Carolina punk band AFI are a testament to patience as, after forming in 1991, they didn’t receive their first major commercial break until 12 years into their career but since then they have continued to flourish.

The band formed in high school and picked the name AFI as an acronym for everything from ‘Asking for it’ to ‘Anthems for Insubordinates’. The band had something of a jumbled existence at this point as none of the members really knew how to play their instruments. The band briefly disbanded as members went off to various colleges however the positive reaction they got from a reunion show was enough to spur them into reforming.

The band slowly began building its following through releasing albums, with the mind-set of doing music for the rest of their lives, regardless of how much commercial success they encountered. During the late 90s the band began toying with its sound, adding darker and more romantic flavors. It paid off as 2000’s ‘The Art of Drowning’ became the first glimpse of the success the band were set to achieve, going on to sell over 100,000 copies, unheard of for an underground record.

With labels now jumping at the chance to be involved with the band, they signed to Dreamworks and released their first major label album ‘Sing for Sorrow’ scoring a top ten position in the album charts and receiving mass critical acclaim. Since then the band have continued to chart with every album and play shows to their dedicated fans round the world.

Live reviews

Predictable is a word that does not quite factor into AFIs vocabulary. They are a group that have been evolving sense their formation in 1991; dancing across the musical spectrum from minute long hardcore punk songs to breezy disco tunes. Though some purists (particularly those indebted to the bare bone nature of the hardcore punk scene) may express some discrepancies with the groups adoption of emo and glam sensibilities, AFI have always managed to maintain their distinctive gloom ridden sound and have consistently approached their work and live performance with a sense of sincerity. They show great respect to their audience, but by no means indulge them in feeding them formulaic gripe. Their lack of conforming to expectations and their audacity in challenging their audience by shifting their sound and appearance is what makes their music and performance so damn fascinating. Whether AFI is playing in a hip club downtown or a generic suburban Amphitheater (like the one I saw them at when opening for Greenday) it is impossible to ignore them. Singer Davey Havoc demands the audience attention leaping from one side of the stage to the next, climbing on amps and drumsets or belting out "Miss Murder" on his knees. Depending on the song it is even possible to spot them dancing under a disco ball illuminating thousands of strands of lights onto the stage. It is difficult to know what to expect when entering an AFI show other than an amazing time.

Their setlist makes great use of their catalogue comprising of newly released material, hit songs like "Girl's Not Grey" and "Silver and Cold" and more obscure selections from their West Coast punk days. Their live performance offers something for old and new fans providing a holistic view of where the band has been and where it is right now. Each performance is fresh and non-contrived and can even enamor the casual listener. Though the description intense only scratches the surface of their confrontational stage presence, off stage they are completely approachable people generously spending time with their fans signing autographs, taking pictures and engaging in conversation.

I want to start by praising the opening act - Nostalghia had a mood unlike any live show I've seen, and I was thoroughly blown away. Ciscandra's voice and stage presence were simply haunting. When AFI took the stage, their fifteen-plus years of experience performing was immediately apparent. This is a band that is passionate about their music and their fans, and they've come to put on an amazing show. I also have to praise them for giving it 110% - it'd be easy to lose confidence going from selling out stadiums to filling local venues, but they maintain an amazing attitude and throw themselves into the show just as much as they always have.

Afi is from California not Carolina lol. Anyway, Davey Havok is my god. Best poet in the world. He's the most beautiful man I've ever seen.They have changed every album & I keep on loving it all. They have so much on their plate with DreamCar, Blaqk Audio, & another band I always forget because its all constanant letters. Lol. Busy boys. Gotta love them.

One of the best shows ever. The venue, Ace of Spades is amazing. Great sound system and air flow. AFI is one of the best concert bands around and you should never miss an opportunity to see them. Some of the old classic songs weren't played which was a little disappointing but the energy from the band and crowd was awesome.

AFI did a great job of bringing a lot of energy to the show. They played a good mix with songs from at least 6 albums giving new and old fans a show they would enjoy. Havok (lead singer) got close to the fans when he crowd surfed and had the fans hold him up while he sang.

It was such a great show! Nothing but high energy from start to finish, they zoomed through that playlist. I kinda wish they had more songs to play from the setlist, but they had a great mix of songs from all the albums. I would definitely see them again.

The bands were Amazing!! Such a good mix of artists and music! You really can't go wrong when your at Red Rocks Amphitheater! Love my state and these bands!!

Always be prepared for any kind of weather when going to this venue as well!

This band never disappoints! Excellent musicianship, insane stage presence and showmanship! I highly recommend seeing them live as I have always enjoyed them even more in person. They are true rockstars!!

They played an amazing show, and they definitely gave it everything they had. I had the time of my life and loved every minute of it. 10/10, worth every penny and every hour I drove to see them.

Just as amazing as I thought they would be. Super energetic, they sounded just like their albums. My only complaint is that their set was short because they were *technically* an opener.

Misfits Announce Three 2023 Shows, Megadeth + AFI Among Opening Acts

Horror punk legends the Misfits have just announced three 2023 shows, featuring different special guests at each stop with Megadeth and AFI being among those tabbed to open.

The number of gigs now on the books equals the total amount of shows the band played across 2021 and 2022, meaning it's another rare chance for fans to catch one of punk's biggest acts of all time.

Since coming back in 2016 as the Original Misfits  (featuring original singer and songwriter Glenn Danzig and original bassist Jerry Only , as well as guitarists Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein and Acey Slade in addition to drummer Dave Lombardo ), the group has only performed 16 times, the first being at Riot Fest in Denver, Colorado.

The new dates are set for June 24 (Megadeth and Fear as support), July 8 ( The Gaslight Anthem and Fear as support) and July 15 (AFI and Fear as support) and you can view more details further down the page.

Members of the Misfits Fiend Club will have the first opportunity to grab tickets through an exclusive pre-sale that runs from March 22 at 10AM ET through March 23 at 10PM ET. The band indicates fans can use the password FIEND   to score early tickets at the corresponding ticket links to each show as listed below.

Look for the general on-sale to being on March 24 at 10AM local time at Live Nation .

MISFITS announce 2023 shows with MEGADETH, AFI, more

Since 2019, the Original Misfits have only played three shows, but this year they're making up for lost time. The horror-punk pioneers have announced several 2023 concerts that are going down throughout the U.S. later this summer, with bands like Megadeth , AFI , the Gaslight Anthem and more serving as the show openers.

Featuring founding members Glenn Danzig and Jerry Only, plus Only's brother Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein on guitar and Slayer icon Dave Lombardo on drums, this iteration of the Misfits will be performing three shows this summer — one at the MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre on June 24th with Megadeth and Fear; a July 8th gig at the Prudential Center in the band's home state of Newark, New Jersey, with Gaslight Anthem and Fear; and a July 15th show at the Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre in Phoenix with AFI and Fear.

"It's time!," Danzig enthused on social media. "You have heard the rumblings beneath the graves. Will you walk among us?"

UPDATED with lineup additions, 11:01 AM: The American Film Institute today added some films to its 2023 lineup. The five films selected by Guest Artistic Director Greta Gerwig are All That Jazz, An American in Paris, Wings of Desire A Matter of Life and Death and Pee-wee’s Big Adventure . She will introduce the latter two.

PREVIOULSY, September 28: The American Film Institute on Thursday revealed the full lineup for this year’s AFI Fest , taking place in Los Angeles from October 25-29. It joins the previously announced fest opener, Sam Esmail’s Leave the World Behind , and closer in Bradley Cooper’s Maestro . Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story is the Centerpiece film.

Additional highlights include the world premieres of Albert Brooks : Defending My Life directed by Rob Reiner and Freud’s Last Session directed by Matthew Brown . Other fest-season films in the lineup include All of Us Strangers directed by Andrew Haigh, Toronto winner American Fiction directed by Cord Jefferson, The Bikeriders directed by Jeff Nichols, The End We Start From directed by Mahalia Belo, Fingernails directed by Christos Nikou, Memory directed by Michel Franco, Quiz Lady directed by Jessica Yu, and Society of the Snow directed by J.A. Bayona which will screen in the Special Screenings section (see that full list below).

This year’s program is set to feature an expanded selection of features and shorts compared to last year, offering 141 titles for the public to enjoy across five days. The program includes 3 Red Carpet Premieres, 10 Special Screenings, 15 Luminaries, 12 Discovery, 16 World Cinema, 13 Documentary, 42 Short Film Competition, and 30 films in the AFI Conservatory Showcase presented by AMC Networks. Of the official selections, 44% are directed by women, 37% are directed by BIPOC filmmakers and 18% by LGBTQIA+ filmmakers. There are 4 World Premieres, 3 North American Premieres and 4 U.S. Premieres.

Passes are now available at Fest.AFI.com. Tickets will be available starting October 2.

AFI rolls out the red carpet for the most anticipated films of the festival. Sure to be an exciting celebration of the best in film, the section delivers world-class filmmakers and artisans, and a dose of Hollywood magic that can only be found at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre.

Leave The World Behind In this apocalyptic thriller from award-winning writer and director Sam Esmail (MR. ROBOT), Amanda (Julia Roberts) and her husband Clay (Ethan Hawke), rent a luxurious home for the weekend with their kids, Archie (Charlie Evans) and Rose (Farrah Mackenzie). Their vacation is soon upended when two strangers — G.H. (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha’la) — arrive in the night, bearing news of a mysterious cyberattack and seeking refuge in the house they claim is theirs. The latest stop on the fall festival circuit is in L.A., where the American Film Institute's annual AFI Fest will screen more than one hundred titles across five days. This year's slate features world premieres, including a documentary from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Rob Reiner, films starring Oscar-winning actors Julia Roberts and Anthony Hopkins , and a documentary on Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award winner Tyler Perry . As if that weren't enough of a draw, Greta Gerwig has programmed her very own screening series at the fest.

When and where is this year's festival?

The 37th edition of AFI Fest will take place Oct. 25 through Oct. 29 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

Which films are screening at AFI Fest?

This year's AFI Fest opens with the world premiere of writer-director Sam Esmail's dystopian drama, Leave the World Behind , adapted from the novel by Rumaan Alam and starring Oscar winners Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali and four-time Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke .

AFI Fest will also host the red carpet premieres of Bradley Cooper's Maestro , in which he stars as Leonard Bernstein, and the documentary Maxine's Baby: The Tyler Perry Story , followed by a conversation with directors Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz.

Who is this year's Guest Artistic Director?

Greta Gerwig , the three-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind Lady Bird (2017), Little Women (2019), and this year's Barbie , is this year's guest artistic director and is responsible for programming a series of classic films to screen during AFI Fest.

"Greta Gerwig is devoted to cinema, and AFI is devoted to her," said AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale. "In 2010, she served on the Shorts Jury for AFI Fest — and across the years since then, AFI has been proud to celebrate Lady Bird and Little Women , and now we are honored to welcome her home as Guest Artistic Director."

Gerwig's selections include Bob Fosse's All That Jazz (1979), Vincente Minnelli's An American in Paris (1951), Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's A Matter of Life and Death (1946), Tim Burton's Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985), and Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire (1987). Gerwig will be on hand to introduce A Matter of Life and Death and Pee-Wee's Big Adventure .

Fresh off winning Grammy and Oscar awards for her Barbie track, Billie Eilish is dropping a new album and hitting the road.

Hit Me Hard and Soft drops May 17, and the singer will embark on an international tour in October to support the new album. Eilish announced more than 70 dates in North America and Europe for the Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour, and concert tickets are now on presale at Ticketmaster .

Eilish is also taking steps to ensure that her fans can buy tickets fairly. According to Ticketmaster, all tickets are only available in mobile format and will be “restricted from transfer.”

“The artist wants to give fans, not scalpers, the best chance to buy tickets at face value,” notes Ticketmaster Eilish’s concert ticket pages. “To help achieve this, the tour will be using Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange where, if needed, you can resell your ticket to other fans at the original price paid.”
