Our beliefs

We believe in doing things differently. No standard approach, but a sailormade approach. Every ship has its own audience and opportunities, we adjust our dishes and services to these factors. This customer centric thinking requires a lot of flexibility and empathy. In other words: creative catering. That is our core competence.

Customer centric

We recruit, train and coach catering professionals like chefs, cooks, waiters, hosts and maids to make a difference for the guests every day. They can only do that by adjusting to the desires of the guests. They push hospitality to the max for the highest customer satisfaction possible.

We know food and beverages are crucial to the cruise experience. That is why our chefs innovate the taste and presentation of the dishes constantly, to make sure the guests are being surprised by the food every meal again. Even if they yearly embark on the same cruise. Not only the recipes evolve, every chef is aiming for perfect presentation and a consistent quality.

Adaptability

The secret of great full service catering is adaptability to the desires of the shipping company. Together we create true customer satisfaction. We cannot do that with a standard approach, we have to do that by adapting to the ship and its guests.

What makes working and living on board river ships special

The special thing about a job on board a river cruise ship is not just the exciting routes through the most beautiful river landscapes in Europe and other parts of the world. Due to the small size of the ships and the small number of guests , you have the opportunity to provide individual service . One big difference to ocean cruises is that most river cruise ships do not operate all year round. Most river ships take a break for several months in the winter . So you can work on board for a whole season – shorter assignments or contracts over the summer months are also possible.

What awaits you on board our river ships

The work on board a river cruise ship is unique – especially because of the small number of guests and a maximum of 30 to 60 crew members . The team comes from all over the world, and the guests are also often international – so English is a basic requirement on river boats. German is also relevant in interaction with the guests. Openness, understanding and mutual respect are important for working on board. We expect qualified, dedicated commitment, combined with the right amount of passion for the catering and hotel sector. During your contract you will work 7 days a week – with 2 days off a month that you can use to explore the destinations. We also support our crew members by means of the “sea chefs – The Journey” program with further education measures and training. Always be a ship’s length ahead: The personal development of every single crew member is very important to us – therefore with a lot of motivation and commitment our crew members have a good chance of building a career within a short time.

About the company.

Greece Cruise Job photo

How many vessels does your company operate?

We have a fleet of 11 vessels. Our small ships include the MY Harmony V, the MY Harmony G, the SC Panorama, SC Panorama II, MS Galileo, MY Pegasus, and MY Variety Voyager. Our yachts comprise of the MY Obsession, MY Monte Carlo, MY Absolute King, and the SY Christiana VIII.

What would the shipboard experience be like for a typical employee?

Well this differs depending on the ship you work on. For the yacht crews, where you are one of only a handful of staff, you must have great attention to detail and be willing to help with anything you can on board. You will get more one on one time with guests.

On the small ships you will need to possibly work harder as you have more to attend to and you will not necessarily get to speak to guests, but you can expect more team work.

What are some of the common job titles you advertise for?

We need wait staff and servers frequently, as these don't really require much in the way of qualifications or experience, but we also advertise for deckhands and other hospitality staff quite often.

What are the typical terms of employment offered?

Employment is offered either seasonally, on a temporary, casual basis, or full time. Free accommodation and meals are offered as part of your employment.

What advice would you give people to help them prepare for interviews with your company?

Make sure that you have read up on our company and know the vessels. Have an understanding of the position you are interviewing for, and come well dressed, and on time. Show us your positivity, service skills, and friendly, outgoing nature, and you will do well.

What are some common misperceptions people have about working on cruise ships?

There are lots of these, but the most common I think is that people want to have a working holiday where they work for a few hours and then have the rest of time off to sight see and relax. This is very far from the truth and you could end up working 12 hours a day or more, depending on the size of the vessel and how many staff members are on board. Whatever shifts you might have, you are basically on call to work 24 hours a day, especially if there happens to be an emergency, so it is not a holiday at all.

Another one I hear often is that people will get paid a huge salary and come off the cruise rich. The wages are competitive and market related, but they will definitely not make you rich. Maybe you will spend less money being on board and working such long hours, so that is true, but you don't earn an abnormally high wage.

Cruise Ship Jobs in Europe

Cruise ship tours in Europe are an extremely popular vacation choice for many people. There are cruises along the West coast of Europe along France and Portugal, cruises along the North coast of Germany and Norway, and of course, Mediterranean cruises. River cruises have become extremely popular, too.

What this means for you is that there are a lot of ships that cruise these areas and so a lot of jobs are to be had.

A cruise ship is essentially a giant, floating hotel in a small town, but working on a cruise ship is not like working in a hotel on land.

There are Many Cruise Jobs Available Around Europe in Many Countries

For one thing, you have to sign up for a four to eight month contract.

You also work seven days a week and very long hours each day. In terms of living conditions, you will be bunking with someone else in a very small cabin and, to top it off, you had better hope you do not get seasick very easily.

There are all kinds of different positions available on a cruise ship, but most of the jobs fall into one of three categories:

  • Entertainment/activity staff
  • Service & hospitality staff, and
  • Deck & engineering crew.

Bookmark this cruise job listings page on JobMonkey for a list of current openings.

Wages are usually around $1,000-$2,000 per month for staff and $2,000-$3,000 per month for officers and managers. While these numbers may seem low, remember that while you are on board, all of your accommodations and food is paid for.

With activity & entertainment staff jobs , you are the front line in terms of customer service. You are the staff that works up front with the tourists and your primary function is to make sure that they are enjoying themselves. There are all kinds of different jobs in this category, from hosts and hostesses, to dancers, art auctioneers, and excursion guides.

Service and hospitality staff are the people who work behind the scenes to keep the guest services running smoothly. This includes positions in housekeeping, food and beverage services, hotel administration, or with the purser staff. This kind of work is going to be very similar to the same type of job in a hotel on land.

Finally, there are ship specific deck and engineering crew positions . These jobs deal with the day to day maintenance and operations of the ship itself and include ship officers, engineers, carpenters, and electricians.

To be honest, very few North Americans get hired for crew positions; most of these positions are filled by other nationalities. If you are trying for one of these positions, you will definitely need more experience than usual to get your foot in the door.

You may or may not have to pay for your own way to the ship in Europe prior to starting, or the cruise line might pay for your return ticket at the end of your contract. Also, do not be concerned about a work visa with a cruise ship job. They will help you get the appropriate sea crew visas that you will need; most cruise ships have a very multinational crew, so cruise lines are very used to getting these requirements processed quickly.

There are all kinds of web pages out there that will sell you material on how to get a cruise ship job. But there are just as many websites that offer the information for free, so do some real research before you spend your money. A great place to start is JobMonkey’s own Cruise Ship Employment section.

Ocean views and unreliable Wi-Fi: What it's like to work from a transatlantic cruise

work in cruise ships europe

  • As many employees do their jobs remotely, even while traveling, I tried working from a transatlantic cruise.
  • The Wi-Fi was generally reliable, but there were interruptions.
  • I had an easier time working in some parts of the ship than others.

During a cruise last month, I experienced a version of Murphy's Law for the era of remote work: When I needed the Wi-Fi most, it stopped working.

I was due to conduct a video interview while on a transatlantic sailing from the Netherlands to New York a few days into the trip, and the internet connection had been reliable, if not speedy. But a couple of hours before the meeting time, as we sailed away from our stop in England toward the United States, the already sluggish connection came to a halt.

I spent the next 90 minutes or so frantically refreshing my browser window and trying to contact my colleagues to see if anyone might be able to attend in my place. I was finally able to reach my editor via the phone in my stateroom, and my co-worker kindly filled in for me.

As more companies have adopted a remote or hybrid work model in the wake of the pandemic, employees are doing their jobs from a wide range of places, including while traveling. Among U.S. companies, 74% have or plan to use a permanent hybrid work model, and 44% of employees in America "prefer a hybrid work model," according to research compiled by  Zippia.com .

While I covered the Holland America Line voyage from Rotterdam in the Netherlands, I set out to see whether I could work and sail across the Atlantic Ocean. And while experiences may differ from cruise to cruise, much like the waves outside rocked the ship, there were ups and downs.

Here's what I learned about working remotely on a transatlantic voyage.

Is cruise Wi-Fi good enough to work from?

When I boarded the ship on Oct. 15, I was able to connect my devices to the ship's Wi-Fi network easily. I paid for the premium package for the duration of the trip – through Oct. 27 – that allowed me to connect up to four devices for about $320.

The connection was largely reliable but overall slower than my home or office Wi-Fi, which I expected. However, the connection became especially slow at random points throughout the trip in unpredictable ways. For instance, about four days into the cruise, I tried working in Google Docs only to have it repeatedly stall as it were "trying to connect," even as other websites seemed to load fine.

While I was able to download photos easily, I had trouble uploading photos to our content management system. Making calls was also challenging. When I used my phone's Wi-Fi calling feature, the connection was spotty, and I experienced an audio delay through WhatsApp, though the call quality was better.

Working offline as much as possible provided a workaround, by switching from Google Docs to Microsoft Word, for instance, and downloading any necessary files during periods when the internet was the strongest.

The connection's lags were always temporary, as well, and connectivity usually returned to its full functionality within a few minutes or hours.

Time zones can be confusing

During our cruise, we repeatedly changed time zones. Because we were going from Europe to the U.S., we gained time and set our clocks back one hour a total of five times.

That meant extra-long nights of sleep but proved a puzzle with ever-changing pieces as I tried to keep track of how far removed I was from my usual working hours. For the first part of the cruise, for example, I got up in the morning as most of my colleagues were probably fast asleep, but by the end, we were back in the same time zone.

While I typically keep track of time using my cellphone, it stopped automatically updating as we got farther from land. But the home page of Holland America's Navigator app always displayed the current ship time, as did my stateroom's TV, and I manually changed the time on my phone accordingly.

And when in doubt, searching the local time in a given place on Google is a quick and easy way to double-check time differences.

Some areas of the ship are better for working than others

Like many modern cruise ships, Holland America's Rotterdam had no shortage of activities, from lectures and fitness classes to games like bingo. Those were particularly useful on sea days, of which a transatlantic cruise has many, but also meant some parts of the ship were less conducive to working at certain times.

I snagged a spot in a plush chair at the Crow's Nest on Deck 12 one afternoon and worked for about half an hour before the host of a trivia game began reading questions over the loudspeaker. After trying in vain to compete with the sound by turning up the music in my headphones, I retreated to my stateroom.

The ship's daily programs distributed to cabins included a list of activities with times and locations and can help passengers determine which locations might be quieter than others. Rotterdam also had an on-board library and an internet center with computers.

I primarily worked in my stateroom, which had a desk with more than enough room for my laptop and other items like a notepad, power outlets, and a view of the ocean.

Despite the challenges, while on board I was able to turn in stories, communicate with my colleagues (much of the time), and do most of the usual functions of my job from an unlikely place.

‘msc euribia’: see inside northern europe’s newest cruise ship.

Built in 2023, the MSC Euribia cruise ship spends much of the year in Northern Europe.

The newest cruise ship in the MSC Cruises fleet sails Northern Europe itineraries for much of the year. There’s lots to see and do between port calls, so Euribia is a great choice for families, young couples, or groups of friends who don't mind a lively, pan-European onboard atmosphere.

Unlike the line’s other recently-launched ship, MSC World Europa , which was the first in a new class of vessel, the design of Euribia is based on the tried-and-tested ‘Meraviglia Plus’ class.

So, if you’ve sailed on Grandiosa or Virtuosa , the focus on indoor spaces such as the iconic two-deck interior promenade will feel instantly familiar.

The cruise ship, designed to accommodate almost 5,000 passengers at double occupancy, can reach full capacity at 6,327 guests, but this typically happens only during vacation periods when many more children are on board.

'Galleria Euribia' is the venue for many of MSC Euribia's restaurants, shops, bars and parties.

Euribia can feel crowded at popular times, such as pre- and post-dinner on sea days. That’s especially true when adverse weather drives everyone indoors—common in Northern Europe throughout the year.

However, it’s worth taking the time to fully explore the ship on embarkation day , as there are quieter spots to be found. The Carousel Lounge is open throughout the day, and there is a lot of seating around the atrium.

Entertainment For All On Euribia

MSC Cruises is known as a lively cruise line , and Euribia certainly lives up to that reputation, with multilingual, family-friendly activities throughout the day and late-night parties for adults.

The three-level atrium on MSC Euribia features the signature Swarovski staircases.

The ship’s central feature is the three-deck central atrium and ‘Galleria Euribia’, a visually stunning two-deck interior promenade with a curved LED roof, home to specialty dining, shops, bars, and lounges. It’s a venue for both organized and spontaneous parties, including the captain’s welcome. At one end is the atrium, home to the famous Swarovski staircases .

The ship boasts a spacious rooftop pool deck and a tiered aft sundeck. Key attractions like waterslides, a ropes course, and top-deck waterpark are all popular spots when the weather is favorable. Should that not be the case, there is sheltered seating on the main pool deck.

MSC Euribia features a main pool deck with a large screen. An adjacent indoor pool with retractable ... [+] roof gives flexibility.

Inside, the fun keeps going with a covered swimming pool, more hot tubs, a sports court and a vast arcade. Kids clubs are available for various age groups, giving parents a few hours of peace especially on sea days.

Evening entertainment includes three seatings for the main show in the Delphi Theater, which is bookable using the ‘MSC for Me’ app. Although there is no theater bar, the ship’s 21 bars and lounges mean you’re never far from a drink, although be prepared to wait a while at busy times.

Secondary performance space the Carousel Lounge hosts big band concerts in a more informal atmosphere. The flexible space functions as an additional observation lounge during the day, with snacks and full bar service available.

MSC Euribia's Carousel Lounge is an observation lounge by day and a secondary performance space by ... [+] night.

As with all cruise ships, the casino is only open when at sea, and as a welcome plus is entirely non-smoking. Smokers are nevertheless well catered for with several outdoor smoking areas around the ship.

Accommodation Options

The 2,419 cabins on Euribia offer a wide range of choice for guests, although the brown and beige color scheme won’t be to everyone’s taste.

The 755 interior cabins offer the best value, while duplex suites with balcony hot tubs are available for those seeking the most luxurious experience.

Balcony views can be worth the extra money on Norwegian fjords itineraries.

The high number of guests typically sailing on Euribia is one of two very good reasons to splurge on one of more than 1,000 balcony cabins. The other? Northern Europe itself, especially Norwegian fjords cruises .

Such cruises are partly about the ports, but just as much about the sailaway. Having a private space from which to enjoy the scenery is worthwhile. That being said, inside cabins on Euribia are spacious compared with industry standards, and offer the best value.

Inside cabins are an economical yet comfortable way of staying on MSC Euribia.

There is plenty of outdoor space on higher decks to enjoy the scenery, although you will struggle to find a window seat in popular lounges.

Varied Dining Venues

As a line firmly in the mass-market segment of the industry, MSC is not renowned for its food offering. Yet, steady improvement has been made in recent years.

Kaito sushi bar is a speciality restaurant on MSC Euribia.

The inclusive offerings are more than satisfactory, especially the seafood, and the ship’s breads and pasta, all made on board. Also produced on board is fresh mozzarella. More than 650 pounds of it is made—and eaten—every day.

Euribia’s buffet restaurant can be hit-and-miss and does get crowded at popular times, but at least one main dining room is also open for breakfast/brunch/lunch, depending on the day.

White corn tacos are among the menu items at MSC Euribia's Mexican-themed cantina.

Adding to the choice is a number of speciality restaurants, including French-themed Le Grill, Japanese grill, sushi bar, and a Mexican cantina. The latter, with authentic white corn tacos and a $20 all-you-can-eat option, is outstanding value.

Spa And Fitness

With the availability of delicious pizza almost 24/7, it’s wise to get familiar with the fitness offer on Euribia. A well-equipped fitness center with views is open from 6am, and the combined walking and jogging track on deck 16 is popular on sea days.

Part of the thermal suite on MSC Euribia.

The Aurea Spa features a thermal area, for which day passes or cruise-long passes are available. A variety of massages and treatments are available in private treatment rooms, while a nail and beauty salon, and a barber shop rounds out the offer.

Aside from the spa, a total of five swimming pools and several hot tubs are available throughout the ship.

The Yacht Club Experience

If the Vegas-style amenities and atmosphere appeal but you want some peace and quiet too, Euribia offers the MSC Yacht Club experience.

The Top Sail Lounge is an observation lounge and bar exclusively for Yacht Club guests on MSC ... [+] Euribia.

MSC’s take on the ‘ship-within-a-ship’ concept is an access-controlled area of the ship for 100 cabins with an exclusive restaurant, bar and lounge, and an outdoor deck with pool, bar and daytime buffet.

Situated at the front of the ship, both the outside deck and observation lounge offer some of the best views anywhere on Euribia .

Unlike other line’s premium offerings, Euribia’s Yacht Club features a range of accommodation, including interior cabins, giving guests a more budget-friendly way to accessing a premium experience.

The private terrace in MSC Euribia's Yacht Club features bar service, a daytime buffet, and a ... [+] private pool.

Guests staying in the Yacht Club pay substantially more, but have access to butler service, and a premium drinks package, among other perks.

A ‘Greener’ Ship

While cruising is anything but a sustainable activity, Euribia is powered by liquified natural gas (LNG), something which not all new cruise ships are.

Although still criticized by environmental campaigners, LNG is considered the ‘greenest’ fuel that’s available today at the scale required for cruise ships. LNG significantly reduces sulphur oxide (SOx) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions compared with traditional maritime fuels.

MSC also claims an advanced onboard wastewater treatment system, energy efficiency through smart HVAC systems, and the ongoing ocean conservation work of the MSC Foundation .

Euribia isn’t for everyone, but what cruise ship is? If you enjoy a lively atmosphere, a packed program of activities, and a healthy dose of Vegas-style sparkle and glamor, Euribia could be for you.

Holland America Line Expands Programming For 2024 Solar Eclipse Cruises With Astronomy Experts Aboard Koningsdam, Zaandam

Last chance: ‘Have it All Early Booking Bonus’ for Summer 2024 cruises adds upgraded beverage and Wi-Fi packages — a value of $126 per person per day — but must be booked by Sept. 30, 2023

Seattle, Wash., Aug. 3, 2023  — For travelers planning cruises next year and seeking the best cruise offers, Holland America Lines' “Have it All Early Booking Bonus” adds extra benefits and top premium amenities at 60% off. But there’s only two months to go for the limited-time offer on 2024 cruises to Europe, Alaska and Canada/New England, with the special promotion expiring Sept. 30, 2023.

Holland America Line guests receive added perks when booking these 2024 cruises with the “ Have it All Early Booking Bonus   that include free upgrades to the Elite Beverage Package and Premium Wi-Fi, as well as free prepaid Crew Appreciation and a Low Fare Guarantee, ensuring that guests receive the lowest starting price. The standard Have it All package also includes the amenities of shore excursions and specialty dining along with the Signature Beverage and Surf Wi-Fi packages. The specialty restaurant visits and shore excursion credit increase depending on the length of cruise.

“Holland America Line’s Have It All premium package has proven to be popular since we launched it, and adding extra perks like free prepaid crew appreciation makes it even more advantageous for our guests,” said Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer of Holland America Line. “When we open new cruises we hope to entice travelers to book early by adding these extra perks, but they are only available for a limited time so now is the time to plan ahead and book before the offer ends.”

More Glaciers and Wildlife in Alaska

From April through September 2024, guests can embark on Holland America Line’s cruises to  Alaska  aboard Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Westerdam and Zaandam .  The cruise line is debuting a new  28-day Arctic Circle  itinerary in 2024 that includes 12 Alaska ports, longer 14-day voyages and 117 weeklong journeys, enhancing its position as the leader in Alaska cruising.

Every Alaska cruise includes a visit to one or more of Alaska’s iconic glacier destinations: Glacier Bay National Park, College Fjord, Dawes Glacier, Hubbard Glacier and Twin Sawyer Glaciers of Tracy Arm. Holland America Line has more visits to Glacier Bay than any other cruise line.

For guests who want to explore the region further, Holland America Line’s  Cruisetours  combine a cruise with an overland adventure to Denali and the Yukon. Holland America Line is the only cruise line the ventures deep into the wilds of the Yukon.

From Northern Europe to the Mediterranean

For Holland America Line’s 2024  Europe  season, the cruise line is adding several new itineraries that combine regions, increasing the number of voyages of 14 days or longer and enhancing Northern Europe with new departure ports. From April to November dozens of unique itineraries — ranging from seven to 35 days — will be offered on   two of the line’s Pinnacle Class ships, Nieuw Statendam   and   Rotterdam, along with   Oosterdam   and Zuiderdam .

The four Holland America Line ships will cover the entire region on voyages designed for cultural immersion. Nine overnight ports and 33 late-night departure cities provide more time ashore while the ships explore the Baltic, British Isles, Canary Islands, French and Spanish rivieras, Israel, Mediterranean and Northern Europe, including Iceland, Greenland and Norway.

Charming Canada and New England

Holland America Line’s 2024  Canada and New England  season is set to feature 29 sailings that range from weeklong getaways to longer, more in-depth journeys. The close-to-home cruises that depart or end in Boston, Massachusetts, are idyllic for family getaways and guests looking to explore North America’s Atlantic Coast. Several of the extended itineraries also stretch up to the dramatic landscapes of Iceland and Greenland.

From April through October, Volendam and Zuiderdam offer a series of seven-day “Canada & New England Discovery” departures with ports that showcase region’s delicious seafood, deep maritime history, quintessential charm and natural beauty. Ten- and 11-day cruises on Volendam add Newfoundland, while a 24-day expedition adds Greenland and a circumnavigation of Iceland.

Cruise fares begin at US $1,164 per person, double occupancy, for a seven-day departure with the “Have it All Early Booking Bonus.”
