Types of Luggage Carts with Wheels

Standard or non folding.

A standard luggage cart is the type that you see at hotels, resorts, and airports. They are large, heavy and sturdy with large bases or platforms. Sometimes they include hooks or racks where you can hang clothes or other accessories. These carts are also found at airports.

Luggage carts are available for rent in the US at airports and typically free of charge outside the US. They may cost you $3 to $6 for a one-time-use.

You’re not able to take them on the plane or use them outside of the airport, which is one reason why many people buy their own folding or portable luggage cart.

Folding, Compact or Portable

These are popular because they are so convenient. One reason people buy them is because it is accessible from the minute they leave their home all the way until they reach their destination.

Folding luggage carts are compact and lightweight. They typically fold right up with ease, including their base. Luggage straps to them, making it easier to carry large loads wherever you travel.

People love folding portable luggage carts because they minimize the chance of damage to luggage and protect that investment incredibly well. You can take these through airports, on taxis, in hotels, buses, down cobblestone roads, off curbs, into elevators…the list goes on.

Qualities to Look for in Folding Luggage Carts

Materials and durability.

The quality of the material and durability of your luggage cart is crucial. There are a number of options to choose from.

Whether you choose a high-quality lightweight plastic composite or a metal like steel or aluminum will depend on a number of things like the maximum amount of weight you may need to carry or the amount of bags or luggage you need to carry at one time.

Do you need the absolute strongest and most heavy-duty cart or do you need something that is lightweight and extremely agile? As you go about looking at all the features of different carts we have found to be the best, consider how much weight you will need to carry. Take that amount and find a cart that is rated a little above that, just to be safe.

As you look at the quality of the material you’ll also want to consider how you’re going to use your new cart. Different carts are designed for different uses. You’ll want one that matches your needs.

Here are a few questions to think about and plan for as you make your purchase.

  • Do you need it to lift and carry heavy amounts for long distances?
  • Do you need it to be more agile as you navigate quickly in and out of people at the airport?
  • Are you going to use it in situations besides travel like around your home or neighborhood?
  • Where will you store your cart?
  • Will you use it primarily indoors or outdoors, on smooth surfaces or rough?

Size/Capacity

Keep in mind what you will be loading on your cart. Most carts will carry a couple of average sized pieces of luggage or small boxes or packages. Do you have other needs? Make sure that the base measurements of your cart will adequately suit what you will be storing inside.

Other Features

Pay attention to other features like wheels, straps, locking mechanisms, and clips that need to be used as you fold and unfold your folding luggage cart.

One important thing to consider with wheels is their size. The a bit larger the wheel, the smoother it pulls over rough terrain, up curbs, and over cracks in the sidewalk. Will you want hard wheels that might require a little less maintenance but will be harder to maneuver? Will you want a softer wheel that absorbs the shock more? Shock-absorbing wheels, at times, can be a little more to maintain or can wear down faster. Some of these wheels are filled with air or foam or wrapped in soft rubber.

Some folding luggage cart straps are elastic and made of a bungee cord-like material that can be very convenient to ensure everything stays on the cart. This could be adequate if all you will ever do is stack two or three pieces of luggage on a cart.

Other straps will be not elastic and we’ll cinch down and lock them in place. This can be helpful when putting several or more cumbersome items on your folding cart. They can help immensely at keeping your baggage load secure as you weave in and out or turn corners while traveling through airports.

How much weight can a travel luggage cart carry?

It is possible to carry 80 pounds or more on a compact travel luggage cart. Carts vary in size and material, as some can only hold one bag, while others can hold more. It also depends on the weight capacity and size of your travel bags or suitcases.

Can you carry a travel luggage cart with you?

Yes there are some travel luggage carts that are surprisingly easy to take with you nearly anywhere. You can carry, easily store, and assemble compact, foldable travel luggage carts anywhere. Almost any storage space will accommodate these small-sized, easy storage carts, regardless of the vehicle.

Can I take a folding cart on a plane as a carry-on?

Even folded up, some of them seem too long for overhead bins. Most aren’t too big and will fit just fine. Mine were always checked on board back when rolling bags weren’t available, so we checked ours with our luggage.

How much weight can a luggage cart carry?

You can carry 80 pounds or more with a compact travel luggage cart. Some carts have only one space for each bag, while others can hold more, depending on folded dimensions of the material and size of the cart base.

Are foldable luggage carts allowed in airports?

Yes, foldable luggage carts are allowed in airports. Most strollers or folding wagons must be checked at the gate before boarding, but most of the folding carts in this article can even be carried with you onto the plane.

It’s also possible to use them in airports. It is not possible to check large strollers or non-folding wagons at the gate because they are not collapsible. Make sure yours is foldable, like any of the ones highlighted in this article if you wish to bring them on the plane with you.

Best folding luggage cart/trolley

I love using folding carts in the airport for several reasons

Folding carts are really convenient and will save you time by making it so easy to carry multiple pieces of luggage and simplify the airport experience so much.

they also reduce strain and fatigue on your trip. Carrying multiple heavy bags can be physically demanding and can cause strain on the back, arms, and legs. A folding cart makes it so easy to roll your bags and reduces the weight and strain on your body.

Additional tips when buying a folding cart or luggage trolley (as my wife would say)

  • Check for portability: Look for a cart that is easy to carry and store, especially if you plan to travel frequently.
  • Consider a cart with a compact design, a lightweight frame, and a carrying case or strap.
  • Tip – Consider your packing style and the size of your bags to make sure the cart can handle the load.
  • Look for durability: A folding cart that is made from high-quality materials is more likely to withstand the wear and tear of travel. Consider a cart made from steel or aluminum or one with a reinforced frame.
  • Tip – Consider wheels that are smooth-rolling, swivel-friendly, and puncture-resistant.
  • Evaluate the handle: A comfortable handle is important for ease of use, especially if you’re traveling for long periods. Consider a handle that is adjustable to different heights or one with a sturdy but soft grip. Most these days have them, but if you’re ordering one that I haven’t recommended, double check that.
  • Look for additional features: Some folding carts come with additional features, such as an umbrella holder, a beverage holder, storage bags or bungee cords to secure items during transport. Consider whether these accessories would be useful for your needs.
  • Read reviews: Before making a purchase, read online reviews from other travelers to see how well the cart has worked for them. This can provide valuable insight into the cart’s durability, maneuverability, and overall quality. That’s why I typically refer readers out to amazon.com because they make it easy to see what others have said and questions that have asked and answered about products.
  • Consider terrain: If you plan on using the cart on rough or uneven terrain, make sure it has sturdy wheels and can handle the terrain type.

One of the best gifts for people who travel

If you’re looking for the perfect gift for someone who loves to travel, a folding luggage cart is a great option.

Their ability to make navigating airports, train stations, and other travel destinations a breeze and easy storage, can save your traveling friend or loved one from the strain of carrying heavy bags. These are a few reasons why a folding luggage cart is an excellent gift for anyone who loves to hit the road.

Whether your loved one is a frequent flyer, a road tripper, or a backpacker, a folding luggage cart is a gift that they’ll appreciate more than thought they would. Just an idea for you.

Top Foldable Luggage Carts Compared

We’ve compared every popular luggage cart in terms of price, weight, size, features, and carrying capacity; we’ve also considered reactions from online reviewers (eliminating the fakes!) and luggage brand reliability as reported by America’s Consumer Reports and European consumer organizations .

While for travel purposes we tend to prefer both large or  carry-on  wheeled travel packs, there are times when a good luggage cart is the right choice for some people. If you’re travelling in a small group and especially with kids, it can be useful to be able to combine luggage pieces onto a single cart. And if you have a lovely-but-wheel-less luggage piece that you’re attached to, and you want to be able to roll it, luggage carts are of course the way to go.

Top Pick in a Nutshell: Samsonite Luggage Compact Folding Cart

For a luggage cart that can carry a reasonable load, folds up compactly, and doesn’t weigh too much itself, we prefer the Samsonite Luggage Compact Folding Cart . It currently has the best available combination of these characteristics, and the Samsonite brand is well established and its luggage products do well with consumer tests.

Our Top Pick for Compact Luggage Cart

Samsonite Luggage Compact Cart

As usual, we looked for every scrap of information out there on the most popular carts out there (full listing and specks charted at the bottom of this post) to come to our determination. But luggage carts are not the objects of travel bloggers’ eyes, nor do they get much attention from the consumer testing organizations whose insights we pull together for our meta-reviews. Luggage carts are generally fiddly things and are sold cheaply and without warranties. If you want something that will really last and hold up, check out our recommendations for more  durable luggage options with wheels .

Nevertheless we feel confident in recommending the Samsonite Luggage Compact Folding Cart as the best option out there right now. After eliminating the carts with mostly poor or fake reviews, we compared compactness versus how much weight they can carry. For example, the Travel Smart by Conair Super Mini Cart is cute and very portable, but with a maximum carrying capacity of only 20 pounds is inappropriate for most real-world travel applications.

The Samsonite Compact is the folding cart that hits a happy medium of sturdiness and light weight with its combination stainless steel and plastic construction. It telescopes down to just 10.5 by 15.5 inches (26.7 by 39.4 cm) making it definitely small enough to slide into standard carry-ons, and it weighs just 2.8 pounds (1.27 kg). The 15.5 inch (39.4 cm) base and adjustable support strap anchors help keep its load firmly in place and discourage rocking or tipping when you’re pulling a larger or more awkward piece of luggage.

travel with luggage cart

It’s also quite worth noting that Samsonite as a brand generally does well with consumer organizations’ testing and surveys on luggage brands, including America’s Consumer Reports , France’s Que Choisir and the UK’s Which? .

The Samsonite Compact is priced similarly to its competitors; you can check the latest on Amazon . As of this writing it is (oddly) not available directly from Samsonite .

Larger, Sturdier (and Bulkier) Luggage Carts

The mid-sized samsonite luggage cart.

Samsonite Luggage Cart

If you’re willing to carry just a bit more weight and bulk, the standard Samsonite Luggage Cart is a great choice. Its platform is a bit larger, which gives it more stability in order to prevent tipping if you’re moving fast with an unwieldy load.

Otherwise it’s quite similar in design to its compact sister above. It folds down just a bit less compactly to 19 by 11 by 3 inches (48.3 by 27.9 by 7.6 cm) and weighs 3 pounds (1.36 kg).

We recommend purchasing the larger  Samsonite Luggage Cart directly from Samsonite   via that link because the item listing on Amazon appears to be getting complaints from customers who mistakenly are sent the Compact version when ordering.

The Large, Sturdy Magna Cart Personal Hand Truck

Magna Cart

The next step up is the Magna Cart , which is quite popular worldwide and has lots of glowing (real) customer reviews. It has a carrying capacity of 150 lbs/68 kg (more than twice that of the Samsonite Folding Cart), solid aluminum construction, and 5-inch (12.7 cm) rubberized wheels.

At 7 pounds and folded dimensions of 25 by 15 by 2.5 inches (63.5 by 38.1 by 6.4 cm) this is overkill for most people for airplane luggage. But if you’re travelling over land and need to be ready to haul bigger items without breaking your back, this is useful to have at your side and to be able to fold up when no longer needed.

It doesn’t come with bungee cords so you may want to purchase those separately if you don’t have any.

A Side-By-Side Comparison of All Major Luggage Carts

Wrap-up: the top luggage carts.

There’s lots of carts and hand trucks out there at all price ranges and for all uses; these are the ones that we feel are most likely to benefit travellers with luggage to schlep around.

Not only does this luggage cart come with an unexpectedly low price tag, but it’s also jam-packed full of features that we love. The combination of plastic and stainless steel construction has done a great job of providing enough strength to carry 70-lb loads while keeping the weight of the overall cart at just 3 lbs.

What’s more, the Samsonite Folding Luggage Cart folds down super small, so you can slide it in your carry-on at the airport, and the folding mechanism itself is super easy. If you want a way to make moving your goods around easier, but you reeeeally don’t want to splash the cash, then you won’t find much better than the Travel Smart Folding Cart .

This cart features a sleek design, yet it’s super durable too thanks to the all-steel (and no plastic) construction. While the steel can support loads of 75lbs, it’s lightweight steel that has kept the overall weight of the cart at just over 3 lbs.

We love that you can raise the edges of the base plate to support your gear (or point downwards to keep the luggage cart standing), and, as if it wasn’t great blue for money anyway, it even comes with a  bungee cord included.

Unlike some other models, the handle isn’t telescoping, so you’re limited to just one height when in use. However, for an absolute bargain, you’re getting a super durable, stable, and portable luggage cart that exceeds expectations at this price point.

  • Sleek yet super durable design
  • Only one height option

Magna Cart Personal Hand Truck

Magna Cart Personal 150 Pound Capacity Aluminum Folding Hand Truck with Telescopic Handle and Foldable Wheels for Industrial, Black and Red

Okay, next up we have the Magna Cart Personal Hand Truck .

Despite its sleek appearance, this cart can handle luggage weighing up to 150 lbs thanks to its chunky 5-inch rubber wheels and durable corrosion-resistant aluminum construction. Plus, the wheels fold in and out helping to keep the cart nice and compact when folded away.

We also love the telescoping handle that extends to a mighty 39 inches tall, so you can pull your luggage without hunching over, yet the whole thing can be packed down to a bundle less than three inches wide for easy transport and storage.

As much as we like the durable nature of this compact folding cart, it has added to the weight slightly – at 7 lbs, this is actually the heaviest cart on our list. It doesn’t come with a bungee cord either, so you’ll have to pick one of those up separately.

However, if you’re after a compact luggage cart that can handle heavy loads and is built to last, yet packs away to a surprisingly small size, then this is an awesome option.

  • 5-inch folding rubber wheels
  • Large capacity
  • Tall, telescopic handle
  • Durable aluminum construction
  • Folds into a very compact package
  • Doesn't come with bungee straps included
  • Slightly heavy
  • Capacity: 150 lbs
  • Dimensions: 39 x 15 x 2.5 inches
  • Folded dimensions: 25 x 15 x 2.5 inches
  • Weight: 7 lbs
  • Materials: Aluminum, rubber wheels

Coocheer Folding Hand Truck

The Coocheer Folding Hand Truck is another great option for anyone wanting portability without a ridiculous price tag.

The plastic and metal construction has helped to keep the weight of this luggage cart down (3.5 lbs), yet it can carry loads of up to 88 lbs, which is far heavier than your average affordable option.

The telescoping handle gives you three height options, making this a great option for the whole family, and it also packs down small enough to slip into your carry-on luggage at the airport. Plus, we love that the wheels are designed to glide silently across the floor, so you won’t have to squeak your way around., and it comes with a bungee cord too.

Our main complaint is that the base could be a little broad for added stability, but overall, this is a great product.

  • Good capacity for price range
  • Light and small enough to pack in carry-on luggage
  • Telescoping handle gives three height options
  • Quiet wheels
  • Base could be a little broader to increase stability
  • Capacity: 88 lbs
  • Dimensions: 11 x 3.94 x 19.5 inches or 11 x 3.94 x 27 inches
  • Folded dimensions: 11 x 3.94 x 16.1 inches

  • Wheel size: 3.5 inches

If you’re after a rugged hand cart that will make your life a lot easier, then the ROYI Folding Hand Truck could be the one for you.

With a capacity of 155 lbs, this is one of the strongest luggage carts on our list. Not only that, but it also features thick steel construction that can handle some bumps and scrapes.

On top of that, we love the telescoping handle with its three height options (the tallest of which is just under 40 inches), and the corrugated wheels that make this carry suitable for outdoor use (although it’s not so great on slopes).

Finally, it comes with a bungee cord AND a carry bag included – so you can pp it on your back when not in use. It’s slightly heavier than some other models, but its durability is the name of the game, then it’s worth those extra pounds.

  • Weight: 4 lbs

Orange Tech Hand Truck

Orange Tech Folding Hand Truck, 220 lbs Heavy Duty Luggage Cart, 4 Wheels Solid Construction, Portable Fold Up Dolly, Compact and Lightweight for Luggage, Personal, Travel, Moving and Office Use

The Orange Tech Folding Hand Truck is another popular foldable luggage cart, and it’s easy to see why.

It has a large capacity of 155 lbs, and we love that the base features extra steel bars to help provide added stability – and it even extends out to provide an extra-large platform for bigger goods, pretty neat huh? The all-steel construction makes this one durable cart, although it has ramped up the weight.

The telescoping handle gives you three height choices (but make sure that it’s fully clicked into place when you make adjustments), and the shockproof wheels are grippy and silent too. It even comes with a bungee strap and carry bag included too – what a winner!

  • Extendable reinforced base for large and heavy loads
  • Telescoping handle with three height options
  • Shockproof, grippy, silent wheels
  • Extendable handle sometimes a little fiddly
  • Dimensions:
  • Folded dimensions: 17.7 x 12.2 inches
  • Weight: 6.2 lbs
  • Materials: Stainless steel

BlueJan Luggage Cart

BlueJan Luggage Cart

Last, but by no means least, we have the BlueJan Luggage Cart .

The BlueJan luggage cart is lightweight, folds down super small, and comes with a bungee cord included.

The plastic construction makes it slightly less durable than other models (the handle doesn’t feel super strong) and it limits then weight capacity to 77 lbs. The base is also smaller than some models, so you might have trouble with bulkier loads.

However, if you want something simple and lightweight for those lighter loads, then you’ll find carrying your compact luggage a breeze with this cart.

  • Telescopic handle with three height options
  • bungee cord included
  • Lightweight and compact
  • All-plastic construction reduces strength
  • Handle could be sturdier
  • Small base could be problematic with bulky items
  • Capacity: 77 lbs
  • Folded dimensions: 3.15 x 9.05 x 17.7 inches
  • Weight: 2.9 lbs
  • Materials: Plastic

What To Look For In Folding Luggage Cart

There you have it – the top folding luggage carts on the market. But what are the main things you should look out for when you’re shopping around?

Most importantly, your cart needs to be able to handle your load. If you just want a cart to help you take the groceries home, then a capacity of 50-70 lbs is most likely plenty, but if you want a cart to help you whizz around airports with heavy bags, then you might want to think about upgrading.

Portability

If you want a cart you can pop in your carry-on after you’ve passed through airport security, then check out the folded dimensions to make sure that your cart will fit in your carry-on bag. If you’ll be using your luggage cart at the local store, then dimensions might not be so important, but the weight might be – how will you carry it there? Some luggage carts even come with carry bags included, giving you more options when it comes to portability.

If you want a cart for heavy loads and heavy use then you’re best off with an aluminum or steel cart with minimal plastic. This will, however, add to the overall weight (and probably price) of the cart. If you’re happy with lighter loads and will use your cart causal, you can save some weight and dollars by going for a blend of metal and plastic construction.

Best luggage carts

travel with luggage cart

Which luggage cart is best?

If you’ve lugged bags through an airport before, chances are that you wished you had a luggage cart to make the journey easier. Whether you’re a frequent flyer or just need to fly across the country for Thanksgiving, an investment in a luggage cart is quite literally a weight off your shoulders. Even if you don’t travel, if you have to carry gear to the office daily or move often, a luggage cart is a useful tool to have.

No matter what your reason is for needing a luggage cart, the Samsonite Compact Folding Luggage Cart has got you covered, featuring strong wheels and a bungee cord for added security.

What to know before you buy a luggage cart

How much do you plan to carry? How much space can your luggage cart take up? If you only travel through airports, you probably want a cart that will pack down small but doesn’t carry heavy loads. If you move more often, you’ll want to maximize the carrying weight, but you may not need an ultra-compact, foldable luggage cart.

Frequent flyers will want a trusted luggage cart. If you only bring it out of the garage every five years, you won’t necessarily put the mileage on it to concern yourself with long-term durability. If you need to rely on your cart often, make sure it’s made of durable materials and has solid wheel bearings that won’t give out easily.

Depending on how strong you are and how heavy your cart is, you may not want to drag a luggage cart with a 200-pound capacity. If this isn’t an issue for you, pick any luggage cart you want. However, a high-quality luggage cart will have a good balance of weight and weight capacity.

What to look for in a quality luggage cart

There’s no worse scenario than running late for your flight and realizing your suitcase is giving up on you. If you plan to do any significant traveling, opt for a more expensive luggage cart option that gives you peace of mind and a good set of wheels. No matter how good your wheels are, you want to make sure to clean and oil them at least on occasion.

Compact structure

The smaller your luggage cart can break down, the more options you will have. Again, while this matters more for flyers than movers, a compact folding luggage cart is easy to store on all occasions. If your airline allows you to carry on your luggage cart, a compact cart that can fit in an overhead bin is essential.

While most users may not need to concern themselves with this, users who are taller than average may want to consider the maximum handle height. Taller users may want a handle that extends to somewhere around 36 inches.

How much you can expect to spend on a luggage cart

Most users will be satisfied with luggage carts costing between $25-$75.

Luggage cart FAQ

Can i take my luggage cart on an airplane.

A . This mainly depends on the airline. Some allow it, some require it to be checked. If you fly with one airline exclusively, you may want to base your luggage cart purchase on their specific parameters. If you fly multiple airlines, know that you may have to deal with different sets of requirements.

How do I keep the wheels of my luggage cart in good condition?

A. You want to use a cotton rag or cloth to wipe down the bearings at least occasionally. Oiling your wheels with an oil, like sewing machine oil, can help keep them in good condition as well. It will be easier to keep wheels in good condition if used at least semi-often. For users who rarely need their luggage cart, keeping up with a cleaning and maintenance schedule will prevent wheels from premature deterioration and locking up.

ROYI Folding Hand Truck

What you need to know: If you travel heavily or move often, you want to upgrade from a basic luggage cart to a heavy-duty hand truck.

What you’ll love: With a claimed max capacity of 155 pounds, this will take every bag that you can travel with. Though it has heavy-duty aluminum bars and four wheels, this hand truck only weighs five pounds.

What you should consider: If you travel often or travel light, this is probably more than you need. Some users found the max capacity claims to be a bit high.

If you feel like you’re constantly corralling runaway bags when you travel, consider this a sign to check out options to masterfully manage multiple pieces of luggage while barely lifting a finger. What if we told you you could carry thrice as many bags as you have hands — without burdening your shoulders or back?

We’ve done a hefty amount of research and stretched our creative problem-solving muscles to find the best items that’ll help you carry more luggage with less effort. We’ve made the list, checked it twice, and come up with eight solutions to level up your travel style, from connectable luggage sets to simple attachable hooks. Whether you’re headed out with the fam, or are on team overpacker every day, these picks will help you carry multiple suitcases like an absolute pro.

Best Connectable Luggage

Tach 3-piece hardcase connectable luggage.

This luggage set has a patented design for flawlessly connecting multiple luggage pieces.

Some travelers may find the built-in packing-cube pockets to be limiting.

If you’re concerned about fiddling with straps and clips, consider this 3-piece nesting luggage set with patented connectivity capabilities that easily connect up to six suitcases at once. The durable hardside set includes a 20-inch carry-on, a 24-inch checked suitcase, and a 28-inch checked bag that can be used solo or connected together. These bags also go beyond standard features like double spinner wheels and TSA-approved locks by also offering built-in charging ports and a water bottle hook. Use the telescopic handle to glide from gate to gate or attach the included baggage strap to pull your load of connected luggage. Luggage connects via built-in fasteners on the sides and it only takes seconds to snap them together. While this luggage set is game-changing for large families and overpackers, we’re not huge fans of the built-in packing cube organizers. We’d rather have the flexibility to sort the interior organization on our own. Still, the price is right and the convenience of hassle-free connectability is unmatched.

Best Luggage with Built-in Strap

Béis large check-in roller.

There’s a built-in feature that signals if your bag is overweight.

The retractable luggage strap has a 15-pound weight limit.

Béis The 29-inch Large Check-in Roller is a smartly stylish suitcase with a tough polycarbonate shell that excelled in our luggage tests . We appreciate how good this bag looks rolling beside us (in any of the 11 available colors), plus its added features like a TSA-approved double lock, smooth spinner wheels, two expandable inches of extra space, and a built-in weight indicator that turns red if the bag is over 50 pounds (the usual airline checked bag weight limit).

However where this bag also sets itself apart is the handy retractable strap so another bag (up to 15 pounds) can be attached to the back. This ready-when-you-need-it, built-in feature is nothing new for Béis so you can also find it on a number of the brand’s suitcases, including The Carry-on Roller . No matter what size works best for you, this means your Beis luggage can carry a luggage-sleeve-equipped bag slipped over the telescopic handle and a second one looped onto the back, sparing your back and gifting you one empty hand.

Best Clip Strap

Monochef add a bag luggage strap set.

The two straps can be clipped together to make one large strap that can be used for larger pieces of luggage.

You’ll need to balance the weight of your bags to keep everything from tipping over.

If you only plan on occasionally traveling with multiple wheeled bags (or even just once), it is worth giving this Monochef Add a Bag Luggage Strap Set a look. It’s literally just two 1.5-inch straps that can easily be tossed into a box or the back of the closet when not in use. Each strap is adjustable with a maximum length of 22.4 inches, and you can even clip the straps together if you need more length for larger luggage. This strap connector works by threading the strap through the top luggage handles on suitcases (or the shoulder straps or grab handles of a carry-on bag) to create a loop for the second bag to hang down from. In terms of strap material, it’s like a thicker version of an adjustable backpack strap, and the plastic clip has a quick and easy pinch-and-release buckle. Each strap can hold up to 220 pounds of tension when fastened. Just be sure to keep an eye on the weight of the attached bag — if it’s more than the anchor bag, it’ll likely topple.

Best Bungee Strap

Guanjunx add a bag elastic strap belt.

The stretchy figure-eight design loops around your bag, so you don’t have to mess with clips or hooks.

Your suitcase handle will need to be at least 12 inches long to keep the strap from slipping off.

We don’t know about you, but we hate hauling around a bag while traveling — especially if we’re in a rush or if it’s a little weighty. Instead, we’d rather attach our backpack, purse, duffel, or tote to our wheeled luggage whenever possible — and the Guanjunx Add a Bag Elastic Strap Belt makes it a breeze to do so. This infinity-shaped luggage belt is perfect for getting a lumpy load off your shoulder or back and securing it to the top of your suitcase — no hooks or clips to struggle with — and it’s easier to use than a trolley sleeve. All you have to do is thread one end of the belt over your suitcase handle, stack your bag on top, wrap the belt around the front of the bag, and loop the other end over the suitcase handle. The X-shape of the belt works to provide extra security while holding your loose bag on top of your suitcase against the handle. That said, it won’t work if your luggage handle is shorter than 12 inches when fully extended.

Best Portable Luggage Cart

Mount it folding luggage cart with wheels.

It folds up to store easily and also works as a moving dolly.

The weight limit maxes out at 77 pounds, so you’ll need a good estimate of what your luggage weighs.

Is anyone else annoyed that most airports charge to use luggage carts? With the Mount It! Folding Luggage Cart with Wheels, you can BYOLC (bring your own luggage cart). This portable option is lightweight at just four pounds but can hold up to 77 pounds. (You’ll have to do a little math to know if you’re within the weight limits.) The compact folding design means you won’t have to clear out a bunch of space to store it when it’s not in use — just fold it up, bungee it together with the included bungee cord, and slip it into any 18 x 9 storage space, or even store inside your carry-on bag or car trunk until you need to use it. The steel handle adjusts to three heights (15.25 to 37.75 inches), and the two rubber traction wheels make rolling it over carpet or uneven surfaces a cinch. We also love that it can be placed inside your larger suitcase before checking it, attached to your carry-on to bring in the cabin (depending on that suitcase’s size), or stashed under the seat instead.

Best Belt Bag Strap

Cincha travel belt bag.

Cincha

It’s a multifunctional travel accessory that has a use beyond just securing a bag to your luggage.

The bag is not removable or adjustable.

We’re big fans of products that have more than one use — so, might as well get the ultimate bang for your buck, right? We already love that the original Cincha Travel Belt lets us easily strap our shoulder bag or purse to our wheeled luggage handle, but the Travel Belt Bag adds the versatility and function of an easy-access utility bag to this belt. It can face either direction when used as a luggage connector and can also be worn as a cute crossbody bag once you’re off the plane (so that’s one less thing to pack). No matter how you carry it the most, the interior organization and convenient exterior zippered pouch make it ideal when we want hands-free access to our essentials on travel days, or when we don’t want to be tethered down by a shoulder bag or backpack. It also comes in six different colors, including rotating seasonal shades. Some things to note, however, are that the positioning of the bag on the strap isn’t adjustable, and you can’t remove the bag from the belt.

Best Connectible Backpack

Osprey fairview 55l travel pack.

It is two backpacks in one, making this a great option for camping treks, or for hikes at your final destination.

Only the smaller, detachable bag will fit under the seat on most aircraft, so you’ll have to count the main bag as your carry-on.

We love a great backpack, especially when it is made from tough, recycled materials that pack down for easy storage. The Osprey Daylite Fairview 55 Travel Pack features a breathable back panel and cushioned straps, but on two separate bags. There’s a larger one (that serves as a carry-on) and a detachable smaller one to use as a personal item, and then as a daypack at your destination. That leaves both hands free for wheeled checked bags as you go. The main, 40-liter bag opens up with a top flap like a suitcase for easy packing, plus there's a handle on the side so you can carry both together briefcase-style, if preferred, or you can carry the 15-liter lockable daypack on your front with the backpack on your back instead. There’s also a similar set — the Farpoint 55 Travel Pack — available for men, too.

Best Hook Strap

Vigorport luggage hook strap.

This hook strap is compatible with nearly any piece of upright luggage.

You’ll have to keep weight balance and personal-item height in mind.

Looking to go hands-free with your laptop bag, tote, or purse while traveling between point A and point B? The Vigaopott Luggage Hook is a quick and simple solution that will keep smaller bags off your back and shoulders by giving them a spot to hang on the side of your wheeled luggage. Just thread the hook strap through your luggage’s grab handle, secure the strap with a quick buckle clip, and then use the built-in coated metal J-hook to hang your personal item. We particularly like this luggage hook because of the Velcro strap that secures the open side of the J-hook to prevent accidental slippage, and because it will work with practically any piece of upright luggage.  However, you’ll want to make sure the item you are hanging doesn’t cause the suitcase to tip forward, and that there’s enough length available to avoid dragging.

Tips for Traveling With Multiple Suitcases

Consider the size and weight of each bag.

Traveling with a lot of luggage is a balancing act, even beyond just physically working out how to carry everything with your own two hands. You’ll want to take stock of all pieces you intend to bring with you; how much they can hold; how much space they’ll take up (notably what you can bring on board versus what you’ll need to check); and how much the bags weigh once they’re fully packed. We recommend finding the lightest, sturdiest luggage so that it’s easier to carry and move, tough against transport bangs, and can hold more of your items safely.

Know how many bags you can bring on board

Baggage limits and restrictions vary by airline, routing, and fare class. The general rules are that you can carry on up to two bags — one personal item to fit under the seat and one piece of luggage that fits within the size requirements for the overhead bin. Checked luggage usually maxes out at two bags; you may be able to check additional pieces for larger, additional fees, but some airlines limit the overall number of bags per traveler. Know your airline’s rules before packing and showing up at the airport.

Things to Look for in the Best Luggage Carts

Luggage carts are available in many designs, styles, and setups. Some have a fold-able mechanism that allows you to collapse the cart to store it in a small space. Folding luggage carts are useful if you are using them to travel or carrying them in your car, van, or other vehicles. However, you won’t have much use for the folding luggage carts if you will just be using the cart to move your goods from one room to another or across a building compound.

Another part of the design to consider would be the carrying base. The base plate of the cart will be used to hold your luggage or other items. It is usually made using a thick, durable material such as steel. One important factor to consider is the size of the base plate. You should go for luggage carts with wider base plates if you will be using them to carry big boxes and other large weights.  Many base plates have an expandable function which lets you increase and decrease the size as you require. If you have planned to use the luggage carts for transporting smaller items such as tools, gears, and groceries, you will find a luggage cart with a smaller base plate to be more appropriate and useful for you.

Luggage carts also include additional features such as a bungee cord and trolley bags to provide better security for your luggage. The bungee cords can be used to tie up the baggage to the cart and prevent them from slipping or sliding while in transit. Trolley bags come with multiple compartments and pockets that come in handy if you want to separate and organize your items.

The storage capacity of your luggage cart will determine the amount of baggage it will carry without falling apart. Some luggage carts have a smaller capacity such as up to 80lbs. Some carts let you carry heavy luggage up to 300lbs or more. You should go for luggage with a higher weight capacity if you intend to move a lot of heavy baggage. If not, you can save a few bucks by sticking to luggage carts with smaller storage capacity.

The wheels are one of the most important parts of luggage carts since you will be using them to move your luggage from one place to another. Some luggage carts make use of rubber wheels while others have solid wheels. Rubber wheels are durable and long-lasting. With solid wheels, on the other hand, you won’t be facing puncture issues similar to a flat tire. Luggage carts generally have four wheels, while some may include more wheels like six or seven. Some wheels have 360-degree rotation and multi-directional features that make it easier for you to transport the cart.

The quality of the handle of your luggage carts will ensure that it is capable of pulling or pushing the load of the cart without breaking apart. Handles in luggage carts are generally made from durable and lightweight materials such as aluminum.

Some luggage carts have a fixed handle while others implement an extendable handle design that lets you adjust the height based on your preferences. You can pull up the handle to expand it, or as is the case in some luggage carts, push on the button to release the lock in the handle.

The design of the handle will determine how comfortable it is to hold for the customer. Some luggage carts feature handles with ergonomic designs that ensure they don’t cut into your hands while you are using the luggage carts. Some include padded material on the handle to provide better comfort and grip.

Other features

Luggage carts also include special features such as a braking system or additional wheels. A braking system comes in handy if you use the luggage carts on uneven roads or slopey grounds. The brakes will keep your cart stable and in place if you decide to stop and take a break for other tasks while transporting the luggage on foot.

Choose the Luggage Cart For Your Needs Carefully!

The best luggage carts will let you carry all your luggage, parcels, and other heavy items with ease from one location to another. They should have rugged wheels and folding functions so that you can store them properly when they are not in use. We have this guide here that will help you in the task of selecting the best luggage carts in the market.

Traveling with weed carts can be a source of confusion for many cannabis users. With the increasing popularity of cannabis products, it's important to understand the regulations surrounding these items, especially when it comes to air travel. If you're planning on flying with weed carts, here are some important things to keep in mind regarding traveling with these products in checked luggage.

First and foremost, it's crucial to note that traveling with weed carts is illegal if you are crossing state or international borders. Cannabis laws vary from one location to another, so even if you're flying from one state where cannabis is legal to another, it's essential to check the laws in both your departure and destination locations to avoid any legal issues.

Assuming that you are flying within a state where cannabis is legal and you plan to travel with weed carts in your checked luggage, it's important to follow certain guidelines to ensure compliance with regulations. Typically, airports have strict security measures in place, and it's crucial to abide by their rules to avoid any unwanted attention or legal consequences.

Before packing your weed carts, it's recommended that you research the specific airline you are flying with. Some airlines might have additional regulations regarding cannabis products, and it's better to be aware of these rules in advance. You can usually find this information in the airline's website or by contacting their customer support.

To minimize any potential issues, it's best to pack your weed carts in a discreet and odorless manner. Make sure the cartridges are securely closed and placed in a smell-proof container to prevent any odors from escaping. Additionally, it's a good idea to pack the cartridges with other items that are legal and non-suspicious to avoid drawing unnecessary attention.

When it comes to the quantity of weed carts you can carry, it's important to adhere to the legal limits set by your departure and destination locations. If you exceed these limits, you may face legal consequences, even if cannabis is legal in both locations. It's always a good idea to keep your quantity within the legal limits to avoid any problems.

Remember that TSA agents are primarily looking for threats to the safety of the aircraft and its passengers, rather than cannabis products. However, if your weed carts are discovered during security checks, TSA agents are required to report them to local law enforcement. Whether or not you will face legal consequences ultimately depends on the laws in your departure and destination locations.

To summarize, while it may be possible to travel with weed carts in checked luggage within state lines where cannabis is legal, it's important to familiarize yourself with the specific laws and regulations of both your departure and destination locations. Following the guidelines provided, such as discreet packaging and staying within legal limits, can help minimize any potential issues. However, it's always best to exercise caution and consider alternative options, such as consuming or purchasing cannabis products at your destination, to ensure a hassle-free travel experience.

As marijuana laws continue to evolve and more states legalize the recreational or medicinal use of cannabis, traveling with weed carts has become a common concern for many people. While it is crucial to understand and follow the regulations in both your departure and destination locations, it is possible to travel with weed carts in checked luggage safely and legally. Here are some important tips to keep in mind:

  • Research the Laws: Before traveling, it is essential to thoroughly research the laws and regulations of both your departure and destination locations. While some states allow the recreational or medicinal use of cannabis, others may have more strict laws or even consider it illegal. Make sure you are fully aware of the regulations to avoid any legal issues.
  • Follow TSA Guidelines: Transportation Security Administration (TSA) guidelines clearly state that cannabis, including weed carts, is illegal under federal law. However, TSA focuses on security threats such as explosives and weapons rather than marijuana. As a result, if TSA agents discover weed carts during screening, they may refer the case to local law enforcement. It's important to note that some airports located in states where cannabis is legal may have additional local regulations.
  • Use Discreet Packaging: To minimize the risk of detection, it is essential to use discreet packaging for your weed carts. Avoid using packaging that explicitly states the product's content or resembles cannabis branding. Instead, opt for inconspicuous packaging that does not draw unwanted attention.
  • Empty the Cartridges: To further reduce the risk of detection, it is advisable to empty the cartridges before traveling. This means removing the liquid or oil from the cartridges and placing them in a separate container. Remember to securely close the containers to prevent leakage and pack them alongside your empty cartridges.
  • Pack in Checked Luggage: It is crucial to pack your weed carts in your checked luggage rather than your carry-on. This ensures that if TSA agents identify the carts, they will be less likely to cause immediate concern or disruption. Keeping them in checked luggage also reduces the chances of drawing attention from fellow passengers during security checks.
  • Research Your Destination: Just as you should be familiar with the regulations at your departure location, it is equally important to know the laws at your destination. Ensure that cannabis and weed carts are legal or tolerated in the area you are traveling to. Being ignorant of the destination's regulations could lead to legal consequences upon arrival.
  • Minimize Quantity: Consider traveling with only the necessary quantity of weed carts to minimize the risk and potential legal consequences. Carrying an excessive amount may increase the likelihood of drawing attention and can be viewed as intent to distribute, which can lead to serious legal repercussions.
  • Know the Risks: Despite following all the guidelines and regulations, it's important to acknowledge that traveling with weed carts still carries some risk. The laws may change, and enforcement can differ from one location to another. Being well-informed and prepared is the key to ensuring safe travel.

Remember, the information provided here is not legal advice, and it is crucial to consult with legal professionals or local authorities to fully understand the laws and regulations surrounding cannabis and traveling. Always prioritize safety and compliance to avoid any legal consequences or disruptions during your journey.

Understanding the Travel Visa Requirements for Australia

Traveling with weed cartridges, whether in checked luggage or carry-on, can have potential risks and consequences. While laws regarding the sale and possession of cannabis products may vary from state to state and country to country, it is important to be aware of the potential legal and safety implications associated with carrying weed carts during travel.

One of the first things to consider is the legality of cannabis in the region you are traveling to. Even if cannabis is legal in your departure location, it may not be legal in your destination. International travel with cannabis products is especially risky, as many countries have strict laws prohibiting the possession or use of cannabis.

If you are caught with weed carts in your checked luggage at a security checkpoint, you may face legal consequences. This can include confiscation of the product, fines, or even arrest, depending on the jurisdiction. It is also important to note that airport security protocols are continually evolving, and screening methods are becoming more advanced. While it is still possible to slip through security undetected, the risk of being caught is always present.

In addition to legal risks, there are safety concerns associated with traveling with weed carts in checked luggage. These cartridges typically contain a concentrated form of THC, the psychoactive compound found in cannabis. If the cartridge were to leak or break during transit, it could pose a safety hazard. Not only could it ruin your belongings, but it may also lead to potential health risks for those handling your luggage.

Furthermore, airlines and transportation authorities often have their own policies regarding the transportation of cannabis products. Even if you are traveling within a region where cannabis is legal, airlines may explicitly prohibit the transport of these products. For example, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United States prohibits the transportation of cannabis, including weed carts, on aircraft.

To avoid the potential risks and consequences of traveling with weed carts in checked luggage, it is best to leave them behind. Instead, consider consuming your cannabis products before you travel or purchasing them legally at your destination if it is permissible.

If you still wish to travel with cannabis products, it is essential to research the laws and regulations in both your departure and arrival locations explicitly. This includes understanding the legal limits for possession and any requirements for medical documentation, if applicable. It is also advisable to consult with an attorney familiar with cannabis laws to ensure compliance and minimize the risks involved.

Overall, traveling with weed carts in checked luggage presents numerous potential risks and consequences. It is crucial to consider the legalities, safety concerns, and airline policies associated with cannabis before making any decisions. Taking these factors into account will help ensure a smoother and more hassle-free travel experience.

Exploring the World: Can I Travel with a Student Visa?

Traveling with weed carts, also known as cartridges filled with THC oil, can be risky and potentially illegal, depending on the destination. While some states and countries have relaxed laws regarding the use of cannabis, many still consider it illegal. Therefore, it is prudent to explore alternative options to avoid any legal complications or hassles during your travels.

Here are some alternatives to consider when it comes to traveling without weed carts in checked luggage:

  • Research local laws: Before embarking on your journey, always research the laws and regulations regarding cannabis use at your destination. It is important to be aware of any legal requirements or restrictions on possession, consumption, and transportation of cannabis products.
  • Buy at your destination: Instead of carrying weed carts with you, consider purchasing them at your destination if legal and convenient. Many states and countries have legalized the sale of cannabis products in licensed dispensaries. This way, you can enjoy your cannabis legally without the risk of legal consequences.
  • Utilize local delivery services: In some locations, you can order cannabis products through legal delivery services. These services are similar to traditional food delivery services and can provide you with a hassle-free way to access cannabis while staying within the bounds of the law.
  • Use alternative consumption methods: If you are unable to access weed carts at your destination, consider alternative consumption methods. Edibles, tinctures, topicals, or dry herb vaporizers are some examples of cannabis products that might be easier to travel with, as they are less conspicuous and easier to explain if questioned.
  • Consider CBD products: If you are simply looking for the therapeutic benefits of cannabis without the psychoactive effects, you may want to consider CBD products. CBD, or cannabidiol, is a non-intoxicating compound found in cannabis that is legal in many places. CBD products can often be purchased legally and carried without the associated risks of THC products.
  • Connect with local communities: Online cannabis communities or forums can be a valuable resource for connecting with like-minded individuals in your destination. These communities can provide valuable information on where to find legal sources of cannabis or even connect you with locals who may be able to share their knowledge or products.

Regardless of the option you choose, it is always a good idea to exercise caution and respect local laws when it comes to traveling with cannabis. Remember that laws and regulations surrounding cannabis can vary greatly from one place to another, and it is your responsibility to stay informed and comply with the laws of your destination. By doing so, you can have a safe and enjoyable trip without risking any legal complications.

Travel Light With These 41 Carry-On Packing Tips

That checked luggage fee can now be earmarked for "vacation gelato" instead.

BuzzFeed Staff

1. Figure out what carry-on suitcase size works for the airline you're going on, because of COURSE there's no standard measurement across them all. Luckily for us, Amazon has an easy guide to make shopping for your suitcase a lot easier — just select by airline!

Amazon's guide to carry-ons, including airlines like air france, hawaiian airlines, delta airlines, jetblue, and more

Navigate by the airline(s) you regularly fly, and Amazon will weed out the options that won't fit into the overhead bins. Now you can really *maximize* your size based on the airlines you fly most often.

2. And pack your purse, and choose your "personal item" carefully — aka the biggest one possible, like a spacious travel-friendly backpack that'll fit under the seat in front of you.

The backpack in black unzipped to show internal pockets and capacity

This one checks all the boxes: super roomy, zips completely open (like a suitcase — so it's easy to find what you need), has plenty of pockets (including one for shoes and a separate wet bag!), and a strap that slides down over your luggage handle for easy transport. And reviewers say it meets even Spirit and JetBlue 's personal item rules and fits under airplane seats!

I've traveled with this suitcase several times (including a few international trips), and it's really roomy and easy to keep organized, and it has comfy straps!

Get it from Amazon for $33.99 + (available in two sizes and 17 colors).

Promising review: " I bought this backpack for work. It's the BEST backpack I've ever used. I needed one with several pockets and not too big or heavy. I found that with this backpack, I can fill it and still have room! There's even a shoe and clothing compartment for traveling! The straps are just wide enough to stay on your shoulders, especially with the snap straps in front. I also love the color, and it's true to the picture color. If you're looking for lightweight with tons of pockets, this is what you need!" — Kelly Miller

Promising review: "This is a perfect size backpack for traveling on a plane as your personal item, especially to international destinations. You could fit rolled-up clothes in here for another week , and it has a very handy shoe bag and tons of places for your electronics. This will be an excellent addition to my carry-on suitcase. Best purchase all year. I consider myself an expert on travel bags. I have way too many. It’s smaller than it looks but so roomy." — AP

3. Psst: keep your in-flight essentials separately in a compact but surprisingly spacious  belt bag  for a bit of extra convenience and space-saving in your carry-on and personal item — and so you don't have to dig through your backpack for your AirPods halfway through the flight. The strap is adjustable, so you can wear it crossbody *or* around your waist, and you'll be surprised how much it holds, too! And....it's quite  similar to Lululemon's belt bag and less than half  the price!

reviewer wearing the fanny pack crossbody

I gave in and bought this last year, and it's my new go-to bag for everything from grocery runs to appointments! And on all my airplane trips, I use it for my in-flight essentials: my Kindle, AirFly Bluetooth adapter, headphones, hand sanitizer, lotion, and lip balm.

BuzzFeed Shopping editor  Elizabeth Lilly  says, "I wear a size L/XL in clothing and sometimes waist bags just don't work out so well for me. With this one, I can confirm that it fits around my waist comfortably without outerwear, across my chest without outerwear, *and* over a thick coat and several layers. The pockets inside are so handy, and I even had room to spare throughout my Iceland trip. Just make sure that you zip the zipper ALL the way because the zipper goes down pretty far on the sides for easier access to contents."

Get it from Amazon for  $13.98  (available in 43 colors).

Promising review : "Got this for air travel. I normally travel with a carry-on and a backpack. Got this to hold my essentials and have them accessible. It’s big enough to hold my phone, wallet, passport, hand sanitizer, and ChapStick." — daisy rojas

4. Create a packing list even before you take a single item out. Whether it's on a handy prefilled notepad or just on the Notes app of your phone, spend some time really thinking about everything you need so you don't panic and try to shove in 25 pairs of extra undies and three sweatshirts at the last minute.

The amount of extra undies I bring on trips...why?!

Get this handy notepad from Amazon for  $7  (available in two colors, plus a road trip–specific list).

Promising review: "I just used this for a recent trip to Florida from California. It made it easier to remember things. I used to have a list, that I made, on my computer to remind me, my husband, and child what to pack. My daughter is out on her own now and my husband passed away recently. So, I just need a list for me. This helped me think of things I NEVER thought to put on my list. It has extra lines for you to add anything extra like crochet project, handicapped parking plaque, etc. It's not too big, but can easily be read. There are boxes to check off as you go and room to add quantity to clothing items. I hope these are ALWAYS available!" — Connie Woods

5. Check average weather in the area you're traveling to ahead of time, so you can decide what to pack. Will you need a light jacket? Just a heavy sweater? Is it usually rainy this time of year? Now you'll be in the know.

Many sites will give you the seasonal average weather for that date and location so you can plan your outfits (or what you might need to buy) before the actual forecast is available closer to your trip. You can also look at *past* years for the same info! I always use this to plan the kind of things I need to bring when I travel...far in advance!

6. If rain is on the meteorological menu, squeeze in a packable raincoat so you can stay securely dry without having to leave your favorite, more fashionable pieces at home. This packs down into a teensy drawstring bag. You can even keep it in your purse while actually on the trip if it might stay dry.

Get this one from Amazon for $31.99 (available in women's sizes XS–3X and 19 colors).

Promising review: "Lightweight, water resistant, perfect for traveling! I bought this to wear in Iceland. It rolls up and goes into a little pouch, which makes it easier to carry. It kept me nice and dry when I was walking the rainy, misty streets of Iceland as well as the many waterfalls I visited. I highly recommend." — Karin M. Dixey

7. Or stash a  mini travel umbrella  that not only is perfectly compact for the minimal space in your carry-on but also comes with a handy carrying case, so you can pop it right in your purse when the showers are (finally!) over without getting the rest of your stuff wet.

A small sage green umbrella in a compact carrying case

It's also made of UPF50 fabric, so it's also great for carrying around your own personal shade when the sun is blazing!

Get it from Amazon for $12.99 (available in 11 colors).

Promising review:  "Perfect for travel. I got this to stick in my backpack or suitcase when I travel. I did not want a bulky umbrella. This fit the bill. Compact but provides enough coverage for rainy days." — Deb

8. Listen to your parents and roll your clothes to save space. It's a tried-and-true method that actually works AND also makes it easier to find individual items — without messing up the whole rest of the suitcase.

9. or try one of these techniques — depending on what you're packing, you might want to switch it up. the "clown car" style helps with reducing wrinkles.

An infographic of different folding methods

The military-style roll is basically like the regular roll, but taken to ~the next level~. "Clown car" is all about ~stacking~ before folding and tucking.

And if you like a classic fold but have a hard time seeing everything in your suitcase, the front-to-back style is a good option. It's also *great* for storing tees in your drawers at home so you can see what's what.

10. Make your clothes more *compact* bit by bit in a set of packing cubes — organize them by day (like pictured above), clothing type, ~segment of your trip~ (like city/beach/weather), etc.! Harness your inner Virgo and get packing.

An array of clothes and shoes before packing

It comes with a laundry bag to separate your dirty clothes on your way back, and the cubes have mesh tops so you can see what's inside!

Get the set of six pictured above from Amazon for $22.99 (available in 21 colors and patterns).

Promising review: "These packing cubes exceeded my expectations!!!! I was able to pack for a seven-day cruise: seven day outfits, seven evening dresses, six swimsuits and six swim cover-ups. Along with 10 pairs of undergarments, four PJ sets, and three bras. It was wild. I highly recommend! I used a Vera Bradley weekend tote to fit my packing cubes and then a separate bag for shoes, toiletries, etc. worked perfectly! Very happy with my purchase." — Elias Zuloaga

11. Or if you're less worried about organization and more worried about having enough space, compress everything into a set of space-saver bags specifically designed for travel. Over-packers? These are for you. No vacuum required; just pop in your stuff and roll to release the pesky extra air through the valves.

Promising review: "These were life savers! We took a 10-day trip to Europe and were able to pack only in a carry-on using these! I used two medium in my carry on and my husband used three in his carry on. I packed all my undergarments, five dresses, four pairs of jeans, multiple blouses, three pairs of shorts, and a few other pieces of clothing. And still has room for my shoes. These will definitely be used each time we travel now. Well worth it." — Amazon Customer

It’s such a great compact size and light weight, it can be squeezed into luggage without taking up much space. It’s a great travel iron…but I know I’ll find amazing uses for it at home. It’s actually nicer than most irons as you can focus on ironing smaller sections at a time…results are crisp and challenging areas in between buttons, etc, as easy to navigate around! Heats up great and provides the right amount of steam." — Get thee to a nunnery

13. Fill otherwise hard-to-utilize space (looking at you, space between the metal bars!) with rolled up undies, bathing suits, or other small pieces of clothing to maximize capacity.

Promising review: "I bought a pack to take along on our UK and Ireland Christmas vacation. We were going to be gone for two weeks and I knew that there would be times where we needed to hand wash items and have them ready the next day. We were able to, throw some essential items into the hotel room sink and hand wash them and hang them to dry. It did pull out dirt and grime and left our clothes with a fresh scent. It’s a smart purchase and I will be sending a pack along with my daughter for her study abroad trip to Peru next month." — Jill Foster

Promising review:  "As a frequent traveler, this bag has been great for packing dirty laundry on the return trip home. It will hold much more than I usually put in it and compresses nicely in the suitcase. I toss it in the washer along with the clothes and it has held up for well over a year now." — CC

19. Stuff small, foldable items inside your hat, then place items carefully around the brim inside your suitcase to keep it from getting crushed or bent. Because carrying a sun hat on the plane is just annoying.

Images of clothing being backed in and around a hat

I did this on a trip to Greece, and my wide-brim sun hat got there and back without a single crease!

20. Or try a *genius* magnetic hat clip that hooks right around your bag strap, luggage tag , zipper loop, or wherever to easily let your sun hat dangle from the side of your bag as you stroll your way through the airport. Way better than taking up space in your bag — or carrying it because your hands are full ENOUGH, thankyouverymuch.

The magnetic clip securely attaches to your hat brim (damage-free) — just attach around the strap/handle of your choosing!

Get it from Amazon for  $24.99  (available in three colors).

Promising review:  "The perfect travel accessory! Not sure why I hesitated to buy this for so long but I’m glad I finally did! The magnet has a very strong grip and perfect for straw hats and caps. It even grips my wool flatcaps as well. I can’t speak for thicker hats but this fits my needs perfectly. Bring on the sunny days!" — VF

Promising review: "Held strong through crowded airplane. Definitely recommend this hat magnet. I used it attached to my carry on bag. Even though it got bumped around getting on the plane & back to my seat, it never came off. My sun hat has a thick rim on it and it wasn’t an issue at all. The magnet held tight. Very good product." — CC

21. Stop wasting a single inch of space — fill your shoes with teensy packables like socks and undies. Off to somewhere chilly? Pack leggings or even your straightener/curling iron in boots to save space and help maintain your boots' shape.

A pair of sneakers in a shower cap, each stuffed with socks

Then you can pack your shoes inside shoe bags (like I do) to keep the dirty soles away from your clothes, or just pop on a shower cap  ( $4.99  for a set of three), like pictured here!

Get a pack of four drawstring shoe bags (they're clear tops so you can see which pair is which) for $15.99 at Amazon.

22. Fold one bra cup inside out into the other, then stuff the straps and band inside *that* cup for a compact packing method that won't ruin your favorite bras.

23. create a mini capsule wardrobe when packing; stick to just one palette, plus a few accent colors, so you can make the most from mixing and matching juuuust a few key pieces..

Another tip? Pull out all the clothes you want to bring, then put one third of them away — you probably won't need 'em!

24. Roll up a compact and collapsible water bottle , because it's incredibly easy to get dehydrated on a long-haul flight, and airport water is expensive! You can keep it handy in an outer pocket of your carry-on bag or backpack so you can fill it with ease, without losing on precious space.

Two portable water bottles, one standing when full, another folded small when empty

Reviewers love the one pictured above: it folds up truly tiny, has no weird plastic taste, and has an easy-to-clean wide mouth.

Get it from Amazon for $8.99+  (available in four sizes and 18 colors).

Promising review: "I took this water bottle on a recent trip to Iceland. In Iceland, water from any tap is glacier water and is absolutely delicious. This bottle made it easy to fill up whenever I wanted, even in I stream near a waterfall! It rolls up so it takes up little space. I never dribbled any while drinking, so I would say it's easy to drink from. It has a clip that would fit on a belt or belt loop, but I wear neither so I carried it easily with one finger in the clip. I found it easy to rinse. I'm 100% happy with the quality of this bottle." — nanykin

25. Decant your daily meds and vitamins, plus your just-in-case Advil and Tums, into compact  travel pill organizers , each with eight compartments (six small, two large) so you can bring all of your pills with you — without wasting space on a bunch of bulky bottles.

Reviewer's green case filled with pills

They also come with blank label stickers so you can note which pills are in which compartment.

Get the set of three from Amazon for  $7.97 .

Promising review:  "I love these! I have pretty severe ADHD, and I am constantly forgetting my meds when camping or hiking or just generally leaving the house for extended periods of time. These make it so much easier for me to just squirrel away in my backpack and be so pleased when I find them again. The labels are great, they are durable, and I'm no longer finding stray pills of unknown origin in the bottom of my bag. Highly recommend." — Eliza

26. Select your most key pieces of jewelry and keep them safely stored in a truly mini (and gorge) jewelry case like this pretty velvet one. You'll feel fully accessorized without wasting space or weighing your bag down with heavy pieces.

The square open zipper case in green velvet with ring holders and sections for necklaces and earrings

Get it from Amazon for $13.99 (available in nine colors).

Promising review: "Really amazing value – it looks pretty luxe but I can't believe the price I bought it for — especially considering how expensive jewelry boxes can be. I use this one for travel and it's perfect (I have a larger one for all my jewelry as well. I really like that you can move the little dividers in the bottom compartment around too that's been very helpful" — Dee

27. Every ounce of space is precious, which means you don't have room for a bulky neck pillow. But don't worry, that's what the Trtl pillow is for. It folds up thin and compact, and when you're ready to use, just wrap it around your neck — underneath the soft fleece is an internal support structure designed to keep your head in a comfy position for sleeping upright.

A model in the wrap pillow showing the internal structure

Get it from Amazon for  $59.99 (available in four colors).

Promising review:  "The trtl pillow is much better than a standard travel pillow due to the neck support it offers. It is difficult for me to sleep on planes but with the trtl i can sleep even in tiny cramped budget airline seats. It also folds pretty flat which makes it easy to pack in a carry on item. Most comfortable travel pillow." — Sofia Allison

28. Traveling with a carry-on and a (cough cough giant backpack) personal item (and a jacket) can get unwieldy, especially at security. Store your cash, boarding pass, passport, credit cards, etc. in a travel wallet that makes it super easy to see everything at a glance. And then just toss it in your carry-on when you're through security!

The travel wallet in rose gold

No more holding up the security line triple-checking to see if you still have your passport. Just a touch of first-class style, at an economy price. It's made of RFID-blocking material, too.

Get the one pictured above from Amazon for $11.99 (available in 39 colors).

Promising review: "I absolutely love this wallet. I needed a new travel wallet, and this holds everything I need all in one place, and it still closes nicely and stays flat! Boarding pass, passport, ID and credit cards, money, checked baggage tickets, receipts, etc.! Yet it doesn’t bulk up or look like an overstuffed mess . Just amazing. The description says it only holds US money, but I just used the boarding pass flap to hold all my Japanese yen (¥), which are larger. I didn’t use the zippered pocket for coins as I much prefer a separate coin purse for that sort of thing. I definitely recommend to anyone who travels a lot!" — Anthony Luu

29. Opt for a perfectly sized set of TSA-friendly travel bottles you can fill (and refill) with your favorite products when they don't make travel size — without taking up tons of room. Can't skip your fave skin and hair products when you're away, even when packing light!

The cream, peach, tan, and brown bottles in the clear case

Get the set of four containers, plus the clear case pictured above, from Amazon for $9.99 (available in 12 color sets).

Promising review: "I love these bottles. The suction in the cap is one way, so air does not filter back into the container. This means it will be so much easier to get the product out — you won't have to squeeze the air out first and then the product. They are such high quality and feel amazing. I love that they come with a carrying case to keep them all together!" — Katherine Milesusnich

Promising review: "I bought these for a ten-day trip. No leaks!! Plenty of product capacity for the entire time." — wendy smith

30. And add an easy, leakproof layer to your toiletries to avoid any big-time oopsies at your destination; just wrap a small square of cling wrap over the opening and pop the cap on top.

31. And btw, your favorite skincare brand (like Cosrx or Cerave might make a travel-friendly skincare set you can keep in your suitcase for trips and weekends away — then you'll NEVER forget it (or waste space).

the cosrx kit

Get the Cosrx snail mucin set (which includes Advanced Snail Mucin Gel Cleanser, Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Moisturizing Essence, Advanced Snail Peptide Eye Cream, and Advanced Snail 92 All In One Cream) from Amazon for $24.99 , and the Cerave set (which includes a foaming facial cleanser, a hydrating facial cleanser, a lightweight moisturizer, and a rich moisturizer) from Amazon for $34.23 .

Promising review (for the Cosrx set): "I ordered these to try all these products. Loved them all so bought the larger size to keep these for travel. Just make sure you mist face with water before putting on the mucin it does make a difference!" — kelly heinnbockel

Promising review (for the CeraVe set): "The moisturizer is great for winter and overnight in dry hotel rooms and airplanes. The cleansers can be doubled for face and body wash. No strong perfumes, doesn't dry skin. I traveled overseas for 2 weeks and still had plenty of these bottles left over when I returned home. Also great if you aren't sure which cleanser works best for you. Everything is perfect for sensitive skin! Face washes can double as body wash!" — Leanne Scorzoni

32. Keep your jumbo-sized signature scent bottle at home and pack a pocket-sized, refillable  rose gold travel perfume atomizer , so you can save space AND don't have to risk that perfume leaking allllll over your suitcase (an expensive nightmare). This one is so easy to refill, you'll end up popping it in your purse to get a fresh whiff in your everyday life at home, too!

BuzzFeed editor Elizabeth Lilly loves hers. In her own words: "I've been using for about a year. As the reviewer down below mentions, it's great to just throw in your purse on the reg for a fragrance re-up throughout the day. As you can see, it's about the size of my thumb and therefore takes up very little room. Plus! It's smaller than most rollerball travel fragrances you can pick up. This first one is working so well, that I just have the other three in storage. But if this one bites the dust this summer during travels, I'll be OK about digging into my stores to use one of the remaining three...especially at this price point."

Get a four-pack from Amazon for  $8.99 .

Promising review:  "I bought these due to traveling a lot for work and needing to cut down on the size of things in my carry-on bag for flying. I can bring four different perfumes now instead of one big one. They’re super easy to fill, and haven’t leaked so far, but I keep them in a sandwich baggie while traveling, just in case. I would 100% buy them again." — Emily

33. If you have a hard time traveling light when it comes to beauty products, you can't do better than this  hanging toiletry bag  to make traveling with all the beauty products you can't bear to leave behind *so* much easier — and compact. Plus, there's no need to unpack on the hotel bathroom counter — just unroll and hang, and you can see everything at a glance!

reviewer image with all the contents spread out on the bed that they were able to fit in the bag

I bought this for a recent trip, and I was legit shocked at how much I could fit inside — and it zips up to be surprisingly small! I bought the "medium" which was plenty big for my needs, especially if you're packing in a carry-on.

Promising review: "Seriously?! Do you see how much this holds?! Full shampoo bottles, face washes, hair brush... everything I could need or want to bring, FITS IN THIS ONE BAG!  And it’s so cute! Feels like great quality too — all the hardware came with protective wraps to keep from scratching and the zippers feel very hardy. The hook at the top is also VERY WELL-SECURED to the bag, it’s double stitched to the top panel and almost feels like seatbelt material. And I love the extra pockets and netting inside. I would absolutely recommend this!" — mahea_c

Get it from Amazon for $22.99+ (available in two sizes and six colors).

34. Swap your regular hot tool for a 2-in-1 straightener and curling iron so you only have to bring *one* tool, no matter how you want to wear your hair. It has dual voltage for international trips, too.

The tool in black and rose gold

It has a swiveling, tangle-free cord, too.

Get it from Amazon for $59.95 (also available in white).

Promising review: "I bought this for a trip to Italy, as I didn't have a dual-voltage iron (and you can't just use a converter-adapter combination with things that heat up). I liked that it was a flat iron and curling iron combo, so I could change things up as I desired. It worked beautifully on our trip — I look nice in all my selfies ;) — and continues to work beautifully at home. In fact, I've replaced my old flat iron with this because of the versatility and now use this one every day. BTW, in case you are wondering, it automatically switches to the appropriate voltage, no looking for a switch or anything. You don't need to do anything but plug it in! Great product!" — Diane Field

35. Mini sizes of travel musts don't stop with skincare — if you have trouble sleeping when in hotels or unfamiliar places, a *truly teensy* mini white noise machine can help. And this palm-sized one is very carry-on (or even purse-/backpack-) friendly, too!  It has 15 different nonlooping sounds (including white noise, fan, rain, and more), the charge lasts for days at a time, and it can — quite literally — fit in your pocket.

A white noise machine in the palm of a reviewer's hand

I bought this little guy before a trip this year — and I am in love. I keep it on fan 1 (there are *three* different fan sound options), and it helped me sleep better in hotel rooms — and even a bit better next to a very loud snorer. I used it every night (for eight hours at a time) on a two-week trip, and I only had to charge it *twice*! And if you prefer, there are also several auto-shut-off timer options too.

Get it from Amazon for $18.99 (available in nine colors, plus two packs and packs that come with a travel case).

Promising review:  "I was certainly skeptical regarding this sound machine. I mean, how could this little round thing produce big noise? Well, I'm here to tell you it does!  I was astounded that after I had charged it up and turned it on the huge sound that came out of this!  I enjoy the fan noise the best. I read the reviews beforehand, and most were very positive....so I know I had to try it out as I don't go anywhere without my every night plug-in (big) noise machine...but that one is bulky...and I needed a smaller one for travel. The other wonderful thing about this little baby is that it is rechargeable! You don't need an outlet to use it unless you are charging it up. The directions were a little....well, let's just say there wasn't much to the directions...but if you have any common sense, it won't take you too long to figure out how it works. Just buy it! Especially for travel!" — T. Bellati

36. Put shoes by the wheels and lighter items toward the handle so that when your suitcase is upright & rolling, the shoes won't crush or wrinkle your clothes.

A graphic explaining the tip

Shop Delsey luggage like the one pictured here on Amazon .

37. Wear your bulkiest shoes on the plane, whether that's a pair of chunky sneakers , booties, etc. — you'll save suitcase space, but stay comfy on the long flight — especially if you wear some nice compression socks .

A reviewer in the all white sneakers with feet kicked up on a car dashboard

Hot take: As long as you have SOCKS ON and you don't usually have a super-aggressive foot odor (I'm sorry!), it's 100% OK to take your shoes off on a long international flight.

BTW, you can get the chunky sneakers pictured above from Amazon for $42.99 (available in women's sizes 6–11 and 22 colors and styles). One reviewer traveled in them all summer, and *20* reviewers said they feel like you're "walking on clouds"!

38. Rather than packing a giant sweatshirt you might not wear again, if you run cold, keep a blanket scarf easily accessible in your carry-on. It'll be lightweight enough to pack up small, but keep you significantly warmer on the freezing desert that is the internal airplane climate.

A reviewer in the plaid scarf

Get this one from Amazon for $17.89  (available in 33 colors and patterns).

Promising review: "I purchased this wrap so that I could use it as a blanket on the airplane and also use it as a fashion scarf on my travels . I've gotten many compliments on it and absolutely love it! Definitely one of my travel essentials now. I've also washed it a couple of times now and it's still in great shape." — C. Behrends

39. Big vacation reader? Leave the heavy, bulky books at home and bring HUNDREDS (or even THOUSANDS) of books with you in one little device — a Kindle !

model holding a kindle

I never thought I'd be an e-reader person, but living in a New York apartment with limited bookshelves changed my ways. I love love (love love love) my Kindle — especially for easily borrowing library books, squeezing in a few chapters on a subway ride, and of course traveling. I lit'rally read 10 times as much with a Kindle in my life.

Get the newest 2022 version ofr the basic Kindle (now with backlight and TWICE as much storage!) from Amazon for $99.99  (available in black and blue). Or shop the newest version of the Kindle Paperwhite ( $139.99 ) for poolside or beach reading — it's WATERPROOF *and* has an adjustable warm backlight!

40. Include a fold-up duffel on trips when you KNOW you'll be bringing back more than you came with. Just pack your purse on the way back and count this as your "personal item" — I won't tell.

The duffel in blue

This one folds into a teensy pouch when not in use, is tear and water resistant, and even has a separate side pocket for shoes. Aaaaand it has a strap on the side that slides easily over your roller luggage handle.

Just keep it in your regular suitcase between trips, and you'll never forget it. Fold-up duffels like these are my GO-TO when going on a vacation I know will be shopping heavy. And then you can bring your new finds on the plane to ensure they don't get lost (it's 20 inches, making it perfect for the overhead compartment).

Get it from Amazon for $17.99 (available in 23 colors and patterns).

Promising review: "We bought this to take with us when we visited our daughter who is studying abroad for four months. We figured she would not have enough room in her luggage when it was time to come home. Folded up, this bag was so compact and lightweight it took up almost no room in our own luggage for the trip over. Then, sure enough, she had a ton of clothes and shoes to send home with us and packed this bag full. We checked the bag and it made it through two international flights without a scratch. The BEST feature is the side strap that allows you to slide it over the handle of a rolling suitcase so you don't have to carry it. This is probably the most practical and the best-value item I have purchased in years. " — Tosa Mom

41. If you're traveling with kids, switch to a super-compact stroller that weighs less than 12 pounds and can fit in an overhead bin or even under a seat, because every penny counts when it comes to family vacations.

Reviewer's photo showing the folded stroller fitting the carryon size requirement for Southwest Airlines

The stroller is supposed to fit kids from 6 months up to 55 pounds (approx. 5 years).

Get it from Amazon for $279.99 .

Promising review: "This stroller is great! So cool looking, too. I constantly have moms coming up to me asking where I got this! So easy to fold, so light, and barely takes any space in my trunk. We took it on a flight, and the flight attendants recognized the stroller and told me that I can just wheel the baby on and put the stroller in the overhead bin. I wish I had gotten this stroller with my oldest, but I was being cheap. This stroller is so worth the money. I regret not getting it sooner! But at least my youngest can enjoy it." — Nai Len

Because spoiler alert: This won't fit into the overhead compartment.

Whatever your travel needs for the season ahead, odds are that a good tote can make your packing life more organized, and less stressful—honestly, what more could you hope for? With that in mind, we've scoured the internet for the more durable, functional travel totes for every type of traveler, from the serial overpacker to the organization fiend. Here, our favorite finds for all of your journeys.

Perpetually trying to find space in your carry-on for one last thing? Meet what one T&C editor calls, "the personal item of every overpacker's dream." Featuring five exterior pockets, plus six on the interior and an detachably pouch, it will keep all of your travel essentials organized while it's sturdy-yet-lightweight construction makes it easy to tuck in "just in case" items to your hearts desire without overwhelming your arms.

The cushy, reinforced straps are easy on the shoulders, but it also has a detachable crossbody strap and a built-in sleeve to slip over the handle of your luggage if you don't feel like toting. It also comes in four sizes (we're fond of the medium for it's ability to hold oodles of stuff while still slipping neatly beneath the seat in front of you on a plane) and a seasonally-refreshed roster of more than a dozen shades, making it as stylish as it is functional.

Lo & Sons Catalina Deluxe Tote

For the "a place for everything and everything in its place" traveler, this tote has you covered with a zippered bottom pocket that's perfect for separating out toiletries or dirty shoes from the rest of your haul (an interior panel also allows you to open the bottom compartment fully, if you're craving a deeper bag.)

Available in recycled poly or sturdy canvas, at 15" x 14" x 7", it qualifies as a personal item for most airlines and has a handy luggage sleeve to pair with your suitcase. For those looking for larger options, it comes in four additional sizes as well.

Cuyana bags are a favorite of T&C editors and royals alike ( Meghan Markle is a big fan ) for their timelessly stylish silhouettes, buttery soft leather, and effortless functionality. This, their latest launch, is made specifically with travel in mind.

Crafted with lightweight, durable pebbled leather (currently available in four colorways) it offers ample interior space (a 37L volume, to be precise) plus two large pockets, a phone slip, and a key clip, as well as snaps for Cuyana devotees who want to mix in their System Flap Bag or System Zipper Pouch .

If you're more of a "shop when you get there" traveler, this bag brings the souvenir space without taking up lots of room in your primary bag. Water-repellant and roomy (it holds 32L by volume) it features rugged shoulder straps, plus an extra strap that lets it slip over the handle of roller luggage, and can fold into its own exterior pouch when not in use to make a tidy, handheld bundle.

Some things are classic for a reason. Case in point: this timeless Longchamp tote; just ask T&C 's associate shopping editor, Sophie Dweck, who's been carrying hers for over a decade . Made from sleek, easy-to-clean nylon that comes in a cornucopia of colors, it features a simple, spacious interior and strong leather straps that ensure it can stand up to anything your travels throw at it, and look good doing it.

Looking for a tote that's as useful in your day-to-day as it is when you're far away? This multi-use tote has racked up thousands of five-star reviews on Amazon for its versatility. A separate, vented shoe compartment makes it as friendly to gym sessions as beach trips, while its multiple pockets keep essentials organized. It also includes a luggage strap and a USB charging port so you can plug in your tech without rummaging through your bag for your battery pack, and comes in two sizes and almost 30 shades so it will match your travel style.

One reviewer writes: "I must say, it exceeded my expectations in every way! This bag is the perfect blend of style and functionality, making it a must-have for any woman on the go."

Type-A packers, take note: this 100% recycled polyester is all about options. Its four colorways can be worn crossbody, carried in hand, or over the shoulder, and include a zippered exterior pocket, a luggage sleeve, two water bottle holders, and a padded laptop sleeve—all with Everlane's signature modern minimalist vibe.

Available in 20 colorways and textures, this canvas tote features a luggage sleeve that also doubles as a tech pouch so your gadgets will always be at the ready. The sturdy construction and bargain price tag have made it a hit with reviewers, who site its roomy 16.5" x 9" x 14" size and comfort.

One reviewer writes: "I am so happy with this purchase! Reasonable price, large main compartment, and a few zip compartments to organize smaller items. Bag fits perfectly under airline seat, even when stuffed FULL. It stayed in place when I had it on top of my roller bag, and I noticed the shape of it kept it from making everything tip forward (which happened with my previous bag)."

Passengers are carrying plane parts in their luggage to get them to sanction-hit Russian airlines: report

  • Sanction-hit Russian airlines are getting plane parts delivered in hand luggage, per the Financial Times.
  • A Middle East company has sent $1.5 million of goods to Russia's S7 airline, the FT reported.
  • Flight safety incidents involving Russian planes have shot up, according to estimates.

Insider Today

Passengers are carrying plane parts in their luggage to get them to sanction-hit Russian airlines, according to the Financial Times .

Russian airlines are obtaining plane parts through a vast network of small suppliers, many of which are based in the United Arab Emirates, the FT reported.

The outlet highlighted one incident from mid-2022 when staff at a Moscow airport found a $40,000 plane part in a passenger's luggage.

The equipment was destined for Russia's second-largest airline, S7, the FT reported, and was one of 11 similar parts sent in passenger bags to Moscow that year, all of them reported in customs forms.

In the wake of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Western countries imposed heavy sanctions and export controls on Russia's aviation sector.

Related stories

The sanctions have made it difficult for the country's airlines to get their hands on new planes or parts to maintain their existing aircraft.

They have also opened up more unorthodox supply routes.

The FT cited Turboshaft, a UAE-based provider and exporter of aircraft parts run by a Russian-born businessman.

According to customs data seen by the outlet, Turboshaft has shipped $1.5 million of goods to S7 since the start of the war.

Turboshaft didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, but a spokesperson for company boss Timur Badr told the FT that it had stopped providing plane parts to Russia in February 2022 and that it was "aware of, and respectful of, the international sanctions regime."

According to data collected by the FT from various sources, S7 and its subsidiaries saw their imports of plane parts drop from over $100 million a month in December 2021 to less than $25 million a month in April 2022.

Meanwhile, the number of flight safety incidents involving Russian planes has more than doubled, from 37 in 2022 to 81 in 2023, according to the Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre .

Those figures also only reflect known cases, the center's founder and CEO, Jan-Arwed Richter, told The Telegraph earlier this year, adding: "There is still a dark figure of unreported incidents."

Watch: Russia is buying back weapons it sold to other countries as its arsenal runs low
