We’re working really hard to keep you in the loop as much as possible in the fast-changing circumstances.

We want to help you wherever we can during these challenging times. If you’re struggling financially as a result of Coronavirus and are worried about the payments for your policy, or if you have a policy that you don’t think you’ll need now, such as an annual travel policy, please get in touch. We’ll discuss your options with you and work out how we can provide support.

Our call centres are very busy at the moment and we are trying to answer your questions as quickly as we can. If your query is non-urgent and you are not due to travel in the next two weeks, please don’t contact us yet, so we can prioritise people in need of urgent help or who are due to travel sooner.

In the meantime, we are regularly monitoring the situation and updating our Coronavirus single trip/backpacker and annual multi-trip FAQ pages. To find out more about the impact the outbreak is having on our travel insurance policies, please check the relevant FAQ before calling or emailing us.

We’d also like to highlight that travel insurance only protects against unforeseen circumstances getting in the way of your travel plans, so any policy you buy now will have very limited insurance coverage. While the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has advised against all but essential travel indefinitely, you will not be covered under our travel insurance policies if you decide to go ahead with your trip.

Worldwide Travel Insurance

allianz travel insurance winter sports

What is worldwide travel insurance?

From the historic temples of Japan to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, there’s so much to see and experience in the world. You can take the kids on the holiday of a lifetime to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, relax surrounded by luxury and romance on a Caribbean island or even go backpacking around East Asia. Seeing the world is a great thrill and, no matter where you visit, your eyes will be opened to new experiences and adventures. Sadly though, even on the holiday of a lifetime, problems can arise. But thankfully, our worldwide travel insurance will help cover you when things don’t go to plan.

Worldwide travel insurance is slightly different to European travel insurance because it takes into account the higher cost of medical treatment outside of Europe. The cost of treatment is particularly high in America, where residents have private medical insurance. This means that, if you suffer an injury or fall ill while on your holiday and you don’t have international travel insurance, you could find yourself tens of thousands of pounds out of pocket. But, by choosing the right travel insurance, you can be protected against these costs, so an accident doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg.

On top of this, world travel insurance can protect you if you need to cancel or curtail your trip, if your flights are delayed, or if your luggage is lost or stolen. To get the best protection, you should take out international travel insurance as soon as you can – ideally as soon as you’ve booked your holiday.

Below is some more information about our insurance products, for which Terms and Conditions apply. Please visit the policy information hub for full details.

  • Loss of money*

Frequently Asked Questions

What insurance types are available .

Our Single Trip , Annual and Backpacker policies all suit different needs. Plus, you can tailor your cover to ensure you’re protected against risks that are specific to your chosen holiday.

For example, if you’re looking to play a round of golf at a top course like Pebble Beach in America, our Golf cover can protect you and your clubs. Or, if you want to ski down the slopes in Whistler, Canada, our Winter Sports and Ski add-on can help protect you against piste closure, lost ski equipment and unused ski-pack costs.

Alternatively, if you’re getting married on the beautiful beaches of Bali, then you can also add our Wedding insurance, which will protect all your essentials like your rings and wedding clothing. Or, if you’re heading away for work, our Business insurance can protect your business equipment and any samples you’re taking.

What countries does worldwide travel insurance cover?

When you choose our world travel insurance, you can select an area of cover that meets your needs. As well as Europe-only cover, we also offer ‘Worldwide exc. USA, Canada and Caribbean,’ and ‘Worldwide inc. USA.’ This means you only pay for the cover you need.

For a full list of countries that are included in your area of cover, please consult your policy documents, or visit our policy information hub .

Are there any destinations where I won't be covered?

There are some destinations where your worldwide travel insurance won’t provide you with cover. As a result, it’s vital that you read your policy documents carefully before you travel. For example, if you take out a worldwide travel insurance policy with us and visit countries or regions where the Department of Foreign Affairs has advised against all travel, or against all but essential travel, then you will not be covered.

In addition to this, you will only be covered when you travel within your area of cover. For example, if you choose a ‘Worldwide exc. USA, Canada and Caribbean’ policy and travel to the United States, you will not be covered. Your area of cover is clearly shown on your confirmation email, so please check this if you’re unsure.

How long will I be covered for?

The length of time you’ll be covered for will depend on the type of policy you choose. Our Single Trip policy can cover you for up to 180 days at any one time, while an Annual worldwide travel insurance policy can cover you for an unlimited number of trips, up to 35 days in duration over a 12 month period. If you pay an extra premium, we are able to cover trips lasting up to 60 or 90s days under our Annual travel insurance policy.

If you choose our Backpacker travel insurance, you’ll get cover for trips lasting up to 180 days.

Am I insured to take part in sports and leisure activities whilst I'm away?

We know that you’ll want to take part in new experiences and fuel your sense of adventure while you’re away. That’s why our international travel insurance comes with cover for a lot of sports and leisure activities included as standard.

With our world travel insurance, you’re covered for fun activities such as hiking, trekking, glacier walking and windsurfing, as well as selected water sports like scuba diving, snorkelling, surfing and water skiing.

If you’re looking to try winter sports while you’re away, you’ll also need our Winter Sports and Ski add-on to make sure you’re properly protected. With this optional extra, you’re covered for activities like skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing.

To understand exactly which sports and leisure activities are covered by your worldwide travel insurance policy, and where any exclusions may apply, please take a look at your policy handbook. We may be able to provide cover for activities that aren’t listed here; to find out whether we can help insure you for a specific activity, please contact us . You may need to pay a premium to get the cover you need.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Travel Insurance for Ski Trips

When you are looking for the best travel insurance plan for your ski trip, you need to consider several factors that can affect your coverage and benefits. Here are some of the most important ones:

  • Coverage for medical emergencies and evacuation: Skiing can be a risky activity that can result in injuries or illnesses that require immediate medical attention or transportation to a hospital or clinic. You need to make sure that your travel insurance plan covers the costs of medical treatment and evacuation in case of an emergency.
  • Coverage for lost or damaged ski equipment: Ski equipment can be expensive and fragile and can get lost or damaged during your trip due to theft or mishandling by airlines or other carriers. You need to make sure that your travel insurance plan covers the costs of repairing or replacing your ski equipment in case of loss or damage.
  • Coverage for trip cancellation or interruption due to weather conditions: Weather conditions can be unpredictable and can affect your ski trip plans. You may have to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a lack of snow or a snowstorm that prevents you from reaching your destination or enjoying the slopes. You need to make sure that your travel insurance plan covers the costs of canceling or interrupting your trip due to weather conditions.
  • Coverage for emergency transportation and accommodation: If you encounter an emergency during your ski trip that requires you to change your travel arrangements or stay longer than planned at your destination, you may incur additional expenses for transportation and accommodation. You need to make sure that your travel insurance plan covers the costs of emergency transportation and accommodation in case of an emergency.
  • Coverage for winter sports activities: Skiing and other winter sports activities can be considered high-risk or adventurous activities by some travel insurance providers and may not be covered by their standard plans. You need to make sure that your travel insurance plan covers the winter sports activities that you plan to do during your ski trip.

How to Choose the Best Travel Insurance for Ski Trips?

Once you have identified the factors that are important for your ski trip, you can follow these steps to choose the best travel insurance plan for your needs:

Evaluate the specific needs and risks of your ski trip

Before you start comparing travel insurance plans, you need to assess the specific needs and risks of your ski trip, such as the duration, destination, budget, activities, and health conditions of you and your travel companions. This will help you determine the level of coverage and benefits that you need from your travel insurance plan.

Compare coverage and prices from different insurance providers

After you have determined your needs and risks, you can compare the coverage and prices of different travel insurance plans from various providers. You can use online tools or websites to compare multiple plans at once or contact the providers directly to get quotes and details. You should look for a plan that offers the best value for money and meets your needs and expectations.

Read reviews and ratings from other skiers or travel experts

Another way to choose the best travel insurance plan for your ski trip is to read reviews and ratings from other skiers or travel experts who have used the same or similar plans before. You can find reviews and ratings on online platforms or forums or ask for recommendations from friends or family who have gone on ski trips before. You should look for a plan that has positive feedback and a good reputation among skiers or travelers.

Consider additional add-ons or upgrades for comprehensive coverage

Finally, if you want to have more peace of mind and protection during your ski trip, you can consider adding additional add-ons or upgrades to your travel insurance plan to enhance your coverage and benefits. Some of the common add-ons or upgrades that you can choose from are canceled for any reason, missed connection, rental car damage, ski protection package, adventure sports bundle, and more.

By following these steps, you can find the best travel insurance plan for your ski trip to the USA in 2023 and enjoy a safe and memorable winter vacation.

Many sports and leisure activities are covered on our standard travel insurance policies at no additional premium. From 5th May 2021 we are temporarily unable to provide cover while you take part in riskier Category 2 and Category 3 sports and leisure activities like kite surfing and rugby, while we make improvements to the booking engine of our website.

However, this is just a temporary measure. In the near future we will be able to offer travel insurance to people who plan to take part in the more adventurous sports and leisure activities under our Single Trip, Annual Multi-Trip and Backpacking policies once more. Policies purchased before 5th May 2021 aren’t affected and your cover won’t change.

Travel Insurance for Sports & Leisure Activities

allianz travel insurance winter sports

What is sports travel insurance?

Holidays are a great time to try new experiences, enjoy hobbies and get the adrenaline pumping. Whether you fancy a thrill-seeking bungee jump, want to gallop across the sand dunes on camel back or just take a leisurely bike ride along a coastal path, most resorts have an activity for everyone.

That being said, each activity carries its own element of unpredictability, and sometimes danger. Here at Allianz Assistance, we want to ensure that whatever tickles your fancy, you can be confident we’ve got you covered. We offer cover for lots of activities as part of your policy but, if you’re that little bit more adventurous and want to try something even riskier, we’re proud to offer our Sports and Leisure activities add on. Our travel insurance with sports cover can help keep you protected whether you’re into tennis, trekking, scuba-diving or surfing, so you can enjoy your holiday with peace of mind.

Below is some information about our insurance products, for which Terms and Conditions apply. Please visit the policy information hub for full details.

What does sports travel insurance cover?

  • Cancelling or curtailing your trip
  • Emergency medical and associated expenses
  • Loss of passport*
  • Delayed personal possessions
  • Lost, stolen or damaged personal possessions*
  • Loss of personal money*
  • Personal accident cover
  • Missed departures
  • Delayed departures
  • Personal liability
  • Legal expenses
  • End-supplier failure**
  • *Not available with Bronze cover
  • **Only available with Gold cover
  • Terms and Conditions apply.

With our Single Trip, Annual and Backpacker policies, you’ll also receive cover for some sports and activities such as cycling, sailing and scuba-diving.

Whether you need cycling holiday insurance, trekking insurance or cover for something more extreme, our sports travel insurance is appropriate for most travellers. Find our full list of sports and activities we provide cover for.

If you’re planning any other fun activities while you’re away, then other cover options are available. Our Winter Sports and Ski   insurance is separate to our sports travel insurance and could protect you against ski-specific risks such as piste closures. Meanwhile, our Golf insurance can help protect you and your clubs if they’re lost or damaged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Regardless of whether you’re looking to try some aerial activities, head below the surface of the water or keep your feet firmly planted on dry land, our sports travel insurance covers many of the sports and leisure activities* that most holidaymakers love, including:

  • Trekking, hiking, walking or hill walking
  • Motorcycling
  • Scuba-diving
  • Snorkelling
  • Horse riding and pony trekking
  • Bungee jumping
  • Parachute jumping
  • Hot air ballooning
  • Watersports like jet-skiing, parasailing, kayaking and waterskiing

These are some of the most popular activities that people ask us about, but we also offer cover for other activities, too. Please see the full list of the sports and leisure activities our travel insurance covers .

*You’re covered for sports and leisure activities as long as you’re not taking part as a professional, racing, or taking part in a competition.

If you’re heading away and you’re planning to take part in a sport or leisure activity that you cannot see on our list, our sports travel insurance may still be able to cover you. Please phone us on 020 8603 9653 to find out.

Please be aware that there may be some activities we're unable to cover.

If you’re planning to take part in winter sports like skiing, snowboarding or tobogganing, then you won’t be covered by our sports travel insurance and you should consider the additional protection that’s provided by our Winter Sports and Ski cover.

This will then protect you against risks that are unique to this type of activity, such as avalanche closures, unused ski-pack costs if you need to cancel or cut short your trip, delayed or damaged ski equipment and piste closures.

From 5th May 2021, we will no longer be offering travel insurance policies to cover people's pre-existing medical conditions. This is only a temporary measure while we make improvements to our online booking engine. Please keep an eye on the Allianz Assistance website in the future so you are aware when we are able to offer this additional cover again.  Policies purchased before 5th May 2021 aren't affected and your cover won't change.

Terms and Conditions apply.

How to ensure you have the right cover

Does your bank or credit card company provide cover.

Many bank accounts and credit cards come with some level of travel insurance cover. While some may be comprehensive, they may not cover you for everything you have planned whilst you’re away, particularly if you have adventurous plans or unusual excursions booked.

Make sure you look into the travel insurance policy that you have before every trip, to make sure it’s suitable for you and your plans.

Purchasing a holiday using a credit card means you are often protected by Consumer Protection cover. In most cases, it allows you to get your money returned to you if your provider defaults and you cannot travel.

Are you covered by ABTA or ATOL?

If you have booked a holiday through a tour operator or travel agent, it may be worth checking if you are covered by ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) or ATOL (Air Travel Organiser’s License). This type of cover means that your package holiday is protected if, for example, the travel company providing your holiday arrangements or the travel agent themselves fail financially or close down.

Your travel agents will be able to tell you if your holiday is ABTA or ATOL protected. Alternatively, use the links provided to check your cover at home.

Compare the Best International Travel Insurance Companies

As a general rule, the most important coverage to have in a foreign country is travel medical insurance , as most US health insurance policies don't cover you while you're abroad. Without travel medical coverage, a medical emergency in a foreign country can cost you. You'll want trip cancellation and interruption coverage if your trip is particularly expensive. And if you're traveling for an extended period of time, you'll want to ensure that your policy is extendable.

Here are our picks for the best travel insurance companies for international travel.

Best overall: Allianz

Allianz Travel Insurance  offers the ultimate customizable coverage for international trips, whether you're a frequent jetsetter or an occasional traveler. You can choose from an a la carte of single or multi-trip plans, as well as add-ons, including rental car damage, cancel for any reason (CFAR) , adventure sport, and business travel coverage. And with affordable pricing compared to competitors, Allianz is a budget-friendly choice for your international travel insurance needs.

The icing on the cake is Allyz TravelSmart, Allianz's highly-rated mobile app, which has an average rating of 4.4 out of five stars on the Google Play store across over 2,600 reviews and 4.8 out of five stars from over 22,000 reviews on the Apple app store. So, you can rest easy knowing that you can access your policy and file claims anywhere in the world without a hassle.

Best for exotic trips: World Nomads

World Nomads Travel Insurance  offers coverage for over 150 specific activities, so you can focus on the adventure without worrying about gaps in your coverage.

You can select its budget-friendly standard plan, starting at $79. Or if you're an adrenaline junkie seeking more thrills, you can opt for the World Nomads' Explorer plan for $120, which includes extra sports like skydiving, scuba diving, and heli-skiing. And World Nomads offers 24/7 assistance, so you can confidently travel abroad, knowing that help is just a phone call away.

Best for trip interruption: C&F Travel Insured

C&F Travel Insured offers 100% coverage for trip cancellation, up to 150% for trip interruption, and reimbursement for up to 75% of your non-refundable travel costs with select plans. This means you don't have to worry about losing your hard-earned money on non-refundable travel costs if your trip ends prematurely.

Travel Insured also stands out for its extensive "reasons for cancellation" coverage. Unlike many insurers, the company covers hurricane warnings from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Read our C&F Travel Insured review here.

GeoBlue Travel Insurance offers policies that covers emergency medical treatments when you're abroad. While GeoBlue lacks trip cancellation coverage, that allows it to charge lower premiums than the other companies on this list.

GeoBlue plans can cover medical expenses up to $1 million with several multi-trip annual plans available. It offers coinsurance plans for trips within the U.S. and 100% coverage for international trips. It also has a network of clinics in 180 countries, streamlining the claims process. It's worth noting that coverage for pre-existing conditions comes with additional costs.

Best for family coverage: Travelex Travel Insurance

Travelex Travel Insurance offers coverage for your whole crew, perfect for when you're planning a family trip. Its family plan insures all your children 17 and under at no additional cost. Best for long trips: Seven Corners

You can choose from several plans, including the Annual Multi-Trip plan, which provides medical coverage for multiple international trips for up to 364 days. This policy also offers COVID-19 medical and evacuation coverage up to $1 million.

How to Find the Right International Travel Insurance Company

Different travelers and trips require different types of insurance coverage. So, consider these tips if you're in the market to insure your trip.

Determine your needs

Your needs for travel insurance will depend on the type of trip you're taking. You'll need to consider your destination and what you'll be doing there, either business, leisure, or adventure traveling. Policies covering adventure sports and activities will cost more. Longer, more expensive trips will also cost more.

Research the reputation of the company

When researching a company, you'll want to closely review the description of services. You'll want to see how claims are handled, any exceptions, and limitations.

You'll also want to look at the company's customer reviews on sites like Trustpilot, BBB, and Squaremouth, as this will provide insight on the quality of customer service and the claims process. You should also take note of whether companies respond to customer reviews.

Compare prices

You can get quotes through a company's website or travel insurance aggregators like InsureMyTrip and VisitorsCoverage. You'll need to be prepared to provide the following information about your trip:

  • Trip destination(s)
  • Travel dates
  • Number of travelers
  • Traveler(s) age/birthday
  • State of residence
  • Total trip cost

For companies that offer travel medical insurance, you'll also want to play around with the deductible options, as they can affect your policy premium.

Understanding International Travel Insurance Coverage Options

Travel insurance can be confusing, but we're here to simplify it for you. We'll break down the industry's jargon to help you understand what travel insurance covers to help you decide what your policy needs. Bear in mind that exclusions and limitations for your age and destination may apply.

Finding the Best Price for International Travel Insurance

Your policy cost will depend on several factors, such as the length of your trip, destination, coverage limits, and age. Typically, a comprehensive policy includes travel cancellation coverage costs between 5% and 10% of your total trip cost.

If you're planning an international trip that costs $4,500, you can expect to pay anywhere from $225 to $450 for your policy. Comparing quotes from multiple providers can help you find a budget-friendly travel insurance policy that meets your needs.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed International Travel Insurance Companies

We ranked and assigned superlatives to the best travel insurance companies based on our insurance rating methodology . It focuses on several key factors, including:

  • Policy types: We analyzed company offerings such as coverage levels, exclusions, and policy upgrades, taking note of providers that offer a range of travel-related issues beyond the standard coverages.
  • Affordability: We recognize that cheap premiums don't necessarily equate to sufficient coverage. So, we seek providers that offer competitive rates with comprehensive policies and quality customer service. We also call out any discounts or special offers available.
  • Flexibility: Travel insurance isn't one-size-fits-all. We highlight providers that offer a wide array of coverage options, including single-trip, multi-trip, and long-term policies.
  • Claims handling: The claims process should be pain-free for policyholders. We seek providers that offer a streamlined process via online claims filing and a track record of handling claims fairly and efficiently.
  • Quality customer service: Good customer service is as important as affordability and flexibility. We highlight companies that offer 24/7 assistance and have a strong record of customer service responsiveness.

We consult user feedback and reviews to determine how each company fares in each category. We also check the provider's financial rating and volume of complaints via third-party rating agencies.

International Travel Insurance FAQs

Which company has the best international travel insurance.

The best insurance policy depends on your individual situation, including your destination and budget. However, popular options include Allianz Travel Insurance, World Nomads, and Travel Guard.

Are there any limitations or exclusions international travelers should be aware of?

You should pay attention to any limitations regarding covered cancellations, pre-existing conditions, and adventure activities. For example, if you're worried you may have to cancel a trip for work reasons, ensure that you've worked at your company long enough to qualify for cancellation coverage, as that is a condition with some insurers. You should also see if your destination has any travel advisories, as that can affect your policy.

What insurance do you need for international travel?

Typically, your regular health insurance won't cover you out of the country, so you'll want to make sure your travel insurance has adequate medical emergency coverage. Depending on your travel plans, you may want to purchase add-ons, such as adventure sports coverage, if you're planning on doing anything adventurous like bungee jumping.

Should you get travel insurance for international travel?

Travel insurance is worth the price for international travel because they're generally more expensive, so you have more to lose. Additionally, your regular health insurance won't cover you in other countries, so without travel insurance, you'll end up paying out of pocket for any emergency medical care you receive out of the US.

How far in advance should international travelers purchase travel insurance?

You should purchase travel insurance as soon as possible after making payment on your trip. This makes you eligible for add-ons like coverage for pre-existing conditions and CFAR. It also mitigates the chance of any losses in the days leading up to your trip.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g298484-c179997/Moscow:Russia:Russian.Trains.And.Ticketing.html

"The earliest tickets go on sale is 45 or 60 days before the departure date depending on the train " - so "far in advance" is impossible, only two months before departure. But as a rule, the fewer unsold seats are available on the train, the more expensive they are.

Minnesota United FC

Subscriber only, toothless minnesota is passed in west standings with loss..

Minnesota United defender D.J. Taylor (27) throws in the ball.

But Loons right wing back D.J. Taylor has now given up one apiece in the last two games, and the one he allowed Wednesday to Denis Bouanga was all Los Angeles FC needed in a 2-0 voctory at BMO Stadium. Bouanga converted from the set in the first half.

“Particularly in the box, particularly against (Bouanga), you do need to be perfect in terms of how you defend,” head coach Eric Ramsay said. “It’s obviously a space that we identified prior to the game as being crucial to us really clogging up when (Bouanga) comes inside.”

Meanwhile, MNUFC (7-3-4, 25 points) was shut out for the first time in eight matches and saw its six-match unbeaten streak snapped.

With a golazo from Mateusz Bogusz serving as insurance in the 82nd minute, LAFC (8-4-3, 27 points) extended its winning run to four matches. With the three points, LAFC moved ahead of MNUFC in the Western Conference standings.

The Loons appeared to take a 1-0 lead on a corner kick in the 29th minute, but an assistant referee ruled Joseph Rosales’ out-swinging service cleared the end line before Micky Tapias headed it into the net. Tapias’ smile was erased with the decision.

“I felt that’s a big call and it must have been very marginal,” Ramsay said post-match. “In fact, I can’t remember the last time that has happened. You hope that it’s the right call and of course you’d be immensely frustrated if it isn’t.”

Later on, Rosales put more corners over the end line, to cut out those set pieces before they could reach the box. The stricken goal was one of the rare offensive bright spots for MNUFC.

Taylor was also whistled for a PK on Saturday, but Dayne St. Clair couldn’t bail out Taylor on Wednesday the way he did against Rafael Navarro in the 3-3 draw with Colorado Rapids on Saturday.

Teemu Pukki returned to the starting XI vs. LAFC, but the striker missed a close-range shot in the 62nd minute; his goalless drought extended to 570 minutes since early March.

The Loons beat LAFC in their first matchup this season, 2-0 on March 16.

US wants to deploy previously banned missiles in Asia-Pacific Moscow

Washington could approach regional powers to deploy assets which were once barred under the now-defunct INF Treaty, FM Sergey Lavrov says

The US could potentially ask nations in the Asia-Pacific Region (APR) to host its intermediate and shorter-range missiles, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned, noting that Washington has already begun the deployment process.

Speaking at an ambassador roundtable on the settlement of the Ukraine crisis on Wednesday, Lavrov suggested that the US withdrew from the Cold War-era Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) to have a free hand to "settle down in new spaces."

The landmark 1987 treaty banned Russia and the United States from possessing many types of nuclear and conventional missiles with ranges of 500km to 5,500km.

However, the US unilaterally withdrew from the treaty in 2019, alleging that Russia wasn't complying with the agreement, a charge the Kremlin denied. Following Washington's withdrawal, Moscow reciprocated, although it said it had no plans to deploy the once-banned missiles on territory bordering Western nations.

Lavrov noted that the US has already deployed the missiles in the Philippines, adding he wasn't sure if "other countries in the Asia-Pacific Region will receive requests to provide their hospitable territory for similar types of weapons."

In April, the US and the Philippines held massive military exercises in the South China Sea. As part of the exercise, Washington deployed its Mid-Range Capability missile system to the region, which can hit targets at a distance of up to 1,600km. China accused the US of "stoking military confrontation," with Russia issuing a similar condemnation.

The same month, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said that Moscow could reverse its decision not to deploy intermediate- and shorter-range missiles in response to the US stationing this kind of assets in any corner of the world. Later, he said that Russia is drawing up "preemptive" missile deployment plans to offset possible threats associated with Washington's move. He added that Moscow is keeping a particularly close eye on Europe and the APR in this regard.

In May, in a thinly veiled reference to NATO and other Western-dominated organizations, Russian President Vladimir Putin also warned that the APR is "no place for closed military and political alliances," adding that both China and Russia deem the establishment of such blocs as "harmful and counterproductive" for the security architecture of the region.
