Where to STOP along Icefields Parkway:

  • Peyto Lake (Icefields Parkway): Famous for its turquoise color. An easy walk to the viewing platform on the south end of the lake. For less touristy views and the highest point on the Icefields Parkway drive, keep climbing to Bow Summit Lookout . It’s only about 30-minutes round-trip.
  • Glacier Skywalk (Icefields Parkway): Test your nerves on this glass-floored observation walk, 918 feet above Sunwapta Valley.
  • Sunwapta Falls (Icefields Parkway): A narrow 30-foot wide and 60-foot high powerful waterfall, with two drops. About 15 minutes south of Athabasca Falls.

Day 2 of SCENIC Drive from Calgary to Vancouver: Kelowna

Okanagan Valley BC Canada, where to stop on road trip from Edmonton to Vancouver

This second day is another beautiful scenic drive from Jasper AB to Kelowna BC. It’s a 7-hour drive (600 km) through mountains, thick woods and then the lovely Okanagan Valley.

Another scenic route to Vancouver is through Whistler via Highway 99 (740 km in just under 9 hours). However, then you’d miss Kelowna. So, we recommend going to Whistler as a day-trip from Vancouver instead.

Where to STOP on day 2 of your scenic drive:

  • Wells Gray Provincial Park (near Clearwater): The most iconic waterfall is Helmcken Falls (463-ft), the fourth tallest in Canada. It’s 45 minutes north of Clearwater and an easy 10-minute walk from the parking lot. Along the way, stop at Spahats Creek Falls (246-ft) and Dawson Falls (300-ft wide). Guided canoe, fishing and horseback riding trips are also available.
  • Kelowna : Winery-hop with spectacular views of the Okanagan Valley. Explore Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park’s historic railway trails over trestles and tunnels. And wander Kelowna’s waterfront park, beach, and boardwalk. Take your time, stopping in at shops, restaurants and bars along the way.

Day 3 of SCENIC Drive from Calgary to Vancouver: Whistler

Lookout in Squamish BC Canada, where to stop on road trip from Edmonton to Vancouver

You have two options for experiencing BC’s famous Sea to Sky Highway: skip Kelowna to drive from Kamloops to Whistler, or make it a day trip from Vancouver. I recommend the second option, so you experience both Kelowna and Whistler.

The final stretch of your drive from Kelowna to Vancouver via Penticton is 5.5 hours (460 km).  Add 1.5 hours to continue to Whistler.

The first section between Kelowna and Penticton through the Okanagan Valley is gorgeous, as the road follows Okanagan Lake the entire way. In my opinion, Highway 3 is a prettier drive to Vancouver compared to going through Merritt.

Give yourself time to stop at orchards and markets you see along the road. Fresh fruit and PIES = the best BC road trip food!

Where to STOP:

  • Harrison Hot Springs : Located two hours east of Vancouver, this charming village is home to (yup…) hot springs. Plus, beaches and promenades along the lake.
  • Bridal Veil Falls Provincial Park : This lovely 197-ft drop over a smooth rock face creates a veil-like cascade. A favorite waterfall in BC near Harrison Hot Springs.

3. RELAXED Road Trip from Calgary to Vancouver VIA Crowsnest Pass

We prefer the road trip from Calgary to Vancouver through the Crowsnest Pass and along the USA border. This drive is more relaxing compared to Banff National Park, and takes you through pretty mountain villages and the gorgeous Osoyoos area.

But, it’s longer. This drive from Calgary to Vancouver via Crowsnest Pass takes 14 hours (1,240 km).  You can comfortably do this drive in two days.

Where to STAY between Calgary and Vancouver via Crowsnest Pass:

  • Rossland : A pretty ski village with cute cafes and shops, half-way between Calgary and Vancouver. Red Mountain has a fantastic resort hotel and chalets, and there are some cute places to stay right inside town, too.

After transferring to Banff from Calgary, tourists can take the Rocky Mountaineer to Vancouver. Located in Alberta, the resort town of Banff has a little something for everyone, from boutiques and restaurants to spas and outdoor activities. Its crown jewel is Banff National Park, home to black bears, grizzlies, cougars, wolves, moose and elk. Bighorn sheep have even been known to hide among the park's rocky outcroppings.

If you love the outdoors, consider a visit to nearby Lake Minnewanka, which has lake cruises, SCUBA excursions and a scenic drive that leads you back toward Banff and its soaring mountain peaks. #2 Travel tip: Travel to the Rockies

Travel to the Rockies Calgary is a great starting point for many Canadian Rockies trips. You can head straight to Banff National Park from Calgary Airport — the drive takes less than two hours.

Jasper

Many Calgary to Vancouver tours include a stop in Jasper, the perfect place for wilderness enthusiasts. The alpine town has shimmering lakes, natural hot springs, hiking trails and more, providing almost limitless opportunities to stay active on your vacation. While you're in town, don't miss Jasper National Park, home to ancient glaciers, tranquil forests and snow-capped mountain peaks.

As you explore the park, don't be surprised if you encounter elk, moose, wolves and other wildlife. Jasper National Park is also a popular place for birdwatching, so keep an eye out for ravens, eagles, geese, ducks, owls and other winged friends. After exploring the outdoors, head into town for a bite to eat. Jasper has everything from hole-in-the-wall cafés to Michelin-rated restaurants.

Lake Louise

A highlight of Banff National Park is world-renown Lake Louise. This glacier-fed lake is known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters. During the summer, popular activities include fishing and canoeing. Lake Louise is also known for its extensive trail system, which includes Lake Agnes Trail, Plain of Six Glaciers Trail and the Big Beehive.

When colder temperatures set in, Lake Louise transforms into a popular ski resort. Due to its location, Lake Louise has a longer ski season than any other place in Canada. It’s the ideal destination for anyone who loves whooshing down the slopes on a mound of fresh powder. If you're interested in something a little more low-key, check out Samson Mall or the upscale shops at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Hotel.

Emerald Lake

Nestled in Yoho National Park, Emerald Lake stands as one of the most popular destinations in the Canadian Rockies. The lake doesn't thaw out until around June, so July and August are the most popular times to visit. If you visit during the summer, you can expect to see turquoise waters dotted with boats, kayaks and canoes. As the summer season comes to a close, the water becomes less colourful due to the addition of sediment from the melting glacier.

During the winter, Emerald Lake has excellent skiing and snowshoeing, but many travellers prefer to relax inside a comfortable lodge while the snow falls around them. The area is home to several restaurants, including a bistro and two casual cafés, ensuring everyone in your group can find something they enjoy. While you're in town, don't forget to visit nearby Lake Louise.

Top 5 airlines serving from Vancouver to Alberta

On time departure and exceptional customer service during the entire flight.

My flight with Korean Air went quite well, I've flown with them for many years and have grown accustomed to their great service.

Overall, very uneventful and pleasant experience. Most importantly, no delays.

The flight crews were extremely professional helpful and courteous. Departure and arrival times were accurate. No delay. Thanks

The flight crews were extremely professional, helpful, and courteous. Departure and arrival times were accurate. No delay. I will use K airline again. Thanks

Not very comfortable seated in the back plane due to turbulence

We were seated at the back and that was very uncomfortable for me with the turbulence we experienced on our way to Chicago.

Everything about Korean air is great, hands down! Will always prefer this airline from other carriers.

Great crew, decent food Charging plugs were broken on both seats next to me. Only the USB port was available, and that charges, very, very slowly. Seat was also broken, it would not lock into position when reclining.

Korean Air had great service and the Bibimbap dish was the best airplane food I’ve ever had. It was a long flight so in between the two meals they served customers could get Shin ramen. The flight attendants let my children use a pair of nice headphones for the flight and had earbuds and slippers for all the adults. The flight was long but the time passed by relatively quickly because they have many great shows in their entertainment TV. I watched the BTS Love Yourself and Speak Yourself concerts 💜

Overall great experience. All four members of my family were seated together without paying extra to reserve seats. Everything was on time. Food was great and healthy. Media entertainment was good. Rock music could be added as a listening choice. No issue with baggages. Flight attendants were friendly and helpful. I would recommend EVA to friends and family.

Their announcement was not quite clear in Chinese. The rest is pretty good.

Flight was smooth no complaint. Except maybe better food choice for the long flight…

Great experience for a long 13-14 hours flight. Great pilot and crew, everyone is pleasant and attentive to the passengers.

The type of the food requested (Asian vegetarian) was not properly met with. They have very limited snack items that may compensate for the main meals.

Eva Air's Business Class is pretty decent. With the given price, I think that the food can be better.

Pleasant, comfortable, and entertaining. All told, ZERO issues with it. And sadly, so far the flight was WAY more comfortable than the hellhole that is "Lambug Beach Resort" at Badian Beach!

Pleasant crew. Very long flight, a bit uncomfortable at times being seated, but not too bad.

1. The entrance to boarding gate G5 (which is at a lower level) is from the walkway (which is at the upper level). That entrance was locked and there was no place for hundreds of people to sit at the upper level, for a long time as the flight was 45 minutes late. 2. The choice of movies on board was extermely limited and poor. 3. The staff was unhelpful and faked politeness.

They didn’t have ice for the drinks and only gave you half a cup of your beverage. Did not have enough water. I got dehydrated

The flight who provided services on my row had some not-nice attitude and not smiling at all.

Very good , the weather was terrible, but i admired the professionality and politeness and care from the crew, and the excellent contition of the plane

My flight to Los Angeles was canceled Had to book another flight and you charged me extra $500 Very bad experience

The plane was uncomfortable. I paid extra for more legroom but the seat was still uncomfortable. Other seats on the same exact row didn’t have to pay extra but still have extra legroom. I didn’t understand why I needed to pay $170 for. It was Iike China airline just wants to make money off their passengers. It was unfair.

Liked that I could pick my seat and have a special meal without an extra charge. Luggage is reasonable for overseas trip. What could have been better is boarding and leaving on time.

They were helpful, considerate with asking us for standby preboarding with our infant, gave us toys and excellent service onboard. They were always on time, even early boarding once! All our luggage arrived intact, and they even brought our baby car seat to oversized for us. We love China Airlines!

Staff is friendly, great variety of entertainment, check in a little messy but due to people not listening. Overall a pleasant experience. Would use again in the future.

It felt like a new plane. Decent leg room in economy, food was fine, and the plane didn’t feel super dry and uncomfortable.

Better training to have qualified crews and services. My flight was from around 12 midnight Friday Taipei to Vancouver. After two hours first meal (2:00 Am -8:00 ) no crew available for even asking for some water. I was even willing to pay for water. For breakfast after 8 hours the only drink was tea and coffee no water or juice.

3 of the 4 flights had delays despite the weather being fine, but still managed to make all connections

My biggest complaint is the comfort and no good movies to choose from. My headphones didn't work either. 😔

Bad experience. Departure time delayed from 1610 to 1740. After the flight was pushed back, pilot said there was a technical issue on the aircraft and we couldn’t take off. Delayed another hour to solve it.

The flight was cancelled. I wasn't informed where to check in, how and when. It wasn't easy to get in contact with Cathay service representative, and they were not very helpful... The staff on the airport - Air Canada (I assume) were the most helpful, kind efficient, patient... Thank you for all your help and care, for your patience, for your professionalism!!!

The overall flight went well and the aircrew was pleasant.

Very comfortable Prem economy seats for a long haul flight. Had a problem with the tv that the crew fixed so was great!

we were upgraded which was a blessing and tender mercy for us. I fell the day before and was in extreme pain from knee to shoulder. Sitting in a more comfortable seat during the flight was an unexpected blessing and experience.

My seat was sold off to someone else. Had to wait 9 hours to catch the next filght. Definitely will never use Cathay Pacific again. Bad, very bad airline. will comment on google reviews too.

Not impressed with check in desk staff at Vancouver airport. Not a professional mind service and not cared or tried to help. Don’t think I would fly with them again

I felt thirsty and asked the flight attendent for water, but no one came for more than half an hour.

The crew were fine. I didn’t enjoy the food at all. I found it unappetising and really had trouble eating it. The comfort level was fine and our return flight is with Cathay Pacific but honestly I probably wouldn’t fly Cathay Pacific again.

We initially flew from Osaka to Vancouver and ear buds and food were all inclusive. We were surprised that from Vancouver to Toronto we had to pay for all of this - and the flight attendant did not give us what we ordered/paid for. $6 for a bag of almonds is crazy - and I asked for hummus. Very surprised we had to pay for the ear buds in order to watch the movies.

I was offered earphones at the beginning of the flight, my meal and snacks were good and the attendant was proactive with all my needs and offered seconds of drinks. She was very attentive even when there were .any demands on her

Very poor. Flight was cancelled last minute to deploy the plane for another route

Prepaid for my seat selection over a month in advance only to be told when I arrive at the airport that the plane has changed and no pre-selected seats would be honored and refunds would not be issued immediately. Was forced to separate from my traveling companion Air Canada. Unsurprisingly was no assistance in this whatsoever. Plane. We got switched on to also has no entertainment options available

They changed my flight twice. The 2nd time they changed it they did so the day before the scheduled departure and replaced the lie flat seat in a 777 to a 737. I paid extra to be in the 777 only for them to change it. Then the departure was delayed twice. The connecting flight was also delayed.

It was a domestic flight so the food was not included. But we had not even a little snack and by the end of the flight they were coming around serving water.

Seating is comfortable, boarding is well organized. Toilets are very small. Even though I’m petite, still find no room to move around. Toilet paper holder hanging loosely, eventually they fell on the floor. The small sink is too shallow that causes water splashing on the floor. It doesn’t look pleasant. I didn’t purchase food or watch the entertainment, so no comments.

Fruit and cheese platter was dubious quality. The edges of the cheese pieces were dried, plastic looking. Old.

Treating guests with respect when they are having issues. Myself and another guest were expected to climb over someone who had a disability and was clearly not well. There was no assistance. Also when the lady beside me asked to see if there was a possibility to get off the plane as soon as they were able because her husband is having emergency surgery the flight attendant’s response was so rude and dismissive.

Best Times To Visit Vancouver, Canada

The best times to visit Vancouver are from March to May and from September to November when the weather is mild and hotel rooms can be found at bargain rates. Summer is the most popular time thanks to the promise of warmer weather; however, if you're planning a trip then, make sure to reserve your hotel room at least two or three weeks in advance. If you're a winter sports fanatic, then don't let the biting temperatures deter you: This city makes a great home base for skiers and snowboarders looking to challenge the powder at  Grouse Mountain  or nearby  Whistler . Regardless of when you visit, packing layers is a must to keep you comfortable.

A first-timer’s guide to Vancouver Island

Explore stately Victoria (pictured), hike long-distance trails, catch a wave in Tofino and much more besides on Vancouver Island Š Aaron Black / Getty Images RFC

Once dismissed as a sleepy retirement home for aging Anglophiles, Vancouver Island has acquired a racier profile in recent years, courtesy of its free-spirited surfing towns, pastoral wineries, community-built biking networks and extravagantly eccentric accommodations.

If you’ve ever spent time fantasizing about “hanging ten” in Tofino , sleeping in spherical treehouses, visiting Canada ’s only commercial tea farm or climbing above the forest canopy on a wooden skywalk, welcome to heaven.

Here's everything you need to know before you visit Vancouver Island for the first time.

When should I go to Vancouver Island?

Most of Vancouver Island has a relatively mild climate. Victoria , in the south, is the balmiest city in Canada, while the nearby Cowichan Valley, famed for its viticulture, is practically Mediterranean. These two areas can be visited year round, although late spring and summer are the driest times. Tofino is another year-round destination with surfing conditions at their best in September and October. The storm-watching season runs from November through February when the winter squalls are spectacular.

The months of July, August and September enjoy dry, semi-drought conditions, perfect for east and west coast beaches and long-distance hikes such as the West Coast Trail (open May 1 to September 30). Most of the island’s rain falls between mid-October and April. For Mt Washington skiers, the winter season usually runs from early December to early April.

For the best prices, avoid high summer and public holidays (Canada has one every month). Some of the island’s smaller towns – most notably Tofino – can get very crowded during the school summer holidays (July and August), meaning you’ll need to book accommodations months in advance.

Mant people are milling around beside a fountain outside the Legislative Assembly Parliament Building of British Columbia in Victoria, on a sunny day.

How much time should I spend on Vancouver Island?

Short island breaks from Vancouver can be spread over a long weekend, although once you’ve factored in ferry travel, you probably won’t get much further than Victoria and the Saanich Peninsula. To take in additional highlights, such as the Cowichan Valley and Tofino, bank on at least five days. If you’re aiming to visit the island’s wilder north coast and/or indulge in some backcountry adventures, one week is the bare minimum.

How do I get to Vancouver Island?

The only way to get to the island from the mainland is by ferry or airplane. Victoria International Airport has connections to major Canadian cities, plus Seattle in the US. Small planes serve airports in Port Hardy, Campbell River, Tofino and Nanaimo . Harbour Air runs seaplanes between Vancouver and Victoria harbors.

The main ferry services are run by BC Ferries , which operates vessels between Tsawwassen (Vancouver) and Swartz Bay (for Victoria); Tsawwassen and Duke Point (Nanaimo); and Horseshoe Bay (Vancouver) and Departure Bay (Nanaimo). There’s also a smaller central island ferry that runs between Comox and Powell River on the Sunshine Coast. All Vancouver Island ferries carry cars.

Direct international ferries connect Port Angeles in Washington State , USA, with Victoria. The  Black Ball car ferry runs four times a day in either direction in the summer and twice a day in the winter. The journey lasts 90 minutes. The passenger-only  Victoria Clipper ferry operates daily between Victoria and Seattle, USA.

Is it easy to get around Vancouver Island?

In short, yes. While the island has a relatively scant road network, especially in the north and west, the main highways are in good condition and a car will get you to most places that are of interest to travelers.

The island’s main north-south highway runs between Victoria and Port Hardy – a total distance of 500km (311 miles). It’s called Hwy 1 (the Trans-Canada Highway) between Victoria and Nanaimo and Hwy 19 further north.

Vancouver Island Connector has one daily bus in either direction between Victoria and Tofino, stopping at Nanaimo, Port Alberni and several other towns.  Island Link offers a more comprehensive service running multiple buses between Victoria and Tofino, Victoria and Campbell River, and Campbell River and Port Hardy. Book at least a day in advance.

There are currently no public trains operating on the island.

Top things to do on Vancouver Island

Surf or storm-watch in tofino.

Abutting the turbulent seas of the Pacific Ocean with a necklace of broad sandy beaches,  Tofino is, inarguably, the best place in Canada to go surfing. From semicircular Cox Bay (host of numerous surfing competitions) to blustery Long Beach inside Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, the swells are legendary – and not just for their wave-riding potential. Backed by a smattering of low-rise accommodations, Tofino has become a popular storm-watching destination in recent decades, with its winter tempests perfectly complementing the elemental surroundings.

Sit down to afternoon tea in Victoria

While Victoria is an increasingly diverse city, it still clings in part to the British traditions of its past, a legacy reflected in its grand legislative building, “royal” museum and local penchant for afternoon tea. The tea ritual prevails in an array of refined cafes and tearooms scattered around town, where fluffy scones and dainty cakes are paired with refreshing cups of orange pekoe sipped from fine china.

The poshest – and also most expensive – place to partake in the repast is the  Fairmont Empress Hotel , where “high tea” (finger sandwiches, homemade pastries and fresh scones) is served in a regal lounge.

Visit a cidery in the Cowichan Valley

The Cowichan Valley is Vancouver Island’s own Provence, where gentle hills and a warm Mediterranean-like climate provide a fertile environment for vineyards, farm-to-table restaurants and craft drinks. A notable innovator is  Merridale , a craft-cider maker and microdistillery in the farming community of Cobble Hill, whose rustic grounds are speckled with a gnarly orchard and large, gabled barns. Inside, there’s a tasting bar dispatching samples of the fruity booze, a patio bistro serving crusty apple pie and posh yurts for overnight stays.

Feel the full force of nature on the West Coast Trail

Muddy, swampy and slow-going for much of its course, the perennially popular  West Coast Trail is one of Canada’s most celebrated hikes. The 75km (47-mile) trail of ladders, bridges, creek crossings, rock-hopping and beachcombing hugs the Pacific shoreline for most of its course and incorporates large tracts of Indigenous land. You’ll need a permit, camping equipment and between five and seven days to complete it, but despite fickle weather and the ruggedness of the beaches and adjacent forest, the rewards are immense. Book your passage well in advance.

See one of Canada’s best Indigenous cultural museums in Alert Bay

Head north to Alert Bay on tiny Cormorant Island to see one of the best manifestations of Indigenous culture in Canada. The  U’mista Cultural Centre is a unique museum modeled on a wooden longhouse that displays a vast collection of Kwakwaka'wakw artifacts – including masks, carvings and totems – reclaimed after being confiscated by Canadian authorities in the early 20th century, when potlatch gift-giving ceremonies were prohibited.

Climb above the forest on the Malahat Skywalk

Opened in 2021 and built in collaboration with the Malahat Nation, this novel Skywalk rises like a giant wood-and-glass basket above the forest just off Hwy 1, 30km (19 miles) northwest of Victoria. A 600m-long (1969ft) elevated walkway leads through arbutus forest to the 32m-high (105ft) multi-tiered tower that's been fitted with multiple viewpoints, a bouncy adventure net and a helter-skelter-style slide that’ll shoot you back down to the bottom in 15 seconds.

A male mountain biker is cycling on a rugged path between trees in a forest

My favorite thing to do on Vancouver Island

I’m no daredevil mountain biker, but the extensive and unique trail network around the central-island village of Cumberland is my favorite place for downhill practice (and boy do I need it). The trails were built by a local nonprofit called the  United Riders of Cumberland in the early 2000s with the cooperation of Canadian timber companies. Around the same time, an enterprising group of village residents purchased an adjacent portion of old growth forest to save it from logging and furnished it with walking trails.

To support the two-wheeled and two-legged tourists, Cumberland’s once downbeat main street of mining-era buildings has sprouted a cool array of independent shops and restaurants. Last time I was in town, I stayed at the  Riding Fool , a friendly hostel with bike rentals available at the adjacent  Dodge City Cycles .

How much money do I need for Vancouver Island?

Prices on the island mostly reflect those of mainland British Columbia (BC) and the rest of Canada. Travelers from the US, Eurozone and the UK may find things slightly cheaper than at home.

How much money you’ll need will depend on the season, your location and your choice of activities. Hit tiny Tofino in the summer for whale-watching and a dinner of baked halibut washed down with a bottle of Muscadet and things could get pricey. But visit nearby Ucluelet in the shoulder season to sample beer in the local brewpub and hike the elemental Wild Pacific Trail for free, and you’ll have some cash left in the coffers.

If you’re just visiting the Victoria area, you can stretch your budget by ditching the car (meaning no parking fees), traveling “walk-on” with the ferry and taking the cheap public bus from the Swartz Bay ferry terminal into Victoria.

Typical prices:

  • Ferry fares for cars/walk-on passengers: from C$50/19.85
  • Front-country camping per night: C$20–35
  • Backcountry camping: C$5
  • Room for two in mid-range hotel: C$180–240
  • Kayak rental (two hours): from C$50
  • Victoria – Tofino bus ticket: C$73
  • Local bus fares: C$2.50
  • Coffee: C$3–5
  • Fish ‘n’ chips: C$16–22

A whale breaches out of the sea off the coast of Vancouver Island

Are there any wild animals?

There are plenty. Zodiac boats leave direct from Victoria’s Inner Harbour on whale-watching excursions year round. Tofino and Telegraph Cove are also known for their wildlife cruises, and sightings of dolphins, otters and whales are common.  Prince of Whales is the best island operator.

Black bears are present across Vancouver Island and are regularly spotted on popular wooded hikes such as the West Coast and Juan de Fuca trails. There are no grizzly bears on the island itself, but boat trips operated by  Tide Rip run during summer from Telegraph Cove to Knight Inlet on the mainland, where grizzlies are relatively common.

Unbeknownst to many, the island has the highest concentration of cougars in North America.

What's the bike culture like?

Vancouver Island is one of the most bike-friendly places in Canada. Urban Victoria has a large and growing network of dedicated bike lanes that crisscross the downtown core and complement a wider web of multi-use trails, including the 55km (34-mile) Galloping Goose Trail and the 29km (18-mile) Lochside Trail, both of which are built on top of old railway lines. Further north, the twin surf towns of Tofino and Ucluelet are linked by the newer ʔapsčiik t̓ašii (pronounced “ups-cheek ta-shee”) trail that passes all the best Pacific beaches.

For off-road action, Cumberland has one of the most comprehensive single-track mountain biking networks in BC, with 170 named trails and a strong reputation among cyclists for its diversity and competitive edge.

How English is Victoria?

Victoria isn't as English as it used to be, but you can still enjoy several genuine British-style pubs in the BC capital, including such downtown haunts as  The Sticky Wicket (with a cricketing theme), where the menu still lists bangers and mash.

Craigdarroch Castle is a grand neo-Romanesque mansion that once belonged to a British coal baron. It wouldn’t look out of place in the Scottish Highlands.

Fish ‘n’ chips is a local staple, and authentic versions can be procured at the floating food shacks of Fisherman’s Wharf . Afternoon tea is also popular – Murchies Tea & Coffee on Government St does a cheap version.

Look out for games of cricket in Beacon Hill Park in the summer and don’t miss the world-class floral displays at  Butchart Gardens in nearby Brentwood Bay.

Two hikers are crossing a wooden bridge in a forested area along the Juan de Fuca Trail on Vancouver Island

What are the best long-distance hiking trails?

The island has three multiday backcountry hiking trails, all regarded as classics.

The West Coast Trail is world famous and was once used as a rescue route for shipwrecked sailors. It’s open from May to September, and aspiring hikers must book in advance to secure a space.

The 47km (29-mile) Juan de Fuca Trail is a lesser-known southern extension of the West Coast Trail with no prior reservations necessary.

The newer, more remote 43km (27-mile) North Coast Trail links sandy coves, empty beaches and thick, wind-contorted rainforest via a rough, unkempt path that utilizes sections of boardwalk and cable cars to cross creeks and rivers.

The all-encompassing  Vancouver Island Trail runs south to north from Victoria to Cape Scott, though it still lacks proper signage in some places. See the trail website for details.

Are there any national parks?

There are two national parks on Vancouver Island: Pacific Rim National Park Reserve , established in 1970, and Gulf Islands National Park Reserve , designated in 2003. The former abuts the stormy west coast between the twin surf towns of Tofino and Ucluelet and is split into three sections: the West Coast Trail (a hiking route), Broken Group Islands (only reachable by boat) and the more accessible Long Beach Unit, where there’s a visitor center and a raft of beach activities.

The Gulf Island National Park Reserve consists of numerous disconnected areas spread across a dozen landfalls on the so-called Gulf Island archipelago between Vancouver and Victoria. Pender and Mayne Islands are the easiest to reach on the public ferry network.
