Trek 2001 T100 Older Tandem Bike

Bought the T100 new in 1992-93. My wife and I toured pulling a Bob trailer. East coast, west coast, and 1600 miles in Australia. Before the Australian trip, upgraded wheels and added a disc drag brake for long downhills. Very comfortable frame for older riders. Easy to maneuver and original gearing robust. It's been years since we've ridden, but it's a great bike.

Great frame, no problem with the wheels or any other components. After 10 years or so in an unheated storage shed the crank bolts were rusty, that was about it.

The original saddles were awful and changed out years ago. It really needed the shock absorbing seatpost on the rear (again added when it was new).

I bought this new in the mid 90's, rode it for a few years and recently got it back on the road.

One of the best low-cost (in tandem bike terms) frames. The Cr-Mo butted tubes are brazed directly, excellent repetitive welding quality. Made in USA, by the way, in the 1990s. Mine is the largest frame size, 32" front stand-over height, and even in this size the frame is solid and stiff enough for touring. Good Shimano component set. Again, for the price, a lot of tandem bike.

Wheels were / are reported weak. Catalogs show various wheel types over the years 1992 - 1999. Stock tires were trash, but time has long since cured that on any used Trek. Short on "extras" such as suspension seat posts, drum drag brakes in the "standard" Trek line, as befits a lower end line. Paint is high quality, but a bit drab in color.

Trek T100 "Double Trek" Purchased new in 1997 for $960. Even then Trek was heavily discounted as (per Bill McCready) their tandem sales never approached marketing forecasts. This is the "hybrid" model with a more upgright position than the T200 (which shares the identical frame set). Shimano tandem set components. Triple Front chainrings of various sizes were fitted over the years, mine was 28-38-48 but Trek catalog also lists 30-42-54. Seven speed Shimano cassette, stock was 11-30 or 12-28.

A Santana of any model from 1990s is superior, but it will also command several times the price of a T100.

The Trek T 100 is a tandem/mountain bike with a chromoly and steel True Temper frame. The frame comes in colors like green, Ice  Green and Pearl  Blue.

It was originally released in 1993. Due to the size and frame materials, we estimate that this bike weighs around 35 pounds. The T 100 is fully rigid.

The T 100 comes with Mix and Shimano Deore components, including a chromoly, oversized, System Rear stem, a steel, threadless, sealed YST headset and grip-shift, SRT-400, Shimano Deore DX Rapidfire Plus, SRT-600 SRT-400i shifters.

The T 100 has 7 speeds and has a Shimano derailleur.

It comes with Trek Invert tires (622mm x NaN) and metal matrix composite, Bontrager Clyde, Trek/ Titan Tour, Titan Fast rims.

Trek produced the T100 bike in 1994 and can be classified as a Tandem bicycle, this exact model costs in american market arround $1,799.00. T100 bike is available in many sizes such as Captain 50cm/stoker 46 cm (centimeters), captain 54 cm/stoker 50 cm (centimeters), captain 57 cm/stoker 47 cm (centimeters), captain 58 cm/stoker 53 cm (centimeters) and captain 62 cm/stoker 56 cm (centimeters). Trek Tandem T100 can be found in one single color which is Not found. This bike is equiped with 700 x 35c Trek Invert II tires while the rims are manufactured by Matrix Titan Tech, 36-hole/40-hole. Trek equiped this exact model with Shimano Deore DX M-System brakes, levers braking system and Shimano Deore XT hubs. To guarantee the comfiest ride Trek used True Temper chromoly, custom-butted material for the frame. Trek System 2 ATB high strength material is used on the handlebar of this T100 to ensure the perfect handling while the stems are made of Trek System 1 tandem chromoly front and rear. Trek T100? Worth it?

So I am just starting to look at tandems... Looking for a starter bike, don't want a wal-mart bike, don't want to drop $2k-$4k on a bike till I know I will use it... So I am looking used. I have seen several adds (or probably the same add listed several times) for a Trek T100. Year, maybe '02,'03. no group listed. Pic shows a black skinny tube bike with drop bars, can't tell much else... Any one know if the T100 is worth a look? What group should I expect to see? Asking price is around $600-$800... and yah, I did a search, didn't come up with anything... As a Trek, I would expect it to be a decent bike, but probably not a great bike... Is that about right? Thanks ya'll.

Also, per bikepedia.com, the T100 didn't have drop bars, so someone's done some modifications. I'd make sure everything shifts nicely under load, then offer $400 if it's in nice shape.  

I cannot say what is a fair price, but.... getting a good tandem in good shape for less that a grand is good news IMHO. I have a slightly older version of the T100 bike and I think it is a very good entry-level tandem. Most of the entry level tandems around at the time I got mine were much less stable and felt pretty noodle-y in speedy cornering. The Trek engineering and design was very good, and spec'ing was quite decent. They did make tandems with drop bars, I don't know if they did in the year that you are thinking of.
