Adventure with Greatland Adventures

  • Bev As a solo traveler I usually veer towards group tours and make my decisions based on ratings. Greatland Adventures definitely lived up to their high ratings and awesome reviews. I have booked several tours with them. From the beginning it was a pleasurable experience with Steve and Rochelle who have excellent communication with their clients and ensure you are fully accommodated for your tour. I did the northern lights tour with Mike who is an excellent guide! Very knowledgeable and he captured some excellent photos of me! I completed the glacier tour with Bill who is also very knowledgeable and ensured we had a great experience at the glacier by getting us there before others arrived and allowing us to safe explore all the accessible crevasses. I absolutely recommend this tour company they are amazing!
  • Jane I want to sincerely applaud the members of Greatland Adventures! They made me and my friend's trip to Anchorage one of the most amazing experiences ever in our lives... We were all well educated about the lights before we got there and even had a chance to have a pitstop at a gas station to use the toilet and grab a coffee. We even saw the lights that night TWICE! Thank you, Steve! The memories we made will last a lifetime and we are so happy we chose Greatland Adventures. I am telling any and everyone that plans to visit Anchorage to book through them. No question!
  • John I can't say enough about how thoroughly I enjoyed this northern lights tour -- it was truly beyond belief! Steve provides an extremely well-run and well thought-out process for folks to see the aurora, the nicest part of which is that you don't know until about 6 pm that day whether or not you'll be going. This means you don't pay unless you go! But our group got lucky! The skies cleared on Friday evening (16 Feb), and Steve and Laura drove us an hour outside of Anchorage to a supremely dark place they had already scouted out. As soon as we arrived, the green hues started firing up and the sight was beyond one's imagination.

Land Acknowledgement

Greatland Adventures is located in Dena’ina ełnena, Dena’ina homeland. Anchorage is home to the K’enaht’ana, the Indigenous people of Nuti (Knik Arm), who today are members of the Eklutna (Eydlughet) and Knik (K’enakatnu) tribes. The K’enaht’ana have lived and subsisted on the lands and waters between the Chugach and Talkeetna mountains for thousands of years, long before Anchorage was “founded” and developed by visitors from elsewhere.

We are grateful to live in this beautiful land, and we are committed to honor the history and tradition of the Indigenous people of Alaska.

Sunset City Tour

The Sunset City Tour has been exception this year. Voted the number on City and Wildlife Tour in Anchorage five years in a row. Anchorage Downtown TourGroup is proud to include the tour nightly and year-round in Anchorage. The last couple of months we have sited a large amount of City Wildlife. Lynx, Bear, Porcupine, Fox, Coyote and lots and lots of moose. What a wonderful adventure our guests have while touring the Anchorage Area. This tour leaves 4 hours prior to sunset and your never disappointed in the spectacular views and majestic wildlife. (wildlife vary during seasons)

The Lynx have been a frequent site this year. They are usually a rare siting and can be difficult to capture on camera. This summer we have had some exceptional luck.

The Salmon along Ship-Creek have been plentiful. We had a record run of King Salmon this year and our many guests have enjoyed the views only blocks from the heart of downtown Anchorage.

Beluga whale sitings in September are phenomenal.

Make sure you include the downtown Anchorage Sunset City Tour during your visit to Alaska.

Mountain beyond a serene body of water

Rated 5 Stars on TripAdvisor

Russ saved our stay in Anchorage. He welcomed us so friendly and kind when we came to the office. We had some problems with bookings and he helped us out right away! Every dollar of this tour is worth it! Russ knowledge is incredible. He is professional, experienced and attentive. Highly recommend this long, interesting and adventerous tour! Thanks Russ for such an amazing day.

Our adventure started in Anchorage, where we visited the city and its surroundings with the help of “Anchorage Downtown Tour Group”, having Russ Reno as our guide, the best tourist guide in the city. We had the chance to take a private tour and it was an amazing experience, because we could learn many things about Alaska’s recent history, the evolution of local economy, and we also visited wonderful places unrepeatable on the planet.

We were in Anchorage at our precruise hotel and had a couple hours before the bus left so we asked the concierge if they knew of anybody who could drive us around and make stops on short notice...he suggested Anchorage Downtown Tourgroup. We are talking serious last minute idea and thanks to Russ, who owns the TourGroup, it happened!!! Due to very bad knees, I couldn’t walk to the places I wanted to see so Russ drove us to all of our stops and provided a fabulous tour of Anchorage. It made our trip which started out bad at our hotel, just fantastic!

Anchorage Downtown Tour Group is a small independent tour provider located near the Hilton in downtown Anchorage. The owner provides great personal service, has lived in Alaska most of his life, knows where all the interesting places are and has a treasure trove of fascinating Alaskan stories. They also take very good care of their clients.

I was born in Anchorage Alaska at Providence hospital on 9th and L street. I have met and broken bread with Russ Reno. I have never met a more knowledgeable guide for all things Alaska. If he doesn't know the answer he'll go out of his way to find it. I am looking forward to my next trip to Anchorage and seeing/talking/touring with Russ!

We were trying to book a tour with another company and nothing was working out for the only day we had to explore. We were sent to Russ. What an amazing tour guide. So knowledgable and flexible. We had so many adventures and even though it was raining and cold, we explored every moment that was presented to us. We saw Beluga whales, glaciers, iceburgs, amazing waterfalls, Bore waves and surfers riding them, animals at the wildlife conservatory, salmon as well as a tour of Anchorage.

Reviews for our Anchorage Tours

Anchorage Scenic City Tour :

“Our guide Josh was very entertaining and full of great info! We would recommend this tour of Anchorage. Great way to start our 4 days in Anchorage.” Mary

Wildlife Tour:

“This trip was fantastic! I highly recommend it. Our guide, Robbie, was very knowledgeable and friendly. In fact, everyone we met in Alaska was friendly. The wildlife we saw were great. This was our first time to Anchorage, but we will definitely be back.” Robert

Glacier Turn Tour:

“The tour took us to four different sites - aerial tram ride up Mt. Alyeska, fresh lunch in Girdwood, an Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center tour, a Portage Glacier cruise, and scenic photo-stops along the way. It was a whole day tour. Our guide was Sarah who was just excellent in providing a detailed narrative. She answered many of our questions about Alaska lifestyle and places we visited. The tour was most enjoyable. A must for all new visitors.” Syed

Anchorage to Seward Scenic Bus Tour

I cannot praise this tour enough. Our tour guide was so incredibly knowledgeable of both Anchorage and Seward and really helped get us into that Alaskan feel. She stopped at several locations and allowed for many photo ops. The tram ride up the resort was nice. We saw a wild bear and her 3 cubs. We went in early June and there was still plenty of snow to play in at the top of the mountain. The lunch was great. Soup was good. Everything about this tour was great. If you may not go to Alaska again, take this for your transportation to the cruise port over the train. We are so glad we did!” Michael

Discover Denali Flightseeing Tour:

“This was an absolutely fabulous trip! The pilot (Ed) was wonderful and very knowledgeable. We did luck out and have a rare cloudless day and we were able to see for miles!!” Mary

Anchorage to Seward Train:

“This was a fantastic way to get to Seward from Anchorage and an amazing introduction to Alaska. The train was very comfortable and the Gold Star service with 360 view via the domed car was well worth the additional $$ for our bucket list trip. We thoroughly enjoyed this train ride and highly recommend.” Sandra

Home » Tours » City-Based Day Tours » Anchorage

Anchorage is the starting point for many Alaska vacations and tours. With a wide selection of day tours, easy to access to tour excursions and outdoor activities, the city of Anchorage is the perfect anchor for your trip to Alaska.

Located on Cook Inlet and surrounded by mountains and wilderness, the city of Anchorage in Alaska is a unique combination of wilderness and modern city life. Alaska’s largest city with its trademark slogan “ Big Wild Life ” will treat you to a variety of museums, dining options, and the shopping you might expect in any medium sized U.S. city. What you might not expect in Anchorage are the 120 miles of recreational trails, an “urban” salmon fishing river, and a diversity of cultures – all on the edge of a spectacular mountain wilderness.

What people love about anchorage tours.

WOW, Alaska! You are stunning! From the morning of Day 1 - I knew I was in good hands. You can always tell how the guide greets you and how the first morning meeting goes. I felt heard and supported - and knew I picked the right company and tour. We had a group of 10, from 4 different countries - and almost everyone's first time to Alaska. We visited in late August - so I have heard the mosquitos aren't as bad then - so that was good! Likewise, we even started to see fall colors poke out along the drive down to Seward - really beautiful. Such a different landscape coming from Florida, where I live. I chose this tour because it had a lot of inclusions with activities - but also some free time to check out town - Seward is really cute! Our guide, Joe, was really friendly, fun and knowledgeable to the area. Such great commentary along the way and all throughout for 4 days. My favorite day though was when we did the boat tour out to the glacier, and we saw a Humpback Whale Breach!! So cool to see in the wild - and not often do you get to see that. Thank you for making meals that were fresh, tasty and healthy - and using local ingredients like sea salt from the bay. Truly an enjoyable experience - the camping was fun, too! Tents that keep you dry are always a plus!
Our Tour guide, Wayne, was fantastic! He went above and beyond; to make sure we were comfortable on the bus and on the tours! He also got us as close as he could when there were animal sightings! Lane, our driver, was also an excellent driver; and he kept us safe on the narrow and winding Mountain roads! Hats off to these two!
It was a very fun and adventuresome trip. The tour guide was well organized and hard working. The only problem was one of the camp sites was pretty primitive compared with the "KOA-style" campgrounds advertised by the company.

Anchorage cemetery tour celebrates the contributions of past Black leaders

June 28, 2024 by Leigh Walden, Alaska Public Media - Anchorage

anchorage tour companies

On one of the nicest Saturdays so far this summer, about 200 people competed for space surrounding a tombstone at the Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery.

Their host for the afternoon: Cal Williams.

For over two hours, Williams led the lively group on a journey through the cemetery, recounting the lives of prominent Black Alaskans who are now buried there. It was the second annual “Soul in the Cemetery” Juneteenth event — an opportunity for the community to not only celebrate Black history in Alaska and the lives of Black leaders, but also to remember elements of change that residents continue to work toward today.

“As I visit these graves,” Williams said, “it causes me to reflect on how much more they could have given if they were still here and the great joy and wonders of what they did in the time that they were here.”

Williams is a longtime Alaska resident who personally knew many of the people highlighted on the tour. At each grave on Saturday, he introduced the individual laid to rest there to the crowd.

The group’s first stop: the tomb of Elgin Jones, who founded the multi-cultural publication, The Anchorage Gazette. And in his later years, he worked tirelessly with Kids Kitchen, a group estimated to have served over one million free meals to local children in need.

Williams then welcomed members of the crowd who knew Jones to recount the impact he had on Anchorage. Several people vied for the microphone. They remembered Jones as someone who deeply loved helping children and who worked through all sorts of logistical challenges to do his work in aiding them.

“Brother Elgin…went by the rule of: If you’re gonna do it, do it right for the children,” said Rev. Wilbert Mickens of New Hope Baptist Church.

anchorage tour companies

The tour continued to the graves of a variety of other notable Black leaders including Richard and Anna Watts, Helen and Toby Gamble, Johnnie L. Gay, Rebecca Kinney and Rev. William B. Lyons, Sr. Their impact within Alaska spanned many realms of life, from hairdressing to chairing the Anchorage branch of the NAACP to carpentry to serving as the president of the Licensed Practical Colored Nurses of Louisiana.

At the grave of Helen Gamble, Robin Cole Barden introduced some of the interwoven life stories of the late Gamble and her family.

“Helen Gamble got here by my grandfather. He drove Helen Gamble from Oakland, California,” he said. “Before it was a state, when it was a territory, it was a total different land, total different community. And they thrived here because of that. Once it became a state with federal law there were Jim Crow laws and so the African Americans in Alaska and in Anchorage had to rebuild to thrive.”

Williams said so many people don’t know that part of Alaska’s history, and that’s why this tour is so special.

“Oftentimes many people have asked: I didn’t know that there were Black people here because most of the books that we’ve seen and most of the advertisement and PR about Alaska did not include — not only Black people, but not Native people,” Williams said. “And so today we acknowledge that by our presence, we appreciate those who have called upon us to pay tribute to those who have gone before us.”

anchorage tour companies

Those honored throughout the event are just a fraction of the Black Alaskans who did work to build a robust Black presence in Alaska —  work that event organizers say is ongoing.

It’s important work, said Ted Ellis, acting chair of the 400 years of African American History Commission , a federally appointed committee established in 2019 with the goal of rediscovering the 400 years of history since Africans were first brought to English colonies in 1619. Ellis and other members of the group attended Saturday’s tour.

“It’s so critically important that we realize the legacy of those who have come before us,” he said, “that we preserve those memories and those stories, that we take that and we share that and we grow and we do better as we continue to move toward excellence.”

One of the leaders that continues this work is Williams himself. The commission recognized him during the event as one of America’s 400 African American History Keepers. Williams has lived in Alaska for decades, is a past president of the NAACP Alaska chapter and committed activist working toward Black advancement nationwide.

“It is humbling and exciting to do this work,” Williams said. “I’m so happy that Darrel Hess came up with the crazy idea of going and visiting graves in this cemetery that entombed African Americans who made significant strides in development here in Anchorage, Alaska.”

Williams and the organizers of Soul at the Cemetery say they look forward to many more events to come.

The depressing reality of quiet vacationing

Why is everyone suddenly going on trips without actually taking time off?

anchorage tour companies

Who among us has not done a little fibbing at work? A little résumé embellishment here, a fake dental appointment there. Now people are taking full-blown holidays while on the job as part of a trend that's been called " quiet vacationing ."

There's no set definition of quiet vacationing, and it can encompass a variety of behaviors — traveling to a faraway place and not saying anything while still getting your work in, or not working but keeping your mouse moving to appear as if you're online in hopes that no one will notice your drop in productivity.

On the one hand, this sounds like an awesome, novel possibility brought about by the rise of remote work. Responding to the 10th email of the day while sipping a margarita on the beach sounds a lot nicer than doing it from an office desk as a coworker nearby munches loudly on their sad salad . If work gets slow in the summer, there's no good reason to sit and stare at your computer.

On the other hand, the idea that people are under so much pressure at work that they feel they can't take true disconnect-from-everything time off or even tell their boss they're working out of town for a bit is deeply depressing. It's a stark reminder of how broken American work culture is, just in time for summer.

Related stories

"It may be a question of just psychological safety, or lack thereof, that the employee doesn't feel like they can openly have a conversation with their manager about taking real time off," said Rebecca Zucker, an executive coach and the founding partner of Next Step Partners, a leadership consultancy. "We're all big boys and girls, and it's a question of not where we're working or when we're working, in terms of the hours we're working, but are we doing what we need to get done."

The whole quiet-vacationing discourse got kicked up by a recent Harris Poll survey on out-of-office culture. It found that 28% of workers said they'd taken time off work without telling their bosses — basically, they're out of the office, but not "officially." Millennials in particular have picked up on the practice, with 37% saying they'd dipped out of work on the sly.

People feeling like they have to be sneaky about their whereabouts is not a positive sign.

It's not that these workers are unhappy with the vacation their companies offer: 83% of respondents said they were satisfied with their company's paid-time-off policy. The issue seems to be that employees don't feel like they can actually use the time off they're given. Eight in 10 workers said they didn't use the maximum amount of PTO allowed; some said they felt pressure to always be available, while others cited a heavy workload as their reason. Almost half said they got nervous about requesting time away, and three-quarters said they wished their workplace culture put more value on taking breaks. Workers reported being tricky about the whole thing, too: About a third said they moved their mouse to make it look like they were online, and about the same share said they scheduled messages outside work hours to give the impression that they were working overtime.

The problem isn't really that people are working from elsewhere, especially if it's not hurting their productivity . The greater issue is what it signifies about their relationship with work and the incentives that have been fostered at their companies . People feeling like they have to be sneaky about their whereabouts is not a positive sign, nor is feeling like the only way to disconnect is to remain half plugged in.

The people taking vacations on the sly may be at organizations that are likelier to reward overworkers, said Malissa Clark, an associate professor and the head of the Healthy Work Lab at the University of Georgia. In turn, those quiet vacations may perversely reinforce the always-on culture, even when always being on isn't necessary or leading to better business results. Clark, who also wrote the book "Never Not Working: Why the Always-On Culture Is Bad for Business — and How to Fix It," pointed to 2015 research looking at how some men at a consulting firm were able to pull back from work while pretending to still put in 80-hour weeks. Their managers couldn't tell the difference, and they were rewarded for giving off the impression that they were workaholics, whereas men who were up front about needing to downshift were penalized.

"That's why there's this pressure for people to constantly be working and feel like if they take a step back they'll be left behind, because that's a very real thing," Clark said. "Apparently, that's what a lot of organizations reward."

Pretending to work when you're not or acting like you're putting in more hours than you do is not a new phenomenon . Zucker recalled working years ago at an investment bank where men would leave their suit jackets on the backs of their chairs after hours so people would think they were still somewhere in the office. But technology does make this behavior easier. The ability to connect from anywhere is a double-edged sword: Sure, it's nice to be able to answer an email on a midday walk or work from a relative's house over the holidays, but it sucks to know your boss knows that you saw that 10 p.m. Slack message pop up on your phone.

This is a societal problem and one that is uniquely American. We're told to go, go, go, made to feel like we can never get off the treadmill for even a second, lest we fall behind or give the impression that we're not trying hard. We often don't see taking time off as necessary and well deserved but as a sign of laziness and lack of work ethic. People aren't told to work to live; they're told to live to work.

Some of the fundamentals underlying quiet vacationing are positive. We live in an era where a lot of people can work from wherever and have more flexibility to achieve a better work-life balance. The rub is the sneakiness of it all. It would be much better if we were talking about, say, "loud working from anywhere for a month," or whatever you'd want to call it. (Or we could stop coining terms for work trends, the true dream.) It should be OK to have a conversation with your manager about spending a few days in the mountains or on the beach and, as long as the WiFi is decent, fulfilling your capitalist soldier duties.

Clark said this trend may make employers even more eager to force workers back to the office. Managers don't always love the idea that they don't know where their employees are, and they have the (often false) impression that being out of sight means not working.

Working from elsewhere does not erase the need for an actual vacation. There's all sorts of research indicating that time off improves mental and physical health, reduces stress, and boosts productivity, among other benefits. Even planning a vacation makes people happier. People need to psychologically detach from work in order to relax and recover.

By always feeling like you have to stay connected, you never recover from work.

"By always feeling like you have to stay connected, you never recover from work," Clark said. "And so it's like you're constantly running a marathon, but then you never take a break, and what is it going to do? It's going to wear your body down slowly, gradually, to the point where you hit a wall. And then all of a sudden you're burnt out."

If you're quiet vacationing and your boss doesn't know, good for you, I guess. But it would probably be better if you could be honest about where you are and what you're doing. And none of this scraps the need for an actual vacation. Regardless of how up front (or not) employees are, at the end of the day, American work culture is the bad guy here. The toxicity of hustle culture is the real problem, not the person who's low-key working from a cabin in the woods or the coworker who said screw it and is taking three weeks off.

Booking.com for Business — Here Are the Numbers That the Company Hasn’t Revealed

Dennis Schaal , Skift

June 27th, 2024 at 9:53 AM EDT

Here's a look at the stealthy Booking.com for Business. Parent company Booking Holdings has larger priorities, but this unit is growing.

Dennis Schaal

When an online travel company has a fast-growing business unit, it usually doesn’t take much prodding to get officials to tout it. But that’s not the case with Booking Holdings and its nine-year old business unit, Booking.com for Business .

Booking.com for Business has an exclusive partnership with travel-management company CWT, which provides it with 24/7 customer service and fulfillment, as well as flight, car rental and hotel inventory, including loyalty rates and rewards from the big chains that are usually only available on hotel websites.

With CWT slated to be acquired by American Express Global Business Travel, we asked Booking.com what would happen to the partnership.

We also wanted to know more about the strategy and details about the unit’s growth, and how business travel might relate – or not relate – to Booking’s Genius Rewards program.

Booking.com doesn’t break out any numbers for Booking.com for Business, which has its product team located in Singapore, and declined to comment for this story. Amex GBT also wouldn’t comment.

Booking.com for Business By the Numbers

However, Skift found some numbers for Booking.com for Business through its partner, Serko , which powers the Booking.com for Business platform. Serko is a public company that trades in New Zealand and Australia.

As seen in the chart below, Booking.com for Business saw its completed room nights (net of cancellations) jump 65% to 2.5 million in fiscal 2024, which ended March 31, according to Serko’s annual report.

Booking.com for Business gets inventory from multiple sources, including direct hotel relationships, bed banks, CWT, and global distribution systems. Serko’s completed room night figures do not include room nights from global distribution systems when Booking’s customers book them on its platform. So the actual number of Booking.com for Business’ completed room nights might be higher than 2.5 million.

Booking.com for Business makes up virtually all of Serko’s activities in unmanaged business travel, which means small- to medium-size businesses without formal corporate travel policies. These types of businesses are Booking.com for Business’ target customers.

Booking.com for Business’s room nights makes up just a tiny portion of those at Booking Holdings, which had revenue in 2023 of more than $20 billion . The completed room nights that Serko cites for Booking.com for Business are fewer than 1% of Booking Holdings’ room nights.

Instead of commenting on Booking.com for Business, Booking Holdings may want to emphasize that it is focusing on its core leisure travel business, as well as expanding flights and AI-related products.

Booking.com for Business Room Nights and Active Customers

anchorage tour companies

The accompanying chart also shows that Booking.com for Business’ roster of active company clients grew 10% in fiscal year 2024, to 172,000. (Note that the number of active clients fell by 4,000 in the second half of the year compared with the first half.)

Clients include the University of Chicago, Rt Motorsports, New York Institute of Finance, softserve, and Mark Miller Subaru in South Towne, Utah, according to the Booking.com for Business website.

Serko’s revenue, primarily consisting of hotel commissions, grew 4% in fiscal year 2024, the company stated. The chart shows that Serko’s average revenue per Completed Room night was 10.09 euros ($11) in the first half of fiscal 2024 and 9.38 euros ($10.22) in the second half.

No one has disclosed Booking.com for Business revenue, or CWT’s from the partnership.

Booking.com for Business Strategy

In April, Serko announced that it had renewed a 5-year partnership with Booking.com.

“Our renewed partnership with Booking.com for a further five years, as announced on 30 April 2024, is a major milestone – providing a strong foundation for future global scale,” Serko stated. “We are executing plans with Booking.com to deliver further growth through customer acquisition and activation, and expansion of the product offering.”

Serko stated in public filings that other elements of Booking.com for Business’ growth strategy are to up the use of incentives and loyalty offerings to increase road warriors’ repeat business, and to improve the post-booking experience to retain customers.

Booking.com also plans to add features for managed travel programs, which would mean trying to attract larger corporations.

Serko announced this week that it hired David Holyoke, formerly head of commercial strategy at Airbnb, to lead its unmanaged business travel unit.

Although Booking Holdings didn’t want to comment for this story, Joshua Wood, Booking.com’s director of business travel, has given at least a couple of talks at Serko events over the past couple of years about the partnership and strategy.

Walgreens says it may close hundreds more US stores over the next 3 years

Walgreens is finalizing a plan to fix its U.S. business that could result in closing hundreds of additional stores over the next three years.

CEO Tim Wentworth told analysts Thursday morning that “changes are imminent” for about 25% of the company’s stores, which he said were underperforming. The drugstore chain currently runs more than 8,600 in the United States.

Wentworth said the company’s plan could include the closing of a “significant portion” of those roughly 2,100 underperforming stores if they don’t improve.

Company leaders said they’ve already closed 2,000 locations over the last 10 years. Overall, the company runs about 12,500 drugstores worldwide.

“We are at a point where the current pharmacy model is not sustainable and the challenges in our operating environment require we approach the market differently,” he said.

Walgreens and major competitors like CVS and Rite Aid — which is going through a bankruptcy reorganization — have been closing stores as they adjust to an array of challenges to their businesses. They include include years of tight reimbursement for their prescriptions and rising costs for running their locations.

Plus, analysts say they’ve also been hit by growing competition from Walmart, Amazon and other discount retailers over sales of goods sold outside their store pharmacies. Consumers also tend to grow more price conscious when inflation rises, and drugstores generally have higher prices than those discounters.

“Our customers have become increasingly selective and price sensitive in their purchases,” said Wentworth, who joined the company last fall and has been conducting a review of its business.

Walgreens also has been closing VillageMD primary care clinics it had been installing next to its stores in order to grow its presence as a health care provider. The company had launched an aggressive expansion of those clinics under previous CEO Rosalind Brewer. But Walgreens said in March that it was reversing course and closing around 160 of the clinics.

Primary care clinics like the ones VillageMD operate tend to lose money their first couple years as they build a patient base and improve health. Jefferies analyst Brian Tanquilut has said the new clinics were burning a lot of cash and racking up losses.

But Wentworth said Thursday those clinics were now on a “clearer path to profitability.”

The CEO also said his company is talking to pharmacy benefit managers to “ensure that we are paid fairly” and working to grow other parts of its business like specialty pharmacy. That helps people with complex or chronic medical conditions.

Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. also reported that it missed earnings expectations and cut its annual forecast.

The company earned $344 million in its fiscal third quarter, with adjusted results totaling 63 cents per share. Revenue rose nearly 3% to $36.35 billion.

Analysts were looking for earnings of 68 cents per share on $35.9 billion in revenue, according to FactSet.

Walgreens now expects adjusted earnings to range from $2.80 to $2.95 for its fiscal year, which ends in August. That’s down from a forecast of $3.20 to $3.35 per share that it had narrowed in March.

Analysts expect $3.20 per share.

That guidance cut was not “overly shocking to us as the company now begins the next leg of its turnaround,” Leerink Partners analyst Michael Cherny said in a research note.

But the overall results surprised investors. Shares of the Deerfield, Illinois, company plunged 24% to $11.89 Thursday morning while the S&P 500 index rose slightly. Walgreens shares have already shed more than half their value so far this year.
