocolate-covered mini key lime pie on a stick.
  • UnTable , a restaurant serving unconventional twists on Isan (northeast Thailand) cuisine, opened last year on a quiet brownstone block in Carroll Gardens.
  • Malai , an ice cream shop in Carroll Gardens, serves South Asian-inspired flavors like masala chai, lychee and mango-and-cream.
  • Rhythm Zero is a new coffee shop worthy of an interior design magazine spread, steps from the waterfront in Greenpoint.
  • A&A Bake Doubles and Roti , a long-standing Trinidadian counter-service shop in Bed-Stuy, serves delicious doubles (curried-chickpea-filled fried flatbreads loaded with tamarind and pepper sauces).
  • Fan-Fan Doughnuts , a small bakery in Bed-Stuy, offers many flavors, like the churros-and-chocolate doughnut, inspired by the owner Fany Gerson’s Mexican roots.
  • Taqueria Al Pastor is a casual favorite in Bushwick for carne asada and al pastor tacos and Mexican horchata.
  • Nenes Deli Taqueria , southwest of Bushwick’s Maria Hernandez Park, serves cheesy, braised-beef birria tacos.
  • R.Slice is a newly opened slice shop beside Roberta’s , the pizzeria that put Bushwick on the culinary map back in 2008.
  • Yafa , a serene Yemeni cafe in Sunset Park, serves specialty drinks like a locally roasted, single-origin Yemeni pour-over coffee.
  • La Flor de Izucar is a Mexican bakery and cafe in Sunset Park with fluffy vanilla conchas.
  • Kai Feng Fu Dumpling House is a no-frills, cash-only spot in Sunset Park for pan-fried pork-and-chive dumplings and sesame pancakes.
  • Sunny’s Bar is a beloved Red Hook dive that’s been around since the 1890s when dockworkers were regulars.
  • LunÀtico , a musician-owned bar with a tiny stage in Bedford-Stuyvesant, hosts nightly performances, often with top local musicians.
  • Public Records , a multi-room magnet for audiophiles in Gowanus, recently opened Upstairs, a loft-like second-floor listening lounge and bar.
  • Danger Danger , a rollicking rock bar that opened last year in Bushwick, has Italo-disco tunes, zebra-print carpeting and parrot-adorned chandeliers.
  • Ornithology is a cozy Bushwick jazz club with late-night jam sessions and great cocktails.
  • Elsewhere is a fun, inclusive club in a converted warehouse with multiple rooms and a rooftop terrace in an industrial area along the border of Bushwick and East Williamsburg.
  • The Fort Greene Park Greenmarket is a neighborhood farmers’ market with an adjacent Artisans Bazaar of stalls from small local businesses.
  • The Word is Change , a new-and-second-hand bookstore with a social-justice focus, is one of many independent shops in Bed-Stuy.
  • Byas & Leon is an inviting boutique with sustainable apparel, hand-made jewelry and vintage pieces.
  • BLK MKT Vintage stocks antiques, clothing and collectible miscellany related to Black culture.
  • Black Star Vinyl is the spot in Bed-Stuy to flip through records and magazines.
  • 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge , near the northern edge of Brooklyn Heights, is a luxurious option with outstanding views from the rooftop pool and bar as well as from many of the 195 neutral-hued guest rooms. Rooms start at $680.
  • The Ace Hotel Brooklyn opened in 2021 steps from the downtown Hoyt-Schermerhorn subway station, and has a clubby lobby lounge and 287 industrial-chic rooms with vintage furnishings and raw-concrete ceilings. Rooms start at $279.
  • The Penny Williamsburg , conveniently near two subway lines, is a pet-friendly property that opened in 2022, with 118 apartment-style rooms (each has a kitchenette) and a scenic rooftop bar. Rooms from $225.
  • There are few legal short-term rentals in Brooklyn after the city began enforcing strict new rules in 2023 in an effort to alleviate the housing shortage.
  • Brooklyn is eminently walkable and traveling between neighborhoods is easy via subways and buses ($2.90), as well as ferries ($4). Citi Bike has docks with both regular bikes and e-bikes stationed throughout the borough ($4.79 for 30 minutes; $19 for a day pass). Ride-hailing options include Uber and Lyft.

A small cove in a large city has green trees and a brick warehouse lining its shores while behind it a large bridge spans over a river.

Brooklyn Bridge Park

Every year, millions visit Brooklyn Bridge Park , where formerly industrial piers are now home to verdant lawns and recreational areas, yet few venture farther down the waterfront. Hop on a Citi Bike and keep pedaling until you reach Red Hook, a neighborhood about two miles south. The city recently announced plans to redevelop a dilapidated marine terminal on more than 100 acres of Red Hook’s waterfront. But for now, this out-of-the-way neighborhood still has the feel of a bygone era with low-slung rowhouses, aging industrial buildings and the odd cobblestone street. Stop for a beer at Sunny’s Bar , a beloved dive around since the 1890s when dockworkers were regulars. Or pop over to Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pie for a swingle, a frozen chocolate-covered mini key lime pie on a stick ($7), best enjoyed on the adjacent Valentino Pier with views of the Statue of Liberty.

travel baseball brooklyn ny

For dinner, bike to neighboring Carroll Gardens, one of Brooklyn’s many historically Italian neighborhoods, for sweat-inducing Thai food at UnTable , a superb restaurant that opened on a quiet brownstone block last year. At this walk-in-only spot, expect unconventional twists on Isan (northeast Thailand) cuisine from the chef Aun Kampimarn. Cheerful servers, after checking your spice tolerance, will guide you through the menu that recently included creamy Chiang Mai-style khao-soi curry ($25), crab croquettes with a hot-and-sour tom-yum purée ($19), and the scorching “WHAT THE HELL!! Fried Rice” that’s labeled on the menu, accurately, with 12 chile peppers ($26). After dinner, cool off at Malai , a nearby ice cream shop with South Asian-inspired flavors like masala chai, lychee and my favorite: mango-and-cream (from $6).

The borough has many outstanding performing arts venues, including the acclaimed Brooklyn Academy of Music in Fort Greene, the regal Kings Theatre in Flatbush and the beautifully restored Brooklyn Paramount in Downtown Brooklyn that reopened in March. But on a balmy summer evening, no one wants to be cooped indoors when there’s a show in Prospect Park . On the western edge of this lush 585-acre park, the Lena Horne Bandshell hosts “ Celebrate Brooklyn! ,” an annual outdoor concert series presented by BRIC, a local nonprofit arts organization. This year’s lineup includes the singer-songwriter and rapper Meshell Ndegeocello, the ska-punk band Fishbone and the Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti. Performances are free and seats fill up fast, but there’s always space to unfurl a blanket on the surrounding grass.

A male musician wearing a blue shirt plays a guitar in a small dark nightclub with a xylophonist behind him and a few small tables full of people in front of him.

When mosquitoes descend after dark, head indoors for an encore performance at LunÀtico , an intimate, musician-owned bar with a tiny stage in Bedford-Stuyvesant (the neighborhood everyone calls Bed-Stuy), northeast of the park. Nightly shows often feature top local musicians — the reggae saxophonist Anant Pradhan and the trumpeter Jon Lampley are regulars — playing to a rapt crowd. Or roll into Gowanus, a former industrial zone along a notoriously polluted canal where, since a recent rezoning , shiny apartment towers are now sprouting at breakneck speed. On one still-undeveloped block, Public Records is a multi-room magnet for audiophiles that recently opened Upstairs, a loft-like second-floor listening lounge with sleek white banquettes and a high-tech sound system playing rare vinyl and tapes into the early morning.

A woman pushing a bike walks with a man holding a backpack as they walk up the sidewalk on a leafy block of brownstones.

Picturesque brownstone blocks abound in Brooklyn, but the borough also overflows with museums, restaurants and outdoor activities for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.

A large morning-bun pastry resting on top of pastry paper.

Radio Bakery

Arrive early to avoid the line that usually stretches down the block outside Radio Bakery in Greenpoint, Brooklyn’s northernmost neighborhood. This cult-favorite bakery, which opened last year, excels in both sweet and savory — Earl Grey-flavored morning buns ($5.50), croissants filled with roasted mushrooms ($7) — but best are the sandwiches made with everything-spice focaccia, smoked salmon, cream cheese, pickled onions and dill ($14.50). Take your order to go and pick up a cappuccino ($4.75) from Rhythm Zero , a new gallery-like coffee shop worthy of an interior design magazine spread. Then claim a bench in the adjacent WNYC Transmitter Park for breakfast with views across the East River and, even closer, of the creeping construction of modern high-rises.

Many Brooklynites start their Saturdays with a trip to a neighborhood farmers’ market. The Fort Greene Park Greenmarket may be smaller than the one at Grand Army Plaza , at the top of Prospect Park, but has more of a community feel, with regulars chatting up vendors at the concurrent Artisans Bazaar and impromptu stoop sales occasionally popping up in front of adjacent brownstones. Browse stalls where you might find felted wall hangings from Suri & Caya , hand-embroidered sweatshirts from Create the Culture , statement-making sunglasses from Eeny Eyewear and cute pet accessories from Gone to the Dogs . Then grab a pint of raspberries from Wilklow Orchards , a Hudson Valley farm, and wander east into neighboring Clinton Hill to the Pratt Sculpture Park (free), a secluded oasis of art and nature on the Pratt Institute’s leafy campus.

A woman wearing a white crop top and a long dress stands in a bookstore looking at titles stored on bookshelves.

The Word is Change

Adjacent to Clinton Hill, Bed-Stuy is filled with independent shops and worth-a-detour food spots. On Tompkins Avenue, pop into the Word is Change , a new-and-second-hand bookstore with a social-justice focus; then visit Byas & Leon , an inviting boutique with sustainable apparel, hand-made jewelry and vintage pieces. Refuel a few blocks away at A&A Bake Doubles and Roti , a long-standing Trinidadian counter-service shop with delicious doubles (curried-chickpea-filled fried flatbreads loaded with tamarind and pepper sauces; $2.50). Later browse Juneteenth posters, old Ebony magazines, VHS tapes and other collectible miscellany related to Black culture at BLK MKT Vintage , and flip through records and magazines at Black Star Vinyl . Make a final stop at Fan-Fan Doughnuts , where many flavors, like the churros-and-chocolate doughnut, are inspired by the owner Fany Gerson’s Mexican roots (from $3.50).

A marble statue of a male angel with an angry (or scared) expression carved into his face sits before a brightly colored tapestry hung on the wall behind, with a man in the tapestry wearing a yellow cape and riding a white horse.

Brooklyn Museum

The Brooklyn Museum , near Prospect Park, will begin celebrating its 200th anniversary later this year. But go now to catch the current exhibition, “Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys” (through July 7; tickets $25). This outstanding showcase of contemporary artworks from across the Black diaspora includes monumental portraits by Kehinde Wiley and Lorna Simpson, multidimensional paintings evoking hidden histories by Titus Kaphar, an entire gallery lined with colossal works by the Botswana-born painter Meleko Mokgosi, and a fascinating series of photographs from 1980s Brooklyn by Jamel Shabazz. If there’s time afterward, stroll next door to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden where the magnolia trees and fragrant rose garden bloom in summer (admission $22; last entry 5:30 p.m.).

Head to Bushwick for a food crawl through the traditionally Latino, rapidly gentrifying neighborhood. Start at Taqueria Al Pastor , a casual favorite for carne asada and al pastor tacos (from $4.50) and cinnamon-spiced Mexican horchata ($4). Then walk through Maria Hernandez Park , where locals play soccer, basketball and ecuavoley (an Ecuadorean variant of volleyball), to Nenes Deli Taqueria for cheesy, braised-beef birria tacos ($4.15). Finish by crossing Flushing Avenue to the newly opened R.Slice , a New York-style slice shop from Roberta’s — the pizzeria, now an international brand, that put Bushwick on the culinary map back in 2008. Order a couple of slices, at least one of which should be the Fire & Ice made with spicy ’nduja sausage and fresh stracciatella cheese on a crisp, foldable crust ($6).

Danger Danger

After dinner, join the crowd bouncing along to synth and Italo-disco tunes at Danger Danger , a rollicking rock bar that opened last year with zebra-print carpeting and parrot-adorned chandeliers. For a chiller vibe, duck inside Ornithology , a cozy jazz club nearby with late-night jam sessions and great cocktails ($10 cover). Or dance all night at Elsewhere , a fun, inclusive club in a converted warehouse with multiple rooms and a rooftop terrace (entry from around $30). The surrounding area, an industrial zone bordering East Williamsburg, is worth revisiting in the daytime for its grassroots arts scene, including the Bushwick Collective street art murals and the buzzy new International Objects gallery.

At an outdoor fruit market with a roof, a man wearing a white baseball hat looks at produce on a table while bunches of bananas hang from the ceiling.

Brooklyn’s Chinatown

Hop aboard the South Brooklyn ferry — the breeziest summer transit option — to Sunset Park, a multicultural neighborhood where the flavors change from block to block. Begin on Fourth Avenue at Yafa , a serene Yemeni cafe serving specialty drinks like a locally roasted, single-origin Yemeni pour-over coffee ($7). Then walk to La Flor de Izucar , a Mexican bakery and cafe on Fifth Avenue, for a fluffy vanilla concha ($1.50). Pause in the adjacent park , also named Sunset Park, to admire the sweeping views across Brooklyn, the lower Manhattan skyline, New Jersey and Staten Island. Then explore Brooklyn’s Chinatown, which spans Seventh and Eighth Avenues, ending at Kai Feng Fu Dumpling House , a no-frills, cash-only spot for sesame pancakes ($1.75) and pan-fried pork-and-chive dumplings doused with soy sauce, vinegar and chili oil ($2.50 for six).

A merry-go-round with the words "Wonder Wheel" emblazoned on the front is located behind a boardwalk with Nathan's Hot Dog umbrellas over small dining tables.

Coney Island’s Riegelmann Boardwalk

It’s a summertime rite of passage to join the colorful cast of characters sauntering along Coney Island’s Riegelmann Boardwalk , a nearly three-mile-long oceanfront promenade. Amusement options abound but skip the (expensive) rides in favor of a baseball game. The minor league Cyclones — Brooklyn’s only professional baseball team since the Dodgers’ heartbreaking departure for Los Angeles in 1958 — play in Maimonides Park, a small stadium beside the boardwalk where rollercoasters rumble beyond the center field fence (tickets from $20). Win or lose, after the game, join families gathered on the outdoor patio of L&B Spumoni Gardens (one subway stop away on the N), a Brooklyn institution open since 1939 with take-out windows serving delicious Sicilian-style pizza squares ($4), creamsicle soft serves ($6) and heaping scoops of spumoni (a gelato-like specialty; $5).

Rehabbing francisco alvarez plays part in historic no-hitter for brooklyn cyclones.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

The Brooklyn Cyclones made a bit of franchise history and rehabbing Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez was there for it all on Tuesday night.

Alvarez, who is rehabbing from a torn ligament in his thumb that he suffered in April, caught every inning of the Cyclones’ first-ever nine-inning no-hitter during their 3-0 home win over the Aberdeen Ironbirds.

Righties Dakota Hawkins, Joey Lancellotti, and Joshua Cornielly combined for nine innings of no-hit ball and struck out six batters during the memorable night.

Francisco Alvarez poses with Cyclones pitchers Joshua Cornielly, Dakota Hawkins and Joey Lancellotti.

Hawkins, who threw five innings on Tuesday recalled to The Post when Alvarez approached him about what was going on several innings in.

“The third inning rolls around and Alvarez comes up to me and says, ‘Hey, we’re throwing a no-hitter today.’ I go, ‘OK, sounds good,’” Hawkins said during a phone interview.

The 24-year-old Mets prospect, who was making his second start of the season for the Cyclones, praised Lancellotti and Cornielly and called the night “something special.”

Lancellotti entered the game in the sixth and Cornielly came in to pitch the final three innings.

“The ninth comes around and I’m like, ‘oh we’re three outs away from doing this. And then next thing you know we’re celebrating on the mound, and we just threw a no-hitter,” Hawkins said.

Alvarez went 1-for-3 at the plate in his first rehab start with the Mets High-A affiliate after combining to go 2-for-8 in three rehab games with Double-A Binghamton.

On Tuesday night the catcher singled to center field on a line drive in the bottom of the first and walked in the bottom of the third.

Dakota Hawkins pitches to Francisco Alvarez during the Cyclones' first-ever nine-inning no-hitter.

“I mean he’s such a great hitter,” Hawkins said. “I remember I was watching his first or second at-bat, he watched three balls down in the dirt. He’s just, great takes, great takes and then he puts a good swing on a ball that he just missed. I think he ended up walking or something like that I mean he’s really good.

Hawkins said Tuesday’s no-hitter ranked second among his baseball memories in his lifetime — the day the Mets signed him remained his top memory — and it didn’t hurt that he had a big league catcher helping to guide him through the night.

Not just because Alvarez was playing in Queens before he had been injured earlier this year, but he had been through the Mets system before getting to the Majors and played 84 games with the Cyclones in 2021 setting a franchise record with 22 home runs that season.

“Being able to have a guy who has been in my shoes catching in the minor leagues – catching for Brooklyn — and then being able to make it to the big leagues,” Hawkins said. “Being able to play the game at the highest level and he’s been really really good at it. It’s just a great feeling for me because he knows how to keep everything under control and keep me composed to play the game at the best of my ability.”

Alvarez could be back on his way to the big leagues as early as next week after the Mets return from London.

He had been batting .236 with one home run and eight RBIs before he got hurt in April.

Mets' Edwin Diaz enjoys a short and sweet rehab outing with the Single-A Cyclones

Seven minutes.

That is the exact amount of time between the sound of Timmy Trumpet’s “Narcos” filled Maimonides Park in Coney Island and when Edwin Diaz walked off the mound Thursday night, his work completed.

And his assessment of his performance?

“I feel great. I feel really good,” Diaz said, following his 14-pitch rehab assignment with the Single-A Cyclones Thursday night. “The ball was coming (out of my hand) really good.”

Diaz, who was placed on the injured list with a right shoulder impingement on May 29, entered the game at the top of the fifth inning and faced four batters and struck out two. His only blemish was a first-pitch, two-out triple to Tavian Josenberger.

Diaz threw fastballs and sliders, his hardest pitch clocked at 96.8 miles per hour.

“I was watching on TV,” manager Gilbert Gomez said. “He looked really good.”

Diaz told Newsday that he expects to make another rehab appearance with the Cyclones Sunday, and then come off the IL Wednesday or Thursday.

Following the 2022 season in which Diaz recorded 32 saves, 118 strikeouts and a 1.31 ERA, the Mets signed the closer to a five-year, $102 million contract.

However, he missed all of the 2023 season because of a torn patellar tendon, suffered celebrating Puerto Rico’s 5-2 win over the Dominican Republic in a World Baseball Classic quarterfinal game last March. Shortly thereafter, then-general manager Billy Eppler said the accepted timeline to return from the injury is eight months.

The Mets have erred on the side of caution with Diaz as organizational decision-makers decided not to have him pitch in the final weeks of last season and limited him to 3 2/3 innings over four games during spring training.

“Being out a year and (ramping up) to start the season . . . I wasn’t (as) strong as I (wanted),” said Diaz, who is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in 20 appearances with the Mets this season. He has five saves, 30 strikeouts and walked seven.

“Now I’m really strong.”

Diaz was charged with a blown save in his last appearance with the Mets, yielding a run on two hits in an inning in the 7-2, 10-inning loss to the Giants on May 25. His four blown saves are tied with six others for second-most in the majors. Minnesota’s Steven Okert and the Cubs’ Adbert Alzolay are tied for the most with five.

The 30-year-old righty is the fifth Met player to have a rehab stint in Brooklyn this season, joining fellow pitchers Drew Smith, Tylor Megill, Sean Reid-Foley, and catcher Francisco Alvarez.

Greenpoint has morphed into a mecca of new real estate offerings.

Once a beneath-the-radar section of Brooklyn, Greenpoint has morphed into a mecca of new real estate offerings and restaurants. Galleries and artist studios are housed in converted warehouses, and the revitalized East River waterfront has parks and new high-rises with sweeping views of midtown Manhattan.

The Huron is a two-tower condo with 171 units.

Along the East River, two new high-rise apartment blocks, including 21 India Street and The Huron , on Huron Street, tower over Greenpoint’s ferry terminal. This connects Greenpoint with East 34th Street in Midtown in eight minutes and to Wall Street’s Pier 11 in a little over half an hour. The Huron is a two-tower condo with 171-units designed by Morris Adjmi the architect who made Williamsburg, Williamsburg with the restoration of the Wythe Hotel. Adjmi’s entry to Greenpoint signals a wider shift that this unconnected neighborhood is officially connected.

Recent development statistics point to impressive real estate growth. New sponsor listings are up 124% this year compared to this time last year, and number of sales have increased by 129% overall. Also, volume is up 178%, the average price increased by 21% and the number of signed contracts rose 117% over the same period last year.

A large number of restaurants have opened since 2021.

Today s nyt connections hints and answers for thursday june 6, adam levine is returning to ‘the voice’—meet the season 27 coaches.

At least 60 restaurants, bars and coffee shops have opened in the neighborhood since 2021. Once defined by Polish food, Greenpoint now serves a myriad of international fare with a twist from Korean fried chicken to Japanese dashi. Several Manhattan-based businesses have chosen the area to open their first Brooklyn locations, including Upside Pizza, the ice cream shop Caffè Panna and the Chinese restaurant Málà Project.

From ‘Restaurant Row’ on Greenpoint Avenue to the promenade that is expanding, the area has come a long way from its history as an industrial shipping beacon and Polish enclave. Much of Greenpoint’s housing is located in the streets that join Franklin Street and Manhattan Avenue, including India, Java and Kent streets to the north of Greenpoint Avenue, and Milton and Noble streets to its south. Homes are a mix of traditional brownstones, newer townhouses, low-rise apartment blocks and converted commercial or warehouse spaces, with trees lining the streets or overlooking garden spaces.

Looking for something unique to do in Greenpoint? NYC Glamping has up-cycled rustic, industrial shipping containers info comfortable rooms with A/C, WiFi, a shower and bathrooms and each one comes complete with stunning views of the East River and skyline (including the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building). Plus, it’s right next to Greenpoint’s drive-in and walk-up outdoor movie venue the Skyline Drive-In and your stay comes with completely free admission.

Greenpoint is a vibrant, burgeoning community.

Sara Gates, Founder of Kingsland Editions, says, "The industrial pocket of Greenpoint near Green Street, where my business, Kingsland Editions , is located, has retained its authenticity. We do see new restaurant openings and retail offerings, but there are still many artist studios and factories. It’s a great balance. Neighborhoods inevitably change with new developments, retail offerings and residents moving in and out. It’s typical for New York, but it keeps things exciting, and we love printing art for our new neighbors. Greenpoint has also attracted many new incredible art galleries like the Faurschou New York on 148 Green Street, the kind of programming you would find in Chelsea. Faurschou has multiple European locations, so they are a vibrant newer addition."

Chad Urban, Chef/Owner of Leroy's in Greenpoint, says, “We were very fortunate to find our space for Leroy’s when we did in the height of the pandemic. We were familiar with the neighborhood and knew there was demand with all the new residents moving in. Upper Greenpoint has continued to attract talent in the food & beverage scene, and the foot traffic is at an all-time high. The neighborhood offers a great lifestyle with everything at your fingertips.”

Brooklyn has always had its own special appeal.

Kayla Lee, Associate Broker at SERHANT and Huron Sales Director, "Our team is seeing robust sales activity in Greenpoint, and many new buyers are coming from Manhattan and beyond to be a part of this lifestyle. The neighborhood thrives with exciting new restaurants, retail and art galleries. Greenpoint has multiple convenient transportation modes to Manhattan, making commuting easy (especially with the ferry). Buyers are attracted to the Huron for the flexible floorplans and the extensive amenities package, including our heated pool, lounge, roof decks as well as private outdoor spaces (which many of the units have). These real estate offerings are fairly new to Greenpoint, and we're excited to pave the way for the new Greenpoint."

New york mets prospects pitch combined no-hitter.

  • June 4, 2024

On Tuesday night, in front of their home crowd, the Brooklyn Cyclones pitched a combined no-hitter for the first time in franchise history. The Brooklyn Cyclones are the High Single-A affiliate for the New York Mets . The Cyclones defeated the Aberdeen IronBirds, the High Single-A affiliate for the Baltimore Orioles, 3-0. The two Single-A teams squared off at Brooklyn’s home field, Maimonides Park.

The Mets Prospects That Pitched A No-Hitter

Winning pitcher Dakota Hawkins made the start for Brooklyn. The former Washington State Cougar has made 13 appearances this season.  Hawkins maintains a 3.48 ERA and 1.07 WHIP this year with a 41:11 strikeout-to-walk ratio. The right-hander struck out two and walked one in five frames against Aberdeen.

Joey Lancellotti came in to work the sixth inning. The former Tarheel has struggled early this season with a 5+ ERA and a 2.00 WHIP.  Lancellotti was bailed out by a stellar, hit-saving catch in right field by Stanley Consuegra . Despite his early struggles, the 26-year-old right-hander struck out and walked one, earning a hold and keeping the no-no intact.

Heading into the seventh inning, Brooklyn called on 6’2 right-hander, Joshua Cornielly . In Cornielly’s second season with Brooklyn, he has settled in as one of the closers for the Cyclones. Cornielly struck out three, walked one, hit a batter en route to his sixth save of the season, and completed the no-hitter.

Brooklyn Offense

In the third inning, Brooklyn’s William Lugo and Consuegra each had one run batted in. Jefrey De Los Santos would add one more run on a solo home run for the Cyclones. Those three runs would be all Brooklyn needed to put away Aberdeen with the pitching display that was taking place.

The X-Factor

The Cyclones had the benefit of Major League talent behind the plate tonight.  Francisco Alvarez is currently rehabbing with Brooklyn and caught the entire no-hitter.

He’s baaaaaaaaaaack. 💪🧌 Francisco Alvarez returns to Brooklyn this evening to continue his MLB Rehab Assignment. ⏰ – 6:00 PM 🎟️ – https://t.co/WMT9VhsK69 #AmazinStartsHere I #LGM I #MiLB pic.twitter.com/6DOL2BJt6i — Brooklyn Cyclones (@BKCyclones) June 4, 2024

With the Mets turning in a season that fans would like to forget, this should be a ray of light. Francisco Alvarez is looking healthy, and fans should be excited that he was capable of catching nine full innings.  The Mets prospects turned in some solid pitching, clutch hitting, and a web gem. There is a lot to get excited about in Brooklyn.

Politics | NYC Mayor Adams’ aide Rana Abbasova, who’s cooperating with feds, flew to Turkey for free, record show

Rana Abbasova is the Director of Protocol in the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs. (NYC.Gov)

Her October 2022 trip involved traveling to Istanbul with Adams’ then-chief of staff Frank Carone and city International Affairs Commissioner Ed Mermelstein to attend a conference hosted by GYODER , a Turkish real estate trade group.

Abbasova, who’s now cooperating with federal investigators, was serving as the administration’s international affairs “protocol director” at the time. Her travel to Turkey with Carone and Mermelstein has not been previously reported.

The investigation into the Adams’ campaign’s ties to Turkey exploded into public view last November when the FBI raided the homes of Abbasova, Brianna Suggs, one of Adams’ top campaign fundraisers, and Cenk Öcal , a former Turkish Airlines executive.

FBI agents raid the Brooklyn home of Mayor Adams' campaign consultant, Brianna Suggs, according to a source and published reports. Suggs raised money for Adams during his 2021 campaign. (Obtained by Daily News)

Since those raids, the feds have seized Adams’ electronic devices, and investigators have honed in on free upgrades the mayor received from Turkish Airlines, a story first reported by The New York Times . Adams has not been accused of any wrongdoing as part of the probe.

According to a 2022 financial disclosure form Abbasova filed with the city’s Conflicts of Interest Board, GYODER “paid my travel and accommodation” on the October 2022 trip.

“As always, she did a great job managing the logistics,” Carone said Thursday, noting that Abbasova speaks Turkish.

The mayor did not travel with her, Carone or Mermelstein to Istanbul, but he did appear virtually and, as reported by Politico , extolled the upsides of investing in the Big Apple .

Carone spoke at the conference in person.

“The mayor has a great love of the country of Turkey, the Turkish people,” he said at the time. “In fact, he’s been here seven times and he has a deep connection to the culture, to the people, and he says it all the time.”

Like Abbasova, Mermelstein reported travel expenses valued between $1,000 and $4,999 for the trip. Carone didn’t report any travel expenses associated with the trip on COIB forms and told Politico that generally he pays his own way for foreign trips.

Rachel Maimin, Abbasova’s attorney, declined to comment.

Immediately after the raid of her New Jersey home, Abbasova allegedly told her colleagues to “delete” their text exchanges, according to a source close to the investigation who spoke to the Daily News at the time.

After learning of that, Adams’ personal attorney Boyd Johnson said an unspecified individual had “acted improperly” and that the “behavior was immediately and proactively reported to investigators.” The source who spoke to The News confirmed that Johnson was referring to Abbasova in those remarks.

Abbasova remains on unpaid leave from her city job.

Which airlines she, Mermelstein and Carone used to travel to Turkey remains a mystery.

Carone said on Thursday that while he primarily uses Delta Airlines, he didn’t recall if he did on the GYODER trip. He noted that he flew to Turkey by himself and said he was checking his records to determine which airline he took there.

Kayla Mamelak, a spokeswoman from the mayor’s office, refused to answer direct questions inquiring about which airline Mermelstein and Abbasova used or whether the two traveled together.

“This trip to an international conference was approved in accordance with the conflicts of interest law and it was properly reported on public documents,” she said. “The trip gave our team the opportunity to discuss affordable housing work, develop diplomatic relations, and improve the city’s global standing.”
