We’d all rather look well-groomed while traveling. However, any traveler is familiar with the headache of opening your suitcase only to find all your clothes limp and wrinkled.

The most convenient tool for addressing this problem is the travel iron. This handy tool is specially designed to fit in your suitcase and is powerful enough to keep you looking tidy. Choosing the best travel iron can be intimidating, but we will guide you through the whole process.

It’s important to know what to look for when you are setting out to buy a travel iron. Perhaps your foremost consideration will be the size and weight of the iron in order to maximize your luggage storage space.

But there are several other factors to keep in mind, including the iron’s power and heat control. Let’s dig a little deeper into these aspects.

Weight and Size

Travel iron weight and size

One of the biggest advantages travel irons have over regular ones is their weight. Made to be easily portable in your luggage, they weigh significantly less than regular irons. Look for an iron that weighs approximately 1 pound .

As for size, a travel iron is built to fit perfectly into your suitcase or travel bag. This convenient tool’s dimensions typically vary from 6 to 8 inches in length.

Ease of Use

Travel iron ease of use

When it comes to a travel iron’s ease of use, there are a couple of things you should be aware of. First, take a good look at the handle and see if it looks comfortable . A functional handle will go a long way in making your iron usable. Second, the best travel irons include motion-sensitive technology, helping you iron faster and with greater precision.

On top of that, there are some really interesting additional features you can look out for, like anti-drip or water-spraying features, both of which contribute to overall ease of use when it comes to ironing.

Heat Control

Travel iron heat control

If you’re looking at an iron without the option to control the heat level, think again. Any travel iron on your shortlist should have this ability. You don’t want to iron synthetic clothes with the same level of heat as cotton clothes.

Hot Tip: Look for an iron that has printed indicators on the swivel that denote exactly what each level is for.

If you are traveling to a different country, look for an iron with dual voltage . You will likely be dealing with different voltages, which can render your travel iron useless.

If you plug your iron into a higher voltage source, you run the risk of frying it.

Similarly, power is an important consideration when choosing a travel iron. Simply speaking, more powerful irons are made for heavier clothes or fabrics that are hard to iron. So, choose wisely, and if you plan on straightening heavier clothes like hoodies or jeans, find a 1,000-watt iron that can handle the job .

On the other hand, lighter clothes like t-shirts and shorts will not require a powerful iron.

Portability

Travel iron portability

Weigh the portability of your travel iron against its power output. You don’t want to have to make room for a huge iron in your suitcase at the expense of something else.

Most travel irons are specially designed to ensure maximum portability, but it’s still something to consider.

Now that we’ve discussed exactly what to look for in a travel iron let’s take a look at some of the best ones available. We’ve compiled a list of the best options that are versatile and will satisfy all of your expectations for a travel iron.

Full Review of the Top 6 Irons for Travel Available on the Market

With all the options available out there, finding the right travel iron can be a bit tricky. To help you with this process, here are brief overviews of the top options you can find out there!

1.  Rowenta DA1560 Pro Compact Steam Iron

Let’s start with one of the most reliable travel irons out there and our overall top pick. The Rowenta travel iron strikes an excellent balance between power and space efficiency, all while coming with several travel-friendly features. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for a small travel iron.

For starters, the iron features a stainless steel soleplate, which ensures excellent heat conduction through its 1,000 watts of power.

Besides dry ironing, the Rowenta is also great at steaming. It features a 2-ounce tank in addition to 200 micro steam holes. You can adjust the steaming between bursts and continuous steaming. It also has a vertical steaming option for added convenience.

The Rowenta is also a dual voltage travel iron, which you can adjust directly on the iron for a hassle-free conversion.

The iron comes with an ergonomic handle that you can fold when not in use for easier storage and packing.

Additionally, the iron comes with a travel pouch to keep it secure in one place as well as a one-year limited warranty for a worry-free purchase.

  • High wattage and adjustable temperature to work with a variety of fabrics
  • Adjustable steaming modes, including vertical steaming mode
  • Dual-voltage feature for reliability while traveling
  • A bit pricey

2.  Conair EZ Press Hand-Held Steam Iron

The Conair EZ Press Steam Iron is a mighty option to consider if you’re looking for powerful yet reasonably-priced iron.

With 800 watts of power, the handheld iron heats up pretty quickly and you can adjust the temperature to work with various fabrics. It also features a stainless steel soleplate made from stainless steel for easy gliding over garments.

The iron also has a continuous steam knob in addition to a steam burst button to flatten tough wrinkles. The only caveat here is that the water reservoir is a bit small, but can be enough for a quick session.

One of the clever features of this iron is the anti-slip heels that allow you to set it upright without tipping over.

Similar to the Rowenta, this one also comes with dual voltage options to use it comfortably anywhere.

  • Lightweight yet sturdy iron
  • Heat up quickly and reaches a decently high temperature
  • Features an 8-foot long cord for reliability
  • The water tank is a bit small

3.  Sunbeam Hot-2-Trot Travel Iron

Next up, we have an excellent travel iron to consider if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a travel iron, but still want a decent option.

Similar to the Conair EZ Press, the SunBeat Hot-2-Trot delivers up to 800 watts of power, which allows it to heat up quickly. You can also adjust the iron’s heat through a handy temperature controls dial, although not the highest on the list.

The iron is also easy to use and features a smooth non-stick soleplate for easy gliding over the garments while ironing.

The ongoing steam feature on the travel iron allows you to use it vertically or horizontally. However, its steam burst feature isn’t as powerful as others, which is one of its few drawbacks, besides being a little heavier in comparison to other handheld options.

One the plus side though, this iron has a fairly large water tank, which saves you the hassle of refills. It also comes with a one-year limited warranty for added reliability.

  • Best option for buyers on a strict budget
  • Switches voltages easily
  • Large water reservoir for long sessions
  • The water tank may leak if you overfill it

4.  DenniesCare Portable Steam Iron

If you’re all about size and portability, this one might be a good option to consider. The DenniesCare compact steam iron is one of the tiniest options on the market that doesn’t skimp on power and features.

Despite being only 1.1 lbs, the 700-watt iron can heat up in seconds and you can adjust its temperature easily through a control dial to optimize it depending on the fabric you’re working on.

The iron has a 2.7-ounce tank that allows you to use it as a steamer in less than half a minute. It also has a steam burst feature for added reliability. However, the iron will leak water if you use the steamer before it reaches the maximum temperature.

One of the few drawbacks of this highly compact option is that it comes with a relatively short power cord. This can be a little inconvenient in some situations, although this makes it a little easier to pack, so it highly depends on your personal preferences here.

  • Incredibly lightweight and a small size
  • Reliable steam function with burst feature
  • Large removable water tank for easy refills
  • The iron’s cord is quite short

5.  Sharper Image SI-755 Mini Steam Iron

Next up, we have the Sharper Image SI-755, which is an overall nice package that comes at a fair price.

One of the favorite features of this iron is its weight, as it only weighs 0.98 lbs, which makes it the lightest travel iron on the list.

The iron is also easy to use, thanks to its nonstick plate that glides easily over fabrics. It also has a steaming feature and comes with a measuring cup to fill up the water with a 1.2-ounce water tank.

The only drawback here is that this iron has only 350 watts of power, so it takes up to a minute to heat up instead of a few seconds. This makes it an affordable option if you don’t mind the wait.

  • Features various temperature and garment steamer settings to suit many fabrics
  • Compact size and ergonomic design that can stand vertically when not in use
  • Equipped with a dual voltage switch
  • Takes some time to heat up

6.  Conwang Dry/Wet Travel Steam Iron

Last but not least, if you want a highly versatile iron that also doubles as a steamer, you shouldn’t look further than the Conwang travel iron.

This one packs some serious power under the hood, as its wattage is the highest on the list, with up to 1,100 watts! This doesn’t only mean quick heat-up time, but also reliable performance.

The iron features a scratch-resistant ceramic soleplate, which provides even heat across its surface while being easy gliding over fabrics for a smooth performance.

The iron also comes with plenty of convenient features, but the most reliable one here is the steamer mode. You can rotate the iron 90 degrees to turn it into a full-blown steamer.

The only drawback here is that it lacks a dual-voltage mode, so it’s only suitable for flights across North America.

  • Turns into a vertical steamer
  • Powerful iron that heats up fully in seconds
  • Evenly distributed heat across its ceramic soleplate
  • Lacks a dual voltage mode

Things to Look for While Buying a Travel Iron

While you’re shopping for a mini travel iron, there are several features and essential aspects that you need to keep in mind. In this section, we’ll take a closer look at them.

Power

The power of iron is usually measured in watts. The higher the wattage, the faster the iron heats up and the higher the temperature it can reach, which allows you to work with a wider range of fabrics.

Ideally, you should go for a travel iron of 600 to 1,000 watts for reliable performance. On the other hand, options with lower wattage are usually lighter but can take up to 90 seconds to heat up, so you should only consider them if you don’t mind the wait.

Heat Settings

Most irons come with an adjustable heat system, which allows you to adjust the temperature depending on your needs.

For example, if you mainly work with cotton, linen, or denim, you’ll need a powerful iron with a high wattage setting.

On the other hand, if you work with delicate or synthetic fabrics like silk or polyester, you’ll need a low-temperature mode. A good iron will feature an accurate control dial to optimize the temperature accordingly.

Portability

A good travel iron must save you a lot of storage space while packing, so you should always consider the iron’s portability and compactness while buying it.

Make sure that the iron doesn’t weigh more than 1.5 lbs and fits within a small spot in your luggage.

A massive bonus here would be going for foldable options that you can store in even smaller spaces when not in use.

A dry iron can be quite effective at pressing clothes to remove wrinkles, but it might not do much against tough ones, and that’s where the steam comes in handy!

In addition to removing tough wrinkles, powerful steam also kills odor-causing bacteria, which helps in keeping your clothes fresh for longer.

Ideally, you should look for a travel iron with a continuous steam feature, which you can use horizontally or vertically as a steamer.

Bigger water tanks mean larger iron, but it also saves you the hassle of frequent refills. A good balance here would be around 1.5 to 3 ounces.

Dual Voltage

Dual voltage is another remarkable feature to consider having in your travel iron. While some countries have their electricity voltage set at 110-120V like the US, many other countries have their voltage set at 220-240V.

Using devices at the incorrect voltage can damage them irreversibly, so it’s always a good plus to have a device with dual voltage.

This means that you can flip a switch on the device to change its voltage to the corresponding country. That being said, you can ditch this feature if you only travel internally.

When handling hot irons, safety features are always a major consideration. To prevent any burns or fires, you should aim for an iron with auto shut-off and temperature control settings.

Auto shut-off turns the device off after it hasn’t been used for some time, while the temperature control setting allows you to set the optimal temperature for the type of fabric being ironed.

These features are not only convenient but also add an extra layer of security when travelling with your iron.

Value for Money

The cost of a travel iron should be considered. Generally, cheaper models tend to lack features like temperature control or dual voltage.

That being said, you don’t have to break the bank for an efficient device either; there are plenty of great value for money irons available in the market that come with all the necessary features.

Best Travel Iron: Wrapping Up

This marks the end of today’s guide that shows you everything you need to know about travel irons and what to look for in the search for the best iron for you.

As you can see, there are several great options out there. However, if you’re looking for a reliable recommendation, you should consider the  Rowenta DA1560 Pro .

While it’s a bit pricier than others, it’s incredibly powerful, features a dual-voltage switch, and has a foldable handle.

However, if you’re looking for a more affordable option that still gets the job done, the  Sunbeam Hot-2-Trot  would be an excellent pick for you.

The Best Travel Steamers to Take on the Road, Tested and Reviewed

Even the most seasoned travelers open their suitcase after landing and find themselves with a daunting task ahead: deciding if their wrinkled clothes can get by with a thorough shake out or if reinforcements are needed. Of course, most hotel rooms are equipped with irons, but the task of setting up the ironing board and fitting each article of clothing just right can feel overwhelming. Not to mention, some pieces are too delicate for harsh heat. But is it easy to travel with a clothing steamer instead?

When I set out to find the best travel steamer a few years ago, I admit, I was hesitant about such a practical item taking up precious carry-on space. But when traveling as a family of four, as I often do, an ironing board set-up can quickly become a catch-all for toys, shopping bags, or electronics and simply gets in the way. Since I began testing these steamers, it’s rare I leave home without one.

Of the 13 steamers I've tested, my favorite models have one thing in common: a metal soleplate, allowing you to touch the steamer to the clothing to smooth out tricky spots. While steamers are mostly celebrated for their ability to get the wrinkles out, they also kill 99 percent of bacteria. Important to note, most steamers come with the recommendation of distilled water to keep the sediment buildup at bay, which I did not use as most of us don’t have easy access to it when we travel.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

My top picks:

Best overall steamer, best lightweight steamer, best long-lasting steamer, best foldable steamer, best steamer for international travel.

  • Most leakproof steamer

Best two-in-one steamer

How i tested:.

Each steamer has been tested on jeans, khakis, T-shirts , button-down shirts , linens, blouses, and jackets based on the following criteria:

  • Size/packability : Does it fit into a weekender or carry-on?
  • Power/efficiency: Is it faster and easier than setting up and using the hotel iron? Or at least just as good?
  • Water capacity: How many times do you have to refill the reservoir to steam an entire outfit?
  • Leakproof: Will you be late to dinner while waiting for the wet spots to dry?
  • Durability/longevity : Is the quality going to withstand enough trips to make the steamer worth packing and purchasing?

Can I travel with a portable steamer?

Most travel steamers will fit into a carry-on and can go through TSA without any issues; just make sure any remaining liquid from the reservoir has been emptied before getting to the airport.

Is a portable steamer worth it?

If you are going to a formal event or know you’re packing clothes that are famous for wrinkling, then yes, it's worth adding to your suitcase. A new perk I’ve recently come to love about steamers is I actually pack less clothing knowing I have a way to freshen up an item I want to rewear. This makes packing a simpler capsule wardrobe all the more possible. As someone who typically only uses a carry-on, I do value my space and find the steamer to be an easy item to remove should I be running short on room. Below, the six best travel steamers to pack on your next trip.

Image may contain: Appliance, Blow Dryer, Device, and Electrical Device

I have a new favorite steamer. While the Nesugar handheld steamer used to be my most-used, the Proctor Silex 2-in-1 compact garment steamer has moved into the top spot for me. It’s only seven ounces heavier than the Nesugar model and steams continuously for almost 10 minutes without needing to refill the reservoir. Plus, it works effectively on every type of garment—even jeans with stubborn wrinkles. Often we don’t know where or how many outlets our hotel or Airbnb will have, so the 10-foot cord on this steamer is much appreciated, as it allows you to move around comfortably. Surprisingly, this is also the most affordable steamer at $20. If you are someone who will only travel with a steamer for special occasions, this one is a safe choice.

Weight: 1.63 lbs. Water tank capacity : 4 oz. What I like most: Affordable, de-wrinkles all fabrics, heats up in 45 seconds, effective brush attachment Where there's room for improvement: Reservoir can be hard to completely empty

Image may contain: Appliance, Device, Electrical Device, and Blow Dryer

I've used this steamer regularly for over a year, and very much appreciate the smart design. The Nesugar portable steamer weighs less than a pound, but produces a solid stream of steam. With a small reservoir, I was surprised the water lasted for almost 10 minutes, allowing for five items to be de-wrinkled (though it was not powerful enough for jeans). There is a button to turn the steam on, but you don’t have to hold it down, which I like. The metal soleplate allows for an ironing option, which is what I ended up using to smooth out the jeans. An adjustable head not only makes the steamer compact, but gives you the option to steam at different angles. Originally, I wondered if frequent adjusting of the head would loosen the feature, but it is still going strong after countless trips. The unit also comes with a wall mount so you always have a place to hang it at home.

Weight: 12.8 oz. What I like most: Lightweight and packable, adjustable head, comes with a wall mount Where there's room for improvement: Works best on lighter fabrics

a folding travel iron

One of the more expensive steamers I tested, the Conair is definitely the winner in terms of power and functionality—a T-shirt can be good as new in less than a minute. While the steamer can blast wrinkles from jackets, you can also lower the setting for more delicate items. The Conair turbo is the only steamer I tested that had various settings to choose from. It even has a built-in creaser, if that’s your thing. Because the steamer is more powerful, it uses more water, so refills are necessary after a few items (depending on the fabric and intensity of the wrinkles, of course). The Conair Turbo would’ve taken the top spot if it were more compact for traveling (its dimensions are 13" x 8" x 6", making it a bit bulky for carry-ons). If you find yourself using an iron a lot at home, this steamer may actually be your best bet.

Weight: 3.2 lbs. Water tank capacity : 6.6 oz. What I like most: Can de-wrinkle anything, various settings to choose from, quick heat-up Where there's room for improvement: Hard to fill with its small opening, on the larger size for travel

a folding travel iron

This is by far the most aesthetically pleasing steamer I tested and ranks number two for packability. With a 30-second warm up and automatic steam (no trigger to hold), the Seekclass was off to a good start, but it did take four minutes to steam one pair of pants and I had to utilize the metal soleplate in order to get the job done. The reservoir is tiny, so I had to refill it before I could finish the pants, too. Because the hole to refill is so small, it’s also hard to get out any remaining water when you’re ready to pack up the unit. Knowing this, it’s smart to let the steamer dry out at your earliest convenience to keep any build-up from forming.

Weight: 1.4 pounds Water tank capacity : 3.5 oz. What I like most: Its foldable handle is great for travel, metal soleplate, quick heat-up Where there's room for improvement: Leaks when on its side; has small, hard-to-fill reservoir; heavier material requires at least one refill

a folding travel iron

International travelers will be happy about the automatic dual voltage with this steamer. While the heat up is quick (about 20 seconds), the reservoir of the steamer is painfully hot—so be sure to only hold on to the handle. Unfortunately, the high temperature of the reservoir requires a pause between fill-ups, but you can get three items done with one tank. My favorite feature is the automatic steam from the get-go, which means your fingers get a rest from holding down the trigger button that comes with many other steamers. The main reason this steamer remains on the final list is for its appeal to those who frequently travel abroad.

Weight: 1.2 lbs. Water tank capacity : 3.4 oz. What I like most: Dual voltage, collapsible handle for travel, automatic heat-up (no power button), no trigger needed to release steam Where there's room for improvement: Cannot promptly refill reservoir because the tank gets so hot

Most leakproof

I tend to gravitate toward the hybrid steamers that can also be used as an iron. The large iron plate on the Steamery Cirrus 3 is almost as efficient as a full-size iron, but I could only steam three items with one tank of water. Something that stands out with this steamer is its ability to remain leak-free. This is one of the most important features for me as I tend to travel with a busy itinerary, which means I may be steaming in a hurry and the last thing I want to do is take out a hair dryer to dissolve the wet spots left behind by the steamer. I even gave it a bit of a shake test and nothing spilled. Where this steamer falls short, honestly, is the price.

Weight : 1.8 lbs. Water tank capacity : 3 oz. What I like most: Large iron plate, completely leakproof, quick heat-up Where there's room for improvement: Expensive price point, reservoir empties after three garments

Image may contain: Device, Electrical Device, Smoke Pipe, and Appliance

Rounding out our list of the best travel steamers is this hybrid steamer/iron that comes highly recommended by senior editor Megan Spurrell . “I was drawn to the Nori steamer because of its sleek design—two-in-ones are always ideal for travel, and not needing an ironing board seemed like a plus,” Spurrell says. “I put it to the test the day of my destination wedding this past month, on both my dress and my husband's linen suit. It did get the job done, and both functions (steaming and ironing) deliver.”

The unique, compact steamer features two aluminum plates that can simultaneously iron the front and back of a garment, getting the job done in half the time. Another perk: It offers six fabric settings (polyester, silk, wool, cotton, denim, and linen)—so no matter what you pack, you can rest assured it will be wrinkle-free and free of any damage when it's time to wear.

Weight : 1.4 lbs.  Water tank capacity : 1 oz.  What I like most: Double plates, dual voltage, automatic shut-off after 10 minutes of no movement Where there's room for improvement: Its tiny reservoir means it's best reserved for smaller jobs; it can be tiring to hold while smoothing out a very crinkled shirt.

Buying guide for best travel irons.

Updated May 2024

Whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, a good travel iron can keep you looking your best no matter where you are. These handy devices are small enough to pack in your suitcase, and a few even have foldable handles for even more compact packing.

From steam shots to extra-long cords, travel irons come with a number of handy features. To find the right one, you might have to take a good look at not only the types of fabrics you iron but also how many garments you iron while traveling.

If you’re not sure where to start your search, you’ve come to the right place. At BestReviews, we strive to be your go–to site for all of your purchasing decisions. We believe in making informed choices, so we’ve provided a shopping guide to help you sift through your travel iron options.

Travel iron features to consider

The soleplate is the flat, triangular part of the iron that does the hard work of smoothing out the wrinkles. It can be made of a number of different materials, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

Stainless steel: These soleplates distribute heat quickly and evenly. Stainless steel is less expensive than ceramic and is pretty durable. However, it can get scratched on buttons or zippers, which can affect the iron’s ability to smoothly glide over the fabric.

Ceramic: These soleplates have a metal base, such as stainless steel, aluminum, or titanium alloy, that is covered in ceramic. Ceramic is an excellent nonstick surface that heats evenly and smoothly glides over most fabrics. Ceramic works well on synthetic materials because it’s less likely to stick than stainless steel or aluminum. On the downside, the dyes used in natural fabrics can stain a ceramic soleplate, and on inexpensive irons the ceramic may crack or peel.

Aluminum: If quick touch-ups are your norm, you might consider a travel iron with an aluminum soleplate. Aluminum is lightweight and inexpensive compared to stainless steel or ceramic, but it tends to stick more easily than other materials.

Corded vs. cordless

Cordless travel irons usually come with a charging base, which can add bulk while traveling. These models aren’t as efficient as corded irons, nor can they sustain the high temperatures of corded models. That doesn’t mean cordless irons don’t have their place. If you’re traveling to a destination where you may not have access to electricity, a cordless travel iron will give you a limited amount of ironing time. Cordless models are also nice if you don’t want to be limited by cord length.

Heating time

The higher the wattage of the travel iron, the quicker it will heat up. If you’re often ironing at the last minute, a high-wattage model will probably work best for you. Irons with a steam feature will take longer to warm, but there are some models that can be ready to steam in as little as 24 seconds.

Variable temperature

Travel irons vary in their temperature range. If you know you’ll be ironing delicate fabrics like silk, look for an iron with temperatures around 300°F (148°C). Conversely, if you iron cotton or linen, you’ll need an iron with a high temperature of around 445°F (300°C).

Removing wrinkles from cotton, linen, and other natural fabrics usually requires steam . A large water tank enables you to iron more items before you need to refill. However, capacity isn’t as important in travel irons as the visibility of the tank. A clear tank lets you keep an eye on the amount of water that’s still in the iron.

Steam and steam shot

Travel irons with steam generally cost more, but if most of your clothes are made of natural materials, steam is a must. A steam shot feature can be even more convenient when traveling. With steam shot, you press a button to release one large burst of steam. If you’re in a hurry, steam shot can get things smoothed right before you walk out the door. A vertical steam feature allows you to steam garments while they’re still on the hanger. If you’re worried about damaging delicate fabrics, an iron with vertical steam is your best bet.

Weight and size

There is no standard size for a travel iron, and just because it says “travel” in the description doesn’t mean it’s compact and lightweight. Travel irons can weigh anywhere from 8 to 30 ounces. As you search for the right model, consider how much ironing you do while you travel and the types of clothing you’ll need to iron. Also keep in mind that smaller irons heat up more quickly, but large travel irons work better if you have a lot of clothing to iron because they have a larger capacity water tank.

Ease of use

Digital controls have become more common on travel irons in the last few years. They add to the price but also add convenience. However, travel irons aren’t very big, and sometimes the digital display can be hard to read. If you have poor eyesight, a travel iron with manual controls might be easier to use.

Extra features

  • Long cord: Cord length isn’t usually advertised on travel irons, but you can find ones with a cord over eight feet long that offers extended reach.
  • Drip prevention: Water can damage some delicate fabrics. A travel iron that prevents drips not only keep things neat and tidy but also keeps you from getting accidentally burned by dripping scalding water.
  • Auto shutoff: Most travel irons automatically shut off after a set period of time.

a folding travel iron

Travel iron prices

You can expect to pay from less than $15 to more than $35 for a travel iron.

Inexpensive: For less than $15, you can find a travel iron with manual controls, dual voltage system, steam shot, and power indicator light. Irons at this price are usually some of the smallest you’ll find on the market.

Mid-range: From $15 to $35, you’ll find slightly larger irons with a few extra features like quick heat times and longer cords. You’ll also find models with dual voltage and some that come with a measuring cup that makes it easier to fill the water tank.

Expensive: If you spend more than $35, you’ll find models with 1000 W of power and several steam options, including steam shot and vertical steam. Some have folding handles to make them more compact when traveling.

a folding travel iron

If you’re traveling outside the United States, look for a travel iron with dual voltage. Electrical appliances in the U.S. are 100 volts, but in some countries the standard is 240 volts.

A vertical steam setting allows you to remove wrinkles while the item is draped or hanging from a hanger or chair. Vertical steam works well on dresses and the most delicate of fabrics.

“UL” or “ETL” stamped on a travel iron indicates that it has passed third-party safety tests. These tests are not required, and manufacturers have to pay extra for their products to be tested.

Q. Do travel irons come with a warranty?

A. Most, but not all, travel irons come with a warranty from the manufacturer, though the length of coverage varies. Look for an iron with at least a one-year warranty, although the longer the warranty the better.

Q. Do I need an adapter for my travel iron?

A. While many models have dual voltage, most will still require an adapter because plug design varies by country.

Q. What kind of travel iron works best for delicate fabrics like silk and chiffon?

A. Delicate fabrics are sensitive to temperature, which means they’re easily melted. You want a travel iron that works well at low temperatures but also has a nonstick surface. A ceramic soleplate will glide more easily than stainless steel or aluminum over delicate fabrics. You may want to look for a travel iron with a vertical steam feature so you can remove wrinkles while your garments are hanging up.

Buying Guide for best travel steam iron

There we describe in detail some key features which an avid traveler must keep in mind before buying the best travel steam iron, A good analysis before buying is necessary because you don’t want a couple of bucks in your pocket to buy a low-quality iron which will have problems after a couple of uses.

One must keep in mind about few important things such as Wattage, Power, Water Capacity, Temperature setting range, Portability, Dual Voltage, and Extra Features.

It is one of the most important factors in an iron box, higher wattage means it consumes more energy and heats up faster, you can use it continuously with no time gaps between different clothes which will give you a better result in lesser time. Lower wattage is preferred when space is your top priority because it will consume less energy and heat up slowly to maintain the temperature which can take more time to iron.

So, be sure about how many clothes are there in your suitcase before buying an ultra-lightweight travel iron.

Water capacity not only increases the weight but higher water capacity is also preferred when you are looking forward to ironing clothes for a larger family or you have kids who are involved in activities that cause a lot of dirt on their clothes.

water tank capacity of iron

If your priority is portability and wants to take iron for traveling then lower water capacity might be a better choice. Because for travel you keep fewer clothes mostly for need and prefer less weight so if a water tank of the iron is large weight also increases. A better choice is to keep wrinkle release spray which is very helpful for removing stubborn creases. With less weight, you can get your problem solved easily.

You can check the best wrinkle release spray reviews and buy the best one for you according to your clothes material.

Temperature selector according to fabric

It is one of the most imperative features to look for because using an iron with less than 100°C will result in difficulty in moving creases and using it at higher temperatures might burn your cloth. The temperature setting range helps you to control the heat according to the fabric type, so before buying be sure about which fabrics are there in your luggage.

Prefer the iron which has versatility in temperature settings because more range will help you set heat according to fabric type. Better to choose the iron having both dry iron and steam iron option.

One of the prime factors of traveling is to be on a go with minimum baggage, Higher the weight of iron, the more difficult it will be to carry, Some companies which are known for their travel irons make them ultra-lightweight with low water capacity and lower wattage like Steam fast, Sunbeam, Oliso, and Rowenta . So, choose wisely according to your priority and luggage weight limit.

The voltage output of other countries may be different from your home country . So, choose an iron with a dual voltage feature that will help you to use it in different countries by adjusting the wattage and voltage. Like the US and Canada have 110V power supply whereas 220V is the common voltage range in other countries.

Some extra features added , like an anti-slip handle, powerful steam, and long cord are retreats that are appreciated for comfort and ease of ironing while traveling. Some good companies keep looking upon these features too. Like Rowenta, sunbeam and oliso have these features.

Finally, now you are well aware of the features to look for in a travel iron, Make sure that you choose according to your needs and priorities to save your time and energy.

Hope you liked our article about buying guide for the best travel iron, if you have any questions or suggestions then feel free to comment below, we will reply as soon as possible.

Yes, voltage is really important to look at because the voltage power of that country may be different than your home country to which you are planning to travel. So, prefer the iron which is having a dual voltage feature.

After thorough research, we found that Oliso Smart Iron TG1600 is the best travel steam iron for clothes, it has all the latest technology and features that an ultra-light travel iron should have.

Yes, you can use a travel iron if you have no, room or proper space for ironing and you have less laundry to press depending on your family size. Travel iron is small and can be stored in less space easily. You can check the steam iron choices for regular use at home.

It's the longest bridge ever built in Peru, and so far, it goes nowhere

It is the longest bridge ever built in Peru, a massive structure of cement and iron spanning the Nanay River as it connects to untouched areas of the Peruvian Amazon

So far, it goes nowhere.

The bridge is part of a federal highway project to connect Iquitos , in Peru's northeast, to the El Estrecho district on the Colombian border, in total some 188 kilometers (117 miles). It faces mounting opposition from Indigenous tribes who fear that the construction will lead to land grabbing, deforestation and drug trafficking, which have plagued similar projects across the world´s largest rainforest.

“The highway will kill us,” Everest Ochoa, a member of the Maijuna indigenous group that lives in the Peruvian Amazon, told The Associated Press. “We have to stop this project for the sake of our children, to protect the land for them."

Construction work is at a standstill as the government conducts a study of the area, but the Ministry of Transportation has already built the country’s largest bridge, which extends 2.3 kilometers (1.4 miles) over the Nanay River, a tributary of the Amazon River.

Indigenous leaders say the communities along the highway route have not been consulted

“The government didn’t ask us anything about the highway passing through our territory and we want our rights to be respected”, said community leader Artur Francis Cruz Ochoa.

His community, Nuevo Arenal, is next to the bridge and has already suffered, he said. “Drugs have already started to infiltrate our community, young people are already consuming them. With the construction of the highway, it will get worse.”

In the village of Sucusari, also near the future path of the road, people echo the same fears. It is a community of thatched houses, where the 180 inhabitants live a traditional lifestyle, fishing, hunting and growing fruit for local markets, mostly aguaje, an Amazon delicacy.

“We will lose land, animals, fish, the water will be contaminated, and the forest. If the forest is lost, we won’t have water. We won’t have life without water," said Sebastian Rios Ochoa. "With the highway, the abundance we have now will end.”

In a written message to AP , the Ministry of Transportation said the project’s objective is to connect people along the path and promote local economies, strengthen trade and help bring security to border areas.

The ministry said the construction of the bridge is considered an infrastructure project for public services and, as such, is not required to undergo prior consultation with the Indigenous tribes, according to Peru’s legislation.

The Iquitos-El Estrecho is the largest and most expensive highway construction in Peru´s Amazon, according to a recent report by Peruvian Society of Environmental Law, a nonprofit. The report says there has already been land-grabbing and deforestation in Indigenous lands.

The highway will cross two protected areas, Maijuna Kichwa and Ampiyacu Apayacu, which cover about 8,000 square kilometers (3,000 square miles) of old-growth forest, according to the report.

Zoila Ochoa Garay, 58, cries inconsolably when she speaks about her community of Nuevo Arenal, where the first stretch of the highway begins.

“Since this highway project began, people have been invading our community’s land," she said. "There is no justice here.”

Fabiano Maisonnave in Brasilandia, Brazil , contributed to this report.

We Tested Blissy's Silk Pillowcase — Here's Why We Love It

We evaluated this popular pillow cover in our Textiles Lab and in our own homes.

blissy silk pillowcase review

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

Blissy's Pillowcase Assortment

Our review of the blissy pillowcase, who it's best for, some downsides to keep in mind, more blissy products to shop, why trust good housekeeping, blissy silk pillowcase.

Silk Pillowcase

As a fiber scientist in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, I've been testing silk pillowcases for over eight years and swear by the comfort and benefits. I've been sleeping on my Blissy silk pillowcase for over three years and it has become my personal favorite. I also enlisted the help of Good Housekeeping senior textiles analyst, Emma Seymour , and home design director, Monique Valeris , who shared their experiences using this smooth cover. Here, we break down everything you need to know about the Blissy silk pillowcase, from the shopping details to what we found in our Lab and feedback from at-home evaluations.

Fabric and Construction

Blissy's pillowcase is 100% mulberry silk with a 22 momme fabric weight. Here's why these specifications matter:

  • 100% silk is important to note because sometimes cheaper "silky" or "satin" pillowcases are made of synthetics like polyester. Real silk is more luxurious and also naturally temperature-regulating, helping to keep you cooler as you sleep.
  • Mulberry silk is considered the highest quality silk because the fibers are more uniform, making the fabric smoother and more durable. Think of this as the "Egyptian cotton" version of silk.
  • Momme describes the fabric weight and lets you know how much silk is used. A momme of 19 and lower will typically be thinner, while a momme of 22 or higher feels more substantial and performs the best in our tests.

Though silk is often thought of as high maintenance, most pillowcases on the market — including Blissy's — are actually machine washable. Just make sure to air dry it, as heat can damage the fabric. Also note that the pillowcase is constructed with a zipper closure, which helps keep the pillow secure inside the cover. Because silk can feel a bit slippery, the pillow will be more prone to sliding out if there's an opening at the side.

blissy pillowcase review blissy zipper closure

One of the best aspects of shopping for a Blissy pillowcase is how much variety there is to choose from. There are Standard, Queen and King sizes, along with options for youth and toddler pillows (which are the same size as travel pillows).

Beyond the sizes, there are tons of solid colors and prints to choose from. You can pick neutrals like white and various shades of grey and tan, opt for pop colors like yellow, hot pink and purple, or choose prints including ombres, tie dye, animal prints and much more.

When it comes to pricing, Blissy's pillowcases range from $89.95 for standard and youth sizes through $109.95 for King. There are often sales so you can avoid paying full price, and though it's still pricey when it's marked down, our tests show that it's certainly worth the splurge thanks to its long-lasting performance.

All in all, Blissy has one of the best silk pillowcase assortments we've seen. You can buy a handful of solid colors on Amazon, but Blissy's own website has a wider array of sizes and colors.

We put the Blissy silk fabric through the wringer in our Lab and then used it at home for real-world feedback. In the end, Blissy's pillowcase has outperformed dozens of other silk pillowcases in our evaluations. Here's what we found in each of our tests:

  • Smoothness: This is quite possibly the most important quality of a silk pillowcase, and Blissy aced our in-Lab and at-home evaluations. Not only did it feel exceptionally smooth when it was brand new, but it retained its smoothness after we laundered it five times, which is a big feat for silk. Just note that we found it to be a tad slippery in our at-home reviews; sometimes it even slipped off the bed in the night.
  • Washability: Besides staying smooth after going through the wash, the pillowcase didn't show notable signs of wear and it hardly shrank.
  • Durability: Though it's not the strongest silk material we've tested, it was still above average in our fabric strength tests that we performed using a specialized machine called the Instron (pictured below). It also proved to be pill-resistant when we used our Martindale machine (also pictured below) to rub the fabric 1,000 times.
  • Temperature Regulation: The fabric wicked moisture well in our tests, which means it can help you feel cooler and dryer throughout the night.
  • Skin and hair benefits: Our testers had thick hair with varying textures, and they unanimously said they didn't wake up with bedhead. They also didn't notice any creases on their faces after sleeping on the Blissy pillowcase.
  • Comfort: It earned perfect comfort ratings from everyone who slept on it. Each reviewer highlighted the smooth feel as a main benefit. Valeris also called it "the perfect weight," adding that it's "not too light and not too heavy."
  • Overall satisfaction: Users unanimously said they wanted to keep sleeping on it after testing. They also loved its zipper closure, and Seymour pointed out how nicely it fit over a pillowcase for a tailored look.

The Blissy Silk Pillowcase is suitable for a wide range of preferences. For those looking for beauty benefits, the smooth cover can prevent skin and hair creases caused by tossing and turning throughout the night. For those looking for comfort, it feels luxurious to lie on and has cooling benefits that helped testers sleep more soundly.

The pillowcase also makes a great gift for just about any age. My elementary-aged daughters love sleeping on their unicorn-print Blissy pillowcases, and I've gifted the solid-color ones to friends and family members for holidays and birthdays. Each one comes beautifully packaged in a box, unlike some pillowcases that come in a plastic case.

blissy silk pillowcase review blissy packaging

While we overall love the Blissy pillowcase, there are a few things to note before you buy. First, online reviewers report issues of the zipper seam ripping off from laundering. If you're worried about the agitation from your washing machine, you can try using a mesh garment bag to keep it protected during the wash cycle.

It's also worth noting that more recently, we've noticed that Blissy has been using marketing claims that we recommend avoiding when deciding whether to buy a silk pillowcases. For instance, we've seen ads with claims like "strengthens collagen" and "prevents hair loss," which our GH Institute chemists note are FDA-regulated terms. While you shouldn't expect any too-good-to-be-true outcomes from using Blissy's silk pillowcase, we still recommend it for its quality material and excellent feedback from our testers.

Besides the pillowcase, Blissy uses the same silk fabric in other items that we've used and loved. There are options like scrunchies, sleep masks and bonnets, which you can buy individually or in packaged sets.
