New York’s Chinatown is a complex and diverse community. We’ll show you the hidden gems of New York City’s best diverse Asian restaurants and then the best Chinese Ice Cream Factory in the USA. New York’s Chinatown is a complex and diverse expanding Asian community. Let’s not forget that over half of Chinatown is composed of all the other Pacific Rim Nations, so you can get the finest Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian and Japanese foods here in Chinatown as well . We know the best places to eat in NYC’s “China town.” Where else can you find dumplings with soup in them instead of dumplings in the soup?

This neighborhood has been Irish, Jewish, and Italian before it was Chinatown. The overlapping experience of all these New York City immigrants is what makes us New Yorkers who we are today, and that’s what your Manhattan Walking Tour guide brings to life for you.

Whether it is barbecue pork with honey glaze or just wasabi peas, New York’s Chinatown has it all. Even choosy New York foodies love this tour of Chinatown! This isn’t just a Chinatown food tour-it’s a culinary experience coupled with amazing stories of New York’s history . So come hungry, the food is plentiful – enough for a full lunch and join us in Chinatown for an unforgettable day re-tracing New York’s family history – maybe even yours.

After your tour you will be very close to a lot of other great attractions and neighborhoods. NOHO, Little Italy, Nolita, St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral, the Tenement Museum, City Hall Park. Chinatown’s downtown location is a great place to catch your NYC subway ride. Almost all New York City trains go to the Canal Street stop in Chinatown, meaning fast and easy access to wherever you are coming from or going to.

Remember, we are a custom NYC walking Tour Company and can make your New York tour match you and your wants or needs. We also offer a guided tour of historic downtown that pairs perfectly with Chinatown at a substantial discount . It is seamless and your guide travels with you from one tour to the other. The Chinatown / HistoricDowntown Double Combo tour (opens in a new tab) lasts about 3.5 hours.

Food tasting locations can change without notice.

While we welcome children on our tours, our tours are mainly for a mature audience in that we taste a variety of cuisine and dive deeply into history and culture. Sometimes we find that children of a young age may become easily disengaged. Although we are a family-friendly tour company, please take care in knowing if your child will enjoy the experience prior to booking. We find that children 8 years old and older enjoy our Little Italy & Chinatown Food Tour.

  • Chevron down How much walking is involved?

We walk no more than ½ a mile at a moderate pace. During the three hours, there are many standing breaks, so we aren’t always walking. There are a few opportunities to sit throughout the tour.

  • Chevron down Is the tour wheelchair and baby stroller accessible?

Although we would like to try to cater to your wheelchair and stroller needs, it takes time for us to coordinate due to the geographic limitations of the area. With notice, sometimes we can accommodate your needs.

  • Chevron down Will there be restroom stops on the tour?

Yes, on our Little Italy & Chinatown Food Tour, there is a restroom at our first tasting location and at our sit-down tasting (about half way through the tour).

  • Chevron down Do you accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies?

Ahoy New York Tours & Tasting does its best to accommodate any dietary restrictions and allergies. Please alert us upon booking your tour/dining experience.

My boyfriend and I decided to take a food tour of Chinatown and Little Italy to try some new foods and learn about the culture/ history of these neighborhoods and Hannah did not disappoint! As a picky eater, this was a great way to open up a bit more while learning + sightseeing the area. Hannah provided great insight into how these neighborhood + cuisine developed, answered tour and non-tour related questions, and made this a great experience for us. You could tell Hannah truly enjoys sharing this experience and I would recommend this to tourist and locals alike!

We took 4 food tours while on our trip and this one is by far the best! Patrick was FANTASTIC and got us trying foods that we never would have stumbled upon on our own. We sampled tons of wonderful food and learned so much history about the city. We left full and will definitely do it again next visit!

A wonderful experience with great food, lots of history, and fun! Shout out to our guide Lily who absolutely made the experience. She was knowledgeable and added lots of fun to the tour!! 11/10 Would recommend and even more so if Lily is the guide!!

Around the block but worlds apart – New York’s Little Italy and Chinatown

Last Updated on April 26, 2023

You might imagine Little Italy in New York City to be an authentic Italian neighborhood filled with young Robert DeNiro types shoveling down plates of delicious fresh pasta.

If so, you’d be wrong, and so were we on our first disappointing visit to Little Italy back in 2009.

Not far from the shores where millions of Italian immigrants would have disembarked throughout history, it seemed logical that the Little Italy neighborhood of New York would be as Italian as it gets on American soil. Instead, the three block radius might represent the Italian influence of the past, but nothing feels truly authentic here.

I also remember being struck by the fact that Chinatown seemed to have completely taken over, and we never expected neon Cantonese signs anywhere near Italian restaurants. On that first NY trip four years ago, the only thing Dani and I appreciated was how distinctly American and quintessentially New York it felt to ask whether the Chinese had chased the Italians out of the neighborhood.

chinatown new york city

Whether you have been to New York ten times or are planning your first visit, Ahoy Food tours is a great place to start. Come hungry because Alana, tour guide and owner of the company, will make sure you leave completely stuffed, all while feeding you fascinating nuggets of history about the waves of immigration that have given New York, and the U.S. as a whole, the texture it has today.

NYC Chinatown food tour

Myth #1: New York’s best Italian food can be found in Little Italy

Truth: Alana didn’t really recommend any restaurant to try here at all. Instead she took us to two of the area’s longest-running shops to sample homemade Mozzarella, imported cheeses and prosciutto, a bakery to sample cannolis and we managed to fit in an excellent slice of pizza before heading to Chinatown. Dani returned to Di Palo’s a few weeks later with the discount coupon you get on the tour, and bought freshly made raviolis, sauce and more of the mouthwatering Piave cheese, which we ate at our temporary New York home .

Samples in Little Italy

Myth #2:  Chinatown pushed the Italians out of Little Italy

Truth: The Italians had long since left by the time Chinese-American set up shop in the area. Today, under 50 actual Italian immigrants reside in Little Italy, and it has been that way for way over half a century. After the first and second waves of Italian immigrants landed on US shores, they quickly moved out of the crowded tenement-style living to the then-open spaces of upstate New York and New Jersey, to return to the farm life most of them knew from the old country.

NYC Chinatown food tour

Truth: Locals have plenty to learn (and taste!) from this Little Italy and Chinatown food tour which is partially food tasting and cultural walking tour. We have had serious bad luck with tours lately, having been on several which were boring, manufactured tourism products served up like processed food on store shelves. Even with ten other people, Alana made this tour feel as though we were really walking around New York with a friend. It was personal, honest and Alana took the time to answer everyone’s questions, not just about the area but things like directions, other New York tours, public transportation and more.

The tour was the canvas upon which Alana painted an incredible picture of New York City for us.

Even superheros have a weakness, however, and on this tour we felt that the stop the Thai restaurant was out of place. The food just wasn’t good enough to justify the seemingly out of place cuisine, but we understand why the tour stops here: Coming in at the midway point, it is a sit-down stop with bottomless glasses of water and a chance to escape the sun/rain/heat/cold and use the bathroom. We would have preferred a similar stop at a dim sum restaurant, especially after learning that Chinese dim sum is traditionally served between 10 and 2, which would have been perfect timing.

A sticky, humid morning had given way to an extremely hot afternoon, but even as our NYC Chinatown food tour wound down, Alana stayed to point us all in the right direction and answer questions from everyone in the group before we splintered off back into the wilds of Manhattan for the day.

I haven't been to NY yet and I didn't know about this mixup. I also didn't know that there are less than 50 actual Italian immigrants living in Little Italy. I'll need to check it out whenever I make it to NY.

Thank you, Chanel! We had spent a lot of time in Chinatown and Little Italy before we went on the tour, but we learned so many things that we had no idea about! And we'd probably never gone into any of the amazing Italian shops had it not been for the tour. Already looking forward to going back to New York and returning to Ferrara :)

What to Expect

The Tour Starts with Cantonese Cuisine

Our first stop is a restaurant featuring cuisine from the southeastern region of Guangdong, formerly known as Canton. The Cantonese were the first Chinese people to emigrate to the United States during the California Gold Rush; to this day, most Chinese restaurants in America serve predominantly Cantonese or Cantonese-derived dishes. The restaurant we’ve chosen specializes in the traditional Cantonese appetizers known as dim sum, served with two varieties of Chinese tea.

Sweet Stop at a Chinese Bakery for Dessert Sample

The many offerings on display at the Chinese bakery we’ll visit next are a feast for the eyes, as well as the tongue. We’ll enjoy a popular dessert from the former Portuguese territory of Macau which melds Chinese and colonial traditions. Be warned, though, that you may have difficulty leaving the premises without purchasing an extra treat or two for the ride home!

Try Xi’an Cuisine

Perhaps the greatest advantage of having such a well-developed Chinatown in our city is the opportunity to experience regional Chinese cuisines that aren’t widely available in the US. The third restaurant on our tour features delicacies from the northwestern city of Xi’an, one of China’s ancient dynastic capitals. This food has a Middle Eastern influence due to Xi’an’s position at the eastern terminus of the ancient network of trade routes known as the Silk Road.

Visit Chinatown Square for Sichuan Cuisine

Next, we’ll visit Chinatown Square for a taste of the bold, exciting flavors of Sichuan cuisine. Sichuan’s famous chili peppers are found in dishes from every region of China. You’ll enjoy samples of spicy chili chicken and eggplant with garlic sauce at a restaurant founded by one of Chinatown’s best-known celebrity chefs.

Sample the Best Noodles in All of Chicago

Our fifth and final stop is for what Chicago Magazine dubbed “the best noodles in all of Chicago.” The centerpiece of the noodle soup is a large cauldron of broth placed atop a heating element at your table. You an add to your soup from a platter of thinly sliced meat or vegetables cooked to your liking. Several spices and sauces are also provided for a variety of delicious flavor combinations.

Extra Information

Many people visit Chinatown to eat or go into the shops. We believe this historic area is worth knowing more about than who makes the best dim sum, although that’s certainly something we enjoy! Our Chinatown walking tour opens your eyes to some of the lesser-known history of Chicago. You cannot fully understand the city unless you know the story of its immigrants, because Chicago is a town dependent on them for its culture.

Plus, when you go on a Chinatown food tour, you go beyond the touristy destinations. We take you to the spots that make the very best food — the restaurants Chinatown insiders know about but the general public does not. These places offer you samples that will amaze and delight your taste buds. Often, the chefs at each stop give our guests items that do not even appear on the menu. Many people go straight from our tour to booking a reservation at their favorite Chinatown spot.

We recommend this tour for anyone who wants to know more about the history of Chinese Americans, Chicago arts and culture, or immigration in The Windy City.

Wentworth Avenue is the main artery of Chicago’s Chinatown district, and home to some of the most popular shopping and dining in the area.

Cantonese cuisine comes from the southeastern region of Guangdong, formerly known as Canton. The Cantonese were some of the first Chinese to emigrate to the United States and their influence is seen in most American Chinese restaurants today.

Dim sum is a traditional Cantonese appetizer, served in small bite-sized portions in steamer baskets. When paired with tea, dim sum makes for a complete Chinese brunch.

Chinese Bubble tea (VIP add-on) , the other component of a dim sum brunch, is world-famous. China has been growing tea leaves for centuries and has a rich tradition of refined tea flavors.

Portuguese-Chinese bakery treats come from the Portuguese Macau territory of China, and combine traditional and colonial flavors.

Xi’an cuisine comes from the northwestern city of Xi’an, one of China’s ancient dynastic capitals. It is rare in the United States, a special delicacy in Chicago’s Chinatown.

Lao Sze Chuan is one of the most popular Chinese restaurants in the United States, opened by celebrity chef Tony Hu, who is lovingly regarded as the unofficial mayor of Chicago’s Chinatown.

Top-rated Noodles in Chicago (by Chicago Magazine) which are popular in dishes from every region of China.

Chinatown Square is a two-story outdoor mall in the center of Chicago’s Chinatown, packed with popular shopping and dining.

Whether you live in the city or you’re visiting from out of town, you’ll enjoy one of the best Chicago food tours of Chinatown! If you are here on vacation or business, we recommend you take our tours at the beginning of your stay. This gives you background knowledge you can draw on throughout the rest of your time here. It may also give you ideas for how you want to spend the rest of your time in Chicago.

We pride ourselves on our excellent safety record. Our well-trained guides can assist you with any concerns as you walk your way through the city, enjoying all the culinary spoils of Chinatown while also learning more than you ever thought possible about Chicago’s history. Educating yourself while you eat? It’s the perfect way to celebrate Chicago.

Book your Chicago Chinatown food tour online today or contact us for a private group tour.

Phoenix Restaurant has been a Chinatown institution since the 1990s, serving up fine Cantonese cuisine with an emphasis on seafood and dim sum.

Chiu Quon Bakery is the oldest bakery in Chicago’s Chinatown, specializing in treats from the Macau region of China with a colonial Portuguese influence.

Xi’an Cuisine serves up dishes from the northwestern Xi’an region of China, a rarity in the United States.

A Chicago original since 1998, Lao Sze Chuan has since expanded to locations all over the country, and was named “Best Chinese Restaurant in the U.S.” by both Travel & Leisure and The Daily Mail.

Yummy Yummy Noodles has been named “Best Noodles in all of Chicago” by Chicago Magazine. You’ll soon find out why.

How to spend a day in Honolulu's Chinatown

Jun 24, 2024 • 5 min read

chinatown walking food tour

Spend a day in Chinatown, Honolulu, with our guide © Theodore Trimmer / Shutterstock

One of Honolulu ’s oldest neighborhoods, Chinatown is a must-see. Endlessly strollable, discoveries abound in its narrow streets of 19th-century buildings and markets buzz with activity by day. Don’t miss top restaurants, hole-in-the-wall kitchens, dim-sum palaces and family-run stalls, and save time for the art galleries and trendy shops. Buy a lei while you're here.

Chinatown’s location is no accident. Near Honolulu’s busy trading port, enterprises selling goods to city folks and visiting seamen sprang up in the 1820s. Many of the shops were established by Chinese laborers who had completed their sugarcane plantation contracts. Some opened raucous bars catering to sailors. Though the most successful families have long since moved away, new immigrants, mostly from Southeast Asia, keep Chinatown vibrant. The neighborhood’s heritage is on explosive display every Chinese New Year (late January to mid-February) when the staccato pop of firecrackers echoes off the old brick facades. Festivities include a parade with lion dances, with red-colored decorations everywhere.

Before you go...

To make the most of your time in Honolulu's Chinatown, we recommend a little planning ahead of time. If you’re wanting to take a guided tour or looking forward to dinner or cocktails at one of the swankier establishments, be sure to make reservations in advance.

In the morning...

Get dim sum then stroll the gardens.

Get to Mei Sum , a no-nonsense corner stop that cranks out dim sum, top-notch little plates and Chinese mains, when it opens at 8am. Then head to Foster Botanical Garden where the tropical plants you’ve only ever read about can be spotted in all their glory. Among its rarest specimens are the Hawaiian loulu palm and the East African Gigasiphon macrosiphon, both thought to be extinct in the wild. Several of the towering trees are the largest of their kind in the USA .

The self-guided tour is excellent and celebrates plants and trees found across Hawaii . Oddities include the cannonball tree, the sausage tree and the double coconut palm capable of producing a 50lb nut. Follow your nose past fragrant vanilla vines and cinnamon trees in the spice and herb gardens, then pick your way among the poisonous and dye plants. Don’t miss the blooming orchids or the elegant – and appropriately named – royal palms.

Take a guided tour

Local volunteers with family ties to the community run the Hawaiʻi Heritage Center , a crowded gallery with changing exhibitions about Oʻahu’s Chinese, Japanese and other ethnic communities. It runs excellent Chinatown tours Wednesday and Friday mornings. Book ahead.

Professional architects lead Chinatown walking tours on some Saturday mornings, sponsored by AIA (American Institute of Architects). The tours deconstruct Honolulu’s most historic neighborhood and its buildings. AIA also sells superb walking guides at its downtown office.

The exterior of a white building with red signs that say "Open Market", "Maunakea Marketplace" and "Food Court"

For lunch, go to the market

After your tour of the botanic garden head to Kekaulike Market and the adjoining Maunakea Marketplace for a wander and lunch. It's about a 13-minute walk down Maunakea St from the botanic garden.

Chinatown revolves around its markets and food shops. Noodle factories, pastry shops and stalls line the narrow sidewalks, crowded with cart-pulling elders and errand-running families. In these busy warrens, you’ll see the range of O‘ahu ’s bounty from the sea and the land.

Stalls in Kekaulike Market sell whole fish, dry goods, prepared foods and Hawaii’s plethora of produce. Vendors hawk fruit and vegetables from displays on the pedestrianized street. The Maunakea Marketplace hosts popular food stalls, including the standout Maguro Brothers . Wind your way to this little stall in the back where everything sparkles, especially the fish. For lunch, sashimi comes in many forms atop rice bowls, or opt for the perfectly grilled garlic ahi or teriyaki salmon.

A street with historic low-rise buildings and taller glass and steel modern creations in the distance

In the afternoon...

Shop for leis.

Wearing lei dates back to the Polynesians , who wore garlands of everyday objects such as flowers and feathers for status, honor and beauty. The tradition of giving lei to visitors to Hawaii dates to the 19th-century ships that first brought tourists.

A few traditional lei-makers in Chinatown are still going strong. At the landmark Cindy’s Lei Shoppe , you can watch craftspeople create flower lei of orchids, plumeria, twining maile, lantern ʻilima (flowering ground cover) and ginger for all occasions (from $10). Several other lei shops clustered nearby will also pack lei for you to carry back home. Tina’s Lei Shop is another good choice. Why not succumb to the gentle caress of the flower petals on your skin while the fragrant floral scent envelops you?

Make a stop at the bookstore

Honolulu’s best bookshop, Skull-Face Books & Vinyl has outlandish decor and walls lined with posters for punk shows and surf contests. The offerings are deep in noir, grunge lifestyle, sci-fi, pop culture and history.

Have a cocktail or afternoon tea

The retro gem Tea at 1024 has a huge selection of teas and serves cutsey sandwiches, scones and cakes in the afternoon. If a cocktail is more your late-afternoon vibe, try Manifest . Its lofty space is filled with provocative decor and functions as a serene coffee shop in the afternoon and a cocktail bar come evening. Finally, for a little more class make a reservation for EP Bar . The mixologists know their way around Japanese whiskey, which they mix into incredible cocktails while spinning great tunes from the huge vinyl collection.

Enjoy a delicious dinner

Book ahead for Duc’s Bistro , a swank French-Vietnamese culinary oasis serving sophisticated fare. If Korean is more to your taste, order a bibimbap from O’Kims and sit in the garden. Finally, the crowded (think elbow to elbow) Lucky Belly crafts hot and spicy Asian-fusion bites and mains with artisanal cocktails to wash it down.

For a cheaper alternative, head to Pho To-Chau . This Vietnamese institution serves pho and is always packed, so you’ll have to queue under the battered sign hanging outside.

Head to N Hotel St for bars, clubs and nightlife

Long the center of Honolulu’s liveliest nightlife, Chinatown’s edgy bar and club scene revolves around N Hotel St. The svelte cocktail lounge NextDoor is a brick-walled performance space that’s drawn the likes of Shwayze and DJs of Diplo’s caliber. It books top local talent such as the jam band Backset. DJs spin tunes until 2am many nights; other nights, there’s burlesque, performance art and more.

Right above the low-key dive Hank’s Cafe, Dragon Upstairs is a hideaway with a sedate vibe and stylized masks on the walls. It hosts a rotating lineup of jazz, blues and folk. Try the specialty drink: the pineapple upside-down cake. Just east, Scarlet Honolulu is a great LGBTIQ+ club.

Eat Your Way Through Los Angeles With These Food Tours

N ative Angelenos have always known their city’s food scene is unparalleled, but in recent years, Southern California cuisine has been under a global spotlight in a new way. The work of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jonathan Gold , in particular, helped increase awareness of Los Angeles’s food culture, which is so notable partially because it’s an international mix of cultures, styles and flavors. Practically every kind of food in the world is represented in L.A., and odds are the execution is pretty exceptional too.

Enter: the food tour. Visitors often find it in their gastronomic interests to book one of these excursions that hits multiple spots within a certain neighborhood, so they can experience more than just one or two restaurants during a trip. Of course, these tours are also great for locals who might need a push to go explore a new area of town, or just want to learn more about the history and context of the restaurant scene here.

One of the most popular and well-known tours in town comes courtesy of Culinary Backstreets .

Though they are a global company that runs food tours all over the world, their lengthy walking tour in downtown L.A. is considered to be one of the best in the city. Along with guided tours, they also create editorial content around the chefs and restaurants in places where they’re active, which is now close to 20 cities.

“Culinary Backstreets likes to run our walking food tours in cities that are misunderstood, and for us Los Angeles presented a great opportunity to dispel some long-standing myths,” says Yigal Schleifer, the company’s editor-in-chief. “First and foremost is that L.A. is not a walkable town. Second is that the city is too sprawling to be explained and understood through one part of town. With our downtown L.A. tour, we’ve managed to put together a walking tour that also helps give a sense of how the city has grown and come to be the metropolis that it is.”

Culinary Backstreets is always a great option, but whether you’re just visiting Los Angeles and looking for the best way to get a taste, or a local who wants to zero in on some of the historical context, here’s a few more of our picks for the best food tours in town.

Culinary Backstreets

If you’ve got stamina, then Culinary Backstreets is the walking tour for you. Clocking in around five and a half hours (!), this waltz through downtown Los Angeles doubles as a history tour of the city’s expansion and will not leave you hungry. Though it’s something of a marathon, this experience proves two things: 1) You can walk in Los Angeles, and 2) it’s such an expansive food city that even five hours is barely enough to cover just one neighborhood.

For some examples of the kinds of places included, Schleifer noted two vendors he thinks are particular standouts: “My Dung is a Vietnamese grocery in Chinatown that serves some of the best banh mi in L.A. And Fugetsu-Do is a family-run mochi shop that’s been in business in Little Tokyo since 1903.” .

Melting Pot Tours

For a unique itinerary, the offerings from Melting Pot Tours are your best bet. This company includes guided experiences through the Original Farmers Market in Fairfax, a jaunt through Old Pasadena and even experiences in Long Beach and East L.A. Because they’re not as focused on the more obvious areas like West Hollywood, downtown or Venice, these treks will give you even more of a local perspective on the city.

The 8 Most Romantic Restaurants in LA

There are five basic tastes: sweet, sour, bitter, salty and umami. This tour has dubbed themselves capable of helping you find that ambiguous sixth one, which might just be the memories you make along the way. But with a three-to-four-hour tour that consistently hits up to seven different restaurants, cafes or shops, their framing isn’t really an exaggeration. Tours from Six Taste are also popular because they offer private bookings from groups of two up to 100 people, so you can hop around the city with only friends and family if you like. This company offers tours in a whole slew of different neighborhoods from Santa Monica to Hollywood to Glendale, and even includes an option specialized by cuisine type: their Delicious Dumplings guide through Monterey Park.

Sidewalk Food Tours

Mainly focused on three neighborhoods — downtown, West Hollywood and Venice Beach — a tour from Sidewalk is just as much a walking tour as it is a celebration of all things food. Originating in New York, this brand now hosts experiences in Chicago, San Francisco, Paris and New Orleans, with L.A. as their latest expansion. Their itineraries focus on off-the-beaten path spots, and include five different restaurants that encompass both savory and sweet flavors in the selected neighborhood.

Secret Food Tours

If you’re looking for a food tour that also includes a substantial drinking element, Secret Food Tours is the one for you. Another company who offers tours in many cities all over the world, SFT’s L.A. experiences focus on historical context as well as delicious local fare. With options on both sides of town — either Venice Beach or downtown — these tours include a “secret dish” selected by the guide, as well as special upgrades for those who want to add alcohol to the mix. Both of those tours offer five or six stops in about three hours, but there’s also a separate beer tour that hits 12 tastings in about the same timeframe.
