Putting a waterproof cover over the top of the mattress with reduce the breathability. better to between the cover and the mattress core. Also it is a plus if the waterproof protection is easy wipe clean

However, if we don't stock the size you require, we are able to craft the specific size you need through our innovative 'build your own mattress' service.

Each travel cot mattress features a folding mechanism, enabling you to easily fold it in half for storage and travel, making it compact and convenient for plane journeys. A zip is located at the back of the mattress, facilitating seamless folding. Your travel cot mattress will arrive folded inside its own fabric storage bag, ensuring it remains dust-free during storage. This folding feature does not compromise the comfort or safety of the mattress.

The accompanying storage bag is essential for keeping your mattress dust-free while not in use.

Regardless of the dimensions required for the travel cot mattress, we offer two premium mattress fillings to choose from. For safety reasons, we are restricted in the fillings we can use, ensuring they do not exceed a depth of 5/7cm, as stipulated by British Safety Standards.

There are many types of cot and cot bed mattresses on the market, and they come with many different styles and features. Broadly speaking, here are the five main types of cot mattresses and cot bed mattresses:

Coil spring cot mattress – open coil springs surrounded by foam and fillings. Tends to be sturdier than a typical foam mattress.

Pocket spring mattress – springs that are individually wrapped within a cloth sleeve/ Provides good support, but can be pricey.

Coir cot mattress – manufactured from coconut, latex and wool. Naturally firm and durable.

Hollow-frame (Purflo) cot mattress – advertised as fully breathable and fully washable. It’s basically a mesh cover stretched over an open frame. Expensive.

How do I choose a cot mattress?

There are many elements to consider when choosing the best cot mattress:

Safety – what’s the safest cot mattress?

The safest cot mattress is one that’s firm with no sagging and that follows the relevant safety laws. Your chosen mattress should fit the cot snugly with no gaps for stray fingers or tiny toes to get trapped.

Truthfully, the look of a baby cot mattress should always be secondary to safety. There’s no getting around it. You might like ribbons and frou frou around your four-poster bed, but where a child sleeps should be kept simple and unfussy.

According to the National Childbirth Trust , British Safety Standards are your friend and you should specifically look for products conforming to them. Horrible as it is to even think of such a thing, these protocols are in place to reduce the number of accidental infant deaths that occur each year due to strangulation or suffocation.

It’s non-negotiable – whatever you buy, look out for the British Standards’ number on swing tickets and product specifications. Which? recommendations on this state: “All mattresses should have the BS 1877-10:2011+A1:2012 number on the labelling or instructions. It's preferable if it also carries BS 7177:1996 and BS EN 16890:2017 + A1:2021.”

Comfort and safe sleeping

‘Firm and flat’ is your mantra when it comes to cot mattresses. Both the centre and the edges should yield slightly and then spring back into shape when you apply pressure to the surface and then release it.

The general rule of thumb for safe sleeping is to always place your baby to sleep on their back – even if you own a breathable crib mattress. Though mattress manufacturers try to consider babies who roll onto their tummies during sleep, virtually all health professionals advise that back sleeping is safest.

Besides suffocation risk, some studies claim that there's an additional danger from babies breathing in more carbon dioxide than oxygen when they are not sleeping on their backs.

The mattress should also fit the cot snugly, with no gaps that your baby’s limbs could get stuck in - any gaps should be no more than 3cm. In addition, the NCT recommends that, when the mattress is in position, there’s a minimum 50cm clearance to the height of the cot to prevent a mobile baby from climbing out.

Many mattresses have breathable covers, which helps to ensure air is flowing freely and that your baby won’t overheat. You can help keep your baby at the right temperature in the night by investing in good quality cotton bedding ( baby sleeping bags are the easiest) and ensuring that they are always put on their back to sleep, with her arms free. The Lullaby Trust has good advice on safer sleep and reducing the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).

Durability and cleaning

Whether you’re buying a cot mattress, a travel cot mattress or a cot bed mattress, you must make sure that, as a minimum, it’s protected by a waterproof cover to help keep the mattress clean and dry.

The overwhelming testimony of Mumsnetters is that removable, washable zip-on covers are a must. Not only do they allow you to change bedding quickly when accidents occur, but they also prolong the life of your mattress.

This does make them more expensive, however, so if you’re going for a budget model and it doesn’t have a removable cover, it would be well worth buying a separate protective cover for it.

Eco-credentials

There’s no getting around it. Cot mattresses aren’t a buy for life, so lots will end up in landfill. But if you’re fully committed to a green-friendly solution, be careful to read the small print.

While producers such as The Little Green Sheep (see their Twist cot bed mattress above) are admirably transparent, the consumer organisation Which? believes that others play fast and loose with terminology. They say: "Manufacturers can use the terms ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ on products without needing any sort of certification. There are legal requirements for the labelling of organic foods, but not these products.”

Their advice, and ours, is to scrutinise the small print of product specs to ensure that the materials used are truly what they purport to be.

In a sector where a mattress that broadly fulfils the same function can retail from £20 to over £250, getting what you pay for isn’t necessarily a given.

As a rough guide, foam mattresses are cheap and cheerful and not especially hardwearing, but that might be no bad thing if you’re planning to replace them when those little night accidents come to an end.

Spring-interior mattresses are mini versions of typical adult mattresses and coir and Purflo mattresses are part of a subset of innovative, premium-priced ‘green’ products.

If you’re going for a more premium brand, you might want to think about its longevity. Are secondhand cot mattresses safe?

Secondhand mattresses are best avoided – if only because the links between passed-on mattresses and cot death can neither be confirmed nor refuted. In 2002, a BBC story said that researchers at The Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow claimed to have found a "significant” link between having a secondhand mattress and a risk of cot death. No causation was established, but it’s worth bearing in mind.

The Lullaby Trust charity, set up to provide expert advice on safer baby sleep and to raise awareness of SIDs, also cautions risk. They say: “If you’re using a secondhand mattress, make sure the mattress you choose was previously completely protected by a waterproof cover, with no rips or tears and is in good condition. The mattress should also still be firm and flat to keep your baby sleeping safely.” For little brothers and sisters moving onto an elder sibling’s mattress, make sure that you also do these checks.

You should also ensure that the mattress fits well, with no gaps between the mattress and the cot, and that the mattress itself is both clean and dry.

What size should a cot mattress be?

What’s important is that your mattress fits your cot snugly, with no gaps anywhere, so measure twice before you order. The standard size for a cot is 120cm x 60cm and 140cm x 70cm for a cot bed. However, some cots are now oval or even round, so if yours isn’t standard you might need to buy the mattress that's designed to go with it or get one custom-made.

What is the best thickness for a cot mattress?

For support, your choice of cot mattress should be no thinner than 8cm. However, a minimum of 10cm is what most experts, including Which? , recommend.

Travel cot mattresses tend to be much thinner - sometimes only around 5cm - but they aren’t intended for regular use. You can replace your travel cot mattress with a thicker version but do check that it fits exactly or is designed specifically for your travel cot.

Never be tempted to add a pillow or blankets to make it feel softer or thicker as this is unsafe. And if you add a thicker mattress, do check that there is still 50cm from the top of the mattress to the top of the side of the cot.

How do I test that my cot mattress is firm enough?

It’s very important that a baby’s mattress is firm. It’s necessary for their skeletal development and also is vital in ensuring their safety while sleeping. Before you buy, search online to check the mattress hasn’t been recalled and that there are no other problems with it. When it arrives, check the following:

Run your hand across the top surface of the mattress. It should be completely flat, with no bumps, dips or bunched-up bits.

Press with both hands on various spots on the surface of the mattress. When you remove your hands, there should be no indentation remaining. The mattress should spring back immediately.

Again, using both hands, press all around the edges, checking that the edges are all strong and stable and that they don’t collapse and can’t be pushed in on themselves. Take special care to check this at the corners.

How long does a cot mattress last?

The average lifespan of a cot mattress is anything between 0 to 48 months. After that point, it's time to move into a big kid's bed. The best practice is to always buy a new cot mattress for each child.

How do I clean a cot mattress?

Your mattress should come with instructions on how to clean it, so read these carefully. Be especially careful not to shrink the cover, if it has one, as this may lead to it compressing the mattress, creating gaps around the outside.

But essentially, if you want to give the mattress a thorough clean, first remove the cover, wash it according to the instructions and ensure it is thoroughly dry. Some mattresses can be washed themselves, but most are wipe-clean at best.

Vacuum all surfaces of the mattress, paying particular attention to anywhere dust might gather. Then wipe it all over with a damp cloth. If you have a spill to deal with, check the label to see if you can use a little laundry detergent too, then leave the mattress standing on one side to dry thoroughly - outside if possible.

Do I need to flip my baby's cot mattress?

It’s a good idea to rotate your baby’s mattress 180 degrees every month or so, just so that it wears evenly. Most mattresses these days don’t flip.

Some have a special surface for sleeping on that might be water-repellent or hypoallergenic, for example, so that needs to stay on top. • When, and if possible, travelling during the day and when they are usually awake is always helpful.
• Adjusting sleep and meal patterns as best as possible during travel and arrival at the destination - setting your watch to the destination time zone is a good idea.
• Its often recommended to gradually shift an infant’s or toddler’s sleep schedule 2 or 3 days before travel.
• Exposure to the sun (or bright lights) in the morning when travelling east and in the afternoon when travelling west.
• Hydrate with fluids - air in aeroplane cabins can be dry - staying hydrated will make everyone feel better.
• Scheduling more relaxed, less busy days soon after your arrival is advised to give everyone time to adjust.
• Familiar toys from home and a safe and comfortable travel cot mattress will aid in helping your infant to feel relaxed, content, and secure.

What size is a travel cot mattress?

Travel cot mattresses vary in size and are often smaller than the standard UK cot size mattress ( 120x60cm). It is always best to measure the travel cot to be sure - different brands offer various sizes.

How to clean a travel cot mattress?

Different mattresses will have different care instructions - many have removable, machine-washable covers, some can be tumble-dried. Always be sure to check the washing instructions before.

How thick should a travel cot mattress be?

The cot itself is great, easy enough to put together, it is smaller than a normal cot bed but if youre working with a smaller bedroom then this size is great. I ordered this cot bed for my second child. Previously I have a cot from Mothercare, I wanted the same but obviously they are no longer available. My previous one is very solid and I wanted something similar. For the price this cot bed is very good value for money, I also got a further discount as a new customer. It was the heaviest one of my choices at 22kg, however still feels very light and is easily moved around by myself. My older child is unable to move it though, (and she does jump/swing and climb all over it!) It looks nice and I didn’t notice a strong paint smell as noted from other reviews. My only negative point is I don’t like all the screw holes visible at the end of the cot (as seen in the pictures), I feel it looks unfinished, but maybe once it’s a cot bed this won’t be visible. It was easy for my partner to put together but we haven’t changed from a cot to a bed yet. Overall I am happy with the product and it looks nice in the room. I would prefer it to be slightly heavier/solid and no holes at the end for a more aesthetically pleasing look but it’s great value and my daughter sleeps well in it.. Anonymous. Ordered a white Grace cot bed on Sunday - it was delivered the following Wednesday - excellent service. The cot was well wrapped in a large cardboard box, polystyrene etc and was blemish free. The instruction booklet was clear and gave good advice as to the construction and use of the cot. You do need two to put it together, ond to hold one end whilst the other inserts the screws etc. Having understood the principle of how things worked we soon put it together, 30 minutes at most. Be sure to put the little circular bolts in the holes the right way, with the slot for the screwdriver facing outwards. We bought the cot for visits from our granddaughter who is four months old and so placed the mattress at the the highest setting, but only for the time being. We will need to lower it to the middle setting in a couple of months. We were very pleased with the standard of the cot, very solid and attractive. Choosing the best cot mattress for your baby is essential to ensure that they're safe, secure, and comfortable at night - and it can make the difference between them (and therefore you) getting a good night’s sleep. When you're choosing the  best cot bed  or cot for a newborn baby, a cot mattress is the one item that you must always buy new for each baby. There is evidence that second-hand mattresses can increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and it’s important that any new mattress you buy fits your cot or cot bed. You should also make sure it doesn’t sag in the middle and that it conforms to the British Standards’ prefix BSI number BSEN716. This means that a cot mattress meets certified standards on things like firmness, choking hazards, and cleanliness. "It is essential that the mattress you choose for your baby is flat, firm, and offers your baby lots of support as she sleeps," says  Vickie Bowles  of The Baby Academy. ‘Therefore, ordering the correct size mattress for your cot is important. Our baby gear expert says:  Before you can use the  SnuzSurface cot mattress , you need to let it ‘settle’ and ‘breathe’ for seven days. This is because it needs to reform its proper shape after being vacuum-packed for transport. This can be a little frustrating. However, it is at least nice to look at while you wait - the stylish mattress comes in a deep purple and brilliant white design.

When you can eventually use it, you’ll see it doesn’t just boast good looks. It’s been created with two differing supports: one for a newborn and the other for a toddler. To change these, simply unzip the mattress from its mesh cover and swap it around.

Our tester, Charlotte, says: " Our tester Charlotte tried out both supports on her baby. Overall, she was surprised by the difference they made in her daughter's sleep. ‘She kept waking up on the firmer, newborn side, but she much preferred the softer support that allowed her a bit more movement in her sleep."

But the innovation doesn’t stop there; the mattress is covered with a removable 3D mesh. This is fully washable, so you can confidently get rid of those nasty dust mites. But more importantly, it's fully breathable, allowing for good air circulation at night.

‘Even with a heavy cold and sleeping face down, I felt confident that this mattress provided Adelaide with great breathability,’ said Charlotte.

However, Amelia thinks if you are invested in the environment and have a big enough budget, it’s definitely worth it because of NaturalMat's high-quality materials and hypoallergenic credentials, not to mention that her daughter slept better on it.

3. ikea jättetrött pocket sprung cot mattress.

✅ You don't want to spend a fortune:  Who said you had to take out a small mortgage for your little one's mattress? At just under £100, this mattress offers real value for money, combining quality and a low price.

✅ You want a lightweight mattress: Our tester was able to take this 6kg mattress away with her in her car as she headed off on a staycation with her daughter. To put that weight into perspective, this is about the same heaviness as a lightweight travel stroller. 

✅ You want a removable cover: This washing machine-friendly cover simply zips off. But you'll be pleased to know it's just as easy to pop back on once it's dry, too. 

❌ You want a mattress with all the eco-friendly credentials: Instead, check out the planet-first NaturalMat Quilted Spring Mat or the more affordable Little Green Sheep Twist Natural Cot Mattress.

🔎  IKEA Jättetrött Pocket Sprung Cot Mattress You really can enjoy the wonderful everyday — and on a budget — with IKEA's cot mattress which is comfy, lightweight and easily washed. Priced at under £100, this mattress doesn’t come with tons of innovation but it does have all the essentials that any little sleeper needs. ★★★★

Our baby gear expert says: It’s a common misconception that an IKEA mattress needs an IKEA cot. But this isn’t the case and this 140 x 70 cm mattress fits our tester’s cot perfectly. ‘It's actually a nice fit, and there are no gaps where I felt concerned Margot might put her hands down the side,’ said mum Hollie.

IKEA’s Jättetrött Pocket Sprung Cot Mattress  is lightweight, and tester Hollie was even able to take it away in her car when she headed off on a staycation with Margot. She also liked its firmness and how the pocket springs give it a flexible feel, but the major plus is its removable cover. This makes it very easy to clean in the machine should your baby have an accident in the night.

Our tester, Hollie, says: "It's easy to get the outer cover back on the mattress once you've removed it so it's not a laborious task every time you want to wash it,’ said Hollie, who also liked the attention-to-detail with the zips - which are carefully hidden under a pouch - away from little fingers."

Verdict:  At under £100, this mattress offers real value for money, combining quality and a low price. ‘It's affordable, and it's good quality with pocket springs that I found nice and supportive for Margot,’ said Hollie. For these reasons, we’ve named IKEA’s Jättetrött Pocket Sprung Cot Mattress our best budget buy cot mattress.

4. Purflo Breathable Cot Mattress

✅ You want a breathable mattress:  In this design, babies sleep on a mesh surface, which helps to significantly reduce the risk of SIDs, thanks to its breathable qualities. This means no matter whether they sleep on their back, front or side, it allows air to circulate very easily, making it very safe for babies. 

✅ You want a lightweight mattress:  Due to its hollow frame design, the Purflo Breathable Cot Mattress is very lightweight. 

✅ You want a mattress that's fully washable: Unlike other mattresses, the Purflo Breathable Cot Mattress is also fully washable. Our tester said that she loved this element as it gave her confidence that the whole surface her daughter was sleeping on was clean.

❌ You don't want to assemble a mattress: Here's a word of warning — this mattress comes in 20 different pieces. Our tester says: "The assembly isn’t complicated, but I think the instructions could be clearer, especially for flatpack novices like me."

Our baby gear expert says:  Purflo’s one-of-a-kind design is not your average cot mattress. Its hollow frame design means that it’s fully washable and breathable, as well as being lightweight. This cot mattress does require a bit of assembly. ‘[I] wasn’t thrilled (in fact, dismayed) when the  Purflo cot bed mattress  came in 20 separate pieces,’ admitted our tester Darryl Baker. ‘If you don't want to or can't put furniture together, this isn't for you as it requires an initial assembly of the frame.’  But it comes with instructions, and she got there in the end.

Once you’ve put in the effort, you will be richly rewarded. The innovative mesh fabric supports your baby while allowing them to breath easily. 

Our tester, Darryl, says her daughter Cole had a cold, but the lightweight mattress helped her congestion at night and during naps, giving her "a comfortable night’s sleep." One of the most exciting features for parents is that, unlike any others, this cot mattress is fully washable. You can be confident that all those nasty cold and cough bugs, plus any dust mites, will be washed away in the machine.

Verdict:  At £189, this cot mattress is a pricey purchase, but Darryl believes that it’s worth spending the extra if you are 'someone who is open to trying something at the forefront of new designs and looking for the safest sleeping space for their baby'.

Our baby gear expert says:  This  Little Green Sheep Twist Natural Cot Mattress  comes with dual sides: a firmer one for newborns and a softer one, specially designed for older babies who move around more in the night. ‘Suitability for a toddler isn’t something I've seen with many cot mattresses, so this stands out to me,’ said our tester Rebecca.

As it’s made of all-natural materials, including coconut, latex, wool and cotton, this mattress is also temperature regulating, and Rebecca reported that her 16-month son Louis slept very well and was ‘neither too hot nor too cold’. Its natural credentials make this a good option for babies with allergies or a history of family allergies and its breathability is second to none – even Rebecca could breathe when she tested it out for herself. Like all coir mattresses, this Little Green Sheep one is environmentally friendly and is recyclable once your little one has grown out of it.

Our tester, Rebecca, says:  "My baby slept very well on this mattress. I think the temperature regulation is great. Verdict:  As you’d expect from something that’s premium quality and has environmentally friendly ingredients, this mattress comes with a premium price point and retails at £219. ‘I think it's worthy of the ''luxury'' marketing spiel,’ Rebecca said. She’d recommend it to environmentally conscious parents but flagged that they’d also have to purchase a mattress protector separately, adding to the cost.

Our baby gear expert says:  Many parents aren’t looking for a cot mattress that does everything but just want a safe sleeping environment for their little one.  Mamas and Papas Essential Pocket Sprung Mattress  is for them. ‘This is a basic mattress but there’s nothing wrong with that,’ said tester Charlotte. ‘My daughter slept very well on it and it felt lovely and soft to touch.’ In addition, this mattress is on the firmer side and has an inner construction that includes ‘crush-resistant walls’.

This might not suit all babies but it’s advised that newborns especially sleep on a supportive mattress.

Our tester, Charlotte, says:  ‘I think after the first 18 months you might have to move to another mattress that is a little softer and can accommodate more mobile toddlers,’ added Charlotte.

For parents who are worried about allergies, there is a hypoallergenic cover which is also washable to rid your baby’s cot of any dust mites and cold germs. ‘I liked that the inner part of the mattress had a wipe-clean cover as I felt confident that what Adelaide was sleeping on was really clean,’ our tester said.

Verdict:  This Mamas and Papas cot mattress offers good value for money and would suit a family who values functionality over style and fancy extras.

Our baby gear expert says:  This  Ickle Bubba cot mattress  is the cheapest on our list and consists of pocket springs contained in a breathable nursery foam. Amelia, who tested the mattress on her 22-month-daughter Olga, found it wanting for an energetic toddler. ‘She seemed to roll and fidget more when I put her down - perhaps because she could feel the springs and it creaked slightly - although she soon settled herself,’ she said.

Amelia thought a smaller baby, who wasn’t as mobile, might fair better. 

Our tester, Amelia, says:  "‘It wasn’t as firm as I’d have liked,’ she added. Another downside was that Amelia found, even with the correct-sized sheets, the corners of the mattress curled up. But despite this, Olga slept just as well on this mattress as her usual one.

While Amelia didn’t especially like the feel of the hypoallergenic, removable cover, she was impressed by how easy it was to change and wash in the machine, especially after her daughter had a heavy cold. The fact that this mattress is lightweight also makes night-time accidents quicker and easier to sort out."

Verdict:  This mattress is competitively priced and would suit parents on a limited budget, or perhaps those who are kitting out an entire nursery for their firstborn.

How to choose the best cot mattress for you

A well-chosen cot mattress will help your baby sleep, keep them safe at night and also be easy to clean. And as we all know, babies aren’t the tidiest of creatures!  The Sleep Mums ’ Sarah and Cat suggest: ‘If possible, buy your cot and mattress together to make sure they fit well together with no gaps. Ensure you have enough well fitting sheets. Finally - but very importantly, check cleaning instructions - because you're going to need them!'

If you haven’t bought your cot and mattress together, the first thing you need to be aware of is the size of the mattress that will fit your cot. It should be a snug fit so that the gap between the mattress and the cot side is no more than 3cm for safety. Cot mattress sizes vary but the more ‘common’ sizes are 50cm x 80cm, 60cm x 120cm and 70cm x 140cm. If you need a mattress that isn’t one of these sizes, don’t despair, many brands offer several sizes and some even do a made-to-fit service, although with a premium price attached.

Once you know the size you’re after, think about what type of cot mattress you want. There are four main categories of cot mattress currently available.

• Foam cot mattress  - these are generally cheaper than other mattresses. In addition, they are lightweight and support a baby’s natural posture.
• Spring or pocket-spring cot mattress  - these have a coiled spring interior. This means they hold their shape better, and are typically sturdier than a foam mattress.
• Coir cot mattress  - These mattresses have a natural core of coconut fibre. This makes them more breathable so they are good for babies with allergies.
• Hollow frame cot mattress  - this mattress consists of a mesh cover over a wireframe. It's only made by the brand Purflo and therefore this is the only fully washable and breathable mattress on the market.

All of these cot mattress types have been tested by the reviewers for this cot mattresses buying guide. But whichever size or type of mattress you choose, remember to put your baby to sleep on its back. That's because this is the safest sleeping position.

Whatever age your baby is, you need to think carefully about the right cot mattress. However, make sure you choose a cot mattress that is firm and flat, especially for a newborn. The middle and the edges should yield slightly but then spring back into shape when you hold them down and release them.

If you have a baby who regularly posits in their sleep or has nappy accidents at night, choose a mattress that is easy to clean. Some cot mattresses have removable covers that can be put in the washing machine. You can also buy a washable cover separately. This is highly recommended as they avoid moisture seeping into the mattress, for instance, which causes bacteria and mould to grow.

A cot mattress should last until your child is a toddler and ready to move into a big kid's bed. However, always check individual products for age limitations. ‘A new mattress for your baby’s cot should last about five years if it is well looked after,’ says Vickie Bowles. ‘If it remains firm, supportive, and intact you may continue to use it for a little longer.’

Cot and cot bed mattresses should be 10cm thick. However, travel cot mattresses are thinner as babies don’t sleep long-term in them. The NCT recommends that there should be 50cm between the height of the cot and the top of a mattress. This is so that older, more-mobile children will be prevented from climbing out of the cot.

Our Deputy Editor  Heidi Scrimgeour  came up with a shortlist of cot mattresses based on her product knowledge and industry research. She looked at the latest offering from the market-leading brands - and as a mum of three and a parenting journalist for 15 years, what she doesn't know about baby products isn't worth knowing. 

Next, she selected the final product line-up from a broad range of price points so there's a best cot mattress recommendation here to suit all budgets. Then, we called on our pool of reliable parent testers and assigned each of them a mattress to review with their baby. They tested the product rigorously for at least ten days.

After this, our parent testers gave each product a rating out of five for overall performance. We also asked for comprehensive feedback on key factors including design appeal, comfort, value for money, how well their babies settled and slept, extra features, and how easy the cot mattresses were to clean.
