THEN AND NOW: Photos that show how glamorous flying used to be

• Airports are undoubtedly unglamorous today, but they weren't always that way.
• Back in the day, you didn't have to fly first class to get what was known as a "sleeper seat."
• Because planes were smaller in the early days of air travel, so were boarding lines.

Modern-day air travel is a far cry from what it used to be.

Lines have gotten longer, leg room has shrunk, and food has worsened . Even passengers' behavior has become increasingly questionable.

To show how glamorous air travel used to be, we rounded up photos from the 1930s to the 1980s and compared them to present-day photos.

Airports' arrival and departure terminals seemed less complicated back in the day.

Pictured above is New York's Idlewild Airport, now known as John F. Kennedy Airport.

Today, things are a little less leisurely. Lines of cars call for traffic lights.

In the '30s, when you checked into an airport, there were no computers.

This check-in counter was at London's Gatwick Airport, which is still in operation today.

By the '80s, there were both monitors and arrival and departure boards.

Now, the equipment at check-in counters is much more advanced.

Arrival and departure boards have come a long way, too.

Airports started to capitalize on the time travelers spent waiting for flights early on, as evidenced by the fact that some of the first airports offered bars.

This bar was located at Heston Aerodrome, an airfield just west of London that was in operation from 1929 to 1947.

The offerings have since expanded. Most airports now feature multiple food courts, complete with bars, chain restaurants, and stand-alone restaurants.

Some airport restaurants allow diners to order from an iPad at their table instead of from a waiter or waitress.

Because planes were smaller back in the day, so were boarding lines.

These passengers were boarding the Handley Page airliner Heracles for a flight from London's Croydon Airport to Aintree to watch the Grand National. For a time after World War I, Croydon was England's only international gateway airport.

Nowadays, airlines build in plenty of time for boarding. It's done by groups and usually takes anywhere from 30 to 40 minutes.

Behind the scenes, things were different too. Air traffic control equipment looked a lot simpler in the '50s.

As planes have evolved, so too have the systems that make them work.

Airplane cabins started off pretty sparse, with just one seat to each row on either side of the plane.

In the '60s, more seats were added, as well as communal tables. The baggage storage doesn't look all that secure, though.

A decade later, passengers could fly on the Boeing 747 jumbo jet, which was known for its spacious cabin.

It's a far cry from the packed cabins that travelers are used to today.

Leg room has become a luxury of the past.

This photo shows the interior of a giant Boeing 707 jet airliner, which could fit up to 165 economy class passengers.

Most of the time, passengers find themselves cramped between seats.

First class was quite the indulgence.

This spread was served on board a Boeing 747 jumbo jet operated by  British Overseas Airways Corporation.

Passengers experienced quality service as well as high-end refreshments and food.

Airplane meals have arguably gotten worse .

Depending on which airline you fly today, a seat in first class can still be pretty luxurious.

Dubai-based airline Emirates offers first class passengers their own suites, as shown in the photo above.

Business class can be pretty swanky too.

Passengers who fly on Emirates A380 plane get the benefit of full bar service.

This breakfast served in first class on a Delta flight doesn't look nearly as gourmet as the first class food of yesteryear, though.

It's by no means one of the saddest meals we've seen, however.

Eating and drinking on an airplane looked so much enjoyable in the early days.

The Comet was the world's first commercial jet airliner.

Meals today just don't look as appetizing.

Back in the day, you didn't have to fly first class to get what was known as a "sleeper seat."

Passengers on board the Comet 4, which flew from New York to London in less than 6.5 hours.

Now, seats that allow you to lay down are usually only available in business or first class.

This reclining seat is only available if you're flying United Airlines' Business First Class.

Imagine having room to sit down and freshen up in an airplane bathroom.

Airplanes' cockpits also looked different in the beginning.

Apparently, in the '30s, cocktails were even allowed in the cockpit.

Today, cockpits have screens and are much more streamlined — and drinking in them is a definite no.

In addition to airplane's interiors, flight attendants' uniforms have also changed throughout the years.

These two air hostesses worked on board the Comet in the '50s.

Most airlines started with a similar skirt, jacket, and hat combination. Flight attendants were pretty much all female in the early years of flying.

By the '70s, skirts had gotten shorter.

Pants came along as an option soon after.

These flight attendants are modeling new uniforms designed for Court Line Aviation.

Today, some uniforms are more traditional than others.

The flight attendant above works for Rayani Air, Malaysia's first Islamic airline. The carrier has strict dress code rules for female flight attendants who are Muslim.

This Thai Airways flight attendant is also dressed in traditional clothing.

Other airlines' uniforms are more comparable to earlier iterations, like Lufthansa's.

Flight attendants for Alitalia wear uniforms that match their carrier's colors.

In-flight entertainment wasn't always available, and it wasn't always movies and TV shows. In the '80s, it was games.

Two United Airlines employees test out computer games that were being installed into the tray tables on one of the carrier's jets. The computer was embedded directly into the tray table and offered  video backgammon, checkers, blackjack poker, and soccer.

These vintage photos show what air travel looked like between 1930s to 1950s

Through this photo collection, we take a journey through time to show you what air travel looked like from the 1930s to the 1950s.

While manned, heavier-than-air flight has been around since the early 1900s, it didn’t really take off as a common endeavor for two decades. Post-WWI, the aviation industry really started to grow and many commercial airlines began operating.

The Contract Air Mail Act of 1925 (also known as the Kelly Act) directly contributed to the growth of airlines and the Air Commerce Act of 1926 gave the government the responsibility for promoting air commerce, establishing airways, certifying aircraft, licensing pilots, and issuing and enforcing regulations.

In the early years of flight, pilots and the occasional passenger sat in open cockpits exposed to wind and weather. Even in Europe, where large transports carried passengers in comparative luxury, the ride was harsh, loud, and uncomfortable.

Airliners were not pressurized, so they flew at low altitudes and were often bounced about by wind and weather. Air sickness was common.

Airlines provided many amenities to ease passenger stress, but air travel remained a rigorous adventure well into the 1940s.

The years between World War I and World War II saw great advancements in aircraft technology. Airplanes evolved from low-powered biplanes made from wood and fabric to sleek, high-powered monoplanes made of aluminum, based primarily on the founding work of Hugo Junkers during the World War I period and its adoption by American designer William Bushnell Stout and Soviet designer Andrei Tupolev.

After World War I, experienced fighter pilots were eager to show off their skills. Many American pilots became barnstormers, flying into small towns across the country and showing off their flying abilities, as well as taking paying passengers for rides.

Eventually, the barnstormers grouped into more organized displays. Air shows sprang up around the country, with air races, acrobatic stunts, and feats of air superiority.

The air races drove engine and airframe development—the Schneider Trophy, for example, led to a series of ever faster and sleeker monoplane designs culminating in the Supermarine S.6B.

With pilots competing for cash prizes, there was an incentive to go faster. Amelia Earhart was perhaps the most famous of those on the barnstorming/air show circuit. She was also the first female pilot to achieve records such as the crossing of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Many aviation firsts occurred during this period. Long-distance flights by pioneers such as Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, Alcock and Brown, Charles Lindbergh, and Amy Johnson blazed a trail that new commercial airlines soon followed.

Many of these new routes had few facilities such as modern runways, and this era also became the age of the great flying boats such as the German Dornier Do X , American Sikorsky S-42, and British Short Empire, which could operate from any stretch of clear, calm water.

After World War II, commercial aviation grew rapidly, using mostly ex-military aircraft to transport people and cargo. This growth was accelerated by the glut of heavy and super-heavy bomber airframes like the B-29 and Lancaster that could be converted into commercial aircraft.

The DC-3 also made for easier and longer commercial flights. The first commercial jet airliner to fly was the British de Havilland Comet.

By 1952, the British state airline BOAC had introduced the Comet into scheduled service. While a technical achievement, the plane suffered a series of highly public failures, as the shape of the windows led to cracks due to metal fatigue.

The fatigue was caused by cycles of pressurization and depressurization of the cabin and eventually led to the catastrophic failure of the plane’s fuselage. By the time the problems were overcome, other jet airliner designs had already taken to the skies.

USSR’s Aeroflot became the first airline in the world to operate sustained regular jet services on 15 September 1956 with the Tupolev Tu-104. The Boeing 707 and DC-8 which established new levels of comfort, safety, and passenger expectations, ushered in the age of mass commercial air travel, dubbed the Jet Age.

In October 1947, Chuck Yeager took the rocket-powered Bell X-1 through the sound barrier. Although anecdotal evidence exists that some fighter pilots may have done so while dive-bombing ground targets during the war, this was the first controlled, level flight to exceed the speed of sound.

Further barriers of distance fell in 1948 and 1952 with the first jet crossing of the Atlantic and the first nonstop flight to Australia.

Why 2024 is the prime time to discover Kazakhstan

Direct flight routes, festivals with nomadic flair and millennia-old natural beauty are drawing travellers to the Kazakh Steppe this year. Here's how to explore the best of the country's landscapes, culture and events in 2024.

Stretching far out into the horizon, the vast grass seas of the Great Steppe roll across Central Asia in a rugged and dramatic fashion. Though occasionally roamed by the rare horse rider or lone nomad, the plains of Kazakhstan are largely unexplored by the majority of travellers. But this beautiful, remote region is increasingly showing its modern identity to the world through its cities, events and transport hubs. Thanks to a number of direct flight routes from London and 30-day visa-free access for UK visitors, it's now easier than ever to experience Kazakhstan’s distinctive culture and landscapes. Here’s how to do it.

Most visitors will enter Kazakhstan from the forest-swathed southeast, landing in Almaty . Divided by dense thickets of pine and birch, the city’s surrounding green mountain peaks conceal vast lakes and twisting horse-back trails. In Kolsai Lakes National Park, Lake Kaindy’s cerulean waters draw the most attention. Here, a landslide triggered by an earthquake formed a natural dam and submerged a spruce forest beneath the surface of the lake. It’s now surrounded by picturesque hiking trails and secluded accommodation options. For equally dramatic yet drastically different scenery, travel from Almaty to Charyn Canyon. Easily traversable, this vast red and golden gorge is cut through by a walkable or driveable (in a 4x4) trail guiding visitors to dizzying desert viewpoints.

Those keen to venture deeper into central Kazakhstan can take the train into the region of Turkistan and the historic Silk Road city of Shymkent . Life has persevered here since the fourth century, with the city playing host to Sufi sheikhs and Mongol leaders, and becoming a centre of Islamic learning under the Timurids. Hop over low-lying mud-brick walls and stroll between the turquoise-tiled domes that cap mausoleums around the city, or roam the battlement ridges of the protective outer wall. The city’s Uzbek architecture and Persian designs were conserved under Soviet rule, making it an ideal stop for those curious about the history of the Turkic Steppe and a great base for further exploration of the Turkistan Region.

When in the west, the port city of Aktau and its Caspian shores offer easy access to the otherworldly plateaus that characterise the Mangystau Region. Laced with lines of ochre rock and amber streaks, here colourful geology enshrouds labyrinthine desert trails and dramatic gorges. Sharp jutting ridges and undulating rock formations shadow clear traces of 50 million years of life existing in its canyons — palaeontologists regularly unearth new evidence of animal life in the Ustyurt Nature Reserve. From large Tyrannosaurus rex and mammoths to giant fish fossilised within the Paleozoic seas, the fauna of the region has been millennia in the making.  

All these landscapes have been navigated for centuries by the nomadic people of the steppe, whose ancient traditions you can witness today. Observe displays of horse riding or falconers flying their hunting eagles before settling down to try beshbarmak , a platter of boiled meat and innards served with a glass of fermented milk to settle the stomach. Alternatively, order qurt , a cheese made from goat’s or camel’s milk that’s stored in saddlebags and churned by the galloping motion of the nomads’ horses.

How to travel to Kazakhstan in 2024  

Why now? In September 2024, competitors from all over the Eurasian Steppe will converge in Astana for the fifth World Nomad Games . Athletes participate in events like mounted archery, falconry, goat pulling and horseback wrestling.

Where to stay? Visitors from the UK should base themselves in either Aktau or Almaty, both of which are accessible via direct flights from London Heathrow with Air Astana up to four times a week. These cosmopolitan hubs serve as gateways to the country’s best natural and cultural experiences. To catch the World Nomad Games, take a domestic flight to the country’s capital, Astana.

When to travel? Seasons are an intense affair in Kazakhstan as temperatures can range from 40C to -20C. The best time to visit is during the spring or autumn, when the climate is more moderate. In winter, head to Almaty, where ski areas are accessed via cable-car.

Reduce packing clutter

International travel documents for children

See what documents a child needs to travel to or from the U.S. alone or with a parent or relative.

Children traveling to the U.S.

All children, including infants, must have their own travel documents such as a passport or document from a Trusted Traveler Program to enter the U.S. If you travel or are going to travel with a child, consider taking the following documents:

• If the child is traveling with only one of their custodial parents, they must have a letter of consent, preferably in English and notarized, from the other parent or signed by both parents. The letter should say "I acknowledge that my son/daughter is traveling outside the country with [the name of the adult] with my permission."
• If one parent has sole custody of the child, a copy of the custody document can take the place of the other parent's letter.
• Parents who frequently cross the border by land with a minor must always carry a letter of permission from the other parent.

U.S. citizen children traveling abroad

Ports of entry in many countries have security measures to prevent international child abduction . If you are traveling alone with your child, you may be required to present documentation proving you are the parent or legal guardian. You may also need a letter of permission from the other parent for your child to travel. 

If your child travels alone, depending on the country, they may be required to present a notarized letter from both parents or their legal guardian. If a minor is traveling abroad and is not accompanied by both parents or a legal guardian, contact the embassy or consulate of the country you will be visiting and ask about entry and exit requirements for that country.
